A CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE! For the first time in Millersville University history, Athletics is one of three priorities under the University fundraising campaign, “Imagine the Possible.” As part of the campaign, our goal is to raise $6 million for scholarships and program support for athletics. This is an exciting endeavor, and it establishes a firm commitment to the future success of Millersville Athletics.

With your generosity, the Black & Gold Club set numerous fundraising records in 2017-18.

Together, we:

Set a new fundraising record for Millersville Athletics for the third consecutive year with a total of $1.99 million raised—an increase of more than $400,000.

Increased our membership in the Black & Gold Club and saw the creation of 10 endowed athletic funds and 15 named annual scholarship awards.

Allocated over $1 million in athletics scholarships across all sports for 2018-19.

I firmly believe this is just the beginning of our department’s success.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Millersville women’s basketball team achieved its best conference tournament finish since the 2004-05 season. The Marauders reached the championship game after defeating nationally-ranked IUP in triple overtime, finishing as PSAC Runners-up.

Alayah Hall reached a career milestone of 1,000 career points during the season. Hall was also named PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year and All-PSAC East First Team.

BASEBALL – With PSAC East Pitcher of the Year Eli Nabholz and All-PSAC East Second Team selection Cordell Shannon leading the way, Millersville finished as the PSAC Tournament runner-up, reaching the championship game for the fourth time in five years.

OUR ATHLETES, SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY To be a Marauder is to serve. Our student-athletes are integral members of the community all while balancing life in the classroom and in competition. During the 2017-18 academic year, Millersville student-athletes totaled 2,082 hours of community service.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), comprising representatives from each of the 19 teams, raised a record amount of $6,533 for Make-A-Wish, earning the right to host a wish reveal.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams were both recipients of the ITA Atlantic Region Community Service Award for efforts off the court.

When Coghlan was in eighth grade, he and his friends were preparing for a ski trip. Just before the trip, he and his parents noticed something was not right. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and battled the disease for two years. Coghlan is now in his first year of remission. Millersville granted his wish, sending him on a ski trip to Vail, Colorado.

SAAC raised money through fundraising and collections at various sporting events for Make-A-Wish® in 2017, giving them the opportunity to reveal Coghlan’s wish. This is the third year in a row SAAC hosted a reveal.

A YEAR OF COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE  M en’s BASKETBALL – In the second

season under the direction of Casey Stitzel, the Marauders returned to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2015. The season included an upset of nationally-ranked Shippensburg for the second season in a row. Junior Marcus Adkison was named All-PSAC East Second Team—the first Marauder junior to be named all-conference since 2007.

Adkison averaged 18.4 points per game, led the league in steals and set the Millersville single-season record for free throw percentage.

 INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD – Along

with Sunflower Greene winning two events at the PSAC Championships, Courtney Ingold placed third in the 60and 200-meter dashes, and Clara Forney placed third in the 400-meter dash.

 O UTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD – The

Millersville 4x400-meter relay team set a school record by more than three seconds in the final race of the PSAC Outdoor Championships, clinching a runner-up finish—the best by the program since 1996. In addition to Sunflower Greene’s wins in the shot put and hammer, Amanda Myers (javelin and hammer) and Arianna Camel (100-meter hurdles and heptathlon) all produced top-three, All-PSAC finishes.

 M en’s GOLF – Connor Sheehan capped

his senior season by placing third at the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional—the second top-three finish of his career. As a team, Millersville reached the super regional tournament for a record sixth consecutive season. The team also won three tournament titles in 2017-18.  Women’s GOLF – Danielle Greene was named All-PSAC Second Team for the third consecutive season. She helped the Marauders win two tournament titles and placed fourth at the PSAC Championship.

Greene placed third at the PSAC Championship, finishing in the top-six for the third year in a row.

 FOOTBALL – J.C. Morgan, previously the

offensive coordinator at Shippensburg, was named Millersville’s new head coach on April 30. During the 2017 season, the Marauders were led by linebacker Sean Dugan, who was named All-PSAC East and All-Super Region 1 First Team. Kevin Wiggins, who finished his career ranked third all-time in career catches, yards and touchdowns, was also named All-PSAC East First Team. Defensive end Tommy Halloway and linebacker Cameron Boykin were the first Millersville underclassmen named AllPSAC East since 2007.

 W omen’s CROSS COUNTRY – The

Marauders placed 17th at the PSAC Championships and 20th at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. After missing the first two meets of the season, freshman Victoria Ranck was the team’s top finisher in each of the last three meets.

 F IELD HOCKEY – A 10-game winning

streak helped the Marauders to a 15-6 season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Marauders won a shootout against Saint Anselm in the NCAA Quarterfinals, advancing to the NCAA Semifinals in Louisville, Ky., before falling to LIU Post. Courtney Weaver, Meredith Fagan, Erica Tarsi and Aliza Mizak were all named All-America.

