I’ve had a passion for architecture ever since I was a little kid. I always loved technical drawings, drawing houses and playing with Legos. My biggest inspiration in architecture is Mies Van der Rohe and the Barcelona Pavilion. The first time I saw it, I was left in awe by such a simple yet impacting project. I hope to one day make an impact to architecture and design.

WHY ARCHITECTURE?

3

MY FAVORITE COLOR

YES! It is ORANGE. I honestly don’t have a reason as to why it is my favorite color but I am just attracted and gravitated towards it. I find it to be such a cool and sleek color. This color makes me happy. Some people hate it but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , I love it.

I don’t mind are GREEN, BLUE, WHITE and BLACK.

Honduras

7

Honduras, like many Latin American countries, is full of color, life and art. Honduran food has a mixture of many different cultures from all over the word. Cuisine rich in flavors varying between sweet and savory and very colorful dishes with uses of many fruits and vegetables. Honduras has beautiful and colorful rainforests where it is home to the national bird, the Scarlet Macaw, which is one of the most colorful birds in the world. The streets are filled with street art and the architecture is very colorful as the houses are painted colors such as green, pink and blue. Locals love hosting carnivals where they perform many of their traditional dances and where their traditional outfits.

Ecuador has a very unique culture that is full of vibrant colors, from their beautiful nature and exotic animals to the markets that have very colorful tapestries and handmade crafts made by the local artisans. Ecuador’s culture is a mix of their indigenous people and the European colonial influence making almost all of their natives to have a rich and diverse background. Similar to Honduras they are full of street art, traditional clothing and dancing and many vibrant colors. Ecuadorians are known for having rituals and holidays where they give thanks to the gods their indigenous people believe in, where they wear colorful outfits and masks.

M.2 Color + Theory

11

Notes

- Theory explains the concepts and ideas involved in describing and rationalizing phenomena about a particular subject. Theories, for the most part, are unproven and continue to be studied to provide additional insight into the particular subject.

- Johannes Itten taught at bauhaus in 1919. Itten wrote several books in color theory, including The Elements of Color and The Art of Color. Itten developed the twelve-pointed color star, where he explored cold-warm contrasts. Itten was a textile designer, Swiss born painter and color theory teacher. He was first to explore color through shapes and forms using astrological, cultural traditions and symbols.

-Without light there is no color. Colored light consists of a series of wavelengths, each varying in length and strength. The colored light we see is called the visible spectrum.

Rietveld Schroder House

13
Gerrit Rietveld

Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)

Gerrit Rietveld was a dutch furniture designer and architect. His early career started by working in his father’s furniture workshop where he mastered his craft in furniture making. His furniture became world-famous including pieces such as the zig-zag chair and the red and blue chair. Later into his career, Rietveld’s major projects were architectural projects, with one of his most famous projects being the Rietveld Schroder house.

14

Rietveld designed this house in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1924 for Truus Schroder-Schrader after the death of her husband. She decided that she wanted to live in a much smaller home, and one that was most of all, more modern. The house is the only house that was designed in complete accordance to the De Stijl style, which used primary color and pure ideas. The house is considered to have flexible interior spaces and a planar quality that makes it distinguishable and unique. Although built in the 1920s, the house continues to impress architects and interior

Rietveld Schroder House

15

The ground floor plan of the house is where Rietveld started his design. Both the living and sleeping quarter were held in the ground floor which could easily be rearranged because it was designed with sliding walls, Big designers such as Aino Alto and Mart Stam visited the house and were left impressed by the design. The house didn't have any sense of hierarchical arrangement and was completely flexible, the upstairs had collapsable walls centered around the central staircase which allows the children of the house to use collapse the walls during the day for play space and bring them up at night for privacy.

Color Palette RED BLUE YELLOW

Rievelt designed this house completely using the De Stijl style pioneered by Piet Mondrian and Theo Van Doesburg. It was a movement consisting of abstract art using precise geometric forms, and the primary colors, red, blue and yellow.

