Armed Forces motorcyclists participate in 14th annual Fleet Ride By MC2 La’Cordrick Wilson Navy Public Affairs Support Element East
PORTSMOUTH
More than 60 service members participated in the 14th annual Bayside HarleyDavidson’s Fleet Ride, Oct. 4. A group of riders departed the Bayside Harley-Davidson dealership for a 10-mile ride, escorted by the Portsmouth Sheriff's Department Motorcycle Unit and City of Portsmouth Motor Squad through Portsmouth’s Mid-town Tunnel. Then looping back through the tunnel, the ride ended back at the Bayside dealership. “When we started the ride back in 2001, it was our way of thanking the community for its support,” said Kevin Johnson, general manager of Bayside Harley-Davidson. “Being retired Navy, along with most of the community, it was only right that we honor those in the Armed Forces.” The Fleet Ride, also called “Rumble through the Tunnel,” was started by Bayside Harley-Davidson’s owner Maurice Slaughter and retired Navy employees, who wanted to show their appreciation to the local military community by becoming one of the largest donators to Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).

The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) departed BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair after a year-long dry-dock phased maintenance availability (DPMA) to return to her homeport of Naval Station Norfolk, Sept. 30. The move back to her homeport represents the next step in a two-year process to fully maximize and modernize equipment and systems aboard Wasp. “We’ve had our weapons systems upgraded, our sensors and communications upgraded, and we’ve had the structure of the ship upgraded,” said Capt. Brian Teets, commanding officer. “It’s been two long years of work to modernize this warship and execute some modifications to bring aboard new
equipment to allow us to fully employ the capabilities of the F-35B and more effectively operate with the other units of our amphibious ready group.” To Sailors aboard Wasp, the twohour transit down the Elizabeth River represented a breath of fresh air and a sense of relief from the yards. “The environment’s better here, being back on base,” said Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Collin Brosz, a Wasp Sailor. “I’m looking forward to going out to sea and doing all the stuff I signed up for.” Over the period of the next two years, Wasp ramps up toward her scheduled 2016 deployment. Wasp Sailors have transitioned from living aboard a barge to living on a warship, and will continue to get their ship mission ready awaiting the near term day of sea trials.
