Dear Friends in Christ, As the year draws to a close and we enter the quiet of winter, I find myself reflecting on how o en God reveals His presence not in grand gestures, but in small, steady signs of love and renewal. The glow of a candle in the chapel, the laughter shared over a community meal, the simple faith of those who pray with us each day: these are the moments that keep the Augustinian heart and mind centered on God. This season always invites gratitude. Gratitude for our friars, who carry the light of the Gospel into their daily lives, parishes, schools, and communities across the province. Gratitude for our benefactors and friends, whose generosity sustains our mission and helps us care for our elderly brothers and form the next generation of Augustinians. And gratitude for the whole Augustinian family, including our affiliates, lay collaborators, and those who join us in living “one mind and one heart intent upon God.” As we look ahead to the coming year, may we continue to be a community of hope. The world around us longs for unity, peace, and compassion and the "Good News" of the Gospel, virtues that St. Augustine himself saw as the fruit of a heart converted by love. My prayer is that each of us may help to build that unity, beginning in our own relationships and extending outward to those most in need.

On behalf of all the Augustinian friars of the Midwest, I wish you a blessed Christmas season and a new year filled with grace, renewal, and peace.

Villanova College Celebrates St. Thomas of Villanova King City, Ontario — Students, faculty, and staff at Villanova College gathered on October 10, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church in King City, Ontario, to celebrate the Feast of St. Thomas of Villanova, the school’s patron, with a Thanksgiving Mass. The liturgy brought together the entire school community in prayer and gratitude, honoring both the saint’s feast day and the national spirit of Thanksgiving.

St. Thomas of Villanova, a 16th-century Augustinian friar and archbishop, is remembered for his deep compassion for the poor and his dedication to education and service.

During the Mass, the Villanova community reflected on these enduring values, which continue to shape the school’s mission and daily life.

Students participated in readings, music, and offertory processions, offering thanks for the blessings of the year and reaffirming their call to live with generosity and purpose. Faculty members also joined in prayerful reflection on how St. Thomas’s example inspires the College’s commitment to forming young people in mind and heart.

As a school centered in Augustinian education, Villanova College continues to draw on the spiritual legacy of St. Thomas of Villanova and the Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love. The celebration served as a reminder that education, faith, and service are not separate callings but part of one shared journey of community and compassion.

Fr. Homero Sánchez, O.S.A., Honored at Archdiocese Gala The Archdiocese of Chicago hosted its 23rd annual Noche de Gala on November 7 at the Chateau Del Mar in Hickory Hills, a celebration recognizing outstanding contributions to Hispanic ministry throughout the Archdiocese.

This year, Fr. Homero Sánchez, O.S.A., pastor of St. Rita of Cascia Parish, was among the evening’s honorees, receiving the Bishop John R. Manz Award for his dedicated pastoral leadership and decades of service to Chicago’s Hispanic Catholic community.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Celebrating Grandparents' Day with Austin Catholic HS In early September 2025, the Austin Catholic High School community gathered for a special Grandparents’ Day Mass, celebrating the faith, love, and wisdom that grandparents bring to family and community life.

More than 90 grandparents joined students, faculty, and staff for the liturgy. The celebration offered

students the opportunity to honor the generations who have supported and guided them, while grandparents shared in the school’s mission of forming young people in faith and service.

The morning concluded with a reception, fostering connection across generations in true Augustinian spirit.

Cascia Hall Pays Special Tribute to September 11th Victims

The Cascia Hall community paid solemn tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001, with a community-wide remembrance on campus.

Students gathered to honor the 2,977 lives lost by placing one flag for each victim on the front lawn of the school — a powerful visual reminder of the enduring impact of that day.

The display invited quiet reflection and prayer for peace, unity, and healing for all who continue to carry the weight of loss.

As the community marked the 24th anniversary of 9/11, students and faculty joined in prayer: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4) 5

AROUND THE PROVINCE Providence Catholic Receives Mural of Pope Leo XIV

Providence Catholic High School proudly unveiled a new painting honoring Pope Leo XIV, created by acclaimed Italian street artist Mauro Pallo a.

Known for his playful and expressive depictions of contemporary figures, Pallo a (o en called Maupal) portrayed Pope Leo engaging in one of his favorite pastimes: playing tennis. The artwork offers a joyful reminder of the Holy Father’s humanity, vitality, and connection to everyday life.

The painting was blessed by Fr. John Merkelis, O.S.A., and other Augustinian brothers during a special ceremony streamed live to classrooms throughout the school during morning prayer. In the days leading up to the event, Providence art students helped prepare the piece for display in the school Commons, where it now hangs as a source of inspiration and pride for the community.

WGN-TV visited campus to film the dedication and featured the story on Pope Leo’s 70th birthday, which was on Sunday, September 14.

The celebration not only honored the Holy Father, but also reflected Providence Catholic’s commitment to creativity, faith, and joyful expression.

RESTLESS Ministry Serves 135 at Friday Night Meal The RESTLESS Outreach Ministry from Sacred Heart Church in King City, Ontario, gathered volunteers and parish partners on October 20th to prepare and serve a homemade meal to those in need. Together, volunteers fed 135 guests with hearty lasagna, fresh vegetables, and snack bags, while also distributing donated pantry items to help support families beyond the meal.

The evening was made possible through the generous efforts of parishioners, friends, and students from Holy Name School and Villanova College, who worked side by side to cook, serve, and share in conversation with guests. The ministry continues to be a vital expression of community care, bringing together people of all ages to meet both material and spiritual needs.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Freshmen Retreat Connects New Ritamen to Legacy The St. Rita of Cascia High School Campus Ministry Team and Augustinians Br. Joe Ruiz, O.S.A., and Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., welcomed the newest class of Ritamen with their annual Freshman Retreat, a tradition designed to introduce students to the school’s Augustinian heritage and community spirit.

Now in its third year, the retreat invites freshmen to journey through the story of St. Rita’s legacy, beginning with a visit to the original high school campus on 63rd and Claremont, where the school first opened its doors in 1905. The day concluded with a special Mass at St. Rita of Cascia Parish, where students joined together in prayer and reflection.

Throughout the day, students learned not only about the school’s history but also about what it means to live out the Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love. By walking in the footsteps of generations

before them, these new Ritamen were reminded that they are part of something larger than themselves: a brotherhood of faith and service that continues to grow with each new class of students.

Caring for Creation Commi ee Receives Community Award St. Bernard Parish’s Caring for Creation Commi ee is a recipient of the 2025 Community and Nature in Harmony Award, recognizing their outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Presented annually by the Village of Homer Glen, the award honors individuals and organizations that promote the preservation, restoration, and beautification of local land while fostering community pride.

St. Bernard’s commi ee was selected for its creative and sustained efforts to care for both people and the planet through a variety of hands-on initiatives.

Over the past year, the group has organized electronics and medical equipment recycling collections, hosted a home energy efficiency seminar, held recycling drives benefiting children in need, and distributed earth-friendly activity books to encourage environmental awareness among young parishioners

The award was presented to a group of parishioners, following National Public Lands Day and Homer Glen Lands Day celebrations. Through their work, the Caring for Creation Commi ee continues to embody the Augustinian call to stewardship and community, reminding all that caring for creation is a shared act of faith, love, and responsibility. www.midwestaugustinians.org

AROUND THE PROVINCE Pilgrimage: Fr. Ray Flores and St. Jude Parishioners Visit Italy

St. Jude parishioners and other members of the Augustinian community joined Fr. Ray Flores, O.S.A., for a spirit-filled pilgrimage to Italy as part of the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, visiting sacred sites central to Augustinian tradition The group recently returned home after their journey that

included prayer, fellowship, and reflection at the Basilica of St. Rita of Cascia (pictured above).

