M.L. Middle School wins national ‘We the People’ Vol. 45, No. 10

Lisa Deyarza’s students at Miami Lakes Middle School won first place at the national We the People National Invitational in Washington D.C. As part of the national competition, the young scholars of law and government tested their knowledge for Supreme Court cases, documents, current events and the U.S. Constitution.

After the students won the state competition, they were seeking $35,000 in expenses to attend the competition in the Nation’s Capitol.

They set up a GoFundMe page to raise the money.

ly meeting on Tuesday, May 14 and council members were expected to approve three ordinances, a host of resolutions and new business items for lawmakers’ discussions. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance which now permits decks in the street side yard setback of RU1Z corner lots providing for a minimum setback of three feet and to allow up to 60 percent of the required yards of such lots to be impervious. • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance to adopt its own franchise agreement with FPL for a 30 year period.

The effective date of the ordinance would be the termination date of Miami-Dade’s current agreement with FPL (May 25, 2020) or an earlier date, if the town is able to prematurely terminate its interlocal with the county prior to May 25, 2020.

The town is expected to receive about $2.3 million in the first year of the new FPL agreement, the ordinance says.

The safety signals would be ideal for drivers on that road to be alerted when pedestrians are crossing the street. • Lawmakers were expected to approve Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to explore Coral Gables’ approach to treat the cause of the staining produced by Black Olive trees to determine if it would be a good practice for Miami Lakes’ effort to protect Black Olive trees throughout the town. • Council members were expected to approve Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to eliminate the porta potties and install proper bathrooms for the outdoor fields at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. Royal Oaks Park and Miami Lakes Picnic Park West have indoor bathroom facilities but the town’s oldest park doesn’t.

The town would have to enter into an agreement with MiamiDade County Public Schools which owns portion of the park next to Miami Lakes Middle School.

Cid said installing the new bathrooms would cost the town an estimated $500,000.

Graham Cos. has two 2019 Inn Key Award winners THE MIAMI LAKER

Since 1995, The Greater Miami & The Beaches Hotel Association has hosted an annual tribute to all hotel employees, the Inn Key Awards. There are over 950 hospitality, corporate and government leaders that join hoteliers and their management teams to celebrate their hourly hotel employees which are the “heart” of the tourism industry.

This year there were over 357 nominees recognized in 13 categories broken down between hotels that are over/ under 200 rooms ranging from Bellmen and Housekeepers to

Culinary and Engineering personnel.

At Graham Hospitality, a division of The Graham Companies, there have been many past nominees that have won in different categories. The most recent winner was Dave Gergely from Shula’s Golf Club who won the 2018 Lodging Employee of the Year, the top category for a nominee to win.

The award luncheon was held on May 3 at the Hilton Downtown and once again Graham Hospitality had winners from their nominated group includ-

ing Sergio Bacallao (Miami Lakes Hotel and Golf) Front Desk Employee of the Year, and Joham Beauvais (Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club) Culinary/Kitchen Employee of the Year.

Bacallao has been at Miami Lakes Hotel and Golf for over a year and was recently nominated as MVP for the first quarter of the year in Graham Hospitality. He has quickly earned the respect of customers as well as fellow employee and listed consistently in all of the positive reviews for the hotel on Trip Advisor.

Bacallao claims that life has taught him to always be the best version of yourself and never

give up and he has proven to the industry just that.

Beauvais started his culinary career in 1981 and later earned his Associates in Science degree in Culinary Arts. He began working at Shula’s Steak 2 and has been there for 15 years.

While passionate for cooking, he also is a Deacon at his church for over 21 years and is president of the Men’s Ministry there as well. He understands the importance of continuing his education and giving back.

For being in a position typically considered behind the scenes he has proven to be a standout star.

The legislation requries the United States Postal Service to take the necessary steps to help the two cities accomplish their goals.

