Field trips to Miami Marlins free Thursday home games are popular with Miami Lakes seniors

MIAMI MARLINS Thursday home games are free for seniors 55 years and older. The group is decked out with their red 2016 Miami Lakes Seniors Sluggers shirts. During the game, the Miami Lakes group was shown three times on the stadium’s Jumbo Tron screen. the Twin Towers? And then a second plane crashed and it was obvious and we knew it was intentional.”

Rodriguez also saw that the attacks caused thousands of deaths and other people to scurry in fear as terrorists seared the soul of the nation.

“Over 300 firefighters died and over 73 police officers died on that day,” he said. “They had the courage and commitment to their profession rescuing people knowing they wouldn’t survive.”

Rodriguez will share those somber memories during the New Testament Baptist Church’s 15th anniversary of September 11, which pays tribute to the military, firefighters and police officers who put their lives on the lines to protect their country, as well as the people who perished in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on that faithful day.

The event, in collaboration with the Town of Miami Lakes, kicks off at noon at 6601 N.W. 167 Street.

Rodriguez, a retired Navy veteran and police lieutenant with the Miami Springs Police Department, said the event will feature a rendition of God Bless America and Healing Rain, a song former President George Bush commissioned Michael W. Smith, a contemporary gospel recording artist, to write to help heal America in the wake of the terror attacks.

The event also features speakers who witnessed the attacks first hand, police K-9 units and firefighters’ demonstrations, a helicopter, giveaways, food trucks and

an obstacle course for kids.

But perhaps the most touching moment of the event are coins with the image of the military on one side and the images of police officers and firefighters on the other to honor the brave men and women in uniforms.

In addition, Pastor Rey Cruz will deliver his sermon called the “Ultimate Sacrifice” taken from scriptures in the Holy Bible, and Tshirts emblazoned with the event’s logo will be given out in advance for people attending the event.

All current and retired law enforcement, fire fighters, military, and public safety personnel

are invited to attend the memorial service as special guests of the Town of Miami Lakes.

Rodriguez said the cost is an estimated $15,000 to organize the event annually and he’s seeking donations for this year’s tribute as well.

He said the event started in 2002 between the church’s congregation and Dade Christian School, and from 2005 to 2010, they expanded it to the community.

“Since 9/11, I was moved and in all my years I will never forgot it,” Rodriguez said.

Main Street Players present Clybourne Park starting on September 30 at Playhouse Main Street Players, located at 6766 Main Street, is currently in rehearsal for the final show of the 2016 season, Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris. The 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the sequel to A Raisin in the Sun, tackles the issues of race and housing.

In 1959, a middle-aged white couple is selling their home to escape the place where their Korean War veteran son killed himself. When they agree to sell the home to a black couple, it creates tension with their white neighbors.

Fast forward to 2009 and now the same neighborhood has undergone many changes including increased property values and

gentrification. A white couple wants to buy the home from a black family that has owned it for the past 50 years.

The play will be directed by Tatyana-Marie Carlo, with assistant director Gloria Cardona, and managed by stage manager Cindy Castillo.

Show dates are Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 23, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Three candidates vie for Seat 1 on Town Council

By The Miami Laker staff Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, has drawn two challengers for his Seat One on the Miami Lakes Town Council.

On November 8, Rodriguez is seeking another four-term in political office but his opponents, Xiomara Pazos and neophyte Alex Dehghani, are Town Council hopefuls vying to unseat the incumbent in the general election.

If neither candidate musters 51 percent of the votes, the two top vote-getters will face off in a runoff election two weeks later.

Rodriguez, Pazos and Dehghani responded to a candidate questionnaire for the town’s general election, outlining their experience and discussing the issues residents want them to resolve if elected.

Rodriguez was first elected to the Town Council in 2012, when he defeated Dr. David Bennett for the seat then-Council member Nick Perdomo gave up to pursue his business endeavors.

Rodriguez, 47, is married to Lisa Rodriguez, and they have three children, Brian, Marc and Megan.

Rodriguez has been a resident for 24 years, and has been part of numerous community and civic groups, including past president for Miami Lakes K-8 Center PTSA, former president of the Windmill Gate Homeowners Association, Boy Scout’s of America’s Explorer Post advisor, Miami-Dade Schools Community and Family Involvement Committee, and Miami-Dade County Council of PTA/PTSA executive committee.

