KATERINA MAKRIYIANNI was born in Crete into an artisanal family who combined their passion for their homeland and unique jewellery making in their boutique, Technima. By her parent’s influence, Katerina developed a love for jewellery and started designing at an early age. The brand’s colourful aesthetic has become Katerina Makriyianni’s trademark and her iconic hand fan earrings have set a trend worldwide.

Rock and Roll Jewellery Beazie began her career as a jewellery designer in London's Hatton Garden, which has been the focus of Britain’s gem trade since the Middle Ages. From there her interest in precious stones led her to Bangkok, the global centre of the gem trade. During this time Beazie inhabited the world of exclusive gem traders who are the first to see the most exquisite gems after they’ve left the countries where they were taken out of the earth.

Unusual gems, particularly bright and rare coloured tourmalines, inspire Beazie's art jewellery. She offers her unparalleled access to the finest selection of the world's precious stones and not the flawlessness of perfect 'clean' stones, but a quality she calls ‘character’. What are known as flaws or inclusions - a window, a mark or fleck of copper – can, in the right manifestation, give a stone a distinctive beauty and intensity of colour. The gems that Beazie acquires are not only rare, but unique and each one, she explains, has made its own epic journey before it lies cut and polished on the dealer's tray.

MilliOnAir

Not surprisingly, Beazie's jewellery tends to attract clients of character. Even her use of metals breaks away from convention. Beazie often prefers to use lower carat rose and yellow gold combined with platinum to give a pale and elegant hue with excellent durability. Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson, Alexa Chung and Elle McPherson have her designs and her pieces. Alongside her fine jewellery, Beazie has a range of offbeat, wearable brass and silver pieces, plated in all manner of finishes from 14k gold to jet black, rainbow enamels and neons. Beazie has had her primary workshop in London's Mayfair for 17 years and also works with a Japanese goldsmith who has been sculpting precious metals for over 40 years in Bangkok. www.beazie.com MilliOnAir

MilliOnAir | Fashion Update

London Fashion Week The Round Up By Fashion Contributor Ross Pollard

Apu Jan Regular readers may have seen last months indepth interview with Apu Jan and so it was I found myself sitting at his latest show, Apu Jan – Game Of Detectives, just as it was released, . While some of the stunning formal looks remained, Apu has gradually introduced more casual, but still beautiful, outfits into his collections. This time his love of detective novels was conjured forth into one of his best collections yet. And as for the train print that popped up through the collection, I didn’t just love it, I want it, the longer coats were as majestic as they were fun.

MilliOnAir

Jolin Wu A futuristic display of striking looks rolled forth during the Jolin Wu show. Using a mix of colour, layering and cutting garments off bias and off the traditional silhouette we were treated to a look into the years ahead that had notes of the classical forms of tailoring. This was a collection that wasn’t afraid to embrace the modernist movement we’re seeing re-emerge in Europe, but with the flavours of Asian streetwear, it's as clever as it is striking.

Junne in the forests and seas and whipped them up into a collection that felt like someone had turned up the dial on autumnal palettes. There was a chicness to the cuts, sharper lines mixed with the soft and complimentary colour changes. Perfect for those days and nights that fall between casual and couture.

MilliOnAir

67

Jamie Wei Hung This was legendary layering and brilliant blues, a tour de force of youthful and striking design. In Jamie Wei Huang we have that perfect pearl, a designer with a clear style who reinvents it her thoughts with a fresh approach every season. I was particularly delighted with the deconstruction and the mix of looser fit with some tighter lines. When you take on the challenge of using both form and colour there is a chance that you can end up with a collection that looks like a layer cake hit with a shovel, but this wasn’t, this was mastery of both elements woven together into a magnificent whole. Photo Credit Marc Aitkin

MilliOnAir

Malan Breton The master returns, and what a return it is every six months. Malan Breton brings us his up to date take on his love of 1920’s film noir and just keeps getting better. Fashion occupies many places, from streetwear to couture, but Malan makes art from fabric. He’s as worthy of the title as Picasso or Constable. This season alongside the brighter colours he’s known for we saw an emergence of monochrome, and a lot of plays of red and claret. You may never get to be a film star, but here is a collection that will make you feel like one.

MilliOnAir

69

Paula Knorr DISCO IS BACK, ACTIVATE YOUR DANCING PANTS, Paula Knorr is creating Studio 54 for the new generation. With a knowing nod to the era of Donna Summer, Gloria Gayner and Diana Ross we got to see a moving, flowing and often sparkling set of looks that just make you want to wave your hands in the air as I Feel Love blasts out from your record player. In a season when fun was back, this was the standard bearer for good times and great nights out.

MilliOnAir

PushButton

Roberta Einer

Structure and draping are part of the fashion lexicon, but they are the dark arts that few come to know well enough to exploit. At PushButton we saw Korean star Park Seung Gun deliver elegance and at times almost Anime themes with aplomb. Shapes were reworked to cut away from the straight lineal and crafted into three dimensional forms that had volume and overlays with drama and movement that belied the sharpness of the tailoring. More of this please.

Colour abounded with Roberta Einer, and mixed with texture it produced stunning looks. This was a very wearable collection that is perfect for the modern woman. Her understanding of textiles and traditional tailoring were used to full effect in creating a series of looks that were part of the full wardrobe concept. I also loved the almost lime green dotted through the collection, cleverly used either as a full block colour or as a push back against the deeper tone of the checks.

MilliOnAir

71

Steve O Smith Steve O Smith, you wonderful wonderful man. This tongue in cheek nod to the 1920’s was pure joy and fun. It was delightfully playful, but backed up by some serious design skill. Taking historic fashion elements and playing with them can be a risk, you can end up in costume and pastiche, but here we saw perfect execution. Take away the styling and you still have a very wearable collection with a truck load of personality, and as I often say, fashion without personality is just fabric. But if these looks could have a reality show, I’d watch it.

MilliOnAir

Zandra Rhodes I always like to fit in a one line review of a collection somewhere in a round up, and so here it is . . . There is a reason Zandra Rhodes is an iconic designer, she keeps making iconic looks, drink this in like a thirsty man just back from a week in the Sahara with a bottomless drink at a coke fountain.

Emma Willis Bespoke Shirt “We have our own range of designs or will make any shirt you want,” says bespoke shirt maker, Emma Willis, whose clients include actor Rhys Ifans BBC newsman Jeremy Bowen and comedian Steven Merchant. “ In fact, the more unusual the better, as we love a challenge. Just as long as you bring in some kind of reference for us to copy- like a picture, a good drawing or even better, an old shirt for us to replicate.”

And that’s the beauty of bespoke shirts, bespoke suits, bespoke shoes, bespoke, bespoke holidays ….. bespoke anything! The items are created to suit your every anomaly whether in terms of style or size or shape. “Every shirt I’ve owned didn’t fit,’‘ explains the 6 ‘ 7” Merchant. “So I did a bit of research and found Emma Willis. I remember thinking, ‘she is the only female shirt maker on Jermyn Street –the all male bastion of English elegance - so she has to be good.’ To begin Willis made the comedian writer three shirts black, white and blue and so enamored was he that he rotated them constantly. “But recently, because people are strangely interested in what I wear,” he continues appearing rather baffled.“ I’ve got a few more and I love them. A shirt that fits is an exciting new development for me and I get immense satisfaction in getting one made, to my exact spec, in the fabric I choose and, because I’m obsessed by value for money, I’m happy to spend a lot of money on something that I wear all the time, but, if I spend excessive amounts on an off the peg shirt that isn’t right then I am absolutely furious. I feel that the designer has deliberately conned me out of my money. But the bespoke experience could not be more different. They really want your business, treat you like a King, the clothes fit and you get a free cup of coffee. And I must say that it sounds pretty cool when you say, ‘Sorry I’m busy tomorrow I’ve an appointment with my shirt maker! ” And so, as I’d always coveted a shirt with a long pointed collar (sort of Hollywood film noir circa 1949) that betrays just a sliver of tie and whose collar points creep down past one’s collar bone. I went in with a still from a film and dared them to reproduce it. Subsequently, just a month later, I received the shirt I’d desired for over a decade made, from the most exquisite Egyptian cotton, replete with my initials emblazoned on the breast pocket. Now that’s what I call a service. Bespoke Shirts start from £190.00 Emma Willis, 66 Jermyn Street, London SW1Y www.emmawillis.com T+44(0) 20 7930 9980

Levis Vintage Range Now that everyone and their mum has their own jeans label, droves of clued up hep cats are turning back to the superlative originalthe Levi's 501 XX capital E - the most iconic garment ever produced. Never has an item of clothing inspired such adoration, commanded such high prices or been the chosen mufti for so many global arbiters of taste from Clark Gable to Marilyn Monroe to Johnny Depp. It is a totally unique product.

Yet, even with such sublime credentials in 1985 Levi’s phased out the line causing a worldwide feeding frenzy as collectors tried to amass what was left of the once disposable work item. Levi’s themselves bought one pair for $46,000 while, in the early eighties it was not uncommon to see pairs changing hands for thousands of pounds.

woodcutter to make a pair of trousers that would contain her spouse. Paid $3 in advance, Davis used rivets he’d previously used to secure leather straps to horse blankets to fasten the trouser pockets and a classic was born. Soon after, Davis approached his friendly haberdasher, Levi Strauss, and offered him half share of the business if he would cough up the $68 patent application fee- and the rest, as they say, is history.

But luckily for the aficionado, of late the line has been reissued in all it’s glory under the collective title of, Levis Vintage, that boasts all of the companies 20th century classics - each lovingly replicated to the last detail. “The classic Levi 501 XX is the staple item of any life well lived.” proclaims BBC London broadcaster and style pundit Robert Elms “All other jeans are a facsimile, a fake or at best an homage to the real originals. From cowboys to rude boys they have always been a sign of sartorial savvy.” And it seems that the stylishly informed agree: Paul Weller favours the classic 1966 slim line Levi so beloved of early Mods; Suggs of Madness shows a distinct penchant for the 1947 XX, The Strokes do a narrow ripped ‘66 a la Ramones, while Noel Gallagher claims the only labels he wears are Levis and Adidas. The unsung inventor of the Levi 501 was the immigrant Latvian tailor, Jacob Davis, who in December 1870, was commissioned by the wife of an uncommonly corpulent MilliOnAir

A runaway success, by the thirties almost every American owned a pair of jeans based on the Levi design that, although popularised by the recent wave of cowboy films and their stars John Wayne and Gary Cooper, were still perceived as work wear. The seismic shift came in the fifties when Brando sported his 1947 501’s in the controversial movie, The Wild One, James Dean wore his just every where while singer Eddie Cochrane was rarely seen in anything else, causing millions of teenagers to adopt the item as their own. Subsequetly they were the favoured jean of Steve McQueen, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, John Lennon along with Mods, skinheads, punks and rockabillies Luckily for the consumer Levis launched their Vintage range that features reissues of all the great 501 XX range including the 1937 cinch back, the 1947, as worn by Brando an The Wild One, the classic 1955 and the 1966 slim line. Each loving replicated in the very same 14 ounce indigo selvage seam denim with the same copper rivets and two tone stitching, they are the only jean the discerning individual should ever consider. “The 501 XX is the king of jeans and every other brand is just a copy,’ opines Adam Cooper of American Classics- the UK’s main purveyor of the landmark line. “ Every great 20th Century style icon has worn them: James Dean, Monroe, Jackson Pollock,Joe Strummer - you name them.

wash them, the more comfortable they become and the better they look. Just look at Armani – he has his own jeans label but still wears Levis.” Today in London, amongst your common or garden hep cat, skinny jeans are just not done while pre ripped denims (whether on male or female) will get you laughed out of town so the clued up sport the real Mc Coy that is the Levi 501 xx 1955 replica with the generous 17” bottoms and generous cut.

“I remember my first pair of Levis 501XX whereas I have long forgotten my first kiss,” declares Robert Elms. “ As a small boy I knew that what you grew up for was your first pair of 'proper' Levis. Shrinking your Levis to your skinny boy's body was a rite of passage that every kid with an eye for a bit of schmutter had to claim.”