Erika Castroman continues her holiday homeless gifts PAGE 4

In 2017, Miami Lakes resident Erika Castroman was on her way to a Christmas dinner with her family when she encountered a group of homeless people in downtown Miami.

Seeking to brighten their holiday spirit, Castroman handed them 100 bags containing hygiene products including shampoo, tooth brushes and tooth paste and deodorant and nonperishable food.

The following year, she handed out 150 bags and this year, she’s seeking to give out 200 bags during the Christmas holiday.

“Every year the community, friends and family rally behind me for this great cause,” said Castroman, who calls her initiative “Stockings Filled with Love.”

Castroman, who is now attending St. Thomas University, is an advocate for the homeless. Some of them, she said, lost their jobs and homes due to financial issues and Castroman took on the role of playing Santa Claus during Christmas time.

Last year, Castroman said she handed a man a bag and he immediately opened it and cleaned his feet with one of the hygiene products. “I was happy for him,” she said.

Castroman is banking on more support to reach her goal of handing out at least 200 bags.

“I want to thank everyone who donated to this cause,” she said.

Castroman’s father, Alex, said it’s so rewarding to see people from every walk of life reaching out to his daughter. “We thank them for all of their support.”

Youth Council member reflects on her activities in Miami Lakes

(Editor’s Note: Ariana Rejas is a member of the Town of Miami Lakes Youth Council.

Her reflections of life in Miami Lakes are included in this essay submitted by the Town.)

My name is Ariana Rejas and I am 16 years old. I was born in Peru and am the daughter of two Peruvian immigrants as well.

I grew up watching my parents make sacrifices for the betterment of the family. My parents were surgeons in Peru and they gave that up to come to America for other opportunities.

My parents told me to focus on my studies while my Dad would deliver pizzas and newspapers. On his free time, he would study and my mom would baby-sit, clean houses and also study to become a nurse.

When they got jobs in Miami, we moved and hoped for something better. Growing up in New York, and then Miami, has impacted my life very much in positive ways such as discovering my love for music.

In my journey of learning and appreciating the arts, I was able to compete at Carnegie Hall and the Youth Prague Bohemian Festival with my orchestras.

Currently at the School for Advanced Studies, music has been one of my escapes from the stress of a busy schedule.

Along with my passion for music, I have an immense love for the medical field and aspire ERIKA CASTROMAN presents a holiday gift bag to a home- to become a neurosurgeon in the less person in downtown Miami last year.

I spend a lot of my weekends volunteering with the Town of Miami Lakes, the Youth Activities Task Force and at rehearsals for benefit concerts.

I’ve spent most of my life living in Miami Lakes, going to school at Miami Lakes K-8 Center and graduating top of my class.

I’ve made many memories with friends and classmates in Miami Lakes and I consider it another home and piece of my heart.

I think helping people is one of the best things that you can do and I always try to make myself available to help others when in need.

Begin a Latin immigrant and growing up surrounded by others of the same Latin American culture has taught me the meaning of family. It was taught me how to fight against the prejudice and ethnic racism, but more importantly, it was taught me to fight in what I believe in and for who I love.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Daniel Angel named new director of Parks and Recreation for Miami Lakes The Town of Miami Lakes announced its Operations Business manager Daniel Angel has been promoted to Director of Parks and Recreation.

The decision was the first appointment made by new Town Manager Edward Pidermann.

Angel, a Miami Lakes resident, has been working for the

Town since 2007 and has worked in local government for 20 years.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and is working towards her certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

He has attained certification as a 3 Code Enforcement Professional.

Entries open for ‘Capture a Miami Lakes Moment’ contest DANIEL ANGEL

The Town of Miami Lakes announced the start of Round 4 in the “Capture a Miami Lakes Moment” photo contest.

Residents are encouraged to show their love for Miami Lakes by taking photos of their favorite place or thing to do in the Town. The winning photographers will be recognized by the Town Council in September and top entry photos will be displayed on the Town’s website.

The contest’s official rules include:

• Photo must be taken within Town boundaries.

