2024 Legacy Campaign Raises $2.7 Million: "Mission Accomplished"

Letter from the Prior Provincial
Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A.
Welcome, friends, to the Fall 2024 edition of the Midwest Augustinian. I hope that you read this magazine in high spirits and good health and know that you are in our prayers each and every day. We appreciate your prayers for us.
We have much good news to be grateful for as you will read in these pages – your outpouring of generosity and support for our 2024 Capital Campaign exceeded our expectations, and we raised over $2.7 million to provide for Vocation and Formation and Evangelization work, now and in the future. Your willingness to help us continue our Augustinian Legacy in this way is a powerful testament to the strength of our witness in our apostolic service to the Church and we are excited to continue this essential work. Thank you.
Our friars and lay collaborators continue to be busy across the Province’s ministries, supporting summer programs at our schools, walking in faith with our international brothers and sisters in Peru and in Rome, celebrating parish festivals and feast days, and engaging and encouraging one another. Our recent Women’s Retreat was a great success, and I hope the men will join us for their turn soon on September 21st and 22nd. And all are welcome to join us for a one-day pilgrimage to the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John Indiana in early October (see page 8 for more information).
As we continue to walk together in faith, let us remember to treat each other with kindness, to care for those in need, and to always follow our restless heart towards Christ’s call for us.
God bless you and thank you for your continued support of the Midwest Augustinians.

Very Rev. Anthony Benedetto Pizzo, O.S.A.

Mission Statement of the Midwest Augustinians
We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church. Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God. In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries. We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.
AROUND THE PROVINCE
As we enjoy Fall of 2024, our parishes, schools, and ministries continue to be active. Our friars have been busy supporting our various ministries, and our communities have been celebrating their Augustinian heritage and traditions. The following sections include quick recaps of what’s been going on around the Province. To stay up to date with the most recent happenings, subscribe to our e-newsletters, daily reflections, and social media accounts by visiting our website at www.midwestaugustinians.org
Augustinians from North America visit Italy on a pellegrinaggio (pilgrimage) to major Augustinian sites
In July, Augustinians from all three North American provinces visited Italy on a pellegrinaggio (pilgrimage) to learn, experience, and explore the history of the Augustinian Order through art, culture, architecture, literature, and history.
This trip is held every several years, and includes friars who have recently (or will soon) take their solemn vows to the Order.
Midwest province friars in attendance included Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A., Fr. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A., Fr. Ray Flores, O.S.A., and Fr. Jeff Raths, O.S.A.
"I especially enjoyed the chance to concelebrate Mass in the Shrine of Our Mother of Good Counsel, the patroness of our Province," said Fr. Sam Joutras, O.S.A. "The trip was a wonderful experience to walk in the steps of our brothers who lived the Augustinian life in its early centuries. To walk in the same paths they walked somehow inspired us to renew ourselves in our traditions. I'll also never forget the great Italian food and the camaraderie we shared!"
Fr. Joe Roccasalva, O.S.A., also enjoyed the trip.
"Having the opportunity to spend this time traveling in community with my brothers was such a blessing - and such a great time," said Fr. Joe. "Experiencing the culture, people, and important religious sites together made it an extra special trip. It was a prayerful, joyful pilgrimage."

The friars were able to celebrate Mass at St. Peter's Basilica on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29). They had Mass below the main altar in the Chapel of Our Lady of Childbirth. They also had a chance to meet with Cardinal Robert Prevost. [From left to right: Fr. Joe Mostardi (Villanova), Br. Arturo Renteria (California), Fr. Michael Riggs (Villanova), Fr. St. Rita of Cascia Parish Hosts Annual Fiesta de Santa Rita

Every May for the past six years, St. Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago has hosted a multi-day fiesta in honor of its patron St. Rita, whose feast day is celebrated May 22. The celebration is both about the parish's Augustinian heritage and also about celebrating the culture of the parish community.
The event includes multiple days of prayer, confessions, anointing of the sick, bi-lingual masses, and the

distribution of blessed roses on the feast day itself. The parish festival includes performances from popular musical acts, food and drink from local restaurants, and opportunities to shop and support local vendors selling jewelry, clothes, and other products.
"In one phrase, it is a feast of faith, love, culture, and tradition," says Fr. Homero Sánchez, O.S.A., Pastor of St. Rita of Cascia Parish. "This year

is more special than ever now that our two churches of St. Rita and St. Clare gather together to celebrate this multigenerational celebration. Usually, the Fiestas Committee chooses to bring a few musical groups that are known and familiar to more than four generations! We can see that what we celebrate in our faith, we celebrate with our festival: Unity, Love, and Faith."
Provincial Visit to St. Rita Shrine in Philadelphia, PA
On May 22, Provincial Anthony B. Pizzo attended the celebration of the Feast of St. Rita at the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia in downtown Philadelphia, PA.
The celebration was also attended by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States (photographed at right) and many of our brothers from the St. Thomas of Villanova Province.

