ChemicalPollutionandItsEnvironmentalImpact

Introduction

Chemicalpollutionhasbecomeabigproblemfortheentiremankind.Thisisbecausethis kindofcorruptionofnatureanditsdestructionaffectstheentireplant,inonewayortheother. Tounderstandhowtodealwiththeproblemsofpollutionandhowtoanalyzesuchincidentswill thispaperfocuson.Wewillstartwiththedefinitionofchemicalpollution.Pollutioninitsbasest andthesimplestmeaningisthedegradation,andcontainmentoftheenvironment.[1][2]

Pollutionhappenswhenaccidents,industries,people,trade,andthelikedirectlyorindirectly, andknowinglyorunknowinglytaintthesurroundingnature,andthuscausegreathurttothe ecologicalandenvironmentalbalance.[1][2][3]

Wewillbefocusingonacid-watercontamination.Mostacidwaterisproducedbymining andheavyindustries.Acid,cyanide,andmercuryisusedtoleachoutthegold,silver,andthe likepreciousandsemipreciousmetals.[1][2]Oncethesemetalshavebeenleachedout,the contaminatedwaterissetasideforlaterdecommissionordecontamination.Thelargepooled waterthenleechesoutintothesurroundingnature,thuscausinggreatharm.[2]Thisisthe biggestsourceofwaterpollutionfromacid.Thiscontaminationalsocausesacidraintoform.[2]

QualitativeandquantitativeAnalyticalApproach

Thequalitativeapproachwillbetotestthefishpopulationforthewaterinquestion. Also,willbeincludedinthetastetest.Thequalitativeapproachmainlydealswiththequalityor thevalueofthedata,ratherthanthequantitativeornumericalvalue.Theriverwaterneedsto haveacertainoxygenleveltoallowfishpopulationstothrive,andmultiply.[1]Thiscanonlybe possibleifthewaterlevelistowardsthemedianpHof7.[1]Otherwise,thelowpHwillkillor maimthefish.

Forthequantitativeapproach,wewillneedtousethepHofthewaterinquestion.The pHwillanswermanyquestionsregardingthewaterquality.Thepossiblegaseousdissociation, solubilityofions,mineralassociationwithsoilformations,oxygenlevel,andturbidity(how coloredthewateris).[1]Thequantitativeapproachhelpsregulators,institutionsoflearning,and governmentstoquicklyascertainifthewaterispolluted,andhowmuch.Thepollutionscale,in thiscase,pHreading,willbethemostusefulandhelpfulidentifieringaugingpollutionlevelin theriverwater.[1]ElectronicpHreadingmeterscanbeeasilyplacedalongthelengthofthe river,andthusgethourly,daily,weekly,andmonthlydata.Thesedatathencanbestored, analyzedwiththelateststatisticalmethods,andpredictivetoolstounderstandwhatcanpossibly happentotheregionifthecurrentconditioncontinues,orifitgetsworse.Theformulasand principlesthatcanbemostusefulforthiskindofanalysisarethefollowing:FreeEnergy, ChemicalEquilibrium(strongandweakacids),LeChatelier’sPrinciple,CommonionEffect, IonicComplexFormations.[1]
