Carta del Comodoro Commodore’s letter

Muy estimados socios: Tuvimos un comienzo de 2020 exitosísimo en actividades, con eventos nunca antes vistos en la historia de nuestro Club, con un barco Punta del Este dando la vuelta al mundo con el gallardete del YCPE y la regata Clipper Race, con participación de tripulantes de nuestro Club.

También el nuevo formato de la regata Atlántico Sur Rolex realizado conjuntamente con el Yacht Club Argentino fue un éxito, reconocido por las autoridades de Rolex Ginebra como el del más alto nivel en Latinoamérica, en el cual nuestro Club da todo el apoyo logístico a través de la Comisión de Regatas, Varadero, Escuela de vela, etc., a quienes les agradezco su valiosa colaboración. La Entrega de Premios fue un evento fantástico realizado en nuestro jardín. Además realizamos dos Sudamericanos: uno de la clase Soling y otro de la clase J70, con importante participación internacional. En total se organizaron más de 130 regatas el pasado año.

Tuvimos asimismo una gran actividad cultural y social, con numerosas conferencias de destacados expositores y múltiples vernissages de renombrados pintores.

El Club tuvo el honor de ser seleccionado por el International Council of Yacht Clubs –entidad que integran los mejores yacht clubs del mundo– como primer yacht club en Sudamérica en integrarse.

Fuimos patrocinados por el Real Club Náutico de Barcelona y el Clube Naval de Cascais, de Portugal.

Lamentablemente en marzo de 2020 se detecta la pandemia del Covid-19 en Uruguay y las autoridades decretaron un cese de actividades.

La regata Clipper Race postergó la misma, quedando la flota en Filipinas y el Club permaneció sin actividades hasta el 1º de julio. A partir de esa fecha comenzamos las actividades en forma paulatina y cumpliendo todos los protocolos sanitarios establecidos por las autoridades.

En este contexto Rolex decidió saltear la edición 2021 de la regata, en virtud de que dada la jerarquía lograda en el año pasado con la misma, tendría que –debido a los protocolos– limitar el nivel de excelencia alcanzado, y sería más positivo volver a realizarlo el próximo año manteniendo el nivel logrado anteriormente. Teniendo estas consideraciones el Yacht Club Argentino y el YCPE hicieron un aviso de regata conjunto para mantener vigente el circuito, realizando simultáneamente regatas en Buenos Aires y en Punta del Este. Nuestra Comisión de Regatas espera este año realizar aproximadamente 100 regatas con los protocolos requeridos.

La Sede Social mantiene su restorán abierto con óptima atención para los socios, teniendo terraza en el primer piso y también en la planta baja, ambas al aire libre para mayor prevención de sus asociados.

Mucho agradezco toda la cooperación de la Comisión Directiva y de las distintas Comisiones, así como de todo el personal de nuestro Club que ha tenido un comportamiento de lealtad y capacidad encomiables.

Un afectuoso saludo a todos los socios, con el deseo que el 2021 traiga mejores vientos que el 2020.

Dear members: We had a very successful start to 2020 in activities, with unprecedented events in the history of our Club, and a Punta del Este boat which travelled around the world with the YCPE pennant and the Clipper Race regatta, with the participation of our Club’s crew.

Also, the new format of the Rolex South Atlantic regatta carried out jointly with the Argentine Yacht Club was a great success, recognized by the Rolex Geneva authorities as the highest-level regatta in Latin America, in which our Club provides all logistical support through the Race Committee, Boatyard, Sailing School, etc., to whom I thank for their valuable collaboration. The Awards Ceremony was a fantastic event held in our garden.

We also organized two South American regattas: one for the Soling class and the other for the J70 class, with significant international participation. In total, more than 130 regattas were organized last year.

We also had a great amount of cultural and social activities, with numerous conferences by prominent exhibitors and multiple vernissages by renowned painters.

The Club had the honor of being selected by the International Council of Yacht Clubs - an entity that brings together the best yacht clubs in the world – and we were the first yacht club in South America to join. We were sponsored by the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona and the Clube Naval de Cascais, from Portugal.

Unfortunately, in March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic was detected in Uruguay and the authorities decreed a cessation of activities. The Clipper Race regatta was

postponed, the fleet stayed in the Philippines and the Club remained without activities until July 1st. From that date on, we gradually resumed activities, complying with all the health protocols established by the authorities.

In this context, Rolex decided to skip the 2021 edition of the regatta, because after the hierarchy achieved last year, it would have to limit the level of excellence achieved – due to protocols - and it would be better to do it next year maintaining the level previously achieved.

Taking these considerations into account, the Yacht Club Argentino and the YCPE made a joint regatta notice to keep the circuit in force, simultaneously holding regattas in Buenos Aires and in Punta del Este. This year, our Race Committee expects to carry out approximately 100 regattas with the required protocols.

The Headquarters maintains its restaurant open with excellent attention for members and has a terrace on the first floor and on the ground floor, both outdoors to maintain proper distance following the health recommendations.

I am very grateful for all the cooperation of the Board of Directors and the diffferent Commissions, as well as all the staff of our Club who have had a behavior of laudable loyalty and skills.

ersonas y empresas de todo el mundo han debido adaptarse a la impensable situación que generó el Corona Virus (Covid-19), cambiando realidades y rutinas casi en cada rincón del planeta.

Pero –como siempre– en toda crisis hay oportunidades y esta es una de ellas.

Al inicio de la pandemia, Uruguay pudo contener el explosivo crecimiento de casos que se daba en todos los países

afectados, hecho que llamó la atención a personas que buscan tranquilidad y menor riesgo de contagios. También las empresas lo notaron y comenzaron a analizar las posibilidades para invertir en el país y seguir creciendo en un marco de tranquilidad y mayor bienestar.

Punta del Este, the new destination to live and invest This 2020 and its sadly notorious Covid-19 virus marked a before and after in human history. But also, a promising new reality for our beloved city

People and companies around the world have had to adapt to the unthinkable situation brought about by Corona Virus (Covid-19), changing realities and routines almost in every corner of the planet. But –as always– in every crisis there are opportunities, and this is one of them.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Uruguay was able to contain the explosive growth of cases that occurred in all the affected countries, a fact that drew the attention of people seeking tranquility and a lower risk of contagion. Companies also noticed it and began to analyze the possibilities of investing in this country and continue growing in a framework of tranquility and greater well-being.

Although currently the numbers of positive cases of Covid-19 in Uruguay present a significant growth, the characteristics of our country (stability, safety, freedom and quality of life) invite thousands of people to think about the opportunity to make a change and settle here, especially in Punta del Este. The same happens with companies, who analyze the chance of investing and generating good business.

ENRIQUE ANTÍA INTENDENTE DE MALDONADO

1. ¿Qué tiene Uruguay en general y Punta del Este en particular para destacarse como destino de vida e inversión?

Uruguay se destaca históricamente como un país que ha recibido migrantes así como inversiones.

Son varias las razones que hacen de nuestro país un destino interesante. En primer lugar la calidad de su gente, algo reconocido. Tanto por su amabilidad como por su educación. En segundo lugar pero asociado con lo primero: la solidez de sus instituciones. Una Justicia verdaderamente independiente y un gran respeto del ordenamiento jurídico. Un sistema político moderado y estable que garantiza que no haya lugar a enfrentamientos sociales. En tercer lugar diría que tenemos excelentes servicios de salud y de educación.

En Punta del Este en particular, le sumamos a lo anterior la seguridad pública que –entre otras cosas– provee un moderno centro de video vigilancia. Estamos en medio de un proceso pandémico que aún no sabemos qué coletazos puede llegar a tener.

Vemos un fuerte crecimiento en las consultas y sabemos de muchas personas que han tomado la decisión de radicarse en el Uruguay y de muchas otras que lo están evaluando firmemente. Y así como personas también empresas. Aquello de la filosofía oriental de que “crisis significa oportunidad” pareciera estarse reflejando en estos lares.

