The spirt of Miami Lakes Optimist Club longtime coach and member Jack McCall lives on. His 10U Athletics team, also known as the Green Machine, won the championship under McCall’s son, Chris, who coached his father’s team before his death with Jack McCall by his side. And like a Hollywood movie’s perfect ending, McCall’s grandson, Chris McCall Jr., struck out the final Angels’ batter to seal the championship for his team. Jack McCall adopted the moniker The Green Machine years ago as the Little League version of the 1970s Cincinnati Reds’ Big Red Machine, and because of his Irish heritage. “This was like a Hollywood movie, it was meant to be,” said

Alex Castroman, a longtime club member and close friend to the McCall family. The A’s and Angels met in a single championship game which saw many lead changes. With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning and runners on base, the Angels were seeking to make a move. But Chris McCall Jr., was called on to keep his team on top and delivered a strike out to end the game and claim the championship. “We all know Jack McCall was on that field tonight,” Castroman said. “We can all here him with his famous chant, ‘Here comes the Green, Hey.’” McCall passed away in March at the age of 83. He was a member of the Optimist Club for more than 42 THE GREEN MACHINE, Optimist Club’s 10U baseball team celebrates winning division championship under Jack McCall’s son Chris, now the coach. years.

Former North Carolina State and Hialeah Miami Lakes basketball star Chris Corchiani, community activist David Oliver, community pioneer George Deming, and community activist Javier Zapata were enshrined into the Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame for the Class of 2019. They were inducted to the town’s highest honor for sports and community activism during a recent ceremony at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club club house. The committee believed that each of these four individuals epitomizes the basic criteria for selection, that they have made significant contribution to their sports and that they have substantial connections to the Town of Miami Lakes. The committee included chair Roman Garcia, vice chair Helen Roldan, secretary Marcos Gutierrez and committee members Jim Hamilton and Karyna Cid. The Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame Inductees include:

• Chris Corchiani was a star basketball player at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School earning the title Florida “Mr. Basketball”, an award given to the best basketball player in the state in 1986 and 1987 which included a State Championship. From there he received a scholarship to North Carolina State University where he was a four-year starter and he became the first player in NCAA history to record 1,000 career assists. He led the Wolfpack to the NCAA tournament in three of his four years at the school and was the first college player to record 20 assists in a game. He would have a successful professional career of 14 years including three stops in the NBA – Orlando, Boston and Washington – followed by stops internationally playing for teams in Italy, Turkey, Spain and Germany. • David Oliver has been a community activist in Miami Lakes for over 20 years. Prior to PICTURED at Hall of Fame induction ceremony are (from left) Councilmember Josh Dieguez, his time here, he was a four-year Mayor Manny Cid, inductees Chris Corchiani, George Deming, David Oliver and Javier Zapata and Councilmember Luis Collazo. His athletic prowess included basketball, track & field, and wrestling. He is a member of numerous committees in the town including Elderly Affairs and Loch Isle Homeowners association. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Miami Lakes Senior softball program, co-founder of the Miami Lakes Senior basketball program and coordinator of the Miami Lakes Senior games. He has also been the president of the Miami Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club for over 30 years. • George Deming is one of the visionaries that can be credited with founding the Miami Lakes Optimist in the 1960s. As the program evolved, he continued to play a key role as he was involved in the implementation of building the first clubhouse which was a great feat and would become the second home to so many kids in the town. In the early 1970s, he was the Youth Work director and responsible to coordinate all coaches and he was instrumental in establishing the baseball, basketball and soccer programs and spearheaded the creation of the Opti-Mrs., a group of women who organized the cheerleading programs. His contributions continued in help-