17

Conclusion

Gerrit Rietveld designed this project almost perfectly in my opinion. Architecturally, the project provided many innovative design solutions that are still being used today, Aesthetically, Rietveld did an amazing job using the De Stijl and the use of the Mondrian style work. The white is very pure in the project and the primary color serving as the detail is very fascinating to look at. This house drew attention from the moment it was designed and continues to be iconic today.

M.4 Color + Perception

20

Notes

- Programming is often one of the first steps in a project, and designers gather data during the design process.

- Color is a critical aspect of design, and designers must carefully consider it since human characteristics affect how color is perceived. Designers can manipulate color contrast to create a balanced and harmonious space.

- By utilizing Color Forecasting, designers can predict consumer trends, allowing them to integrate popular trends into their designs. It's essential to keep clients informed about the design decisions throughout the process.

M.5 Color + Environment - Life of Pi

22

Summary

The movie, Life of Pi, is a great film with amazing use of color. The use of color is very well thought out as you can almost see a different color palette in nearly every scene. The colors are used to represent mood, character development and symbolize many lessons through the movie. We see a young man grow and mature through a very challenging journey of losing his loved ones, finding faith and religions, moving to a new country, the use of very vibrant colors during the film just add support to his long journey.

23

The use of the color orange is very symbolic in this movie. This color is seen many times throughout the movie. The main use of if was through the color of the boat that Pi used in his journey and the color of the tiger, Richard Parker. In the film the color orange is used to symbolise hope and survival.

Orange 24

The use of the color blue is symbolic to the film to show Pi’s growth in terms of wisdom and faith. From early age, Pi was challenged by religion and faith and was interested by Christianity, the blue window shutters in the church show how he is embracing a new religion. In the other two images it shows Pi’s growth of wisdom through this difficult journey he’s gone through.

25
Blue

Green

The color green is very prominent in the movie from the beginning to the end. The green zoo, the green forests in India to the green island. The green is used to symbolize life, using vibrant shades of green through nature with green island and through the reflection of green light being casted when he looks into the water.

26

M.6 Color + Health

27

Notes

- Our perception of color can be influenced by factors such as age, gender, culture, health, and beliefs.

- Some people believe that certain colors have health benefits. For instance, red is said to increase blood pressure, adrenaline, and breathing rate, while pink settles the stomach. Blue is believed to slow the heartbeat and decrease temperature, and yellow is thought to speed up metabolism. Silver is said to heal hormonal imbalances.

- Color blindness can manifest in different forms, with deuteranopia being the most common type, resulting in reds and greens appearing yellow. Protanopia makes it harder to distinguish between red, green, and some blue shades, while tritanopia causes confusion between blues and greens and between yellows and violets.

28

M.7 Color + Balance

29

Notes

- Color balance refers to the relationship between different hues and their perceived visual weight in a larger composition.

- Successful color design requires consideration of color's relationships with architecture and design elements.

- The three types of spatial balance in color design are symmetry, asymmetry, and radial, and four types of color balance are achieved through application: value contrast, hue balance, intensity contrast, and size of colored area.

Macromedia used to work in a building on Townsend Street. Now, Adobe has rented more space in another building nearby to fit all its employees. They designed the new office to match their new way of working. Adobe takes up 2 and a half floors in the 4-story building, which is about 44,000 square feet.

46

Conclusion

Throughout this course I was really able to learn a lot about the importance of color in design. I believe that the color behind a design might be one of the most crucial aspects towards whatever design it is that you’re working on. The color influences the way that users feel within a space and the way that you perceive the space. There are many ways that you can implement color into architecture, whether through materials of the walls, floors, furniture finishes. This is important to be used properly because it can cause for the whole design to be ruined based on whatever colors you choose, it can cause someone to feel uncomfortable in a space and not use it the way the program was intended for. This course has taught me a lot about the use of color and about graphic design and how to properly present things.