The pilgrimage offered participants the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of St. Augustine and St. Rita, deepening their faith through shared prayer and community along the way.

From Rome to Cascia, pilgrims experienced moments of grace and renewal that will continue to inspire parish life back home.

The St. Jude community gathered to join Fr. Ray and other pilgrimages on October 23, when they shared stories and reflections from the trip.

Mendel Monarchs: Alumni Take a Chicago River Cruise On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the Mendel Catholic Prep Alumni Association hosted “Augustinians on a Boat,” an evening cruise along the Chicago River celebrating the enduring legacy of the Men of Mendel. The Midwest Augustinians were honored guests aboard the Ft. Dearborn Boat, as alumni, families, and friends gathered to reconnect and express gratitude for the friars who shaped generations of students from 1951 to 1988.

Through the generosity of Terry Johnson and Chicago Line Cruises, a endees enjoyed a perfect evening of fellowship, food, and city views.

During the event, Alumni Association President Tom Gavin announced a $5,000 donation to support retired Augustinians who once served at Mendel.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Augustinian Academy (St. Louis) Alumni Golf Outing

It was a picture-perfect day for the annual Augustinian Academy Men's Golf Tournament, one that many called the best in the event’s 35-year history.

One hundred alumni and friends gathered for a day of camaraderie, competition, and gratitude. While Pope Leo XIV was unable to a end in person (“due to the exigencies of office,” as organizers joked), he sent his blessing for good weather and good health—and it worked.

The course was in beautiful shape, and spirits were high as golfers competed in two flights. A Flight champions were Nick Steska ’70, Len Riley ’70, Ed Steska, and Nathan Hamm, while B Flight winners were Jerry Grimaud ’69, Denny Hopmann ’69, Harry Schillinger, and George Ferre i. Bill Dolan claimed the longest drive, and Charlie Pfeil ’73 earned closest to the pin, each winning dinner for two at Sam’s Steakhouse.

The event also featured generous

contributions from alumni and local businesses, including brats from R & W Meats, beverages from Friendly’s, and raffle prizes from area restaurants.

Special thanks were extended to the organizing commi ee and longtime supporters who have made this tournament a cherished annual tradition.

Plans for next year’s event and the annual Christmas raffle will be announced soon.

Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A., Made Spiritual Guide to Foundation On October 26, Prior Provincial Fr. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. was appointed as Quinquennium Spiritual Guide for the Antonio Emanuele Augurusa Foundation.

During a special ceremony held at Our Lady of Pompeii in Chicago, Foundation President Francesco Augurusa presented Fr. Tony with the Le er of Appointment and the Foundation's Spiritual Discernment Program. Fr. Tony will hold this position for five years as he accompanies the foundation with discernment and planning.

The Augurusa Foundation is an Italian non-profit that aims to combat poverty and inequality through education, social inclusion, culture, and sustainability. It was founded in memory of Antonio Emanuele Augurusa, a young boy who died in 1998.

AROUND THE PROVINCE Cascia Hall Faculty Member and “Auggie the Bulldog” Represent Tulsa in Rome

by Andrea Chapman Charlie Mitton, Cascia Hall theology faculty, and Auggie the bulldog recently returned from an inspiring time in Rome, where Mrs. Mitton presented at the Refugees & Migrants in Our Common Home: Mobilizing Academic Communities for Action Conference. Wanting a fun way to share her trip on social media, Mrs. Mitton took Auggie the stuffed bulldog, Cascia’s mascot, along for the adventure.

Their journey began with a walk through historic Rome, where they visited San Nicola da Tolentino agli Orti Sallustiani, a church built for the Augustinians in 1599 and now one of the Roman national churches of Armenia. The pair admired its remarkable altar depicting Saint Augustine and Saint Monica, and its frescoed cupola symbolizing the Augustinian virtues of chastity, humility, poverty, and obedience.

Highlights of the week included a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, a visit 10

to Borgo Laudato Si’ at Castel Gandolfo, and time spent exploring several Augustinian churches — San Luigi dei Francesi, Basilica di Sant’Agostino, and Santa Maria del Popolo. At the altar of Saint Rita, Mrs. Mitton lit two candles — one for the needs and intentions of current Cascia Hall students and another for alumni.

Conference sessions brought together educators and scholars from around the world. Mrs. Mitton presented a Lightning Talk titled “Aware Students Become Active College Students,” and later shared her poster presentation, “The Time is Now: Catholic Education and the Formation of Lifelong Service.” Her research examines how Augustinian and Jesuit high schools foster awareness through service and how these experiences shape a lifelong commitment to justice.

One particularly memorable moment came when Mrs. Mitton and Auggie attended a private papal audience, where gifts from Cascia The Midwest Augustinian

Hall were presented to Pope Leo. Upon returning to Tulsa, Mrs. Mitton reflected, “Pope Leo reminded us that a culture of experience is how we as a community can confront powerlessness and indifference. The fostering of hope will carry on through the action plans and my service at Cascia Hall.” The conference serves as a powerful reminder of how faith, learning, and service unite our global Catholic community. The gathering launched a multi-year initiative promoting collaboration among educators, students, and community partners worldwide.

As the project continues, Mrs. Mitton invites the Cascia Hall and the Augustinian community as a whole to join in caring for our common home and our neighbors— living out the call to faith through concrete acts of awareness, service, and justice.

AROUND THE PROVINCE St. Rita High School’s Day of the Dead Celebration

by Andrew Mario i Our Spanish Club and classes celebrated Day of the Dead by creating meaningful tributes that honor loved ones, heroes, and the rich traditions of Hispanic culture.

In the weeks leading up to our annual celebration, our Spanish Club and classes have been learning about one of the most important elements of Day of the Dead, the ofrenda, also known as a decorative altar. Ofrendas are created to welcome and honor the souls of loved ones who are believed to return for a visit. They serve as a personal and visual tribute, bridging the world of the living with that of the dead.

Our Spanish Club prepared their annual St. Rita ofrenda. Every year, students, faculty, and staff place photographs of their deceased loved ones on the ofrenda for our St. Rita Family to remember. The club also created beautiful monarch bu erflies, which symbolize the spirits of deceased relatives returning

to visit. These bu erflies migrate every October from the midwest of the U.S.A. to a forest in Michoacán, Mexico, arriving at the same time Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico on November 1. Therefore, our bu erflies start on the second floor heading south and arrive at our Day of the Dead ofrenda outside of our Dining Hall.

In Mr. Bogucki’s Spanish 1 classes, our Ritamen have been learning about ofrendas with a unique focus on honoring fallen heroes. Each of his classes created an ofrenda in honor of fallen members of the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Fire Department, and the armed services from Illinois. Each Ritaman chose a fallen hero to honor by making a bu erfly cutout to be placed on the ofrenda. Our Ritamen also created papel picado (cut tissue paper designs), calaveras (sugar skulls), and made tissue paper flowers to decorate the ofrendas.

Next, Mrs. Earley’s Spanish Four Honors class learned about seven distinctive artistic styles by artists www.midwestaugustinians.org

from Spain, Mexico, and Columbia, including Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Diego Rivera, Fernando Botero, and Salvador Dalí. Our Ritamen then chose one symbol that represents the Day of the Dead and illustrated that symbol in any four of the seven artist distinctive styles. Some of the symbols they chose were a candle, tombstone, bu erfly, cross, and skull (calavera).

Students in Mrs. Earley’s AP Spanish Language and Culture class deepened their understanding of Day of the Dead through an educational visit to the National Museum of Mexican Art. Our Ritamen enjoyed the ofrendas, exhibits, as well as the beautiful murals across many of the buildings in the Pilsen neighborhood.

