Town receives $900,000 grant from Florida Dept. of Transportation for needed Fairway Drive improvements Fairway Drive in Miami Lakes lacks proper crossing locations, bicycle facilities and speed deterrent infrastructure along the corridor according to the Town which installed several low-cost solutions for pedestrian safety. However grant funding was critically needed to enhance safety and infrastructure and the Town Council adopted a Resolution in February to apply for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) Grant. In June, the Town received a FDOT award of $900,000 to complete the Fairway Drive project. The project will cover 0.5 miles of Fairway Drive from Miami Lakes Drive to Miami Lakeway North. The work includes design

and construction of bike lanes and crosswalk improvements for enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety-related infrastructure in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The roadway would be extended to accommodate bike lanes, updated signage and pavement markings, adding speed tables and new drainage infrastructure. The project would provide much needed improvements to safely link bicyclists, pedestrians and disabled persons with limited transportation options to access housing, jobs, commerce, retail and medical facilities. Eagle Scout project leads to new garden and sign at Goleman High On June 15, Boy Scout and Barbara Goleman Senior High (BGSH) student Brandon Chicardini from Troop 565 completed his Eagle Scout project at BGHS. The service project consisted of beautifying an area of the school in front of the Capstone building. Chicardini collected

funds, designed and planned the project which he called “Capstone Gardens", bought all the needed materials and gathered a group of volunteers to help get this project done. To build the garden, the land was cleared and prepared, plants were bought and planted and the terrain was covered with

mulch. The final touch was a seven foot wide sign with the word "Gators" to show pride for the school. The Eagle Project is the final requirement in the Boy Scout journey to acquiring the Eagle Scout rank. Chicardini will be a senior at BGSH this fall.

MLEC says goodbye to favorite Joseph Walpole PAGE 2

JULY 5, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) is saying goodbye to long-time teacher Joseph Walpole. He spent the last 16 years of his teaching career at MLEC, the longest he’d stayed at any one school.

Anyone privileged enough to learn from Walpole could never forget him. Walking into his classroom was always special and whether he was discussing rhythm and meter, or the “art of styling sentences,” or

love, loss and conflict in literature, the lessons came alive, the students sat engaged and enthralled. “Like good writing, teaching is an art and Walpole is the best I’ve ever known,” said Helena Castro, activities director at MLEC. “He taught more than grammar and mechanics, he taught his students about life. His lessons came not only from books, but from his own hardships and triumphs, his time in the U.S. Navy and teaching abroad,” Castro said. Walpole has taught everywhere, from private schools to penitentiaries, around the world. And everywhere, his students remember him, send him holiday cards and emails, dropping by to visit. “I am literally here because of Walpole,” said Dr. Steve Gallon, who was once a student in Walpole’s ninth grade English class at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. “When he met me, I could have gone left, I could have gone right, Walpole helped guide me forward,” said Gallon, now Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) District I school board representative at Walpole’s retirement party. “Walpole believed in us, so much and was so proud of us when we accomplished our

LONGTIME MLEC TEACHER JOSEPH WALPOLE

goals, he was so excited to hear where and when we were accepted to college,” said Jason Ledon, a recent graduate of MLEC heading to Carnegie Mellon in the fall. “When Walpole is proud of you, you become proud of yourself.” It’s not just the students that will miss him. “Joe makes us better teachers and better people,” said Erica EvansDeSimmone, the Cambridge Academy leader at MLEC. “He has been the heart of this academy, and we are going to miss

him.” Walpole has said that, throughout his career, he has sought “to do good in this life.” To help “ingrain values, the old verities that will anchor students through life, truth-seeking, responsibility, courage, compassion and respect for oneself and for others.” If the outpouring of support, love and appreciation that he has received is any indication, it is safe to conclude that Walpole has, indeed, done good.