4. ¿Qué habría que tener en cuenta para hacerlo con éxito?

Debemos trabajar como país en mejorar aspectos relativos a la competitividad de las empresas, pero en lo relativo al ecosistema en el que éstas se desarrollan ofrecemos un diferencial muy positivo.

5. Si tuviera que describir a Punta del Este con tres palabras ¿cuáles serían?

Hermosa, pujante, segura.

recognized. Both for their kindness and for their education. Second, but related with the first one: the strength of its institutions.

A truly independent Justice and great respect for the legal system. A moderate and stable political system that guarantees that there is no room for social confrontations. Third, I would say that we have excellent health and education services.

In Punta del Este in particular, as well as the abovementioned strengths, we also have a great public security that –among other things– provides a modern video surveillance center. In addition to an enjoyable, clean, orderly and world-class environment. A planned city, with a privileged and protected coastline. A garden city like few in the world. A wide recreational and cultural offering that meets the needs and expectations of our visitors. A place to live!

2. Besides being an interesting destination for people, do you also consider it is great for companies?

Why? Yes, without a doubt. Particularly for those where trained human resources are crucial to their action. Those companies where the creative capacity of their workers makes them different. At Maldonado we offer an environment that accompanies the desire to grow.

We have first class infrastructure. Airport, port. Montevideo is just over an hour away, excellent communications –with the highest connection speeds in Latin America–, qualified human resources, both university and workers, a wide range of financial and banking services, among other essential infrastructures for business operation.

3. Do you think there is an opportunity to generate significant growth?

We are in the midst of a pandemic process that we still do not know how hard it will hit.

We see strong growth in consultations and we know of many people who have made the decision to settle in Uruguay and many others who are seriously evaluating it. And as well as people, also companies. That saying of the Eastern philosophy that states that “crisis means opportunity” seems to be reflected today in these parts of the world.

4. What things should be considered in order to do it successfully?

As a country, we must work to improve aspects related to the competitiveness of companies, but in relation to the ecosystem in which they develop, we offer a very positive differential.

5. If you had to describe Punta del Este in three words, what would they be?

Beautiful, vigorous, safe.

1. ¿Qué tiene Uruguay en general y Punta del Este en particular para destacarse como destino de vida e inversión?

De Uruguay destaco varios aspectos positivos: la seguridad jurídica, la previsibilidad y la tranquilidad con la que se puede vivir. Para Punta del Este, además, le agregaría su belleza, estilo y personalidad propia. En este sentido, la inversión y el ahorro de largo plazo son ideas que cobran especial sentido.

2. Además de ser un destino interesante para las personas ¿considera lo mismo para las empresas? ¿Por qué?

Me cuesta más imaginarlo, aunque podría ser un buen lugar para industrias perfiladas para la exportación y, por qué no, para los servicios tecnológicos u otros intangibles de alto valor agregado.

3. ¿Cree que se está ante una oportunidad de generar un crecimiento importante?

Sí, en general para el Uruguay, en la medida en que se sigan promoviendo y consolidando las condiciones competitivas y reglas claras. Por ejemplo, en el sector al que pertenezco, las posibilidades para crecer son enormes y Uruguay tiene mucho para crecer, especialmente en los seguros para personas.

4. ¿Qué habría que tener en cuenta para hacerlo con éxito?

Insisto con la previsibilidad, no cambiar las reglas de juego por aparentes conveniencias cortoplacistas, que contribuyan para construir verdaderas ventajas competitivas y sustentables.

5. Si tuviera que describir a Punta del Este con tres palabras ¿cuáles serían?

Punta del Este es “calidad de vida”.

I highlight several positive aspects of Uruguay: legal security, predictability and the tranquility with which you can live. For Punta del Este, in addition, it would add its own beauty, style and personality. In this sense, long-term investment and saving are concepts that really make sense.

2. Besides being an interesting destination for people, do you also consider it is great for companies?

Why? I find it hard to imagine it, although it could be a good place for export industries and, why not, for technological services or other high value-added intangibles.

3. Do you think there is an opportunity to generate significant growth?

Yes, in general for Uruguay, as long as competitive conditions and clear rules continue to be promoted and consolidated.

For example, in the sector to which I belong, the possibilities for growth are huge and Uruguay has a lot to grow, especially in personal insurance.

4. What things should be considered in order to do it successfully?

I insist on predictability, not changing the rules of the game for apparent shortterm conveniences, which contribute to building true competitive and sustainable advantages.

5. If you had to describe Punta del Este in three words, what would they be?

Punta del Este is “quality of life”.

1. ¿Qué tiene Uruguay en general y Punta del Este en particular para destacarse como destino de vida e inversión?

Su naturaleza, estar rodeada de ríos, mares, arenas y sierras. Estupendos restaurantes, bares, simpáticas cafeterías y almacenes orgánicos. Galerías de arte con destacados artistas de nivel internacional. Bodegas y olivos con vinos y aceites de muy buena calidad. Y por supuesto, su excelente puerto, sede de grandes regatas mundiales.

2. Además de ser un destino interesante para las personas ¿considera lo mismo para las empresas? ¿Por qué?

Sí, absolutamente. Cada vez más las medidas implementadas por nuestro presidente Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou incentivan la inversión en nuestro país, por ejemplo a través de la residencia fiscal. Además Uruguay cuenta con una Ley de Zonas Francas y una buena seguridad jurídica.

3. ¿Cree que se está ante una oportunidad de generar un crecimiento importante?

Sí, hay un crecimiento exponencial año a año; la construcción está en un momento de mucho auge y el campo uruguayo está cada vez más industrializado.

4. ¿Qué habría que tener en cuenta para hacerlo con éxito?

Capacitar a la población creando planes educativos –tanto en idiomas como en informática– acordes a esta nueva era. También es muy importante que las rutas de nuestro país estén en buen estado para que la conectividad sea la mejor.

5. Si tuviera que describir a Punta del Este con tres palabras ¿cuáles serían?

Paraíso, paraíso, paraíso.

1. What does Uruguay have in general and Punta del Este in particular, that allows them to outstand as a destination for life and investment?

Its nature, being surrounded by rivers, seas, sands, and mountains. Great restaurants, bars, cute cafes and organic warehouses.

Art galleries with outstanding international artists. Wineries and olive trees with very good quality wines and oils. And of course, its excellent port, home to great world regattas.

2. Besides being an interesting destination for people, do you also consider it is great for companies?

Why? Yes, absolutely. The measures implemented by our president Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou are increasingly encouraging investment in our country, for example through tax residence.

In addition, Uruguay has a Free Zones Law and good legal security.

3. Do you think there is an opportunity to generate significant growth?

Yes, there is an exponential growth year after year; the construction is at a time of great boom and the Uruguayan countryside is increasingly industrialized.

4. What things should be considered in order to do it successfully?

To train the people by creating educational plans –both in languages ​​and informatics– according to this new era. It is also very important that our country’s routes are in good condition so that connectivity is the best.

5. If you had to describe Punta del Este in three words, what would they be?

Paradise, paradise, paradise.

ALEJANDRA COVELLO ARGENTINA

1. ¿Qué tiene Uruguay en general y Punta del Este en particular para destacarse como destino de vida e inversión?

Punta del Este se ha convertido este año en una gran ciudad resort con la llegada de 30.000 habitantes extranjeros al departamento de Maldonado, que ya no solo la visitan como balneario sino que han adquirido propiedades para todo el año en los edificios de categoría que abundan en la ciudad y cuentan con todos los servicios y amenities difíciles de encontrar con este nivel de atención personal como en Punta del Este. La confiabilidad de su sistema notarial lo hace también distinguirse.

