JUDGE NICOLA HENRY-TAYLOR HONORED

The famous rapper Jay-Z is known for many quotes, but amongst his most famous is, "Women lie, men lie, numbers don't."

People all across Allegheny County can say what they want about gun violence. They can say that it "feels" like the violence isn't dropping. Or that the funding that's spent on anti-violence organizations is a waste of money. But the numbers don't lie. In 2025, Allegheny

County recorded 73 homicides, or 37 fewer homicides than in 2024. And of those 73 homicides, 35 were homicides in the City of Pittsburgh, the lowest number it's been since 1989. When it comes to homicides, one homicide is too many. However, something's working in the ongoing fight to reduce gun violence. That "something" is a flooding of violence interrupters that are on the streets of Pittsburgh and some of the neighboring

municipalities, made possible by funding through the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and the City of Pittsburgh. For the DHS, funding comes from the Community Violence Reduction Initiative grants, and for Pittsburgh, funding comes from the "Stop the Violence Fund." Ed Gainey may not be Pittsburgh's mayor any longer, but he placed a permanent stamp on his mayoral legacy by reduc-

Etched on the Spirit of King Award Plaque at the East Busway's East Liberty Station are two more names, Rev. Samson M. Cooper and Wendell G. Freeland, who are more than deserving of having their names engraved there forever.

They join the other icons of this City of Pittsburgh who have made transformative impacts in the community of which they lived, worked and played.

Others like Constance Parker, Rob Penny, Dr. Sylvester Pace, Bill Nunn Jr., Frank Bolden, "Teenie" Harris, Oliver Livingstone Johnson and the very first person to be posthumously honored, Wilhelmina Byrd Brown, in 1989.

Reverend Cooper and Freeland were the 2026 honorees, celebrated at a ceremony at the Kingsley Association in East Liberty, Jan. 15. The annual “Spirit of King” celebration, now in its 38th year, is presented by Pittsburgh Regional Transit, the Kingsley Association and the New Pittsburgh Courier.

Reverend Cooper died on Nov. 8, 2016, at age 85. Freeland died on Jan. 24, 2014, at age 88. The men's family members were present at the celebration, including Mary Cooper-Ali, Rev. Cooper's

daughter, and Lisa Freeland, Wendell Freeland's daughter.

"Both of these remarkable men began taking action against injustice and discrimination when they were very young," said Stephanie Turman, a Pittsburgh Regional Transit board member. "They continued their quest... throughout their lives. They used their incredible skills, influence and education to build bridges and courageously confront injustice in many forms. We appreciate and applaud their powerful legacy."

Reverend Cooper began preaching at 9 years old, doing so at St. Paul AME Church in Bellefonte, Pa. He graduated from the HBCU Wilberforce University in 1955 and earned a Master of Divinity degree from Payne Theological Seminary in 1956. The next 45 years saw him pastoring at churches across Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, and then he served as the presiding elder of the Pittsburgh District of the Pittsburgh Annual Conference from 2001 until his retirement in 2007.

Reverend Cooper worked to unify different denominations and races, he served as a member of the NAACP Pittsburgh Branch, was on

From Civil Rights to ICE raids, Trump’s unchecked power puts every community at risk

(Members of the Congressional Black Caucus say the pattern is unmistakable. In a separate statement, caucus leaders condemned Trump for bypassing Congress to carry out an unauthorized military operation in Venezuela, calling it a grave abuse of power and warning that the president is increasingly willing to act without legal restraint, whether abroad or at home.)

Donald Trump’s presidency has long carried a familiar weight for Black America. What feels different now is that the force once aimed primarily at Black and brown communities is no longer contained there. With the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old White mother of three, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, the unchecked power of the federal government has moved into spaces many Americans once believed were insulated.

Good was killed during an immigration operation after her vehicle moved forward as agents blocked a roadway. Federal officials quickly labeled the shooting self-defense and branded Good, a “domestic terrorist,” even as video and eyewitness accounts raised questions and Minnesota officials accused the Trump administration of weaponizing immigration enforcement. Protests spread across the state, and Minnesota, Minneapolis, and St. Paul sued the federal government, calling the deployment of immigration agents a “federal invasion.”

As the unrest grew, Trump responded with a Truth Social post aimed

at Minnesotans that read less like a call for calm and more like a threat. He warned that a “DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING,” while painting entire communities as overrun by criminals and praising ICE for removing “thousands of criminals,” claims local leaders sharply disputed.

For many Black Americans, the moment felt grimly familiar.

“This is what unchecked power looks like,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of National Action Network.

“Donald Trump sent up his latest test balloon for erasing Black history with his twisted, alarming claims that White Americans were discriminated against from the civil rights protections that many fought, bled, and in many cases died for.”

Sharpton’s remarks came after Trump told The New York Times that White people were “very badly treated” by laws adopted during the Civil Rights Movement. The president framed civil rights protections as a form of “reverse discrimination,” echoing a broader administration effort to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the federal government.

“The facts simply don’t match up to the reality

Donald Trump has chosen to live in,” Sharpton said. “Even more than 60 years after the Civil Rights Act or the Voting Rights Act, many Black Americans continue to lack access to equitable education, capital dollars, or even their right to exercise democracy.”

Under Trump, those disparities have widened. His administration has eliminated DEI programs, curtailed civil rights enforcement, and backed legal efforts that have weakened affirmative action and pushed the Voting Rights Act closer to irrelevance. Civil rights leaders say the policies are not abstract. They translate into lost jobs, closed pathways, and communities left unprotected.

The timing of Trump’s comments struck another nerve.

“That he made these statements on the eve of the King federal holiday is perhaps the most telling,” Sharpton said. “The Trump administration has already made attempts to minimize this holiday, as well as Juneteenth, while propping up his own birthday.”

At the same time Trump has elevated claims of discrimination against white Americans, his administration has expanded aggressive immigration enforcement that critics say operates with little transparency or accountability. Investigations have documented immigration agents using banned chokeholds,

1773—Poet Phyllis Wheatley, born in 1753, was freed on this day in 1773. Kidnapped in Africa and sold as a slave when she was only seven years old, Wheatley would become Black America’s first poet. She grew up in a prosperous Boston family that allowed her to learn to read. She not only mastered English but also excelled in Greek and Latin. Her first book of poetry received rave reviews in the United States and Europe.

1906—Pioneer Black aviator William Brown Chappell is born.

1941—Singer and political activist Richie Havens is born.

1942—Big Band leader Count Basie and his Orchestra recorded their famous “One O’clock Jump” for Okeh Records in New York City.

1950—R&B performer Billy Ocean is born.

1963—Former professional basketball great Hakeem Olajuwon is born in the West African nation of Nigeria.

but was also an ardent fighter for Black rights and socialist causes. As a result he was the target of a massive government campaign of disruption and character assassination.

1977—The highly acclaimed television mini-series “Roots” begins airing on ABC. “Roots” received 37 Emmy Award nominations and won nine. It received unprecedented Nielsen ratings for the finale, which still holds a record as the third-highest-rated U.S. television program. The series introduced LeVar Burton in the role of Kunta Kinte and was based on a novel by Alex Haley who also wrote the “Autobiography of Malcolm X.”

detaining U.S. citizens, and conducting masked operations that leave communities fearful of leaving their homes.

The consequences now extend beyond immigrant communities. Good’s killing, and the administration’s rapid defense of the agent involved, has jolted Americans who once viewed federal force as distant or theoretical.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus say the pattern is unmistakable. In a separate statement, caucus leaders condemned Trump for bypassing Congress to carry out an unauthorized military operation in Venezuela, calling it a grave abuse of power and warning that the president is increasingly willing to act without legal restraint, whether abroad or at home.

“While Nicolás Maduro is, in fact, an illegitimate leader, the deployment of U.S. military power to impose political change in a sovereign nation without the consent of Congress threatens to draw the United States into an indefinite conflict,” the caucus said in its statement. For Black institutions, the pressure has been economic as well as political. The Black Press of America, founded nearly two centuries ago to give voice to people denied access to mainstream media, has seen corporate advertisers and sponsors retreat under the Trump era’s hostility toward racial equity. Newsrooms have shrunk. Resources have dried up. The mission has grown harder just as the stakes have risen.

What Black America has warned about for years is now playing out in real time. A presidency that treats civil rights as disposable, dissent as criminal, and federal power as personal authority does not stop at one community.

1971—Twelve members of the Congressional Black Caucus boycotted President Richard Nixon’s State of the Union Address to protest his refusal to meet with them or address issues of concern to African Americans.

1822—“From slavery to wealth” is the phrase that best describes the story of Barney L. Ford, who was born into slavery on this day in 1822 in Stafford Court, Va.—the product of a Black woman and a plantation owner. He was raised on a plantation in South Carolina but with the aid of the “Underground Railroad” he escaped and headed west through Chicago (where he met his wife) to the gold fields of California where he was denied the right to stake a claim because he was Black. After being cheated by a shady lawyer, he headed to the Denver, Colo., area and in time built a barbershop, a restaurant and then a fine hotel. He also built a hotel in the Central American nation of Nicaragua. Despite obstacles and setbacks such as racists bombing his hotel, Ford kept bouncing back and over time became one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Denver. After 1860, he used his influence to fight for Black rights in Colorado.

