This project is a suitability analysis and a site design for a beautiful and productive homestead on 25 acres of land in western Massachusetts. The ecological design process involved goals articulation and thorough analyses of the land to determine how topography, soils, solar exposure, access, water flow, and legal constraints can inform a resilient and ecologically sound design.
In the final design, buildings and trees are located to create optimal micro-climates that take advantage of solar exposure and protect against winter winds, making for a more energy efficient home and a more comfortable living space. The home and barns are oriented south for passive solar heating and are nestled into an edible landscape full of fruit trees, berry bushes, and garden beds.