Mendel Catholic Alumni Association Celebrate All-Class Reunion: A Night of Reconnection and Celebration
On May 3, 2024, the Mendel Alumni Association hosted its AllClass Reunion at Gaelic Park in Oak Forest, IL.
Over 250 alumni and friends gathered to commemorate decades of cherished memories and lifelong bonds, including 53 members of the Class of 1973 and 20 members of the Class of 1974, celebrating their 50th anniversaries.
Mendel Catholic High School was staffed by Augustinians from 1951 until its closure in 1988.
The event began with a prayer from Fr. Bill Sullivan (’59), who called for a moment of silence to honor the Mendel alumni who had passed away or were facing illness.
Fr. Tony Pizzo, Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians, expressed his gratitude for the alumni’s unwavering support and encouraged them to remain involved with both the Alumni Association and Midwest Augustinian activities.
Chairman Kelvin Lovely (’78) and President Tom Gavin (’67) took the stage, welcoming fellow Monarchs and encouraging everyone to make the most of this unforgettable evening.
Jack Vlazny (’61) received the inaugural “Jack Vlazny Lifetime Achievement Award” for his visionary leadership. He pioneered some of the association’s most beloved traditions, including the first All-Class Reunion, Hall of Fame, Golf Outing, and Christmas Celebration. Jack also held a special role as President of the Men of Tolentine from 1999 to 2012. The Augustinians awarded him an Affiliate “Filius Ordinis” in 2012, one of their highest

honors.
John Boyer (’64), introduced by Dennis Heitzmann (’64), served as the Dean of the University of Chicago for over 30 years. During his tenure, Boyer doubled the university’s undergraduate enrollment while maintaining its elite academic reputation. The campus community recognizes his unparalleled leadership by naming a new Paris center in his honor: the University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center.
Bob Lopez (’73) fondly recalled his days at Mendel, sharing his love for the friendships he forged over the years. After graduating from Illinois State University, Bob built a distinguished career in sports administration, working at prestigious institutions like the University of Michigan, UCLA, Vanderbilt, San Diego State, Colorado, and Delaware.
Dan Rowan (’74), a renowned cardiologist, reflected on his football days at Mendel. He recounted the honor of playing for the Monarchs and shared a poignant story about performing life-saving heart surgery on Coach Joe Magee, leaving the room in stunned silence. Dan continues his work today with Northwestern Medicine.
The evening culminated with everyone joining in a rousing rendition of the Mendel fight song, followed by heartfelt reunions among former classmates, teammates, and friends. Memories of studying in the classrooms, playing sports, and enjoying parties in the gym were shared as laughter and nostalgia filled the room.
The reunion was an outstanding success, leaving everyone grateful to the Reunion Committee for their dedication and hard work in making it so special.

An Update from Sacred Heart's "RESTLESS" Ministry
Featured in our Winter Magazine, the RESTLESS ministry at Sacred Heart Parish, King City, ON, Canada, provides food, supplies, and support to people experiencing homelessness, uncertainty, and distress. Started during COVID-19 lockdowns, the ministry has since grown and continues to serve those in most need of help. The following are photos and testimonials from a recent outreach event.

"It feeds my heart and soul to help the less fortunate and we have to thank God for what we have."

"My four children and I had a humbling and eye-opening experience to see how the homeless people live. It was heart breaking and ironically beautiful because these kind souls were so thankful to receive the smallest token of love with food and toiletries."

"Restless gives our Sacred Heart community the opportunity to truly participate in corporal works of mercy in a deep, meaningful, and personal way. It takes us outside of ourselves and brings us up close and personal to the harsh reality some of our brothers and sisters in Christ live in."

