The wedding of Sharon Hasselhoff and Scott Watson at Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort was more than a celebration; it was a collaboration and a testament to what happens when a close-knit team brings heart, humor, and creativity to the table.
“I met Scott online,” Sharon shares. “We got to know each other through Bumble, an online dating app. His online profile picture did not stand out, but I thought, ‘I can put that aside. He’s funny, and we have a lot in common, such as our families and loving sports.”
Their first date at Morrie’s in Sioux Falls on December 17th, 2023, was memorable for an unexpected reason. When the check came, Scott had left his cash at home. “It was a little stressful, but we had a great conversation,” Sharon recalls. “When he asked me for a second date, I said yes.”
By January, Scott and Sharon were officially dating, and they took Scott’s sons to an Iowa State-Kansas basketball game in Ames. “He’s a Jayhawk. I’m a Cyclone,” Sharon clarifies. Scott and the boys moved in that May after school ended. A basement flood forced everyone upstairs. “Nothing like a little natural disaster to bring people together.”
On their first anniversary, Scott proposed at Tumea & Sons Restaurant in Des Moines, Sharon’s favorite Italian restaurant. “Right before dessert, he put the ring on the table and said, ‘I’m not getting down on one knee,’ and just put it on my finger,” Sharon laughs. “I said, ‘Are you going to ask me to marry you?’ and he got flustered and said, ‘Oh, dang it. I forgot. I’m sorry.’ It wasn’t over-the-top romantic; it was just him, flustered, cute, and real. That’s one of the reasons I love him.”
Cindi Johnson, group sales manager for Grand Falls, noticed a change in Sharon the next day. “I’m blessed to be part of Grand Falls and Sharon and Scott’s big day. It was so much fun, and it was Sharon who brought us together with Troy Reineke from Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, and Barb Homanberg, the former spa manager at Grand Falls, to make the magic happen for their June 7th wedding.”
Troy, the group sales manager at Riverside, met Sharon 19 years ago when she worked on Riverside’s opening team. “Sharon knows what she wants and is great at building and picking a team with graciousness and kindness,” Troy says. When he learned of their engagement, Sharon wanted him involved, and Troy began collaborating with the Grand Falls team.

Sharon knew exactly where she wanted her wedding: Grand Falls, with its beautiful falls, bridge, and views from the tenth tee. “I’ve always loved watching weddings from the balcony, thinking how gorgeous it all was,” Sharon recalls. Her vision was rustic elegance with a blue ombré palette.
Troy arrived with a truck full of props from Riverside, including wooden tables, baskets, and a mobile bar. “Sharon’s style is ‘Bring it all and we’ll figure it out.’ It’s chaotic in the best way,” Troy notes.
The layout was playful and symbolic. “I didn’t want the buffet tables to be in straight lines, so we made them into an S design, and the head table was made to look like an X, like a nod to hugs and kisses,” Sharon explains. The S-shaped buffet represented Sharon and Scott. “It wasn’t just pretty, it meant something,” Sharon affirms.
The week of the wedding, the flowers arrived, and Sharon beat everyone to the truck. “We had bridesmaids, moms, nieces, and nephews all helping arrange the flowers and centerpieces,” Sharon adds. “Even my nephew made one, and Troy and Barb added their magic touch to everything,” Cindi notes. Cindi managed logistics and was a constant presence to ensure everything ran smoothly. “Cindi is a rock star,” Sharon emphasizes.
On the wedding day, nature provided the perfect backdrop. “The falls, the lake, and the bridge were a cinematic part of the wedding,” Troy notes.
A distinctive feature was the couple’s dog Harry, who walked down the aisle in a blingy chain and tiny tuxedo. “He sat perfectly still, and the picture of our family on the bridge with Harry is so adorable,” Sharon reminisces.
The reception featured the bridal party arriving in golf carts. “We had charcuterie cups, a buffet dinner, signature drinks, and sliders. It was nonstop,” Sharon explains. A live band kept the energy high, followed by the Grand Falls Anniversary fireworks display. “It was all magical.”
The celebration continued with a 90-person golf outing the next day. “It was windy, but we didn’t care,” Sharon shares. “We had custom tees and prizes. It felt like summer camp for grown-ups.”
Guests from across the country found Grand Falls to be the perfect hub. “People got spa treatments, hung out by the pool, and didn’t have to leave the property. It was like a mini vacation,” Sharon adds. It is a full resort. Grand Falls has something for everyone.
Troy says this event was special. “Sharon trusted us and her team completely. That speaks volumes, and Grand Falls is a dream venue. It’s flexible, beautiful, and the staff is top-notch.”
“It wasn’t just a wedding, but a weekend of love,” Sharon adds. “Every detail, every person, every moment. It all mattered.” Grand Falls wasn’t just the venue; it was the heartbeat of the weekend. “It gave us the space to be ourselves and gave our guests an experience they’ll never forget.”

