DESIGN BRIEF What problem I´m i trying to solve?

The need for a artistic space in this area is very important; becouse it can reduce anxiety and stress, and the need for a What is your target audience?

Targeted audience for the site will be mostly artists; people that enjoy art galleries( 16-80 ) When and how will they be using your space?

The space will be used as a exhibition museum.

This projet is has is purpose to demostrate two contrasts of very similar parts of the same industry; entertainment! It connects with my manifesto in which talks about Pop Art and Design. I want to cennect the two spaces with de design; something that supost to fit together. This site is suposto be a space where artist come here to create; explore their craft, expose to the public with the premise to change the artist that has his art on the walls, every month, and the space can change as well depending if the artist wants to. It has the opportunity to open the space to the public, in the front area will have big sliding doors. It will create a more art apreciotion to the public; to the artist; and the city, and boost small artists to new people

Bull Yard (Previously The Precinct) & Coventry Point were built in the 1960s-1970s to regenerate the destroyed buildings around the South of Coventry City Centre.

Coventry Point was demolished in 2019, and Bull Yard is currently in the process of demolition (TBC 2022) to make way for a new Mixed-Use development, and to make way for the Coventry Very Light Rail Line

Bull Yard Shelton Square leads out from its southwest corner into Bull Yard (1965, Terence Gregory, City Architect). Bull Yard is a square marking the entrance into the shopping precinct and is perhaps the most successful of all the secondary entrances. The east side is open to the junction of Hertford and New Union Streets. Its design is a significant change in style from the earlier shopping precinct and perhaps marks the change of City Architect from Arthur Ling to Terence Gregory. The common theme of brickwork and window panels is abandoned in favour of something more contemporary though again the module is maintained. The ground floors of the north and south sides are shops while, on the west side, is the Three Tuns public house, the only pub to survive in the shopping centre. Its elevation to Bull Yard is a heavily moulded cast concrete abstract mural by William Mitchell. The first floor on all three sides of the square overhangs the ground floor to form a canopy, thus continuing the canopy/ arcade requirement set by Gibson. The first floor walls are closely centred bronze clad projecting mullions with glazed and black enamelled steel panels between. This originally contrasted very sharply with the white stone of the Shelton Square block and with the white concrete of the car park parapet wall on the north side, but these have now discoloured. The square was originally the access to the Barracks multi-storey car park to the north, but was pedestrianised in a subsequent phase following the formation of a tunnel access under Hertford Street. The access remains however, adjacent to the Three Tuns, compromising the square’s enclosure.

POPULATION ACTIVITY

Coventry Demographics Over 66% of the city’s population is White British. Of the remaining residents, 7.2% are White (non-British), 5.5% are black, and over 16% are Asian, which far exceeds the national average.The 2011 Census shows that over 53% of Coventry residents identify as Christian, while Islam is the second most-followed religion. Twenty-three percent of the population do not identify with a religion.

There is also a large population of students that reside in Coventry for at least 12 months, with approximately 15,000 of these students originating from outside of the UK.

HOUSING

The whole place is imbued with the values of internationalism, reconciliation and rebirth. Coventry’s response to this catastrophe is central to why I find its built environment so moving. It is sometimes asked why the Second World War did not give rise to monuments to compete with Lutyens’s Thiepval Memorial.

The demolition of buildings such as Alison and Peter Smithson’s Robin Hood Gardens and John Madin’s Birmingham Central Library will be viewed with the same bewildered regret as the loss of Euston Arch. A change of heart is inevitable, but it will come too late for many of the finest buildings and civic set pieces of the Victorian era.

As Britain’s Detroit, it was inevitable that the city’s replanning would be dominated by the car. The reversal of Coventry’s economic fortunes, as deindustrialisation began to bite, was experienced with particular harshness. Released in 1981, the song ‘Ghost Town’ (1981), by The Specials, expressed the sense of urban crisis in Thatcher’s Britain.

COVENTRY RENOVATIONS The plans have been criticised by the Coventry Society, which has pointed out no affordable housing is planned for the scheme, despite a requirement for 25 percent of the new homes to fall into this category. The society claims this is unacceptable for a project set to receive £98.8m in public funding.