He currently serves as a town representative for the Miami-Dade League of Cities, a member of the Miami-Dade League of Cities Traffic and Transportation Committee, and a member of the Board of Directors for the South Florida Firefighters Calendar.

Rodriguez, who has raised

$5,625, said he moved to Miami Lakes in 1992 because the community is a wonderful area to raise a family.

“An area where people care about the beautiful tree-lined streets, having cows on Main Street and a family friendly quality of life,” he said.

“A small town feel with all the amenities of a big city,” he said.

“We have top rated schools, large parks, tree-lined streets and wonderful neighborhoods where one can raise a family.”

Rodriguez said he decided to run for office again because he wants to continue working on the initiatives “I have started, such as improving traffic flow throughout the town, keeping our taxes low and protecting property values as well as our quality of life. I am committed to public service and have been a firefighter paramedic for 28 years,” he said.

Rodriguez said some of the issues he wants to address if reelected, are traffic, getting an additional emergency rescue unit at the new Miami Lakes fire station, supporting the town’s efforts in landing its own independent zip code, public safety, maintaining

fiscal responsibility and keeping the tax rate low.

“I believe that as a Town Council, we have to work cohesively, respectfully, and productively with each other to reach our common goals for the residents of Miami Lakes,” Rodriguez said.

On the campaign trial, Rodriguez has been knocking on doors meeting residents and using social media to present his political platform.

He said residents are happy with the town keeping the tax rate low; addressing traffic problems and public safety are their top concerns.

“Followed by continued improvement of our town’s parks, maintaining our beautification and tree canopy, as well as continued support for our town events, such as Movies in the Park, Easter Egg hung and the Halloween Trick or treating in the park,” he said.

Rodriguez said he plans to keep his open door policy, which includes meeting with residents face-to-face and attending many homeowners association meetings and town events to address residents’ needs.

“I have made it my policy to go to the homes of the residents rather then the residents coming to Town Hall,” he said. “I’m a former HOA president, town committee chair, PTA president and I have had an open door policy for years.

Residents vote you into office and they deserve a quick and proper response when they contact their elected officials.”

Rodriguez said residents should vote for him because he will con-

tinue to watch over the town’s budget, services, public safety and protect “our property values.”

“I am an independent voice on the Town Council and have supported all issues that are good for our residents,” he said. “I have a proven track record of leadership and accomplishing goals. I love this town, I am raising my children here and the residents can be assured I will protect our town and its values for their families and mine.”

Pazos unsuccessfully ran against Councilmember Ceasar Mestre in 2014, and she’s seeking to bounce back this year with hopes of winning a seat on the Town Council.

She initially filed papers to run for Seat 3 but changed her mind and is seeking Rodriguez’s chair in Seat 1.

The 59-year-old resident is CEO and president of a non-emergency medical transportation company.

She has a 34 year-old namesake daughter, and she has been living in Miami Lakes for nearly a decade.

Pazos said she is vice president of the Serenity Point Homeowners Association and a longtime community activist.

She also volunteers for senior citizens in the town.

Pazos said she moved to Miami Lakes because it seems like an utopia.

“I moved here because I want to live in a small community that also has the best of everything,” she said. “I moved here because I love the schools and churches and a

family friendly community.”

Pazos said Miami Lakes means kids, seniors, family, respect love, comfort and security.

“Miami Lakes is about the world’s best schools, houses of worship, churches and wonderful street neighborhoods where you can raise a family,” she said.

XIOMARA PAZOS Pazos, who has raised $5,100 for her campaign, said she decided to run for political office a second time because members of the Town Council seemed to be at odds most of the time.

She also said the Town Council is dominated by men.

“Our current Town Council has no diversity of thought or of any diversity of any kind,” she said. “It has no females and is an all male club. They all vote the same way and are not objective and do not keep an open mind. We need public officials who have an open

Pazos said she’s informing voters about her political platform by knocking on doors and listening to their concerns.

She said residents told her they do not know the council members.

“They believe the current council is too influenced by special interests and big developers and the current council votes with big money interests and not the people,” she said.

If elected, Pazos said she will always keep an open door policy.

“My door will always be open,” she said.

Pazos said residents should vote for her because her experience outside the political arena gives her the best chance to resolve issues for residents.

“The council needs a female voice, diversity of thought and someone with business experience,” she said. “I am that person.”

Dehghani, 36, is an attorney who has lived in Miami Lakes for 30 years.

He is married to Ingrid Dehghani, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child. They have a son named Sean.