"I knew I was there to serve others and I felt like this was something that God wanted me to do - to feed his children, my brothers and my sisters."

To get involved or support the ministry effort, monitor the parish bulletin and social media accounts or contact the Sacred Heart RESTLESS team leaders at restless. sacredheartparish@gmail.com. Additionally, contributions to Sacred Heart Parish, King City, ON, are welcomed.
Augustinian Chaplains at Covecrest, Annual Life Teen Summer Camp in Georgia
The Augustinians served as Chaplains for Life Teen summer camp in Georgia during July.
Every summer, teens from across the country gather at Covecrest in Georgia to experience the Lord's presence together through daily mass, worship, Bible study, and other spiritually engaging moments.
Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A., Sr. Amaya Hernandez, and Sr. Ines Anson attended Covecrest Summer Camp with 350 teenagers for a week of talks, adventures, and ministry.
It was a beautiful witness of the Augustinian charism in the midst of beautiful natural settings.
The Augustinian chaplains distributed stickers and wristbands to the teens and we gave the college missionaries a booklet about Augustine's "college days" and his conversion.
Fr. Jack also went whitewater rafting with teens from Prince of Peace parish.

Bringing the Augustinian mission to life at Providence Catholic High School: Truth, Unity, and Love

Providence Catholic High School students and staff took part in the first of several service days scheduled throughout the year. The group traveled to the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Joliet, IL, to assist in packaging food for those in need.

On World Kindness Day, Student Council hosted a table for students and staff to write kind notes to others at school to brighten their days.

The Celtics hosted a Care-Kit Service Project. They received a large amount of products that were given and made into Care Kits. The kits were donated to a Women's Domestic Violence Center.

Augustinian Youth Ministry (AYM) hosted a drive to collect much needed items for veterans, which were later distributed to local organizations that benefit those populations.

On 8th Grade Spirit Night at St. Joseph Grade School Manhattan, an opponent forfeited a basketball game due to a player shortage - and 10+ St. Joe's alumni stepped up to play against the boys so they could have their special moment as 8th graders. Several of the alumni are Celtics.

Providence Catholic soccer players spent time at a New Lenox Senior Center to play bingo with the residentsjust one of the many service projects the soccer team is part of.
Augustinians Lead Pilgrimage through Italy and Greece
In late July, Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A., and Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., led a group pilgrimage through Italy and Greece, stopping at significant sites including St. Peter's Basilica, the Tomb of St. Rita of Cascia, the Acropolis, and other places.
The group celebrated Mass in front of the original icon of Our Mother of Good Counsel, the Patroness of our Province, in Genazzano, Italy.

Legacy
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Over $2.7 million successfully raised!

The Legacy Campaign for the Midwest Augustinians has been successfully completed by surpassing our goal and raising more than $2.7 million dollars for Vocation/Formation and Evangelization Programs. Thanks to our 345 donors from 26 states for making this possible!
Special thanks to our Honorary Cochairs, Cardinal Bob Prevost, O.S.A and Bishop Dan Turley, O.S.A. Having their endorsement and support carried a great deal of credibility for our vision and encouraged many people to give generously.
Also, thanks to our Advancement Council and Campaign Cabinet. We had 100% participation from these two groups. Besides making a contribution, they hosted and attended campaign events, and opened doors for us to reach out to others to participate. We couldn’t have done this without them!
And great appreciation is due
to Michael Gerrity, our outgoing Advancement Director, who agreed to stay on for one more year to be the Campaign Director and assist with the transition to our new Advancement Director, Ed Barrett.
Over the past 13 years, Michael oversaw the Advancement Office and raised more than 18 million dollars, inaugurated the Augustinian Gala, and significantly increased annual and planned/estate giving. He adds this Campaign to bring the total raised during his tenure to nearly 21 million dollars.
The Midwest Augustinians gave him the highest honor possible by making Michael an Affiliate of the Order. This was bestowed upon him by our Provincial, Fr. Tony Pizzo, O.S.A. in the name or our Prior General. The friars present at the Gala as well as Michael's Family were on stage to show our love and gratitude for his

ministry with us over these many years.