A Financial Viability Assessment carried out on behalf of the applicant concluded the plan is “technically unviable” as it would cost £390m to complete and only be worth around £297m when it is finished. Which has led to affordable housing being dropped from the project.

TERRY URBAN Terry Urban was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 23, 1977. After graduating school he moved to San Diego, California to pursue a career in Skateboarding. It was in San Diego where Terry was first introduced to Turntablism. Urban moved back to his hometown of Cleveland and began to DJ and also paint graffiti. In 2004 he was hired to be a DJ on a local Cleveland radio station WENZ and then quickly after was hired as a DJ with his own show at Sirius Satellite Radio. Urban’s career as a DJ began to flourish and he became less interested in graffiti. In 2006 Terry decided to pursue his career as DJ and moved to New York City.

Terry began to work on music and started to produce his own remixes which have received accolades from such greats as Coldplay, Jay Z, Kanye West and Drake. In 2015 looking for another creative outlet, Urban began to paint once again. Over the past years, Terry Urban has completely immersed himself into his work and has exhibited his paintings in many solo shows.

Cleveland - Ohio ( 44 )

Urban’s style is heavily influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Neo-expressionism, in which he is less concerned with accurate execution of his subjects and more concerned with exploring the possibilities of abstraction. Urban was interested in art as a child and began to paint graffiti. His music career as a DJ, on the other hand, took off, and his painting took a second place. Urban’s DJ career stretched more than a decade, but he was seeking for a more artistic outlet in life. Urban began painting again in 2015, thanks to the recommendation of a close friend. Urban has entirely immersed himself in his art in recent years, exhibiting his paintings in several solo exhibits.

SEYMOUR LIPTON Seymour Lipton (6 November 1903 – 15 December 1986) was an American abstract expressionist sculptor. He was a member of the New York School who gained widespread recognition in the 1950s. He initially trained as a dentist but focused on sculpture from 1932. His early choices of medium changed from wood to lead and then to bronze, and he is best known for his work in metal. He made several technical innovations, including brazing nickel-silver rods onto sheets of Monel to create rust resistant forms.

His work is included in the Phillips Collection, the Albright–Knox Art Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

New York - New York (age of death 83)

R U I PA L H A Rui Palha differentiates himself with the stories he tells in black and white. No one has photographed this town like him, and that makes him not only a street photographer. It makes him an Author. Born in 1953 he lives in Lisbon, where he mades most of his work.

“Photography is a hobby since the 14 years of age. I had my own darkroom, but to be honest, I only liked, since I was a kid, to “press the button” in the streets.

I felt always amazed, hypnotized even, with the movement of people, with their expressions, their reactions… I felt it was a fantastic challenge trying to capture all the bustle of everyday life and a way to learn a lot about the surrounding world.”

A N A LY Z I N G M U S E U M S Most museums use the same ideas and principles regarding to the interior circulation of a space.

In the space we can observe that they´ve used panels to divide the space into smaller and more individual open spaces; by arrangin the sapce circulation has more fluidity.

They have a good area in between the walls for clear walkthrough.

In terms of lighting we can see that they have used natural light for backlight perpose it illuminates the top part of the ceiling depending what time of the day. There is also recessed light directed to paintings 2 The image is a expressionism space. The space is arranged where they have expresionist paintings mouted on the walls and some expresionim sculptures on the ground floor mouted on a glass box.

This museum was one of the inspirations for my design were there is two of the same art style in two diferent ways to express it.

The third picture is an open space museum where the focus is in the walls, and some esculptures in the open floor space. the circulation is very coherent the overall space is the circulation space

Some recent exhibitions and workshops

Tate is an institution that houses, in a network of four art galleries, the United Kingdom’s national collection of British art, and international modern and contemporary art. It is not a government institution, but its main sponsor is the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Painting is both physically demanding and deeply meditative for Mit. He dabs, slaps, and pulls colours across the canvas, combining them spontaneously, with his hands, fingers, and, on sometimes, a palette knife. His paints have a thick viscosity due to a combination of old oil paint, gypsum powder, colour pigments, and acrylic paints that have been loosened with linseed oil. Reflective materials enhance the dazzling effect of their blended colours and give them their “magic” glow.” Melanie Pocock, Ikon Curator

The name “Tate” is used also as the operating name for the corporate body, which was established by the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 as “The Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery”.