2. Además de ser un destino interesante para las personas ¿considera lo mismo para las empresas? ¿Por qué?

Para las empresas, el hecho de haber disminuido el monto de inversión para fomentar la relocación de las mismas a través de la normativa de exoneración impositiva también lo hace atractivo. Para que esto suceda deben existir además facilidades para el ingreso de inversiones en medicina y transporte, hoy muy expuestos a la luz de la pandemia del Covid 19.

3. ¿Cree que se está ante una oportunidad de generar un crecimiento importante?

Uruguay tiene hoy la oportunidad histórica de convertirse en un país de inversiones.

Dadas las condiciones políticas de la región, hoy con el gobierno del Dr. Luis Lacalle Pou la visualización positiva de los extranjeros a Uruguay se ha consolidado notablemente. Las medidas que surgen de la LUC (Ley de Urgente Consideración) para fomentar la inversión tanto en real estate como en la relocación de empresas convalidan esta mirada.

4. ¿Qué habría que tener en cuenta para hacerlo con éxito?

Para lograr el crecimiento con éxito sería importantísimo tener en cuenta estos dos últimos dos factores sumados a la educación descentralizada de Montevideo.

5. Si tuviera que describir a Punta del Este con tres palabras ¿cuáles serían?

Calidad de vida, ciudad resort y construcciones de primer nivel; dentro de un contexto de geografía natural, rica y diversa.

Quality of life, resort city, top-level buildings; within a context of natural, rich and diverse geography.

Nació en Maldonado y es Licenciada en Ciencias de la Comunicación por la Universidad de la República. Durante sus primeros años de estudio en Montevideo desarrolló su lado fotográfico. “The places I usually go to, because of their proximity and magic, are Arroyo Maldonado (in Barra de Maldonado) for its peace and tranquility, a few kilometers away from the capital of the department. Another place I really like to go for its sunsets and as a place to finish the day is Mansa Beach, at Muelle La Pastora or Muelle de Mailhos. They are unique places. ¿Cómo nace su vínculo con el agua y con Punta del Este?

Los dos son muy antiguos: con el mar es prácticamente antes de nacer porque mi abuelo era marino de guerra, mi tío era marino de guerra y yo fui marino de guerra. Hice los seis años de Escuela Naval, terminando con un viaje de instrucción en la fragata Libertad. Mi vínculo con Punta del Este (PDE) comienza después que me casé; no dejamos de venir ni un solo año. Siempre vinimos con nuestros hijos, luego con nuestros nietos, así que es nuestro segundo hogar.

También vengo con amigos, fundamentalmente en el barco. Tenemos muchas vivencias así que para nosotros PDE es algo que forma parte de nuestra vida. ¿Cuándo se mudaron a vivir aquí?

En junio de 2020, aunque seguramente volveremos a Buenos Aires a visitar a nuestros hijos y nietos que están allá, pero el foco va a estar sin duda acá. Estamos encantados con la calidad de vida en PDE, que es diferente a la del verano. Hay momentos del verano que te agobian, pero ahora no.

Esto es exactamente el polo opuesto y la calidad de vida es óptima. Es una paz permanente, hay seguridad, la gente es muy amable y educada y eso hoy tiene un valor enorme.

¿Cuánto tiempo lleva como socio del YCPE? El otro día tuve una reunión en el Club, salió el tema, me preguntaron y dije “hace como 15 o 16 años que soy

socio”. Llamé a Secretaría ¡y resultaron ser 23 años! (Risas) ¿Desde cuándo tiene barco?

Desde los años ’80. Este (el Cahuimpi) es mi segundo barco oceánico; lo tengo desde hace 10 años. El anterior era un Victory 49. También tengo el Mero II. ¿Siempre lo trae a Punta del Este?

Si si, siempre. Venimos y volvemos en el barco, es más, a veces en vez de volver a Buenos Aires nos vamos directo a Mar del Plata.

No se lo manda traer entonces… (risas) ¡No! ¡Acá la pasión es genuina! (Ríe). Es algo genético, va conmigo. Además es un lindo programa para hacer con amigos. Tengo un grupo que siempre está a la espera de que los llame… ¡dejan todo y salen corriendo a embarcarse! ¿Qué experiencias de navegación nos puede contar?

Corrimos muchas regatas de Buenos Aires a PDE. El cruce a Mar de Plata es muy lindo; obviamente hay momentos en que te enfrentás con tormentas que son desafíos grandes –enormes muchas veces– y no la pasas tan bien, pero ni bien llega el primer día relativamente bueno uno olvida todo y empieza a disfrutar nuevamente.

Las tormentas son parte de la vida náutica y hay que saber enfrentarlas. ¡Nunca desafiarlas! Pero luego sentís la satisfacción de haberlas superado

A PASSION FOR THE SEA Experienced, low profile and with utmost kindness, Jorge Ferioli welcomed us on his Cahuimpi sailboat to share a talk about his passions: the sea, cars and Punta del Este Where did your link with the sea and Punta del Este begin?

Both links are very old: with the sea it virtually started before birth because my grandfather was a military sailor, my uncle was a military sailor, and I was a military sailor. I attended the Naval Academy, and after six years, it ended with an instructional trip on the frigate Libertad. My relationship with Punta del Este (PDE) began after I got married; we came here every single year. We always came with our children, then with our grandchildren, so it’s our second home. I also come with friends, mainly on the boat. We have lived many experiences here, so for us PDE is part of our lives.

When did you move here?

In June 2020, although we will surely return to Buenos Aires to visit our children and grandchildren who live there, but the focus will undoubtedly be here. We are fascinated with the quality of life at PDE, which is quite different in winter and in summer. There are moments of the summer that overwhelm you, but not now. This is exactly the opposite

Por eso soy un fanático de los Optimist, porque ahí desde muy chiquito aprendés que tenés que ser responsable porque tu seguridad depende básicamente de vos, lo podés disfrutar o podés tener un problema. El mar nos vuelve a todos primero responsables, luego solidarios, por-

que en un barco todos dependemos uno de otro, principalmente en los momentos difíciles. Se forma un equipo que cuanto mayor es la adversidad más unido debe estar y se convierte en un grupo que disfruta de trabajar juntos con mucha responsabilidad y respeto, pero también con una gran solidaridad, cualidades que se aplican en todos los órdenes de la vida. ¿Qué nos puede contar de sus regatas en Europa?

Corrí varias, recuerdo una en los festejos de los 500 años del Descubrimiento de América. En 1992 me invitaron a correr en la fragata Libertad. Viajé a

For how long have you been member of the YCPE? Some days ago, I had a meeting at the Club, and this question came up, they asked me and I said “I’ve been a member for around 15 or 16 years.” I called the secretary’s office and it turned out to be 23 years! (Laughs) Since when do you have a boat?

Since the 80s. This one (the Cahuimpi) is my second ocean boat; I’ve had it for 10 years.

The previous one was a Victory 49. I also have the Mero II.

Cádiz; fue muy linda. Ese año también estuve embarcado en el Fortuna I. Son momentos muy particulares, muy agradables. No te los olvidás nunca.

Do you always bring it to Punta del Este?

Yes, always. We come and go on the boat, and sometimes instead of going back to Buenos Aires we go straight to Mar del Plata.

¿Y con sus barcos?

Acá ganamos algún segundo y tercer puesto con el Cheers y con el Cahuimpi, pero no son barcos de “regata regata”.

So, you don’t have it brought for you… (laughs) No! The passion is genuine! (laughs). It’s in my genes, it goes with me. It is also a nice thing to do with friends. I have a group that is always waiting for me to call them ... they leave everything and run to board!

¿Tiene tripulación fija?

En estos dos si, somos todos amigos.

Tell us about your sailing experiences…

We have run many regattas from Buenos Aires to PDE. The crossing to Mar de Plata is very

solidary, because on a ship we all depend on each other, especially in difficult times.

When it comes to the teams, the greater the adversity, the more united it should be and it becomes a group that enjoys working together with great responsibility and respect, but also with great solidarity, qualities that apply in all aspects of life.

What can you tell us about regattas in Europe?