In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, today’s Black Hills brides are choosing something far more personal to walk down the aisle with: jewelry that tells a story.
Whether it’s a delicate drop earring with heirloom energy or a custom cuff forged with centuries-old silversmithing techniques, 2025’s bridal jewelry scene is more expressive and meaningful than ever before.
“We’re seeing brides gravitate toward pieces that feel heirloom-worthy, but still reflect their personal style,” adds Annie Tice-Poseley of Dakota Sky Stone.
While diamonds will always have their place, brides are embracing a richer, more textured jewelry palette this year. Think layered metals, unexpected stone pairings, and a strong shift toward turquoise, a gemstone once considered niche, now stepping boldly into the bridal spotlight.

“Turquoise is definitely becoming more popular,” Annie shares. “It’s no longer just a Western thing. Brides love its vibrant color and deep symbolism. It’s a beautiful way to make your wedding look truly your own.”
Modern brides aren’t just thinking about the ceremony; they’re thinking abouat their legacy. Heirloom-inspired pieces that transition beautifully from the aisle to everyday wear are in high demand.
“One of our favorite pieces was a necklace centered around a stone the bride’s father gave her years ago. It became the heart of her entire look,” Annie shares.
“We’re also seeing a lot of matching bride-and-groom cuff sets, turquoise hairpieces, and engraved bolos for grooms. It’s all about creating wearable memories.”
Dakota Sky Stone’s custom groomswear includes engraved bolos with initials and wedding dates, matching belt buckles, and statement cufflinks, all featuring stones that echo the bride’s jewelry, creating a cohesive, meaningful aesthetic for the couple’s special day.
With roots running four generations deep in Native American silversmithing and stone collecting, Dakota Sky Stone has always prioritized craftsmanship. But they also know how to keep things current with the ever-changing and evolving bridal trends.
“Our artistry always comes first. We honor traditional techniques but bring in fresh touches, updated stamping, new silhouettes, and color palettes that fit each bride’s vision. The result is timeless, but still very of the moment,” Annie affirms.

For brides intrigued by turquoise but unsure how to incorporate it, the advice is simple: start small, and make it yours. “Even a subtle accent pendant or earring can add a stunning pop. Turquoise photographs beautifully, becoming a keepsake you will treasure forever, long after your wedding day,” Annie notes.
What is the most magical part of the custom wedding process?
“It’s watching that moment when everything clicks: the stone, the style, and the story. You see it in her eyes—she has found her forever piece. Knowing we helped create something that will live on in her family’s memories is incredibly special,” Annie shares.

It’s not every day your forever love shows up to your dad’s 60th birthday party without even knowing your dad, but that’s exactly how things took a turn for Kate and Chris Schmidt.
Recently married this past June, the couple had a unique path to finding each other. “We actually met back in 2013 through mutual friends at Briar Cliff University,” Kate smiles. “I’m from Sioux City and was heading to USD to play volleyball, but a bunch of my friends were going to Briar Cliff to play sports, so our circles crossed naturally.”
Despite that early connection, they dated other people during college. Years later, when both were newly single, fate stepped in again. Kate nonchalantly invited Chris to her dad’s party, never expecting him to come. “He didn’t even know my dad, but I think he knew it was a good opportunity since we were both single,” she laughs. “After that, I’ve seen him every single day. We’ve been best friends ever since.”
Kate literally means every day. The two moved in together after just a month of officially dating. Their bond was immediate and natural, fueled by shared passions and deep companionship. “We’re obsessed with our sports,” Kate says. “As huge Vikings fans, we try to visit a different stadium together each year.”
Then there’s Kobe, their beloved pit bull who came into their lives as a Valentine’s Day surprise five years ago. “I’d never had a dog before, and I was worried he wouldn’t be nice, but he’s the most perfect dog ever,” Kate adds.
From golf rounds and movie nights to cooking together (Chris is the chef who makes Kate’s favorite lasagna) and spending time with their large families, Kate and Chris found joy in the everyday. “In the past five and a half years, thirteen of our friends have moved into the same neighborhood,” she notes. “It’s just such a full life.”
When Chris proposed over Memorial Day weekend 2024, it was perfectly them. Nothing flashy, just both families and Kate’s godmother gathered for a private dinner at a local restaurant. “I always told him not to do it in front of people,” Kate admits. “But really, there was no other way. We’re always with our families and friends. It made perfect sense.”
Wedding planning began with priorities that reflected that same love of family and community. The guest list came first, then the venue and photographer. Initially, Chris and Kate took a list of nearly 600 guests to her parents, and they eventually whittled it down to 477 invitations with around 360 RSVPs.