The day concluded with lunch at The Frida Room.

Through these activities and celebrations, our Ritamen embraced the rich traditions of Day of the Dead, honoring the past while deepening their appreciation for Hispanic culture and community.

ALS Walk for Life: Community Blessings at Soldier Field On September 20, the Midwest Augustinians, led by Fr. Jim Halstead, O.S.A., took part in the Les Turner ALS Walk for Life at Soldier Field in Chicago.

ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive muscle atrophy and stiffness, difficulty with breathing and speech, and cognitive changes.

Organized by the Les Turner ALS Foundation, the Walk for Life brings the community together to raise funds and awareness for those living with ALS, including our own Fr. Jim Halstead.

Fr. Jim has lived with ALS for several years and participated in the walk, along with Br. Nick Mullarkey, O.S.A., Br. Javier Medina, O.S.A., and others, including friends from DePaul University, St. Nicholas Church, the St. Augustine Seminary Alumni group.

Local news channel ABC7 Chicago interviewed Fr. Jim, during which he reflected on his life and ministry over several decades and commented on his gratitude to Pope Leo for agreeing to speak at the event. He acknowledged how the Pope’s message (which Fr. Jim helped to cra ) underscored the need for hope and community among those living with ALS and in society as a whole. “A er the craziness that we live most of our lives in right now in this country,” he said, “to see that much goodness and that much care … that moved me greatly.”

Pope Leo XIV offered a personal message of encouragement to participants in the walk. The Holy Father expressed gratitude to several groups: to the researchers and scientists of the Les Turner ALS Foundation, who are working to cure the disease; to the caregivers who help manage and alleviate symptoms of the disease; and to those living with ALS themselves, whose inspirational stories of perseverance and hope remind us that the "quality of our lives is dependent on love. In your suffering, you can experience a depth of human love previously unknown. You can grow in gratefulness for all that has 12

been given and for all the people who are caring for you now. You can develop a profound sense of the beauty of creation, of life in this world, and of the mystery of love."

The Pope’s words, shared publicly during the walk, became a moment of unity between the local Church and others present at the event.

The Walk for Life this year was a fundraising success, raising almost $50,000 more than its stated goal of $620,000. In addition to the fundraising efforts, a highlight of the The Midwest Augustinian

event each year is the March of Faces, where family and friends are invited to honor their loved ones living with ALS by including their photos on a banner, which will travel to ALS awareness events around the world.

The walk also featured music and other entertainment to help draw the community together for the occasion.

An Evening with the Augustinians at Cascia Hall & The Polo Grill On Sunday, November 9, the Midwest Augustinian community gathered for a day-long celebration of faith, friends, family, and Augustinian tradition.

The day started with Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A., celebrating Mass at Cascia Hall Preparatory School's St. Rita Chapel and ended with a reception and dinner at one of Tulsa's top restaurants, the Polo Grill, which is owned by longtime Augustinian supporters and event sponsors Chef Robert Merrifield and Donna Merrifield.

The evening's selections of fine wines were sponsored by Ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Rooney, and the event's hosts were Tony and Phyllis Lauinger, Margaret and Brian Reimann, and David and Lisa Vaughan.

Community and Communion at the General Chapter in Rome In September, Augustinians from around the globe gathered at St. Monica’s College and the Augustinian Cura across from St. Peter’s Square in Rome. They came together for the General Chapter, a time of confraternity and contemplation that comes about only once every six years. Over two and a half weeks, friars representing every Augustinian territory came together to deliberate on the order’s mission in light of contemporary challenges.

Prior Provincial Fr. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A., and Province Secretary, Br. Nicholas Mullarkey, O.S.A., represented the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel during the proceedings.

On the first day of the chapter, Pope Leo XIV joined the community for an opening Mass at St. Augustine’s Church, followed by individual greetings and a special dinner with his brother Augustinians. In his homily, he enjoined everyone to “Live these days… in a sincere effort to communicate and to understand, and do so as a generous response to the great and unique gi of light and grace that the Father of 14

Heaven gives you by summoning you here, specifically you, for the good of all.”

Daily sessions were marked by communal prayer and celebration of the Eucharist. Reports from each continent were translated from Italian, Spanish, or English in real time. They highlighted shared pastoral priorities — education, youth ministry, and the pursuit of human dignity in keeping with Catholic social teaching — and the distinctive realities of Augustinian

life in varied cultural contexts. They also reinforced the community’s need to bolster vocational outreach and formational training to reach younger generations.

On September 9, delegates elected Fr. Joseph Lawrence Farrell as the 98th Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine, which he will lead for six years. A member of the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova, Fr. Joe professed solemn vows as an Augustinian in 1990 and

was ordained a priest in 1991. Among several other degrees, he has held his Doctorate in Sacred Theology since 2007. He has served as Vicar General of the Augustinians since 2013 and earned a Master of Science in Church Management from Villanova University in 2019. “We raise our prayers of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for the gi of the new Prior General,” said P. Pasquale di Lernia, O.S.A., Secretary of the Chapter, “and ask that every blessing and divine grace be extended to him so that he may fulfil his service in a spirit of love and wisdom for the Church and for his brothers.”

Delegates also elected the new General Council, selecting Fr. Alexander Lam (Province of Peru) as Vicar General.

Kevin DePrinzio (Province of Villanova), Fr. Martin Davakan (Province of Belgium), Fr. Frederick Comendador (Province of Cebu, Philippines), Fr. James Wambugu (Delegation of Kenya), and Fr. down a er twelve years of service as Assistant General and twelve more as Prior General, as well as the Order for its ongoing service to the Church. He also spoke about interiority as being key to ministry. A er an opportunity to dialogue, the Pope gave everyone an apostolic blessing, and chapter members were invited to meet him individually before a special birthday lunch. His visit was a reminder to the friars that their work of accompanying the faithful — especially young faithful in need of formation — remains vital to the Church’s future.

The final days of the Chapter were spent deliberating on many official proposals, 39 of which were put to a final vote. A er a Mass of Thanksgiving and a festive lunch, the results confirmed that all the proposals had passed. The General Chapter officially concluded a er the closing prayer on September 18.

As the Midwest Province reflects on the Chapter’s outcomes, we join in thanksgiving for the grace of these days in Rome — for the fraternity shared, the guidance received, and the ongoing call to serve with humility and joy.

P E RU V I A N V I C A R I AT E U P DAT E S Augustinians in Peru Welcome Visitors for Faith and History In early October, the Augustinians in Peru opened their doors to more than twenty visitors for a special historical and spiritual tour of the parish and convent where Pope Leo XIV worked and lived. The event offered guests a unique opportunity to experience the living heritage of the Augustinians in Peru where faith, culture, and community continue to thrive.

Participants explored the historic cloisters that once hosted the future pope during his time as an Augustinian missionary from Chicago. Throughout the tour, Fr. Jorge Martínez Vizueta, O.S.A., shared stories of Augustinian service, education, and the spiritual formation that have shaped the Augustinian presence in the region.

Visitors had an opportunity to reflect on the enduring call to live in community, to serve others, and to seek God "restlessly" together.

The a ernoon concluded on a lighter note, with guests enjoying “Pizza Leone,” the Pope’s favorite pizza recipe, prepared by local volunteers.

The gathering, organized by the Fr. Juan McKniff, O.S.A. Office of Development was a joyful blend of history, faith, and friendship.

This initiative reflects the Augustinians’ ongoing work in Peru of connecting people to the Order’s spiritual and cultural legacy.

Celebrating the Priestly Ordination of Fr. Antonio Carrasco

In early October, the Augustinian Vicariate of San Juan de Sahagún de Chulucanas in Peru celebrated the ordination of Fr. Antonio Carrasco Carrasco, O.S.A. to the priesthood.