Miami Laker Lorenzo Hampton Jr. off to great start in minor leagues Growing up in Miami Lakes Lorenzo Hampton Jr., knew baseball was his game. His dad is former Miami Dolphins running back Lorenzo Hampton Sr., but his son decided not to follow in his footsteps and try America’s favorite pastime instead. It paid off. Hampton, who just finished his senior season at Florida International University was recently drafted in the 28th round of the 2019 MLB draft by the Miami Marlins. He was assigned to the Marlins Gulf Coast League team and he played his first minor league game against the Houston Astros. So far in the first week, Hampton hit his first home run against the Cardinals and has three hits, four RBI’s and three runs scored through his first four games. According to baseball pundits, it’s rare when a MLB player gets drafted by his hometown team. For Hampton, it’s a dream come true. “It was definitely an honor to get picked by the Marlins,” he said. “I just plan on working hard and making all the people who believed in me proud.” Hampton, who was a standout player at Monsignor Edward Pace High, said he was at home when his area scout Adrian Puig called him with the good news.

LORENZO HAMPTON JR. His parents were out running errands when he got drafted but wanted to tell them right away. “I just called them and told them that I was going to the Marlins,” he said. “They were pretty excited for me and happy I was getting a chance to play for a team I always grew up watching.” The 6-5, 225-pound player said the Marlins picked him after scouting his college performance at FIU and the University of California Berkley. “They liked me for my power,” he said. “They want to see me be a run producer and that’s what I hope to be going forward.” Hampton said he initially enrolled at Berkley because the

school offered top-tier academics and schools. He said the experience on the West Coast helped him grow up. Hampton transferred to FIU after spending two years in California to be closer to home. He said playing under Panthers’ head coach Mervyl Melendez helped him develop into the player he is today. “He gave me the opportunity to grow, play in front of my family and become a captain on his team,” Hampton said. “It was one of the best experiences of my career to play for him.” His last at bat for the Panthers came on senior day when he hit a walk off solo blast to left field against Louisiana Tech. “It was an emotional day, but one I’ll never forget,” he said. Hampton finished his college career with a .278 batting average, 30 runs, 49 hits, nine home runs and 35 RBI. He said he hopes to get called up to the main roster for the Marlins someday but he must improve his skills in the organizations’ Gulf Coast League. Hampton said his parents were his biggest cheerleaders in Little League, high school, college and now the minor league. “They sacrificed everything they could for me throughout the years,” he said. “Everything I do, I do it for them.”

Safari LTD marks new eco-friendly toy partnership

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Safari LTD (Safari) located at 5960 Miami Lakes Drive recently announced ar new partnership with international toy brand, BiOBUDDi. Safari is a family owned toy company since 1982. Their motto has always been to provide children with toys that teach. BiOBUDDi is a Netherlands based company that uses a natural compound that is highly bio-based so that each building block is safe for children and the environment. Partnering with BiOBUDDi was a no-brainer for Safari. Since BiOBUDDi is the world’s first and best selling environmentally friendly building blocks for children, Safari knew this was something they wanted to be a part of. BiOBUDDi created these eco-friendly building blocks so that children can not only imagine a better world, but so they can build one. Just like other building block toys, these offer a similar look and feel but they are much better for the environment. These are the first ecofriendly blocks to hit the USA. It is a step in the right direction to have eco-friendly toys that help the environment and could possibly lead other toy companies to make their toys differently. “We’ve always seen the environment as part of Safari’s story. Our company is about appreciating and learning about animals and the natural world they inhabit with the ultimate goal of preserving it for generations to come. We’re thrilled to team up with BiOBUDDi, which is advocating for the same cause and brining their brand to the USA as our partner.” said Alexandre Pariente, CEO of Safari. The new building blocks are now available. For more information on this new partnership or to purchase the blocks visit www.safariltd.com.

Longtime MDC baseball coach Danny Price reboots his career PAGE 14

JULY 5, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

Danny Price, head coach at Miami Dade College (MDC) Baseball, will not be returning to the Shark’s dugout according to athletic director Anthony Fiorenza. Price is rerouting his career as a head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history at Florida International University (FIU) boasting an overall record of 1086-597 in his 28 years at the helm with the Golden Panthers. Price has recorded 298-160, crowned Southern Conference champions four years 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019 and runner up in 2018. In 2000, he was named employee of the year and alumni of the year at Florida International University. He started his coaching career as a baseball and football coach at Miami Central Senior High School 1974. Eventually opportunity knocked on his door when his old FIU coach asked him to come on as a volunteer assistant coach in 1978. After a year and a half of being a volunteer coach at FIU, Price was promoted to the head coaching position. The program produced numerous players