1931—Sam Cooke is born in Clarksdale, Miss. He is considered by many as “The Father of Soul Music.” The son of a minister, Cooke began his career with a gospel group known as the Singing Children. He then became a member of the famous Soul Stirrers. When he switched to secular music, he combined gospel and the blues to produce soul. Among his best known hits were “You Send Me,” “Everybody Loves the Cha Cha Cha,” and “Twisting the Night Away.” He was shot and killed as a result of a misunderstanding involving a woman at a Los Angeles motel in 1964.

1948—Two-time heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman is born on this day in Marshall, Texas.

2006—Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scores 81 points in a 122 to 104 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The score was the second highest by a single player in the history of the National Basketball Association.

1821—Minister Lott Cary leaves the United States with a group of freed slaves to establish a colony on the West African coast. In so doing, the group lays the foundation for the establishment of the nation of Liberia. Cary became acting governor of the settlement in August 1828, but died accidentally in November 1828. Nevertheless the colony survived even though it had to fight off attacks from native Africans and slave traders. Liberia became an independent republic in 1847. In 2006, it elected its first female president.

1891—Pioneering Black surgeon, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams , helped found Provident Hospital in Chicago, Ill. The hospital became one of the main teaching and training facilities for Black doctors and nurses who had frequently been denied entrance to White-owned medical facilities. It was also at Provident in 1893 that Williams achieved international fame by becoming the first American surgeon to perform open heart surgery.

1964—The 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified. It abolished the poll tax, which had been used in many Southern states to prevent Blacks from voting. Interestingly, the Republican-controlled legislature in Georgia in 2006 passed a voter identification law that many Blacks complained was no more than a poll tax in disguise.

1976—Paul Robeson , perhaps the greatest combination of actor, singer, athlete and political activist ever produced by Black America, died on this day in Philadelphia, Pa. During his life Robeson not only achieved a brilliant career on stage and in early movies

1874—Arthur Schomburg is born Arturo Alfonso Schomburg in Puerto Rico. After moving to New York City in April 1891, he became known over time as the “Sherlock Holmes” of Black history because of his relentless digging for Black historical truths and accomplishments. Reportedly, his drive to discover Black history was sparked by a fifth grade teacher who told him “Black people have no history, no heroes, no great moments.”

1885—Martin R. Delaney (1812-1885) dies on this day in Xenia, Ohio. Delaney was perhaps the leading Black nationalist of the 1800s. After fighting in the Civil War to end slavery and becoming the first Black field officer in the U.S. Army, Delaney became disillusioned with America. He began to advocate Black separatism and/or a return to Africa. He was a journalist and a physician who wrote several books including one detailing how ancient Egypt and Ethiopia were the first great civilizations long before ancient Greece. Although relatively unknown today, Delaney was also brilliant. Abraham Lincoln once told his Edwin Stanton, secretary of war, about Delaney, saying, “Do not fail to meet this most extraordinary and intelligent Black man.”

1993—The first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall died on this day. Unlike current justice Clarence Thomas, Marshall was a true progressive and fighter for Black rights, having spent years with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund waging ongoing battles with the legal establishment to protect and expand rights and opportunities for African Americans.

1893—“Queen Bess,” Bessie Coleman , the nation’s first Black female aviator, was born in the small town of Atlanta, Texas. Coleman was also the first African American (male or female) to earn an international pilot’s license. Because of the racism and sexism in America, she had to travel to France to earn the license. She traveled the U.S. encouraging other Blacks to become pilots. Queen Bess died in plane accident in 1926.

1944—Political activist Angela Davis is born in Birmingham, Ala. She was a brilliant scholar and philosopher who made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list because of her suspected involvement in the violent Aug. 7, 1970 courthouse attempt to free jailed Black revolutionary inmate George Jackson. She was also associated with the Black Panther Party. However, shortly after the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she joined the Communist Party. She later became a tenured professor at the University of California Santa Cruz although then governor and later U.S. President Ronald Reagan had vowed to block her from teaching.

1953—One of Black America’s most gifted novelists, Ralph Ellison , wins the prestigious National Book Award with his powerful novel “The Invisible Man.” The novel helped him achieve international fame. The main character constantly escapes one disaster after another. The disasters are brought on by a combination virulent racism and the character’s own naiveté. Ellison was born in Oklahoma City, Okla.

1961—Opera diva Leontyne Price makes her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. 1972— Mahalia Jackson, generally considered the greatest gospel singer that ever lived, dies of heart failure on this day near Chicago, Ill. She was born in New Orleans, La. She settled in Chicago where she briefly studied beauty culture under the nation’s first Black millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker. Among her greatest and most frequently requested songs were “Did It Rain,” “Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, “ “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

'Day of Prayer &

Threats are real to those

Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS hosted a "Day of Prayer & Advocacy" on Jan. 14. It occurred at the MOMS Green Play Yard, 5529 Black Street, East Liberty, and brough together faith leaders, community partners, elected officials, and supporters to stand with families impacted by substance use disorder and housing instability.

According to a news release from Sojourner House to the New Pittsburgh Courier, the gathering comes as federal HUD and Medicaid cuts threaten the full continuum of family recovery, jeopardizing both residential treatment and the stable housing that sustains it. Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS considers themselves "unique assets" to the region working to keep mothers and children together from treatment through longterm housing stability.

“This Day of Prayer & Advocacy is about standing with families who are doing the hard work of recovery and reminding them that they are not alone,” said De’netta Benjamin Miller, Executive Director of Sojourner House, in a statement. “Now more than ever, faith, compassion, and action must go

hand in hand if we want families to heal and stay together.”

Each year, Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS serve more than 100 individ -

uals across Allegheny County, including more than 50 mothers and 50 children, providing licensed treatment, safe housing, counseling, and two-generation sup -

port proven to stabilize families.

The news release said that "potential HUD reductions to supportive housing programs threaten Sojourner House MOMS’ ability to provide housing, case

management, and longterm stability for families transitioning out of treatment."

“Recovery doesn’t end when treatment ends,” Miller added, in a statement. “Without stable housing, the risk of

relapse increases dramatically. Sojourner House MOMS provides the foundation families need to maintain recovery, reunify, and move forward with dignity.”

‘WAMO: The Sound of the Steel City’

Documentary being produced on station's history, impact

For New Pittsburgh Courier

Pittsburgh has been known for many things, from its steel mills, to its sports teams, to its bridges, to its radio stations.

One radio station in particular, being WAMO.

WAMO began in Homestead in 1948, initially as “WHOD,” later switching to “WAMO” in 1956; the name stemming from the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. WAMO provided the Black community with R&B and soul music, with some calling it “a window on the African American experience in Pittsburgh.”

WAMO would go on to close in 2009, following the selling of the radio station by its owner Sheridan Broadcasting to St. Joseph Missions for $8.9 million.

Tashee Johnson, better known as "Tee Jay," worked at WAMO for some 15 years. He is best known as being one half of the "Bad Boyz" on WAMO's evening show in the late 1990s. These days, he's the CEO of “Tee Jay Vision, LLC," a multi-media production company specializing in film and television. Johnson has been working on a documentary on the history of WAMO and what it meant and still means to Pittsburgh's Black community. The documentary is called, "WAMO: The Sound of the Steel City."

“For the most part, I worked for WAMO for 15 years, pretty much on and off and I started when I was 19, 20, until they closed in 2009," Johnson said.

WAMO would come back on air in Pittsburgh in 2011 by way of “Martz Communications Group” as WAMO 100 (100.1 FM), restoring the voice of Pittsburgh’s Black community after a two-year departure. WAMO would

then go on to have its programming and intellectual property acquired by the radio broadcasting giant “Audacy” from Martz. Audacy Pittsburgh also owns KDKA-AM (1020, 100.1), 93.7 The Fan (sports), 100.7 Star (CHR), and Y108 (Country). Audacy acquired the intellectual property of WAMO in 2022.

"Being a part of the rich history of WAMO, the legacy...I thought it'd be a great time to be able to tell the story and really document what really went on and what people saw and what was behind the scenes," Johnson added.

This documentary seeks to accomplish preservation, a widening of perspective and lifting of “the veil” to show people what really went on behind the scenes at a station like WAMO.

“To be able to catalog its history is enough in itself for me. To be able to preserve it, to be able to share with people what really went on and the history and understanding, how impactful WAMO really was," Johnson told the New Pittsburgh Courier. "A lot of people have their thoughts and ideas about what WAMO and what a radio station should be, but very few people are able to look beyond and behind the veil to see what really goes on and some of the internal struggles, some of the exterior struggles that go on, and had to be done in order for us to even have a free radio station. I want to share some of that story and really allow people to see and understand the true culture of what WAMO was even though they may have their complaints and they might have their disagreements on the execution. The fact that it's (WAMO) undeniably a part of Pittsburgh, I want to preserve that.”