I would also like to express my gratitude to JoAnn Foertsch Altenbach and Rory Dayton for their behind-thescenes work with events, mailings, communications, videos, etc. Their quiet work and expertise made this campaign flow smoothly and seamlessly.
But as a cochair of this campaign with my classmate, Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., we know it is never about the money, but about the Mission!
$2.7M 345+ 26 100%
Surpassed Goal of $2.5M Individual Donors From 26 States Cabinet Participation
While we need funding from such special campaigns and annual appeals, it is about continuing the Legacy that the Midwest Augustinians have been building since 1905, namely carrying on the Mission of Jesus Christ in the Spirit of St. Augustine in our Schools, Parishes, and Foreign Missions. As we asked our families, friends, and benefactors to consider a gift to this campaign, we heard how the Augustinians have had a profound effect on their lives! Hearing donors speak about their experiences in our schools and parishes with our friars is edifying. These friars, past and present, just did what they thought was the right thing, never realizing the long-term implications of their ministry. Whether it was teaching, coaching, retreat work, preaching, administering the sacraments, or assisting a family with tuition to keep them in school, they changed people's lives for the better! We heard repeatedly, how their lives wouldn't be
the same if they had not encountered the Augustinians! This is the Mission-past, present and future!
I'd like to point out one particular donor, who happens to be my nephew, Trevor. He and his Fiancé Michela are the youngest donors to this campaign. When I asked them to consider a contribution to the Scianna Family gift, they did not hesitate, they said yes!

They already realize at a young age how much they have received from the Augustinians both at St. Rita and Villanova and were ready and willing to give back and support this campaign. I am very proud of them and
their generous attitude of gratitude. And so, we wrap up this campaign, claiming success because of you, our friends and benefactors for your generosity, love and support. But the Mission continues! The friars of the Midwest Augustinians are eternally grateful for You and look forward to continuing to minister to you and your families and continuing to build our Legacy together!
We pray that God bless you all for your generosity and support! And we ask God to continue to grant success to the work of our hands and hearts and to bring to completion the good work He has begun in each one of us! I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from our Holy Father, St. Augustine: "Always be dissatisfied with where you are if you are to become what you are not yet. Evaluate yourself constantly, without guile or flattery. Say 'it is enough' and you are lost . . . Keep on moving forward, walk onward, make progress!"
Thank You For Your Generous Support!

Brotherhood in Peru: Br. David Marshall at Vicariate of Chulucanas

Br. David's first stop in Peru was the theologate house in Trujillo, which is where the friars in formation live.

Br. David has been helping with English classes in both the primary and secondary schools in Pacasmayo.

“Día del Campesino” translates to “day of the farmer”. On this holiday, it is customary to dress up in ponchos, sombreros, and other farmers’ paraphernalia to honor Peru’s farming heritage.

Br. David visited the new Fr. John McKniff Philanthropic Office of Development. This is a new initiative started by Fr. Richie Mercado and Spring Rain Global to help the Vicariate of Chulucanas raise funds for various projects. In this picture, Br. Roberto Ugaz is giving Br. David a tour of the offices.

Br. David visits Morropon, where the Augustinians established their first community in the Vicariate.

David has been touring the Vicariate with

A Pilgrimige Into the Wild: Br. David Relstab leads Scout Hike
During July, Br. David Relstab, O.S.A., had the opportunity to serve as Chaplain at Philmont Scout Ranch, in New Mexico and then to serve as an advisor for the St. George Trek. Every two years, scouts from dioceses across the country are selected for this 11-day trek. Br. David is an Eagle Scout himself and is involved with the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Embracing Unity
My Experience at the Lay Congress in Rome: A Reflection from Maryellen Harrington, Director of Lay Engagement