Surrounded by family, friends, and fellow Augustinians, Fr. Antonio was ordained to the priesthood in a liturgy that reflected his years of dedication, formation, and faithful discernment within the Order.

Fr. Antonio has served the Augustinian family with humility and joy, guided by a spirit of service and love for the Gospel. His ordination

marks the beginning of a new chapter of ministry.

Throughout the celebration, prayers of gratitude and hope filled the air as the faithful gave thanks for Fr. Antonio’s generous “yes” to God’s call. His example reminds all of the enduring vitality of Augustinian life and the importance of responding to the needs of the Churc.

We join the entire Augustinian family in congratulating Fr. Antonio and praying that the Lord continue to guide, strengthen, and bless him.

65 Year Anniversary of Colegio Señor de los Milagros in Peru This year marks the 65th Anniversary of Colegio Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles School), a school currently administered by Augustinians of the Vicariate of San Juan de Sahagún de Chulucanas in Pacasmaya, Peru.

During this anniversary year, the school has been celebrating with prayer services, award ceremonies, concerts with local musicians and dancing, parades throughout local streets, and other joyful events. The whole Augustinian community and local community has been participating in the festivities.

Standing with Migrants and Refugees in Faith and Solidarity From September 22 to 28, the Church in the United States observed National Migration Week as a time to pray, reflect, and act on behalf of migrants, refugees, and all those forced to seek new beginnings away from their homes. The week usually coincides with the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, but this year it was moved to October 4 through 5 to correspond with the Jubilee of Migrants.

Before his passing, Pope Francis selected the theme “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope.” The USCCB noted that “National Migrant Week invites Catholics across the country to reflect on how hope can shape and inform our collective response to migration.” Pope Leo XIV also spoke on this important topic, stating: "In a world darkened by war and injustice, even when all seems lost, migrants and refugees stand as messengers of hope. Their courage and tenacity bear heroic testimony to a faith that sees beyond what our eyes can see and gives them the strength to defy death on the various contemporary migration routes… In a special way, Catholic migrants and refugees can become missionaries of hope in the countries that welcome them, forging new paths of faith where the message of Jesus Christ has not yet arrived or initiating interreligious dialogue based on everyday life and the search for common values."

Midwest Augustinians and their high school and parish ministries joined Catholic communities nationwide in highlighting the Church’s consistent teaching on human dignity and the right to hospitality. Echoing the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ theme of “Welcoming Christ in Each Person,” the Province reaffirmed its commitment to accompany migrants through prayer and practical support.

topic but as a human reality that calls for empathy and concrete action. A highlight was a webinar hosted by Loyola University, where Fr. John Lydon, O.S.A., Director of Formation for the Federation of Augustinians of North America (FANA), offered a presentation titled Migration and Human Dignity in the Thought of Pope Leo XIV. Drawing from the Pope’s pastoral experiences among the poor and displaced, Fr. John reflected on the moral demands of solidarity and the hope that flows from faith-filled encounter.

In parishes and schools, Augustinians encouraged the faithful to listen to migrants’ stories and to see the image of Christ in each face.

Across the province, Augustinians have launched and are supporting several initiatives to care for the migrant community. Parishes have launched emergency food pantries in inter-faith partnerships with organizations to offer food items to families most impacted by recent immigration enforcement.

Our Augustinian parishes aren't the only ones in the Archdiocese of Chicago who are working around the clock to care for the human dignity of migrants. Many others are scrambling to provide responses to recent changes The Midwest Augustinian

in immigration policy enforcement, including trainings and seminars about legal rights and due process.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, released a statement on October 14th, saying, "the safety of a nation cannot come at the expense of violations of human dignity." He continued to decry the rise in "unnecessarily aggressive tactics that go far beyond the task of apprehending people."

The Order’s long history of ministry among the marginalized — highlighted in particular this year by Pope Leo’s service in Peru before his election — lent special depth to this year’s reflections and current events.

Prayer resources and educational materials offered by the USCCB and by local communities helped the faithful connect global realities to local witness, from welcoming families to parish life to supporting advocacy for humane immigration reform.

As the week concluded, the Province invited all who share in Augustinian spirituality to continue this mission beyond designated observances: to make space in our communities, hearts, and institutions for those seeking refuge.

"The Search for God in Community" Augustinian Spirituality with Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A. Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A., an Augustinian friar and priest from Joliet, Illinois, reflects on growing up in an Augustinian environment, his call to religious life, and how he lives out Augustinian spirituality today.

Q: Father Sam, could you start by introducing yourself and sharing how you were first called to religious life?

I'm Fr. Sam Joutras, I am a Midwest Augustinian priest, four years ordained.

I’m from Joliet, Illinois, which is about 45 minutes south of Chicago. So not too far. My family lives there—my mom, my dad, and my one sister live there.

I think I was very blessed to be a part of an Augustinian parish growing up. I was part of St. Jude in New Lenox, and also I was part of an Augustinian high school, Providence Catholic. So in those formative years, I was kind of growing up with the Augustinians, I guess you could say, in an Augustinian environment. My family was very involved in the parish, and I really enjoyed going to Providence.

During this time, I really felt the call to the priesthood, even though I really didn’t want to look at it too much.

But I did feel the call nonetheless.

When I went to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, when I was a junior, I kind of mustered up the courage to talk to Father Tom McCarthy, who’s our vocation director.

And it was then that we started talking, and I started to get to know the Augustinians at a deeper level, visiting particularly St. Rita High School and Providence, especially for the novenas to St. Rita.

And then when I was a senior in college, I applied. And so I entered the Augustinians, August 2014. And I look back and it’s been a blessing. Thanks be to God. Q: You talk about growing up with the Augustinians. What was your first experience of Augustinian spirituality?

I remember one Sunday at Mass, maybe I was six, seven, I don’t really remember the age, but I do remember The Midwest Augustinian

quite a beautiful experience. When I was kneeling there in Mass, I suddenly started to feel this kind of a pull during the consecration at Mass. And I think that was my first experience of Augustinian spirituality.

The quote that St. Augustine is kind of always quoted for: “You pierced my heart with Your Word, and I fell in love with You.” I think it was that first moment when I was very young.

Something from outside of me, it was not me, was kind of calling, kind of pulling in a li le way.

That was a grace, I think, and I’m very grateful for that because I don’t think that ever le me.

I'd say that was maybe my first experience of "the restless heart," of being aware that something outside of me was calling, that God was with me, even if I really didn’t recognize God’s presence, even if I really was not aware of what was going on.

You know, St. Augustine says, “You were with me, but I was not with You.” It was kind of that experience of, as I look back now, that first li le inkling that maybe God was calling me in a unique way.

Q: And as you grew older, how did that sense of spirituality continue to develop?

I’m very grateful for my parents, that they always brought us to Mass.

It was always a constant thing, they were very involved in the parish. I’m very grateful for that, because I think another part of Augustinian spirituality is just that constant continued perseverance, recognizing that God is with us, even if you might not feel like going one Sunday, He’s there.

Learning about St. Augustine in high school was another one, to kind of put a face to this saint who really searched for God, even if he was not aware that what he was searching for was actually God. Learning about his story was quite a powerful experience for me. St. Augustine was the first saint, maybe apart from Mary and Joseph, that I actually learned about. And so that was a special experience.

Once I entered the Augustinians, it was just new experiences that showed me how in everyone’s life, God is truly working.

Just this morning, I had a funeral, and it was very sad, of course. I actually knew the person from bringing her Communion.

a wedding, a joyful occasion, funerals, daily Mass. Just that constant recognition 'I need the Lord as I begin the day.' All of these experiences, through formation and now into active community life here, I’m so grateful that continued Augustinian spirituality that has taken root in me.