Dehghani served as Guardian ad Litem to the Circuit Courts of Miami-Dade County, and has assisted hundreds of undocumented immigrants attain asylum and legal status in the Federal Immigration Court. He also assisted hundreds of children with pro bono legal services.

He said Miami Lakes is special and has always been home.

chosen to raise our own children – where we were raised,” he said.

“Miami Lakes is part of who we are, and its community means a lot to me and my family.”

Dehghani said he decided to run for political office because he has a vested interest in the town’s future, including raising his children here.

“The Town Council needs an independent voice who will represent the view of the often silent majority who simply want low taxes, quality of services and an end to wasteful spending,” he said.

“I want to put an end to overdevelopment, and to actually do something about traffic gridlock and neighborhood crime.

“Given that I was raised here, I’ve seen the changes in Miami Lakes over the years. I believe things can be better and should be.

I know I can be an asset toward that future and I’m excited to prove it.”

If elected, Dehghani said he would like to address various issues.

“Unreasonable expenditures, the growing traffic at previously unheard of times, taking affirmative steps to address the Zika epidemic, and work with the police and the Town Council to propose legislation to ensure the installation of security cameras in homes to address the spike in home robberies in recent years,” he said.

ALEX DEHGHANI On the campaign trail, Dehghani said voters are informing him about their views.

“I value them greatly,” he said.

“Their views make up my platform and I’m excited for the opportunity to take on those issues on their behalf,” he said.

Dehghani said residents are tired of the mind numbing traffic jams at unheard of hours of the day.

He said residents are also frustrated with the amount of money that has been spent on the mayor’s lawsuits regarding his legal bills from his reinstatement and criminal cases.

But the Zika virus is their biggest concern.

“There are pregnant women and families who live near our lakes and canals that are genuinely frightened of being bitten by a mosquito carrying the Zika virus.

Our residents are speaking loud and clear – and we have to listen to

them.”

If elected, Dehghani said he plans to have an open door policy.

“If a resident bothered to take the time out of their day to come see me about an issue, the least I could do is hear them out,” he said.

Dehghani said residents should vote for him because he’s the best candidate to be their voice on the dais.

“As a lawyer licensed to practice law in three states, not only can I comprehend laws and legal jargon, I also know when another lawyer is overcharging,” he said.

“I’m also painfully aware that multimillion dollar developers in the area can do much more to free up the paralyzing traffic which they have every intention of leaving us to solve.

“My intentions are sincere and grounded in the good of my community, not by the whims of special interests who are raising their children elsewhere. If elected, I intend on introducing my unborn son to an ever-improving Miami Lakes that he can clearly distinguish from the more congested parts of Miami-Dade County.

“In sum, I will vote for smart growth, low taxes and an efficient government that listens and works for the people and not special interests. I will be an independent voice for the people.”

Federal Student Aid workshop scheduled for September 17 at Miami Lakes Youth Center Do you have a child, or children, who want to go to college, but don’t think you can afford it?

F.A.F.S.A., a part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation, helping make college education possible for everyone.

Town hosts C.E.R.T. refresher course on September 17 for those who previously trained Miami Lakes will host a refresher course for CERT Certified volunteers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, at Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue.

CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. The CERT program educates community members about disaster preparedness and trains them for basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations.

The refresher course is only available to those who have previously taken the CERT training, seating is limited and registration is required.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Community may nominate a Grand Marshal candidate for Town’s Veteran’s Day Parade Miami Lakes is offering an opportunity to the community to nominate a deserving individual to be the Grand Marshal of the 37th annual Veteran’s Day Parade to be held on Sunday, November 6.

Nominations are due by Monday, October 17.

The Grand Marshal criteria includes: • Be in good standing in the community.

• Be a person who have displayed outstanding service, pride and commitment to the community, county, state and/or country.

• Be able and willing to carry out the function of Grand Marshal for the parade.

• Proof of Honorable Service in the Armed Forces is required.

Selection of the Grand Marshal will be determined by the Veterans Committee at its October meeting.

Town seeks local businesses to participate in Student Job Fair scheduled for October 15 For the second time this year, Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force and Economic Development Committee will host a Student Job Fair for high school and college students from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 15, at Roberto Alonso Community Center, 16500 N.W. 87 Avenue, in Miami Lakes.

Over 30 local businesses participated in the first event with more than 100 students attending, many of which were hired.