I recently had the privilege of attending the Lay Congress at the Augustinianum Patristic Institute in Rome. This remarkable event brought together 100 participants from around the globe, each representing different countries and sharing unique initiatives and experiences of the global lay members of the Order of Saint Augustine.
The Congress's primary purpose was to create a platform for representatives from various cultures to come together, learn from one another, and celebrate the rich diversity within the Augustinian Lay community. Throughout the event, we engaged in discussions and shared stories that highlighted how the Augustinian charisms animate our communities worldwide.
One of the highlights of the Congress was a powerful presentation that left a lasting impression on me by Fr. Alexander Lam Alania O.S.A. Fr. Alex drew a comparison between our gathering and the biblical story of
Moses and the burning bush. He stated, "When we engage in dialogue with others, we have to do it like Moses at the burning bush, taking off his sandals because he was on holy ground. When we engage in listening, we are coming to holy ground." This analogy resonated deeply, reminding me of the sacredness of our interactions and the importance of approaching each conversation with humility and reverence.
Throughout the Congress, we explored how the principles of Christian community and love are expressed in various cultural contexts. We heard from participants who shared inspiring stories of how they live out the Augustinian Charisms daily through community service, educational initiatives, devotional practices, or fostering a sense of unity and belonging within their local parishes.
The Lay Congress also provided an opportunity for us to reflect on our own spiritual journeys and consider how we can contribute to the broader mission of
the Order of Saint Augustine. Through workshops, shared prayer and meals, and informal conversations, we deepened our understanding of the Augustinian spiritual heritage and discovered new ways to apply these timeless principles in our modern world.
As I return home, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the global Augustinian community. The Lay Congress in Rome was a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty that comes from embracing our shared values and learning from one another. It reinforced the idea that, despite our differences, we are all united by a common mission to live out Saint Augustine's teachings and positively impact the world.
I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this extraordinary event and look forward to continuing the journey of faith, service, and community alongside my fellow Augustinians from around the globe.

Celebrating Healing and Restoration: A Transformative Women's Retreat at
We are thrilled to share the success and profound impact of our recent women’s retreat, held at the serene Carmelite Spiritual Center.
Themed "Healing and Restoration," this retreat was a testament to the power of spiritual growth, community, and personal reflection. With 29 women in attendance, the retreat offered a sanctuary for all to deepen their faith and experience renewal in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Guided by the wisdom and spiritual leadership of Fr. Jim Halstead, O.S.A, Augustinian Affiliate Bonnie Leighty from Cascia Hall, and Maryellen Harrington, Director of Lay Engagement for the Midwest Augustinians, the retreat provided a rich tapestry of activities designed to align closely with our healing and restoration theme. Participants engaged in a variety of meaningful activities, from heartfelt witness talks and prayer sessions to small group discussions and personal reflection times.
A highlight of the retreat was the Anointing Service, a spiritual moment
the Carmelite Spiritual Center
that resonated deeply with many attendees. This service, along with the various other elements of the retreat, provided a space for participants to experience genuine spiritual renewal and a sense of divine presence.
The retreat also fostered a strong sense of community and connection. The intentional arrangement to change tables and meet new people throughout the retreat allowed for diverse interactions and the sharing of personal stories. This structure ensured that every woman had the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow with others in the group.
We are deeply grateful to all who participated and contributed to
making this retreat a memorable and transformative experience. The Carmelite Spiritual Center provided the perfect backdrop for a weekend dedicated to spiritual healing and restoration. As we continue our journey of faith, we look forward to more opportunities for growth and connection within our community. Let us carry the spirit of this retreat forward, embodying the healing and restoration we experienced and sharing it with those around us.
Thank you to everyone who made this retreat possible, and to all the wonderful women who attended. We eagerly anticipate our next gathering, united in faith and fellowship.
"I loved the fact that every activity, witness, prayer, etc. tied in so closely to the theme! I’ve been to many retreats where the theme was vague or unclear or just not well represented. This was so well planned and allowed for a much deeper dive."

"Yesterday, was such a wonderful experience for me. The witness talks... were amazing and setup our table to have such fruitful discussions. I know you have changed so many lives with this retreat."

I enjoyed the whole retreat, I thought it moved at just the right speed. I especially appreciated that I could come on Saturday morning and didn’t have to spend the night. I could not have attended if I had to stay Friday night.

"The Anointing Service was the most spiritual moment for me. It was a very inspirational day. It is hard to pick one favorite part."

"Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it."

