Celebrating our Honorees:
BR. John HIBBARD, O.S.A.
Charles Engvall
MaryBeth Carroll
Rev. Edward Chapman, O.S.A.†
We thank God for your years of service to the Augustinian Order and to the community of Cascia Hall.
Dear Family and Friends of the Augustinians,
It is with great joy and anticipation that I welcome you to the 2025 Augustinian Gala at the historic Drake Hotel. This evening, we come together to celebrate our shared values, our community’s accomplishments, and the profound impact of those who live out the Augustinian spirit.
As we enjoy this time of fellowship, we honor those whose dedication, service, and commitment embody the very essence of our Augustinian way of life. It is a privilege to recognize four outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the Augustinian Order.
We are delighted to honor Br. Jack Hibbard, O.S.A., for his decades of service as a Friar, a mentor, and a family member. From his leadership as Dean of Students at St. Rita High School and Cascia Hall Preparatory School, to his roles as Prior, Subprior, and Treasurer, Br. Jack has touched the lives of countless students and friars.
We also celebrate Chuck Engvall for his 38 years of stewardship and support of the Augustinian Order. Chuck’s relationship with the Order began in 1987 when his daughter entered Providence Catholic High School, and his commitment grew over the years as he served on various leadership teams and supported Province-wide initiatives.
We honor MaryBeth Carroll for her 24 years of service to the Order, particularly at Providence Catholic High School and the Midwest Province headquarters. Her financial expertise and unwavering friendship have made her a trusted advisor to the Order, and she was Affiliated in 2019.
Lastly, we remember the late Rev. Edward J. Chapman, O.S.A., whose dedication to education and service in Peru continues to inspire.
Let us reflect on the legacy of Saint Augustine, and the bonds of friendship and fraternity that unite us. Together, we rededicate ourselves to living the Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love.
Yours in Saint Augustine,
Very Rev. Anthony Benedetto Pizzo, O.S.A. Prior Provincial
Our Mother of Good Counsel, Pray for Us!

El muy Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A.
Querida familia y amigos agustinianos,

The 2025 Augustinian Gala honors Br. John (Jack) Hibbard, O.S.A., for his decades of service to God and the Order of St. Augustine as a friar, a family member, a friend to many, and through various ministries.
Br. Jack has dedicated his life to the Order of St. Augustine, exemplifying the values of faith, service, and community. A native of Chicago, he began his Augustinian journey at Mendel Catholic High School (Class of 1969), where he was inspired by his uncle, Fr. John Mangold, O.S.A. Answering the call to religious life, he entered Augustinian formation at Tolentine College and was part of the first novitiate class in St. Louis, professing his first vows in December 1973.
After his initial years of formation and ministry at Mendel, Br. Jack took time away from religious life, working as a Department Manager at Sears Roebuck. While working at Sears in 1982, Br. Mark Emken, O.S.A., visited Jack and invited him to come to dinner and prayer at Mendel. Shortly thereafter, Br. Jack re-entered religious life. He made his profession of solemn vows in August of 1984. From that moment on, Br. Jack’s ministry would be dedicated to fostering relationships and guiding
young people in their faith.
Over the years, Br. Jack has served in various ministries in several Augustinian institutions. As Director of Student Activities, Student Government Moderator, and Dean of Students at Saint Rita High School in Chicago, he played a pivotal role in student life, introducing the Kairos retreat program and providing mentorship and guidance to countless young men. His ministry continued at Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was also Dean of Students and strengthened campus ministry and student formation.
Br. Jack then served as Prior at the Bl. Stephen Bellesini Friary in Crown Point, Indiana, for five years before returning to Cascia Hall.
Regardless of where Br. Jack has ministered throughout his years of service, he has embodied a spirit of community, hospitality, humility, and unwavering commitment to the Augustinian mission.
Br. Jack has always placed a special emphasis on community and personal connections. Whether offering guidance to a student, supporting a fellow friar, or serving as a steady presence in times of need, he has
been a source of encouragement and wisdom. His ministry has been guided by his ability to listen, uplift, and lead by example.