Ylenia Mangano

by Felicities PR

Ylenia Mangano was born in 1983 in Sicily, a land of vivid colours. Ever since she was a child, Ylenia enjoyed playing with fabrics and colours, exploring all the different combinations and discovering she had an innate sense of aesthetics. From there, she turned her passion into her work and in 2011 Ylenia opened her Maison specialising in womenswear. At the age of 24, Ylenia moved to London where she completed her fashion design course at the London College of Fashion, before returning to Italy and setting up her business in Milan. Ylenia is passionate about every aspect of fashion design and continues to push herself by attending a number of proffesional courses, ranging from embriodery courses to studying fashion forms and volumes, in the workshops of the Roberto Capucci Foundation in Florence.

Tell me about your brand Ylenia Mangano‌ Ylenia Mangano is a new brand focused on creating special clothes for women. I am passionate about creating elegant garments that enhance the natural beauty and femininity present in every woman. What inspired your latest collection? My latest inspiration came from the Italian Dolce Vita and that effortless elegance. With this collection, I wanted to create elegant pieces that can be worn all day long. Women are more active now, their days are full of activities and they often leave their homes early in the morning, returning late at night. Therefore I wanted to create dresses, trousers suits and coats that can be worn from morning, to cocktail hour! I am also really inspired by colour. Each season I try to focus on key colours as I believe they can be very powerful, giving the wearer extra strength.

Tell me about your perfume? Is there more coming in the near future? I wanted to create a perfume that would fit perfectly with both my collections and customers. I was born in Sicily and I wanted to recreate the freshness of a sicilian sunset. The fragrance is based on jasmine blossom, orange blossom, cinnamon and sea breeze. I also designed the perfume bottle itself, adding a sartorial touch to each bottle with a handmade bow. I am so happy with the eau de perfume, as its been really well received by my customers. I have one customer who bought 15 bottles as they cannot live with out it! I am currently in the process of creating my next perfume‌ Does Italy play a major influence in your designs? I think that being raised in Italy has definitely influenced both my background and aesthetic. I have also travelled a lot and I love seeing what women like to wear in different countries. Many years ago I was a personal shopper and stylist in Singapore – this experience was fantastic, as I learnt about all the various cuts and fabrics that best suit/ accentuate women's curves and different body shapes.

Is there a specific region you like to source your materials from? I do a lot of research when sourcing my fabrics, as I want to give the highest quality to my customers. I personally try all the fabrics before anything goes into production, creating garments for myself and testing them to make sure they work for everyday life‌ i.e - wearing them all day long, travelling and even playing with my baby! Currently all my fabrics are from my trusted suppliers in the Como area in Italy, South of France and Portugal. Who is the Ylenia Mangano woman? The Ylenia Mangano woman is an independent one. A busy woman with an active social life, that loves to entertain friends. I don’t like to think of a specific age range for my customers, as I consider personality more important than age. I think that anyone of any age can wear my dresses, as I design pieces that enhance the feminine silhouette of a woman, making sure they feel beautiful. How important is education to you and how does that impact your creative drive? Education is really important to me. I originally studied economics at university, but I always had a very deep passion for fashion. As soon as I got my first job in finance in London and I could afford to pay for my own education, I started to do fashion courses at London School of Fashion. After this, I moved back to Italy to attend sewing courses. My aim was not to become a seamstress, as this requires many years to get to a good quality job, but instead I wanted to understand the construction of garments, understanding the various cuts and seams. This really helped my creative drive, as understanding the construction, helped me design garments that feature soft lines, that envelop the female body. What differentiates you from the other Italian couture brands within the fashion industry? I think our extensive use of colours and how we enhance femininity are the main things that differentiate Ylenia Mangano from other Italian brands. Femininity is a really key point for me. We can be just as strong as men, even if we are wearing a gorgeous dress. Courage, intelligence, strength and passion are all in our minds, they shout even louder when we are wearing a dress we love! What’s next for Ylenia Mangano? I am currently working on my next capsule collection that will be presented in September. We are also organising both breakfast and evening trunk shows in May! Our Trunk shows have been so popular previously and I love to see my customers trying on my different pieces, whilst enjoying a glass of champagne! www.yleniamangano.com

Björn Borg in collaboration with fashion industry’s most talked about designer, Charles Jeffrey Swedish sports fashion brand Björn Borg drop their new collaboration – an underwear capsule created by Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY

Charles Jeffrey releases his first underwear collaboration, a limited edition collection of men’s printed underwear, with Björn Borg. The capsule features three limited-edition prints developed from signature mark-making which the designer and illustrator describes as his ‘second language.’ The prints, entitled Scream, Squiggle and Squirm, appear as all-over prints and waistband designs across a collection LOVERBOY fans will recognise as a celebration of the label’s visual language.

MilliOnAir

In collaboration with photographer Dexter Lander, Jeffrey – an established stylist in his own right – is behind a colourful and comedic campaign celebrating the product. Of the campaign, Jeffrey comments: “It almost happened by accident, but whilst on set we started realising that what we were building was a kind of mash-up of some of the visual cues of eccentric Britishness that I love the most: Culture Club, The Mighty Boosh, a bit of David Bowie. What ties them all together is colour, a sense of performance, a dispensing with gender norms. It's a lot of things I love - remixed.” Glaswegian designer, artist and radical creative Charles Jeffrey, 28, is the man at the helm of the fashion industry's most talked-about new addition: Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY. The label is both a fashion brand and a cult club night, each informing the other. As noted by US Vogue, "Jeffrey is currently the upholder of all that is human, creative and cheerful about British Fashion."

SUMMER 2019 EYEWEAR COLLECTION

This season, the CHANEL Summer 2019 eyewear collection is a story about sunshine, the beach, natural materials and light. It is also a story of fashion, inspired by the House's Spring-Summer 2019 Ready-toWear runway show. Faded or raw, denim lends itself to all sorts of creations. Now CHANEL is using it for some decidedly modern glasses. A small, ultra-light oval frame is worn high up on the nose transforming a gaze or a face. Rimmed with denim and held by metallic temples, it comes with lenses ranging from a transparent sea blue to a grey-blue and deep blue. A pilot frame, also swathed in denim, accompanies and imposes a masculine/feminine style. Designs in acetate with exclusive prints - rectangle and oval for the sunglasses, butterfly and oval for the opticals - are adorned with wide temples in denim quilted by needle or by laser. One trompe-l’œil that calls for another: a denim or sand effect in acetate highlights delicate metal frames with blue or amber lenses. Straw hats and rope espadrilles are the signs of a sunny summer. CHANEL daringly reinvents them as a detail on a line of glasses in seaside hues. Composed of three feminine and joyful shapes they require an artisanal savoir-faire. Round and bursting with freshness, the first is enhanced with hand-woven straw inserted into the circles surrounding the lens. Five different shades of lenses, from ultra-pale blue to smoky grey, are combined with these metal frames. As a nod to CHANEL, the ultimate frame, in black and beige, revisits the emblematic two-tone of the House. A translucent acetate surrounds the rectangular and butterfly frames and extends into wide, comfortable temples around which a fine rope is meticulously rolled by hand. These timeless shapes come in tones of sand, tortoiseshell, blue, black and olive to support the gradated lenses. Playing a classical score that's never just that. This is what defines the subtlety of CHANEL. While its glasses in denim or dressed in straw and cord are discreetly marked with a double C, the House also plays with the opposite of this sobriety on a third line of glasses in the Summer 2019 collection. As with certain pieces of the Ready-to-Wear and certain accessories of the season, the name CHANEL appears in all its letters on the dark acetate of optical frames and sunglasses. In pale gold, silver, brown or black, the six XXL letters are laid in relief on the temples, perfectly assumed, on acetate in black or taupe, fawn, grey and brown coloured tortoiseshell. Deliberately classic colours, duos that are occasionally tone-on-tone or enhanced with lenses in 24-carat yellow gold and XL frames with easy to wear lines: round or square for the sunglasses, rectangular, square and round for the opticals. Asserting one's style every day, merging fashion and timelessness to set the pace, this is the guiding principal for eyewear according to CHANEL. The glasses in the Summer 2019 collection will be available in boutiques from March 2019.

''A regular beauty regime with good products, plenty of sleep, water, protection from the elements and pay attention to the mind and body, without becoming obsessed.”

lip TREATS I believe that you entice with your eyes but you seal the deal with your mouth so this transitional season I want to focus on keeping the lips in perfect condition… As you age your lips become less voluminous and you may notice the appearance of fine lines, this is commonly found in smokers and those who have spent more time in the sun. With this season's new focus on lips, you need to ensure that you treat the lips like your skin and make sure you have a routine in place (and don’t forget the skin around the lips!).

MilliOnAir

I like to use a soft toothbrush to gently exfoliate the lips removing any dry flakes before adding any products. To maintain a youthful appearance Sensai Cellular Performance Total Lip Treatment can be used around the mouth as well as on the lips plumping and hydrating whilst helping to diminish and prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

The catwalks saw both powdery long-lasting matte lips (Rodarte / Escada) on one side and the return of ultra vinyl glossy lips on the other (Adeam) ‌ The lip prep product you choose will enhance your final finish/texture of choice.

If the lips require an intense treatment Elizabeth Arden Intensive Lip Repair Balm helps to lock in moisture. You only need to apply in the evenings for smooth flakefree lips and as you apply at night you don’t have to worry about it interfering with the products you want to use in the day. Ameliorate Intensive Lip Treatment with LaH6 Skin Hydrating Complex is a great alternative for cracked or very dry lips.

For fans of K-beauty Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a great addition to your routine, apply a small amount at night (it is easy to apply too thickly) and when you wipe off in the morning you will have soft, hydrated lips that you won’t be able to stop touching.

If you like an oily balm to hydrate and nourish your lips it will decrease the long-lasting effects of matte shades. Clarins Instant Light contains jojoba, sunflower and shea to nourish and waxes to intensify the longlasting wear. It can equally be worn alone for a subtle sheen.

I’ve carried Sisley’s Confort Extreme Nutritive Lip Balm in my kit since its launch it’s incredibly quick to hydrate without containing water so will help to protect even in the harshest of temperatures whether that’s for a last minute jaunt in the snow or constantly switching between heat and the drying effect of air conditioning. Apply sparingly and it will leave a light healthy looking sheen rather than a shine on the lips perfect for applying pre-creamy lip colour or glosses.

Forr added volume as you prep, Indeed Labs Hydraluron Volumising Lip Treatment contains Volulip (TM) and ultra-filling spheres in addition to the hydrating actives and ingredients. To increase your pout further this seasons glossy looks are perfect! Dab gloss to the centre of the lips and press together to spread centrally highlighting and enhancing the lips.

JessieBuckley by Beauty Expert Ciona Johnson-King

Working with Jessie Buckley on the promotion of Wild Rose started last year with a whirlwind of travel, premieres, press days and gigs (where lucky audiences got to hear first hand that Jessie’s singing is as explosive as her acting). It’s so exciting that the movie is finally now in cinemas and getting great reviews (film critic James King said on Radio 2 that Jessie was “a force of nature”!) When you’ve got a grueling schedule ahead of you, skincare is key in order for your client to really radiate - especially when a good night’s sleep can never be guaranteed. Here are a few of my ‘go-to’ products that always make life easier for my actors... and for me!

Dr Sebagh’s Rose De Vie Serum £129.00 delivers Rosehip Oil to calm and revive the skin. Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins £30.00 is an overnight peel and moisturiser with fruit derived AHAs to rid the dull and being the glow. Medik8’s Hydr8 B5 £40.00 contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin. Twelve Hyaluroil Lip Treatment £28.00 is a plant oil rich formula which softens and strengthens dry lips. Omoroviczia Intensive Hydrating Cream £132.00 This gives an instant plumping luxury to the skin. Nature Bisse C+C Vitamin body cream £86.00 boasts soft citrus notes to lift the spirit, whilst also beautifully hydrating the body.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturiser £18.50 is a classic. I love its light weight moisturising delivery. Elemis Superfood Kefir-Tea Mist £26.00 is an antioxidant with a natural prebiotic to help balance the skin and leave it hydrated. Fab for spritzing the skin whilst on a flight. Benefit Dream Screen SPF45 £27.00 is a little gem! It’s matte and non oily, plus has a high SPF. Intraceuticals Rejuvenate Eye Masks £39.95 is an instant pick-me-up to awaken tired eyes and reduce puffiness. I love to lay these under a client’s eyes whilst working on their eye make up. For this gorgeous natural look for the British Independent Film Awards (where Jessie score a Best Actress nomination and a Most Promising Newcomer win!) we balanced the skin with Chantcaille Future Skin Foundation £68.00 and used Nars radiant creamy concealer £24.00 to brighten under eyes. Charlotte Tilbury ‘s Wonder Glow gave a soft cheek highlight then I added a transparent warmth with Lancôme Cushion Blush Subtil £30.00 in Sorbet Grenadine.

