GRADUATE EDUCATION AT MICA

Students in the MA in Social Design program believe that design and the design process can, and should, play a role in creating positive change; possess a professional level of design skills and/ or relevant knowledge; are prepared for an immersive, hands-on experience; and are excited about working collaboratively with different disciplines, knowledge bases, and points of view.

Groundbreaking graduate programs at MICA are redefining the role of highly skilled and informed artists and designers in society. MICA offers MFA programs, ranked in the top ten by U.S. News & World Report, as well as MA, MBA, MAT, and MPS programs at the vanguard of contemporary art and design education and application.

Applicants have typically worked or studied in a creative or relevant field including, but not limited to, design, architecture, photography, fine arts, business, anthropology, sociology, public health, engineering, environmental studies, non-profit, and more.

DEMONSTRATING THE VALUE OF DESIGN IN ADDRESSING SOCIAL PROBLEMS MICA’s MA in Social Design (MASD) is an intensive, one-year graduate program grounded in a philosophy of practice-based learning combining theory and praxis—action and reflection. The studio-based curriculum emphasizes learning by doing and working to solve social issues, not just to study them.

ALUMNA PROFILE: BRIONY HYNSON ’12 As both a member of MASD’s inaugural class and Robert W. Deutsch Social Design Fellow, Briony Hynson focused on creating public spaces that promote play within underserved areas. This experience led her to take on the role of Deputy Director of the Neighborhood Design Center, a nonprofit that has provided services through the community design process since 1968.

MASD Alumni have gone on to pursue diverse careers within the business, nonprofit, social enterprise and public sectors in Baltimore, nationally and internationally, at institutions such as Chipotle, eMocha, Evergreen Health, Gensler, Johns Hopkins, Imperative, Reboot, and Teach for America.

The MASD curriculum introduces students to a broad theoretical framework for social design, exposes them to a variety of methods and models for social impact, and prepares them with a core set of skills and the experiences necessary to create and pursue professional opportunities in the field.

Social Design at MICA has been widely recognized in GOOD Magazine and Fast Company, and with numerous awards, including the Ashoka U-Cordes Innovation Award (2014), Core77 Design Awards, Print’s Regional Design Awards and Sappi Ideas that Matter grants, among others. Students in this dynamic program will: • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group of peers, faculty, community leaders, designers, entrepreneurs, public health officials, and visiting scholars.

• Engage with outside partners by using design and design thinking to translate ideas into tangible, positive outcomes. Past partners include: Whole Foods Market, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Maryland Energy Administration, and Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design.

• Identify problems and propose solutions through extensive research and observation, learning subject matter through an immersive process and developing the ability to visualize and confidently defend ideas.

• Develop a diverse set of skills in design research, design thinking, facilitation, visualization, entrepreneurship, etc. that can be applied to multiple career options in the fields of design, social sciences, and social innovation.

• Complement the core social design seminar and studio with an array of elective course options from departments across MICA as well as a course share program with Johns Hopkins University, University of Baltimore, and others.

• Have the opportunity to apply for a second-year, post-graduate fellowship upon graduation, providing financial support and infrastructure for continued research, implementation and evaluation of thesis work.

CENTER FOR SOCIAL DESIGN Social Design at MICA is dedicated to demonstrating and promoting the value of design in creating visionary solutions to complex social problems, and to inspiring and preparing the next generation of creative changemakers.

In fall 2014, MICA launched the Center for Social Design in a new home—a 4,000 square foot collaborative studio, classroom and office space—in Baltimore’s emergent Station North Arts & Entertainment District.

The new center expands upon MICA’s pioneering work in social design since 2007, bringing together all of our current social design initiatives—our graduate program, our award-winning practice-based studio, and our postgraduate fellows program— and will activate various new initiatives, partnerships and events.