Choosing the Holiday Inn Express and Dakota Dunes Event Center felt natural. “We wanted something close to home but different. We live right in the Dakota Dunes tri-state area, so everything’s close. The Holiday Inn Express was just down the boulevard from our life and our community,” Kate explains.
Danielle O’Connor, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, explains, “When couples are looking at venues, my biggest tip is to think beyond just the space. Consider the full guest experience. Is there convenient lodging nearby? Is there an outdoor space for photos or a cocktail hour? Those little details can really elevate the day. At the Dakota Dunes Event Center, we’re proud to offer all of that in one spot with our beautiful event center connected to a Holiday Inn Express, a scenic outdoor patio, and a spacious pre-function area that makes a stunning first impression.”
Working with event planner Paislee Dooley made planning seamless. “They handled everything from room setup, décor, catering tastings, linens, and even tear down,” Kate adds. “Our families didn’t have to worry about anything, and we were able to just be present and enjoy the day.”
Danielle emphasizes that this level of care is part of what makes the planning experience with their team stand out. “We also understand how overwhelming wedding planning can be, so our team is committed to making the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible,” she says.
Their Catholic faith was central to the ceremony, with family members serving as readers, servers, flower girls, ring bearers, and Kate’s uncle as deacon. “We really wanted our family to be a part of it,” Kate smiles. “It brought so much meaning to the day.”
A private first look offered sweet, hilarious moments. “Chris was looking at me, and I just said ‘Hi.’ I was so nervous,” Kate remembers. “We were running behind, and we ended up laughing through it.” They saved their personal vows for their plane ride to California, writing them down to read silently to themselves.
During the ceremony, nerves gave way to joy. “I totally forgot my responses. I was standing at the altar, nervous to be the center of attention, but Father guided us through the entire mass,” Kate laughs. “We were giggling and laughing the whole time. It was just so us.”
The reception unfolded effortlessly with good food, music, and company, just the way they envisioned it. Their California honeymoon included golf, Legoland, and beach resort relaxation.
Reflecting on the experience, Kate offers two pieces of advice for future couples: “When you pick a venue, think about catering because some places have limitations. But more importantly, stay true to yourselves. It’s about you and your husband. Invite people you love, and be yourself. That’s why our ceremony was so special. We kept our focus on the importance of the sacrament and the commitment we were making to God. That’s what mattered most.”

Choosing an engagement ring and wedding band with their ‘forever’ person is a magical moment that many dream of. The Diamond Room in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been making those dreams a reality for more than 30 years.
“We believe in what we are doing here,” says Emily Arteman, Director of Marketing and Sales. “We are here to make moments happen; to guide you through the process.”
It’s a process that can feel overwhelming for many. That’s why it’s The Diamond Room’s goal to get you exactly what you want, for the budget you have.

“We focus on quality, affordability, and customer service. We do custom jobs, and we have an in-house goldsmith. We’re kind of your full-service, locally owned jewelry store, and we are the only location in the United States,” Emily explains.
It starts with the design.
“We have a showcase full of specific engagement rings, but there are always little tweaks that can be made. We see customizations for almost every bridal consultation because you want your ring to feel like ‘you.’ Couples will come in with their Pinterest boards and say, ‘I love this about this ring,’ and we pull inspiration from the showcase and bring their ideas to life.”
Once the design is locked in, Emily says customers get a computer-automated design rendering (CAD) so you can see that ring in real time.
“We can also print them a wax mold so they can see it in 3D and have something physical to hold. That way, we can make changes before we cast it all in gold.”
The options are nearly endless. 2024 was the year of solitaires with the hidden halo: the diamond row underneath the center stone.
“A lot of our customers like to call them their driving diamonds because when your hands are on the wheel, that’s what you see.”
But like most things in fashion, trends are coming back.
“I feel like right now we are kind of sitting in the 1980s retrospect of engagement rings with lots of yellow gold,” Emily explains. “I think the trend for this next year will be those really fancy cut diamond shapes like elongated hexagon or a moval. So, they’re cutting these stones in different ways to make it a little bit different.”
Trends are often brought on by significant pop culture moments.
“We have Marquise-shaped diamonds becoming popular again, which I attest to Selena Gomez. We saw a lot of ovals when Hailey Bieber got engaged. Now that Taylor Swift is engaged, we’ve been seeing a little bit more of that elongated cushion,” Emily notes.
Another popular trend is the stackable look, placing multiple bands with your engagement ring to create that texture.
But no matter the changing trends, Emily says one thing will always remain the same: “That classic style will never end: the solitaire engagement ring and classic diamond wedding band.”
But it’s not just women’s bands that are popular for customization. “Men’s options are endless,” Emily adds. “You have alternative metals coming back like cobalt chrome, black zirconium, tantalum, and titanium. How thick is it? What shape? Does it have a beveled edge? What kind of finishes does it

have? Do we want engraving? So, it’s fun to see the guys be able to put that together as well.”
Emily says The Diamond Room recommends that couples look for bands three months before the wedding.
The most important part of the process, and Emily’s ‘Why,’ will always be the customer. “We create relationships with them,” Emily shares. “They’re letting us into such a big moment of their life, and we feel honored to be part of their process.”