Eyes were brushed with Bobbi Brown Antique Rose, Camel & Sable eyeshadows £19.50 each with a touch of MAC Dazzleshadow Liquid £16.50 in Blinking Brilliant. Elf Waterproof Gel Eyeliner £5.00 in Coffee gave us a little more punch into the base of the lashes plus I used ByTerry Eyebrow Mascara £26.00 the for brows. Natural lips were emphasised with MAC Spice Lip Pencil £14.00 and Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani Lipstick in Bamboo £31.00. Jessie’s hair was prepped with Bumble and Bumble Prep Primer £20.00 then blow dried smooth and textured with Kevin Murphy Easy Rider £25.00. We side-swept the fringe, artfully leaving out a few strands and randomly gripping up the rest of the hair. The result? A look as effortlessly classy as the lady herself.

The answer to our health is all around us by Bridget Hancock

D

iversity and Diet with Dr Gary Martin Ethnobotanist, founder and director of the Global Diversity Foundation. Outside the hustle of Marrakech lies the tranquil 8 acre estate Jnane Tamsna set amongst date palms amidst olive tress, white bouganvillea, organic vegetable patches and herb gardens. I am here to discuss Diversity and Diet with Dr Gary Martin Ethnobotanist, founder and director of the Global Diversity Foundation.

This is home to Dr Martin, who was diagnosed with Spondyloarthritis in 2014 at the age of 55. He was suffering from extreme pain in every part his body and decided to take control of his own health and diet. Seeking medical help and taking tests he found his inflammatory marker C reactive Protein was sky high and he was prescribed a protocol of medication consisting of anti-inflammatory drugs. Knowing this to be a main contributor to leaky gut and agreeing to take as little as possible, Dr Martin decided instead to follow an Elimination diet to remove all Starch and chose to live on a diet composed of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and dried fruits, a little fish, some goats cheese and goat yoghurt, turmeric, black pepper, and a little Devils claw from Namibia. Three years later his inflammatory markers are right down and he came off all anti inflammatory drugs. In fact his doctor asked him what he did so she could share it with all her clients. Now at the age of 60 and knowing that greater diversity is required Dr Martin has put starches back in his diet, but he is very selective and although as yet cannot tolerate buckwheat, which is not wheat and does not contain gluten, has been able to include locally produced Azenbou, a couscous made out of young barley which is steamed over aromatic herbs and dried, toasted and cracked to become a couscous. Incorporating foods such as these he is still free of pain and I can barely keep up with him whilst he is walking Smoky his devoted dog, as they rush to the next meeting with the local farmers, who are bringing in samples to discuss expanding the Ethno botanica brand to include more products. The collaboration with local communities supports the Moroccan locals whilst raising awareness to guests of the Jnane Tamsna hotel.

We are all very quick to eliminate Gluten but the issue that many people face maybe the result of the use of Glyphosate that is sprayed on the wheatcrops just prior to harvest. Glyphosate disrupts the gut microbiome and furthermore it affects the beneficial bacteria allowing pathogens to overgrow. This is the product that is used to spray paths and driveways to kill all weeds and grasses. So the question we need to ask is it the gluten, the chemicals sprayed on the crops or the starch ? Dr Martin has created his EthnoBotanica brand of foods that are traceable, traditional and organic and is living proof that diet can restore leaky gut, reduce inflammation and thus eliminate pain and products can be found at the Hotel Jnane Tamsna. MilliOnAir | Aesthetics

| SKINCARE | AESTHETICS | BEAUTY Q&A by Beauty Contributor Steven Smith

MilliOnAir presents the King and Queen of the aesthetic world - Doctor Ioannis Liakas and Vicky Grammatikopoulou. Their clients include celebrities, top models - and even royalty. Ioannis is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, senior lecturer at Queen Mary’s Medical School and an associate member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. Before moving into the business side of aesthetics, Vicky was a teacher trainer and university lecturer. Together they are Vie Aesthetics, and run leading clinics in Harley Street, Germany and Southend. I really want to have Plexr done on my eyes and several other areas of my face that are looking wrinkly. My problem is that I do not want anyone knowing I have had it done. How much time would I need to take off work and how can I get it to heal quickly? Maggie Peterson, Blackheath. Maggie Peterson, Blackheath. PlexR is a very strong plasma fusion device and very effective in removing excess skin. Furthermore, it promotes collagen formation in the treated areas and after the healing the skin looks fresher and more youthful. The crusts and the swelling take around 5-7 days to resolve, with the worst period being the first 3-4 days. You can cover it all with foundation and or SPF-based cream, however it is difficult to make it fully invisible, especially in the first 3/4 days. You may want to wear sunglasses or plan a few days at home.

MilliOnAir

I have had a larger than average nose all my life, but the idea of a nose job frightens me (and is not in my budget). Could aesthetics make a difference instead of cosmetic surgery? Sue Clever, Virginia Waters. It is understandable to be frightened of surgery. Fillers are a good alternative, especially for covering and correcting small asymmetries or bumps on the nose. Furthermore, the treatment lasts for over a year in some cases, making the procedure highly affordable. With pre-allocation of a local anesthetic prior to the procedure, you are unlikely to feel any pain either. Please feel free to drop in for a consultation with our doctor, who will be able to asses and advise you further Can vitamin infusion drips really help me lose weight? Diane Masters, Hull. The best way to lose weight is through exercise and a balanced diet. Very often though, diets make us feel tired/ exhausted and we end up losing motivation. You can combine diet and exercise with intravenous vitamin drips; cocktails that contain multiple vitamins and enzymes that support weight loss and metabolism, whilst also increasing your energy levels.

I am starting to lose weight and my wife says she prefers me cuddly than saggy (the excess skin is not attractive). I have been taking myself to the gym over the last two months and that’s helping. Is there anything you can do to help firm the skin? Dave Smith, Brighton. Well done for achieving your goals of losing weight. It can be disappointing when such weight loss leaves you with troublesome excess skin. Depending on the problem areas and the amount of excess skin, we would have a number of options available to you at our clinics. a) Fat loss injections for localised fat - these will help lose more inches whilst simultaneously helping the skin to tighten. b) HIFU - ultrasonic waves can be applied on larger body parts offering further fat loss and tightening of tissues. c) Endopeel - tightening of tissues through multiple injections in area, for example abdomen or pecs. All of the above are highly effective and can be combined.

What would you suggest is the best way to have a mole on my face removed? My husband says it’s my witchy spot as it has hairs coming out of it too. I laugh but deep down it hurts Brenda Welch, Edinburgh. Moles are very common problems for many of our clients. Our best option to remove it would be using plasma fusion (PlexR). It is pain free and removes moles without leaving scars. One or two sessions are usually enough to remove moles permanently.

Please can you tell me what I can do to have a more masculine jaw line? I have had an overbite all my life and not the most chiseled features to begin with. I do not want to sound vain, but it would make me feel more confident. Howard McConnel, Edinburgh. Indeed, the jaw line being more enhanced and forming a visible rectangular shape at the jaw angle is considered a very masculine feature. This is fairly easily achievable with fillers and the effects last for 9-12 months. The procedure is pain free and can be done in about 20 minutes. You will need to book a consultation first to assess your suitability.

INGE THERON.

Woman of Substance by Juliet Herd

I

nge Theron is at the airport about to catch a budget flight to Malta, where she’s scheduled to visit a packaging factory in search of sustainable options for her new skincare line.“Oh,the glamour,”laughs the founder of FaceGym, one of the fastest-growing and most innovative wellness businesses on the high street.

In the space of just four years, this can-do disruptor has turned the beauty industry on its head by devising a noninvasive face lift, harnessing age-old techniques for exercising the facial muscles and scaffolding - with a thoroughly modern spin. In fact, FaceGym is more about fitness than beauty, hence why the treatment is described as a workout rather than a facial. From a pioneering start with a small concession in London’s Selfridges four years ago, Inge, 43, is at the forefront of the new natural wellness wave and about to open her eighth studio (note: not spa or salon) in Notting Hill with plans to roll out more both in the UK and abroad. There are already two studios in New York – one in Saks 5th Avenue, and the other, a flagship in NoHo - with an LA branch due to open in September. As an entrepreneur, it wasn’t South Africa-born Inge’s first big idea – she’d cut her teeth on creating a board game, called Hollywood Domino, which quickly gained a cult following among A-listers such as Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz, Demi Moore and Salma Hayek. The game’s success was short-lived, however, and by 2008, burnt-out and disillusioned, she found herself looking for new challenges.Almost by chance, she fell into the role - that of“spa junkie” columnist for the Financial Times How to Spend it – that would lead to her next lightbulb idea. Over the next six years, she visited more than 50 spas around the world, undertaking endless fitness classes, antiageing treatments and detoxes, not to mention attending countless health and nutrition conventions. She also began designing hotel spas on the side, and there was little she didn’t know about the industry, constantly logging new techniques and trends. But it wasn’t until she was left house-bound for three months after a series of disastrous cosmetic surgery procedures, that she finally felt compelled to act – and develop her own unique concept. Here,London-based Inge, who has two daughters,Tesse, four, and Assisi, two,by her Italian financier fiancé,explains what it takes to be a female entrepreneur and how a quest to be both successful and healthy led to her latest lightbulb venture.

Tell us about the journey that inspired FaceGym? I was living in the Hollywood Hills when the big financial crash happened and our board game (which she co-founded with Daya Fernandez and later sold to Hasbro) didn’t do as well as it should have done. The stress of ideating a concept as nuts as Hollywood Domino and bringing it into 120 Walmart stores in nine months, was so draining. My dream was shattered and I was a mess. My body was collapsing from lack of sleep, stress and I had borderline depression. I’d had no mentorship or advice, and at that point, I realised I needed to get out, so I booked a one-way ticket to India. “I decided I was going to travel the world to find out how to be successful and healthy. I couldn’t find balance; every time I did something in

business, it was all or nothing. Building a business shouldn’t cost you your health – I thought there must be techniques you can teach yourself to manage stressful moments. For me, it was about learning meditation and yoga. I was in Rishikesh learning meditation when Gillian de Bono (editor of the FT’s How To Spend It) called and asked what I was up to. She was intrigued by the idea of walking away from corporate life and going on a huge journey of self-discovery. As we talked more, she decided I should go undercover as the spa and wellness industry was so unregulated, and said: ‘I want you to find out what is going on’. I literally couldn’t write a shopping list back then but she mentored me and for the next few years I would review without fear or favour, uncovering the good, the bad and the downright terrible underbelly of the wellness industry. Describe some of your experiences? I spent time at Uluru with the Aboriginals; in the jungles of Mexico and in the Amazon, working with local tribes, sourcing sustainable products. I was totally on my own, travelling on a one-way ticket like a backpacker. I would talk to people next to me at dinners, prayer groups, meditation sessions or on planes and plan my journey based on their recommendations and experiences. I met someone who told me about a fasting retreat in Thailand and I lived there in a monastery for weeks, drinking broth and learning how to alkaline your life and reduce the risk of cancer. I was mummified in pink clay- drenched bandages in Mexico and human wrapped (OnoMaki) in Japan. There were some scary moments, too – once, I was assaulted by a male massage therapist in Turkey - that made me aware of the shady stuff that can happen on the road less travelled, particularly if you are a young woman. There are also a lot of vulnerable women of all ages who think that a new face or a new nose is the ticket to a new life, and who are exploited by charlatan doctors, so It felt really empowering to reveal this side of the industry. What prompted your lightbulb moment? I had a series of really bad procedures over a three-month period [in late 2013] and looked terrible. I saw a different doctor every month and was given what seemed like a lifetime of injectables. MilliOnAir

The fillers went hard and I looked like I had sausages under my eyes. I also had a vampire facial and a thread lift, which let my face battered and bruised. I felt there had to be an alternative. At the same time, I was seeing these new generation fitness models such as SoulCycle and barre and thought, ‘Why is no one working on the muscles of the face in a similar methodology - surely the process of firming your ass and face was the same as the muscles are the scaffolding of both?’. It was time to create something new. Six years of being a spa junkie and all that experience was distilled into FaceGym.”

