A very warm Spring welcome to the members of our Augustinian community.
Our community has experienced great joys already this year, just a few months into 2024. Pope Francis has asked the international Catholic community to mark this year as a "Year of Prayer" - and so we will pray. We will pray for all of the members of our community, their families, their friends, and those that they hold dear in the silence of their hearts.
We will also pray in a special way for the success of our Legacy Campaign, a $2.0 million capital campaign that will help us raise essential funds to bolster our vocation and formation efforts and evangelization efforts, as we spread the Gospel and our Augustinian tradition in our local and international communities in new and creative ways. These ministries are core to our Mission and we ask for your prayers, support, and generosity in our shared effort to carry on our Augustinian Legacy.
Our prayers of gratitude are also extended on behalf of those who we will honor at our Augustinian Gala on April 19th at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. For Greg and Wendy Jania, who have been exemplars of Augustinian values and dynamic supporters of the Order, for Fr. Bill Lego, O.S.A., a good friend and a great man who has led and guided the Province - and his Parish, St. Turibius - with compassion, and for Fr. Wally McNicholas, O.S.A. who continues to be an inspiration to our community even from the next life.
Prayers of thanks for you,

Mission Statement of the Midwest Augustinians
As we begin 2024, our parishes, schools, and ministries continue to be active. Our Friars have been busy supporting our various ministries, and our communities have been celebrating their Augustinian heritage and traditions. The following sections include quick recaps of what’s been going on around the Province. To stay up to date with the most recent happenings, subscribe to our e-newsletters, daily reflections, and social media accounts by visiting our website at www.midwestaugustinians.org
On January 10, 2024, St. Rita High School Student Government and School Administration were joined by the Mendel Catholic High School Alumni Association to rededicate Rev. Gregor Mendel, O.S.A. Science & Technology Hall.
The hall now includes two new displays of Mendel Catholic and the life of Augustinian Friar and scholar, Fr. Gregor Mendel, O.S.A., as well as new signage.
Fr. Mendel was a botanist, teacher, and is well known as the "Father of Genetics" as the first person to document the mathematical foundation of the science of genetics through his work with peas in his garden.
Mendel Catholic was an Augustinian college preparatory high school founded in 1951 by the Augustinian Order in Chicago's Roseland community. During it's 37year history, it educated and formed young men until its closure in 1988.
The Rededication of the Rev. Gregor Mendel, O.S.A. Science & Technology Hall included a Mass that was attended by the entire St. Rita student body followed by a blessing of Mendel Hall from Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. and a reception for Mendel Alumni.
The new display area includes a portrait of Gregor Mendel, photos of the Mendel Campus, a story of the history of Mendel Catholic High School, a photo and information
about the school's founder, Fr. John Seary, O.S.A., as well as a video with scrolling profiles of the Members of the Mendel Alumni Association Hall of Fame, and the fifteen Monarchs
who died in Vietnam.
If you are interested to learn more about Mendel High School or get involved with the Alumni Association, visit www.mendelchs.org.
The students of Austin Catholic High School celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by volunteering across the community.
Students began the day in prayer, comparing the words of St. Augustine with Dr. King - love, friendship, non-violent protest, peace, and making a positive
impact through service.
Students joined faculty, staff, and parents supporting local charities and organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, MacWarm, Chesterfield Fire Dept, BetterWay Detroit, St. Thecla, St. Therese and St. Nicholas Byzantine, an assisted living facility, an early
childhood Academy, and Macomb Community College’s day of service activities and locations.
The day was a powerful witness to Augustinian values and students were encouraged to continue to be the change we wish to see in the world, inspired by the example set by Dr. King and St. Augustine.
From January 28th to February 2nd, our Augustinian schools participated in Catholic Schools Week 2024, observing the week with various programs and opportunities to celebrate Catholic education.
At Providence Catholic High School, students had the opportunity to volunteer and support local organizations during Catholic Schools Week as they strengthen the communities around them.
During the four years of school at Providence, students are required to take part in 60 hours of service work - and many complete moreas part of the "A Call to Serve" or "A.C.T.S." program.