ing to organize the Special Olympics, for youths with special needs. • Javier Zapata was born and raised in the town and attended Miami Lakes Ele-mentary, Miami Lakes Middle and Barbara Goleman High School earning valedictorian honors. He participated in multiple youth sports programs as a child. After high school, he attended Brown University and while away found out the programs that he loved in his town were diminishing, in part because they rely on volunteers to administer them. That is when he applied for and was awarded the Royce Fellowship for Sports and Society through Brown and he partnered with Miami Lakes Optimist to create the Flag Football program, that to this day is one of if not the largest Flag Football program in the state with over 400 participants. He served as commissioner for the first several years. Upon graduating from Brown, he was accepted into Yale Law School. During this time, he thought the program would succeed, but this was not the case. He returned to South Florida where he serves as an assistant County Attorney for Miami Dade and returned to the program again. He worked to grow the program back and it is now at new heights.

BLAAC Boutique celebrates its fifth year anniversary on Main St. By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff BLACC Boutique (BLACC) owner Stephanie Farah always wanted to own a boutique because she loves making people happy and clothes makes people feel happy. On May 29 she celebrated the five year anniversary of BLACC on Main Street in Town Center. The anniversary was filled with a sale and a celebration including her most loyal VIP customers. Farah is very proud of her accomplishments thus far. “Owning a boutique is a lot of hard work, it’s not as easy as it seems to others,” she says. Throughout these five years Farah has learned so much and truly grown throughout this experience. She started BLACC by herself and has truly been there throughout all their phases. BLACC still prides itself in being the only local boutique to offer plus sizes. This has been the key to BLACC’s success. It is hard to find almost any stores that offer stylish clothing that comes in plus sizes, at BLACC you don’t have to sacrifice style when it comes to plus size. BLACC’s motto is “size doesn’t matter, style does.” Farah believes this statement is still true and that she has truly stuck by that. She values her

Later that night McCall will be inducted posthumously in the organization’s inaugural Hall of Fame at Don Shula’s Hotel in

Tommy ‘T’ Peña Foundation will mentor youths THE MIAMI LAKER

On June 8, Miami Dade Parks and Miami-Dade County District 13 Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo Jr. joined the family and friends of Tommy “T” Peña at Norman and Jean Reach Park located at 7895 N.W. 176 Street, to celebrate his life and legacy and kick off the “Tommy T Foundation,” a local not-for-profit organization aimed at mentoring and engaging youth, ages 5-17 in arts and sports experiences. “Norman and Jean Reach Park was Tommy’s home away from home. He left quite a remarkable impression on the park and his community,” said Bovo. “I am so pleased to see our beloved Tommy remembered in this way.” “This is indeed a young man who grew up in the park and lived a park life to the fullest,” said Miami-Dade Parks director Maria I. Nardi. “Thanks to the Tommy T Foundation, more children and teens, who may not have it within their means, will be able to have those same great park experiences.”

The inscription on Peña’s memorial plaque reads: “A life well-lived is not measured by the number of years that we live, but instead by the lives that we positively influence while we are here. Peña was born and raised in Palm Springs North and although he passed away at 24 years of age, Peña paved the way to follow by not just how he lived his life, but how he influenced others to experience their own. He inspired those that knew him by his actions for the greater good, actions toward digging deeper and striving higher, living kinder and loving harder. Peña was not big in stature but no one had more heart than he. How many lives will you positively influence? In Loving Memory of Tommy T. Peña 1992-2017.”

BGEC’s CEA students in Project Citizen competition The seventh grade students of the Civic Engagement Academy at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) participated in the Project Citizen State competition on May 28 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. The students' project called for the opening of primary elections to registered independent voters who are currently closed out from this critical process in their republic. The theme of

their project is “No Taxation Without Participation.” BGEC won first place for oral presentation and portfolio. The entire class researched the topic and worked very hard in putting the project together. Eight students represented the class at the competition. The school is very proud of the students as well as their teachers, John Brady and Mercy Mendez.