There’s something undeniably magical about a Christmas engagement, and for Doria Esche, the holiday always held a special place in her heart. Inspired by her grandparents, who eloped on Christmas Day decades earlier, Adam proposed during a snowy Christmas light stroll through Falls Park, fulfilling Doria’s childhood wish for a fairy-tale moment.
That frozen night—bundled in layers, teeth chattering, and hearts racing—marked the beginning of a love story that would come full circle nearly two years later with a sentimental winter wedding in Sioux Falls.
Doria and Adam’s connection began in the most modern way: on Tinder. While Adam was visiting a friend, their apps synced across state lines, leading to a conversation that quickly became something more. Their first date was lunch at a local Perkins. Nearly two years later, they returned to the same booth for breakfast on the morning of their wedding.
“It really helped calm the nerves,” Doria shares. As they stepped out of the diner, a gentle snowfall began—just as she had hoped. “I remember looking up and thinking, ‘This is it. This is the kind of love I prayed for,’” she smiles.
With Doria being the youngest of five and Adam an only child, they balanced different wedding priorities. “He really wanted the party. I wanted an intimate, sentimental day,” Doria says. The compromise? A micro-wedding with 50 of their closest friends and family focused on meaningful moments and personal details.
“We both really love art and music,” Doria explains. “Some of our most memorable dates were to theater productions, canvas painting, and pottery.” Naturally, they wove those shared memories into the wedding. The top two ways? Hiring a live wedding artist and live musicians instead of a traditional DJ. “It was so great to see our friends and family gathered around Jillian (the painter), just enamored by the image she was creating,” Doria says.
close throughout the day. “Having my grandma there matching with us felt like such a full-circle moment,” Doria says. “She’s always been a pillar in my life.”
Before the ceremony, Doria and Adam shared an emotional first look. Just catching a glimpse of Adam in his burgundy velvet tux brought Doria to tears. In their private moment, she revealed a heart-shaped patch sewn into her dress lining and a bouquet wrap that read, “I have found the one my heart loves.”

Because many guests were traveling from out of state, Doria and Adam curated a week of activities leading up to the big day. “We wanted the entire week to feel special, not just the wedding day,” says Doria. Welcome bags included a custom postcard of their proposal spot, a breakfast-scented candle (an ode to how their story began), and a mini map of Sioux Falls highlighting their favorite locations.
The morning of the wedding was filled with quiet joy. Adam and his groomsmen prepped at Hotel on Phillips, donning custom socks with Adam’s face and receiving curated toiletry bags and cufflink sets. Meanwhile, Doria and her bridal party sipped Caribou coffee and unwrapped embroidered sweatshirts, slippers, and canvas totes at the Convolo bridal suite. Her “something blue” was light blue hoodies for her mom, mother-in-law, and her granny—who stayed
The wedding party lunch was a fun, picnic-style gathering complete with pizza, soda, and clear ponchos. Doria laughs, “It was the perfect, messy, funny, very us moment. There’s a photo of me holding a pizza slice in one hand and my bouquet in the other—and I love it.”
Their candlelit ceremony was filled with sweet, tearful moments and written entirely by the couple. A unique “group vow” invited guests to be active participants in the union. Custom embroidered handkerchiefs and program booklets filled with personal touches were placed at each seat.
After the ceremony, Doria and Adam signed their marriage license with engraved pens and their mothers as witnesses. Before joining the reception, they took a quiet moment alone, where Doria changed into custom embroidered Converse to dance the night away in comfort.
The reception at Convolo exuded cozy elegance. Live harp and string quartet music set a serene yet celebratory tone. Guests gathered around live painter Jillian Artistry as she transformed the couple’s first kiss into a timeless keepsake. A single king’s table brought everyone together, decorated with thrifted goblets, embroidered napkins, and leather place cards labeled “The Esches.”
Food and fun came in the form of a dessert wall, a hot cocoa bar with custom sleeves, a grazing table, and a champagne wall featuring their signature “Christmas Mimosa.” There were also two guestbooks: one for photos and one for guests to leave heartfelt voice messages.
After a sweet send-off—complete with guests ringing tiny jingle bells—Adam and Doria made a quick outfit change and rejoined friends for a post-wedding bar hop. A party bus carried them through downtown Sioux Falls with “Drunk in Love” shots, country line dancing at PAve, and festive cheers all around.

