A CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE! Last year in my first letter to the Black & Gold Club, I challenged our supporters to unite as ONE Marauder Family in order for Millersville Athletics to meet our vision to provide a championship experience that develops leaders who change the world. I’m proud to report that your response was overwhelming. With your generosity, the Black & Gold Club set numerous fundraising records that we should be very proud of.

Together, we: • Raised a total of $1,582,000 for Millersville Marauder Athletics – an increase of more than $500,000 • Increased the number of Black & Gold Club Members from 882 to 1,946 via successful team oriented “friends and family” letter campaigns • Held our first Dining with Champions Scholarship Dinner and Auction which raised an additional $20,000 for our student-athletes With the support, our coaches have been able to increase scholarship allocations to record numbers, enabling them to recruit and retain the highest quality student-athletes. In addition, your support has supplemented operating costs and facility improvements to ensure

our students are provided a top-of-the-line experience. We are proud our coaches and student-athletes are the front porch of Millersville University. To be a Marauder to is to serve. Our student-athletes are integral members of the community all while balancing life in the classroom and in competition. During the 2016-17 academic year, Millersville student-athletes totaled 2,886 hours of community service.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), comprised of representatives from each of the 19 teams, received the department’s first Community Service Award for its efforts in the Make-A-Wish reveal.

GAVIN’S WISH REVEALED

After raising $5,000 for Make-A-Wish, the Millersville University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the athletics department hosted a wish reveal for 9-year-old Parkesburg, Pa., resident Gavin Gretzula.

The wish reveal took place at the Black and Gold spring football game beginning with a press conference and signing a one-day contract to be a member of the Millersville football game. Gretzula battled leukemia for much of his life. He was joined at the event by his mother and twin sister.

Gavin received a Millersville uniform and took part in the team’s warm-up, kicking field goals and running routes and leading stretches with senior Kevin Wiggins. During the game, Gavin wore a headset and helped call plays. He stood on the sideline with the team, cheering them on.

At halftime, Gavin’s wish was revealed by members of the Millersville SAAC. After receiving themed gifts from representatives of each Millersville team, it was announced Gavin and his family were going to Disney World.

To finish the night, Gavin weaved through the defense to score a 40-yard touchdown, winning the game.

A YEAR OF COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE

 BASEBALL reached the NCAA Regional

Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Chas McCormick made history by becoming Millersville’s first four-time All-PSAC East selection and only the second to be named the division’s athlete of the year twice. He closed the season with 306 hits, ranking first in PSAC history.  Under first-year head coach Casey Stitzel, Men’s BASKETBALL improved its record by five wins, including a signature win against a No. 5-ranked and then undefeated Shippensburg.  Men’s GOLF made its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Super Regionals.

Connor Sheehan finished third, qualifying him to represent the Marauders at the NCAA Championships.  FOOTBALL received four All-PSAC East selections, the most since 2009.

Evan Stahl became the All-PSAC East first team punter since 1980.  Men’s SOCCER finished as the PSAC runner-up for the second year in a row, posting a record of 12-6-2. Chris Sosa and Kyle Finsterbush were named NSCAA All-Atlantic Region.

COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE

 The Millersville men’s and

women’s TENNIS teams competed under first-year head coach Matt Helsel.  WRESTLING’S Shane Ruhnke finished fifth at the NCAA Super Region 1 Championships and David Wuestner placed sixth at the PSAC Championships.  Women’s BASKETBALL reached the PSAC Tournament Quarterfinals for the 19th time in the last 20 years.  FIELD HOCKEY won its fifth consecutive PSAC Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth year in a row.

Taylor Parker, Aliza Mizak and Margaret Thorwart were named All-America. 

Women’s GOLF’s Danielle Greene finished runner-up at the PSAC Championships, and she, along with Danielle Freed, were named All-PSAC. 

Women’s Indoor TRACK AND FIELD was headlined by Sunflower Greene as she became the first Millersville thrower to be an indoor All-American. She finished seventh at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE

 In the outdoor season, Greene

was named PSAC Field MVP after winning the shot put and hammer throw on the same day in the Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She and Amanda Myers both earned All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  LACROSSE’s Sabrina Fusco and Natalie Sukanick earned All-PSAC honors.  In head coach Matt Procopio’s second year, women’s SOCCER improved by three wins in the conference and missed playoffs by just four points.  SOFTBALL’s Brittany Smith became the first Marauder to be named PSAC Softball Eastern Division Athlete of the Year after a record-breaking season.  Women’s SWIMMING earned its second consecutive top-10 finish at the PSAC Championships.  VOLLEYBALL’s Erin Harman recorded her 1,000th career kill in the final match of the season and ranked second in the PSAC in kills per set.

Sunflower Greene recorded an historic 2016-17 season. Greene set all-time PSAC records in both the outdoor shot put and hammer throw. She was an All-American in the indoor and outdoor seasons and was named the PSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in addition to the championships’ MVP.

DINING WITH CHAMPIONS

With more than 250 alumni, staff, student-athletes and friends of the athletic department in attendance, the first Dining with Champions Dinner and Silent Auction was a success. The event raised more than $18,000 for athletic scholarships and operations.

Attendees were treated to a moving speech from keynote speaker Anthony Robles, who won a NCAA Division I wrestling championship despite being born with one leg. Robles was a winner of the Jimmy V Award at the 2011 ESPY’s and in 2012, he was selected by President Barrack Obama as the Medal of Courage winner.

Millersville’s best and brightest student-athletes were recognized during the event. Field hockey’s Taylor Parker and baseball’s Chas McCormick were announced as Career Achievement Award winners. Field hockey’s Margaret Thorwart was presented with the Scholar Athlete Award. Millersville’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee won the Community Service Award for its work with Make-A-Wish, and volunteer golf coach Amy Kreider was the recipient of the Core Values Award, which is presented annually to the individual who exemplifies the core values of the Millersville University Athletic Department through their everyday actions.

Naming of Seaber Softball Stadium

The softball field at Millersville University was renamed the Seaber Softball Stadium in honor of Kathy Hughes Seaber and her late husband, Sam Seaber.

The Seaber/Hughes family has been a long-time supporter of Millersville University. She recently committed to fund more than $300,000 in new softball scholarships and the University honored her with the naming of the softball field.

Cooper Park FieldTurf Installation on a FieldTurf infield at Cooper Park was completed prior to the 2017 baseball season. The project was paid for through donor support, raising over $250,000 to date. Cooper Park is now the only stadium in the PSAC East with FieldTurf.

Branding

New signage that strengthens the Marauder brand and highlights our traditions was added at Biemesderfer Stadium, Carpenter-Trout Strength Center and McComsey Tennis Courts.

Millersville Athletics signed a five-year agreement with Under Armour. Under Armour is the official outfitter for on-field and trainer gear for all 19 intercollegiate athletic teams and staff.