The Town of Miami Lakes encourages the local business community to participate in this

free opportunity to meet potential interns and/or future employees.

Space is limited and registration is required. Employers who are interested in participating are asked to submit the registration form by Friday, September 20.

Mosquito site inspections and Zika information is available Town of Miami Lakes is urging residents to contact Miami-Dade County via the 311 system to request a site inspection should they experience a mosquito nuisance. Site inspections on residential properties are often made to find the source of the mosquito annoyance.

The Miami-Dade County Office of Emergency Management is also requesting that all businesses that have been impacted by the Zika Virus (i.e. lost revenue, business interruption) fill out an online survey at http://owl.li/tPc4303i3jR.

The survey will allow the county to determine the economic impact and seek available assistance from the State and Federal governments.

Parks online portal now available Miami Lakes has launched a new online facility rental reservation and program registration portal as one of the first communities to showcase this online program with a new look and feel from the previous Parks Registration system.

Two M-Dade Police Officers cited for lifesaving Miami-Dade County police officers Joseph Cruz and Andres Galvez were awarded the departmental Bronze Medal of Valor and Lifesaving Award and selected to share Distinguished Officer of the Month honors for the month of August.

On April 15, Cruz and Galvez

were dispatched to a dispute where the subject was threatening to assault the victim. Upon arriving, Cruz and Galvez made contact with a female who advised her exboyfriend was inside the backseat of her vehicle with their five-yearold child and was refusing to exit the vehicle.

Cruz and Galvez approached the left rear passenger door and opened it to make contact with the subject, who was sitting in the right rear passenger position within the vehicle, holding his son.

Cruz proceeded to give him verbal commands to exit the vehicle. At that time, the subject became irate and began yelling to Cruz, “I’m not getting out!” Cruz proceeded to go around the vehicle and opened the door closest to the subject. Cruz again asked him to exit the vehicle, to no avail.

The subject then reached toward his front pocket and withdrew a firearm, at which time Cruz immediately drew his firearm from his holster and yelled out the word “gun” in order to inform Galvez the subject was armed. Galvez also drew his firearm and joined Cruz at the right rear passenger door.

Cruz gave the subject loud verbal commands to move his hand away from the gun.

Refusing, the subject proceeded to use his son as a human shield, positioning the child between himself and the officers. He then began yelling, “Don’t kill me.”

Hearing the commotion, the female rushed in and positioned herself between the officers and the subject and began yelling, “Don’t kill them.”

At this time, Cruz reholstered his firearm and ran to the left side

of the vehicle, while Galvez stayed holding point on the subject with his firearm. Cruz activated his Electronic Control Device (ECD) and deployed it at the subject’s back. This afforded Galvez the opportunity to disarm the subject and retrieve the child, handing him over to his mother. The subject was later charged with Child

Abuse/Endangerment, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Resisting Arrest Without Violence.

Using communication, teamwork, and sound tactics, Cruz and Galvez were able to defuse and deescalate a situation that could have potentially ended with tragic results.

Daniel Borges operates his independent CPA/accounting practice in Miami Lakes

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Longtime resident Daniel Borges owns and operates his business as an independent Certified Public Accountant (CPA) within Miami Lakes. The decision to open a corporate office in the Lakes area came easily, as Borges has lived in the area since he was 13. It was that same year when he met his now-wife, Miami Lakes Educational Center teacher Neyda Borges, at a bus stop in the 8th grade.

He attended Barbara Goleman Senior High School while she attended Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, but they were inseparable through life’s many changes. Together since 1997, the two wed in 2004 around the time Daniel earned his bachelor’s in Business Administration from Florida International University.

He began working at a construction company and knew he wanted to continue climbing the ladder there, but saw a ceiling if he didn’t pursue a graduate degree so he earned his master’s in Accounting from St. Thomas University and a CPA license.

Dade County Bar Association honors M-Dade College’s Eduardo J. Padron The Dade County Bar Association recently honored MiamiDade College President Dr. Eduardo J. Padron at its 100-year celebration gala for his contributions to enriching the Miami community and the catalyst for shaping the institution among the best in the United States.

The event was held on Saturday, June 4, at the JW Marriott in Brickell, where other dignitaries were recognized on the same night.

The Association also honored Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises; NBA Hall of Famer and former Miami Heat star Alonso Mourning; Grammy award-winning recording artist Jon Secada; U.S. Congresswoman and MDC Alumna Illeana Ros-Lehtinen; and historian and author Arva Moore Parks McCabe.