I AM. WE ARE. A Eucharistic Reflection
by Fr. Jack Tierney, O.S.A.
In the Summer of 2024, the United States celebrates the Eucharistic Revival; an opportunity for all of us to grow in faith, understanding, and devotion of the Eucharist. The liturgy that makes Christ truly present is central to Catholic worship and our very identity as Church. Saint Augustine affirms the importance of the Eucharist in our life of faith, especially in the personal experience of personally receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.
When I was a Brother in religious formation, I attended an All-School Mass at one of our Augustinian high schools. I was asked to help distribute Communion. And a teenager comes up …. And I present him with the host by saying “The Body of Christ”.
And he responds …. I AM.
I had never heard that before – never in ministry, and not even in a graduate course on Eucharistic theology. He believed that Christ was present in the Eucharist, present in the Church, and that the Lord was present in his heart.
There were probably 200 people in line behind this young man, so this was not the time for a theological lesson. He accepts the host, and I continue with Communion. I never talked to the student, but I sure wish that I had.
It’s clear that this young man understood Saint Augustine’s theology of the Eucharist. Not only as he fully participating in the liturgy, but he was appropriating its meaning for his own life.
Saint Augustine would affirm this young man’s response.
If you, therefore, are Christ's body and members, it is your own mystery that is placed on the Lord's table! It is your own mystery that you are receiving! You say "Amen" to what you are: the response is a personal signature, affirming your faith. (Sermon 272)
The Eucharist is a gift – one that is intended to be internalized – literally.
In the Mass, we are told “Behold the Lamb of God”. The priest invites the congregation to marvel in awe and wonder at the sacrifice of Christ. As a Bishop, Saint Augustine preached to his Church asking them to gaze upon the Eucharist. He invited them, “Be what you see; receive what you are” (Sermon 272).
We remember friendship at the Last Supper, a tender moment of a family around the table, where Jesus provides the Word of Institution. Through that act of love, the Church celebrates Communion with one another through the perfect reconciliation of Christ.
The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Love that draws us ever closer to the heart of the Sacred Mysteries. During the Eucharistic revival, we pray that we may grow in devotion and understanding of this great gift – poured out for you and for many.
COMMUNITY
Uniting communities is an essential part of our Augustinian charism, especially in our individualistic modern society.

We need another capital campaign - a SOCIAL capital campaign.
For the past 25 years, social scientist Robert Putnam has studied connections between and among people in the United States, ever since his ground-breaking study, Bowling Alone . The results? Connections have been deteriorating, resulting in a significant increase in personal loneliness.
This trend towards loneliness has weakened the sense of community among people, threatening the strength of our neighborhoods, our cities, our states, and our country. Through his research, Putnam calls for a growth of "social" capital to renew our great nation.
While our American culture has been strong in promoting the rights of individuals, this positive thrust has often been conscripted by a brand of individualism that has fostered extreme ideologies and threatened the common good.
Social and moral issues get politicized. Opposing views get vilified and demonized rather than discussed, debated and respected as differences. Extremism is often nurtured by social
media and 24/7 news outlets vying for audiences.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Putnam distinguished two types of the “social capital” we need.
First, ties that link you to people similar to yourself are called “bonding” social capital.
Second, “bridging” social capital refers to your ties to people different than you.
So, ties to people of a different generation or a different gender or a different religion or a different political belief - that’s “bridging” social capital.
While both of Putnam’s forms of social capital are important in keeping people from sliding into isolation and loneliness, there is a particular need today to foster the “bridging” social capital to help us deal with the threats of extremism and intolerance.
Putnam recognizes the power of faith communities for being able to

