Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)

Gerrit Rietveld was a dutch furniture designer and architect. His early career started by working in his father’s furniture workshop where he mastered his craft in furniture making. His furniture became world-famous including pieces such as the zig-zag chair and the red and blue chair. Later into his career, Rietveld’s major projects were architectural projects, with one of his most famous projects being the Rietveld Schroder house.

Rietveld designed this house in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1924 for Truus Schroder-Schrader after the death of her husband. She decided that she wanted to live in a much smaller home, and one that was most of all, more modern. The house is the only house that was designed in complete accordance to the De Stijl style, which used primary color and pure ideas. The house is considered to have flexible interior spaces and a planar quality that makes it distinguishable and unique.
