STORY/PHOTO BY MCSN KAYLA KING NAS Oceana Public Affairs Sailors at Naval Air Station Oceana gathered at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd May 28 to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The 2014 theme for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is “I Am Beyond.” The phrase reflects the aspirations of those who transcended beyond barriers to equal opportunity in America, according to the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute website. “I grew up on the beautiful island called Guam. Guam was invaded by another country Dec. 8, 1941, which so happens to be Dec. 7, 1941 on the other side of the international date line.We all know what happened on Dec. 7, 1941. A U.S. territory in the middle of the Pacific, where they only had a small squadron of Marines to guard that place was overrun by another country,” began guest speaker, Rear Adm. Peter A. Gumataotao, commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. “My mom was 18-years-old. My mom was put in a concentration camp down in the southern part of Guam. My dad was in the Navy. He was at Pearl Harbor the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was on board USS California; California sunk that day,” said Gumataotao. He reassured those in attendance that his father was one of the few fortunate people that day who survived. Gumataotao shared how the first lesson in life he learned was from his mother.
