LIVING HOUSE

Main Objective 1. Retain Edwardian character of the street frontage 2. Transform, extent and adapt the original terrace house (4 MacArthur Place North) into a compac, adaptable and environmentally-attuned 3-bedroom and 2-bathroom house, with a small courtyard and additional upper storey. 3. Better utilisation of laneway access to facilitate bicycle parking 4. Generate scenario for future adaptations of the house, to demonstrate how the dwelling accomodates to growing and changing family configurations. Scenarios First 10 years: multi-generational house (extended family consists of the core family and live-in grandparents) Second 10 years: Live-work combination (one of the parents will work from home) with 2 children (teen-aged) Third 10 years: Live-work combination, transitioning into retirement, with a live-in adult child or tenant W]

Main Concept - Light D

[N EL

As the current site was narrow with surrounding buildings that are of 2-3 levels, it was important to provide lightcourts into the house.

With that in mind, the main programs I wanted this house to have was a double height living and dining space. Futhermore, designing a stairwell with a full glass window facade would provide sufficient daylight into the middle of the house.

In the planning phase, I had already accomdated spaces for 3 generations. That would mean that I designed 4 bedroom + 2 study and bathroooms in each level Ground Floor: Grandparents’ Bedroom, Living + Kitchen, 1 Ambulant Bathroom, 1 Laundy Room, Bike Storage 1st level: Child’s Bedroom, 1 Study Room & 1 Bathroom

GROUND LEVEL FLOOR PLAN

2nd level: Parents’ Bedroom with walk-in-wardrobe, 1 Bathroom with bathtub Melbourne has northerly suns all year rond, which suggest that the north area of the house will get more light while the south side will be relaatively shaded. Therefore, bedrooms are mainly located in the south side of the house while the living and courtyard is located on the north side of the house. Bike storage is located at the north end of the house. The main feature of the house is the double height living space and stairwell with glass facade. It is produced with an open corridor pathway on the first level. This allows for cross ventilation through the building. Sufficient daylight fills in the interiors as well.

FIRST LEVEL FLOOR PLAN

The front facade of the original house has been retained. By having a veranda the front of the house, it provides a sense of separation between the old and new construction. Vegetation are located around the house, with the aim of shading the living spaces and also be used a privacy screening from neighbours.

SECOND YEAR First Level Floor Plan (Transformed)

With the addition of another child, the original study room space has sufficient space to transform into a bedroom + study. The original bedroom of the first child can also accomodate a study space with a view of the stairs and the double height living room.

THIRD YEAR Ground Level Floor Plan (Transformed)

As the grandparents no longer in the house, their bedroom space can become an open reading space or a more private space if the occupant want to have small meetings in the hosue.

LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD CIVIC + MATERALITY Done together with: Olivia Wan Will Rudd Devina Citraramyaguna Shiyi Wang Our concept derived from having to deal with the curved boundary of the existing site. From that, it formed our central pathway into the side, activiting all 3 streets and using them as entrances into the site. The Heritage facade on 4 Macarthur Place North is remained and used as one of the entrance point into the site. We wanted to provide shared facilities o encourage a community-living space: 1. Shared Laundry 2. Shared Bin Room 3. Shared Bike Storage 4. Shared Function Room/Private Meeting Space 5. Shared Garden Space 6. Shared Elevator lobby 7. Shared Corridor Other critierias we had was to provide sufficient sunlight to every residential unit and a variety of unit sizes to accomodate to different family sizes. 8 Single Bedroom Apartments 2 Three Bedroom Apartments 2 Two Bedroom Apartments We also took into consideration for disabled occupants, therefore we allocated a lift lobby for vertical transportation and ambulant toilet available at the roof terrace. Ground floor units and shared corridors are also suitable for wheelchair access. Street Activation: Ground Floor Residential Units have front and back gardens to as a way for separation between public and private space. Objective of the gardens is to provide a semi-public/private space to occupants and pesdestrain to interact with the space. Seatings around the garden have been designed in place to allow neighbours to connect with each other. Laneway Activiation: Remained as a rubbish collection area as we thought that it was appropriate to follow how the neighbours used the same laneway.

ROOF PLAN

Landscaping has been redesigned as I wanted the pathway to have a nice flow through the gardens, following the concept of ‘Loopy’. Seatings have been placed at areas that I think would encourage neighbours to interact as well as not be an obstruction to pesdestrains.

We originally identical apartments on ground floor and first floor. However, I decide to change the first floor apartments to a loft apartment to get a different option to ocupants who would like the ‘NYC’ loft-style of living.

The second level consist of a roof terrace and clothes line area. The Roof Terrace provides a larger space for resisdent and their guest to interact. With the illuminating polycarbon roof, it adds on to the atmosphere if privates events were to be held in Roof Terrace. The shared clothes line is situation on the north side of the site get sufficient sunlight for residence to dry their laundry.

This detail shows floor to floor slab connection with glazing and external shading device. The roof terrace also has a roof garden to give its residents a green view when using the space. It also provides shading and cooling of the roof to reduce the need for heating energy.