Br. Jack’s family has been key to his Augustinian journey. His parents, Rita and Eugene, and his siblings—Mary, Bill, Jim, Phillip, and Jane—remain an important source of love and support.
Tonight, we honor Br. John Hibbard, O.S.A., for his four decades of faithful service to God, the Order of St. Augustine, and the People of God. His leadership and pastoral care have shaped the lives of students, colleagues, and fellow friars, leaving a legacy of faith and friendship. In addition to being a teacher or administrator, he has been a guide, a mentor, and a source of encouragement for all who have had the privilege of knowing him.
Br. Jack’s legacy is one of steadfast dedication to the Order of St. Augustine and its mission. His ability to form deep connections, his commitment to strengthening faith communities, and his generosity of spirit have made a lasting impact. We express our deepest gratitude for his years of service, his compassionate ministry, and his impact on countless lives.
The 2025 Augustinian Gala honors Charles (Chuck) Engvall for his 38 years of stewardship and support of the Order of St. Augustine to both Providence Catholic High School and, later, to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel.
Born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, Chuck earned his degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois before embarking on a distinguished career in finance. He worked at a "Big 8" accounting firm and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1967 before transitioning into corporate leadership, ultimately serving as president and Chief Executive Officer of Electronic Connector Corporation, an affiliate of Anixter, until his retirement in 2015.
Chuck’s involvement with the Augustinians began in 1987 when he and his wife, Pat, chose Providence Catholic High School for their daughter Kimberly’s education. Pat was involved in teaching CCD classes in various parishes over the years and volunteering in both grade and high school. She encouraged Chuck to get engaged with the Men’s Club at the school. While part of the club,
Fr. Richard McGrath, O.S.A., then the school’s President, recognized his financial acumen and invited him to co-found Providence’s Finance Advisory Committee. Through strategic planning and collaboration, Chuck played an instrumental role in securing the school’s financial future.
To this day, Chuck continues to chair the Finance Committee and serve on other various committees and remains an active advocate for the school.
Chuck’s dedication to the Augustinians extends beyond his support of Providence Catholic High School. He is also a member of St. Jude Parish and through the years has deepened his relationship with the Midwest Augustinians .
In 2012, Chuck was invited to serve on the Finance Commission of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, where his expertise helped guide the Province’s financial strategy through uncertain economic times. He was also designated as a Trustee of the Province trusts.
Chuck's ability to evaluate complex economic landscapes has helped ensure the continued financial stability of Augustinian ministries.
In recognition of his exceptional service, Chuck was Affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine in 2015, the highest honor given to a layperson.
Chuck’s connection to the Augustinians has been deeply personal. He credits the Augustinian values of community, service, and support for others as being central to his own sense of purpose. His dedication to the Order, especially during times of financial stress, speaks to his belief in the importance of the Augustinian mission.
Chuck’s impact is not only measured in numbers but in the trust, integrity, and dedication he has brought to his work. We express our deepest gratitude for his enduring service and his commitment to advancing the mission of the Order of St. Augustine.
Tonight, we recognize and honor Chuck Engvall for his extraordinary contributions to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. His leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to stewardship have been instrumental in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of Provincial endeavors.
The 2025 Augustinian Gala honors MaryBeth Carroll for her 24 years of care and commitment to both Providence Catholic High School and to the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. MaryBeth’s journey is a testament to the power of faith, community, and the value of Catholic education.
Born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and raised in Chicago as the fourth of 11 children in a Catholic family, MaryBeth’s parents, Michael and Marilyn Bruton, instilled in her the importance of Catholic education. Years later, when her own children, Megan, Lauren, Sean, and Erin, reached school age, MaryBeth insisted they receive a Catholic education. She enrolled them at St. Jude Parish School (newly operated by the Augustinians) in New Lenox in 1993.
Father Richard Allen, O.S.A., the pastor at St. Jude Parish, welcomed MaryBeth and her family with open arms. She supported the school and the parish through volunteer work, running lunch programs and helping in the parish office. She came to know many Augustinians, including Father Mike Slattery, O.S.A., and Father Bill Sullivan, O.S.A.