Our Prior Provincial, Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A., attended the annual Asamblea in the Vicariate of San Juan de Sahagun of Chulucanas from Jan 8-14. The purpose of this gathering in Trujillo is to give current reports on community life and the apostolate. It is also the time to announce personnel changes throughout the Vicariate. Bishop Lizardo Estrada, Auxiliary Bishop of Cusco and member of the Vicariate of Apurimac, gave the opening address on Synodality.
Fr. Tony also followed up with a visit to Pacasmayo where two projects are currently underway. The Colegio de El Señor de los Milagros received a grant/gift to repair damage to the school building due to floods as well as the newly established computer lab.
Next, Fr. Tony visited the
Vicariate of Iquitos (Jan 15-20) to present the final gift to the parish of Santo Cristo de Bagazán on behalf of the late Carl Adducci, a Mendel alum ’59, who helped sustain a food program (comedor) for many of the residents in that region.
In December 2023, Villanova College Grade 12 students and Grade 11 leaders spent four days at a KAIROS retreat together; prayerfully talking and listening to each other and themselves.
This time spent in community, before they prepare to go in separate directions at the end of their senior year, brings them together in a very significant way that will create a bond that will last for years to come and hopefully, a better understanding of the presence of God in their lives.
The KAIROS retreat experience is a powerful opportunity for students to grow individually in their faith, and to grow together as a community.
At the turn of the year, Augustinian friars from across the country came together at SEEK, a catholic youth conference hosted by Focus, a national organization that fosters Catholic fellowship at universities, parishes, and through mission work.
During SEEK, our Augustinian Friars from all three North American Provinces had the opportunity to spend time in community with young people, meeting fellow religious, and sharing our Augustinian charism with attendees.
This year's conference was held in St. Louis, MO, and was attended by Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., Fr. Philip Yang, O.S.A., Fr. Jeremy Hiers, O.S.A., Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., Br. David Relstab, O.S.A., and Br. David Marshall, O.S.A.
In fact, Br. David Marshall first met the Augustinians at a SEEK conference years ago, evidence of the importance of this ministry.
Greetings from my Office in Rome...
Having recently been named a Cardinal of our Church, I can say that I am only starting to feel the full weight of the duties and responsibilities that have been entrusted to me. When Fr. Bernie asked me to be the Honorary Co-Chair of the Legacy Campaign for the Midwest Province, I felt honored, and I did not hesitate to accept the invitation.
My life as an Augustinian began in the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. I began my over fifty years of life and service as an Augustinian in 1969 at the St. Augustine High School Seminary in Holland, MI. Since my profession of vows in 1978, my service has included work in our parishes, our schools, in the missions in Peru, as Director of Formation, as Prior Provincial, and also as Prior General of the Order.
Our schools, our parishes, and all the ministries of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel depend upon us having well formed, educated, and dedicated Augustinians. We also recognize the importance of having laity, men and women, who understand and appreciate what it means to be an Augustinian, and in turn see the value that our Charism brings to the Church. In our Province we take exceptionally good care of our retired men and infirm (the living foundation of the legacy upon which we propose to build) and our brothers and sisters in Peru.
Now is the time to focus on promoting vocations, inviting men to discern as Augustinians, and spreading the word about what it means to be Augustinian. Vocations and evangelization are what we need at this seminal moment. Now is the time to reflect upon legacy, appreciate where it has brought us, and appreciate where we can go if only we all work together. This then is the focus of our Legacy Campaign – vocations, formation, and evangelization, keys to our service now and for many years to come.
I am asking you please to join us in prayer for our retired and infirm, for those working in Peru, for our schools and parishes, and then to make the most generous gift that you can for the success of this Legacy Campaign. For my part, I will do all that I can to see it succeed.
Thank you so much.
A future of faith, hope, and service starts in the present, with all of us today. We are a mendicant order - we are not funded by Rome or by local dioscese - our benefactors support us.
The following are our goals and how we expect to achieve them as we enhance our ministry.