Q: When you entered religious life, did community life turn out how you expected?

That’s a very good question that I don’t think anyone has ever asked me before.

When we are thinking about a vocation, whether it’s married life or religious life, there’s always that ideal vision that we have. I think the expectation on my part was who others would be. I think the expectation on my part did not take into account how much work community life is, how humbling it is, how much work it takes from each member to be an Augustinian community. Once I joined the Augustinians, I saw how we are all so different, and how the Lord, in a unique way, called each of us to the Augustinians. That realization for me was very powerful: to see how great the need is to accept everyone and to really value, to come to be friends, and to try to love everyone.

My journey in Augustinian life has been learning to accept myself and others, with all of our strengths and weaknesses, and to somehow find God in all of it.

And it was very sad because I saw just how much love was there on the part of the family. But what was encouraging and quite powerful at the same time was the faith that was there.

And so I saw that even in the midst of this sadness, the Lord was giving them the great gi of faith.

It’s all these li le times when I’ve seen God’s presence calling us all to the Eucharist for different experiences,

Q: How would you describe Augustinian spirituality in a few words?

Augustinian spirituality can be described in such broad terms, but if I had to describe it in just a few, I would say that it is the search for God in community.

I was once told that St. Francis, when he started beginning his movement, said, “I began living the www.midwestaugustinians.org

Gospel, and then the Lord gave me brothers.” But it’s totally different for St. Augustine. St. Augustine found that the search for God could only be done with his brothers. And so I think that this active search for God can only be done in community. That’s why I say: the search for God through community.

Q: What advice would you give someone who wants to go deeper in that spirituality?

I would encourage anyone who is thinking about going deeper in Augustinian spirituality to first be aware of how God is tugging at your heart, because I think that’s where it all begins.

Second, I would say that reading is a great help in learning about St. Augustine. There are many resources on our province websites, as well as a website called AugustinianSpirituality. org, which was begun by Fr. Jeremy Hiers from the Villanova Province.

It’s not only about the heart but about the union of the heart and the mind. So, reading, prayer, continuing to receive the Eucharist, being present in the faith practices of the Church.

That’s very important. Living this faith in community is probably the most important thing we can do.

If it’s possible, come to an Augustinian place: a parish, a school, anywhere where there might be Augustinians. If it’s not possible because of distance or whatever it may be, the Office of Lay Engagement, through the Midwest Province, run by Maryellen Harrington, who has many different programs, Friends of Augustine is one.

Ge ing in contact with Maryellen can really open one’s resources, not only in terms of books and materials and retreats but also just personal relationships, ge ing to know other people who are on that same journey.

Q: Any final reflections?

My vocation has been greater than my expectations. I really did not know what to expect. But I’ve seen how God works in everyone’s life, through community, through love, and for that, I’m very grateful.

On Thursday, November 13, the Midwest Augustinians gathered at St. Jude Parish in New Lenox for a Mass of Thanksgiving honoring Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., and for the Affiliation Ceremony welcoming thirteen new members into the extended Augustinian family.

The evening brought together friars, sisters, lay collaborators, family, and friends whose lives have been shaped by Augustinian ministry. The liturgy—celebrated in the church where many vocations to the Order have been nurtured—was filled with gratitude for the life and witness of Pope Leo XIV, whose own journey from the Midwest Province to the papacy embodies the Augustinian call to serve the universal Church “with one mind and one heart, intent upon God.” During the celebration, the 22

As the Province celebrated both the Holy Father’s Augustinian roots and the dedication of these new companions in mission, the evening stood as a vivid expression of the Order’s enduring conviction: that God’s love is best discovered and shared within community.

Volunteer organize food for St. Rita's Food Pantry

Living Out Our Catholic Call to Serve the Marginalized In his recent apostolic exhortation, Dilexi te, Pope Leo XIV, our Augustinian brother, issued a call for the Church to deepen its service to the poor and vulnerable.

He emphasized the Church’s “preferential love for the poor” and placed it in context of today’s pressing social needs, from educating the poor and caring for the sick to freeing prisoners and welcoming migrants and refugees.

“We ourselves need to see,” Pope Leo said, “and then to enable others to see, that migrants and refugees do not only represent a problem to be solved, but are brothers and sisters to be welcomed, respected, and loved.”

As Church social doctrine has emerged over the past two centuries of industrialization, the Christian call to care for the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of those on the margins has become a broader conversation of “modern social, labor, economic and cultural issues.” Through it all, the Augustinian mission to serve others in unity, truth, and love while in community has remained the same.

For the Augustinians in the Midwest, these words find a concrete home in many places, including at St. Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago. Among many parish initiatives is the Immigrant Social Ministry (Pastoral Migratoria), which is “empowering Hispanic and Polish immigrant lay leaders through service, accompaniment, and justice actions in

parishes.” Their efforts include hosting “Know Your Rights” sessions, collecting items for people in detention centers, and providing information on health care programs in Illinois.

Through such efforts, St. Rita's Parish leadership exemplifies how the theology of Dilexi te becomes pastoral practice — treating those on the margins as persons with inherent human dignity, as the Gospel urges.

Dilexi te affirms that faith must translate into action on behalf of those who are downtrodden. In the Midwest Augustinian community, ministries like Pastoral Migratoria are not optional extras but are ministries central to our Augustinian charism. Meet Amy Granat, New Accountant for the Midwest Augustinians The Midwest Augustinians are thrilled to welcome Amy Granat as the newest member of our staff. In her new role as an Accountant for the Augustinians, she will support the Province's financial operations and assist Patrick Griffin, Director of Finance.

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Amy brings a lifelong grounding in hard work and community to her new role. As the daughter of a Chicago firefighter who was also a small business owner, Amy grew up watching her family collaborate to build Midway Tree Service together, from the back of their family's truck.

While Amy was in grammar school, her mother taught her how to help with the business' filing duties, and by the time high school came around, Amy was handling invoices and finding her footing early in organization and numbers.

A er earning her degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University, Amy taught for several years before pursuing a master’s in School Counseling at Concordia University.

While raising her three children— Carmela (12), Eddie (10), and Franco (6)—she re-discovered her talent for accounting through part-time work for a local firm and later as Executive Director of the Midway Chamber of Commerce.

When a friend connected her to the Augustinians, Amy quickly found both meaningful work and a sense of belonging. “It’s funny how God works,”

she says. “I never thought I’d be here— but every step, even the unexpected ones, was leading to this.”

Amy describes her new role as “a blessing I didn’t know I needed,” and appreciates the supportive, humancentered culture of her colleagues.

“Everyone here is kind, humble, and genuinely working for others. It reminds me daily that God has a plan.”

Province Commemorates All Souls Day with Prayer Service On Sunday, November 2, the Midwest Augustinians gathered at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois, to commemorate All Souls Day with a prayer service honoring deceased friars, family members, and friends. The a ernoon gathering drew members of the Augustinian community, parishioners, and loved ones for a time of reflection, remembrance, and gratitude.

The service included the recitation of the Rosary and special prayers for the departed, led by members of the Province. A highlight of the day was the blessing of a newly installed monument at the cemetery, dedicated to the memory of those who have faithfully served and shared in the Augustinian mission.

Faith, Friendship, and the Quiet Work of Grace A Partic ipant's Reflection About the Men's Retreat

by Thomas Liberti My name is Thomas. I ended up at the 2025 Men’s Retreat because someone else cancelled — and I’m convinced that was God answering prayers I hadn’t even spoken out loud.

I’d been looking for something to draw me closer to Him, and suddenly the door opened.