When Thérèse Wilhelmi moved back to South Dakota’s Black Hills, she never expected to meet her future husband within days at mass. But that’s where she met Vincent Benzmiller, just outside the SD School of Mines Newman Center.
Vincent jokes, “It was like she was picked up by one of the claw machines and dropped right in front of me!” He made the first move with the classic line, “You come here often?” and invited her to a local swing dance days later.
That dance became their first date, ending with Vincent’s clear declaration: “I have two questions for you. Thérèse, I would like to take you out on a date. Would you like to go on a date with me? And should you agree, would you prefer morning coffee or a mid-morning-ish hike on Sunday?” Thérèse was so elated, she forgot to answer the first question.
For Vincent, the journey of love meant climbing a three-step ladder: wanting, thinking, and knowing. On April 24, 2024, he knew Thérèse was the one. “On that evening, Thérèse explained the etymology of her name, and something clicked. It perfectly aligned with the mission I believe God has given me for my life,” Vincent shares. He texted his mom: “Mom, she’s it.”
Thérèse’s realization came earlier, around their fourth or fifth date, when Vincent opened up about his passion for divine beauty. She smiles, “It wasn’t just poetic; it was purposeful. At that moment, I knew I had met the man I would one day marry.”
Vincent’s proposal was as intentional as their courtship. Under the guise of helping her photographer friend Sarah with a couples shoot, they traveled to Okoboji, Iowa. The day began with a Divine Mercy Chaplet in a canoe, then a holy hour at Vincent’s childhood

The couple chose May 2025 for their wedding, right after Vincent’s college graduation. Thérèse explains, “Unbeknownst to us, it was also the 100th anniversary of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux’s canonization, my patron saint, and the one I was named after!”

parish. Outside the chapel, Vincent led Thérèse to a garden near a statue of Mary and asked her to be his wife and his “Sainthood Accountability Partner for the rest of their lives.” Sarah and Vincent’s sister, Sonja, captured every moment.
They created a shared email account for planning and focused on making their wedding “a great cause for conversation.” They settled on navy and scarlet with gold and ivory accents; colors representing the Divine Mercy: blood and water flowing from Christ’s heart.
“More importantly, we set a shared vision to make our wedding a great cause for conversation,” Thérèse added. “That mindset helped us step away from ‘what I want’ versus ‘what you want’ and instead focus on what God wants. We wanted to share the beauty of the faith with our friends and family.”
On their wedding day, Thérèse treasured the Marian Consecration most. Her bouquet, handcrafted by her mother-in-law, featured two detachable roses, including one for her and one for Vincent to offer to Mary, entrusting their marriage to God.
“The wedding Mass, the sacrament itself, was the absolute highlight,” Vincent says. “It was indescribably beautiful to witness that with all our family and friends.”
A touching moment came when Vincent’s dad performed a surprise original song. “He passed out printed lyrics to everyone, and the entire room sang along. It was incredibly special,” Vincent smiles.
They ended the night with a prayer from Vincent, surrounded by loved ones, deeply aware of the sacredness of what they had just begun.

IF YOU ASK ALLIE HOW SHE MET KYLE, she’ll smile and tell you it all started on what was technically someone else’s date. Their best friends were dating, now engaged, and they just kind of tagged along to play cornhole at Bodega in Sioux City. By the end of the night, something felt different.
That was August 2019. A month later, Kyle and Allie made it official, building their relationship around shared values, rounds of golf, and plenty of time with friends and furry companions.
By 2021, they were starting to talk about forever. “We started casually ring shopping at Gunderson’s just to get ideas,” Allie admits with a smile. “I’m a little picky when it comes to jewelry.” Kyle had other plans brewing.
On Labor Day weekend at his parents’ Big Stone lake home, after finishing a round at the Ortonville course, Allie’s parents casually mentioned a fundraising challenge on the course. They carted out to find a tiny box that Allie assumed was for sign-ups. It wasn’t. Kyle, nerves and all, told her she was the GOAT and proposed right there on the fairway. When they arrived at the lake house, their whole family was waiting to celebrate.
Looking back on it all—the lake proposal, the packed dance floor, the espresso martinis at the altar, Allie smiles and says, “We truly soaked in every moment. That’s what I hope every couple gets to do. It goes by fast, but when you’re really in it? It’s unforgettable.”
Planning began with Allie’s signature enthusiasm, though she admits her early ideas were a bit ambitious. Once they identified their non-negotiables and budget, they moved quickly. The Warrior Hotel in Sioux City was love at first sight, with coordinator Madison Shanks making everything feel easy. Kyle showed up for every venue tour, sealed every envelope, and obviously loved the food tastings.
Their wedding day reflected their concert-loving personalities. After an emotional first look and ceremony, guests cheered with espresso martinis and old fashioneds waiting at the end. But the real party kicked off at the reception, thanks to their live band. The live band was non-negotiable—they wanted a show, not just music. The dance floor stayed packed all night, with “Mr. Brightside” creating one of the most iconic moments.