I ran several, I remember one in the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Discovery of America. In 1992 I was invited to race on the Libertad frigate. I traveled to Cádiz; it was very nice. That same year I was also on the Fortuna I. These are very special moments, very pleasant. You never forget them.

And with your boats?

Here we won second and third places with Cheers and Cahuimpi, but they are not “regatta regatta” boats.

Do you have a permanent crew?

In these two yes, we are all friends. In the case of the Mero II we had a crew with professionals, and another one with friends, but in the Mero II there are only six crew members. In this one, between eight and ten. Let’s say that for a normal regatta, a crew of eight people is fine.

If it’s a long regatta, ten.

What can you tell us about Mero II? It is a 30-foot English Cutter that belonged to Commodore Juan Gorlero, which today gives us the great pleasure of sailing on a ship that is over 100 years old!

Sí, tuvo tres procesos de restauración entre el anterior dueño y yo. Ahora está realmente muy bien, tenemos que disfrutarlo. Acá venimos habitualmente a las regatas de clásicos y el año pasado estuvimos participando en regatas en Mónaco y en Cannes.

nice; Obviously, there are times when you face storms which pose great challenges – sometimes huge challenges - and you don’t have such a good time, but as soon as the first relatively good day arrives you forget everything and start enjoying it again. Storms are part of nautical life and you must know how to deal with them. Never challenge them! But then you feel the satisfaction of having overcome them because they demand everything from you; something that navigation trains you to do. Life on board is very attractive, you don’t have a minute to get bored, especially in regattas!

Do you think that sailing shapes people?

Absolutely! It is a school of life. That is why I am a fan of Optimist, because from a very young age you learn that you have to be responsible because your safety depends basically on you, you can enjoy it or you can have a problem.

And I guess you had to restore it…

Yes, it had three different restoration processes between the previous owner and me. Now it’s really very good, we must really enjoy it.

Here we usually come to classic regattas and last year we were participating in regattas in Monaco and Cannes.

Daniel Sielecki told us that collectors are like “landlords” of works of art: they “rent” them to preserve them for humanity.

Exactly, I agree. The concept is the same, in the sense that what you do is preserve for future generations something that is a world heritage that might otherwise be lost. A boat or car for example, are works of art in motion. And the collecting process is interesting because first it excites you, then it awakens passion and then a commitment is created.

Once you find something that interests you, you want to restore it, which requires feeling a lot of passion because the processes are long and you have to put a lot of effort, find all the information and have resources, time and patience. Then, when it is restored, one

Exactamente, yo también pienso así.

El concepto es el mismo, en el sentido de que uno lo que hace es preservar para futuras generaciones algo que es un patrimonio mundial que de otra forma podría perderse. Un barco o auto por ejemplo, son obras de arte en movimiento. Y el proceso de coleccionismo es interesante porque primero te entusiasma, después despierta pasión y luego se crea un compromiso.

Una vez que encontrás algo que te interesa lo querés restaurar, lo que requiere sentir mucha pasión porque los procesos son largos y hay que dedicarle mucho esfuerzo, buscar toda la información y disponer recursos, tiempo y paciencia. Después cuando ya está restaurado uno tiene que mantenerlo y ese es el gran compromiso.

Hablemos de su otra pasión: los autos. ¿Cómo surge?

De chiquito, un amigo de mi familia que vivía cerca de casa tenía un auto sport y yo iba al autódromo junto con mi padre a ayudarlo en las carreras; era muy chico así que no lo podía ayudar mucho. Tendría 8 ó 9 años pero estaba enamorado del auto… Muchos años

Which are your favorite types of cars?

Race cars and Sport cars.

Let’s talk about your other passion: cars.

How did it start?

When I was a child, a friend of my family who lived very close to us, had a sports car and I went to the racetrack with my father to help him in the races; I was very young so I couldn’t help him much. I was 8 or 9 years old, but I was in love with the car… Many years later – life’s twists and turns - I was interested in finding out where it was: they had bought it and it was in Monaco. We called the person who had it and he said, “no, no, I’m not selling it.”

What type of race cars?

Formula cars. Most of the cars I own are like this, but unfortunately now I am a little far away from them because it is difficult to bring them here, they are all in Buenos Aires.

And what car was it?

An Allard-Cadillac. And the man told me “I’m not selling it, I love the car”, to which I replied, “If you change your mind, call me”, but he never did.

One day, I was about to run the Mil Millas race in Bariloche, there were 170 cars, 340 people, perhaps a total of 400 people who were all going to have dinner together. So, I sat at a random table and the one next to me –a friend who is currently here in Punta del Este– told me “Look, I bought a car, it’s in a garage near Marseille, which is an old mill and right next to my car is the Allard-Cadillac that raced in Buenos Aires”. “But what is it doing there?” I asked. “It’s for sale”, my friend replied. I have never bought a car so quickly! And that’s how my dream as a boy came true. You can see that it was meant to be mine because if he wouldn’t have told me about it or if I simply hadn’t sat next to him ... (laughs)

Do you own Formula 1 cars?

Yes, I have a Lola from 1962, it is fantastic. I raced with it in Monaco. It has a 234 HP eight-cylinder Coventry Climax engine. It weighs about 600 kilos and is one of the last cars that don’t have aerodynamic help, it’s fantastic. I also have a 1980 Williams –which Carlos Reutemann piloted– and a 1956 Maserati 350F, a “great car” driven by another Argentine driver, Froilán González.

And Sport cars?

One of my favorite ones is a Maserati 200 which is a true sculpture. I like cars associated with speed; I can’t imagine a static car. Cars must be used and enjoyed and if they break, they break… but one has to enjoy them because –in addition– I think the car likes it! (laughs) Even though this might sound utterly utopian, can you imagine an F1 Grand Prix in Punta del Este?

I believe it’s possible. There is already a history of formula cars here, racing in the city in the ‘80s.

Formula 2 Codasur, South American Formula 3 and recently Formula E. However, F1 has greater requirements such as the length and quality of

Entonces me siento en una mesa cualquiera y el que está al lado mío –un amigo que justamente está acá en Punta del Este– me comenta “Mirá, me compré tal auto, está en un garaje cerca de Marsella, que es un viejo molino y justamente al lado de mi auto está el Allard-Cadillac que corria en Buenos Aires”. “¿Pero qué hace ahí?” pregunté. “Está en venta” respondió mi amigo. ¡Nunca compré un auto tan rápidamente! Y así es como lo que era mi sueño de chico se hizo realidad. Se ve que estaba destinado que fuera mío porque si él no me lo comenta o si no me siento a su lado… (risas) ¿Qué tipo de autos son los que más le gustan?

Los autos de carrera y autos Sport.

De carrera ¿pero de qué tipo?

De Fórmula. La mayoría de los coches que yo tengo son así, lamentablemente ahora estoy un poco más alejado de ellos porque es difícil traerlos acá, están todos en Buenos Aires. ¿Tiene autos de Fórmula 1?

Sí, tengo un Lola de 1962, es maravilloso. Corrí con él en Mónaco. Tiene un

motor Coventry Climax de ocho cilindros y 234 HP. Pesa unos 600 kilos y es de los últimos coches que no tienen ayuda aerodinámica, es un tubo. También tengo un Williams de 1980 –que piloteó Carlos Reutemann– y un Maserati 350F de 1956, un “cochazo” que manejó otro piloto argentino, Froilán González. ¿Y autos Sport?

Uno de mis preferidos es una Maserati 200 que es una verdadera escultura.

Me gustan los autos asociados a la velocidad, no me imagino un auto estático. Los autos son para andar y disfrutarlos y si se rompen se rompen… pero uno tiene que disfrutarlos porque –además– ¡yo creo que al auto le gusta! (Risas) Por más utópico que suene ¿imagina un Gran Premio de F1 en Punta del Este?