What were the main challenges for getting your business off the ground? Raising the money wasn’t that difficult as there is a lot of funding out there for good ideas - although this was a particularly crazy one - but my investors were prepared to take the risk. Having that backing early on, taught me so much. I don’t think I would have had as much chutzpah if I hadn’t had the structure that private equity can offer a start-up. The biggest lesson was on the operations and execution side – I massively underestimated what it took to run a business in Selfridges; opening all day every day and employing human capital I’d never managed before. It was relentless. I also got engaged the day FaceGym started - 1st May 2014 - and within four months of launching, I was pregnant with my first daughter. There were days when I didn’t think I was going to get through. The only reason I kept going was because I’d taken money from people. It’s difficult for female entrepreneurs, particularly during the early stages of raising a family. When Tesse was eight months old, I became pregnant again, so I had three babies [including FaceGym] under three! What you learn as an entrepreneur is that anyone can have a good idea but 90 percent of them fail through lack of proper execution, so most of your time is spent fighting fires. It’s not fun or glamorous. MilliOnAir

173

How did you come up with the name, FaceGym? The name came to me first – I thought, I need to create a face gym. Then I worked on the concept. I wanted to imitate what we do in the gym for our bodies. People don’t know how many facial muscles they have or what any of their names are and I felt there was a wonderful opportunity to educate a new breed of consumer on how to effectively and non-invasively look after their faces. We’re very far behind in the UK; if you look at Asia and Russia, they have a huge history of facial exercises and the results are astonishing.

How has FaceGym been received by the established beauty industry?

In the beginning, none of the advanced technology brands would give me any machines and it took a long time to find businesses to back my idea. I still buy all my equipment from the company that first supported me. We are certainly not part of the skincare elite we are outliers and that stems from the fact we don’t even see ourselves as a beauty brand - we are in the facial fitness industry. We have a small, very clear brief to deliver - we don’t focus on things like pigmentation and acne or mainstream skin concerns in our studios - instead we focus on lifting, How careful are you about expansion and choosing studio firming and sculpting. Half our customers choose surgery locations? or Botox and visit us for ‘tune ups’ between doctor’s visits. I believe there is space for us all. We’re not like the beauty We use social media to help us choose locations – for industry, telling people what is wrong with them and example, a lot of fans said come to the Upper East Side saying, ‘Here’s a £4000 plan’. We’re trying to change the [Manhattan], so we’re going there next. Although it seems conversation. We start from a place of asking people, like we’re opening new studios very fast, we’re really ‘How can we amplify your positives?’. We’re not preying careful about locations and everything is run by the board on their negativities, because that’s what I experienced as with a gate system in place. It’s about striking a balance; a younger woman writing my column; I was made to feel we want to be available to customers but, at the same so insecure being told, ‘You’ve got to have half a face lift’ time, we don’t want to open so many that we put the and to get a nose job when I was 32 years old! That is what business at risk. Making sure we get the right locations is repulsed me. It’s not how I want our customers to feel. key. How important is it for you to remain hands-on? When you want to do things differently, you actually have to be on the ground. To truly innovate and find solutions, you have to have a laser-sharp vision of exactly what it is you want to do, and because you’re often creating products, services and tools that don’t exist, you’ve got to go to places yourself and meet with people, source the materials and work with design teams in faraway places. At this early stage, there are no benchmarks and there’s no one I can send to fight those battles for me. That must mean challenging the status quo at times? Everywhere I go, wherever I turn, people say ‘no’. But I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. For instance, I want sustainable packaging that works well and looks beautiful, so I will jump on a plane and find a solution, which is my mission today.

MilliOnAir

were too long and the variety of snacks poor, so I convinced my mum to take me to the wholesale supermarket and I bought big double bags of sweets and I would never say ‘never’ to injectables. At the moment, my product is delivering wonderful results for me, but as I sold them in the playground. I made four times’ profit on each bag - I was the cool candy dealer! So, I suppose I was get older, should I feel the need for something more, I born an entrepreneur.” know there are wonderful practitioners who do great work. Technology has moved on so much, you can now get incredible results without having to go to extremes. I’d never close the door on anything but my philosophy is, ‘Beauty, but not at any cost’. I will not put my health and immune system at risk for the sake of a few wrinkles. Would you ever consider invasive treatment again?

You grew up in Pretoria and Johannesburg – how did your upbringing inform your entrepreneurial spirit? When did you move to London? “My mum is a travel guide and historian, and she would never allow us to fly - we had to drive everywhere and stop to look at a flower or a mountain or the site of a battle. We’d spend hours talking about ideas, which made me very curious. My dad died when I was little and I was an only child, so my mum was my biggest influence. “As South Africans, we are very entrepreneurial and have an incredible work ethic. It gives you perspective and makes to accept that not everyone will like you and that’s okay. You are building a business, not auditioning for a you respect the environment and your legacy so much more. I want to make my daughters proud of me; I want popularity contest. If you want to succeed today, you to prove to them that you are fundamentally responsible need to be super prepared and fearless. What’s the worst thing that can happen? Lose money? I’m prepared to put for your own success. It wasn’t easy growing up as a it all on the next venture. I’ve learnt that the value of dyslexic in South Africa, but you can’t blame your circumstances. What is your earliest memory of an act of positivity.... I started playing golf and tennis from a young age and both bring back fond memories of encouragement. A positive approach from the coach was essential, especially whilst I was at a young age, to spur a sense of achievement as I progressed. It is so important to surround yourself with people who push you forward and help you become a better person; whether it is when you’re learning a new sport or starting a new class at school. Why is Positivity as opposed to negativity important to you? Quite simply, positivity brings out the best in people. It spurs creativity, enables you to think outside of the proverbial box and allows you to think of a brighter future and understand how we can get there. Approaching any situation with a positive mindset is key and I maintain that a huge element of the eventual outcome will reflect your positivity and confidence throughout that process. On the flip side, negativity is your worst enemy; it boxes you in, clips your wings and never allows you to achieve your best. Who has had the most positive influence in your life and why? My mum has always been incredibly supportive in anything I have chosen to put my mind to. Having someone who can provide you with that confidence to do something makes the risk feel far less daunting than tackling life’s challenges by yourself. But don’t just blindly rely upon the enthusiasm of others and make sure the voices you listen to aren’t just saying what they think you want to hear! Which positive person from history would you like to meet.... I would love to go back in time and meet Steve Jobs. He was a visionary who didn’t follow the rule book. Instead of asking the world what we wanted he used great intellect and creativity to develop products that we didn’t even realise we wanted. And of all the entrepreneurial journeys out there, he certainly went through it all which must have taken extreme resilience.

MilliOnAir

183

What is the most positive piece of advice you pass on to people you meet.... I always tell people to see everything as a challenge and to look for the solution. If you’re worried whether you can achieve something, start by viewing it as a challenge rather than an intimidating task, then look to understand the solution and how you can achieve the desired outcome. Once you’ve done that, execute methodically. What is the most positive song on your play list. My playlists have been replaced by podcasts and I get a huge sense of positivity listening to how successful entrepreneurs have tackled challenges and gone on to discover incredibly successful solutions.

My personal favourite, Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman.

How do you deal with negative people.... I try to surround myself with positive people as the effects are compounded. Unfortunately, we all have good days and bad days so I will always consider the position of someone with a negative mindset and offer any advice I may have, but I will likely take a step back from there if the negativity persists. What is the most positive film you have watched... I recently watched Moneyball which is based on the true story of the Oakland A baseball team whose 2002 season transformed how teams are selected today. It depicts a fascinating story of the general manager taking on a revolutionary, and highly criticised, approach to the game and outsmarting the richer clubs by using a quantitative selection process to identify undervalued players. I found it to be a great example of going against the trend, having conviction during hard times and believing in the plan you have put together.

MilliOnAir

Who is the most positive person in your life.... Whether accurate or not, I view myself to be the most positive person in my life. Ultimately, nobody knows what I’m trying to achieve better than myself and it is key to believe in yourself rather than relying upon others to tell what you can or cannot achieve. What is the key to you being resilient.... I find that having a high level of resilience comes back to having self-confidence, believing in yourself and how well you have planned ahead. With the right mindset everything is simply another challenge awaiting another solution to be found and along that process there will be success and failure, both of which you learn from and take with you to the next challenge. What is your inspirational catchphrase....

I don’t do catchphrases. We can save them for the TV hosts. easyGuide founder Blake Reddy with billionaire businessman Sir Stelios Haji-loannou, owner of the easy family of brands who has invested in the project.

If you could sit down with four positive people who would they be and what qualities would they bring.... I’m not one for naming names, but they would portray a sense of ambition, humbleness, intelligence and creativity. Do you get positivity from religion or spirituality.... No matter what you call it, I think it’s essential to take the time to reflect, appreciate your surroundings and be thankful. Whether that’s a prayer or simply a few undistracted minutes of thought, we should always find time for those precious moments. How do you react positively to fear.... I find the key is to ensure you have adequately planned ahead and remind yourself that you have done so. If you are well prepared, then there is little to be fearful of. Ideally everything goes to plan and you succeed, but if it doesn’t, you must embrace failure, learn, and then take your next step forward with that added knowledge. This will help you become less fearful and enable you to turn that fear into a learning exercise to ensure you improve and make new highs each time. MilliOnAir

Melanie Cantor

Melanie Cantor defies the notion that women become invisible after fifty. Scouted by a casting director as she sat minding her own business waiting for a train at King’s Cross, last year she became a poster girl for the Dove Real Beauty campaign, something she had never expected in her youth let alone having just turned sixty. “I thought the girl who accosted me was joking. The first thing she asked was if I had ever been an actor or a model,” to which my response was “Have you seen me stand up.” Melanie, it has to be said, is no giant. Perhaps Kylie size sums her up. But several words of flattery later, she agreed to be put forward for the campaign and the rest is…well, it’s on instagram! MilliOnAir

For thirty years, Melanie was an agent and publicist for some of the biggest stars in British TV including Ulrika Jonsson, Melanie Sykes and Melinda Messenger. Eventually she decided it was time to focus on achieving a personal dream so she gave up her agency, hung up her agent’s hat and turned to writing novels. Ten years later, she was still writing novels but remained unpublished. “After the first and most painful rejection, I became so used to receiving thank you but no thank yous from agents, I thought I would never see my name on a book spine. But I never gave up. I couldn’t. I knew the only thing I wanted to do at this stage in my life was write, whether or not I got published, so I carried on.” Finally, in February last year she received a reply to her submission from Felicity Blunt at Curtis Brown. “I was reading the email, scanning it really quickly, getting past all the niceties and waiting to read the but. There was always a but. But this time there wasn’t. I burst into tears. I had done it.” A few tweaks later, the manuscript was sent out to publishers and after a three way auction “Death And Other Happy Endings” found its home at Transworld Publishers. Much to Melanie’s surprise, at the same time, a deal was agreed with Pamela Dorman/Viking Books in the States. The book will also be translated into nine other languages including Russian, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian and Portuguese.

The story is about 43 year old Jennifer who has just been given three months to live. Instead of going on a trip of a lifetime, she decides her biggest regret is not the places she hasn’t seen but the words she has left unsaid. So she sits down and writes letters to the three most important people in her life, telling them the things she’s always wanted to say but never dared. The truth. But as Jennifer learns, once the truth is out there, it’s very hard to put back. “I think the themes in the book – death, lost love, regret – are universal which is why it has appealed across so many territories. And it’s not all doom and gloom, it’s very witty too. Funnily enough, the first foreign language in which the book will be published is Swedish. “I was posted all over the Stockholm Red Line (tube) last year in the Dove campaign. It feels serendipitous that the book should follow.” Death and Other Happy Endings amazon.co.uk and all good bookstores from 13 June.