As the country battles the economic crisis, Johnson is emphatic that donating to the funding and operations of the documentary's $25,000 goal will go on to help preserve history. “I think oftentimes there comes projects, there comes moments where, collectively, if we stand together we can accomplish so much more. And right now a lot of this has been personally out of my pocket or my mentor. He and I have been working together and trying to raise funds, but it hasn't really come to the place that we really can do it full-throttle the way we want to. I understand these are tough economic times. And so that being said, I'm very careful how I ask and who I ask and even the amounts, but I think this is a wonderful cause. I think you can't go wrong with preserving our history. You can't go wrong with preserving our legacy and the impact. I think these are one of the stories that needs to be told so you know what

has been done won't be forgotten."

Johnson continued: "WAMO in and of itself has changed hands, and because it's changed hands, if you're getting caught up in what it is today, you might miss what happened yesterday, and yesterday has everything to do with today.”

This documentary is for everyone of all ages, from Gen Zers to Millennials, to Boomers.

“There are people who are older than me, who understand the power of Porky Chedwick (known as the “The Daddio Of The Radio”), Sir Walter (John Christian, a trailblazing Black broadcaster who worked in radio at WAMO and WPXI-TV), and those who are obviously younger than me. I think there needs to be a part that can bridge all three of these gaps, all these different generations. I think with the understanding of why you are here, and appreciation of the steps and the trails that have been blazed for you to be where

you are, I think it's important.”

Today, most radio stations that serve a majority-Black audience are not Black-owned, as is the case with WAMO (now on 107.3 FM). Legendary radio stations with largely Black audiences like Hot 97 in New York, WGCI in Chicago and WPGC in Washington, D.C., are also not Black-owned. However, Cathy Hughes, a Black woman and owner of Urban One (which also owns TV One), owns the largest number of Hip-Hop, R&B and Gospel stations across the country, including WZAK and Z107.9 in Cleveland. Aside from Urban One, though, the number of Black-owned radio stations these days are slim.

That's why WAMO was even more celebrated. In 1972, Ronald R. Davenport, a Black man who at the time was dean of the Duquesne University Law School, purchased WAMO through his company Sheridan Broadcasting. WAMO became

Black-owned and stayed that way until 2009. Most of Johnson's WAMO documentary focuses on when WAMO was owned by Sheridan Broadcasting. Johnson serves as director of the documentary. Alan Lincoln, former WAMO general manager, is executive producer of the documentary. Allegra Battle, who spent time at WAMO on-air in the news department, is a writer for the documentary. Harriet C. Jackson, who spent time as a producer and morning show co-host at WAMO, is a producer for the documentary. Brett Allen is director of photography for the documentary. As part of the creation of the documentary, Johnson has been steadily holding on-camera interviews with many former WAMO employees, like Sly Jock, Toss Swaid, Lisha Logan and J.J. Stone. Brother Marlon Martin, the current host of the Sunday morning inspiration program "I Praise" (7 to 11 a.m.) on WAMO 107.3, began his journey with WAMO as an intern in 1994. He went on to host shows such as "Club 106," the "Quiet Storm" and "The Breakfast Jam." In those days, he was known on the air as "Sean Richards." He's hosted the Sunday morning program on WAMO, when WAMO was on the air, since 2006. “WAMO, to me, is everything," Martin told the Courier. "I wouldn’t be who I am, people wouldn’t know the person that I am, the gifts and abilities I have, if it had not been for WAMO. WAMO locally was the heartbeat and the pulse of Black Pittsburgh; we didn’t go anywhere unless we heard it on WAMO because that’s where we got all of our information. We fell in love with all of the personalities that we grew up with, and for me it was not only an added bonus that I got to listen to them, but I got to work with them.”

“WAMO: The Sound of the Steel City,” will be shown on Feb. 28 at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. To donate to the documentary, visit gofundme. com and search "WAMO documentary."

Homicides in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County drop to historic lows

35 homicides in city in 2025 the lowest since 1989

“Our team is considered to be credible messengers who go out every day, eight hours a day, and they form relationships with the highest-risk people who are the potential shooters.”
— Reverend Eileen Smith Program Director, South Pittsburgh Coalition For Peace

HOMICIDES FROM A1

ing homicides in the city, like he said he would. There were 71 homicides in the city in 2022, his first year in office. And by the time he left office, there were 35 recorded in 2025, technically more than a 50 percent reduction in homicides over four years.

Gainey fought to keep the "Stop the Violence Fund's" community grants in tact, to the tune of an additional $1.75 million in September 2025 for dozens of boots-onthe-ground anti-violence organizations to remain rolling.

Gainey, at the time, said the organizations "exercised an unwavering strength and respect to our young people that says that you don't have to die in these streets. You can reject the streets.”

The Courier previously reported that some of the organizations that received additional grant funding from the city to continue fighting against gun violence were 1 Hood Media Academy, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, West End P.O.W.E.R., The Kingsley Association, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Community Empowerment Association, Homewood Children’s Village, East End Cooperative Ministry, A’s Vision, Hill District Youth Sports, Josh Gibson Foundation, and Za’Kiyah House Housing. Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Commander Victor Joseph was asked during a Dec. 31, 2025, press conference why he felt the homicides were drastically down in the county. Among his answers was the county's

commitment to reducing gun violence through the CVRI (Community Violence Reduction Initiative) grants, which allots $50 million over five years to local organizations.

"Different programs to try to stop the violence before it starts," Cmdr. Joseph said, "stopping retaliatory violence on the street, or with programs that change thoughts, change behaviors, change minds of folks who would otherwise engage in violent activity."

Focus on Renewal, an organization based in McKees Rocks, is the "Community Quarterback" organization that received grant funding from the county to facilitate anti-violence-based strategies in the McKees Rocks/Stowe Township area. In 2021, the two areas had 11 homicides. In 2025, the two areas had no homicides.

That's a huge turnaround.

"This represents a profound shift for Sto-Rox," voiced Focus on Renewal Executive Director Kevin Platz, in a public statement. "Moving from an alltime high of 11 homicides just four years ago to zero today demonstrates what is possible when communities are supported with the right resources, strong partnerships, and proven prevention strategies."

Platz added: "For decades, Sto-Rox carried the burden of being defined by violence. Today, the data tells a different story — one of progress, accountability, and hope."

The organization South Pittsburgh Coalition for Peace is the "Community Quarterback" for the South Hilltop area, which, in past years, has seen

its share of gun violence in neighborhoods such as Beltzhoover, Knoxville, Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, Arlington Heights, Allentown and Carrick.

Through the first 11 months of 2025, the South Hilltop area only had one homicide — 17-year-old Tyrome Gatewood Jr., killed in Mt. Oliver on March 27, 2025. A double homicide in Carrick on Dec. 18, 2025, in which Quaziah Jones, 23, of McKeesport and Damien Powell, 27, pushed the total number of homicides in the South Hilltop communities in 2025 to three.

"Our team is considered to be credible messengers who go out every day, eight hours a day, and they form relationships with the highest-risk people who are the potential shooters," Rev. Eileen Smith, program director of South Pittsburgh Coalition for Peace, told the New Pittsburgh Courier, Jan. 8. "And our outreach workers then take on a caseload, and they try to reduce the risk factors for gun violence that they are finding in the street, such as lack of housing, health care, education, poverty, lack of jobs..."

Reverend Smith said it's important to note that many of the organization's employees are full-time, thanks to the county's CVRI grants. "That means we're able to hire more guys on the street, hire a chaplain...you have to compensate people when they're doing this kind of work," she said.

Looking at the homicide data for 2025, 52 of the 73 homicide victims in Allegheny County were Black, or 71 percent. Of the 52 Black victims,

nine were Black women, 43 were Black males. Six Black male homicide victims were under the age of 18. There were no Black female homicide victims under the age of 18. Homicide clearance rates were on the rise in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County in 2025. As of Jan. 1, 2026, Pittsburgh Police cleared 24 of the 35 homicides, or 69 percent. In Allegheny County as of Dec. 31, 2025, Cmdr. Joseph said Allegheny County Po-

lice had cleared 75 percent of the homicide cases. A homicide is "cleared" most times when an arrest has been made.

Commander Joseph also said that more illegal firearm seizures happened in 2025 as opposed to 2024. In 2025, Allegheny County police seized 127 illegal firearms as opposed to 102 in 2024.

"We take an all-handson-deck approach (to fighting gun violence)," Cmdr. Joseph said. "We

try to throw everything at it, hit it from all angles.

...We all believe that it's a very small number of people driving the violence within communities, so if we're able to take those violent individuals off the streets, that can help reduce violence."

Rev. Samson M. Cooper, Wendell Freeland; 2026 ‘Spirit of King’ honorees

powerment project and the Sickle Cell Anemia Society, and he even participated in the March on Washington in 1963.