• Photos of landscape, buildings, parks and scenery are recommended.

• Photos must be in JPEG format, 300 DPI )dots per inch) and no smaller than 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels high.

Town seeks sponsors and vendors for July 4th event

Sponsorship and vendor registration is now open for the Town of Miami Lakes’ 16th annual Fourth of July Concert and Fireworks Show hosted by the Cultural Affairs Committee on Thursday, July 4.

Last year’s event offered live entertainment, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks presentation for over 10,000 people.

Sponsorship levels begin at

the White level for $500 and go up to $10,000 for Title Sponsor level. Vendor fees are $150.

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during May and early June: For Children and Families: Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. Movies being shown this month are “Moana,” (PG); “Kung Fu Panda” (PG); “Max” (PG),“Ralph Breaks the Internet” (PG) and “Treasure Planet! (PG). Events made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 15, 22, 29 and June 5.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, May 16, 23, 30 and June 6.

Baby and Me Group – A free 10-week series giving parents and caregivers an opportunity to develop close relationships with their infants ages birth to 6 months. This year, the community rallied behind Danny Quesada, a young man with cystic fibrosis, a chronic pulmonary illness that has no cure. Proceeds from the basketball game went to supporting his medical treatments.

“Danny is a fighter and he’s had to be all his life,” said Manny Quesada, Danny’s father.

“He’s a major outdoorsman, he loves to fish, he loves to hunt he’s also a runner so even with his lung illness he was able to run cross country.”

The annual basketball tournament was fun and competitive but it also brought everyone together.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has been honored with the 2019 National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Superintendent of the Year Award during its 48th Annual NABE Conference at Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort.

CONGRESSMAN MARIO DIAZ-BALART (FL-25) recognized Mater Academy Charter High School sophomore Melanie Gonzalez as the 25th Congressional District’s winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition “An Artistic Discovery.” Gonzalez’s painting, titled “Sunkised” (displayed on the wall), was chosen out of 66 entries submitted from 12 participating schools. finals if they can get past their opponents.

Goleman defeated Hialeah Miami Lakes High 16-6 in the opening round of the district playoffs ending the Trojans’ promising season in which they defeated top ranked teams, Varela, 13-2, and Archbishop Carroll, 9-2, to close out the regular season.

American High’s baseball team lost the district title game against Hialeah as the Thoroughbreds defeated the Patriots, 3-2, in the finals of the tournament.

Despite the loss, American advanced to the regionals against an opponent to be announced this week.

Mater Academy, which lost the district title game against Westland Hialeah, 6-0, prepares for a regional quarterfinal game this week against McArthur.

The Mustangs won their district title with a 6-1 victory over Cooper City.

In softball, Monsignor Edward Pace High won the 2018-2019 district champi-

onship last week with a 13-3 victory over Mater Lakes Academy before losing to Gulliver Prep, 15-0, in the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Spartans defeated St. Brendan High School 8-4 in the district semifinals in a tough match up that saw both teams go toe-to-toe before Pace broke the game open.

Mater Academy High’s softball team also won the district championship with a victory over Westland Hialeah before losing to Nova, 9-7, in the regional quarterfinals.

Like Pace and Mater Academy, Barbara Goleman’s softball team won the district championship with a victory over Hialeah Miami Lakes before losing to American Heritage, 15-0, in the regional quarterfinals.

Goleman’s Alyssa Moore wins GMAC Conference badminton singles title

Barbara Goleman High student-athlete Alyssa Moore recently did her school proud by winning the the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) singles championship in badminton.

Her victory marked the third consecutive year the Gators won the GMAC title in the sport under longtime head coach Debbie Perez who guided her players to victory during the GMAC and district competitions.

Badminton is a sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net in which the most common forms of the game are singles with one player per side.

Badminton also includes doubles competition and points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side’s half of the court.

Moore mastered the skills in badminton to win the GMAC championship.