THE FRANKLIN LONDON

By Co-Director Marcella Martinelli

MilliOnAir

Sophia Loren or Gina Lollobrigida couldn’t fault the taffeta and velvet bedecked dining room, and the glittering and intimate mirrored bar. The rooms are likewise ravishing with their sober sandstone bathrooms. As per Anouska Hempel’s signature, She takes her inspiration from her travels - particularly evident in the ground floor of grey limestone and Carrara and in her elegantly opulent interiors of mirrored furniture, gorgeous Italian velvets and silks as well as in Ikaats from Istanbul. One point is delightfully English, and that the setting of the Franklin, in amongst the elite of Knightsbridge’s best, with Egerton Gardens at the back with its vivid green manicured lawn lining the period buildings. The elegant Victorian building embraces the beauty and calm of the private gardens, with the glorious London plane trees which the garden rooms can enjoy of a seasonal spectacle. The building, acquired by Italian entrepreneur Elisabetta Fabri, President and CEO of the Italian group Starhotels is entirely designed by Anouska Hempel, and through out there has been the use of carrara marble by Lapicida. Anouska Hempel and Lapicida launches a new collection of accessories here, drawing on classical inspirations and capturing the duality of a material which is both structural and highly decorative. Anouska Hempel always specifies stone in her designs, cherishing it’s natural colours, rough and smooth textures and profound connections with earths history. For this collection, she chose two rare and extraordinary marbles; purest crystalline “Thassos White”, counterpointed by deepest “Infinity Black”. Lapicida, in turn sourced the finest grades of both stones for a manufacturing process involving countless hours of skilled hand-finishing to achieve the finest form and finish. The pieces are available online at www.anouskahempeldesign.com and at the Franklin Hotel straight off the table.

Singapore Residence by Anoushka Hempel By Co-Director Marcella Martinelli

The collaboration on the luxury project of Singapore saw Anouska Hemple working alongside Robert.A.M. Stern, the renowned New York based architect, Professor, and author. The creation of the background and stage setting for Anouska was the foundation of a successful first collaboration. The architectural language between the two entities was open and inclusive, and importantly, in tune with the public. “We take great pleasure in architectures capacity to create drama of daily life” – Robert.A.M.Stern.

Large wide stone steps of 1.5 meters, lead up to the main entrance, flanked by demi-lunes of lavender on each side. A huge black door opens out into another world…the inside world. There is an abundance of warmth and personality in the objects d’art and story telling that goes beyond the predictable…Something that takes you through the classical orientation of interiors mixed with a strict colour palette: It’s all strong and strict colour, but at the same time cozy and comfy for friends, with the mimicry of the orient. An equestrian focus runs through some of the areas of the property, throwing us back to the heritage of polo, and the family.

THE EXPERIENCE MilliOnAir

The bar and the dining room are off the main lobby, and an array of Japanese paper screens dance with tigers, lanterns and symbols recalling the atmosphere of the East. Hereto black and white repeats on the inside as it does the outside echoing the exteriors. All aspects are combined on the interior as they are on the exterior, in a very eclectic way. Water ripples over the deepest darkest green pool which sits in between the drawing room and the kitchen – somewhere to throw your saucepan into, if you can’t take the heat. www.anouskahempeldesign.com MilliOnAir

SAMANTHAS TRAVEL DIARY

Have you ever dreamt of what it must be like to be totally lost in the wilderness? And when I say wilderness yes I mean the likes of lets say‌ Zimbabwe, Africa. Well, lost may be a slight exaggeration, however, emotionally I have never felt so free with such clarity....

MilliOnAir

Our trip to Africa came totally out of the blue. Two weeks prior to going I was approached by a friend who owns a stock image company, Image Source. She was planning a shoot in Cape Town and needed a couple to get involved, so naturally Jean and I jumped at the opportunity when asked to go to South Africa. Wanting to make the most out of our trip we decided to contact the lifestyle and tourism company Pure Africa, to help us plan the remainder of our travels. As this really was so last minute we really didn’t have enough time to even think about what we wanted to do whilst there. All I knew was that there was no way I was going to Africa and not going on Safari! Thankfully the guys at Pure Africa dealt with everything, and when I say everything I mean, from the moment we touched down in Cape Town to the car rental to the vineyard tour right through to booking our internal flights into the bush in Zimbabwe plus all of our restaurant bookings inbetween. All we had to do was say yes to the proposed itinerary. So leading up to our adventure Jean and I started watching a tonne of documentaries on wildlife. That however, could have never prepared us for how truly spectacular it was to experience first hand everything Africa had to offer. So lets start at the beginning with Cape Town...

THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE We managed to find very reasonable flights with British Airways. The flight was eleven hours and thirty minutes in total which compared to our trip to Tahiti was a breeze! We arrived on the over night flight which landed at 7.45am well rested and excited to explore South Africa. We had hired a car from the airport as we were advised that with all we had planned this would be the most convenient. We then headed to our friend's apartment where we would be spending the first night before heading to the villa for the shoot. So after quickly showering we started to make our way towards our first stop, Babylonstoren vineyard. Self-described as one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms which houses not only its fruit and vegetable garden of beauty and diversity, but also accommodation, fine food and wine plus lots more. Already Cape Towns beautifully versatile landscape was blowing us away and That is even before we had laid eyes on the magic of the vineyard! We were in a slight state of trance that we were actually there. The exceptionally quick lead up seemed to have flied by in the blink of an eye and here we were driving through the South-African countryside surrounded by an aggressive mountainous back drop which was unassumingly draped in clouds as the sun relentlessly burnt through.

WINTER ESCAPES MilliOnAir

19

Our first day well and truly set the bar high for what we had in store for the remainder of our adventure. Day 2 however, catapulted us into a whole new level! Our friend had planned to take us on a hike up ‘Lion's Head’ mountain to watch the sunrise. Lion's head is placed between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. It peaks at six hundred and sixty-nine metres above sea level and it is the best way to get a three-hundred and sixty degree view of the city so it is a must for all visitors. With our alarm set for 5.30am we began our climb at 6am. Jean and I love to hike so we were more than excited for this challenge. With chains and ladders to take you across thin ledges and up to the next stage of the climb we felt totally immersed in our surroundings. Once we reached the top, the view of the sun rising up from beyond the horizon was breathtaking. The glowing amber and nectarine light bled over the city as the rays protruded out like golden pathways. In that moment, in amongst the other hikers all standing absorbing the beauty which was unfolding before us everyone became one and everyone was equal. I for one couldn’t resist the overwhelming sense of gratitude I felt In that moment. Apparently, brunch in one's active wear with a subtle hiker's glow is very on trend in Cape Town. So, not to shy away from local formalities we headed to Oranjezicht City Farm to devour acai bowls and freshly squeezed juice. The market was heaven to us and exactly what Jean and I look for whilst exploring new countries. All local farmers and brands under one roof supplying healthy organic produce. It was quite the experience, and as explained everyone was dressed for the occasion, activewear central!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. We then spent the next four nights at the villa with the production crew shooting a tonne of lifestyle videography. Our exposure to Cape Town was minimal just because of the tight shoot schedule but from what we saw of it we knew we would be back to explore further very soon. So Thursday morning we made our way back to Cape Town airport ready to head to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This is where our real adventure began… We took another very early flight just to maximise our time in Vic Falls. In fact, our whole trip consisted of 5.30-6am starts. This however, didn’t feel like a burden as every morning we woke up so excited for what the day holds. In Africa, everyday is different, you never know what you’re going to see or experience so you don’t want to waste a minute sleeping when the reality is so much better! Landing in Vic Falls was so different to Cape Town. The atmosphere changed dramatically from somewhat cosmopolitan to completely authentic and rural it was like stepping out into a whole new world. As we made our way out the airport Tribal dressed local-men were gathered performing traditional welcome routines which in itself had us transfixed.

MOAÂ | Â APRIL 2019 We had a pre-booked transfer which took us to Lokuthula Safari lodges. When we were discussing what we wanted from our trip with the guys at Pure Africa, we really emphasised on the fact that we wanted our experience to be as authentic as possible. Even though we are partial to the finer things in life, whilst in Africa we wanted to feel completely immersed in our surroundings. This is why we chose to stay at Lokuthula instead of the Victoria Falls hotel which is renowned. The lodge was placed In amongst the wildlife so coming back and finding the local warthog and vervet monkey congregation running riot in your pathway was the norm! The main hotel was home to the dreamiest restaurant which was decorated with a thick grass roof and exposed timber beams (which were clearly a play ground for the monkeys). It overlooked the crocodile infested waterhole which attracted the likes of elephant families, Giraffes and Hyenas just to name a few. So to say we had dinner with a view would be an understatement.

Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. As expected our Zimbabwe itinerary was as jampacked as our previous in Cape Town. Once we checked into our lodge we were shortly after collected by our transfer to take us to the Zambezi river where we would embark on our sunset cruise. Sailing down the river in-between Zambia and Zimbabwe was quite extraordinary. Completely encompassed by the national park we really felt the effects of what it meant to be in the wilderness. As we slowly cruised upstream we were surrounded by hippos and crocodiles. The river was so peaceful and the setting serene but there was something exhilarating knowing what lurked just below the murky waters. The predators every now and again slowly glided towards to the surface to present a mere glimpse of themselves before disappearing again. As the sun began to set and the gin and tonics flowed we noticed a herd of elephants descending in the direction of the bank which was right before us. A whole elephant family was coming to drink and bathe in the river. They splashed around playing carelessly to cool off from the baking African sun. Seeing these graceful giants up close in their own habitat so unexpectedly and witnessing how they interact with each other was somewhat emotional. Especially for me, I have been a huge animal lover for as long as I can remember so this experience I found slightly overwhelming. I can't find the words to describe the emotion that overcome me in that moment but I became fully captivated in observing their behaviour..

"AFRICA'S BEAUTY IS REMARKABLE" The next few days we catapulted ourselves into the heart of Zimbabwe. We did everything from touring the great Victoria Falls to visiting lion and elephant conservations. Our trip to the Fall's (which is one of the seven wonders of the world ) was frightfully spectacular. Nothing can prepare you for how dramatically remarkable the vision of the gushing waterfall truly is. Just to get a better perspective of this wondrous site we had arranged to swim in the ‘Angel pool’ which is on the Zambia side of the falls. The pool is positioned on the edge of the falls which sounds utterly barbaric but it was sheer exhilaration. One of the many highlights of our stay in Zimbabwe was the precious time we got to spend observing and interacting with the animals. The feeling of stepping into their territory and exposing ourselves in such a vulnerable manner also gave us insight into not only how they react to human presence but there was an unexplainable sense of mutual respect. After two nights in Victoria Falls taking in all it had to offer and learning so much about the African culture and wildlife it was now time for the final leg of our journey: a three-night stay in Somalisa camp in Hwange national park. This was the ultimate end to an extraordinary trip. We headed back to Vic Falls airport to board the bush plane to fly into Hwange. I managed to swindle my way into the cockpit to sit next to the pilot… as one does on such an adventure! However instagrammable the pictures were the experience was pretty terrifying. Flying head first into clouds doesn’t sound like such a bid deal, but let's discuss is once you have done it in a tin plane…. Joking aside it was quite the experience!

As we flew over the park the beauty of the vast African planes and savannah became apparent. I had dreamt of going on Safari since I was a little girl so this for me was the ultimate moment, especially as I got to share it with Jean and his father. As we came into landing (a thin dirt strip surrounded by the thick bush!) a dazzle of zebras and ostriches scarpered from the path. This was way beyond anything I could have imagined and we had only just arrived. Our guides met us in typical land cruiser trucks to take us to our camp. We bundled our luggage together and headed into the thick bush. The Thirtyminute drive ended up being slightly extended as we came face to face with the bush locals. Kudus, Impalas and elephants were the first to acknowledge our presence as we made our way through the savanna. This again was totally different to seeing the animals in Victoria Falls, I think it might be because they were just as curious about us as we were about them and this time we were fully exposed and in their domain. We arrived at Somalisa which blew our minds, the staff greeted us with their typical beautifully friendly and welcoming Zimbabwean manner. The people made such a huge impact on me I couldn’t believe how positively flawless their outlook on life was. Their smiles and charm were infectious to the point where spending merely five minutes with them was addictive. The camp was heavenly! It was so perfectly undisputed with its decor and locally sourced materials, but also the amenities and consideration for the environment and wildlife was utterly inspiring. I couldn’t help but acknowledge the profuse sense of gratitude and appreciation for that very moment. In fact, I think I had many of these moments of appreciation and acknowledgement throughout the entire trip. Africa appeared to have an immense effect on me, at every turn and every experience I found myself succumbing to the beauty of how wild and pure the country is.