Creo que es posible. Acá ya hay historia de coches de fórmula corriendo en la ciudad en los años ’80. Fórmula 2 Codasur, Fórmula 3 Sudamericana y recientemente la Fórmula E. Ahora bien, la F1 tiene requerimientos mayores como la longitud y calidad de la pista, excelentes boxes, elementos de seguridad especialmente siendo un circuito callejero, etc. ¿Algo como un mini Mónaco?

Totalmente, eso sería lo lindo. Pero obviamente habría que hacerlo fuera de la temporada de verano, sería imposible si no. Lo bueno es que le daría un gran empuje al turismo. Está claro que el desafío sería muy grande, pero –como todas las cosas de la vida– hay que intentarlo. Yo sueño con que un día se pueda hacer; nada es imposible.

¿Cómo ve a Punta del Este ante la “nueva normalidad” y esta inmigración en la que hay mucha gente pensando en venir a vivir e invertir? ¿Es una oportunidad para Punta del Este?

Las nuevas normalidades surgen como consecuencia de una anormalidad previa y en este momento Punta del Este particularmente está rodeada de anormalidades que se pueden transformar en normalidades virtuosas. Siempre la imaginamos como un lugar de veraneo; hoy estamos descubriendo que puede ser un lugar de residencia y ese es el salto que puede tener y que generará una serie de demandas que redundarían en un crecimiento importante.

Frente a eso lo que se vuelve fundamental es que ese crecimiento potencial –que esperemos se transforme en algo real– esté cuidadosamente planificado de manera que su desarrollo sea ordenado e inteligente. Tendría que ser una obsesión mantener el ADN de Punta del Este, su charm que la hace tan particular, tan distintiva. Como toda oportunidad, tiene también sus desafíos: puede ser virtuosa si se la conduce bien, de lo contrario se puede transformar en un problema. the track, excellent boxes, safety elements, especially being a street circuit, etc.

Something like a mini Mónaco?

Exactly, that would be nice. But it obviously should be held outside the summer season, if not, it would be impossible. The good thing is that it would give a great boost to tourism. It is clear that the challenge would be huge, but –like all things in life– you have to try. I dream that one day it can be done; nothing is impossible.

How do you see Punta del Este considering the “new normal” and this immigration in which many people are thinking of coming to live here and invest? Is it an opportunity for Punta del Este?

The new normal arises as a consequence of a previous abnormality and at this moment Punta del Este is particularly surrounded by abnormalities that can be transformed into virtuous normalities.

We always imagine it as a summer place; Today we are discovering that it can be a place of residence and that is the leap that it can take and that will generate a series of demands that would result in significant growth. In view of this, what becomes essential is that this potential growth - which we hope will become something real - is carefully planned so that its development is orderly and intelligent. But the DNA of Punta del Este should be carefully maintained, its charm which makes it so particular, so distinctive.

Like any opportunity, it also has its challenges: it can be virtuous if handled well, otherwise, it can become a problem.

ANÉCDOTAS

I. Haciendo historia en el Atlántico Norte En 1966 estábamos en Halifax, Nueva Escocia (Canadá) en el viaje de instrucción en la Fragata Libertad próximos a la zarpada para cruzar el Atlántico rumbo a Europa. Honrando la gran tradición marinera de esa región, las autoridades le pidieron al Comandante que vea la posibilidad de zarpar a vela, es decir sin motor. ¡Y ese día tuvimos la suerte que había una brisa favorable que nos permitió comenzar a navegar nada más que a vela, con cuchillas y trinquetillas! Allí estaba el barco Bluenose II, sucesor del famoso Bluenose I, un ballenero canadiense tan rápido y famoso que está acuñado en las monedas de 10 centavos canadienses. (N. de R.: el Bluenose II es el actual Embajador Náutico de Nueva Escocia, conózcalo en bluenose.novascotia.ca). Empezamos a navegar, pasamos frente a los buques de guerra canadiense y americanos amarrados en el puerto, el Bluenose II nos seguía atrás. Salimos a mar abierto y estuvimos navegando un día con poco viento, pasamos por Cape Race y ahí nos alcanzó un centro de baja presión con muchísimo viento, con rachas de hasta 50 nudos ¡y nosotros con todas las velas desplegadas! Navegábamos a 17 Nudos y 25º de escora. Rifamos varias velas, la vida a bordo era durísima, vivíamos permanentemente escorados, se caía todo, no podías comer… pero era fascinante ver esa lucha contra el mar embravecido y la manera que se comportaba la fragata.

Pasó ese centro de baja presión y el Comandante manda a cambiar todas las velas rifadas y reparar a cabuyería que se había roto. Navegando con rumbo a la isla Dursey, Irlanda, ¡nos alcanza otro centro de baja presión! Nuevamente fuertes vientos de popa y excelente velocidad hicieron que finalmente completáramos el cruce del Atlántico Norte al sur de la isla de Dursey en 6 días y 21 horas. Amarramos en el puerto de Dublín y allí ya se hablaba de que el tiempo que habíamos hecho era muy bueno, pero antes de zarpar de Dublín le avisan al Comandante que ¡habíamos batido el récord del cruce del Atlántico a vela! Fue impresionante. Cuando estuvimos en Londres también lo confirmaron y a partir de ahí en todas nuestras entradas a puerto la gente hacía colas y colas para poder visitar el barco.

ANECDOTES

I. MAKING HISTORY IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC In 1966 we were in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) on the instructional trip in the frigate Libertad, just before the set sail to cross the Atlantic heading to Europe. Honoring the great seafaring tradition of that region, the authorities asked the Commander to look into the possibility of setting sail without an engine.

And that day we were lucky that there was a favorable breeze that allowed us to start sailing with nothing but sail, with blades and staysails!

There was the ship Bluenose II, successor to the famous Bluenose I, a Canadian whaling ship so fast and famous that it is coined in Canadian dimes. (Editor’s note: Bluenose II is the current Sailing Ambassador of Nova Scotia, learn about it at bluenose.novascotia. ca). We began to sail, we passed in front of the Canadian and American warships moored in the port, the Bluenose II following behind us.

We went out to the open sea and were sailing one day with little wind, we passed Cape Race and there we reached a low-pressure center with a lot of wind, with gusts of up to 50 knots and we had all the sails unfolded! We were sailing at 17 knots and 25º of heel. The wind blew out several sails, life on board was very hard, we lived permanently heeled, everything fell, you could not eat ... but it was fascinating to see that fight against the rough sea and the way the frigate behaved.

After we passed the low-pressure center, the Commander had all the broken sails changed and the cables that had been broken were repaired. Sailing to Dursey Island, Ireland, another low-pressure center hit us! Once again, strong stern winds and excellent speed made us finally complete the crossing from the North Atlantic to the south of Dursey Island in 6 days and 21 hours. We moored in the port of Dublin and there was already talk that the time we had done was very good, but before setting sail from Dublin the Commander was told that we had broken the record for crossing the Atlantic by sail! It was impressive. When we were in London, they also confirmed it and from then on at all our port entrances people queued to visit the ship.

II. Una sorpresa tras otra Otra anécdota del viaje de instrucción fue tan simpática como inesperada: estando en Halifax, salí con un grupo de tres amigos y caminando por la ciudad se me ocurre decir que quería conocer una granja canadiense, para ver cómo eran. “Déjate de embromar” dijeron mis amigos, pero siendo como soy insistí tanto que al rato estábamos averiguando en una oficina de turismo. “Llamen a este número, digan quiénes son y coordinen” nos dijeron.

Llamamos y atendió una señora; nos presentamos y ella dijo “por favor llamen más tarde; mi marido no está ahora porque está pasando inspección a la Primera División de Destructores”. Cuando cortamos nos dijimos “¿Y ahora qué hacemos? ¡El tipo es Marino!”. Luego de discutir qué hacer, si seguir adelante o no, finalmente lo llamamos. Resultó ser muy amable y nos dijo que al otro día un auto nos pasaría a buscar y nos llevaría a la granja. Y así fue.