In the other semifinal match, Slam, the #3 seed defeated Miami Springs, the #2 seed, to set up a showdown versus the three-time District Champion Slam and HML. It was a game that could be coined an “ESPN Classic” that went five sets. In an exciting, hard fought game, the Trojans came out as champions. The Trojans volleyball team played one of the best games of their careers and they are the 2019 District 13 Champions.

Holly Nehar, a goalkeeper from Hollywood, Florida, has signed to play women's soccer at St. Thomas University (STU) head coach Michelle Smith announced during a press conference.

Nehar served as the captain at Hollywood Hills High School in the fall of 2018 and has played soccer for 10 years.

Leonie Weide, an outsideback from Gossfelden, Germany, has also signed to play women's soccer at STU. Weide transfers to STU after one season at Broward College where Weide was named to the NJCCA Region-8 Second

Team. Weide played her freshman year at Middle Georgia State University appearing in all 16 games, adding a goal and four assists en route to AllFreshman Team honors in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Weide plans to major in Psychology and enrolls to STU starting in the Fall of 2019.

Three former FIU Panthers will continue their careers hoping for NFL roster spots Three former Panthers joined the NFL following the 2019 draft as they continue their football careers in the NFL with Anthony Johnson, Stone Wilson and CJ Worton all hopefully playing on Sunday afternoons.

Wilson will stay in the 305 as the punter signed with the Dolphins while wideout Worton will head north to join the Falcons. Johnson will stay in the Sunshine State as well as the defensive lineman was extended a Rookie Mini Camp invite with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wilson, FIU's career-leader in punts (203) and punt yards (8,225), will go down as one of the best punters in program history. Wilson's 44.0 average in 2018 was ranked second-highest in program history for a season at FIU while coming in for third in the league. Wilson was named to the All-CUSA Second Team following the 2018 season while also gaining a spot on the Ray Guy Watch List during the year.

Worton played one season with the Panthers after transferring to FIU from Florida. The wideout was a favorite target of James Morgan during the 2018 season as he collected a teamhigh 627 receiving yards and six scores. Worton's best game of the season came against crosstown rival Miami as he hauled in 123 yards on five catches while finding the end zone twice.

Johnson made 12 starts on the FIU defensive line last season as he collected 40 tackles with 6.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks in 2018.

Johnson was a heavy presence in the opposing team's backfield as he also posted a program-record seven quarterback hurries as a senior. The Georgia native was named to the All-CUSA honorable mention Team as well as a senior.

Two STU softball athletes named to All-Academic Team

Miami Lakes resident and St. Thomas University (STU) student-athlete Alexis Castroman was among her teammates who were named to the Sun Conference All-Academic Team for softball.

Joining her were Emily Santos, Nanet Manieri, Dayma Pla, Grethell Santos, McKenna Delaware and Nicole Maribona.

Bobcats outfielder Alliyah Sands took home the top honor as she was named as a FirstTeam All-Conference member for the first time in her college career.

In her senior season the North Carolina native led the Bobcats in batting average (.377), hits (49), runs (30), doubles (12), while she finished second in home runs (1) and RBIs (21).

In addition Sands was selected as The Sun Conference Champion of Character Award winner. Sands, an outstanding student, who not only serves as a resident assistant at STU but is also doing work-study for the athletic department.

Beginning on May 3, a group of 20 PACE students and members of the school’s faculty began 24 hours of fasting and prayer as a way to raise awareness for the many impoverished individuals who go hungry in

their local community and around the world.

While going without food, students prepared sandwiches for local homeless shelters. This is the second year that the event was held at PACE after inheriting the annual tradition from Archbishop Curley Notre Dame, where it took place for 21 years before the school closed its doors in 2017.

The students, PACE staff, faculty, former Archbishop Curley faculty and several local

schools like Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School and St. Bartholomew Catholic School were actively involved in contributing food donations and some even attended the event.

Participants prepared over 2,100 lunches for the homeless.