Baltimore native Wendell G. Freeland earned a scholarship to attend the HBCU Howard University, and also enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Tuskegee Airman in the 477th Bombardment Group, an entirely African American segregated unit. By 1950, Wendell Freeland was a Pittsburgher, and many still remember him as the man who courageously fought to integrate the Highland Park Pool, which, prior to Freeland's arrival, was largely closed off to Blacks. Freeland sued the City of Pittsburgh to ensure the safety of African Americans who wanted to use the pool.

Freeland later chaired the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh's education committee and served as its chairman of the Board of Directors from 1962-67. Freeland also was president of Neighborhood Legal Services, president of the Homer S. Brown Law Association, and served as senior vice president of the National Urban League Board of Trustees. For both of these African American men, they embodied the "service of others" mindset of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for whom the annual celebration is named.

Indiana proves that championship teams can be formed

:10—Before the season began, the odds for the Indiana Hoosiers to win the national title in college football were 10,000 to 1. If by some strange reasoning you had placed $100 on the Hoosiers to run the table and get to 16-0 and win the title, you would have parlayed that $100 into a cool one million dollars. Astronomical odds and yet here we are, the Indiana Hoosiers have beaten the Miami Hurricanes in a classic title game 27-21, Jan. 19, in a game with several key and memorable moments so let's dive in.

:09—First and foremost, let's talk about head coach Curt Cignetti, a Pittsburgh guy and son of Hall of Fame head coach Frank Cignetti Sr., former WVU head coach, and what an amazing job he did taking a moribund team and immediately turning them into champions. If you're of a certain age you remember Curt was a Pitt coach from 1993-1999, Quarterbacks and Tight Ends, and also was head coach at IUP from 2011 to 2016, taking IUP from the doldrums to three NCAA playoff appearances and two conference titles. After agreeing to become head coach at Indiana in 2024 he led the Hoosiers to an impressive 11-2 record, a College Football Playoff appearance

and a final ranking of No. 10. And yet the best was yet to come.

:08—Opening the 2025 season with a No. 20 ranking, the Hoosiers started 5-0 and rose to No. 7 in the rankings before opposing No. 3 Oregon in week 6 on the road. With a 30-20 win, the Hoosiers rose to No. 3 in the rankings. The next week they rose to No. 2 and closed out the season 12-0 with a blowout win against Purdue, 56-3. Facing the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the conference championship game Indiana won, 13-10, and Cignetti's Hoosiers were ranked No. 1 for the first time in their history. They beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl, 38-3, then crushed Oregon a second time in the Peach Bowl, 56-22, to reach the title game against the Hurricanes of Miami.

and flows, counterpunch after counterpunch. The Hoosiers struck first in the first quarter with a Nico Radicic 34-yard field goal followed in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Riley Nowakowski to put the Hoosiers up 10-0 at halftime. Miami hadn't done much yet and it looked like it might go down as a shutout. However, the second half was another ballgame entirely.

:07—Indiana had been dominant the entire season under Coach Cignetti's leadership, but the title game was a game of ebbs

:06—Early in the third quarter, Miami finally struck with a 57-yard touchdown run by Mark Fletcher Jr. right into the guts of the Indiana defense. And just when you thought it was getting interesting, Indiana blocked a punt on the 7-yard line and Isiah Jones recovered it in the end zone for a 17-7 lead. Miami countered with an 81-yard drive that led to another Mark Fletcher Jr. touchdown, cutting the score to 17-14. And then came the play of the game. Indiana had a drive of their own down to the 12-yard line of Miami but faced a fourth down as the drive seemed to end with a field goal attempt. But Coach Cignetti called a timeout, pulled the field goal team and put the football back into the hands of his Heisman Trophy-winning QB Fernando Mendoza. On

an absolute brilliant and gutsy call, Mendoza took the snap, hesitated a second then ran up the middle and dove from the 2-yard line into the end zone for an amazing touchdown and a 24-14 lead. It was bedlam in the stadium and after another Miami touchdown cut the lead again to 24-21, Indiana kicked another field goal and won 27-21, capping off the most improbable and incredible college season I've ever witnessed. How Coach Curt Cignetti turned around this university is probably for a book-length read and the tremendous season he got out of future No. 1 pick of the Las Vegas Raiders, yeah, Tom Brady was all over the TV in his Raiders gear so that's a foregone conclusion, but let it be said that these type of events are what make sports so incredibly entertaining and important in the scheme of everyday life and anyone that says differently is just a grouch and should be ignored.

:05—Whew! Well, let's stay on football and talk about the NFL briefly. Last weekend was great football for three of the four games, full of great plays and players and controversy, Yes, the Buffalo receiver caught the ball and was down and I'll go to my grave on that one, they got ripped and

should have advanced behind some brilliant Josh Allen QB play instead of the Denver Broncos and their now-out QB Bo Nix. And how did Houston even compete against the New England Patriots with five turnovers? That was entertaining if tough to watch. The Seattle Seahawks destroyed the 49ers, 41-6, and it wasn't that close. They look like the team to beat but never say never, the L.A. Rams can put 40 up on anyone behind MVP Matthew Stafford and that high-flying offense so this coming weekend should be interesting. I'm going with the Patriots and the Seahawks at home, the two best teams entering the playoffs and we'll see about a Super Bowl prediction in a couple weeks.

:04—Your Pittsburgh Penguins are 8-2-2 since Christmas behind the ageless wonder Sidney Crosby and in playoff position right now. It's been a shocking season considering it was going to be a rebuilding season, so everything right now is gravy as the Pens chug along and just keep posting wins. And a nice rebound season for Evgeni Malkin, who has looked dialed in most nights and remains a force to be reckoned with on the ice.

:03—Sidney Cosby is 38 years old and fifth in goals

scored with 26. He will be leading Team Canada for a third time into the Winter Olympics and do not be surprised if once again he wins a Gold Medal. He's just that damn great. :02—I don't usually follow winter sports except for the Olympics every four years, and then just casually, but with the beautiful Lindsey Vonn back on the U.S. ski team I may be paying a bit more attention to this Olympics than I usually would. Hey, I'm just sayin'. The Olympics begin February 6 and run through Feb. 22 from Milan, Italy. :01—The Pittsburgh Pirates will report to Bradenton, Florida, starting February 9 and Opening Day will be in New York at Citi Field against the Mets at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, nationally televised on NBC completely due to Paul Skenes starting the opener. With a few new additions the Pirates may, just may, be able to make a run at a Wild Card berth behind their splendid starting pitching. Only time will tell but I have my fingers crossed for some long-awaited success from our Buccos.

:00—GAME OVER/I'M OUT.

In some people's eyes, Tomlin never should have been Steelers head coach

There are filmmakers, cinema directors and producers that utilize a method named “shooting out of sequence” where the end of a filming or video recording is shot first. That was the method used by the Pittsburgh Steelers media pool to evaluate the reservoir of football intellect brought by one Michael Pettaway Tomlin; criticize without cause and start a war just because and make up a cause as you go along. I am well aware that it is virtually impossible to find a beachhead connected to a desert in Pittsburgh, a city that boasts an average January temperature of 38 degrees with nary a grain of sand in sight. But hey, that just showcases the omnipotent power of the “yinzers,” all for one and none for all.

On January 27, 2008, Mike Tomlin was transported not by train, boat, plane or submarine, but he arrived at Heinz Field puffing on twenty person hookah, chillin on the hump of a camel who had been winterized and kept warm by a keg of IC Light and a few handmade quilts donated from down under. No I am not referring to the continent of Australia but the city of Weird, sorry I meant Weirton, W. Va.

After arriving at the North Shore, Mike Tomlin was unceremoniously greeted by former University of Pittsburgh center and Washington Redskins Offensive guard Russ Grimm. Grimm then informed Tomlin that there had been a humongous typographical error on the press release that had been issued and that he Grimm, not Tomlin, was the correct hire and as a consolation prize, Tomlin would receive a lifetime supply of Pierogis and a 19-year supply of “Apple Tobackee.” Fast forward, after 19 years of being ostracized, criticized and minimized by the “skeezer media Caesars,” former Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has been given the thumbs down as he exits the Acrisure “Coliseum” and enters into the “catfish coaches sweepstakes.” Remember the “big lie” that has been swirling around the Steelers camp since QB Ben Roethlisberger retired in 2022?

The majority of the local, regional and national Steelers fan base had the opinion that Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger should have been joined at the hip, when it came to calling it quits. Most of the Pittsburgh media blatantly lied over, over

and over again by knowingly and willingly creating false rumors and that the Steelers were about to sever ties with the Mike Tomlin and vice-versa. Mike Tomlin would become a volcanically hot property with the latitude to name his own price once he became unemployed.

But as of now, Mike Tomlin has not received any credible or confirmed offers from any NFL franchise. However, the cup of opportunity for fired Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh, the man that Mike Tomlin defeated for the AFC North crown, was

overflowing until Harbaugh was hired by the New York Giants on January 17, 2026. The length of the contract was for five years with a price tag worth reportedly $100 million.

But oh no, Mike Tomlin was going to be hot off the press when he decided to break camp: liars, liars,

pants on fire. They tried to superficially and artificially cushion the impact of a racially charged diatribe by creating a false valuation after the vehicle has been totaled.