For couples dreaming of a wedding immersed in natural beauty, Shortgrass Resort in Spearfish, South Dakota, offers a one-of-a-kind setting where serenity, elegance, and nature come together.
“We’re a nature-forward venue,” says Dr. Rachel Headley, owner of Shortgrass Resort. “So, couples who choose us are usually looking for that deeper connection with the land and the experience.”
Shortgrass is a versatile canvas for weddings of all kinds, from intimate gatherings to larger outdoor celebrations. While the indoor reception space accommodates around 30 guests, the expansive grounds offer endless opportunities to create a truly personalized celebration.
“When the resort is reserved for a wedding, the wedding party gets the run of the 52-acre property. This creates a fun transformation, where
the yoga room, with its big mirrors, is transformed for the bride and her party to get ready and relax together,” Rachel shares. “We even included an extra-large restroom to accommodate those big gowns! We really try to think of everything to make the wedding day one of ease, as well as beauty.”
Whether it’s saying “I do” beside a gentle creek, amid golden prairie grasses, or against the backdrop of the surrounding hills, each wedding at Shortgrass is unique.
“The cool part is that you can have a wedding that no one else has,” Rachel explains. “When you look at photos from another couple’s day here, it won’t look like yours. That’s the beauty of the land.”
What sets Shortgrass apart is not just its natural charm but also the thoughtful support couples receive throughout their planning journey. The Shortgrass team works closely with each couple
to bring their vision to life, offering both the freedom to customize and the guidance to make the process seamless.
Enhancing the experience is Meander, the resort’s on-site restaurant, which embodies the same understated elegance as the venue itself. With a talented chef who accommodates a wide range of dietary needs, couples can craft a wedding menu that reflects their tastes without the stress.
“Our executive chef, mixologist, and general manager love creating magic for weddings. Many of our brides will tell us that they ‘trust the Shortgrass team’ to create amazing dishes, signature cocktails, and an overall exquisite experience,” Rachel notes.
And no celebration is complete without a signature drink. The resort’s bar offers handcrafted cocktails tailored to the couple’s preferences or wedding theme, adding a final personal touch to an already unforgettable day.
At its heart, Shortgrass Resort is about more than just beautiful weddings. It’s about creating space for meaningful moments surrounded by nature, supported by a caring team, and infused with the kind of peaceful energy that allows couples to truly enjoy their day.
“We wanted to build a place where people could make memories, without the stress,” Rachel affirms. “Just joy, beauty, and connection.”
For those seeking a wedding that feels both grounded and extraordinary, Shortgrass Resort offers a timeless place to begin forever.
“It is such a delight to share these special moments with couples and their closest friends and family. It’s a day of joy and happiness, and it’s such an honor that our brides choose Shortgrass for one of the most important days of their lives,” Rachel adds.

Alanah Steeg and Marcus Rodriguez recognized the unique setting that Oscar Carl Vineyard offers.
“When Marcus and I were searching for a venue, we were looking for something intimate, romantic, and truly one-of-a-kind,” Alanah recalls. “We had a hard time finding a place that checked all the boxes—until we discovered Oscar Carl Vineyard! From the moment we walked in, we knew it was the perfect place for our wedding. The space is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, blending elegance with a cozy, eclectic charm that made us and our guests feel instantly at home.”
Even though their wedding day was marked by unexpected flooding across the area that affected family and friends, the day still turned out to be everything they dreamed of and more.
“Melanie, Roy, and the vineyard staff handled everything with such professionalism and care, ensuring that the experience was seamless and stress-free for us. In the middle of chaos, we felt calm, supported, and completely present in the moment,” Alanah shares.
With reflections caught in a vintage mirror of mother and bride, an emotional first look shared in the vineyard, and vows spoken under the flowing grapevines of the covered patio in front of cherished friends and family, Alanah and Marcus became Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez.
Located just minutes from Sioux City and I-29, Oscar Carl Vineyard boasts not only amazing views of their vineyards, but also a large selection of their own native Iowa wines. Their signature wine, Loesscato, was the 2024 winner of the prestigious “Governor’s Cup Trophy Award” by the Iowa Commercial Wine Competition. You’ll be proud to serve your guests any of Oscar Carl’s wines and have your first toast together as a married couple, like Alanah and Marcus did, with a glass of Loesscato.
“We are so grateful we got to celebrate one of the most meaningful days of our lives at Oscar Carl Vineyard! Looking back, the flooding didn’t take away from our day—it added to our story and made it all the more memorable,” Alanah reflects. “The vineyard’s warmth, flexibility, and charm turned what could have been a disaster into something beautiful.”
Your wedding day —A timeless treasure of memories and promises made to your forever love, surrounded by your favorite people at your new favorite place: Oscar Carl Vineyard. Memories of yesterday, joy for the present, and hope for the future. Cheers to love!