Al mediodía nos llevaron a comer a un pub que era del señor (que era propietario de una marca de cerveza) y luego a la granja, realmente era hermosa. Pero la anécdota vino luego…

Al regresar, la persona que nos llevó dijo “El Capitán Oland los espera hoy a las 20:00 en su casa”. “¡Pah! ¿Qué hacemos?” nos dijimos. “Bueno, muchas gracias, ahí estaremos” respondimos. Recuerdo que compramos un muy lindo ramo de rosas, venía en una caja enorme. Cuando llegamos a la casa, nos atiende el Capitán con uniforme de gala y la mujer con un elegantísimo vestido largo. “¡Wow! ¿Y ahora qué?” pensamos. Entramos, nos atendió muy amablemente, recuerdo que cuando pedimos algo nos dijo “pasen a la cocina y sírvanse”, todo muy relajado.

Y en un momento dice “Bueno chicos, yo voy a una reunión con mi esposa y quiero que me acompañen”. Imaginate nuestras caras… Subimos los seis al auto, llegamos a un castillo estilo Tudor, todo iluminado. Él caminaba adelante, la mujer atrás y luego nosotros cuatro. Cuando entramos, estaba toda la plana mayor de la fragata Libertad rindiéndole honores a él… ¡y a cuatro cadetes propios! (Risas). ¡No entendían nada! Por suerte el Cap. Oland habló muy bien de nosotros y zafamos, pero la sorpresa fue enorme… ¡de los dos lados!

II. ONE SURPRISE AFTER ANOTHER Another anecdote from the training trip, which was very funny but also unexpected: while being in Halifax, I went out with a group of three friends and as we were walking through the city it occurred to me to say that I wanted to see a Canadian farm, to see what they were like. “Stop kidding around” my friends said, but I insisted so much that after a while we were checking in at a tourist office. “Call this number, tell them who you are and make the arrangements” they told us.

We made the call, and a lady answered the phone; We introduced ourselves and she said, “please call again later; my husband is not here now because he is passing inspection to the First Division of Destroyers”. When we hanged up, we said to ourselves “What do we do now? The guy is Sailor!”.

After discussing what to do, whether to go ahead or not, we finally called him. He turned out to be very kind and told us that the following day a car would pick us up and take us to the farm. At noon they took us to eat at a pub that belonged to the man (who owned a brand of beer) and then to the farm, it was really beautiful. But this was not the anecdote…

When we returned from the farm, the person who took us said “Captain Oland is waiting for you today at 20:00 at his house.” “Wow! What should we do?” we told each other. “Well, thank you very much, we’ll be there” we replied. I remember that we bought a very nice bouquet of roses, it came in a huge box. When we arrived at the house, the Captain welcomed us in a gala uniform and the woman in a very elegant long dress. “Wow! And now what?” we asked ourselves. We went in, he treated us very kindly, I remember that when we asked for something, he told us “come to the kitchen and help yourselves”, all very relaxed.

And at one point he says, “Well guys, I’m going to a meeting with my wife and I want you to join me.” Imagine our faces ... All six of us got into the car, we arrived at a Tudor-style castle, all illuminated. He walked ahead of us, the woman behind, and then the four of us. When we went inside, the entire staff of the frigate Libertad was there paying honors to him ... and to his four cadets! (Laughs) They didn’t understand anything! Luckily, Captain Oland spoke highly of us, the surprise was enormous… from both sides!

Su escuela de vela se inició en 1950 y se encarga de la formación de muchos navegantes portugueses hasta la actualidad, algunos de ellos con proyección internacional. ocated next to Marina, Clube Naval de Cascais was founded in 1938 and since then, it has assumed an important role in the development of water sports in Portugal, especially in sailing. The Sailing School started in 1950 and is responsible for the training of several Portuguese sailors until today, some of them with international projection. Inaugurated in 2007, the Center of Hight Performance allows the Club to receive and support any type of competition.

With the support of the Cascais City Council, Clube Naval de Cascais has consolidated its position as a reference in Portugal for the

realization of great national and international regattas, contributing therefore to a direct impact on the local economy and at the affirmation of Cascais as a destination choice to the practising the sport.

Sailing School

Since the 1950s, CNC has operated a sailing school for all age groups, and from 2006 runs a disabled sailing program, both programs are presently the most active in Portugal.

CNC also instructs competition teams in different classes, namely Optimist, 420 and Laser and provides official courses for all levels of national amateur licenses to operate boats. Sailors formed and trained

in the CNC have over the years regularly won several major international sailing titles in varied classes, including disabled sailing.

CNC sailors have frequently constituted the majority of the Portuguese Olympic sailing team, with nine sailors in the 2012 London Olympics competing in five Olympic sail classes and four sailors in Rio de Janeiro Olympics in two different sail classes.

Distinctions Over the years, Clube Naval de Cascais was awarded more than once, noteworthy for the assignment of the Naval Distinction Vasco da Gama in 2001, with the Medal of Honor of the City of Cascais in 2007, in its

Regattas CNC is one of the world’s acknowledged best venues to organize all type of sailing competitions. The CNC runs a very active annual schedule of different type of regattas that represented 115 days of sail racing.

There’s also the administrative offices, locker rooms and storage spaces and about 8.000 square meters of open air dry storage area for boats up to 12m with two cranes (max. lift 4 tons), two large ramps, 3 disembarkation pontoons and 30 moorings for boats up to 9 meters.

Cascais Marina The Cascais Marina is located next to Clube Naval de Cascais. With a capacity for 650 vessels, Cascais Marina has been constantly improving its facilities and services so that its already exceptional conditions – on land and in the sea – can be enjoyed by all who use them. ¿Desde cuándo es uno de los Directores Elegidos del ICOYC? Fui elegido como Director del ICOYC en abril de 2019. ¿Cúal es su función para la institución?

Mi función es ayudar al Vicepresidente de la zona Europa y facilitar vínculos las zonas de Europe y América del Sur. También estoy en el Comité de Nuevos Clubes y soy el Chairman del Comité de Nominaciones para futuros cargos directivos. ¿Ha estado en Punta del Este?

No, no he tenido esa felicidad. Tenía programado para marzo y para noviembre (ambas fechas en 2020) pero por los motivos que todos conocemos tuve que cancelar los planes.

Usted fue quien apadrinó la incorporación de nuestro YCPE al ICOYC, siendo el único Club de América del Sur. ¿Qué cosas destacaría del YCPE para tener el honor de obtener tal distinción?

Con la entrada del Clube Naval de Cascais en el ICOYC, me di cuenta de que el ICOYC era más que nada una asociación anglosajona, germánica y nórdica. Nosotros los latinos no estábamos. De esta forma y estando las otras culturas representadas por los mejores Yacht Clube del mundo, tengo la misión de añadir al ICOYC los mejores Yacht Clubes latinos del mundo.

Faltaban, por ejemplo: de España, el Real Club Náutico de Palma y el Real Club Náutico de Barcelona; de Francia el Yacht Club de France y el Yacht Club de Mónaco, América del Sur el Yacht Club de Punta de Este, el Yacht Club Argentino y el Iate Club do Río de Janeiro. En este momento, de Europa solo el Yacht Club de France no es miembro aún y de América del Sur estamos avanzados con el proceso de añadir los otros dos clubes en estado avanzado (el YCPE ya es miembro).

Contestando directamente a su cuestión, los tres clubes sudamericanos mencionados eran clubs deseados por el ICOYC. El motivo de que el YCPE haya sido el primero se debe a una sola razón: vuestro Comodoro, Juan Etcheverrito, es un comodoro presente, muy activo y con una internacionalización muy importante.

Entendió rápidamente lo bueno que sería para el YCPE ser miembro del Consejo y además ser el primero de Sud América; eso será eterno y se debe a una sola persona: al Comodoro Etcheverrito. ¿Cuál es la misión principal del ICOYC en el mundo de la náutica?