MilliOnAir

So, our days at Somalisa camp started with a wake-up call at 5.30am, this also wasn’t just a wake-up call, it was also a call to let you know it is now safe to venture out your tent alone! And yes this is necessary! The nights are filled with the sounds of the vibrant bush community. From the distant baritone roar of a lion coalition on a hunt to the baboons screeching warnings from the treetops. The tents are no more than a luxurious tent. So the whole one side is mesh which means you are fully exposed to whatever nature intends (we were assured this mesh was an adequate deterrent for predators!) . The shadows of certain wild neighbours can be seen as they make their way though camp whilst you are safely tucked up in bed, which in itself is mind-blowing. So once it was safe to leave, we made our way to the main camp for breakfast. The food was delicious. In fact when I wasn't day dreaming about our Safari adventure I was dreaming about what would be on the menu for lunch or dinner! The first game drive starts at 6am so we were forever chasing the sunrise and sunset (this is also when the animals all come to life, so the action really starts!). We were appointed a guide at the start of the trip, ours was called Albert. Our trip was made all the more extraordinary merely by Albert's knowledge and wisdom. He had previously served as a park ranger for over twenty years so the skills he had acquired and the tales he told us blew our minds. He taught us to track animals via their footprints and to identify different species by their waste. We learnt how to navigate our way through the stars and how to survive in the wild. Albert's stories of hunting poachers and the tales of dedicating his life to conservation was beyond inspiring. There was no question he couldn’t answer or didn’t have a story about. After experiencing our safari the way we did, it soon became apparent the importance of having such a remarkable guide. I think without Albert we would have still had an incredible time Zimbabwe however, we wouldn’t have felt so connected and engaged in all our encounters. He presented the wildlife to us fully through his own eyes and wisdom which is why the experience became so special. We were in Africa for a total of ten days and in that short time we made sure we maximised every second of it in order to really absorb everything it had to offer. After experiencing every aspect from Cape Town to Somalisa bush life we have wholeheartedly fallen in love with the country. Having travelled far and wide I never expected for one second the power a place can have over a person but Africa exposed me to so much raw emotions that I couldn’t ignore. It has to be by far the most life-changing trip I have ever encountered personally. The magic and purity bewitched me to a point where we are already planning our trip back, but next time we are going to take it one step further and strip back to the bare basics of bush living.

V&A opens retrospective on legendary fashion designer Mary Quant By Fashion Director Marcella Martinelli

The V&A opens the first international retrospective on the iconic fashion designer Dame Mary Quant. The exhibition explores the years between 1955 and 1975, when Quant revolutionised the high street, harnessing the youthful spirit of the sixties and new mass production techniques to create a new look for women. Quant personified the energy and fun of swinging London and was a powerful role model for the working woman. Challenging conventions, she popularised the miniskirt, colourful tights, and tailored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. The miniskirt would go on to become an icon of the time and spark a new creative scene in London and beyond. MilliOnAir

Receiving unprecedented access to Dame Mary Quant’s Archive, as well as drawing on the V&A’s extensive fashion holdings, which include the largest public collection of Quant garments in the world, the show brings together over 120 garments as well as accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs – the majority of which have never been on display before.

In June 2018, we launched a call-out to the public to track down rare Quant garments from wardrobes around the country. Receiving over 1,000 responses, 35 objects from 30 individuals were selected alongside personal stories from the owners and 50 photographs of the women wearing their beloved Quant clothes. These objects and stories have transformed the exhibition narrative, uncovering rare examples such as a very early and unlabelled blouse, a hat sold at Bazaar, and colourful PVC raincoats. Exhibition lender Sheila Hope came forward with her dress made for her 21st birthday from a Butterick dress pattern, describing the piece as “an iconic, simple design which instantly appealed to me, frilled neckline and sleeves with tiny darts to shape and ease the elbow.”

Inspiring young women to rebel against traditional dress worn by their mothers and grandmothers, Quant’s tiny boutique on the King’s Road grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK. Quant’s success soon hit America, where her designs were made for chain stores and mail order companies. Quant quickly became the woman that made fashion less exclusive and more accessible to a new generation. MilliOnAir

Ahead of her time in marketing and promotion, Quant was the embodiment of the label. Her distinctive, photogenic style, playful energy and revolutionary approach made her the ultimate ambassador for the brand. The show explores some of Quant’s most memorable moments from collecting her OBE to the evolution of her rising hemlines. The exhibition looks at her collaborations with manufacturers, diversifying into underwear, hosiery and cosmetics, all made to her designs, and packaged with her distinctive daisy logo. It also explores her own line of dolls, known as Daisy dolls, a rival to Barbie. Jenny Lister, co-curator of Mary Quant at the V&A, said: “Mary Quant transformed the fashion system, overturning the dominance of luxury couture from Paris. She dressed the liberated woman, freed from rules and regulations, and from dressing like their mothers. This long- overdue exhibition shows how Mary Quant’s brand connected with her customers, how she made designer fashion affordable for working women, and how her youthful, revolutionary clothes, inspired by London’s creative scene, made British streetstyle the global influence it remains today.” From small boutique to international label, Quant revolutionised British fashion with energy, flair and rebellion. Mary Quant at the V&A features never before seen designs and provides an unrivalled insight into the career of one of Britain’s most revolutionary and important fashion designers. The exhibition Mary Quant runs from 6 April 2019 – 16 February 2020. Tickets are £12 Twitter: @V_and_A Instagram: @vamuseum Facebook: @VictoriaandalbertMusuem

Stephen Jones Hats and all things nice! Edited by Marcella Martinelli

MilliOnAir

Stephen Jones burst on to the London fashion scene during its explosion of street style in the late seventies. By day, he was a student at St Martins; after dark he was one of that era's uncompromising styleblazers at the legendary Blitz nightclub - always crowned with a striking hat of his own idiosyncratic design.

hats routinely grace the most celebrated magazine covers and enliven window displays of the world's most stylish stores. From runways to race-courses, from pop-promos to royal garden parties, millinery by Stephen Jones adds the exclamation mark to every fashion statement.

By 1980, Jones had opened his first millinery salon in the heart of London's Covent Garden. Those premises soon became a place of pilgrimage and patronage, as everyone from rock stars to royalty, from Boy George to Diana, Princess of Wales, identified Jones as the milliner who would help them make arresting headlines. Jones made millinery seem modern and compelling. In materials that were often radical, and in designs that ranged from refined to whimsical, his exquisitely crafted, quixotic hats encapsulated the fashion mood of the moment. Rei Kawakubo is only one name in the rollcall of fashion designers with whom Jones has collaborated. Since the early 80s Stephen Jones has collaborated with designers from Vivienne Westwood and Claude Montana through to his current work with Thom Browne and Christian Dior, Jones' hats have been an integral component in some of the most memorable runway spectacles of the past quarter century. Today, Jones' retail boutique, design studio and workroom are all located in a charming Georgian townhouse close to the site of his very first millinery salon. In addition to his Model Millinery collection, he designs the widely-distributed Miss Jones and JonesBoy diffusion ranges. In 2009 at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, he curated the hugely popular exhibition 'Hats, an Anthology by Stephen Jones', breaking attendance records around the world. In addition his hats are also collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris. Now, as ever, at the forefront of fashion, his beguiling MilliOnAir

Spring trends, refresh your wardrobe and try new things. Written by Alison J Lowe MBE

S

Spring is a wonderful time of year when the temperature starts to rise, the days start to get longer, the birds are back singing in the trees and the sun seems to shine more. I love this time of year as it feels like a time of reawakening. It is time to spring clean your home, check out the new spring trends, refresh your wardrobe and try new things.

Spring always makes me want to throw everything away and start afresh, but this approach is neither economically viable nor environmentally friendly. Therefore, instead I have been looking for a few new things that will freshen up my life and bring me joy (well I am still trying the Marie Kondo method!). I am trying hard to become a more conscious shopper and change my impulsive buying habits. I am taking more time to make decisions on purchases to ensure that I am buying things that I will treasure for years. This month’s ‘Uncovered’ column shares some of the new businesses and products I have discovered. In the process, I had some great experiences, met some amazingly talented people and found some great products that would bring me joy – but I will have to scrimp and save for some of them. I hope you will find joy in some of these too!

My first place for spring inspiration was, and always is, the Net-A-Porter site. I spend hours on the site lusting over the latest fashion trends, the featured edits and the delectable treats. The ‘Spring Edit’ showed that it was time to throw off the black, the chunky jumpers and comfortable leisurewear and step into the new seasons bright hues, kitten heels, tailored suits, statement jackets and floaty dresses. The site hosts collections from the best designers from around the world, with page after page of the most covetable pieces. More importantly for me is the wealth of information on the site, which shows me the latest trends, how to style looks, what to wear for different events and gives me general inspiration. I currently have lots of goodies sitting in my shopping cart, including the super new Chloe kids wear, a pair of Ganni embroidered western style boots and an Alexander McQueen crocheted floral print maxi dress. I am having to exercise great control to stop myself from automatically hitting the buy button – but can feel my will power weakening! One item that is sold through Net-a-Porter that I have been lucky enough to acquire, is the new BEGLOW Tia, an all-in-one Sonic Skin Care System. I was introduced to the system when I was looking for products that help reduce single use plastics. Part of my new year’s resolution to do my bit for the environment was to reduce the ridiculous amount of single use products, plastics and packaging I have in my home, so I wanted to find out more about BeGlow. The product is an ideal replacement for face wipes, which frighteningly can take between 100-500 years to decompose. Though it may look like other electronic cleansers on the market, this gorgeous gadget is hiding a secret that helps you be kinder to the environment and to your skin. BeGlow is an all-in-one sonic skin care system designed with a dual pulse to deep-cleanse, lift and tone to leave you with your healthiest and best-looking skin yet.

MilliOnAir

All BeGlow products have Smart SkinSense™ Pulsation Technology using gentle, yet powerful pulsations, removing impurities and makeup more effectively than cleansing with hands. TIA also comes with an anti-ageing titanium applicator to cool and calm the skin, improve circulation and improve product absorption. BeGlow TIA also has a third function: using the ergonomically shaped device on the reverse, you can place and hold the device against the muscles in the face for toning and lifting. Since getting the BeGlow I actually look forward to removing my makeup at the end of the day. With my Spring wardrobe sorted and my daily skin care routine improved, it was time to get a seasonal refresh of my hair style and colour with help from the gorgeous celebrity hairstylist Edward Taylor Hair. Visiting Edward at his new hair and beauty salon, led me to uncovering the gorgeous village of Stock. I hadn’t come across this little Essex village before, but it seems that I am late to the party, as it is one of the most up and coming, desirable places to live. As Edward showed me round his gorgeous new salon he shared his insider knowledge of the area. Stock is an absolute gem, a traditional village with four excellent pubs, a cricket pitch, a spa hotel, a golf course and a bijous selection of boutique shops. The house prices in the village are escalating as the nouveau riche escape to this sheltered enclave that is in easy reach of London. The village has a wide selection of properties from timber framed cottages to newly built mansions and prices are predominantly within the £million and above range.