In addition, a car wash was held for students and staff on May 3 which raised over $1,000 for PACE’s three sister schools in Haiti.

Mater Lakes’ Sophia Torres named Community Service Chair for MDCPS SGA

Mater Lakes Academy (MLA) is proud to have junior Sophia Torres representing their school as the Community Service Chair for MDCPS Student Government. MLA has been an active participation with the SGA of MDCPS. Torres made it her goal to be on the board since she began in SGA. So as a current member of MLA’s SGA, she has the experience needed to be a representative on behalf of MLA. Torres had to go through an application process by submitting a 500 word essay about herself and why she wanted the position. She also had to submit teacher recommendation letters and a resume of all extracurricular activities. Torres stated, “I enjoy helping the community and I love being involved with others to make an impact on someone’s life,” when asked why she ran for the position of Community Service Chair.

On April 11, Torres won Community Service Chair for the 2019-2020 school year after running against another female student. Pace hosts Spartan Alumni Fiesta; two retiring staff members honored

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School (PACE) continued an established tradition with its second annual alumni party on May 4. The theme of this year’s event was Cinco de Mayo and once again the school welcomed five decades of PACE graduates to the festive Spartan Alumni Fiesta.

Two hundred guests gathered in the school’s Spartan Center for an evening of food, cocktails and dancing. The party brought together alumni from 1954 to 2018 and they all enjoyed an evening of fun and nostalgia among former classmates and teachers.

At the start of the evening principal Ana Garcia took a few moments to welcome everyone back to their beloved high school and class of 2006 alumnus Father Bryan Garcia offered the opening prayer for the evening.

45 M. Lakes Educational Center students join major college tour

What is college really like?

The best way to answer that question is to go visit a college campus, to walk through the hallways and classrooms, to talk to current students and faculty.

But, travel is expensive and whose parents can take the time off from work to traverse the country?

Yordanka Mezawi, Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) teacher of the year, started the process of organizing a school trip at the end of last school year. After months of planning, saving, researching and preparing for the cold weather, 45 students and four chaperones met at 4 a.m. in the morning on March 17 at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to begin their college tour of ten schools in five days.

Day one was a whirlwind.

Boston, Massachusetts, historic, lively and cold. MLEC Jaguars spent the beginning of the trip at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was more than a tour, it was personal, two MLEC alumins David Pacheco, class of 2015 and Jonthan Tagoe, class of 2017, spoke to

the team. Not only did they offer a personalized tour of the historic campus, they answered questions and offered advice on everything from the academics to battling home sickness to how to adjust to the cold weather.

“I feel like that was really special. We got an advantage over other people who go on tours with a tour guide, I really liked how we were able to get most of ours done by actual students and students from MLEC that know where we come from,” said junior Chika Ojukwu.

There was still so much left to see, Boston University, the Museum of Science, Faneuil Hall and Harvard University where there is also a current MLEC alumna, Julissa Higgins, class of 2015.

Then, off to Northeastern University, Boston College, Providence College, Brown University and Yale University over the next two days. Luckily, more alumni. At Brown, the team met up with Samantha Cardet, MLEC class of 2014 and discussed financial aid and Brown’s open curriculum.

Next on the itinerary was the city that never sleeps, New York. For many of the students, this was their first visit to “the Big Apple.”

The first stop was New York University where they met with another Jaguar, Lessenitt Campos, class of 2016, now majoring in Sports Management.

“The city looked colossal yet constricted, elegant yet noisy,” said Karla Perez. They toured the sites from Central Park and Times Square to the Majestic Theatre where the group watched a Broadway Show.

“Watching a Broadway play was a once in a lifetime experience that not that many people get to experience. I was blessed to be able to be there,” said sophomore, Mya Young.

“Students were able to visit 10 of the most competitive schools in the country in the span of five and a half days.

Hopefully, it encourages them to apply,” said Mezawi. “We have great, talented, dedicated and motivated students at MLEC and I hope that this trip allows them to see just how many opportunities they have.