Goal: Vocation & Formation
Your advocacy, sponsorship, donations, and commitments are essential to achieving and exceeding our goals over the next three to five years.
Use our in-person and virtual platforms to welcome young people as they discern their calling to religious life.
In all of our present ministries, we will continue to actively promote vocations for our Order and the Church. Additionally, we must and will continue to develop our internet presence, attend youth gatherings, and develop relationships with individual candidates.
Young Augustinians in our formation programs will continue to pursue personal, spiritual, pastoral, and academic excellence. Though costly (almost $50k per student per year for up to seven years), study in a variety of graduate programs and educational venues will continue to be a part of Augustinian formation.
We will continue to invest in and enhance our vocation outreach efforts.
By participating in youth gatherings, visiting colleges, high schools and parishes, and continuing to use social media, we will seek and form men who wish to live the Rule of Augustine with joy, hope, and a heart for service in Augustinian communities.
Working with, supporting, and ministering to discerners is a very deliberate process that takes years of effort, concentration, and prayer. We share our attractive Augustinian tradition and our common life with young people.
All religious orders are constantly seeking vocations.
Under the leadership of Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., and Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., and with the support of the Prior Provincial and all the Augustinians, this program for Vocations will include the elements detailed below:
House, feed, clothe, educate, and form the men who decide to pursue a vocation as a priest or brother - a seven-year commitment - that costs approximately $50,000 per man, per year.
Conduct vocation promotion talks at our own parishes, and at other community parishes.
Hold vocation promotion events in our schools and parishes to increase awareness.
Visit campus ministry offices and Catholic centers to be an in-person resource for students.
Host in-person discernment weekends with interested young men twice per year. Over the past five years, thirty young men have participated, even with two years lost due to COVID restrictions.
Continue a digital vocation outreach program through our vocation website (beafriar.org) and social media channels to reach young men wherever they may be. Over the past year, our work has reached over 300,000 individuals, and learned of over 130 interested candidates across all three Augustinian provinces.
Continue to invest in video, photo, and other storytelling assets that communicate our mission.
“Let us leave a little room for reflection, room too for silence. Enter into yourself and leave behind all noise and confusion. Look within yourself.”
- Saint Augustine (Sermon 52, 22)
Evangelize with talks, seminars, and retreats - enhanced by additional staff, the creative deployment of our Friars, trained lay volunteers, digital media, and other resources.
We will continue ministry at high schools (Cascia Hall Preparatory School, St. Rita High School, and Providence Catholic High School) and in local parish communities (St. Rita Parish, St. Jude Parish, St. Bernard Parish, and St. Turibius Parish). We also plan to expand support to Austin Catholic High School (Detroit) and Villanova College (King City, Canada).
Using our available resources, we will preach the Good News and amplify our Augustinian Mission and Identity beyond our traditional sites of ministry and service.
With the help of additional provincial staff, including a Director of Augustinian Lay Engagement, we will initiate a new evangelization program using a broad array of in-person and online digital platforms to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the vision of St. Augustine, continuing our Legacy of centuries. AugustinianLegacy.org
We believe that the Order and our mission will benefit from proactive outreach efforts to share the story, virtues, and charism of what it means to be like St. Augustine and live out Augustinian values in daily life.
This work is core to our Augustinian Mission & Identity as we share the Good News of the Gospel with our communities.
Programs and events about Augustine’s teaching and values to be presented in schools, parishes, Newman Centers, and at local, regional, and national Catholic gatherings.
Present and be involved at ecumenical gatherings (Augustine is the most-quoted saint in Christianity).
Create annual events and gatherings for those interested in learning about St. Augustine.
Extend the current Augustinian Values Institute (AVI) to all who want to be part of the larger, worldwide Augustinian family and community.
Under the leadership of our Midwest Province and with the support of our Augustinians and staff, our view of a comprehensive “new evangelization” program will include the elements detailed below:
We hired a full-time staff member, Maryellen Harrington, to work with Augustinian priests and brothers to develop outreach programs in parishes, schools, and dioceses. Programming will focus on the teachings, virtues, and charism of St. Augustine and the Augustinian Order.