With everything you need at hand to live a luxury lifestyle, it is easy to see why this village is becoming so popular and I can totally understand why Edward has opened his salon in this pretty village. It is the perfect place to entice his celebrity clientele to, as well as providing an exemplary, luxury hair and beauty experience to his quickly growing local customer base. I met Edward through his work on shows at London and Paris fashion weeks, and he continues to work with a group of high flying business leaders and celebrities. Owning his own salon was a long-term dream and within a short time of opening, he won the Essex Salon People’s Choice award. He has now expanded the business with a team of highly qualified specialists, which also includes the new Be Beautiful beauty salon and I will be popping back soon to try their new ‘Million Dollar Facials’ – that’s the result not the fee! Next door to Edward Taylor is another award-winning business, Stock Florist, a beautiful flower shop selling the finest hand cut flowers in Essex, which won the British Wedding Florist of the Year 2018. Owner Sam Raindle has always been passionate about flowers, so when the opportunity came along in 2014 to transform an empty shop into a beautiful flower shop she went for it! Sam explains that her and her husband “discovered the empty shop whilst walking through the village and he mentioned how beautiful it would look like a flower shop. He was right, if you could draw a perfect location for a flower shop; Stock would be what you sketched out. The narrow streets, the old houses full of character, the locals who always stop to say good morning. I really couldn’t have pictured it better in my mind. Stock is the wedding capital of Essex. There are four very special and very different wedding venues close by. People travel far and wide to come here, though, because there’s something so romantic about Stock”.

MilliOnAir

I couldn’t agree more, there is something very romantic about Stock and I can totally see why, when individuals and businesses discover the village, they want to stay and build their businesses and lives there. I’m very tempted myself. So, if you are ever passing through the green belt of Essex, pop by and discover Stock for yourself, I can highly recommend the florist, the hair salon and The Hoop, a great bar with many traditional features and original timber framework, which serves great food and drink. So maybe stay a while, just don’t push those house prices up too much! After visiting Stock, I came home a little disappointed with my current abode so decided to treat myself to something new for my home. I am currently browsing the catalogue of interior design company Beaumont and Fletcher, who create the most divine couture collections of fabric, passementerie and cushions. Every piece is truly beautiful and the extraordinary fabrics are hand embroidered using fine coloured silks with gold and silver threads. Some pieces are embellished with pearls and crystals, others inlaid with semi-precious stones, but each is a work of art. Every Beaumont & Fletcher sofa, chair and footstool is created by skilled craftsmen, in a dedicated workshop in Kent. Using the finest materials and traditional methods, each piece epitomises the individualistic style and uncompromising quality for which the company is renowned. I want everything, but need to take my time to choose that one special piece …. so, I may be here a while.

ELLIE VANDOORNE Edited by Marcella Martinelli

Ellie Vandoorne is an artist with an emphasis on illustration and graphic design. Working in a number of mediums, she draws most of her inspiration from nature and literature making her work intriguingly refreshing and yet familiar. Vandoorne grew up in France and the UK before moving to Sydney to study graphic design and illustration. In 2012 she moved back to Europe and continued work as a graphic designer and illustrator. 2015 saw Vandoorne hold her first solo exhibition which was a sell out with works like Flower Girl catching the eye of fashion designer Matthew Williamson which led to them collaborating on the cover of his book ‘Matthew Williamson: Fashion, Print and Colouring Book’ in 2016.

Since then, Ellie Vandoorne has been shortlisted for numerous awards and exhibits regularly within the London art scene. Vandoorne is probably best known for her eyecatching female portraits. These bright coloured mixed media collages feature women in profile with headdresses made of flowers, butterflies, birds, and are a popular choice amongst interior designers. Her works have become increasingly sought after by private and corporate collectors alike.

Checking out Huawei's P30 Pro, the jaw-dropping By Executive Business Editor Elise Quevedo smartphone of the year

What can I say, I have been playing with the Huawei P30 Pro for just over a month now and I'm in heaven! Thank you to Huawei Spain for the invite to the Paris launch, what a blast we had! Last year's Huawei's P20 Series sold over 16 million units globally, thanks to the strong innovation of the camera that enabled users to take perfect shots. With the P30 series, Huawei has taken its product innovation a step further.

Walter Ji, President of Huawei Western Europe at CBG said

" We have completely redesigned the camera in the Huawei P30 Pro to feature an all new Leica Quad Camera that is an industry world-first. This ground breaking design doesn't just leave other smartphone cameras behind, it rivals most professional camera setups, day or night. We have done this by adapting the color filter, changing greens to yellows, and allowing the camera to capture more light. The lenses have also been redesigned, from an Ultra Wide-Angle lens to take in the big picture to brand new sensors and wider apertures that raise the standard of low light photography. Finally, the zoom lens has been recreated as a periscope to provide outstanding detail, even from a distance" So what makes the Huawei P30 Pro Special? When it comes to photography it delivers up to four times the light sensitivity of many professional DSLR cameras, resulting in jaw-dropping images never seen before from a smartphone. The zoom is what is having the world go crazy! Want to get up close? Super Macro Mode means crystal clear photography down to 2.5 cm, so you can shoot the grains of pollen on a flower or the wing of an insect in sharp focus. The Periscope Zoom Lens offers 5x Optical, 10X Hybrid and 50x Digital. This is allowing people to capture photos that you just cannot get with any other smartphone. The most useful "zoom mode is the 5x option. When sharing some photos on my FB, Leica photographer Alex Lambrechts said "Keep it in Photo/Auto mode, the quality of the Master AI is so improved. This device is a real gamechanger, the 5x optical and enhanced AI make this a serious piece of kit. The photos are good enough for printing for exhibition and magazine. The 5X gives us 135mm equivalent focal length. This device has the biggest improvements in terms of photography experience from any previous model to date" Night mode is also beyond this world. Shooting in low light has never been more satisfying, and only when you try it you will understand why it is a game changer. Shooting in the dark has become one of my favorite things to do. And how can I not mention the front-facing camera for those selfie lovers! The Huawei P30 Pro has a whooping 32megapixel selfie camera. MilliOnAir

And how can I not mention the front-facing camera for those selfie lovers! The Huawei P30 Pro has a whooping 32megapixel selfie camera. The Huawei P30 Pro doesn't just revolutionize smartphone photography, it's also set up so you can create cutting edge videos that stand out from the crowd. Video stabilization has been upgraded using Huawei AIS + OIS. Style-wise, this is one of the most stylish models yet, very fashion forward. Each bold and iconic color gradient is inspired by nature. From the stark beauty of Breathing Crystal to Aurora and Amber Sunrise. The all-new dual curved design, with a curved OLED on the front, and curved glass back creates a thin, sleek and easy to hold the device. The notch has been reduced too Let's not forget about the power! AI power saving and more efficient hardware means that the Huawei P30 Pro can stay powered for two days without needing a charge. The heart of the smartphone is Huawei's Kirin 980 chipset, one of the highest performance processors on the market with some of the lowest power consumptions. With the Huawei 40W SuperCharge, you can top up your battery from 0 to 70 percent in just 30 minutes. To get the full specs visit https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/phones/p30-pro/ It's hard to imagine where can a smartphone go from here, but I know many people are already looking forward to the next series to see how much more magic can be delivered! With the Huawei P30 Series, it's time to rethink what's possible

MilliOnAir | Conversations with Elise Quevedo

Award winning journalist Pipo Serrano By Executive Business Editor Elise Quevedo

How many times have you heard me say, it's all about the stories. Think about it, from a young age we are programmed to like them. From the way we are read fairytales as babies, to the first movies we watch, to the stories we listen to from our parents and friends. The right stories get us hooked, and as we grow up, who tell stories to the world each day? Journalists! So I could not think of anyone better to interview this month than award winning journalist Spanish born Pipo Serrano. There is one thing that makes Pipo stand out from the moment you meet him, and that is undoubtedly his incredible voice. I like to call it the million dollar voice! Consider him the Spanish version of James Earl Jones or James Stewart For those who are not familiar with Pipo Serrano, he is a Spanish journalist (Radio, Television and Digital Journalism), who has directed strategies and digital transformations in large newsrooms and media, incorporating in them new narratives and digital coverage, in addition to Mobile Journalism (MoJo), of which he is one of the pioneers in Spain. For all this, he was recognized by the "European Digital Mindset Awards 2018" with the "Best Journalistic Work on Digital Transformation" award. Dynamics and experience that he has also applied in projects with numerous companies from other areas. After many years directing and sub directing numerous radio and television spaces, in recent times, his media presence is linked to his extensive knowledge of the digital universe. This has led him to participate as a speaker in various conferences related to digital issues, in addition to presenting and moderating recognized sessions at the MWC (mWeek, DFS, Congress Talks, BDT, mLunch), MojoCon, and Smart City World Expo to name a few. Author of 2 books on digital transformation and MoJo, at an academic level, he is a professor of "Digital Journalism" in the "Master of Journalism Bcn_Ny" of the University of Barcelona and the Columbia School of Journalism. In addition, he is an associate professor at the University of New Haven, for whom he teaches digital journalism to North American students in Barcelona. Pipo Serrano has been a member of the Governing Board of the Journalists Association of Catalonia since March 2018.

P

ipo, what made you get into journalism?

To be honest I was initially planning to become a doctor. I was on my final years of study and focused on become a doctor when one day, it was a couple of years before going to University,I was studying with some friends and we went for lunch. When finishing lunch, we went to a candy store to get some sweets and the lady from the store told me, “you’ve got an amazing voice, are you planning on becoming a journalist? And I said," No, I will be a doctor!" She said, "it’s a pity, because you would amazing in radio or TV shows, so you should rethink that" and I laughed... Something in myself kept thinking about that and a few months later I said, “I want to become a journalist” Also, when I was about 14 years old, I started to do a local radio show and since I put myself in front of a mike,I realised I wanted to do that. I had two radio shows connected to music. One was called “Melancholics Anonymous”and the second “The 3 Marias” That is a big jump, from doctor to journalist! What has journalism shown you in life? Journalism has taught me most of the things I do.What I have learned, is that as work it's amazing. It's about telling to the people what happens to them. I observe everything very carefully.I try to have empathy with everyone. To me, it means to try to understand every point of view. To try not to judge anything from a single point of view. You need to learn to be unbiased. None of us know enough to judge others in life.

I remember when I started in radio initially. We already had internet but we tried to dive into stories. Everybody had to make lots of phone calls, connect with resources, there was a lot of action. We all felt like we had to go outside and find stories. Now, with the google generations and in the newsrooms, journalists have become a bit passive. I’m not saying all of them of course, but many journalists have become too comfortable by going online and reading what others have done before. So for many years many outlets where not doing actual journalism, they were just repeating what others were saying or doing and so on. In a way, thanks to social media and all the new platforms for those that understand the real thing, when they realised what was happening, they went back to real journalism again and it was amazing once again. We spent some years in a bit of a dark place, because there was a bit of confusion. They were not sure where the business model was heading. The big bosses did not understand the money spent for someone to spend several days on a story. With the years,in some companies everything has gone back to what it all was a the begining. Unfortunately, for some others, there is still a lot of confusion... You have also done TV work ...What is the main difference between TV and radio journalism? There is a huge difference. The main difference is that TV is like a hard place. It has magnets because of the colors and the lights. It’s great to have someone there telling you things, but many times people don’t pay attention. The real difference, on radio, you only have one shot, one way to connect with the people. Your voice, your stories, and how you say it.Whereas on TV you are focusing more on the headlines, you have to be more of a showman….

Also, journalism has taught me that it can be dissapointing. Because sometimes is too close to politics and high power and they are not always interested in telling the real stories You don’t have to go that deep into the topics.TV has a great part, because you have lots of ways to connect with people, (or "what's the real truth/reality behind every story). but radio has more magic. I think it creates a much deeper I love that attitude, not judging anything from a single point connection. You talk to the people. Those connections are of view. How has journalism changed over the last couple like a book or a film. When you read a book, you can imagine lots of things. of decades?

