ED'SNote

z i L Editor's Note To this day it still shocks me that I have had so much support for this little endeavor that has grown so much since 2019. Without any of my readers, this just would not be possible. Over the last several years, we have pivoted our focus from anything industry related to my main passion, anything involving the show arena. Especially those amazing show clothes we love to show in!

Last month we were able to purchase a camera to start taking our favorite photos - candids! This has been so fun to learn how to do & it really does grasp why we do what we do. Capturing those special moments before you take your last inhale of breath before trotting into the pen will never get old! There is even more on the way (we just love to keep growing! (;

Thanks so much!

specializing in Used High End Show Tack and her Custom Cedar Creek Show Pads. Frankie spent her time in the corporate world, traveling extensively and building her skills in sales, marketing and product development with a variety of equestrian retailers like Noble Outfitters and State Line Tack. The duo knew that they wanted to go into business together, and build something on a foundation of superior customer service. They both saw the disconnect between large companies and their customers and they wanted to bridge that gap. Their dream finally became a reality with the creation of Backroad Trading Company in 2017. Both Frankie and Allie come from families that have zero horse knowledge. As kids, they were able to get involved in Missouri 4-H and ultimately buy their first horses. While many speculated that it was "just a phase" they both knew that horses were a passion that would not pass. They earned their spurs through their teenage years buying cheap prospects, starting and showing them, and slowly upgrading to nicer show horses. In their 20's they showed at open shows and on the Buckskin circuits and now in their 30's, they have moved through the ranks showing at the highest level with APHA, AQHA, and NSBA. Allie currently focuses on futurity hunter under saddle and lounge line horses while Frankie shows in Amateur All Around events with her long time partner Carlos (His Time To Win). With over 50 years of combined horse experience, they have chased and achieved many of their dreams, including numerous APHA and NSBA World and Reserve World Championships, one Quarter Horse Congress Championship and countless all around awards.

20 years ago, in a small Missouri town, a friendship was born that would lead to this business. Owners Allie (Garvey) Littlefield & Frankie (Hart) Sutherland became inseparable while showing as kids. Their love for horses and passion for the industry would take them down different roads, but the dream always remained; to build something together that would align their careers with their passion. Allie spent much of that time building a successful horse boarding facility and online business

Hands down the custom BackRoad show blankets are their hero product. They have worked hard to perfect the process and love the satisfaction that comes from working 1 on 1 with clients to match their outfits and create unique, custom saddle blankets that elevate their show ring look. With a 100% satisfaction and color match guarantee, and an emphasis on customer service, BackRoad has sold over 5,000 show blankets and all boasts 5 star reviews. They are also honored to have won the Show Horse Today Reader's Choice Awards for Best Show Pads for consecutive years. Their custom show pads also come in two tiers: their regular $199 show pads and their extremely popular Elite $399 show pads which feature an upgraded wool that allows for a tighter weave. These high end show pads are endorsed by many of the industry's most prestigious riders including their sponsored riders: Leonard Berryhill, Karen Qualls, Brian Isbell Garcia & Max Tallone. Initially, BackRoad attended a full schedule of horse shows. Allie and Frankie would be on the road constantly, nurturing their mobile business while also taking care of their online customers. At times, the demand of traveling made it difficult to keep up with the custom show pads being ordered, but when COVID-19 hit, and horse shows across the country were cancelled, they were forced to make a shift that ultimately improved their business. During that time, they focused on their website and custom pad business, and began partnering with a few select show clothing dealers to carry their line of show blankets. Now, the team sets up at a very few horse shows, and instead send their show blankets on the road with premier dealers like Showgirls Apparel and Kevin Garcia Originals. They also work closely with many designers, collaborating on swatch colors and coordinating pads for outfits by Marliee's Designer Show Apparel, Lux Looks, Winning Couture, Housewear, Sarah Longworth Designs, Brittz Glitz, Totally Outfitted, and more!

This year, BackRoad is continuing to focus on their custom show blanket clients. They are also working to build an even larger offering of in stock pads on their website, which can be tough as pads tend to sell as fast as they can make them! The biggest 2022 plan is a new addition to the family as owner Frankie welcomes her first baby in August!

Vintage

The Corner

A small article series by Mary Moorman

For June we have a Lieha Steha vintage flocked toy model horse. These horses are a rare find and are hard to come by. Lieha Steha model horses were manufactured in Western Germany in the 1960's possibly until 1980. Not much information is available about them other than they all have foot wheels so that they can be stood up and rolled on a hard surface. Model horses have 3 or 4 wheels and originally most came with a saddle and bridle. This Steha horse model is in good condition considering it's age. Flocking is mostly solid and thick with a few rubs. Mane and tail are in good condition. This horse has a 3 foot wheels and stands and rolls well. 12" long by 9" high. Reeves were the exclusive U.S. distributor of Steha horses. Prices range from $45-$125 depending on condition. Happy Collecting!