Use modern evangelization tools and methods to spread the Good News and Augustinian way of life to new communities online.
Actively participate, attend, and support the International Augustinian Youth Encounter (AYE) and World Youth Day to engage with young Catholics from around the globe.
Focus our outreach towards adults age 21 to 60 who are not currently in an Augustinian community (school or parish) in an effort to expand the Faith and to share our Augustinian values.
The term “legacy” can be described as creating, leaving, or passing forward a tradition and history of behaviors worth emulating. The Augustinians have had such a legacy for almost eight centuries. During those centuries and continuing today, we have dedicated our lives to promoting the virtues and teachings of Christ in the tradition of St. Augustine. Since 1244 A.D., the year of our founding, countless numbers of souls have been served by that legacy.
Over time our numbers have ebbed and flowed and so have our pastoral assignments in our various ministries. Our mission and corresponding values have remained the same. Ultimately, our goal each day is to contribute to a world that is more peaceful and more just. I believe that the world needs us more today than ever.
This Campaign will support our goals, hopes, and plans resulting from our many prayers and deliberations. It is our path forward. I ask you to join us to continue our legacy. With your support, our legacy becomes your legacy: a ministry of service in the name of Jesus Christ and our spiritual father, St. Augustine.
In gratitude for your prayerful and generous assistance,
Very

The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor Rev. William Lego, O.S.A., for his years of service to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel as a missionary, pastor, treasurer, Prior Provincial, and a friend to many in the community, especially at St. Turibius Parish, where he has served as Pastor for
Fr. Bill exemplifies the Augustinian charism of “community” in his work now, as he has through the entirety of his journey as an Augustinian friar, priest, and leader. We are happy to be able to honor
The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor Greg and Wendy Jania, longtime members of the Augustinian community and friends of the Augustinian Order.
The Jania’s family history with the Order began decades ago, when Greg’s father, Jim, attended St. Rita of Cascia High School and later returned to the school as a teacher.
While attending St. Rita, Greg formed a relationship with Fr. McNicholas, fellow honoree, who later officiated Wendy and Greg's wedding and remained close to their family as they raised two children, Alec and Olivia, who both graduated from Villanova University.
We, the Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel are pleased to celebrate the Janias’ legacy of support and service to the Augustinian community as 2024 Augustinian Gala Honorees. To read the Jania's full Honoree Bio, visit www.augustiniangala.org/greg-and-wendy-jania
Rev. Walter McNicholas, O.S.A. (Posthumously)
The 2024 Augustinian Gala will honor and pay tribute to the life and lasting impact of Rev. Walter McNicholas, O.S.A., an Augustinian renowned for his service to the Order and community. With nearly half a century dedicated to education and pastoral care, Father McNicholas, known as "Father McNic" by generations of students, left an enduring mark on the community.
Father McNicholas's enthusiasm for the Augustinian way of life was contagious, and he encouraged many students to consider joining the Augustinian Order. He was known for his quiet, steadfast faith and dedication to both the religious and educational aspects of his calling.
It is our great pleasure to celebrate his legacy as one of the 2024 Augustinian Gala Honorees. To read Fr. McNicholas' full Honoree Bio, visit www.augustiniangala.org/rev-walter-mcnicholas-osa

The following article was originally published in the Archdiocese of Chicago's Annual Appeal Ministry Spotlight magazine, Lumen.
By CARLA BEECHERA recent post-Covid survey of parishioners at St. Rita of Cascia on Chicago’s South Side revealed an alarming problem: a number of congregants were suffering from depression and anxiety. As leader of its Pastoral Migratoria Ministry, which is supported in part by gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal, Federico Padilla took the urgency of the situation to heart.
“People were hurting enough that some had even tried to take their own lives,” Padilla said. “So, I kept thinking, ‘What can we do to help all of these people?’”