 M en’s SOCCER – Millersville posted

a 13-5-1 record and was ranked as high as No. 9 in Division II during the season. The team reached the PSAC Semifinals for the ninth time in 10 years. Juniors Chase Flickinger and Kyle Finsterbush and freshman Nathan Maynard were named AllPSAC. Finsterbush, Flickinger and Marcus Frangakis all earned All-Atlantic Region recognition.

 W omen’s SOCCER – With just two

seniors on the roster, Millersville narrowly missed the postseason, going 5-3-1 at home. Kay Liebl and Paige Mancini were both named All-PSAC and Liebl was

also named D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team.  S OFTBALL – Led by a lineup that

set the Millersville single-season record for home runs, the softball team reached the PSAC Tournament for the second time in three years under Coach Jen Probst. Shortstop Rebecca Blatt was named All-PSAC East First Team, and freshman Faith Willenbrock, who hit a single-season record 14 home runs and led the PSAC in slugging percentage, was named All-Atlantic Region by two organizations.

 Women’s SWIMMING – Millersville

totaled 300.5 points and placed 10th at the PSAC Championships.

Emily Fusco set school records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, swimming a NCAA provisional time in the 200.

 Men’s TENNIS – Second-year head

coach Matt Helsel continued to rebuild the program, adding a pair of newcomers in Ben Fellman and Peter Landis, who combined for 18 singles wins.

 W omen’s TENNIS – Katina Jones won

11 matches and went 4-1 in PSAC action, earning All-PSAC First Team honors for the second season in a row. Megan Rovenolt, was named to the second team, and the duo, which went 3-2 in PSAC doubles action, was named All-PSAC East Second Team.

 Women’s VOLLEYBALL– Millersville

went 18-10 for its best winning percentage since 1998, just missing the PSAC Tournament by one match. Erin Harman, just the third player in program history to graduate with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, was named All-PSAC Second Team. Freshman Lindsey Blevins ranked fourth in the PSAC in kills.

 WRESTLING – First-year head

coach Kerry Regner made an immediate impact. Shane Ruhnke became Millersville wrestling’s first All-American since 1991 after placing sixth at the NCAA Division II Championships. Millersville earned its best-ever finish at the NCAA Super Region 1 Championships and its best PSAC Championships in six years.

 Women’s LACROSSE – Seniors

Sabrina Fusco, Kristen Butzner and Callie Kavanaugh along with junior Natalie Sukanick and sophomore Jasa Lorah were all named All-PSAC. Fusco, a four-time All-PSAC selection, broke the all-time Millersville goals and points records, totaling 223 goals and 277 points in her career.

Fusco also broke the single-season goals record with 71. Butzner led the PSAC and set a single-season Millersville record with 95 points while also ranking second in the league and first all-time at Millersville with 67 assists.

With more than 250 alumni, staff, student-athletes and friends of the athletic department in attendance, the second annual Dining with Champions Dinner and Silent Auction raised nearly $20,000 for athletic scholarships and operations.

The keynote speaker was Millersville University Athletics Hall of Fame member Scott Martin ’02, who is now a Pennsylvania State Senator.

Millersville’s best and brightest student-athletes were recognized during the event. Track and field’s Amanda Myers and Sean Dugan were announced as Career Achievement Award winners. Volleyball and track and field athlete Erin Harman was presented with the Scholar-Athlete Award. Football’s Mike Stock won the Community Service Award for his work with Camp PALS, an organization that creates immersive experiences for individuals with Down syndrome.

Longtime football team volunteer Scott Francis was the recipient of the Core Values Award, which is presented annually to the individual who exemplifies the core values of the Millersville University Athletic Department through their everyday actions.

Anttonen Athletics Lobby

Following extensive renovations to the Pucillo Gymnasium lobby, the area was renamed the Anttonen Athletics Lobby in honor of Dr. Ralph (Doc) and Mrs. Judith Anttonen at a dedication ceremony prior to the Nov. 15 men’s basketball game against Wilmington.

The dedication serves to recognize the philanthropic support and years of volunteering, advocating, mentoring, teaching, announcing and scorekeeping for Millersville basketball and volleyball. The Anttonens have given many significant gifts over their lifetime as well as a recent additional multi-year commitment to Millersville Athletics.

In addition to new flooring, wall tile, doors and ceiling tile, the lobby renovations include a focus on Millersville University’s strong athletic tradition. Graphics of all-time great Millersville student-athletes and teams adorn the walls. A new All-America wall was installed, and the official location of the Millersville University Athletics Hall of Fame was moved to the lobby.

“Heading into this project, we wanted to find a way to showcase the rich history and tradition of Marauder Athletics,” said director of athletics Miles Gallagher. “The finished product accomplishes just that and it’s something everyone connected to Marauder Athletics can be proud of. I’m even more excited that the lobby was named after the Anttonens. They have been unbelievable supporters on so many levels for Millersville Athletics. This naming reaffirms their commitment to providing scholarships to our student-athletes and it establishes a legacy in their name that will be forever cemented in our history.”