As her children approached high school age, MaryBeth explored opportunities for part-time work. When a part-time position opened at Providence Catholic High School for a staff accountant, MaryBeth seized the opportunity and was selected for the position. In many ways, it was a perfect fit. Not only could she use her professional skills (she had previously worked at a public accounting firm and is a Certified Public Accountant), but she could also continue to support Catholic education.
MaryBeth quickly found that her work at Providence was an evolution of her faith and values. Recognizing her knowledge, skill, and commitment to the school, MaryBeth was asked to assist with the financial administration of the Midwest Province. One day a week, she works with the Provincial Treasurer and Finance Officer.
Her talents and dedication led to her promotion to Controller at Providence Catholic High School, where she played a key role in strengthening the school’s financial position and operations. She worked alongside Gala co-honoree Chuck Engvall as well as school Presidents Fr. Richard McGrath, O.S.A., and Fr. John
Merkelis, O.S.A.
In 2019, MaryBeth was affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine, the highest honor the Order can bestow. She continues to serve both Providence Catholic High School and the Province.
Patrick Griffin, Provincial Finance Officer, reflects: “One thing is obvious: MaryBeth cares. She cares about her family and friends, but she also cares deeply about the Order of St. Augustine, the Province, Providence Catholic High School, and each individual friar.”
Beyond her professional contributions, MaryBeth has formed deep and lasting relationships within the Augustinian community, always providing not just financial expertise, but also encouragement, support, and a listening ear. The Augustinians have become more than colleagues to MaryBeth, they have become her family, supporting her during difficult personal times and celebrating with her in times of joy.
Tonight, we honor MaryBeth Carroll for the ministry of care and stewardship she has performed for God and for the Order of St. Augustine over the past two decades.
The 2025 Augustinian Gala posthumously honors Rev. Edward J. Chapman, O.S.A., for his life of dedication to God, the Order of St. Augustine, and the communities he served.
Born in 1917 in Centralia, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Anne (Lavelle) Chapman, Edward entered the Augustinian novitiate in 1935, professed solemn vows in 1939, and was ordained a priest in 1943. His early ministry included teaching at St. Rita High School in Chicago and serving as a teacher, Dean of Men, and Director of Studies at Austin Catholic High School in Detroit before becoming Principal of St. Augustine Seminary in Holland, Michigan.
In 1960, Fr. Chapman joined the Augustinian Mission Band, traveling across the United States to preach retreats and parish missions. In 1964, after the Midwest Augustinians accepted responsibility for a mission in northern Peru, Fr. Chapman was assigned to serve as pastor of San Isidro Parish in Morropón.
For two decades, he ministered to thousands across more than 95 towns and villages, bringing
education, medical aid, and spiritual guidance to underserved communities. He founded Colegio Santa Rita, a school for children (initially, a school for girls) who otherwise lacked access to education.
Fr. Chapman’s dedication to the people of Peru was unwavering. Known for his deep faith, humility, and devotion to the Eucharist, he remained steadfast in his ministry despite the challenges of working in remote and impoverished areas. A statue of Fr. Chapman stands in Morropón as a testament to the love and respect he earned.
Fr. Chapman was seen not only as a priest but as a beloved member of the local community, according to Bishop Daniel Turley, O.S.A., who served alongside Fr. Chapman for many years in Peru. “He was always faithful to his community prayer and his personal prayer,” says Bishop Turley. “He had a great devotion to the Eucharist… [people] loved him because they knew that he loved them.”
In 1984, Fr. Chapman returned to Chicago due to health concerns. He continued his service at St. Rita
Parish until his passing on July 2, 1986. Fr. Chapman is laid to rest in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
Tonight, we posthumously honor Fr. Edward Chapman, O.S.A., for his remarkable legacy of faith and service to God’s children, both in the United States and especially in Peru. As we remember him, we give thanks for his extraordinary life and the lasting imprint he has left on the Order of St. Augustine, the Church, and the world. His impact lives on in the communities he served, the schools he supported, and the faith he nurtured. His selfless dedication to education, missionary work, and pastoral care embodied the very essence of the Augustinian spirit.