Padilla reached out to Chicago mental health professional and licensed hypnotherapist Salvador Mora, whom he met during a parenting session at his daughter’s school. The two, along with Pastor Homero Sanchez, O.S.A., set about creating St. Rita’s Mental Health Ministry support group, which began offering group sessions to about 20 parishioners every other week last January.
“We are focusing our energies on reshaping how we look at mental health,” said Father Sanchez. “In addition to creating awareness of the need for support, we also are offering our community useful and meaningful treatment. With Mr. Mora’s guidance and his willingness to help, we are committed to this ministry.” According to Padilla, the parish has seen an increase of stress on every age group since the beginning of the pandemic. They thought that the ministry would attract only teenagers, but they immediately found that adults also came to learn ways of coping with long-term problems.
Mora offers practical techniques to apply to their daily encounters with anxiety, including breathing exercises that help participants to relax. As a licensed hypnotherapist, Mora uses other techniques to help attendees go deep into their subconscious where they can be more open to suggestions on new ways to think about troubling issues.
Participants learn a breathing technique where they close their eyes and silently repeat to themselves, “God is peace,” seven times. “This allows God to work,” said Mora. “Within 10 minutes, feelings of stress, depression or anxiety lessen.” More also suggests that participants practice mindfulness to ease tension by walking in nature while thinking, “God is the path of peace and power.” “Those taking advantage of the meetings say that life is getting so much better,” Padilla said. Padilla said they also have created a buddy system where participants can pair with one another to be available for
immediate support after they leave the classroom.
“The group provides emotional support and understanding,” Mora said. “Participants see that they are not alone in their struggles. It’s a place and time to ventilate emotions, regain the power to find solutions, receive words of encouragement and realize that God is always there, in the good times and in the bad. With his grace and our fellowship, we learn to handle what life sends us.”
Padilla hopes that interest in this group will continue to grow, and that people will recognize that the ministry is offering an important and life-changing resource. “This has been amazing for me,” he said. “I am using what I am learning with my whole family. When you help one person, you also help a whole family and the community.”
To learn more about St. Rita of Cascia’s Mental Health Ministry, please contact Federico Padilla at 773.727.1862.
The Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel is pleased to announce Maryellen Harrington as the Province’s first Director of Augustinian Lay Engagement.
This is a new position at the Province, and Maryellen will be responsible for developing new Augustinian evangelization ministries and programming, coordinating outreach efforts across existing ministry sites, and providing engagement opportunities for members of our diverse community.
Maryellen brings over two decades of youth ministry and faith formation experience to this role. She joins the Midwest Augustinians from Old St. Mary’s Parish in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago where she was a Pastoral Associate / Director of Lifelong Faith Formation. Maryellen holds a Master's in Pastoral Studies from the Catholic Theological Union and is
a Lay Ecclesial Minister formed at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL.
“I believe that everyone has a unique contribution to make to our Augustinian community,” said Harrington. “Through collaboration, we can collectively strengthen our bonds of friendship while also encountering Christ. I look forward to building bridges and fostering connections in this role.”
Maryellen started work at the Province on January 22, 2024.
“We’re honored that Maryellen is joining us to take on this new position and create a robust Lay Engagement program for the Province,” said Prior Provincial Fr. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. “Her energy, enthusiasm, and experience are wonderful attributes, and all of the Province staff and leadership are eager to welcome her to the role.”
The Midwest Augustinian community gathered together to share in the cheer and warmth of the Christmas Season on December 10th, 2023, at Palermo's Restaurant in Oak Lawn, IL.
Mingling and greeting over cocktails and a buffet dinner, many of our Augustinian friars were in attendance, including our prenovices and the newly-professed who are in formational studies at Catholic Theological Union and living at the St. Augustine Friary in Hyde Park, IL.
Celebrating with our community during this special time of the year is a wonderful reminder of the strength of our friendships and our commitment to our shared Catholic faith and Augustinian values. We look forward to celebrating with you through the rest of 2024.

Very Rev. Anthony Benedetto Pizzo, O.S.A.

Gregor Mendel, O.S.A.

David Marshall, O.S.A.
