PrEP

What is it?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a way to take control of your sexual health. It's a once-a-day pill that helps people who are HIV-negative to stay HIV-negative. PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV transmission–and a powerful tool in helping to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Is Taking PrEP difficult? Not at all. Taking PrEP can be very easy, but you will have some things to remember while using PrEP, which include: Staying on track with taking PrEP once a day Getting tested regularly or once every 3 months for HIV and STIs (sexually transmitted infections)

Who is PrEP for?

PrEP is recommended for: People who are HIV negative and unsure of the HIV status of their partner(s) People who don’t regularly use condoms when having sex People who have been recently diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) Anyone who has shared equipment when injecting drugs People who have a partner with HIV who is not on treatment, just started treatment, or who forgets to take their medication

How well does PrEP work at preventing HIV? PrEP is 92-99% effective at preventing HIV when taken correctly.

If I'm using PrEP, do I still have to use condoms? Condoms also prevent HIV when used correctly for every sex act. Remember, PrEP does not protect against other STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, or herpes. It also does not prevent pregnancy.

What are the side effects of taking PrEP?

PrEP has only a few mild side effects. During the first 2-3 weeks that PrEP is started, some people have nausea, fatigue and dizziness. Some people report an increase in gas. These side effects typically go away after 2-3 weeks of taking your medication every day.

How can I get PrEP? PrEP is available free or at low cost in Maryland, even if you are uninsured. Most health insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover PrEP. Learn more at prepmaryland.org