One of the first things that stood out to me was the sense of brotherhood. I’m a Knight of Columbus, so fraternity isn’t new to me — it’s something I’m already fortunate to experience. But this retreat awakened that spirit on a deeper, more personal level. The last time I felt this kind of all-male camaraderie was back in high school. I went to De La Salle, an allmale school, and the atmosphere here brought me right back — and I mean that in the best way possible.

The easy laughter, the honesty, the way guys naturally support one another… it felt familiar, grounding, and really good for the soul.

The camaraderie grew quickly.

We connected. We talked, joked, and opened up. I left with about ten new phone numbers — men I truly hope will stay in touch in the years to come.

The retreat gave me the space and encouragement to open up in

ways I normally don’t. We men tend to keep our feelings locked tight, but the small groups were powerful and surprisingly emotional. More than once, many of us found ourselves in tears. Two of the witness talks hit so close to home that they could’ve been my own story.

And then there was Br. David. His singing and piano playing felt like pure gi s from God. My eyes welled up listening to him — it was the kind of music that touches deep places you didn’t realize needed healing.

The quiet moments ma ered just as much. The campus is beautiful, and I spent time walking alone and

with some of the new friends I had made. The closing hugs were simple, but incredibly comforting — a gentle, meaningful way to say goodbye.

This was my first retreat since high school, and it awakened something deep within me. I felt a renewed calling to serve the Lord with greater purpose. I le the weekend certain of one thing: I want to return next year — same time, God willing.

For me, this retreat wasn’t just a weekend away. It was God’s way of drawing me closer, reminding me that I’m not walking this journey alone, and opening my heart in unexpected ways.

Qualified Charitable Distribution (IRA) - If you are 70 ½ and older, you can take advantage of a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) also known as charitable IRA rollover. The most an individual can donate tax-free in one year to all charities is $108,000 and if married, your spouse can also donate that amount tax free.

Gi Bunching - Consider combining multiple years of giving into 2025 to exceed the standard deduction threshold and maximize your tax benefits while providing stronger support for the Augustinians.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) - If you are concerned about donating a large amount at once, consider using a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) to bunch your charitable gi s. You can front-load a large donation to your DAF in 2025 and receive a tax deduction now while gi ing donations to charities like ours over future years as you desire. This allows you to sustain your charitable impact and maximize your tax benefits.

Key Federal Tax Changes Effective January 1, 2026 Starting in 2026, several federal tax law changes will take place that may impact the deductibility and timing of your donations.

• New Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) Floor Changes - The first 0.5% of your charitable giving will no longer be deductible. In 2025, every dollar donated (up to normal IRS limits) is deductible.

• Universal Deduction for Non-Itemizers - In 2026, non-itemizers can deduct up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.

This deduction is not available in 2025. This does not apply to gi s to donoradvised funds or private foundations.

• Reduced Value for Top Tax Bracket Donors - Tax savings for those in the 37% tax bracket will be slightly lower. Charitable deductions will only offset tax at a 35% rate. For example, a $10,000 gi that currently provides $3,700 tax savings, in 2026 the savings would be limited to $3,500. This will have a greater impact on larger donations.

Sister Sylvia Puchoras, SSC, born on July 1, 1941, passed away on November 7, 2025, at the age of 84.

A devoted member of the Sisters of St. Casimir for 63 years, Sister Sylvia professed vows on August 15, 1962, and dedicated her life to prayer, service, and community. Known for her quiet strength, compassion, and deep faith, she embodied the spirit of her congregation through her care for others and steadfast commitment to the Gospel. Sister Sylvia’s life was a witness to love in action and joyful fidelity to her vocation. May she rest now in the eternal peace of Christ whom she served so faithfully.

Margaret “Peg” Olson, Affiliate, born on July 15, 1939, passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 86. Affiliated to the Augustinian Order in 2000, Peg was a devoted friend of Bishop McNabb and a generous supporter of the Chulucanas mission in Peru. A lifelong Chicagoan until her move to Florida in 2023, she spent 32 years as a Chicago Public Schools math teacher and later served more than two decades as a trustee of the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund. Known for her booming laugh, boundless generosity, and love of family, Peg embraced life with humor, faith, and joy. She will be fondly remembered for her spirited presence and her heart of gold.

Irene Ann Nowak, mother of former Pre-Novice Andy Nowak, passed away on August 18, 2025. She was 89 years old.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Irene was devoted to her faith, family, and community. She shared 35 years with her “Meaden Screw Products family” and remained active in parish life, volunteering at St. Camillus and St. Andrew’s food pantries. She also co-founded Hearts & Hands, supporting families in need. Irene’s generosity, humor, and love of Polish traditions brought joy to all who knew her. Her zest for life—expressed in good food, laughter, and faith—leaves a legacy of compassion and gratitude for a life well and joyfully lived.

Fr. Kevin Francis Dwyer, O.S.A., born on April 18, 1936, passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 89. A native of Boston, Fr. Kevin entered the Augustinian Order in 1954, professed solemn vows in 1958, and was ordained in 1962. For more than four decades he served at Merrimack College, where he chaired the Department of Religious and Theological Studies and inspired generations of students with his wisdom and faith. Remembered for his scholarship, kindness, and deep commitment to education, Fr. Kevin’s life reflected the Augustinian call to seek truth in charity. He leaves a legacy of faith-filled teaching and joyful service to the Church and the Order.

Thomas J. Maroney, J.D., former Augustinian student, passed away on August 30, 2025, at the age of 68. A graduate of St. Augustine Seminary (’74) and Villanova University (’78), Thomas was a member of the Augustinian formation program during his years at Villanova. He went on to earn his law degree from DePaul University and served for more than 30 years as a Cook County Public Defender, remembered for his dedication to justice and compassion for others. Thomas’ life reflected a deep sense of service and integrity rooted in his Augustinian formation. He will be remembered for his faith, devotion to family, and lifelong commitment to helping those in need.

Sister Juline Revas, SSC, passed away on October 4, 2025, at the age of 86. A beloved member of the Sisters of St. Casimir for 64 years, Sister Juline served faithfully as both educator and nurse. She taught in schools across Illinois, New Mexico, and Massachuse s before devoting many years to Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago, where she later served as Director of Nursing and Vice President. Her life of service reflected the compassion and dedication of her community’s charism.

Sister Juline will be remembered for her gentle spirit, deep faith, and lifelong commitment to healing and education in the name of Christ.

Leopoldo Herrera, great-grandfather of Manny Toledo, passed away on Sunday, October 12th. Manny is a live-in discerner at St. Clare Friary in Chicago. Leopoldo was 93 years old. The funeral will be held in Mexico. Pease keep Leopoldo, Manny, and their family in your prayers.

Carta del prior provincial El Muy Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. Queridos amigos en Cristo: A medida que el año llega a su fin y entramos en la tranquilidad del invierno, me encuentro reflexionando sobre cuántas veces Dios revela su presencia no con grandes gestos, sino con pequeños y constantes signos de amor y renovación. El resplandor de una vela en la capilla, las risas compartidas durante una comida comunitaria, la fe sencilla de quienes rezan con nosotros cada día: estos son los momentos que mantienen vivo el corazón agustino y centrado en Dios.

Esta temporada siempre invita a la gratitud. Gratitud por nuestros frailes, que llevan la luz del Evangelio a su vida cotidiana, a las parroquias, a las escuelas y a las comunidades de toda la provincia. Agradecimiento por nuestros benefactores y amigos, cuya generosidad sostiene nuestra misión y nos ayuda a cuidar de nuestros hermanos mayores y a formar a la próxima generación de agustinos. Y agradecimiento por toda la familia agustina, incluidos nuestros afiliados, colaboradores laicos y aquellos que se unen a nosotros para vivir en «un corazón y un alma puestos en Dios».