Shula’s Steak 2 server saves life

GABRIELA BLANCA JORGE a veteran server at Shula’s Steak 2 restaurant on Main Street, rushed into action on June 13 to help save a life. During lunch, one of the guests dashed into the service station apparently choking and in distress. Jorge was the first to see her in a frantic state, eyes bulging and turning blue. She recognized what was happening and immediately went behind her to apply the Heimlich maneuver. The first two attempts were unsuccessful but on the third thrust, the food was dislodged and evacuated. The guest recovered and stayed a little longer to thank Jorge for her quick thinking and lifesaving training.

M. Lakes United Methodist hosts Social Media forum to protect kids on July 13 THE MIAMI LAKER

Miami Lakes United Methodist Church (MLUMC) located at 14800 Ludlam Road, will host “Social Media and Our Kids: Prevent, Prepare, Protect and Pursue” starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13. In a press release, the church said “Our kids and community now extend further than before. This allows us to connect with each other better and faster, but that also means we can hurt each other more and faster than ever before.” Approximately 15 percent of U.S. high school students report that they’ve been bullied online in the past year, according to the CDC. A Pew Research Center survey found that the number could be even higher at 59 percent according to Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez, CNN. MLUMC is on a mission to change lives and build community. So the church invited Armando Sotero Jr. who was born and raised in the Hialeah/Miami Lakes area and served over 26 years in law enforcement, to share with parents and teens the tools they can use to navigate online bullying,

predators and comparison/ depression. Due to his extensive work in community relations, including both juvenile and family programs, he has agreed to speak on this timely topic that is of interest to the community. Understanding the connected world of kids and teens can be challenging for parents because adults don’t communicate online in the same way and are not necessarily using the same social media. Even more challenging is the reality that there’s always something new coming around the corner. The purpose of this workshop is to help the community better understand how the kids are using social networking and to provide attendees with tips and tools that can used to help minimize negative experiences and maximize the positive opportunities that social media has to offer. The forum is free. Registration is required. Visit www.hopemlumc.com/socialmedia-our-kids/ to register. Or call 305-821-7274 for more information.

Miami Lakes reaches settlement on somber home PAGE 8

JUNE 21, 2019

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The nightmare for Miami Lakes residents who endured a spate of disturbances from people living at a home operating as a dormitory for recovery drug addicts is over. Miami Lakes and the homeowners, Rode Blanco and Jenny Del Pino, who leased the home to Florida Health and Life Recovery Center at 8821 N.W. 153 Terrace, reached a settlement agreement that includes terminating the lease with the agency. The lease expires in December 2020, said assistant town attorney Lorenzo Cobiella in a report at the June 4 regular council meeting. The somber home was used for a dormitory for recovering drug addicts who were treated at another location. But the neighbors claimed they allegedly caused disturbances and the police were called to the location to investigate. Reportedly, no arrests were made but the police had to break up several verbal and physical altercations. Last year, residents turned to council members for help but town officials hands were tied then since drug addition is considered a disability, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition, drug treatment centers can be placed anywhere under the Fair Housing Act. Mayor Manny Cid reached out to U.S. Senator Marco Rubio who’s sponsoring a bill

THE MIAMI LAKER

to repeal a federal law which allows drug treatment centers in residential neighborhoods under the ADA and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or SAMHSA. But in the meantime, Miami Lakes strengthened the town’s code enforcement standards and the occupational licenses procedures as the first step to curtail the problem. According to Town Attorney Raul Gastesi, U.S. Bank initiated foreclosure proceedings less than two years ago on the home, but the property owners, the bank and Miami Lakes reached an agreement which allows them to return once again to the real property and use it as their homestead. Blanco and Del Pino can stave off foreclosure by making the mortgage payments among the conditions under the agreement. If not, U.S. Bank would take over the property permanently and Blanco and Del Pino can file for bankruptcy which would kill the deal, Gastesi said. Also, the deal includes Miami Lakes’ agreement to suspend their accruing code violations subject to their compliance with the terms of the agreement. “The proposed settlement agreement will protect the health and welfare of the town and bring the real property into full compliance with the town’s code,” Gastesi said.