But friends and neighbors, ya know what? It’s impossible to soften the blow once the body is on the embalming table. They killed the spirit and the value of Mike Tomlin while professing insincere, puffery-filled meaningless kudos. News flash: Recently fired Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has been retained as the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Stefanski's overall record with the Browns, including the postseason, was 46-58. The “yinzers” had the nerve to attack Mike Tomlin for not having a losing season in 19 years. That is an entire lake of BS with the toilet paper factory workers out on a labor strike. And get this, Stefanski was voted NFL Coach of the Year, not once but twice! Folks, I am not kidding. A man with a wonloss record of twelve games below .500 was voted coach of the year twice! Has gerrymandering infiltrated, compromised and polluted the voting process within the NFL beyond redemption? A decade ago,

I predicted that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would never win the coach of the year award because most of the White football fans and press have been brainwashed and continue to believe that his employment was created not by his coaching intellect and acumen, but his employment was only possible because of the creation, implementation and the maintenance of the "Rooney Rule." Now hear this. There are a few rumors floating around in the swamp of possibility that the Steelers former Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith allegedly has three or four teams possibly courting him to take over as the head coach or offensive coordinator. If any of these rumors are remotely true, those teams may be “courting” disaster by being naïve and allowing themselves to believe in a future relationship with a coach that has indicators of incompetence and professional infidelity written all over it. It also seems relative to marrying a woman or a woman marrying a man who has five previous wives or husbands. Ya better take their claims of virginity and future loyalty with a few grains of salt…you digg. How much space or air-

time will the local, regional or national media devote to the prospects of future employment opportunities for Mike Tomlin? Can you even remotely visualize any NFL franchise rewarding Mike Tomlin with a fouryear, $100-million contract after he resigned or was on the brink of being fired? You may be able to foresee such a scenario happening. However, I sure as heck cannot. It took the media haters and the “yinzers” 19 years to get rid of Mike Tomlin, so it would be illogical for the NFL to allow the posterchild of the "Rooney Rule" to continue to hijack press coverage and headlines. Don’t believe me, go ask Colin Kaepernick. Hey, hey, hey at this point, with approximately one-third of NFL teams experiencing head coaching vacancies, if they were interested in retaining the services of Mike Tomlin, I am certain that at least one team owner would have done so already. There will be no Mike Tomlin riding off into the sunset. Because in the case of Mike Tomlin, there won’t even be a sunset.

Here’s a necessary reset. Why housing must be treated as a national emergency....

Property has always been more than shelter. For Black Americans, it has been the most contested pathway to stability, citizenship and generational power. From redlining, to restrictive covenants, to modern zoning laws that quietly reproduce exclusion, housing policy has never been neutral. It has either expanded access or reinforced inequality.

That is why the National Housing Emergency

Act of 2026, introduced by U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D–MI), deserves serious attention. Not uncritical praise but rigorous engagement. In my view, this legislation represents the right direction and a strong starting point for confronting a crisis that has been decades in the making. This bill does something rare in American housing policy: it treats the shortage of housing as both an economic threat and a national security issue, and it responds with the full capacity of the federal government. That framing matters.

The Reality We Must Name

We are living through a structural housing crisis. Housing supply has failed to keep pace with population growth for decades. Zoning laws and local resistance have artificially constrained new construction. Homeownership, especially for Black middle-class families, has become increasingly unattainable. The racial wealth gap continues to widen because property ownership remains the primary driver of intergenerational wealth.

What the National Housing Emergency Act of 2026 Actually Does

At its core, this legislation requires the President to declare a national housing emergency and invoke the Defense Production Act, an authority historically reserved for wartime or major national crises. The bill remains in effect until four million new or rehabilitated homes are produced, or until October 2031, whichever comes first.

IN MEMORIAM: Thomas H. Watkins built what Black media was told could not last

NNPA

Thomas H. Watkins built a daily Black newspaper in New York City when few believed it could survive and even fewer wanted it to succeed. Watkins, who died in December

“Watkins expanded his

ally and employed dozens of African Americans in journalism, advertising, production and management. Black-owned newspapers across the country have pointed to that record this week as proof that independence in Black media was not symbolic. It was operational.

Being broke at 25 is almost a rite of passage. You are just starting out, trying to figure out who you are, what you want to do, and how to make your place in the world. The problem is not being broke at 25. The problem is staying broke at 35, 45, 55 and waking up at 65 with nothing to show for four decades of work but tired feet, broken dreams, and a stack of bills you still cannot pay.

Being broke at 25 is expected. Being broke at 65 is a crisis.

At 25, time is your greatest ally. You can make mistakes, learn from them, and still recover. You can bounce from job to job, city to city, idea to idea. You have time to get serious, to get focused, and to get your money right. You can start with small amounts and let compound interest do the heavy lifting over the next 40 years.

At 65, time is no longer your friend. Time is a bill collector. It shows up with an invoice for every year you wasted, every dollar you blew, every opportunity you ignored. It will not negotiate. It will not extend your deadline. At 65, your body is slowing down while your expenses speed up. Health care costs rise. Inflation eats into your fixed income. Your ability to work overtime, take on side hustles, or bounce back from a layoff is limited.

At 25, broke feels like an inconvenience. At 65, broke feels like an emergency. Yet too many people live as if retirement is a rumor and old age is optional. They move

2025 at age 88, founded the New York Daily Challenge and made it the first Black-owned daily newspaper in the city’s history. From its headquarters in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the paper delivered sustained, unapologetic coverage of Black political power, economic interests, and community life, produced and controlled by Black ownership.

At its peak, the Daily Challenge generated nearly $30 million annu-

through their 20s and 30s like paychecks will last forever and bills will somehow pay themselves. They treat every weekend like a holiday and every credit card like free money. They want the appearance of success more than the discipline that creates success. The truth is simple: discipline today is cheaper than regretting tomorrow. Discipline is telling yourself “no” now so you can tell yourself “yes” later. Discipline is choosing a budget instead of a shopping spree. Discipline is setting up automatic savings instead of automatically upgrading your lifestyle every time you get a raise. Discipline is learning money early instead of learning painful lessons late. Too many people budget like children and spend like celebrities. They know the price of everything they want but not the cost of the life they are creating. Children spend without thinking about tomorrow. Adults plan. Adults count the cost. Adults ask, “If I keep doing what I am doing right now, where will I be in 10, 20, 30 years?” If you are 25 and broke, do not be ashamed. Be aware. Ask yourself:

Publishers remembering Watkins have described him as a builder rather than a figurehead. He secured national advertising from corporations that had long dismissed Black publications. He insisted that Black readership carried measurable value. He proved it with revenue, payrolls, and longevity.

Watkins expanded his reach well beyond one paper. Over decades, he founded and acquired the Afro

works, or am I winging it?

• Do I know where my money goes each month, or does it disappear like a magician’s trick?

• Am I living on a written budget that reflects my priorities, or am I improvising my financial life?

Learning money early is not just about reading a book or watching a few videos. It is about changing your behavior. It is about creating new habits while you still have time for those habits to pay off. Develop the habit of paying yourself first. Develop the habit of living below your means. Develop the habit of saving like you are serious and investing like you want freedom, not just fun.

Saving like you are serious means you do not treat your savings account like a revolving door. Money goes in and stays in until there is a real emergency or a real opportunity. It means building an emergency fund so a flat tire, a medical bill, or a missed paycheck does not send your entire life into chaos.

Times, New American, Jersey City Challenge, Patterson-Passaic Challenge, and Newark Challenge. Together, those publications formed a regional Black press infrastructure that covered local government, national politics, and international affairs with consistency and depth rarely matched by mainstream outlets.

In a 2008 oral history interview, Watkins described himself as a capitalist without hesitation. Ownership, he said, was not optional for Black advancement. Newspapers were economic engines as much as civic institutions, and advertising dollars

You are putting money into retirement accounts, stock market index funds, or other long-term investments and letting time do its work. You understand that compound interest is slow in the beginning and powerful in the end.

Here is the uncomfortable part: if you refuse to learn money early, life will teach you money late. And life is a harsher teacher than any financial planner. Life charges high tuition.

Life teaches through eviction notices, repossessions, calls from collection agencies, and jobs you cannot afford to leave because you are one missed paycheck away from disaster. Life teaches through working in your 70s not because you want to but because you have to. Life teaches through watching your “golden years” turn into “hold on years” where you are holding on to every dollar and every day of work. Your golden years are supposed to be a time of dignity, not desperation. They are supposed to be years of options, not obligations. You should be choosing how you spend your time, not being told where to clock in. You should be visiting your grandkids, not begging your grown kids to help with your light bill. That future is not guaranteed. It must be built.

• Am I learning how money really

Investing like you want freedom means you are not just chasing hot tips and quick flips. You are building wealth on purpose.