DANNY PRICE who would go on to play pro baseball including World Series champion Mike Lowell. Price led FIU to eight NCAA Division I regionals, six of them coming in his last 11 years as head coach. “He pushes us because he expects a lot,” said Jason Grana, a pitcher on that year’s MDC Sharks team. When Price talks, his players listen. His résumé speaks for itself. He is one of the few collegiate baseball coaches to record

a thousand coaching victories. He was named Trans America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1991, 1995 and 1998 while at FIU. He played an integral role in FIU going from a Division II school to a Division I school. At MDC, the winning has continued. The Sharks have been crowned Southern Conference Champions four times, finished as the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association National Runners-Up and the 2010 Florida College System Athletic Association State Runner-Up. “I have enjoyed it here. I don’t know how to do anything else,” Price said. “If you ever want to receive anything, give something; it’s amazing.” Price will be working with some foundations in Florida and in the Dominican Republic. “Leaders Unlimited” a nonprofit organization that reaches out to sport teams from High schools, colleges and Universities with the opportunity to speak leadership development and life skills with all its athletes.

FIU track/field stars Rains, Cutliff are All-Americans Gabrielle Rains earned Second-Team All-American honors in her first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships taking 13th in the discus in Austin, Texas while Clarissa Cutliff’s decorated career as an FIU Panther came to a conclusion in the high jump. Rains, a junior, threw 54.43m in the discus, the second best mark of her career. In qualifying for nationals, Rains threw her personal best of 56.90m at the NCAA East Preliminaries. The second-team honors cap a season that began with injury for Rains rendering her unable to compete the entire indoor season. Meanwhile, Cutliff earned All-American Honorable Mention honors placing 21st in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m. Competing in her seventh NCAA Championships Cutliff completed a career that saw her set the FIU school record in the high jump at 1.85m while advancing to the indoor and outdoor championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019. She finishes one of the most decorated careers in FIU history winning six Conference USA High Jump titles in addition to her AllAmerican accolades.\

Football is back at Florida Memorial University (FMU). Athletic director Ernest T. Jones, president Jaffus Hardick and the board of trustees announced the rebirth of football during a recent news conference where former Miami Dolphins legendary players Larry Little, an NFL Hall of Famer, and Nat Moore were on hand to lend their support. Since accepting his new role at the university, Jones has been rallying for the return of football after a 61-year Hiatus. The Lions will play their first game in 2020 at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami Gardens and compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as a member of the Sun Conference. “I would like to thank the Board of Trustees, president Hardrick, and the city of Miami Gardens community for their help and support,” said Jones. “It's a new day and FMU will become the global university academically and athletically that others will want to mirror.” Jones put together an elaborate presentation that included a partnership with Miami Gar-

dens that will not only increase revenue and enrollment at the university but also create a family amongst the students and the city in which they reside. The rebirth of the football program is part of Hardick’s vision to fully integrate the university into the greater community and expand educational and economic opportunities in South Florida. “We are elated about the impact the football program will have on FMU’s enrollment and student engagement,” said Hardick, who was flanked by Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert III and Sun Conference Commissioner Dustin Wilke. “It will also galvanize our alumni and community and elevate our university on a national scale.” The last football game played by the Lions was a 14-8 win over Albany State in 1958. The university, then called Florida Normal and Industrial Institute, competed in the Southeastern Athletic Conference. From 1945-58 the team finished with an all-time record of 41 wins, 25 loses and six ties with a break in the 1949 season. The school will name a head coach sometime this year.

Two Mater Academy girls finalists in Project CSGIRLS

Mater Academy Middle School students Lorena Pita and Sara Pedraja were named finalists for the 2019 Project CSGIRLS Competition for middle school girls. With the assistance of their adviser Michael Mitrani, the girls created their projects that represent innovative, creative and impactful applications of technology for social good. The two students are the only finalists from the state of Florida, and they are invited to the Project CSGIRLS National

Gala in Washington D.C., where they will announce the National Winners. Founded during the summer of 2013, Project CSGIRLS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in computing and technology. The organization’s unique idea of a technology and computer science competition for middle school girls stemmed from the fact that a large chunk of learning and development occurs during the critical middle school period.