In other Council actions: • Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s current budget to carry forward the fund balance in the special revenue fund based on fiscal year 2017-2018, recognize grants awarded to the town and donations received from specific town events, and amend select budget line items to provide funding for projects in the capital projects fund. Some of the carry forward fund balance adjustments include general fund balance of $4.2 million for Hurricane Irma expenses for clean up and recovery efforts; $506,000 for litigation and settlement reserve; and $769,000 for onetime capital improvement expenditures ($316,670 for Miami Lakes Optimist Park master plan and $150,000 for Optimist storage facility). • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance which prohibits overnight street parking for commercial vehicles within the town’s rights-of-way adjacent to residential neighborhoods, parks and government buildings, indicating they create hazardous conditions by blocking visibility for other motorists and encroach onto travel lanes and sidewalks. The ordinance bans parking in any right-of-way abutting either a residential district or a government facility that contains a park, public playground, library, fire station and police

station. • Council members approved a resolution to reestablish the town’s Blasting Advisory Board to resume making recommendations to resolve the damages blasting is allegedly causing to residents’ homes. But the new group will consist of about 7 members instead of 14 and given a budget for their meetings. • Council members approved a resolution to amend conditions to an indoor shooting range in an industrial district of Miami Lakes. Andy’s Shooting Range is currently housed inside an industrial building at 14000 N.W. 82 Avenue. The resolution would modify the final as-built layout of the facility, the allowable noise levels, the use of the range by the public and regarding the hours of operation. • Lawmakers approved Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez’s recommendation for town staff to evaluate the possibility for funding for Miami Lakes Optimist Park improvements, the N.W. 154 Street Bridge Park, the K-9 Cove dog park, lighting at Barbara Goleman High’s athletic fields and a new sporting field at Bob Graham

Education Center. He said residents want the bridge park to prevent an I-75 interchange at Miami Lakes Drive which would generate more traffic through the town. Rodriguez said he’s seeking a system of options where “everyone” will be happy, especially with the methods used to fund the projects. “It’s giving the town options and letting us know the costs for hard infrastructure that has to be done right away,” Rodriguez said. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Marilyn Ruano’s proposal to terminate the contract with the town’s police school resource officers protecting Miami Lakes’ schools since Miami-Dade County is providing its own resource officers. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to review the town’s lobbyists duties since Miami Lakes was unaware about the county’s plans to change aviation regulations for Opa-locka Airport which would impede on further development for the town, and proposals to open-up the bridges at N.W. 154 Street and N.W. 170 Street.

‘Furrever Friend for Lucas’ GoFundMe needs funds to get service dog for Lucas Lucas de Santis is a five year old boy with autism. His parents Dulce and Angelo de Santis started a campaign in April to raise money to get their son a service dog. Their goal is $25,000 and they’ve currently raised a little over $6,000. Lucas would benefit from a service dog in numerous ways such as, calming effects, safety and mainly being a companion to him. Lucas tends to have many different behaviors and can get aggressive, having a service dog would help him tremendously. Raising funds has been a

struggle, since they need to raise the money by mid-February 2020 in order to receive the service dog by March of next year. They’ve already picked out the service dog they want, Tripp a poodle. The company they are getting Tripp from is Creating New Tails, which is based in South Florida. Both Ducle and Angelo are trying every way possible to raise the necessary funds to get their son the help he needs. The go fund me link is: www. gofundme.com/furrever-friendfor-lucas.

Dr. Michael White opens new chiropractic practice in M. Lakes THE MIAMI LAKER

By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff Dr. Michael White has been a chiropractic physician for 15 years but never owned his own practice, until May 11. Having his own practice was always a goal of Dr. White’s and when the right opportunity came he took it. His Chiropractic and Rehabilitation facility is located at 14645 N.W. 77 Avenue in Miami Lakes. White didn’t always know he wanted to become a chiropractor until he was involved in a serious head-on collision. Due to this accident, he went and saw a chiropractor that really helped him recover from the accident. He then knew this was his calling. Being that he was born and raised in Hialeah he knew he wanted to come back to Florida and work nearby home. He attended Sherman College in South Carolina where he received his doctorate degree. White and his family currently reside in Miami Lakes.

