| editor's note Another month down and we are still not sure when our show season will begin. I personally hope this issue finds you all in good health and in the arena practicing for when we can open the gate to go show. The gates are opening again! After the last few months of living through the COVID-19 Pandemic, we wrote out some tips to help restart our equine community and return to the show pen.

It has taken me a few weeks to grasp onto the positive things that have come out of this situation, and has also let me experiment with my own self-doubts and creativity within Millennial Cowgirl. I belive this is the biggest season of growth for us all as we determine what really matters to us in life.

It has taken me a few weeks to grasp onto the positive things that have come out of this situation, and has also let me experiment with my own self-doubts and creativity within Millennial Cowgirl. I believe this is the biggest season of growth for us all as we determine what really matters to us in life. It is safe to say that horses will continue to be rooted into my life and I bet I can say the same about a majority of my readers. We are a unique kind, us equestrians, and it has been amazing watching all of us come together! I hope you all are partcipating in some virtual shows and if you are, we'd love to know which ones! We shared our favorites and it has been great watching all the positivity spread from the groups. Take a read at this month's issue and we're hoping by next month we will see you in the pen.Â

More Than Bluejeans

We deep dive with Brittney Chomistek about her love and sense of fashion!

Alexis has been intertwined into the equine world her whole life as her mother had grown up showing hunters back in California. She instilled into Alexis the love for these amazing animals. Her first horse's name was Bloomers, a ranch bred palomino mare. At 8 years old, Alexis was gifted her first AQHA show horse. At her first show she remembers her trainer telling her to just have a good ride and to not worry about how she placed. And of course, Alexis comes out of the pen with a blue ribbon! Seeing her parents crying in the stands after her win definitely got her hooked on the feeling of being in the show pen. Now the owner of Iron W Ranch, Alexis gets to bring prospects into the world that will create a legacy and win in the pen.

Going

Virtual

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, our equine industry has taken quite the hit. With the start of show season having been suspended, many associations, small businesses, and exhibitors have felt the loss of such an impact. Trainers rely on their clients to stay in-house, to get coached during shows, and to create the winning atmosphere we all love while we cheer each other on. Our equine small businesses rely on setting up at the shows while we do our shopping in between our classes. The associations we all belong to rely on us to come out and show our horse. With the virus keeping us on time-out, the loss for our industry has been magnificent, but we never gave up. It has been amazing to watch us all come together, bring positivity in the light of everything happening in the world, and create something amazing - the online world of horse showing! Within the span of a few weeks, there have been many virtual shows

|Â 16

sprouting all over the internet. With several large shows having to be cancelled due to the COVID19 situation, the show committees took to the internet to support all the exhibitors and small businesses have stepped to the plate to help support the awards! We here at Millennial Cowgirl fell in love with two virtual shows that are taking Facebook by storm during the pandemic. Keep reading so you, too, can partcipate in a growing virtual show world!

Chrisie Van Clef, owner of HorseScents, says that her years in the saddle have taught her so much about work ethic, competition, and horsemanship. Those same lessons are invaluable to her business and for her success as an adult amateur rider. Chrisie grew up in New Jersey and was riding by age 9. As a junior, she was competing in the Big Eq and Junior Hunter classes while training with George Morris, Frank Madden, and Bill Cooney. Caprioso, a 13 year old Oldenburg gelding, who came to Chrisie as a 3 year old, loves to cuddle and smell flowers as they walk through the farm. He unfortunately faced months of stressful treatment and rehabilitation in the summer of 2016. Using the lavender during the rehab process was a natural solution!

He unfortunately faced months of stressful treatment and rehabilitation in the summer of 2016. Using the lavender during the rehab process was a natural solution!

HorseScents HELP KEEP YOUR HORSE RELAXED

There were already several patches of the herb growing around her property and she remembered Caprioso leaning down to take a sniff one day. As Chrisie watched him struggle through rehab, she realized that she could bring the calming scent he loved inside and tie it to his halter. The result was almost instantaneous; his eyelids drooped, muscles relaxed, and the stress dissolved. Tying the lavender to his halter was sometimes difficult so Chrisie soon realized that she would need a new way to secure the scent with ease and without worrying about him or other horses taking a nibble. Her solution was ScentStraps! The initial idea for ScentStraps emerged in the summer of 2017. It took some time to grow more lavender, ensure that it was organic, obtain a patent and brainstorm ideas for how to safely attached the dried lavender to the halter. Chrisie also had another business which demanded attention, so production for ScentStraps in their current form didn't begin until late 2018. It also took time to get approval from USEF and FEI to ensure it would be show legal. Slight design changes have since been made to ensure optimal efficacy. The Dressage ScentStrap model, as well as the models with sheepskin were introduced in 2019.

HorseScents also has received independent test results in June of 2019 from Ann Baldwin, a Physiology Professor at the University of Arizona School of Medicine, that HorseScents altered a horses heart rate. This proved to Chrisie and her team what they had observed which was instrumental in the future of the business. |Â 26

For Chrisie, becoming an entrepreneur wasn't what she saw herself doing after college, but since then she has opened two small businesses and can't imagine doing anything else. She loves the gratification of being able to build something from the ground up, especially when there's an opportunity to improve upon a service or product that could help others. Fortunately, for Chrisie, she started HorseScents having already opened her tile design and supply business. The mistakes she made and the stumbling blocks she hit that first time around made opening HorseScents slightly less daunting. There were still some challenges to overcome, like attracting new customers and teaching equestrians about the natural power of lavender. HorseScents has since expanded their product line and enjoy the increasing number of sales each month! HorseScents is primarily used in the hunter/jumper disciplines, so they are looking forward to expanding their reach in our equestrian sport.