Al mirar hacia el año que viene, que sigamos siendo una comunidad de esperanza. Apoyando a los migrantes y refugiados con fe y solidaridad Del 22 al 28 de septiembre, la Iglesia en Estados Unidos celebró la Semana Nacional de la Migración haciendo tiempo para orar, reflexionar y actuar en nombre de los migrantes, los refugiados y todos aquellos que se ven obligados a buscar un nuevo comienzo lejos de sus hogares. La semana suele coincidir con el Día Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado, pero este año se cambió al 4 y 5 de octubre para que coincidiera con el Jubileo de los Migrantes.

Antes de su fallecimiento, el papa Francisco eligió el tema «Migrantes, Misioneros de Esperanza». La USCCB señaló que «la Semana Nacional de los Migrantes invita a los católicos de todo el país a reflexionar sobre cómo la esperanza puede moldear e informar nuestra respuesta colectiva a la migración». El papa León XIV también se pronunció sobre este importante tema, afirmando: «En un mundo oscurecido por guerras e injusticias, incluso allí donde todo parece perdido, los migrantes y refugiados se erigen como mensajeros de esperanza. Su valentía y tenacidad son un testimonio heroico de una fe que ve más allá de lo que nuestros ojos pueden ver y que les da la fuerza para desafiar la muerte en las diferentes rutas migratorias contemporáneas.... De manera particular, los migrantes y refugiados católicos pueden convertirse hoy en misioneros de esperanza en los países que los acogen, llevando adelante nuevos caminos de fe allí donde el mensaje de Jesucristo aún no ha llegado o iniciando diálogos interreligiosos basados en la vida cotidiana y la búsqueda de valores comunes».

Los Agustinos del Medio Oeste y sus ministerios parroquiales y de secundaria se unieron a las comunidades católicas de todo el país para destacar la enseñanza constante de la Iglesia sobre la dignidad humana y el derecho a la hospitalidad. Haciéndose eco del lema de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos «Acoger a Cristo en cada persona», la Provincia reafirmó su compromiso de acompañar a los migrantes a través de la oración y el apoyo práctico.

Uno de los momentos más destacados fue un seminario web organizado por la Universidad de Loyola, en el que el P. John Lydon, O.S.A., director de formación de la Federación de Agustinos de América del Norte (FANA por sus siglas en inglés), ofreció una presentación titulada: La migración y la dignidad humana en el pensamiento del papa León XIV. Basándose en las experiencias pastorales del papa entre los pobres y los desplazados, el P. John reflexionó sobre las exigencias morales de la solidaridad y la esperanza que brota del encuentro lleno de fe.

En las parroquias y escuelas, los agustinos animaron a los fieles a escuchar las historias de los migrantes y a ver la imagen de Cristo en cada rostro.

A través de la provincia, los agustinos han puesto en marcha y apoyan varias iniciativas para atender a la comunidad migrante. Las parroquias han creado despensas de alimentos de emergencia en colaboración con organizaciones y alianzas interreligiosas para ofrecer alimentos a las familias más afectadas por las recientes medidas de control de la inmigración.

otras se están esforzando por dar respuesta a los recientes cambios en la aplicación de la política de inmigración, incluyendo cursos de formación y seminarios sobre derechos legales y el debido proceso.

El cardenal Blase J. Cupich, arzobispo de Chicago, emitió un comunicado el 14 de octubre afirmando que «la seguridad de una nación no puede conseguirse a costa de violar la dignidadhumana». Continuó condenando el aumento de «tácticas innecesariamente agresivas que van mucho más allá de la tarea de detener a las personas».

La larga historia de ministerio de la Orden entre los marginados —destacada en particular este año por el servicio del papa León en Perú antes de su elección— aportó una profundidad especial a las reflexiones y los acontecimientos actuales de este año.

Los recursos de oración y los materiales educativos ofrecidos por la USCCB y las comunidades locales ayudaron a los fieles a conectar las realidades globales con el testimonio local, desde la acogida de familias a la vida parroquial hasta el apoyo a la defensa de una reforma migratoria humana.

Al concluir la semana, la Provincia invitó a todos los que comparten la espiritualidad agustiniana a continuar esta misión más allá de las celebraciones designadas: hacer espacio en nuestras comunidades, corazones e instituciones para aquellos que buscan refugio.

Celebración del Día de Muertos en la Preparatoria Sta. Rita

por Andrew Mario i Nuestro Club de Español y nuestras clases celebraron el Día de Muertos creando significativos homenajes que honran a los seres queridos, a los héroes y a las ricas tradiciones de la cultura hispana.

En las semanas previas a nuestra celebración anual, nuestro Club de Español y nuestras clases han estado aprendiendo sobre uno de los elementos más importantes del Día de Muertos, la ofrenda, también conocida como altar decorativo. Las ofrendas se crean para dar la bienvenida y honrar a las almas de los seres queridos que se cree que regresan de visita. Sirven como un tributo personal y visual, tendiendo un puente entre el mundo de los vivos y el de los muertos.

Nuestro Club de Español preparó su ofrenda anual de Sta. Rita. Cada año, los estudiantes, el profesorado y el personal colocan fotografías de sus seres queridos fallecidos en la ofrenda para que nuestra familia de Sta. Rita los recuerde. El club también creó hermosas mariposas monarca, que simbolizan los espíritus de los familiares fallecidos que regresan

de visita. Estas mariposas migran cada octubre desde el medio oeste de los Estados Unidos a un bosque en Michoacán, México, llegando al mismo tiempo que se celebra el Día de Muertos en México, el 1 de noviembre. Por lo tanto, nuestras mariposas comienzan en el segundo piso en dirección sur y llegan a nuestra ofrenda del Día de Muertos fuera de nuestro comedor (Dining Hall).

En las clases de Español 1 del profesor Bogucki, nuestros Ritamen (o hombres de Rita) han estado aprendiendo sobre las ofrendas con un enfoque único en honrar a los héroes caídos. Cada una de sus clases creó una ofrenda en honor a los miembros caídos del Departamento de Policía de Chicago, el Departamento de Bomberos de Chicago y las fuerzas armadas de Illinois. Cada Ritaman eligió a un héroe caído para honrarlo haciendo un recorte de mariposa para colocarlo en la ofrenda. Nuestros Ritamen también crearon papel picado (diseños recortados en papel de seda), calaveras (calaveras de azúcar) e hicieron flores de papel de seda para decorar las ofrendas.

Avanzado de la profesora Earley aprendieron sobre siete estilos artísticos distintivos de artistas de España, México y Colombia, entre ellos Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Diego Rivera, Fernando Botero y Salvador Dalí. Nuestros Ritamen eligieron entonces un símbolo que representara el Día de Muertos e ilustraron ese símbolo en cualquiera de los 4 de los 7 estilos distintivos de los artistas. Algunos de los símbolos que eligieron fueron una vela, una lápida, una mariposa, una cruz y una calavera.

Los alumnos de la clase de Lengua y Cultura Española de Colocación Avanzada dela Sra.Earleyprofundizaron su comprensión del Día de Muertos mediante una visita educativa al Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano. Nuestros Ritamen disfrutaron de las ofrendas, las exposiciones y los hermosos murales que adornan muchos de los edificios del barrio de Pilsen. La jornada concluyó con un almuerzo en The Frida Room.

A través de estas actividades y celebraciones, nuestros Ritamen abrazaron las ricas tradiciones del Día de Muertos, honrando el pasado y profundizando su aprecio por la cultura y la comunidad hispana.