Property is Power! An intellectual examination

Using

Federal Power

to Increase Housing Supply

The bill authorizes the federal government to direct domestic industries to produce essential housing materials such as lumber, steel, and manufactured housing components at scale. The Defense Production Act has previously been used to produce military equipment, accelerate vaccine manufacturing, and stabilize critical supply chains. Applying it to housing acknowledges a truth Black communities have long understood; housing stability is foundational to economic security.

For Black communities historically boxed out by zoning codes designed to exclude, this is significant. Zoning has often functioned as the modern language of segregation; legal, subtle, and deeply effective.

No Blank Checks: Federal Dollars With Accountability

new regulatory hurdles. The emergency period creates a clear runway for action.

Quality Matters: Guardrails Against Exploitation Expansion without standards invites exploitation. The bill addresses this by establishing minimum residential code standards for all homes built or rehabilitated during the emergency. This protects against the replication of poor-quality housing that has historically been concentrated in Black- and low-income communities under the banner of affordability.

Why This Matters for

Black America

Preserved Exclusion

Cutting Red Tape That Has Quietly

Many of the barriers to housing are not economic but political and local. This legislation pressures states and municipalities to eliminate zoning laws that restrict housing growth. It encourages the conversion of underused commercial properties into residential housing, challenges single-family-only zoning, and supports accessory dwelling units, often referred to as inlaw suites or granny flats.

spent in Black communities should remain there.

Former colleagues recalled that Watkins did not retreat from confrontation. The Daily Challenge covered police misconduct, housing inequity, political boycotts, and global liberation struggles at moments when such reporting carried professional and personal risk. When others hesitated, his papers documented.

The Act establishes a ProGrowth Requirement tied to federal funding. Communities that demonstrate housing growth and remove barriers are rewarded with federal dollars. Communities that refuse to grow are held accountable. This flips the traditional dynamic in which exclusionary localities benefit from federal resources while blocking housing access for working families.

A Temporary Freeze on Anti-Housing Regulations

During the declared emergency, the bill prohibits states and local governments from implementing or enforcing new laws or regulations that impose a substantial burden on housing construction or rehabilitation. This provision is critical. Too often, progress is quietly undermined by procedural delays and

Black homeownership is not simply about individual success. Ownership stabilizes neighborhoods, strengthens schools, anchors local economies, and allows families to pass assets, not just memories, to the next generation. This legislation does not solve every problem. It does not erase the racial wealth gap overnight. But it creates structural conditions in which ownership becomes possible again, particularly for middle-class and working families who

have done everything right and still been priced out.

A Starting Point, Not the Finish Line

This bill is not the destination. It is a meaningful course correction. For too long, housing policy has been reactive, fragmented, and timid. The National Housing Emergency Act of 2026 is assertive. It acknowledges that the market alone will not fix a crisis it helped create. From a Property is Power perspective, the bill aligns with a core truth: ownership is not accidental. It is

engineered by policy, by access, and by intention. This legislation signals a willingness to engineer opportunity rather than preserve scarcity.

Final Thought: From Emergency to Equity

Declaring a housing emergency is not an admission of failure, it is an acknowledgment of reality. The real question is what follows. If this bill is paired with targeted homeownership programs, fair lending enforcement, financial education, and community-based implementation, then it can

become more than legislation. It can become leverage. And leverage, when applied correctly, transforms property into long-term economic agency.

This is why I believe this is the right direction and a necessary starting point.

(Dr.

Watkins also served as president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and remained on its board for decades. His leadership helped strengthen cooperation among Black-owned newspapers while maintaining editorial independence.

Beyond publishing, Watkins spoke at historically Black colleges and national organizations, repeating a consistent message about economic control

and narrative authority. He lived his later years in Brooklyn, continuing to advocate for Black financial empowerment and media ownership.

“Publisher Thomas Watkins was an icon in the evolution of the Black press of America,” Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr., President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, told member newspapers. “He was an outspoken leader who cherished the value

of truth-telling for freedom, justice, and equality. Our responsibility today is to keep the legacy of Thomas Watkins alive and impactful.”

The bricks of that future are the financial decisions you make right now. Not next year. Not when you finally “make enough.” Right now.

• Right now is the time to create a budget and actually follow it.

• Right now is the time to cut back on lifestyle fluff that does not move your life forward.

• Right now is the time to attack debt like it insulted your mama.

• Right now is the time to save aggressively and invest consistently. Discipline is not punishment. Discipline is protection. Discipline protects your future self from your current impulses. Your future self is watching you. Your 65-year-old self is depending on you to act like an adult today. Imagine two 25-yearolds.

One spends every extra dollar on clothes, trips, and takeout. Retirement is a vague idea far off in the distance. Saving is something to think about “once I start making real money.” Fast forward 40 years. The body is tired. Social Security is not enough. Rent keeps going up. This person is stuck, working a job they do not love, praying they do not get sick. The other 25-year-old learns money early. They live on a budget, even when friends clown them for being “cheap.” They save a percentage of every check. They invest consistently in retirement accounts and do not cash them out at every inconvenience. They upgrade lifestyle slowly and intentionally. Fast forward 40 years. They may not be rich, but they are stable. They have options. They can retire, work part-time, or start something new. Their golden years are not per-

fect, but they are peaceful. The difference between those two lives is not luck. It is discipline. Everyone is not going to be a millionaire. But everyone can avoid being chronically broke if they are willing to learn, plan, and act. The earlier you start, the easier it is. The longer you wait, the more painful the process becomes. Being broke in your youth is a season. Being broke in your old age is a sentence. You get to choose which one you serve. Learn money early. Budget like an adult. Save like you are serious. Invest like you want freedom. Because discipline today is cheaper than regret tomorrow. (Damon

A nation forced to watch itself bleed

In a nation still grappling with the trauma of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, the recent killing of Renee Nicole Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has once again shocked the American conscience and reverberated around the globe. Both incidents — captured on live video and widely circulated on social media and in the news — have reminded the world that systemic issues with law enforcement and the use of force remain urgently unresolved.

Let us also not forget the killing of Keith Porter Jr. by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. Porter had been firing his rifle into the air to celebrate the holiday. An investigation is ongoing.

Floyd and Porter were Black men, and Good was a white woman. Each was a parent of young children.

Joy Reid recently said in an interview about the Good murder, “What’s partly so frightening about this is that white people aren’t safe either. These people are willing to shoot white women in the face in front of everyone on camera. They don’t give a damn if you’re a white woman. They don’t care if you’re a mom. They don’t care if you’re affluent.”

Floyd’s 2020 murder became a rallying cry for calls worldwide to reform policing and address racial injustice. Now, less than a mile from that site, the fatal shooting of Good — a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, wife, mother, and community member — has reignited those same anxieties.

Bystander footage appears to show her vehicle moving away from federal agents during a massive enforcement operation when an ICE officer fired the shots that killed her. Municipal leaders, family members, and the public are demanding transparency as conflicting official narratives collide with what millions have seen with their own eyes. These three tragedies, separated by time but connected by place and circumstance, have shaken public confidence in law enforcement’s ability to protect all citizens — regardless of race, immigration status, or political viewpoint. They underscore an uncomfortable truth: when citizens are killed in confrontations with agents of the state and communities feel ignored or misled, trust erodes.

We must be better than this. A democratic society cannot function when its people live in fear of those sworn to uphold the law.

While humane immigration enforcement, and laws in general, should not be dismissed, they should be applied lawfully, orderly, and dignified. Further, equating humane policy with the unrestrained undermines America’s ideals. Today’s pain should remind us that strength lies not in quotas or militarized tactics, but in accountability, restraint, and respect for human life.

If America is to remain a democracy worthy of its name, leaders and citizens alike must recommit to justice for Floyd, Porter, Good and all who seek safety within our borders.

It gets worse!

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—Like many in the world, I’m wondering where we go from here. A year ago, I couldn’t imagine Americans going to the poles and voting for anybody in the race for President and Vice-President except Hon. Kamala Harris and Hon. Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota—but it happened and it’s still hard to believe. Just listening to what’s going on now that the same people who ransacked the U. S. Capitol are still around. Those were Trump’s friends breaking windows, trashing the Capitol, injuring and killing D.C. police, threatening Members of Congress, and to hang Mike Pence!

I think about how hard-working people who’ve had their health plan put out of their reach, because the man occupying the White House decided to take it away just because he could. Never mind, on January 6th and how, there’s no doubt much damage had been done and up pops the man who now occupies the White House, calmly giving a message—not to the American people about what was going on, but assuring everything was okay with him, that he loved the rioters, and just asked them to go home now that they had done the job for him!

After ICE killed Renee Good, he led his staff to make up and tell an untrue story about why her death was justified It’s like they think we didn’t see what happened on the day Ms.Good was killed. Trump had already made it clear that we didn’t see what we saw when

ICE blew into Minnesota uninvited.

