Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Charles Pierce’s classifies signs into icons, indexes and symbols. An icon is a sign which itself expresses the qualities of its dynamic object. An index is a sign which manifests the influence of its dynamic object. A symbol is a sign which refers to its dynamic object through a formal representation. Therefore, signs have material reppresentation of an object, even though it may not be direct. However, diagrams do not have a representational form for their dynamic object. They are used as a tool to portray relationships and define performance in space.

Plan and elevation drawings of the model aided in the creation of the rhino model. I worked on elevations first. Through analysis of the elevation drawing, I broke down the drawing into 3 layers - frame, solid and glazing. I started with the frame linework, which shaped the linework of the solids and glazing. The elevations are completed after extruding the linework. I did the same thing with the top and base with 2 plan drawings. Lastly, I changed the material of the glazing to a glass material to give the see-through effect.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Through the observation of picture references, Toyo Ito’s serpentine gallery pavilion uses furniture to suggest the functionality of the space. The sheltered space has several tables and chairs for small group meet ups. With sufficient amount of sunlight shining into the pavilion, it provides a comfortable space for communal activities. A ‘flexible’ design function of the pavilion can be seen through the use of the space within the openings of the box. Some openings of the pavilion provide a suitable size and height for a human to rest in those spaces. Furthermore, these openings give their users a sense of privacy and personal space.

Toyo Ito Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2002 This isometric shows 3 distinct layers - frame, solid and glass. Different lineweights are used to seperate the interior and exterior. For the interior, I chose to only model those that can be seen through the glazing. Shdowing and lineweights are done with more detail as it is important to show depth. Lines that appear through the glazing are thinner. Lines on the surface are thicker. While constructing the model, it was hard to get the frames of each side and the top to align together. This is important to allow the structure to hold itself together. The threshold is mainly guided by the material. This influences the circulation space of the pavilion. The threshold of the design restricts the entry of the pavilion. Howver, on the inside, the space is rather free flowly, there are tables to suggest spaces to gathering.

Threshold
The path lines represents the movement of humans within the space. The closer the lines are, the higher the congestion of humans around the area. Different shades of grey are used to show density of humans in the circulation space of the pavilion.
Materials guides the threshold of the pavilion.The bottom diagram shows the amount of light in the pavilion. Areas with allow the most amount of light to go through suggest possible entrance of the space.

Process
I researched the dimensions of the model to get a 1:1 scale of the actual model as no dimensions were given on the image on the left. The information above was found on Archdaily.
This is how I set up the plan and elevation drawing to model the pavilion.

Appendix Process
Make2D lines which I had to clean up in Illustrator. I coloured in solid surfaces and the glazing. I also added shadowing to show depth between the surfaces.