En Educación y Colaboración: acceso a una biblioteca rica en recursos de las mejores prácticas de los clubes de yates, compilada de los foros internacionales. Los temas incluyen gobernanza, membresía, gestión de carreras, tendencias internacionales y más. Invitaciones a foros mundiales y conferencias regionales donde los miembros disfrutan de programas de varios días de oradores, debates y networking. Una plataforma a través de la cual los profesionales del club pueden debatir temas de manera confidencial junto con sus contrapartes en clubes similares.

Networking y Amistad: acceso a una red internacional de socios del club náutico, oficiales de bandera y profesionales, los cuales todos han “estado allí”. Este grupo se llama unos a otros durante todo el año para obtener asesoramiento y colaboración. Una cálida bienvenida a los clubes del Consejo de todo el mundo. La reciprocidad no está implícita en la membresía del Consejo, pero nuestros miembros viajan con frecuencia entre clubes.

Viajes y Social: cruceros organizados en destinos marítimos de todo el mundo, a menudo con un guía local experimentado y miembro de un club del consejo.

Invitaciones para competir en regatas o disfrutar de eventos emblemáticos en clubes del Consejo. Programas de socios a través de los cuales los socios de los asistentes al evento pueden explorar la región local adyacente al Foro Mundial oficial. Programas de intercambio de jóvenes entre clubes del Ayuntamiento. ¿Cuáles son los planes a futuro del ICOYC? El ICOYC tiene el gran desafío de conseguir tener a todos sus miembros conectados de modo digital y permanente, poder compartir la mayor información posible, no solo con las Directivas sino tambien con los socios de los clubes.

INTERVIEW Since when have you been Elected Director of the ICOYC? I was chosen Director of the ICOYC in April 2019.

Which is your role in the institution?

My role is to help the Vice President in the European zone and to facilitate links in Europe and South America. I am also on the New Clubs Committee and the Chairman of the Nominating Committee for future management positions.

Have you ever been in Punta del Este?

No, I did not have the pleasure yet. I had scheduled for March and November (both dates in 2020) but for evident reasons I had to cancel the plans.

You were the one who fostered the incorporation of our YCPE to the ICOYC, being the only Club in South America. What things would you highlight from the YCPE to have the honor of obtaining such a distinction?

With the entry of the Clube Naval de Cascais into the ICOYC, I realized that the ICOYC was more than anything an Anglo-Saxon, Germanic and Nordic association. We, Latinos, were not included. This way, and with other cultures represented by the best Yacht Clubs in the world, I had the mission of adding the best Latin Yacht Clubs in the world to ICOYC. The clubs that were still missing, were, for example: from Spain, the Real Club Náutico of Palma and the Real Club Náutico of Barcelona; from France the Yacht Club of France and the Yacht Club of Monaco, South America the Yacht Club of Punta de Este, the Yacht Club Argentino and the Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro. At this time, in Europe, the only one that was not a member was the Yacht Club de France and in South America we are advancing in the process of adding the other two clubs (the YCPE is already a member).

I will answer question directly, the three mentioned South American clubs were desired by the ICOYC. The reason why the YCPE was the first one is due to just one reason: your Commodore, Juan Etcheverrito; He is a present commodore, very active and with a very important internationalization. He quickly understood how good it would be for the YCPE to be a member of the Council and also, to be the first in South America; that will be eternal and is due to a single person: Commodore Etcheverrito.

Which is the main mission of the ICOYC in the world of sailing?

Education y Collaboration: Access to a resource-rich library of yacht club best practices, compiled from International Forums. Topics include governance, membership, race management, international trends and more. Invitations to World Forums and Regional Conferences where members enjoy multi-day programs of speakers, discussions and networking. A platform through which club professionals can confidentially discuss issues alongside their counterparts at similar clubs.

Networking y Friendship: Access to an international network of yacht club members, Flag Officers, and professionals, all of whom have “been there”. This group calls on one another throughout the year for counsel and collaboration. A warm welcome to Council clubs around the world. Reciprocity is not implied in Council membership, but our members travel frequently between clubs.

Travel y Social: Organized cruises in maritime destinations around the world, often with an experienced local guide and member of a Council club. Invitations to compete in regattas or enjoy “signature” events at fellow Council clubs. Which are the plans for the future of the ICOYC? The ICOYC has the great challenge of having all its members connected in a digital and permanent way, being able to share as much information as possible, not only with the Board of Directors but also with the club members.

JUGANDO ¿Cómo surge su pasión por los autitos?

No fue algo innato. Me fui a estudiar bioquímica a EE.UU. pero no pude terminarlo, era muy caro. Volví y trabajé varias temporadas en edificios y hoteles de Punta del Este, hasta que me fui a las Islas Canarias y fue ahí precisamente donde se me ocurrió esta idea, hoy convertida en pasión.

casi siempre tuvo restaurantes y un par de años seguidos tuvo en la Parada 2 una sala de maquinitas, donde había un muchacho que tenía una pista de autitos de madera, de las antiguas. Se la sub-alquiló y la armó en el local nuestro. Nosotros vivíamos ahí mismo; yo era chico y eso me quedó grabado porque me encantaba, pero nunca más lo vi.

¿A qué edad se fue a Europa?

En 1983. Estuve unos 13 años y me casé allá con una canaria, mi primera esposa. Yo era Jefe de Recepción en un hotel en Tenerife y ella recepcionista. Dejé el trabajo por el tema del casamiento y me fui a vivir al norte de la isla, pero estuve casi un año y medio sin trabajar. La seguía a ella porque era profesora de inglés. Nos fuimos a Gran Canaria y una noche de insomnio, se me ocurrió esta idea.

¿Qué hizo en España?

En Tenerife estuvimos a punto del alquilar un local con un amigo argentino para poner un salón de maquinitas.

Pero entonces se me ocurrió buscar si existía el tema de los autitos. Y obviamente existía; Scalextric, la misma marca. Y pensé “No, no voy a poner un local. ¿Qué pasaría si pongo un Scalextric donde esté lleno de gente?”.

¿Y esto lo había conocido allá?

No, lo había conocido acá. Mi padre

¿Y dónde está lleno de gente?

En las ferias populares de España.

Cada pueblo tiene al menos una vez al año una fiesta tradicional. Yo había

ido a muchas y veía cómo se llenaba de gente local y de pueblos cercanos durante días; gente que visitaba y compraba lo que fuera. Hay atracciones itinerantes de los llamados “Feriantes” que son toda una raza aparte.

Lo descubrí. ¡Complicado! (Ríe). Pero bueno, me hice hacer una caseta de feria, a medida y desarmable, de lona, y le puse una pista de cuatro carriles como atracción. La inauguré en Maspalomas, Gran Canaria y fue un éxito total. Esto fue el día siguiente de mi cumpleaños número 30: el 9 de mayo de 1991. O sea que Tuerkitas va a cumplir 30 años en pocos meses, porque nunca más me dediqué a otra cosa. ¿Qué puede decirnos de los feriantes?

Me terminé haciendo feriante y recorrí muchos kilómetros; recuerdo que ellos no lo podían creer y me decían “¿Pero cómo es que no das regalos a los participantes?”. ¡No entendían el concepto! ¡La gente hacía cola para

jugar! Los puestos suelen ser del tipo tirar al blanco, o tirar latas con una pelotita, lo que sea, pero siempre te tienen que dar algo al terminar. Y lo asombroso –para ellos– era que yo no tenía que regalar nada. Y claro, no les gustaba eso ¡yo era la mosca en el vaso de leche! (risas). Lo mío era totalmente diferente, es más, era la única caseta donde los niños estaban haciendo cola para jugar ¡antes de que abriera! Imaginate. ¿Cómo siguió?

Hice una nueva caseta, de metal, con una pista de seis carriles. Me la hicieron unos uruguayos que vivían allá. Y estuve ocho años trabajando de eso; me costó el matrimonio obviamente.