Presented by Kate Jones Studios
The most breathtaking wedding photos aren’t about perfect poses or elaborate setups, they’re about emotion. The laughter, the nerves, the unexpected tears, these are the fleeting moments that make your wedding photos unforgettable. When you let go of comparisons and stop chasing picture-perfect inspiration on social media, you open yourself up to images that are uniquely yours. Inspiration is a great tool, but too much of it can make your photos feel over-edited or overly staged. The key is to stay present. Embrace the real moments. The messy, joyful, unfiltered ones that truly tell your love story.
While it’s tempting to hand your photographer a long checklist, it can actually take away from the natural rhythm of the day. Trust their expertise to spot and capture meaningful moments as they unfold. Instead of listing every shot, meet before the wedding to discuss your priorities: key people, important traditions, and sentimental details. Think about what makes your celebration special. Is there a hidden message in your dress, an heirloom accessory, or a loved one officiating your ceremony? Communicating these personal touches ensures your photographer is ready to capture them naturally, without pausing the magic.

When it comes to posing, authenticity shines through most when you’re relaxed. Your photographer knows how to guide you into flattering light and angles, so your only job is to enjoy the moment.
A little preparation goes a long way. Set aside at least an hour for your photographer to capture styling and detail shots early in the day. This quiet window allows them to focus on rings, florals, stationery, and accessories before the wedding whirlwind begins. Coordinate with your florist to ensure the bouquet and boutonnieres are ready when your photographer arrives. Finally, assign a trusted friend or family member to help gather groups for portraits. This keeps things running smoothly and allows you to stay in the moment.

Photographer Tip: Schedule an engagement session with your photographer. This can help ease nerves and teach you what feels most natural in front of the camera. It’s a low-pressure chance to connect, practice, and see how your personalities mesh before the big day.

Some love stories feel destined from the start, and for Will and Kelsey Steineke, it began long before the wedding planning ever started. They met as teenagers and officially began dating in 2014. Ten years later, Will proposed in Nashville on the morning of Kelsey’s 26th birthday, marking the perfect start to their next chapter together. Their wedding was a vibrant mix of modern style, vintage charm, and heartfelt creativity, a celebration ten years in the making filled with love, laughter, and perfectly retro flair.
Kelsey envisioned a modern-retro celebration filled with bold personality and sentimental touches. “I wanted a vintage green and black-and-white checker theme with fun, organic details,” she shared. Her favorite project was hand-painting the wavy checkerboard pillars her dad built, a creative detail that became the centerpiece of their decor.
Their venue, Monick Yards, was still under construction when they began planning, but fate stepped in when they won a social media giveaway. Once they toured, they instantly fell in love with the mix of organic elements, wood rafters, retro accents, and bubble lights that paired perfectly with their disco ball and baby’s breath clouds
Green, Kelsey’s lifelong favorite color, set the tone for the day. She selected a rich, vintage shade that popped against crisp black and white. Vintage green satin bridesmaid dresses, single-stem white roses, black dinnerware, and green glassware completed the look, perfectly matched to the thank-you cards she designed herself.
Her wedding gown was another full-circle moment. She had saved a photo of it two years earlier, tracked down the designer, and found it at Rhylan Lang in Omaha. “I fell in love with the custom low V-back,” she said. Stitches by Ardis later added bubble sleeves and buttons down the back to complete the retro vibe.
A graphic designer by trade, the bride poured her heart into creating nearly every detail: hand-painting decor, designing invitations and programs, crafting bouquets, and styling accessories like green velvet heels, a long ruffle veil, and her mother’s vintage pearl earrings.
Her favorite part of planning was designing and shopping for decor. “Creating every detail was a dream,” she said. The biggest challenge? Finding the perfect green heels. “I returned so many pairs before finally finding them a month before the wedding!”
The most memorable moments came during the ceremony. Seeing her groom tear up during their first look and vows is something she’ll never forget. Their ceremony also reflected a piece of their history, they sealed love letters in a Buzz Lightyear time capsule engraved with their favorite saying, “I love you to infinity and beyond,” and she walked down the aisle to the same song they danced to at homecoming.
Her advice to other brides is simple: trust your instincts. “Don’t let other people’s opinions outweigh your own, and ask for help. Your friends and family want to see your vision come to life.”

From boardrooms to bouquets. Amber DuHoux left a 20-year career in finance to chase her wedding dream. Today, her team delivers 57-plus flawless celebrations a year, with word-of-mouth clients fueling her growing success.
By Ingrid Hayward
Planning a wedding is no small feat, but in Sioux Falls and beyond, Details Matter by Amber makes it look effortless. Amber founded the business as a passionate planner with a gift for turning visions into beautifully executed events, born from a very personal place.
“I was always the over-the-top party mom,” Amber says. “I loved planning every birthday and celebration, but what really pushed me into this world was planning my daughter’s wedding.” During that experience, Amber realized her true calling: helping others have the stress-free celebration she wanted for her own family. “I didn’t have the typical Mother of the Bride Day,” she recalls, “I regret it a tiny bit. My daughter and her husband had a completely stress-free day, and that was worth it, but I missed things during the celebration, so now I want to make sure that other mothers get their day as well.”
That first wedding also led to her very first client. “One of my daughter’s bridesmaids wanted her mom to have help, and I wanted her mom not to miss the day,” Amber shares. “That became my first paid gig, and it just grew from there.”
Before launching Details Matter by Amber full-time, Amber spent 20 years as a Director of Finance and Operations. When the company she worked for was sold in 2021, she decided to take a leap of faith and pour her business expertise, organization skills, and creativity into event planning. That experience gave her the foundation to manage large-scale logistics with precision and calm, skills that now define her approach and set her apart.