P E RU V I A N V I C A R I AT E U P DAT E S Los agustinos de Perú les dan la bienvenida a los visitantes interesados en la fe y la historia A principios de octubre, los agustinos de Perú abrieron sus puertas a más de veinte visitantes para realizar una visita histórica y espiritual especial a la parroquia y el convento donde el papa León XIV trabajó y vivió. El evento les ofreció a los invitados una oportunidad única de experimentar el patrimonio vivo de los agustinos en Perú, donde la fe, la cultura y la comunidad siguen prosperando.

Los participantes exploraron los claustros históricos que en su día acogieron al futuro papa durante su etapa como misionero agustino de Chicago. A lo largo de la visita, el P. Jorge Martínez Vizueta, O.S.A., compartió historias sobre el servicio agustino, la educación y la formación espiritual que han dado forma a la presencia agustina en la región. Los visitantes tuvieron la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre la llamada permanente a vivir en comunidad, a servir a los demás y a buscar a Dios «sin descanso» juntos.

La tarde concluyó con un toque más ligero, y los invitados disfrutaron de la “Pizza Leone”, la receta de pizza favorita del papa, preparada por voluntarios locales.

La reunión, organizada por la Oficina de Desarrollo del P. Juan McKniff, O.S.A., fue una alegre mezcla de historia, fe y amistad.

Esta iniciativa refleja la labor que los agustinos llevan a cabo en Perú para conectar a las personas con el legado espiritual y cultural de la Orden.

La celebración de la ordenación sacerdotal del P. Antonio Carrasco

A principios de octubre, el Vicariato Agustiniano de San Juan de Sahagún de Chulucanas, en Perú, celebró la ordenación sacerdotal del P. Antonio Carrasco Carrasco, O.S.A. Rodeado de su familia, amigos y compañeros agustinos, el P. Antonio fue ordenado sacerdote en una liturgia que reflejó sus años de dedicación, formación y fiel discernimiento dentro de la Orden.

El P. Antonio ha servido a la familia agustina con humildad y alegría, guiado por un espíritu de servicio y amor al Evangelio.

Su ordenación marca el comienzo de un

nuevo capítulo de ministerio.

A lo largo de la celebración, las oraciones de gratitud y esperanza llenaron el aire mientras los fieles daban gracias por el generoso «sí» del P. Antonio a la llamada de Dios.

Su ejemplo nos recuerda a todos la vitalidad perdurable de la vida agustina y la importancia de responder a las necesidades de la Iglesia.

Nos unimos a toda la familia agustina para felicitar al P. Antonio y rezar para que el Señor continúe guiándolo, fortaleciéndolo y bendiciéndolo.

El 65 aniversario del Colegio Señor de los Milagros en Perú Este año se celebra el 65 aniversario del Colegio Señor de los Milagros, una escuela actualmente administrada por los agustinos del Vicariato de San Juan de Sahagún de Chulucanas en Pacasmaya, Perú.

Durante este año de aniversario, el colegio ha estado celebrando con servicios de oración, ceremonias de entrega de premios, conciertos con músicos locales y bailes, desfiles por las calles locales y otros eventos festivos. Toda la comunidad agustina y la comunidad local han participado en las fiestas.

Dilexi te

Voluntarios organizan alimentos para el banco de alimentos de Santa Rita

Viviendo nuestro llamado católico al servicio de los marginados En su reciente exhortación apostólica, Dilexi te, el papa León XIV, nuestro hermano agustino, hizo un llamado a la Iglesia para que profundice su servicio a los pobres y vulnerables.

Enfatizó el «amor preferencial de la Iglesia por los pobres» y lo situó en el contexto de las apremiantes necesidades sociales actuales, desde la educación de los pobres y el cuidado de los enfermos hasta la liberación de los presos y la acogida de migrantes y refugiados.

«Nosotros mismos tenemos que ver», dijo el papa León, «y luego hacer que otros vean, que los migrantes y los refugiados no solo representan un problema que hay que resolver, sino que son hermanos y hermanas a los que hay que acoger, respetar y amar».

A medida que la doctrina social de la Iglesia ha ido surgiendo a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos de industrialización, el llamado cristiano a atender las necesidades físicas, mentales y espirituales de los marginados se ha convertido en un debate más amplio sobre «las cuestiones sociales, laborales, económicas y culturales modernas». A pesar de todo, la misión agustiniana de servir a los demás en unidad, verdad y amor dentro de la comunidad sigue siendo la misma.

Para los Agustinos del Medio Oeste, estas palabras encuentran un hogar concreto en muchos lugares, entre ellos la parroquia de Santa Rita de Casia en Chicago. Entre las muchasiniciativasdelaparroquiaseencuentra la Pastoral Migratoria, que «empodera a los líderes laicos inmigrantes hispanos y polacos a través del servicio, el acompañamiento y las acciones de justicia en las parroquias».

Sus esfuerzos incluyen la organización de sesiones llamadas «Conoce tus derechos», la recolección de artículos para las personas en centros de detención y el suministro de información sobre programas de atención médica en Illinois.

A través de estos esfuerzos, el liderazgo de la parroquia de Santa Rita ejemplifica cómo la teología de Dilexi te se convierte en práctica pastoral: tratar a los marginados como personas con dignidad humana inherente, tal como lo exhorta el Evangelio.

Dilexi te afirma que la fe debe traducirse en acciones en favor de los oprimidos. En la comunidad agustiniana del Medio Oeste, ministerios como Pastoral Migratoria no son extras opcionales, sino ministerios fundamentales para nuestro carisma agustiniano. El fundamento de la Orden en la vida comunitaria y el llamado de Cristo a servir a los demás con caridad proporcionan una base para el acompañamiento sostenido.

Independientemente de nuestras afiliaciones políticas, somos, en esencia, católicos y seguidores del Evangelio.

El mensaje del Evangelio es una «buena noticia», de amor al prójimo, cuidado de los enfermos, los extranjeros, los enfermos y los necesitados. En un mundo lleno de tantas «malas noticias» de guerra, violencia contra los marginados, retórica política que demoniza al «otro», nuestra vocación católica y agustiniana sirve como un contraste directo.

El jueves 13 de noviembre, los Agustinos del Medio Oeste se reunieron en la parroquia de St. Jude en New Lenox para celebrar una misa de acción de gracias en honor al papa León XIV, anteriormente el cardenal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., y para la ceremonia de afiliación en la que se les dio la bienvenida a trece nuevos miembros a la extensa familia agustina.

La velada reunió a frailes, hermanas, colaboradores laicos, familiares y amigos cuyas vidas han sido moldeadas por el ministerio agustino. La liturgia, fue celebrada en la iglesia donde se han formado muchas vocaciones para la Orden, estuvo llena de gratitud por la vida y el testimonio del papa León XIV, cuyo propio camino desde la provincia del Medio Oeste hasta el papado encarna la llamada agustiniana a servir a la Iglesia universal con «un corazón y un alma puestos en Dios».

de Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo afilió formalmente a un grupo de hombres y mujeres cuya larga relación con los agustinos ya reflejaba ese mismo espíritu de unidad y servicio: Michael A. La afiliación, concedida por el prior general a petición de la provincia, reconoce a los laicos que comparten la oración, la comunidad y la misión de la Orden en todo el mundo. Cada nuevo afiliado comparte ahora los beneficios espirituales de la Orden y ayuda a llevar la visión de Agustín a los hogares, los lugares de trabajo y las parroquias.

Mientras la Provincia celebraba tanto las raíces agustinas del Santo Padre como la dedicación de estos nuevos compañeros en la misión, la velada se convirtió en una vívida expresión de la convicción perdurable de la Orden: que el amor de Dios se descubre y se comparte mejor dentro de la comunidad.