Ms. Machado, the opposition leader from Venezuela, came to visit Trump at the White House, and what does he do? He takes her Nobel Peace Prize while threatening to take over Greenland and did so of her country! I wonder how non-voting citizens explained everything about Trump since he urged people to destroy things, when they could have made a difference if they’d just voted last November or if they had voted against what we now have! What kind of man takes a woman’s Nobel Prize when she did the work to get it, while he was starting wars! When asked about his invasion of Venezuela and asked if anything limits power to invade or coerce other countries, he brushed off international law and the very idea of accountability, saying:“Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

We thought we had a democracy and worked hard to preserve it, praying that our country would ultimately overcome its racist past and present one! We received a glimmer of hope when President Barack Obama was

President, but it soon evaporated once he was out of office. Until we acquired the current man in the White House, we were taught that no one is above the law, not even the president! Now, the one who is a multiple times criminal is “INVESTIGATING” Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey—two of the many sane people trying to make life better for their constituents. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s actions in Venezuela and their response to the ICE killing in Minneapolis and shootings in Oregon show that they believe themselves to be above the law. That is both anti-democratic and incredibly dangerous.

Where are our Supreme Court, community leaders, Congress? Wherever they are, every one of us is still responsible. We must stop accepting this craziness as it gets worse. We must do something to hold those in power and contributing to the chaos created by Trump and his minions accountable before more lives are put at risk. Trump has been rewarded, instead of punished, for his reckless disregard for the Constitution. He was asked about his family’s expanding business interests, from which he still profits. Here’s what he said: “I found out nobody cared, and I’m allowed to.” We, the people, must show him otherwise!

Dr. King’s triple threat

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - We are living in a time of deep and dangerous instability. Wars are threatened or underway, democratic norms are eroding, and economic inequality is no longer episodic—it is structural. Historian Margaret MacMillan calls moments like this ones of radical uncertainty: periods when old assumptions no longer hold, power is shifting, and leaders respond less with wisdom than with force.

As we mark the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., it is worth remembering that King did not ask to be praised once a year. He asked to be heard—and acted upon.

In 1967, King offered a diagnosis that still unsettles. He warned that the United States was imperiled by a triple threat: racism, materialism, and militarism. These were not separate sins. They were a governing system. Racism determined whose lives mattered least. Materialism elevated profit over people. Militarism enforced both at home and abroad. Together, they hollowed out democracy while pretending to defend it.

That framework fits our moment with uncomfortable precision.

Racism is now routinely denied even as it structures outcomes. It appears in persistent racial wealth gaps, in environmental sacrifice zones, in policing and incarceration, and in who is most likely to be asked to fight America’s wars. Materialism— King’s term, not mine—measures national success by markets rather than human well-being. It tolerates billionaires alongside homelessness, medical debt, and food insecurity. Militarism then becomes the default response to uncertainty, swallowing public resources while social needs are met with lectures about scarcity. Look at U.S. foreign policy and the pattern is unmistakable. In the Western Hemisphere, pressure campaigns and regime-change fantasies aimed

at Venezuela, deepened military cooperation and “advisory” footprints in Colombia, and the enduring intervention reflex toward Cuba treat sovereignty as provocation. These are not declared wars. They are the quieter, bureaucratized forms of militarism King warned us about—sanctions that function as siege, security assistance that invites escalation, and rhetoric that replaces diplomacy with dominance.

The same logic travels. Strategic attention to Greenland— wrapped in Arctic competition and resource access—shows how militarism now adapts to climate change, recasting melting ice as a security opportunity. And in Iran, the United States continues to circle confrontation through sanctions, proxy conflict, and the ever-present threat of force, despite knowing that a direct war would be catastrophic. Instability is treated not as a warning, but as justification. King insisted that militarism does not merely destroy lives abroad; it distorts democracy at home. A nation perpetually prepared for war, he argued, cannot fully commit to justice. Budgets confirm the point. There is always money for weapons systems, overseas bases, and contingency plans. There is rarely enough for housing, schools, or health care. Scarcity, in this context, is a political choice. That is why rhetoric matters. When that man who lives in the House Enslaved People Built claims that white people are discriminated against by civil rights laws, he is not offering a pocative aside. He is attempting to invert King’s moral framework. Civil rights laws were

designed to dismantle legally enforced exclusion and violence. To recast them as discriminatory is to deny the structural nature of racism and to sanctify accumulated advantage as merit. This inversion strengthens the triple threat by denying racism, glorifying material advantage, and legitimizing coercion in the name of “order.”

Radical uncertainty sharpens these tendencies. When leaders feel unmoored, they reach for militarism and nostalgia—promising safety through force and stability through hierarchy. King rejected that reflex outright. He argued that uncertainty becomes dangerous only when it is managed through domination rather than repair.

Racism decides who pays. Materialism decides who profits. Militarism enforces both. Break one link and the system strains; leave all three intact and injustice persists with administrative efficiency.

King’s alternative was not sentimental. It was rigorous. He called for redistribution alongside rights, peace alongside prosperity, and democratic accountability alongside security. The Poor People’s Campaign was not a detour from civil rights; it was the logical conclusion of his analysis.

MacMillan’s radical uncertainty names the moment. King’s triple threat explains why it feels so perilous. The question before us is not whether uncertainty will pass—it will not—but whether we will continue to manage it by denying racism, worshiping material accumulation, and normalizing militarism, from Latin America to the Arctic, from the Middle East back home.

King warned where that road leads. He also told us how to choose differently.

We cannot drift away from Dr. King’s legacy

As we enter 2026, Americans of all walks of life are witnessing the continuing political and cultural shifts in our nation. While these shifts began long before last year’s presidential election, the return of the Trump administration to power has accelerated the pace of changes impacting our nation economically, politically, and culturally. The way Americans interpret these changes will often come down to a person’s political persuasion and alignment. Too often, politics will override sound Christian doctrine, economic vulnerability, and racial identity. The term “Make America Great Again” has a specific meaning when it is viewed through a racial and moral lens. For many throughout the Black community, MAGA is more than just a catchy phrase to excite a conservative movement. Through our moral lens, we see MAGA as a political movement whose immoral goal is to rebrand discriminatory laws, racial violence, and systemic barriers reminiscent of our nation’s dark past. On the surface, we continue to hear the Christian talking points, but we refuse to be blind to the corruption, cruelty, and hypocrisy underneath. We hear those who talk about salvation, but we don’t see the Christ-like discipleship in defending the poor, oppressed, and strangers (immigrants). We hear the talk of strengthening the border, reviving the economy, and developing an “America First” posture in foreign policy. But through our moral lens, we continue to see the unjust harassment and suffering of those within the Brown community. We see the way the killing of Renee Good in Minnesota at the hands of an ICE agent is being covered up and justified by Trump administration officials. Some conservatives will deny that racist intentions exist from the MAGA movement, but we hear claims of “reverse discrimination” from a U.S. president who tells us that civil rights-era protections have “hurt” white Americans.

Commentary

In an interview with The New York Times, President Donald Trump stated, “White people were very badly treated, where they did extremely well and they were not invited to go into a university to college,” referencing affirmative action in college admissions. Vice President J.D. Vance has also backed the claim that DEI has hurt job prospects for white men. Recently, he shared an essay calling DEI “a deliberate program of discrimination primarily against white men.” When they talk about reverse discrimination, they want to “Make America Great Again” by returning to a society where there will be little or no protections in place against all forms of discrimination in both public and private institutions. Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP, pushed back against Trump’s claims of reverse discrimination. Johnson said there is “no evidence that white men were discriminated against as a result of the civil rights movement, the Civil Rights Act, and efforts to rectify the long history of this country denying access to people based on race in every measurable category,” in a statement to The New York Times.

To those who are unfamiliar with the horrors of the Jim Crow era, the shift we are experiencing may not be a strong enough warning for what lies in the months and years ahead. Even worse, the MAGA misinformation and rebranding of history may become an effective strategy with young Blacks starting to believe and accept it. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, are we fulfilling his legacy? Are young Blacks drifting away from his messages and legacy? As our nation is shifting as a result of the conservative MAGA movement, how are we resisting the conservative shift? As we witness the rebranding of discrimination through a moral lens, we are also viewing the political and cultural changes from Dr. King’s perspective. Dr. King promoted a message of non-violence, but he was still very radical. He confronted the hypocrisy of his white counterparts and respectfully held them accountable in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Every person of color needs to read this letter. Members of the Black community cannot afford to look at the ICE raids nationwide with the attitude that it is not our fight. Dr. King’s example was very clear when he wrote, “It was illegal to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers. The conservative MAGA movement means the resistance has to be a joint effort between Black and Brown communities working together in the trenches. Both communities have a common oppressor when they promote the idea of reverse discrimination, resulting in anti-DEI initiatives. The events unfolding in Minnesota affect all of us. In his letter, Dr. King explained to those who questioned his presence in Birmingham. He wrote, “Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” One reason the conservative movement is able to politically and culturally shift our nation backward lies in the truth that we shifted away from Dr. King’s legacy. Has Trump retreated from ‘America First?’

On April 27, 2016, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump delivered his "America First" foreign policy speech. He addressed the major faults in US foreign policy following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and proposed a plan to "develop a new foreign policy direction" that would "replace randomness with purpose, ideology with strategy, and chaos with peace."