Families and students reflected on words of encouragement, fifth grade quarter awards, special area and annual awards, American Legion Award and the coveted William Castro Apple Award. Two students who have impacted students and teachers are selected to receive the Castro award which was established to honor the memory of fifth grader William Luis Castro who lost his life in a car accident due to a careless driver on I-95 three years ago. Students chosen must display some of William’s amazing qualities – kindness, determination, friendliness, perseverance, cooperation, strong morals and strong ethics. The award has special meaning – the apple stands for the apple William so often shared with his teachers after lunch out of his giving spirit. The rainbow on the award stands for a bright rainbow students saw during a walk in 2016 to honor William’s birthday. MLEC’s Harbinger editors sign off and turn over to new editors By Valeria Bula and Sabine Joseph Special to The Miami Laker Four years. That is the actual, chronological, time that we spend in high school. But it is so much more than time spent and – paradoxically – it somehow feels both like a lifetime and over in the blink of an eye. Now that it’s over, we want to say a few last things as the editors of The Harbinger. It was a tumultuous year: for us personally, for our #PinkRoom staff and the community and world. The news was not always good. Politics is as ugly as ever. There were heart breaking stories of tragedy and dysfunction. There was also a lot to celebrate. We published eight issues, including one that was distributed to each and every student, teacher and faculty member on the first day of school. The staff works hard to sell ad space, our only source of revenue. Our online readership continues to grow, reaching readers around the world. Our social media presence remains strong. Our school was named the best magnet school in the country. Why? Because a group of almost entirely working-class, black and brown kids – many of us first generation Americans that had to translate our Miami Lakes Educational Center applications to our parents – met a team of teachers that taught us,

believed in us and pushed us to succeed. The Harbinger was a labor of love. We poured our heart and soul into writing, reporting, photographing and editing. We stressed over deadlines, maybe even squabbled a bit. And we did it, one issue at a time, we covered big news stories and fun features. We wrote about prom fashion and political upheaval. We interviewed experts. We connected with journalists, attorneys, doctors, scientists and professionals. We made an impact. Neither one of us is sure that we will pursue journalism as a career, but what we gained from The Harbinger, from the Pink Room, made us better. To our staff, we believe in

you. When you’re juggling articles and assignments, essays, projects and math homework, believe us – you’ll survive. We are proud of the work we’ve done in our newsroom and we know that we built on the legacy of all the staffers that came before us (shout out to our Pink Room Family!), we are leaving that legacy in your hands. To our teacher, Neyda Borges, thank you. There is simply not enough space to how you have helped us, taught us, inspired us. We love you! To our readers, followers and alumni, thank you for your support. Thank you for reading and sharing our work, for encouraging us, for answering our emails and requests for interviews. Please stay in touch.

VALERIA BULA and SABINE JOSEPH welcome the new editors Devin Dubon and Abigail Castro.

M. Lakes United Methodist Church hosts Social Media forum on July 13

Miami Lakes United Methodist Church (MLUMC) located at 14800 Ludlam Road, will host “Social Media and Our Kids: Prevent, Prepare, Protect and Pursue” starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13. In a press release, the church said “Our kids and community now extend further than before. This allows us to connect with each other better and faster, but that also means we can hurt each other more and faster than ever before.” Approximately 15 percent of U.S. high school students report that they’ve been bullied online in the past year, according to the CDC. A Pew Research Center survey found that the number could be even higher at 59 percent according to Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez, CNN. MLUMC is on a mission to change lives and build community. So the church invited Armando Sotero Jr. who was born and raised in the Hialeah/Miami Lakes area and served over 26 years in law enforcement, to share with parents and teens the tools they can use to navigate online bullying, predators and comparison/ depression. Due to his extensive work in community relations, including both juvenile and family programs, he has agreed to speak on this timely topic that is of interest to the community. Understanding the connected world of kids and teens can be challenging for parents because adults don’t communicate online in the same way and are not necessarily using the same social media. Even more challenging is the reality that there’s always something new coming around the corner. The purpose of this workshop is to help the community better understand how the kids are using social networking and to provide attendees with tips and tools that can used to help minimize negative experiences and maximize the positive opportunities that social media has to offer. The forum is free. Registration is required. Visit www.hopemlumc.com/socialmedia-our-kids/ to register. Or call 305-821-7274 for more information.

LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Got a story idea about your family, school, church, organization or even a neighbor? Email us at meganm@miamilaker.com, or call 305-817-4078.