TATE is a museum space dedicated to support artist, they have exhibitions, workshops, performances, talks films and much more. with my design i also wanted to give the same fealing, a sapce where the public can go and learn and enjoy new art and new experience and new ideas

There are 3 main areas in the design The two maijor exhibitions are located at the ground floor; in two seperate areas; They are connected by curved walls that disjoint the two spaces, both of this artists are in the same movement expressionism.

On the top floor there is another exhibition this one is an photographer with an open area for the public to be able to circulate in a way that every area is seen.

This sapce is meant to be enjoyed by everyone weather for the public enjoing the exhibit or for the people coming for the workshop. The workshop can be acceced by everyone and is open all day.

PHOTO INSPIRED DESIGN For my first floor i wanted to use the photographer as a way to trasmit my design idea in to a concept, ive used his photos in a way the incorporates the photo into a design.

Curves may be built into the architecture of a building and must be cleverly incorporated into the room scheme in some cases. A curved wall, on the other hand, can often be used as a foil to strong, vertical and horizontal lines, or as a partition or zoning device, softly dividing a space without looking obtrusive. Smooth, curving lines can improve functionality and boost feelings of well-being both inside and out, so take inspiration from these inspiring spaces that have curves in all the right places Separate area Building a curved wall between two rooms is a fun way to divide an open-plan space and add privacy.

The curve bends in towards the living space here, creating a cosy, sociable atmosphere..

For my wooden walls they are gonna be made out of steambending involves heating wood in a steambox until it becomes malleable and then securing it in a mould so that it cools in a curved shape. The most common method for large structural pieces is to use Glued Laminated Wood. The material can be bent by glueing segments of wood together in the shape of a curved mould. Large non-structural parts, on the other hand, are curved with spaced cuts using the Kerfing technique. Furthermore, researchers have developed a new method for bending panels that takes advantage of the natural swelling and contraction of wood.

This material is made out of thin paper, is very good for very diferent uses, it is very durable and can stand heavy weights.

It is very flexable, it can be turn into furniture, a table, coffe table, seating areas, wall deviders, ligt doors, and many others In my case of this design, im gonna use this materisl for the soly porpuse to be a sliding door for my curved patition wall, the material can be stick in into the wall and can be closed by small magnests.

Ive decided to do it this ways, to be a diferent space from the ground floor, something diferent, that people wont be expet- ing coming from the level below.

MATERIAL SELECTION

Unutilized areas

In terms of the size of the plans is very tinny. Becouse im doing a gallery, there is always gonna be space that is never going to used, in this case is used in a from of circulation. As represented above on those boxes the areas where it couses a break in the circulation for people to ease out from the main exhibitions

In terms of materials i wanted to be a warmer fealing, and inviting, where it would have natural light from all windows.

The floring is this continuous flow of concrete, where every reflection would brithen place.

The wall colors wouldn´t be to bright, a smoth white ish color.

The main exhibition curved wall is going to made out of oak, a simpler way where we bend the material in stages, so it would be mounted in just like Legos. Each peace is mounted with a sqaured extrusuion that fits in the other squeare hole. (page3 details) they slide in horizontally with magnetes for support, and it finnally it is secured with the pocked square holes. It is much practical for assemble and disassemble.

Gallery Circulation is a big part of my project.

It all starts at the front door, where we can see the first exhibition with the sculptures. Circulation has a very organic flow i might say, from the first exhibition, to the next there isn´t art in the way where the public cannot walk.

People can walk in the space freally without beeing concernd about the art being in the way, art in this space kinda tells where to go without getting lost, not just the art but the design it self is very self explanatory.

The circulation map from above can tells us that, (red arrows)people that came for the exhibition only have a certain path that they can go, on the other end (green arrows) we can see that there is a different ending where used the can use the normal path or choose to enter into the walls for workshops. The sapce is very versityle becouse it can be used and reused by other future artists.
