40 years of caring!

I have been the CEO of Community Home Health & Hospice for the most recent 11 of our 40 year history. Among other things, one of my most enjoyable duties as CEO is to build relationships with staff, volunteers, donors, and the community. In my years here, I’ve gotten to know so many in our community who shared their stories with me about the impact of the truly remarkable services we provide. I have nothing but gratitude for the Greg Pang, President & CEO excellence of our staff, the generosity of our donors and volunteers, and the support of our Board of Directors. All of us working together with a single goal in mind can accomplish amazing feats.

As we enter our 40th year, we celebrate our partnership with the community!

We want everyone who touches our agency to feel that we made a difference in their life, brought peace, alleviated pain and anxiety, and helped them achieve their healthcare goals. Hope in bloom Visit the E. Kenneth Henderson Memorial Garden to experience hope in bloom. Since the garden was opened in 2014, generations of families have found this to be a beautiful place where they can reflect on special memories of loved ones.

You are invited to stop in and enjoy the ever-changing scenery for a new and meaningful experience each visit.

Garden hours are Monday through Friday, 8am–5pm. For a special appointment, call 360.703.0336.

Memorial bricks in the garden pathways provide a lasting tribute for loved ones. Available in two sizes, the bricks make a pattern that wind through the garden. A single brick (4’ x 8”) holds one name and costs $200. A double brick (8” x 8”) holds one or two names and costs $400.

For veterans, an American flag may be added to a double brick for no additional charge. This is one of the many ways that we honor veterans.

Memorial brick purchases are charitable donations that support memorial garden maintenance. Orders are welcome year-round. Engraving takes place each year in May. Bricks may be ordered online at www.chhh.org or contact Heidi at 360.414.5405 or give@chhh.org.

This year, Community Home Health & Hospice turns 40, a milestone few local nonprofit organizations reach. Generations of families have come to us for help and it has been a great honor to meet the community’s needs. The success of our mission to provide excellent healthcare has always depended on the thoughtful and generous support of families right here in our community.

Please join us as we look back at some milestones‌ 1977 Public health nurse Lorraine Berndt established Community Home Health to meet the needs of the elderly population in Cowlitz County.

1978 Hospice program initiated. Services expanded to Wahkiakum County.

1980 Services expanded to Columbia County, OR. 1984 Opened the first freestanding hospice care center in Washington, located in Longview.

1988 Expanded services to Clark County and opened an office in Vancouver.

1990 The first year we served over 1,000 patients.

1997 Expanded the hospice care center in Longview to 12 patient rooms.

1999 Established free children and teen grief support groups and held the first grief camp for children.

2011 First hospice organization in Washington to join We Honor Veterans.

2012 Opened the James Avery Grief Center in Longview with specialized areas to provide grief support for all ages. Held the first grief retreat for teens.

2014 Dedicated the Ken Henderson Memorial Garden adjacent to the grief center in Longview.

2015 Opened the newest freestanding hospice care center in Washington, located in Vancouver.

2016 Provided $1,006,403 in charity care to patients in our community.

Today we deliver home care, home health, home hospice and inpatient hospice care to over 4,300 patients annually. We would not be able to celebrate 40 years of caring without you!

$1 million gift honoring a life

The Elaine and Don Heimbigner Hospice Care Center

Vancouver businessman Don Heimbigner has made a $1 million gift to Community Home Health & Hospice in honor of his wife, Elaine. Don and Elaine knew each other since they were toddlers. Don enjoyed a long career in the sports industry. He employed many young people in their first jobs at Don’s Sports Center and patented a bowling ball finger grip that was highly successful. Elaine was by his side as office manager and constant companion through 58 years.

We opened Washington State’s newest hospice care center in the Salmon Creek neighborhood of Vancouver, WA in 2015. In recognition of Don’s gift, we have named the new care center the Elaine and Don Heimbigner Hospice Care Center. Don said, “Throughout our marriage, everyone referred to us as ‘Don and Elaine Heimbigner.’ Now she will finally be first.”

Elaine was a long time patient for whom we provided in-home care and hospice until her passing last year.

Don’s gift enables us to expand our nonprofit mission to thousands more in our community who need support.

This extraordinary gift is for the Seasons of Hope Grief Center and Memorial Garden to be constructed next to the care center in Salmon Creek. The grief center is modeled after the James Avery Grief Center in Longview.

It will include specialized rooms for children, teens and Future Seasons of Hope Grief Center adults. The project is now in design with groundbreaking Drawing provided by Collins Architectural Group, P.S. planned for April and a grand opening in 2018.

14 staff members displaced In mid-March, heavy rain and melting mountain snow resulted in water seeping up through the foundation of our 1000 12th Avenue building in Longview. This is the building that houses administration and the James Avery Grief Center. The water came up through cracks in the concrete foundation, which makes the space unusable. Downstairs were 14 staff, including the finance department, home health referral center and information technology as well as our training room.

As of this writing, we are removing any materials that would pose a health risk to our staff. We are assessing the possible cost and various options for preventing future water intrusion and looking at the potential cost for repair.

We are challenged with providing space for the 14 staff who were impacted. We may need funding for repairs and office space on a temporary basis. New friends Several Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington board members attended our Community Cares Breakfast last year when we launched the Community Cares Capital Campaign to build a grief support center and memorial garden in Vancouver. Their presence and comments inspired us!

Most recently, they made a gift of $5,000 designated for equipment and furnishings in our Seasons of Hope Grief Center to be constructed adjacent to the Elaine and Don Heimbigner Hospice Care Center in Vancouver. They also pledged $400 per month for food that will be prepared for our patients and families twice a week by a volunteer. In addition, plans are underway for a gift of $10,000 to provide respite support for our hospice family caregivers.

Gifts from the heart Dr. Larry McRae was part of our agency’s history. He served on our board of directors and many committees over the decades. He inspired us to establish the Community Legacy Society, which recognizes generous people who include Community Home Health & Hospice in their estate plans. As a founding member, he talked about how he wanted to help families in need beyond his lifetime. He encouraged others to do the same.

To honor Dr. McRae’s legacy of caring, his wife Carol established the McRae Endowment for Program Excellence. The purpose of the endowment is to support programs such as patient care, medical equipment, grief support and extraordinary needs. She said, “He would have been proud to have the family name on an endowment.”

When Dr. McRae died, Dr. Richard Nau was seeking a way to honor his life and help other families. “Dr. McRae was kind, caring and gentle in his practice and he was the same way as a father to his children.” Dr. Nau chose to give stock that had significantly increased in value over the years. He was able to make a generous contribution to the McRae Endowment and enjoyed substantial tax savings.