nurture both types of social capital. Within every Augustinian community there are multitudes of different types of people: men and women, young and old, Republicans, Democrats & Independents, liberals and conservatives, rich and poor, different ethnic groups, and so many other differences. Yet, we all share the same Catholic faith (which is so comforting).
We recognize and celebrate the glue of our faith that holds us together. Our society, as a whole, needs to discover - or recover - the glue that holds us together.
So, yes, I do believe that we desperately need another capital campaign in these turbulent times, but one that raises this shared social capital among us. This is not uniformity, but is rather community . While much of God’s will is mystery, we do believe that God wills love and a sense of community among all his people.
"Within every Augustinian community there are multitudes of different types of people... yet, we all share the same Catholic faith."
Our Augustinian Commitment to Education
by Fr. Richie Mercado, O.S.A.
St. Augustine was well known for so many things—a great convert, a fearless bishop who defended the church against heresies, a scholar and theologian who produced many writings that helped advance the teachings of the church. But one thing about Augustine that is sometimes forgotten and overlooked is the fact that he was also well known to be a restless searcher for truth—truth about life in general.
St. Augustine's life was marked by a restless searching for truth, and as he was converted to Catholicism and then founded his monastic community, a love for learning was a natural component.
Since then, from the beginnings of the Order to today, we have devoted our resources, both personnel and financial, to building the kingdom of God with our educational apostolate.
It is in this context that the Augustinian Order continues to commit itself to an Augustinian Catholic education in the twenty-first century. Our academic institutions exist with the purpose of educating young men and women in the Roman Catholic tradition based on the values and teachings of St. Augustine.
The Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel currently has a relationship with five secondary educational institutions: 1.) St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago, IL; 2.) Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, OK; 3.) Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, IL; 4.) Austin Catholic High School in Chesterfield, MI; and 5.) St. Thomas of Villanova College in King City, ON (Canada).
We continue to commit ourselves to maintain and support our secondary education apostolate to the degree possible considering our present personnel and resources. Although our relationship with all of them are one and the same (based on Truth, Unity, and Love), our level of commitment to each of them varies. The province has a commitment to provide staffing, both for administration and faculty positions, to St. Rita of Cascia High School, Cascia Hall Preparatory School,
and Providence Catholic High School.
However, the province currently does not have a commitment to provide staffing for Austin Catholic High School and St. Thomas of Villanova College even though they are recognized as Augustinian schools and are visited annually by the Director of Augustinian Mission and Ministry.
Nevertheless, all of these five schools are members of the Augustinian Secondary Education Association (ASEA) where they are expected to participate in the ASEA activities, meetings of Heads of Schools, the Augustinian Values Institutes, and Student Augustinian Values Institutes.
Through ASEA, they all have access to various resources for the advancement of the Augustinian charism and values (Truth, Unity and Love), for the promotion of secondary education as a vital and proper ministry of the Order, and for assuring authentic Augustinian identity all the schools under the our care.
Augustine, we have to be sustainable in our governance and operations as a province for continued existence. Using innovative legislation, the province has moved towards sustainability in the future.
In the ordinary provincial chapter of 2014, the province passed a law on Augustinian Heritage Support. This law requires the schools that we staff (St. Rita of Cascia High School, Cascia Hall Preparatory School, and Providence Catholic High School) to include in their annual budget an amount agreed between the province and the schools for the support of the province (Province Statutes, 505).
These schools, which have enjoyed many benefits of Augustinian leadership and sponsorship throughout the history of the province, are now directly involved in our path to sustainability in the future through their financial support as they recognize the investment of the province

The province continues to be committed to secondary education apostolate. In as much as we value the sustainability of our schools, we also prioritize the sustainability of the province. Because of the decrease in the number of Augustinians in the province, coupled with the increasing need to provide for the elderly friars and to guide young men in formation, we work tirelessly to gather the financial resources necessary to be sustainable in the future.
In order for us to continue maintaining and supporting our schools, we have to be sustainable in vocations and formation for future staffing in our schools. In order for us to continue educating young men and women in the Roman Catholic tradition based on the values and teachings of St.
and the many individual friars to them in the course of the history of the province through direct financial support, long term subsidies, contributed services, and minimal salaries.
The world has changed. The reality of the province today is different. The challenges continue to evolve. What we can provide in terms of personnel may no longer be the same. But the province remains committed to continue building up the kingdom of God through our educational apostolate. We remain committed to journey with young men and women as they seek the Truth (Christ himself) through educating them in the Roman Catholic tradition based on the values and teachings of St. Augustine.
2023-2024 Annual Report
We present to you the Annual Report of the 2023-2024 Fiscal Year for the Midwest Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel.
While we operate with prudent financial management, it is the stewardship and generosity of our benefactors, who are loyal to the mission of the Midwest Augustinians, that provide crucial funding for the Midwest Province.
During the '23-24 fiscal year, the Province had 60+ Augustinians in the Province. Our men currently work in five schools, four parishes, and our Peruvian missions, in addition to spreading the good word through our vocation outreach across North America.
In the past year, over 1,200 donors made over 2,500 gifts to support the Province's major undertakings in supporting vocations, our retired and infirm men, and our missions in Peru. We are indebted to them for their generous hearts and sacrifice. In addition, we had over 350 donors support our 2024 Capital Campaign, most of whom already support our ongoing fundraising efforts.
Our Restless Hearts Society, those donors making planned or estate gifts to the Province, has grown to 125 members. These vital gifts ensure that our mission and vision continue into the future.
For more information on any of the above, please contact our new Province Advancement Director, Ed Barrett at (773) 614-5898 or ed@midwestaugustinians.org