Padron became MDC president in 1995 and is credited with elevating the college into a position of national prominence among the best and most recognized U.S. colleges and universities.

“I am honored to be recognized by the prestigious Dade County Bar Association and proud to say MDC is committed to prepare future leaders who will make a difference in our world,” said Padron.

By Ashley Rey Special to The Miami Laker The Pace High School Spartans started off their football season on a high note as they defeated the Doral Academy Firebirds in a pre-season KickOff Classic 27-7.

Pace running back Stefon Francis quickly started it off with a touchdown in the first quarter.

Doral responded with a touchdown to tie the game at halftime.

The Spartans kept on fighting by scoring 3 more touchdowns, two of them by Francis and one by Tyrone Douglas.

“We finally came together as a team. We never quit, we kept going,” said Francis. “We have all improved as a team, the coaches believed in us, and we were able to perform as we wanted to.”

Coach Joe Zaccheo said, “It was good to see them staying focused and positive.”

In the first game of the regular season, the Spartans defeated the Hialeah Miami Lakes High Trojans 34-0 last week.

The Spartans are looking forward to their new season and will be traveling to Curtis Park to face the Booker T Washington Tornadoes, on Friday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m.

‘b fore pink’ golf tournament scheduled at Shula’s on Oct. 7 The 5th annual Breast Cancer Golf Tournament, “b fore pink” sponsored by Vera Cadillac/ Buick/GMC has been scheduled for Friday, October 7, at Shula’s Golf Club, 7601 Miami Lakes Drive in Miami Lakes.

Pink is the color for breast cancer and all women are at risk with one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime. However, early detection and a healthy lifestyle saves lives.

Proceeds from the 2016 “b fore pink” tournament will help fund the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative’s (WBHI) efforts to reduce the incidence of undetected and untreated breast cancer.

WBHI, headquartered in Miami Lakes, provides breast health awareness, education,

screening and referrals for underserved women through a targeted neighborhood door-to-door outreach intervention.

WBHI’s program has identified breast cancer higher than the national average, which not only saves women’s lives, but also taxpayer dollars.

The event gets underway with registration at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m. and the scramble tournament at noon, followed by an awards ceremony, entertainment, auction, dinner and cocktails.

Pace High is only winner among local schools in first regular season games Pace High’s football team routed Hialeah-Miami Lakes, 34-0, while American, Barbara Goleman and Mater Academy lost their opening games of the regular season.

The Spartans dominated the Trojans on both sides of the ball, including forcing several turnovers and sacking the quarterback three times.

American fell to Northwestern, 47-0, as the Bulls forced two fumbles and a blocked punt all in the first quarter, a sign of things to come for the rest of the game.

The Patriots gave up 116 rushing yards and 99 passing yards, as they couldn’t overcome a penurious defense led by senior linebacker Demetrius Taylor.

Western High routed Goleman, 45-7, in a game that saw quarter-

back Harrison Story, making his first varsity start, throw for 21 for 25 passes with 327 yards and six touchdowns.

The Gators’ only score came in the first quarter when John Correa scored on a 65-yard run.

Miramar defeated Mater Academy, 28-7, as the Patriots’ defense blocked back-to-back punts, giving the offense an easy opportunity to score.

Miramar’s special teams returned a 40 yard punt return to set up the Patriots’ third score of the game.

Mater Academy’s defense gave up 210 rushing yards and 235 passing yards.

The Lions’ offense only mustered 29 passing yards, 29 rushing yards and lost three fumbles.

Pace baseball team attends groundbreaking ceremony for Miracle League Field

By Ashley Rey Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School’s baseball players took some time off during their summer break to be a part of the Miracle League of MiamiDade’s groundbreaking ceremonies for their new field in Tamiami Park.

The organization, founded in 2010 and co-chaired by Pace Class of 1977 alumnus Raimundo Rocha, provides an opportunity for children with mental and/or physical challenges to play baseball.

Pace Baseball and the Miami Marlins were part of hundreds of

supporters that came out to celebrate the groundbreaking on August 13. “I’m excited to see this come to life in our community of Miami,� said Pace catcher Jose Torres. “To see young boys and girls have the opportunity to participate in baseball/softball and for me to be a part of it is such a blessing. I’m happy that our school can help these kids.�

The Miracle League plans on opening the Tamiami Park field in Spring 2017 with hopes of hosting thousands of disabled kids from Homestead to North Miami.