Most of his patients have been involved in some sort of accident and White truly believes he can relate to his patients on a personal level due to his own experience. Some patients that are under enormous pain feel as if no one knows what they’re going through. White always shows his patients the photos of his car accident so they can see he really knows what they’re dealing with. Chiropractic and Rehabilitation treats patients of all ages, weather they were involved in an auto accident, sports injury or are in pain for any other reason. White’s method of treating patients is to educate his patients on what they can do in their daily lives that will help them relieve pain without having to rely on medication. The alignment of the spine can solve many issues. The center offers physical therapy, massages, chiropractic care, rehab treatments and more. White’s goal is to try and diagnose the problem and cor-

STU track and field athletes make history during recent National Championships History was made by St. Thomas University (STU) track and field athletes recently at the NAIA Track and Field National Championships in Orange Beach, Alabama and at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. Jose Penalver highlights the list becoming the first NAIA First Team All-American in program history and holding the highest finish in the Top-10. He clinched the overall seventh spot in the 800-meter (1:53.66). The Venezuelan native is a sophomore and in his first year at STU. When asked how he felt on the big accomplishment, Penalver said, “I am happy, I can’t wait to continue to grow a legacy and later a dynasty for the 800-meter event.” Susana Gutierrez clinches the position for the first NAIA Second Team All-American with a 13th place finish in the

marathon (3:28:25.31). Gutierrez continues to add to her resume at STU with her second NAIA Nationals appearance in the same year (Cross Country). So far this year Gutierrez has clinched the first ranking in program history for both Cross Country and Track and Field while also making it’s first berth in both respective sports. The accomplishments rounded out with Leslie Marcin and Sarah Bomkamp Marcin recording a 12th overall finish in the 1,500-meter and Bom-kamp finished the marathon with a 32nd overall finish. “Although we thought we were coming out higher, I am extremely proud of this team and how much they have accomplished from one year to the next. The best is yet to come, and we are ready for it,” said head coach Carlos Maymi.

A day after Austin Shenton became the highest Florida International University’s player drafted since 2014, Javier Valdes, Nick MacDonald, Lorenzo Hampton Jr., and Tyler Myrick all heard their names called on the final day of the 2019 MLB Draft. Valdes was the first Panther to come off the board when the Atlanta Braves selected him with the 637th pick in the 21st round. Valdes split time between behind the plate and first base while hitting .255 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 2019. One of two pitchers taken off the FIU roster, MacDonald went in the 23rd round with the 688th pick to the New York Mets. The Panther starter went 4-5 in 2019 with a career-best 3.91 ERA over 76 innings pitched while striking out 68 batters.

After finishing his collegiate career in story-book fashion, Hampton gets to write another chapter as the big righty was picked by his hometown team, the Miami Marlins, with the 831st pick in the 28th round. FIU's lone senior for the 2019 campaign started in 45 games and batted .255 with five homers and 21 RBIs that included his walk-off home run against Louisiana Tech in his final collegiate at-bat. Despite missing the entire 2019 season due to injury, Myrick was picked in the 40th round by the Texas Rangers with the 1,195th overall pick. The righty went 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 appearances in 2018. Shenton was selected 156th overall in the fifth round a day before by the Seattle Mariners becoming FIU's first Panther taken in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Five FIU baseball players win spots in MLB draft