We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.
It is only right and just that we care for those who give all their lives in service to the Church. This includes those currently retired and infirm, those currently serving in active ministry, and those who have joined the Augustinians in recent years. The Midwest Province established the “Covenant Care” program in 2010, which states that Augustinians should live in religious community for as long as physical health permits.
For over 50 years, the Augustinians have been serving the impoverished regions of northern Peru. This service takes place in schools, parishes, and in basic human support activities across a rugged mountainous area covering well over 14,000 square miles. Thanks to the dedication of the Augustinians, there are now over thirty solemnly professed Augustinians in Northern Peru.
Our Vocations are the future of our religious order. These young men in formation and discernment will be the next leaders of the Church. We are blessed to have seen a steadily growing amount of young men interested in joining our community the past few years. Placing greater emphasis on vocations outreach will allow these efforts to blossom.

2024 Legacy Campaign Recap
Our recent “Legacy” Capital Campaign was a resounding success thanks to the generosity and support of members of our Augustinian community, raising over $3.1 million to support vocations, formation, and evangelization.
We are grateful for all of you who contributed your time, talents, treasure, and prayerful support to the campaign, including our Campaign Director Michael Gerrity, our Honorary Chairs, Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., and Bishop Daniel Turley, O.S.A., our Chairs Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A., and Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., and our Prior Provincial Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. We are also immensely grateful for the work of our Province Advancement Council to support and promote this campaign.
The funds raised by this effort have already been put to good use to enhance the vital work of the Province, enabling us to expand our efforts to evangelize and spread the teachings of St. Augustine and provide for the formation of future Augustinians.
Maryellen Harrington was hired as the Director of Augustinian Lay Engagement, a newly-created
position to develop new Augustinian evangelization ministries and programming, coordinate outreach efforts across existing ministry sites, and provide engagement opportunities for members of our diverse community.
Maryellen has already collaborated with Augustinian parishes and schools across the Province to identify opportunities for outreach and to connect with the community. She has organized multiple retreats, pilgrimage days, and speaker events, gathering dozens together to share in faith. She has supported existing school and parish ministries and events, including the Student Augustinian Values Institute. In a further effort to engage our Augustinian youth, Maryellen is preparing our first-ever student summer camp, “Camp Restless,” for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders.
Your contributions to the Legacy campaign directly support this work.
Additionally, funds raised by the campaign have supported our vocation and formation ministry. Our Vocation Director, Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., and Assistant Vocation Director, Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., continue to promote vocations in
person and online, traveling across the country to speak in schools, at parishes, and to potential candidates about their vocations.
We continue to utilize digital advertising campaigns to encourage young men to explore their calling with us. In addition, we support the education and formation requirements of our men at Catholic Theological Union and at our various houses of formation (more than $50,000 per man per year).
One of our pre-novices, Kurt Bragg, perhaps said it best: “Due to your philanthropy, I’m able to invest this time [in formation] with God and His people. As Our Lord shared in the Gospel of Matthew, ‘the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.’ I’m profoundly grateful to be with the Augustinians, in formation, so that I can be equipped to go out into the harvest and serve Christ, Our Lord, and His people.”
We are immensely grateful for your support – know that you and all the benefactors of the Order are in the daily prayers of our Augustinians.

Congratulations, my Bro, on the many years of service to the Augustinians, to the students, faculty, and staff at St. Rita and Cascia Hall schools and Crown Point, Indiana! How can I even begin to say what a blessing Br. Jack has been in my life. You know, folks do come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Jack has fulfilled all of those and more. We have traveled to Italy to the Youth Animators Congress, to England with Augustinian Youth from all over the world, and to Mississippi after the hurricane. Bro Jack is part of my history with the Augustinians and my husband Bill and I regard him as our family. We are all better people because Jack took a vow of obedience and accepted the first of several transfers to Cascia Hall and when he retired, he asked to come back to us! Our friendship is something I will cherish always. Thanks, my Bro.