St. Thomas hosts first ever Captain’s Summit for high school athletes St. Thomas University will host the Student ACES Captain's Summit, a leadership event designed specifically for high school athletic captains, on Tuesday, September 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fernandez

ML United Soccer Club registers for upcoming season The Miami Lakes United Soccer Club is holding registration for its boys and girls recreational programs for the fall season.

The sign-up event is scheduled for Monday, September 12 and Tuesday, September 13 for boys and girls from ages 4 to 11 years old at Royal Oaks Park, 16500 N.W. 87 Avenue.

Participants must bring a copy of their birth certificates, a soccer ball, shin guards and soccer cleats.

The event is the brainchild of Student ACES president and founder Buck Martinez, and his daughter and co-founder Krissy Webb, who debuted the Captain's Summit in Palm Beach County. “We are honored to have the opportunity to bring the Student ACES Captain's Summit to Miami-Dade County,� said Martinez, a St. Thomas University graduate and member of the St. Thomas University Bobcat Sports Hall of Fame. “Being a captain is a tremendous honor and brings with it large

responsibilities. The Captain's Summit will arm the student-athletes with the necessary skills to be effective leaders not only in their current roles as team captains but as they move forward in life.�

The team of experts will work with the student-athletes to develop life skills in challenging topics including Individual and Team Safety, Optimizing Performance, Team Dynamics, Developing/ Applying the Image of a Captain, and Money Management.

The student-athletes will engage in interactive drills designed to strengthen communication, respect, trust and sacrifice.

MDC coach Cesar Odio Cesar Odio, Miami Dade College’s winningest men’s basketball head coach, died following a nine-year battle with Leukemia.

He was 58.

Odio died last month surrounded by his family members.

Odio spent seven years as the head coach for MDC, compiling a 128-85 school record.

Odio then became the head coach for Barry University, where he spent the next 17 years, and became the most winningest men’s basketball head coach in school history as well, with a 266218 record.

In 2013, Odio became the assistant director of athletics for Barry University.

Odio is survived by his wife, Mary Kay, and their children, Emily and Eddie Odio.

Hurricane prep and planning is still recommended

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The year 2016 is more than a decade following the infamous Hurricane Katrina, the storm that is remembered as one of the most catastrophic in recent memory and U.S. history.

Despite the relative calm in recent years, with exception of the heavy rainstorms last week from

the low pressure system that passed south of Florida, and the deadly flooding in Louisiana, proper precautions should be routine. The hurricane season runs until November 30.

The National Hurricane Center, as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, highlights the main four ways to prepare for a hurricane: Gather information, Plan and Take action, Recover, and Resources.

Gathering information entails knowing whether one lives in an evacuation area, assessing risks, and understanding a home’s vulnerabilities to storm surge, flooding and wind. Keeping an emergency contact list is suggested.Planning and taking action include preparing a basic disaster supplies kit, devising emergency plans and making sure everyone in the home is aware of those plans, pet owners finding options for their pet care, and find-

ing shelter away from home. It is encouraged that families review FEMA’s evacuation guidelines and reviewing the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) health considerations before, during and after a storm. Also, remember to follow the U.S. Food and Drug Admin-

istration’s (FDA) food and water safety guidelines.

Recover refers to recovering from a disaster situation which includes seeking disaster assistance, helping others, health and safety guidelines, and returning home.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Alina Rodriguez, a French teacher at Pace High School, received some education of her own as she studied abroad in Paris over the summer.

Rodriguez was one of only two people nationwide who received a $3,000 Professional Development Scholarship by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). The AATF awarded her with the scholarship after she presented an iTunesU project she created to teach her French students.

For her stay in Paris, Rodriguez was enrolled in an intensive summer course for professors who teach French to foreign students from July 1 through 17. She studied at the prestigious Paris French Alliance school alongside professors from all over the world including Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Greece, and Argentina.

In addition to taking courses in grammar, writing, oral communications, and phonics, Rodriguez was also able to enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of Paris. Hialeah Miami Lakes High reinvents itself; welcomes new principal Lisa Garcia Over the last several years, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High has reinvented itself and reclaimed much of the glory of its history. The Advanced Placement Exam passing rate has increased by over seven percent since 2014 and the graduation rate has soared to almost 90 percent.