Three FIU baseball stars honored on all Conference USA teams THE MIAMI LAKER

The Conference USA league office recently announced its yearly baseball all-conference teams as Florida International University was represented by Logan Allen (First Team), Austin Shenton (Second Team) and Jarrett Ford (All-Freshman Team) after the trio's outstanding year on the diamond. Allen, who was named as a utility player on the first team, built on his Freshman AllAmerican campaign last season by leading all of C-USA with 120 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched for a 12.86 Ks-per-9 innings ratio to place in the top 15 in the nation in that category. The left-handed pitcher went 4-6 on the mound with a 3.11 ERA and held opposing batters to a .231 average while winning three C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors. Allen's three weekly honors as a pitcher were tied for the most in the league in 2019. At the plate Allen was also a force after batting .276 with three homers and five RBIs. Shenton led the Panther offensive attack with a stat line of .330, seven home runs and 47

RBIs. The junior third baseman led the Blue and Gold in batting average (.330), hits (65), RBIs (47), doubles (11), triples (2), total bases (101) and walks (28). The Bellingham, Washington, native finished the season by reaching base in each of the final 29 games despite having his 22-game hit streak ended on May 14 against Stetson. Shenton's 22-game streak is currently tied for the fourlongest hitting streak in the country this season. Ford exploded on the college scene with a five-hit, fiveRBI opening weekend against

Stony Brook and has since earned a .277 batting average with a .357 OB percentage. The Decatur, Georgia, native started 38 games at center field and scored 35 runs to tie for the team lead. The speedy freshman was also a menace on the base paths, after swiping 17 bags including five against nationally ranked Texas Tech on May 7 to tie a program record for most stolen bases in a single game. Ford's 17 stolen bases ranked as the sixth most in the conference and the most by a Panther rookie since Dennis Diaz stole 29 as a freshman in 2002.

Her jobs have spanned from teaching, to mentoring teachers to writing curriculum for the math department. Teaching has always been her passion and loves to see the excitement in the eyes of her students when they discovered something or grasped a concept. Lisowski is excited about the next chapter in life which will be filled with her new grandson and travel. Both teachers will be dearly missed by the BGEC family. Five Miami Dade College (MDC) students and aspiring artists have been honored with the 2019 Frances Wolfson Art Scholarship to support the costs of tuition, books, fees and art supplies. The 2019 scholarship winners are MDC students Andrea Araica, Anthony Campos, Quentin Gibson-Mays and Jacquelyn Molina, and New World School of the Arts student Angelica Brito. They will each receive $1,500 to support their studies next academic year. Their winning art submissions – including original paintings, graphite portraits and mixed media – were on display at a recent luncheon hosted by the Miami Dade College Foundation.

“Thank you to Frances Wolfson and the Wolfson family for your passion and drive to help young artists like myself succeed,” said Gibson-Mays, who is pursuing an associate degree in graphic design at MDC. “Art for me is an escape form the real world and helps me get through life. This scholarship is helping me afford certain art materials that I will need to pursue my dreams.” The late South Florida artist and philanthropist Frances Wolfson established the scholarship in 1964 using proceeds from the sale of six of her paintings to Hallmark. The scholarship helps young artists pursue their dreams, supporting more than 200 students so far.

Jose Marti’s Scherezda Lozada wins Leader of Tomorrow/Student Involvement Award

Jose Marti’s Scherezada Lozada was a finalist and winner of the Miami-Dade County PTA/PTSA Leader of Tomorrow/Student Involvement Award which recognizes students that have made an impact in their school and community. Lozada is a member of the Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy PTSA and their own student representative. Lozada, with her dedicated nature has carried out an annual uniform drive for the past three years that has brought great benefit to the school, local charities and even foreign countries. Together with the PTSA, she collects approximately 1,000 used uniforms annually. During the summer, she spends most of her time wash-

ing, sewing and preparing these uniforms for a used uniforms salel at the school orientation where students from lowincome households can buy uniforms for much cheaper prices than regular stores. All proceeds collected are then donated in the St. Jude Walk/Run against childhood cancer. Some of the uniforms are also shipped to Panama, Cuba, Colombia, Guatemala and Nicaragua where they are given to unprivileged families. In the past three years, she has collected over 3,000 uniforms where approximately 1,800 of those have been shipped to those families through Salvation Army and Sirvas del Segrada Corazon Corp.