Porque mi ex me dijo “o esto o yo” y no la elegí a ella aunque te parezca mentira. Es que yo llegaba a las 6:00 AM y ella se iba a trabajar a esa hora y la cosa empezó a ponerse mal. Pero no podía dejarlo, era económicamente bueno y además me encantaba. ¿Y por qué decidió volverse a Uruguay?

Porque me cansé de tanto armar y desarmar. Y además porque me quedé solo, lógicamente. Así que vendí la camioneta y guardé la pista. Luego me la traje para acá y empecé a armarla en locales en Punta del Este. Comencé en un local justo acá en frente, aunque sin mucho éxito. Luego abrió el Punta Shopping y pude asociarme para estar allí. Y ahí sí fue una buena temporada. Trabajé un año, le vendí mi mitad a mi socio y me fui nuevamente a Estados Unidos, con la idea de hacer una pista allá. ¡E hice varias! ¿A qué ciudad fue?

Me fui a San Luis, Missouri, a la casa de un gran amigo. Estuve dos años trabajando en una empresa de inspección técnica vehicular –medíamos la emisión de gases– para juntar dinero para invertir en la pista. Compré todo el material, encontré un shopping que me aceptó la idea y empecé así.

Entonces también trabajó en EE.UU. con las pistas.

Si, estuve del 2000 al 2008, cuando vino la crisis. Ahí me volví a Uruguay. ¡Y no me voy más! ¿Y dónde se instaló?

Acá mismo, en este local. Van a cumplirse 12 años en 2021. ¿Cuál es el público de Tuerkitas?

Hablaba de niños en España…

No, no, ¡son de todas las edades! El rango de edad es desde los 3 años hasta los 93… ¡o más! (Risas) ¿En EE.UU. también?

Absolutamente. Allá estuve en tres estados y en cinco shoppings en total y había gente de todas las edades.

Fue curioso, porque allá abría los negocios, los explotaba tres, seis meses, a veces hasta tres años y los vendía llave en mano. Lo hice tres veces: San Luis, Atlanta y Baltimore. ¿Y no pensó en crear una franquicia?

Por supuesto, también lo averigüé.

Pero era un lío. Aunque lidiar con los shoppings es mucho más fácil que acá; te ayudan mucho, pero legalmente era muy complicado; por suerte no lo hice. ¿Cómo adquirió sus conocimientos sobre las marcas y los modelos?

Porque me gusta esta versión de autitos, el Slot Europeo. Las marcas se centran mucho más en los detalles de cada modelo; en cambio en el Slot Norteamericano usan chasis metálicos donde cualquier carrocería encaja, no hay énfasis en el detalle.

Los europeos son réplicas exactas de los autos. Tengo unos 300, pero hay miles. A mucha gente le gusta venir a verlos, salen charlas sobre modelos usados en películas por ejemplo, o mismo alguno que algún cliente tuvo.

Por eso los exhibimos ¡pero no los vendemos! (Risas). Consumo mucha información sobre autos; me gustan los súper deportivos y saber qué fábrica los hace en versión slot. ¿Hay muchas fábricas?

Hay varias, pero yo me centro en las más detallistas. Porque hasta se fijan en la posición del motor en el auto real y así es la réplica. Por ejemplo, tenemos autitos con motor delantero pero tracción posterior usando un cardán, igual que el modelo real. Hasta le hacen los detalles en el piso del auto con relieves, escapes y demás.

AS PLAY Where did your passion for cars begin?

It was not innate. I went to the US to study biochemistry, but I couldn’t finish it, it was too expensive. I returned and worked for several seasons in buildings and hotels in Punta del Este, until I went to the Canary Islands and it was precisely there that I came up with this idea, that has now turned into a passion.

At what age did you go to Europe?

In 1983. I was there for about 13 years and I married a Canarian woman, my first wife. I was Head of Reception at a hotel in Tenerife and she was a receptionist. We got married so I quit my job and we went to live in the north of the island, but I spent almost a year and a half without working. I followed her because she was an English teacher.

We went to Gran Canaria and one sleepless night, I came up with this idea.

What did you do in Spain?

In Tenerife we ​​were about to rent a place with an Argentine friend to set up a machine room. But then it occurred to me to find out if this thing of slot cars existed. And it obviously did exist; Scalextric, the same brand. And I thought “No, I’m not going to put a store. What would happen if I put a Scalextric where it’s full of people?

And where is it full of people?

At popular fairs in Spain. Each town has a traditional festival at least once a year. I had been to many of them and saw how it was filled with local people and people from nearby towns for days; people who visited and bought all sorts of things. There are itinerant attractions of the so-called “Feriantes” (fairground workers) that are a whole different race of people. I discovered that. So complicated! (Laughs) But well, I had a custom-made and collapsible fairground booth made of canvas, and I put a four-lane track as an attraction. I opened it in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria and it was a great success. This was the day after my 30th birthday: May 9, 1991. So Tuerkitas will be 30 years old in a few months, because I never stopped doing this.

Otra celebridad que vino a jugar fue Vicente Fox, el ex Presidente de México, con sus guardaespaldas. Y futbolistas, incontables.

And I spent eight years working on that; it cost me my marriage obviously. Because my ex told me “it’s either this or me” and I did not choose her even if it seems crazy. The thing is that I used to get home at 6:00 am and she left for work at that time and things started to go bad. But I couldn’t leave my job, it was financially good and I also loved it.

And why did you decide to go back to Uruguay?

Because I got tired of so much assembling and disassembling. And also, because I was alone, of course. So, I sold the truck and kept the track. Then I brought it here and started to put it together in stores in Punta del Este. I started in a place right across the street, although it wasn’t very successful.

Then the Punta Shopping opened, and I was able to partner with them to be there. And that was a good season. I worked for a year, I sold my part to my partner and I went back to the United States, with the idea of ​​making a track there. And I did several!

To which city did you go?

I went to St. Louis, Missouri, to stay at a very close friend’s home. I spent two years working in a vehicle technical inspection company - we measured the gas emissions - to raise money to invest in the track. I bought all the supplies, I found a shopping mall that accepted the idea and I started like that.

Si, pero especialmente en Atlanta, porque el local estaba muy cerca de una pista donde se corre el American Le Mans Series. Ahí armamos una pista descomunal, fue furor. ¡Tenía 139 metros de recorrido! Durante varios años fue la pista de slot más larga del mundo. Lamborghini. Me encanta su diseño y me encanta el toro, porque soy de Tauro y en el horóscopo chino de Búfalo ¡aunque no creo mucho en eso!

European models are exact replicas of cars. I have about 300 of them, but there are thousands. Many people like to come to see them, we talk about models used in movies for example, or even about models that clients used to have. That’s why we display them, but we don’t sell them! (Laughs) I consume a lot of information about cars; I like super sports cars and to know which factory makes them in slot version.

Are there many factories?

Yes, there are several, but I like to focus on the most detailed ones. Because they even look at the position of the engine in the real car and that’s the true replica. For example, we have cars with front engine but rear traction using a universal joint, just like the real model. They even do the details on the floor of the car with textures, exhaust pipes, etc.

My favorite one is the Spanish brand called Fly. Here we have cars with longitudinal, transverse and 45º rear engines, which are the “Super Fast” ones because they have a lot of torque.

Have “famous” people come to play?

Yes, many! Mauricio Macri was in the shop at the shopping mall (who would later become President of Argentina) along with Daniel Scioli, the former sports boat racer. What’s more, we had a poster with the best lap times and Scioli didn’t accept not being at the top. Although we do not sell the cars, we had to make an exception for him given his fanaticism and we sold him an F1 Ferrari, a very fast one. He did not stop until he got first place!

(Laughs) Another celebrity who came to play was Vicente Fox, the former President of Mexico, with his bodyguards. And countless football players.

And tell us about Tuerkitas’ customers? You mentioned kids in Spain…