The seal is presented by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), in association with the School Superintendents Asso-

Miami Lakes public schools seek volunteer parents for PTSA groups Public schools in the Miami Lakes area are looking for volunteers to join their PTSA organizations for the new school year, becoming one of the strongest voices in the educational process that directly supports students and their schools.

The PTSA works with teachers, parents and administrators to cultivate excellence in academics, sports and leadership opportunities for students, as well as advocacy, fundraising and community action.

The PTSA also works closely with the Miami Lakes Education

Advisory Board (EAB), which represents the town in ensuring kids get the best quality of education at Miami-Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Barbara Goleman and Hialeah Miami Lakes High schools, and Miami Lakes Educational Center.

The town’s EAB was granted its wish list for $58,300 in the Miami Lakes budget for 20162017 to provide, among other initiatives, Advanced Placement Language Arts Program ($26,000) and STEM Elective Course offered at Bob Graham Education

Center and Miami Lakes K-8 Center ($17,000).

The EAB also assists students with tutoring, SAT Prep Class and standardized testing support.

For the PTSA, the groups’ executive committees have been busy developing the details for a very productive and exciting year for all of the students.

St. Thomas University launches new bioethics master’s degree program St. Thomas University (STU) is launching its new master’s degree program in bioethics, an innovative, interdisciplinary program combining science, ethics and human behavior.

The program commenced for the fall semester.

Today’s advances in technology has helped make substantial, beneficial gains in the areas of healthcare and research.

But these advancements in science and technology often outpace the school’s ability to understand, and come with critical ethical questions and challenges.

“Bioethics can be described as what may be done versus what can be done with regards to science and technology today,” said Father Alfred Cioffi, the Florida Blue endowed chair in bioethics and director of STU’s Institute for Bioethics.

“The distinction between can and may is not just a grammatical distinction but an ethical distinction because we can do many things technologically, but should we do them – that’s when our master’s program kicks in and helps individuals evaluate critical situations.”

The program is a fully accredit-

ed Master’s of Science consisting of eight courses totaling 30 graduate credits.

Graduates will not only be improving the progress of healthcare, but will be equipped to engage in deep analysis of the bioethical issues of contemporary society.

Having as advanced degree in the field of bioethics opens various professional opportunities, especially the clinical setting, government regulatory agencies and institutional review boards.

Mater Lakes’ Jose Espejo joins Jazz Ensemble during Aspen Music Festival Mater Lakes Academy senior Jose Espejo, a member of the school’s Jazz Ensemble, was chosen to play in the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado this past June.

Espejo, also a member of the Miami Music Project, was among six students who were picked to participate in the national youth orchestra by the National Take a Stand Festival.

“Jose is a pleasure to have in class,” said Sterling Jones, Mater Lakes Academy band director.

“He’s a hard-working, self-motivated, student musician. He has adjusted quite well into a course that his instrument isn’t known for, which is Jazz. The violin is typically known as a classical music instrument, so his challenge was to study some jazz violinist musicians and enjoy learning a new genre which is jazz.”

JOSE ESPEJO Espejo has been a student at Mater Lakes Academy since he arrived from Venezuela during the 2014-2015 school year school year as a sophomore.

“He is an outstanding violinist,” Jones said.

M-Dade Fire Rescue Junior Cadets win third place overall Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Junior Cadets won third place overall in the Running Hose event and won the Sportsmanship Award during the annual Florida State Firefighters Association State Firematics competition recently in Plantation, Florida.

The event tested the skills of cadets and firefighters from Florida in a series of drills against other fire departments, including

climbing ladders, running hoses, and screwing the hose onto a fire rig in record time.

The firefighters described the event as a fine line between speed and control.

Miami Dade Fire Rescue Captain Abe Iglesias, a Miami Lakes resident, is the program’s Junior Cadet advisor and his two kids are in the program as well, according to the fire department.

MIAMI-DADE FIRE RESCUE CADETS participated in the recent Firematics competition, placed third in the Running Hose event, and won the Sportsmanship Award.

The bride, daughter of Tom and Angie Easley of Mims, Florida, graduated from Astronaut High School in Titusville and Nova Southeastern University. She is a teacher at Hawks Bluff Elementary School.

The groom, son of Andy and Patti Plana, was born and raised in Miami Lakes.

He graduated from Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Santa Fe College and Florida State Fire College. He is a lieutenant with the Town of Davie Fire Rescue. After a honeymoon at Sandals LaSource in Grenada, the newlyweds now reside in Davie.