Amber describes herself as more of an event manager than a coordinator. “I’m deeply involved in making sure everything and everyone comes together smoothly,” she explains. “It’s about more than schedules; it’s about managing the entire experience so my clients can be fully present. I always try to anticipate problems before they happen so that on the day of the event, small issues never become bigger ones.” Amber adds, “I take pride in being a good vendor partner as well as an event manager. Working collaboratively with other professionals ensures every event runs seamlessly and beautifully.”
What sets Amber apart from the competition is that she provides floral and other décor options, giving couples a complete, curated experience that blends logistics, design, and personal style. She also credits her fantastic team for the company’s success. “I always tell them, we are the calmest people in the room, even if it’s on fire,” Amber states. With their support, Amber has been very fortunate to grow her business from 8–12 events per year to more than 57 this year, mostly by word of mouth. Together, they deliver full and partial planning, day-of management, décor with a full inventory, and both live and artificial floral design, ensuring every detail aligns perfectly while couples and their families enjoy the moments that matter most.
With locations in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Southwest Minnesota, Details Matter by Amber proudly serves couples across South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Whether it’s an intimate gathering or a grand affair, Amber’s mission remains the same: to deliver beauty, organization, and peace of mind, so that every couple can enjoy a day that feels perfectly them.

Marriage marks the start of an exciting new chapter, one filled with shared dreams, future planning, and, for many couples, house hunting. If you’re newly married and ready to buy your first home together, you’re not alone. Many couples in Rapid City and across the Black Hills are making the leap into homeownership just as they say “I do.”
But merging two lives also often means merging two homes. Whether you’re moving in together for the first time or selling separate homes to create one shared space, there’s a lot to consider. Here’s your local guide to making smart, stress-free decisions as you step into homeownership together.
Before diving into listings, sit down together and talk about your priorities. Do you want to be in the heart of Rapid City or prefer the quieter pace of towns like Spearfish, Hill City, or Custer? Is a fixer-upper part of the dream, or would a move-in-ready home be better for your busy lifestyle?
Discuss:
• Budget & location
• Style & layout
• Commute & work needs
• Future plans (kids, pets, home office)
You may not agree on everything, but it’s essential to start with clear, shared goals.

A joint mortgage requires combining financial profiles. Even if one spouse previously owned a home, you’ll want to apply together as co-borrowers to determine your full buying power. Pre-approval also gives you a competitive edge in a market like Rapid City, where well-priced homes can move quickly.
Great Peaks Tip: Talk to a local lender who understands the nuances of the Black Hills market and can guide you through special programs for first-time buyers, veterans, or rural home purchases. We work closely with some of the top mortgage lenders in the area, and would be happy to make the connection!
If you’re combining two households, you might be selling two properties before buying one. Timing and strategy are everything. Here’s how to do it without feeling overwhelmed:
• Evaluate both properties to decide which should be listed first. If one home has more equity or market appeal, start there.
• Stage each home to appeal to buyers, even if one of you has already moved out. A fresh coat of paint, tidy landscaping, and neutral decor go a long way.
• Work with a real estate team that can coordinate both sales and your purchase. This helps you avoid a gap between selling and moving into your new home.
Great Peaks Tip: Homes in Rapid City, Box Elder, and Black Hawk can move fast depending on the season. Leverage that speed, but also plan for temporary housing just in case your perfect home isn’t ready when you sell.

You might come from very different tastes, think farmhouse chic meets modern minimalism. Use that to your advantage. A home that blends your personalities and meets your practical needs will feel more like a true “ours” rather than “mine” or “yours.”
Things like:
• Dual office or flex space
• Garage or storage space for combining your belongings
• Outdoor area for entertaining
• Room to grow together
Buying your first home as newlyweds isn’t just a financial decision; it’s an emotional one. It’s where holidays will be hosted, where memories will be made, and where your lives will unfold together.
Take time to:
• Purge duplicate items beforehand
• Decorate together so your space feels shared from day one
• Set a home budget to avoid surprises and arguments
The Black Hills region offers a unique mix of modern amenities and small-town charm, making it the perfect place for newlyweds to settle down.
And while combining lives and real estate may seem daunting, with the right preparation, the right professionals, and a little patience, it can be one of the most rewarding steps you take as a couple.