MilliOnAir

You talk to the people. Those connections are like a book or a film. When you read a book, you can imagine lots of things. You are 100% with all your senses there, listening and imagining everything, whereas when you watch a film, they give you all the work done. If you had to start over in your journalism career, would you do anything differently with the knowledge you have now? That is a hard question! I guess I would say yes and no.Yes because I am very happy where I am right now, with who I am. I would not change anything because thanks to many of the mistakes I have done, my life has been turning over the last 20 years on different paths which have made me very happy and very fortunate. If I answered this from the point of what I wanted when I was 18, then maybe by now I should be presenting my own show, maybe a morning radio or TV show. I imagine myself as a main anchor doing good radio shows. But if I analyse it from that point of view and I ask myself why I’m not there?. The answer is quite simple. There are two factors here. One, since I was 25,I have been the deputy director of many shows with the top anchorsTV and radio. And in a way, that makes you disappear, because the focus is on them, you dedicate your effort to make them shine. You are on the shadows. Everybody knows you, but you don’t exist, if that makes sense. So , if I didn’t give so much effort to those people, and I would focus that time and energy on me, then I would probably be there. Two, many times , people told me, especially politicians, none of us knew what side you are in when it comes to political topics. They say, "if you are not with us, you must be with them". In Spain, it is very political oriented. So if you don’t clarify who are you with, you are not going to have your own show. My response has always been “I am a journalist, I don’t have to tell you whom I vote”and I am never going to change that. Unfortunately in Spain, there has been a lot of interest when having a guy at the top ( and I’m not saying all journalists are there because of political reasons,of course not). So going back to the question,I would not change anything, because I am happy where I am at. It is very enriching. Maybe if I had a second life I would try to do it the other way! You are also a professor, what do you enjoy the most from that part of your life?

What I really enjoy the most is that I feel like it takes a lot of time to learn things to succeed in life and what I always try to do, is to share everything! All of my tricks, all my knowledge that maybe took me ten or fifteen years to learn, with my students, because I feel like they can have the opportunity to grow up faster, to learn all those things, but you may not need all that time. I can help them shorten that part, so they can focus on other things. I try to explain to them every single thing. If you are succeeding at something in life, share everything! The reason why I do that is because it’s generous and selfish, generous because people deserve to know so they can improve and bring better stories, and selfish because if I share all my tricks, then In a way I reinvent myself and keep on discovering new tricks so I have more to offer. That keeps pushing me all the time. I always tell my students, I am sharing everything I have learned in 20 years, take it! I love to share but I also love to observe them, understand what they love about life. I love the feedback I get. Some of the American students when they go back home they send me messages saying“ you changed my life”, and that is the reward for all my sharing. My life makes sense when someone says that to me.

Thanks Pipo, that was very insightful, I wish more people what I love the most. Learning from people. thought that way and shared more of their knowledge. A great ethos to go by. What’s your best advice for people And if I had to focus on other moments, one of the ones I who want to excel in journalism? remember more inspiring ones, was being the first time I managed the whole digital transformation of a newsroom I would say, first you need passion. You need to feel like with 50 people. Trying to go against the natural there aren’t enough hours on the day to do what you love, journalistic ways, teaching them that we had to reset our to do research, to write… It’s about passion and patience. mindsets, our goals , to be able to convince my boss ( who This is not like a movie where in two hours you start by is a very well known anchor in Spain and a very openbeing nobody and by the end you are the boss of the minded person), that even though we were sharing company. You need a lot of time, patience and dedication something for free, that afterwards they would come to to succeed. our TV show and radio show. To be able to change a whole newsroom, directing a new way of telling stories, Focus on what you love. Some people believe that to introducing MoJo. That was very exciting and it probably become a good top journalist, you need to become a helped me to be where I am today. political journalist. But why? What do you love, what do you like to talk about? Technology? Fashion? Food? Stories can be anything. Focus on the area you want to excel then read about them, learn about them, write about them and afterwards share it. If you are passionate about a topic, I always recommend my students to write a blog. If you write every single day, a post about something you discover on the topic you are passionate about, you are going to become in a very short time, much better than any journalists that are asked to write about that, because is something that has to happen in the newsroom. This is like a sport, if you run every single day, in a month you will become a much better runner, if you cook every single day, in a month, you will become a much better cook, if you do everything every single day, you will become better. So do that with passion. What would you say have been some of your most memorable moments in your journalistic career so far? Probably I would remember the most recent ones, but the first time I was able to speak through a mike in that local radio in some village, that was a very special moment. Apart from that, when having some shows in radio for the whole country and being able to spread the word on lots of topics was amazing. Every single interview I have performed, weere amazing, because interviewing people is

Like myself, you understand both the pre and after social media eras. How has that impacted the way you do business? What are the positives of technology and social media in your line of work? Before Social Media, we were only talking to one channels and what we learned with digital, is that first we were becoming global and that is key. It doesn’t Matter if you are talking from your office, from your newsroom, from Catalunya or Spain, or from wherever. You become a new media outlet. You can reach huge communities because of that Many people were trying to adapt the traditional languages, say for example radio, then TV to digital. What has changed the most is that this is not about adapting, this is another channel. It is digital. It is not radio and digital . It is a huge channel that accepts every way of expressing yourself. It used to be written in the old days, it could be radio for voice, it can be image as its on TV. You adapt every story. So some stories deserve to be written, some deserve to be on audio, some deserve video, and some deserve all. You can just adapt to your needs. It’s great. On the other side, and going back to the beginning, the fact that this take us to a global audience, every single person and brand , realises that this is a new media. As Tom Foremski said in 2005 in a conference for Cisco in America, every company is now a media company…. Everyone is now a media company. We can see people in their room with basic equipment reaching audiences all over the world. Whereas some other guys spend millions to create a TV show with a team of 50 people and have less audience. Based on my last question, let's talk about MoJo, since you are a pioneer in Spain. Can you explain to us what is MoJo for those who don't understand it?

MoJo stands for Mobile Journalism. What this new way of telling stories changed is that the journalists or the citizen journalists or the person can be autonomous to tell a story. It doesn’t matter where you are, because you have your tool on your pocket 24/7. It’s very easy to capture any story and share it with everyone. It gives you many benefits. It lets you tell stories in a more personal way. I mean, that is more touchy and close to the main characters to the story. Let me give you an example. When you are a journalist and you are doing something on the street and you have a cameraman and you have all the traditional equipment, sometimes, you ask someone a question, they reply in an amazing way. When they see the red light, when you tell them you are about to record it, they become very shy, they control a lot more what they say. The fact is that we have gotten a lot more used to having someone recording us with a phone. We do it at parties, we take selfies, etc… so when we say to someone we are going to record this, and we take our phone out and record it that way, people are a lot more natural. And they share more about the story. There is also another big advantage. Imagine you go to a demonstration, you can be right in the middle of it with your phone and the equipment you need to record it, whereas with a camera crew that can be impossible sometimes. What is important here is not the MO (the mobile), is the JO, the Journalism, the story. Of course there is a negative sometimes, because as we know a cellphone does not have the same quality as the bigger cameras, but we can find ways around it, as we can attach lights to the cellphones, mics, gimbals etc so we can

Let's move onto Digital Transformation. You have helped many companies thrive, especially around large newsrooms and media. What does Digital Transformation mean to you? Digital Transformation is trying to share with other companies and big bosses the need and understanding that we are now Digital. They have to realise that whatever they do has an exposure. DT is taking advantage of all the technologies. I mean, how do you take advantage not just from social platforms, but also big data, algorithms, etc. The thing here again , is that I realise that when you are working on a new Digital transformation for a new company, what you can see is that they have challenges in their analog side.

a different way and you can be out of the game if you don’t adapt. I remember some students of mine once told me, “we don’t go to a restaurant or to a hotel in Europe if we don’t see a website or Facebook page or Instagram or some comments in Yelp/Trip Advisor”. So if you take that as an example, depending what company you are on, if you don’t offer that to the digital era or consumers, you are potentially out of the game. You are also the Head of Digital at Broadcaster and in the morning show of Cadena Ser Catalunya. What do you enjoy the most from working with those teams?

They are very different duties on both of them. On Broadcaster we have two lines of business. One is more focused on media, and the other is focused on companies, Sometimes companies forget what their focus is, they need helping them become their own media. And what I love to do is to tailor, to become an artisan of craftsmanship on to re connect with their audience. Digital and Social we their stories. I love to listen to them, to understand what should compare them to a speaker. You need to turn the they do and to create a new strategy, to design a strategy speaker on. So we create something for them where they can express themselves. your original core message is not defined, then you will have more trouble, because you are telling people you What is amazing, in radio for example, is how to find new have a problem. ways to explain stories, try to avoid the same routine, because it can bore people and it can kill the business. Everything flows if you can direct it example. They have to understand that while they keep well. It is like directing an orchestra. I feel very responsible on doing things like in the old days, they need to rethink when I do that, because I have 5-6 people who are the new. As consumers, we like to do things in a different way, because we have gotten used to the new innovation, dependant on me giving them direction. My aim, is that for example, people are going to consume your product in they do the best when they talk about their topic.

Not only are you an accomplished journalist and consultant, you have also written a couple of books, something I am always telling people to do, to write a book to inspire the generations to come, they are a legacy after we are gone. So, which of the books written so far, is the most meaningful to you, and are there any more books coming up soon? The most meaningful one is the one about Digital Transformation in the newsroom and the inclusion of Mojo. I tried to shared as much as possible. It was like writing a diary of how everything worked after it happened. I tried to give thank you to everyone who was involved. I’m sure there will be one or two more books in the future but not as yet as it takes a lot of time and dedication. So instead of a book, what I will be doing next is a podcast as I have a lot to share and I believe is about time I did that. That is great! I will for sure lookout for that podcast. So, what’s next for Pipo? I will keep on sharing Digital Transformation news in different formats, to keep on learning and discovering about people, to become more relevant in digital, in every single sector that is connected to digital. I will also be speaking soon, 8th of May, it will be about Fake News and it's for the "Open Society Foundation" (from George Soros)!

It’s hard to just say one or two things, because family and friends inspire me all the time too Thanks! Much appreciated! and I do too love to observe people, we can learn a lot by doing that. Now, what does Pipo enjoy doing on his spare time? I love to do everything that I do on my professional time! because I love what I do… I love to do trial, which is motorcycling in the mountain, I love to go sailing, I like to hike and to spend time with my motorcycle. Going away from the city to think and relax. And I love watching series! With all the experience and wisdom you have gathered so far in life, what advice would you give to your younger self? These questions are harder than I thought! I would say, enjoy every single moment of life, because life is too short and goes too fast. Stop procrastinating and complaining about life. Be positive, enjoy your friends and have great relationships with your people. Do what you love, that is the most important, no matter what it is

I will also be hosting at The Smart City World Expo later in the year. I will be at MojoFest in Ireland and the Global Editors Network Summit in Athens to name a few. What or who inspires you in life? That is a difficult one! It’s hard to say!. Everything inspires me in life. People like you inspire me, of course, people with your attitude, people with your way at looking at life inspire me. Entrepreneurs, young people who are changing the world. It inspires me a lot the observation of people. I love to observe people and see the way they interact. I can be at a cafe, just looking at how people interact. Nature inspires me, the sea, the mountains, reading… people and companies who change the world. I am currently reading a book from the president of Microsoft, Satya Nadella called Hit Refresh which is very inspiring. MilliOnAir

OMG, this is probably the best answer anyone has ever giving me! I am adding this to the list of topics to talk to next time I see you, haha. What country would you like to visit you have not been to as yet? I would like to explore Africa more as my dad loves Africa. I have been to many countries there, but I would like to get deep in Africa a lot more. I would also like to go to Japan and China, but Africa is my passion And finally, what is the one item you cannot live without? I would say my pen! Because inspiration comes at anytime and I love to write things down. Thank you so much Pipo! What an honor talking to you. And there you have it folks, an insight into the world of award winning journalist Pipo Serrano. Stay tuned, as this will not be the last time I talk to Pipo. With so many topics to discuss, I am sure I will be doing a follow up very soon to talk more in depth about technological topics such as Digital Transformation, Smart Cities, Tech For Good and MoJo amongst many others. If you want to stay connected with Pipo follow him on Twitter or Linked In Tell us something not many people know about you? https://twitter.com/piposerrano This can sound a bit of a serial killer, but I love knives! I love to sharpen them in the old traditional way, with a big stone. I have a glass of wine, put on some classical music and sharpen all my knives. When you cook and you use a proper sharpened knife it makes the whole difference in the world. I won’t share everything right now or I could talk for hours about sharpened knives. But I would like to say that I am a pacifist, I don’t kill anyone! Haha, not even a mosquito!