We got to know Miss Rodeo Canada 2018 this month by diving deep into her love of western and fashion. Brittney has always had a love for fringe and feathers which many western designers use and as some of you will notice, influences Brittney's own outfits. She started her western fashion page after giving up her title of Miss Rodeo Canada, initially using it as a tool to thank the many sponsors who so generously supported her throughout that year. Since then, Brittney's Instagram (@canadiancowgirlcloset) page has grown to a page that follows the industry and it's trends. These styles can then be adapted to each individual. Many of Brittney's outfits consist of a mix of western, mainstream, new, and vintage. In fact, two of her favorite items are a tooled leather purse that belonged to her great-grandmother and a pair of leather shorts that her mother wore in the 80's.

Fasion doesn't have to be expensive, but it should be uniquely you.

So where does Brittney do most of her shopping? Formerly in Nanton, Alberta, but now relocated in Calgary, is one of her favorite placesClassic Rodeo Boutique. The staff are great at helping her pair outfits together for every occasion. They carry a fantastic mix of high-end western clothing like Double D Ranch, Tasha Polizzi, and Old Gringo. They also have some mainstream lines like Joseph Ribkoff. If Brittney is looking for a classy outfit that is also unique with the 'WOW' factor, Classic Rodeo is always her first stop. Brittney does enjoy shopping at small privately owned boutiques rather than large box stores. Now a days there isn't much difference between local and online, as all of her favorite local boutiques have an Instagram or Facebook page for convenience shopping and who doesn't love shopping from the comfort of their own home? Brittney also tries simplifying the search and shopping process as well by tagging the boutiques in her posts for others that may be interested.

Brittney loves dressing up, putting on makeup, and doing her hair, but it isn't her daily look. She always starts with washing her face and following her daily skin care routine. If nothing is planned for the day you will find her fresh faced, with a pony tail and wearing a baseball cap.

There used to be so many rules about fashion. "Don't mix brown and black", "Don't wear white after Labour Day", "Never wear pink and red together", but Brittney believes fashion rules are meant to be broken. She was the kid who wore 2 different color Converse together all through school AND she wore them with dresses. Brittney even made a duct tape dress. If she liked it, she wore it! She still carries that belief today- forget the fashion rules and wear what you love. If you love what you are wearing, you will look confident. So don't be afraid to mix that fringe leather jacket with a chiffon skirt, or wear a fantastic pair of tall boots with your shorts, or to even dig out that favorite purse your grandmother used to carry.

All fashion you wear makes a statement about you.

Tack Talk with

Roosa Tack

Restoration With the start of our show season significantly delayed, now is the perfect time to take care of those grimey show saddles and greasy headstalls. The extended time off means we are more than ready to get back into the pen which means you should look just as amazing as you feel. It is important to remember that clean tack increases the longevity of it in the long run. It is also equally important to not over oil your leather. Tack Talk with

Roosa Tack

Restoration With the start of our show season significantly delayed, now is the perfect time to take care of those grimey show saddles and greasy headstalls. The extended time off means we are more than ready to get back into the pen which means you should look just as amazing as you feel. It is important to remember that clean tack increases the longevity of it as well as making you look more professional in the pen. It is also equally important to not over oil your leather. And remember, oxygen may be our friend, but it is not a friend of the silver on your tack! Beth Roosa, owner of Roosa Tack Restoration, sat down and gave us some tips on bringing the life back to your tack.

The Do It Yourself Checklist: Here are some tips to put an edge on your overall look in the arena and put some shine back into your ride:

Wipe the dust off with a damp microfiber towel after a ride, clean it with saddle soap and oil it with a light oil at least once a month.

Wipe your silver off whenever you can! Beth cannot stress this point enough. If your silver is exposed to air, it will tarnish, even in a saddle case. Some companies do make anti-tarnish padded carrying bags (Harris Leather & Silver-Workers), but it will still get exposed to oxygen which is what causes the tarnish. Invest in a good silver cleaner, or just let the pros handle it.

If you do choose to polish your own silver, be very mindful to keep the cleaner off your leather. It will dry the leather out and possibly darken in those spots. Beth sees a lot of polish stuck in the cracks and tooling of the leather due to the improper use.

Roosa Tack Restoration offers deep cleanings, where she takes everything apart, inspects it for faults, and then cleans and conditions. You can also do the light cleaning where everything is not taken apart, but is just cleaned and conditioned where it is easily accessible. Minor repairs and replacements, such as fenders, conchos, turning stirrups/fenders can be done as well.

When you're cleaning your tack, take the time to check your tree. Look for cracks, feel for any weaknesses and bending.

Here, Beth is checking for any weaknesses in the tree by slowly putting pressure on the horn.

This will also show any weakness in the cantle and pommel.

| CONT. Check your fenders. Pull them down through the tree a bit to the thinnest part, making sure there are no tears.

Check your off billet and latigo, making sure the knots are still intact.

Check all D-rings and riggings.