Although our organization worked hard to choose one student from various local schools, it was without a doubt that she would be the one. Bob Graham Education Center singers perform in Universal Studios program

BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER was well represented on May 21 when two talented groups of student musicians sang for the second year in a row in the Universal Studios STARS Performance Program. The Bobcat Singers sang under the direction of Alejandro Fuenmayor and the Glee Club was under the direction of Audrey Carballo. Both groups enjoyed huge audiences and had fun in the park after their performances. Both Fuenmayor and Carballo are extremely proud of these young talented singers. Barbara Goleman reinstates newspaper after eight years By Guadalupe Cabrera and Corina Del Barro Special to The Miami Laker During the summer of 2018, senior Guadalupe Cabrera and junior Chika Ojukwu founded The Vanguard newspaper at Barbara Goleman Senior High (BGSH). This was the first time in eight years since BGSH allowed students to pursue their journalistic creativity. The first paper, The Gator Times, was cancelled in 2011 after, then teacher and newspaper sponsor, Robert Inza, took a new position at the school and no one wanted to succeed him. When asked how he felt about the cancelation of The Gator Times, Inza said, “I knew with the caliber of students we had, there would be a student led paper in the future. I didn’t know for sure what form it would take but I knew it was coming.” Since the last article The Gator Times published, there has been a gap in the journalism community at the school. And it wasn’t until this year when Cabrera and Ojukwu joined forces to make a change and continue the legacy Inza left behind by launching their online newspaper: The Vanguard. The term ‘Vanguard,’ meaning pioneer or leader in new developments, was chosen as the name of the paper because creating a paper was like “heading into uncharted waters since there was no guidance, experi-

ence, or support” says Ojukwu. The Vanguard’s aim is to continue the legacy The Gator Times left in the heart of the swamp, allowing a student-led paper to educate their fellow pupils about issues on a local and national level, including many topics pertaining to their interests and concerns. During the first stages of The Vanguard’s birth, the online publication added as many articles as possible, capturing the attention of many individuals of the student body who had something to say; a story to tell. Being this inclusive in-staff representation created an atmosphere of excitement that rippled across the school among students and teachers alike to read the print version when it was announced. “I never thought the newspaper would be brought back to life so seeing it in my hands again was a pleasant surprise. To have a voice in school is a really important thing and the Vanguard provides us that,” said 11th-grade student Julian Camejo. In this manner, The Vanguard discontinues the silence and brings anew the noise of fact. For these reasons, they have adopted the motto “delivering the truth” which acts as a statement of dedication from staff members to the student body, representing the manifestation of their words on the page.

BGEC eighth-grade students join in college tour around the state THE MIAMI LAKER

A group of 50 eighth-grade students from Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) participated in the College Offers Unlimited Possibilities (COUP) tour of several colleges in Florida’s State University System from May 28-30. The tour afforded these highly motivated and academically advanced students an opportunity to visit the University of Central Florida, University of Florida (UF), Florida State University (FSU), University of South Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University.

At each of the universities, the students had a chance to tour the campus and meet with students and staff to learn about preparing for college and the respective programs offered at each institution. At UF, the COUP also visited the Bob Graham Center for Public Service whose mission is renewing the values, knowledge and skills of citizenship and training the next generation of public and private sector leaders. At FSU, the COUP met with the assistant vice president for

student affairs Brandon Bowden and his staff who shared information about college life and provided all the students with a gift bag from FSU. The students were warmly welcomed at all the other universities as well. BGEC teacher Katrina Herrero serves as the COUP sponsor and was the lead teacher involved in organizing this opportunity for the students meeting with them since the start of the school year to educate them on the unlimited possibilities offered by pursuing a higher education.

BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER COUP students and teachers are pictured at the University of Florida during their recent tour to visit various Florida universities.

Applications available for the 2019-2020 school year!