Trump supporters who believed the post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were costly foreign ventures serving no American interests and the US should no longer meddle in international affairs took one key point from Trump's speech—no new wars—and developed their own "America first" ideology, which stated that the US would not intervene in world affairs.

Trump's first administration launched several counterterrorism strikes.

Trump said that these were actions of deterrence, not aggression. The MAGA non-interventionists accepted this explanation and remained satisfied with Trump, as there were no additional wars. Trump's administration also mediated the Abraham Accords, which aimed to normalize relations between numerous Arab nations and Israel, and Trump intended to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan.

In 2020, Trump's Justice De

partment indicted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and

It Out

his wife, Cilia Flores, for collaborating with Colombian guerrilla organizations to sell cocaine into the United States, and a $15 million bounty was posted on the Venezuelan leader.

Trump lost reelection in 2020 to Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Russia invaded Ukraine during Biden's presidency, and Hamas attacked Israel, leading to another Israeli-Gaza war. The Biden Administration supported Ukraine and Israel, albeit not to the extent that those countries would have liked, but it was enough for MAGA non-interventionists to become hardline isolationists and accuse Biden of having a foreign policy that was not in the best interests of Americans.

During Trump’s second presidential campaign, he boasted that Russia and Hamas would never have launched acts of aggression if he were still in office, and that when he returned, these problems would be resolved in a matter of months.

Despite losing reelection, the Biden/Harris administration boosted the bounty on Venezuela's president and his wife to $25 million before the end of their term.

When Trump returned to the White House, he was unable to conclude either war as quickly as he had promised, but his administration continued to back the Ukrainian and Israeli military efforts. This time, the MAGA isolationists weren't pleased with Trump. MAGA isolationists accused Trump of interfering in foreign affairs without explaining how his actions were "America first."

Then Trump's administration launched three military actions, turning MAGA isolationists against him.

The first action occurred in June 2025, when the US Air Force and Navy bombed Iran's nuclear facilities. The MAGA isolationists did not believe Iran was attempting to develop nuclear weapons; thus, they determined that Iran posed no threat to the United States and that the bombing was at the behest of Israel.

The second action occurred on Christmas Day 2025. Trump ordered attacks on Islamic State fighters in Nigeria who were persecuting Christians. Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect its Christian population. MAGA isolationists opposed the strikes, claiming that America should not "police the world."

The third operation occurred on January 3, 2026, when U.S. soldiers entered Venezuela,

We must finish the work Dr. King died doing

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - To honor Martin Luther King Jr. honestly is to remember that he was organizing to make the dream real—and to decide whether we are willing to carry that dangerous, unfinished work forward.

This year, let’s honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday by remembering his final mission—and by picking up the mantle he left behind.

Every year, America remembers a dream. But the work that placed Dr. King in the greatest danger was not dreaming. It was organizing to make the dream real.

Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis in April 1968 while supporting striking sanitation workers and preparing to launch the Poor People’s Campaign. He was there because he had come to understand something fundamental about American life: that racism and economic exploitation are intertwined, and that neither can be defeated without confronting both.

He was not killed while leading a desegregation battle in a northern suburb. He was killed while trying to unite economically struggling Americans across racial lines around shared demands for dignity, wages, and opportunity.

When that unity fails—when workers and the poor are kept divided—the consequences are not abstract. Wages stagnate. Healthcare becomes conditional. Food insecurity spreads quietly. People turn on one another while decisions that shape their lives are made far out of reach. Division does not just weaken movements; it deepens suffering.

The Poor People’s Campaign was designed to confront that reality directly. King envisioned a coalition of poor people drawn from many communities—Black and white, Native American, Latino, Asian American, and other communities pushed to the margins—coming together to demand economic rights that democracy had long promised but rarely delivered.

History reveals a pattern we are often reluctant to name.

In the United States, one of the most dangerous roles a leader can take on is the work of uniting poor and working people across racial lines—especially when that unity threatens systems that depend on division to function.

Fred Hampton understood that early.

Most people remember Hampton only as a Black Panther, frozen in time at age 21, killed during a predawn police raid in Chicago in December 1969. But before join -

ing the Panthers, Hampton first gained recognition as a teenage organizer in the NAACP. As a youth leader, he showed a rare ability to mobilize people, build coalitions, and translate moral clarity into action.

That instinct carried forward.

As a Panther leader, Hampton helped build the original Rainbow Coalition—bringing together the Black Panthers, the Puerto Rican Young Lords, and the Young Patriots Organization, made up largely of poor white Appalachian migrants. In one of his most consequential public moments, Hampton stood at a press conference alongside William “Preacherman” Fesperman, a leader of the Young Patriots, to declare that poor and working people had more in common with each other than with the forces exploiting them.

That image—Black, brown, and white organizers standing together, unapologetically—was the point.

Less than a year later, Hampton was killed by Chicago police in a predawn raid.

The same pattern appears, with devastating clarity, in the lives of Harry and Harriette Moore.

Harry Moore was the founding president of the Florida NAACP and one of the most effective organizers the association ever produced. Under his leadership, Black voter registration in Florida surged despite poll taxes, intimidation, and violence. He fought for equal pay for Black teachers and worked closely with labor and progressive allies, believing racial justice and economic justice could not be separated.

Harriette Moore was not simply his wife. She was an organizer, educator, and strategist who sustained the work under constant threat.

Despite Harry Moore’s effectiveness, he was never elevated into the national leadership of the NAACP. The historical record offers no single explanation. What it does show is that his work—rooted in voter power, labor solidarity, and interracial organizing—placed him at extraordinary risk in the Jim Crow South.

On Christmas night in 1951, a bomb exploded beneath their home in Mims, Florida. Both Harry and Harriette Moore would die from

their injuries. Their crime was not extremism. It was effectiveness. Malcolm X’s life followed a similar arc. After returning from Mecca in 1964, he spoke and wrote about encountering a brotherhood that crossed racial lines. His politics remained complex and uncompromising, but the direction was unmistakable: away from race as destiny and toward coalition as possibility. Within a year, he was assassinated.

Dr. King came to the same conclusion.

His final campaigns were not a departure from civil rights work. They were its fulfillment. He understood that rights without economic security are fragile—and that democracy without solidarity is easily divided against itself. That truth matters now. Today, millions of Americans are hurting in concrete ways. Just look at the news. Families lose healthcare when a job disappears. Parents skip meals so their children can eat. Seniors choose between prescriptions and groceries. Workers live one illness or one missed paycheck away from crisis. These outcomes are not inevitable. They are what happens when division succeeds.

Dr. King understood that uniting people across racial lines was not just morally right—it was practically necessary. It was the only way to build enough power to secure healthcare, fair wages, food security, and basic stability for everyone. That is why the work was dangerous. And that is why it remains unfinished.

So when we honor Dr. King, we should be careful to remember him accurately—not as a safely sanitized icon, but as a leader who followed justice to its most challenging conclusion.

This holiday should not simply reassure us. It should challenge us. To remember Dr. King honestly is to remember that he died doing unfinished work—work that remains dangerous precisely because it remains necessary.

The question before us is the same one history keeps asking: Are we willing to continue the work Dr. King died doing? Because the pattern tells us what happens when we do. And today’s headlines keep telling us what happens when we don’t.

Has Trump retreated?

DOSS FROM B4

apprehended President Maduro and his wife, and took them to New York to face the federal charges for which they were accused in 2020.

Popular MAGA influencers stated Trump had retreated from "America first" principles and apologized to their followers for voting for him. Trump is not in lockstep with the MAGA isolationists' narrow concept of "America first," but that does not mean he abandoned the ideas he expressed in his "America first" foreign policy speech.

In 2016, he unequivocally declared that a Trump administration would never allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon. Trump accused the Obama administration of assisting Iran's rise to power, claiming that Obama's Iranian nuclear deal came at the expense of Israel, our regional allies, and, most importantly, the United States itself.

Regarding Nigeria, Trump remarked that the United States is a humanitarian nation. Nonetheless, “the legacy of the Obama-Clinton interventions will be weakness, confusion, and disarray—a mess. We’ve made the Middle East more unstable and chaotic than ever. We left Christians subject to intense persecution … We have done nothing to help Christians; we should always feel ashamed for our lack of action.” Trump also emphasized that “containing the spread of radical Islam must be a major foreign policy goal of the United States and the world. Events may require the use of military force, but it’s also a philosophical struggle, like our long struggle in the Cold War.”

Regarding capturing Venezuela's president and his wife and putting them on trial, Trump stated, "American strength will be employed if others do not play by the rules. In other words, if we are not treated fairly. Our friends and enemies must understand that if I draw a line in the sand, I will enforce it.”

Trump closed his 2016 speech by saying, "The world is most peaceful and prosperous when America is strongest. America will continue to play the role of peacemaker … We will always help save lives and humanity itself, but to play the role, we must make America strong again."

These are hardly the words of an isolationist.

Trump did not abandon his "America first" convictions. The problem is that MAGA isolationists abandoned "realpolitik" and construed "America first" to mean something Trump never intended.
