This issue of Reflections is all about you! As we reflect on 40 years of caring, we know that we simply would not be here without community support. Every nonprofit agency is a partnership between the service organization and the community that supports it. In so many ways, supporters have made it possible to provide much-needed services at a critical time. In this issue you’ll read about opportunities to partner with us, our thankful hearts for our supporters, and the names of the many community members who have donated to our mission. Our role in our ongoing partnership is to continue providing the highest quality care with dignity, compassion, and…yes…love. We are honored that YOU are one of our supporters! Thank you!!

There are several ways your gifts may be designated; one way is charity care. If you choose charity care, you help provide care for a patient who lacks the ability to pay all or part of the cost of their services; as they recover from surgery or an accident at home, manage a chronic illness or are approaching their end-of-life journey.

Chaplain Linda Beattie Inlow said, “Over the past few years, I have seen a rise in requests for charity care. We have opened our doors to several individuals who were brought to us through hospital emergency departments and had no home or immediate relatives to care for them.

One gentleman, Michael, died in our care after nearly two months in our Longview Hospice Care Center. He was quiet, unobtrusive and extremely grateful for the care he received in our hands. “ It is through your generosity that patients like Michael receive the care they need.

Community support brings hope

Drawing provided by Collins Architectural Group, PS. Seasons of Hope Grief Center will be built next to the Elaine and Don Heimbigner Hospice Care Center in Vancouver, WA.

Thanks to support from individuals, families, volunteers, organizations, businesses, foundations and the State of Washington Community Building Fund, we are well on our way to bringing free grief support to everyone in Clark County in this new, dedicated space. Your support brings hope!

A memorial garden will lie between the two buildings, providing a beautiful place to enjoy nature and reflect on special memories. You will be invited to stop in and enjoy the everchanging scenery for a new and meaningful experience each visit. The garden will be open and available to the entire community every day.

Thousands of lives will be impacted for generations to come. Community support has made this project possible.

40th anniversary charity care fundraiser Generous supporters contributed a record-breaking $172,000 at our 40th anniversary charity care fundraiser, On the red carpet: 40 years of caring.

More than 450 guests “partied with a purpose.”

Longview Hospice Care Center volunteer Jill Tossberg told her compelling story of hope and healing. Guests responded with generous gifts to support charity care. Last year, we provided greater than $1 million in charity care.

Legacy gifts bring hope Those who make planned gifts through their estates support patients who will need our care in the future. This brings hope to families.

Legacy gifts made it possible for us to create the James Avery Grief Center and the E. Kenneth Henderson Memorial Garden in Longview. Other legacy gifts have provided for ongoing patient care, medical equipment, hospice care center furnishings, support for Pet Peace of Mind, staff education and care for hospice patients with extraordinary needs.

The most common type of legacy gift is a bequest. A bequest is generally a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. You can choose to designate that a bequest be used for a general or specific purpose so you have peace of mind knowing that your gift will be used exactly as you wish.

If you are considering a bequest, please let us know. We will be happy to work with you and your attorney to help you take care of your heirs, identify ways to give, meet your charitable objectives and take advantage of tax benefits.

Working together Longview Junior Service League members and their families adopted the E. Kenneth Henderson Memorial Garden and landscaped areas around the Longview Hospice Care Center this spring. They brought tools, a dump truck and their families. AFS Exchange Student Raul Masanes from Bolivia was able to participate as well. Together, they worked to clean up and haul away debris. Then they returned a few weeks later with new plants, flowers and containers. They made sure the garden looked beautiful, the courtyards were vibrant and inviting and each patient had a view of blooms.

Visiting families enjoyed seeing children and parents working together.

When Longview Junior Service League was finished, it was time for the final touch. That’s when the C & R Tractor and Landscaping crew arrived with enough fresh bark for the entire Henderson Garden and all of the landscaped areas.
