Sports tourism is the flagship for Mijas at FITUR International Tourism Trade Fair in Madrid Under the banner ‘In Mijas, you gain!’, the area of tourism presented a sports and tourist events programme that will attract more than 3,000 people Karen Anne McMahon

Mijas will become, in 2011, the Costa del Sol capital of sport. Three major international sporting events will take place in a series of tournaments and Championships that portend an excellent tourist impact with the arrival of thousands of tourists in Mijas. The presence in the town of first class sports and tourist infrastructure, combined with close cooperation between private initiatives and the Town Hall, make it possible to

profile sport in 2011 as one of the main engines of economic mijeña recovery, contributing to the quality of the destination. Precisely this tempting sports offer together with incentive tourism, was the bid that the mijeño consistory tourism area presented yesterday, Thursday the 20th at FITUR. Mayor, Antonio Sanchez, opened the presentation by clarifying the wide range of possibilities Mijas has in the tourist area. Then

the Councillor for Tourism, Fuensanta Lima, unveiled the first of the events, the ‘Vive Mijas Golf Week’, Five mijeño golf courses will be participating from the 13th to the 17th of June, for the final of a golfing circuit to be disputed in the UK. An ambitious advertising campaign that will reach over 100,000 potential players, the 25 participating players and their companions will enjoy, apart from the competition, a full programme of parallel events,

with gastronomic, cultural and leisure proposals. A similar stay will be enjoyed by participants of the ‘Mijas Handball Cup’, a tournament to be held from June the 27th to July the 3rd in which teams from several continents will participate in the town for the Championship final. Returning to golf, the World Amateur Golf Championships to be held in Spain will be hosted by La Cala, Golf on the 27th and 28th

of August. With the finals in South Africa. Tourism incentives and other proposals emphasise incentive tourism. and ways to diversify the offer, searching for new sectors: business, gastronomy, cultural, and cruise tourism. In this sense, CONFEC RED 2011, 4/02/11 in mijas will be one of the largest private tourism meetings, a day of ‘teambuilding’ and direct experiences related to culture and the Andalusian cuisine.

FRD MIJAS. The Electoral Census Office informs all citizens that: EU nationals resident in Spain (except Norwegians that need 3 years of residence in Spain to vote) that are registered on the “Empadronamiento” inhabitants list of their town hall, will be able to go to their town hall and register their intention to vote until the 31st of January 2011 in case they have not voted in previous elections. S pa n i s h n at i o n a l s a re automatically included if they are registered at their town hall and they will be able to vote in the municipality where they were registered before the 31st of December 2010. Non EU nationals, residents in Spain for more than five years and on the “Empadronamiento” will have until the 25th of January 2011 to register their intention to vote. They recommend that all

month the new lighting will start operating on the A-387 highway. The Mijas operational services have commissioned the connection boxes, pipes, niches for lighting and the foundations for the streetlights. Installation ensures the light uniformity of the road and will enable drivers and passers-by to move with greater security.
