Estimados socios: El Yacht Club Punta del Este ha realizado los mejores esfuerzos para mantener al Club en el calendario de los grandes eventos mundiales del Yachting. En efecto, de acuerdo con las mejores tradiciones del Club -el que desde su fundación en el año 1924 ha recibido con entusiasmo y hospitalidad a los navegantes del Atlántico Sur-, en los próximos días, el YCPE, nuestro puerto y la ciudad de Punta del Este tendrán el honor de recibir nuevamente a la Regata Clipper Alrededor del Mundo.

Esta designación, por segunda vez consecutiva como único puerto anfitrión en Sudamérica, nos recuerda con satisfacción la participación del Club en varias de las regatas oceánicas más importantes en las que también fuimos anfitriones, como la Cape Town - Punta del Este, la Whitbread Round the World o la BOC Round the World así como más recientemente la Velux 5 Oceans.

La recalada en el puerto de Punta del Este en ocasión de la regata anterior en el mes de octubre de 2017 resultó todo un éxito con la asistencia a la ciudad de un muy importante número de visitantes de la región. En esta oportunidad esperamos que se reitere y que sumados a los más de 700 tripulantes de más de 40 nacionalidades y sus familiares se genere nuevamente

un movimiento de importancia en la ciudad. Asimismo, las reiteradas menciones en los principales medios de prensa nacionales, regionales e internacionales han derivado en consultas e interés de nuevos visitantes con un valor agregado para el país y el departamento. Haremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para que ahora resulte de igual forma.

Pero la intervención del Club en esta edición 2019-2020 no se limita a la participación como puerto anfitrión. Gracias al aporte de nuestros generosos sponsors, de las autoridades nacionales, de la Intendencia de Maldonado, de la Dirección de Hidrografía así como del apoyo de la Organización, en esta ocasión, la participación del YCPE se extiende y uno de los once idénticos barcos participantes llevará -durante las 41.000 millas náuticas de la regata y la escala en 15 puertos alrededor del mundo que demandará la circunavegación- el gallardete de nuestra Institución y el nombre de la ciudad de Punta del Este. Asimismo, según lo convenido con los organizadores, varios socios del YCPE formarán parte de la tripulación del barco.

También corresponde resaltar otras actividades internacionales y nacionales programadas por el Club, con un intenso calendario de regatas durante todo el año, entre las que se destaca una próxima edición de la ya tradicional regata Rolex, con la

Dear partners: The Yacht Club Punta del Este has made the best efforts to keep the Club on the calendar of the world’s greatest events of Yachting. In fact, according to the best traditions of the Club - the one that since its foundation in 1924 has received with enthusiasm and hospitality the navigators of the South Atlantic - in the next few days, the YCPE, our port and the city of Punta del Este will have the honour of receiving the Clipper Race Round the World again.

This designation, for the second consecutive time as the only host port in South America, reminds us with satisfaction of the Club’s participation in several of the most important ocean races where we were also hosts, such as the Cape Town - Punta del Este, the Whitbread Round the World or the BOC Round the World as well as more recently the Velux 5 Oceans.

But the intervention of the Club in this edition 2019-2020, is not limited to participation as a host port. Thanks to the contribution of our generous sponsors, national authorities, Government of Maldonado, Hydrography Directorate as well as of the support of the Organization, on this occasion, the participation of the YCPE is extended and one of the eleven identical participating ships it will take - during the 41,000 nautical miles of the regatta and the stopover in 15 ports around the world that will demand the surrounding of the navigation - the pennant of our institution and the name of the city of Punta del Este. Also, as agreed with the organizers, several YCPE partners will be part of the ship’s crew.

It is also worth highlighting other international and national activities programmed by the Club, with an intense calendar of regattas throughout the year, among which an upcoming edition of the traditional Rolex regatta stands out, with the projected participation of more than eighty boats, to which, with the approval of the sponsor’s parent company, has been equipped with a new and modern format, ensuring its continuity and assuming the YCPE to directly organize the event by providing services, qualified personnel from our boathouse, support vessels and ar-

bitrators. The different Commissions of the Club are also working on the organization of the South American J70 Class Championship -class in which the YCPE has been a pioneer with the incorporation of the first ships in the continent- we maintain the validity of the agreement to exchange the Small Optimist class navigators with the Monaco Yacht Club, among many other activities of the other classes that are impossible to review in this space and whose calendar can be consulted on the Club’s website.

This Board of Directors has tried since the beginning of its management to increase the activities of the Club, optimizing the use of resources and its services, benefiting from a unique enclave, strategically located and privileged by nature, always maintaining an adequate balance between the areas of learning, competence and social navigation.

Desde hace 40 años, el Yacht Club Punta del Este es anfitrión de regatas transoceánicas y alrededor del mundo

odo comenzó cuando recibimos la Cape Town a Punta del Este en 1979. En esa regata corrió nuestro consocio David Griffiths, y fue el referente de muchos aventureros que quisieron imitarlo. Eran épocas de barcos de crucero modificados para correr, sextantes para navegar y todos navegantes de clubes, nadie profesional.

El YCPE está acostumbrado a renovar y aumentar las apuestas en cada edición. En 1982, un barco tripulado por Harry Giuria (padre e hijo), los hermanos Filipelli, Carlos Rico y quien escribe, corrió desde Sudáfrica siendo los primeros uruguayos en correr una

regata transatlántica.

Luego vinieron las tres ediciones de la regata Whitbread alrededor del mundo, con la participación de Edmundo López en la primera edición. En la edición de 1993-1994 se enfrentó el desafío de apoyar al Uruguay Natural con tripulación de varios clubes náuticos y la Armada Nacional, logrando la primera vuelta al mundo en regata de un barco con el pabellón nacional.

También recibimos regatas en solitario como la BOC, la Velux y la regata Colón, donde nuestro gallardete ondeó a bordo del Martínez del Dr. Dalchiele y el Ingeniero Miller.

Pero estos 40 años han mostrado un cambio profundo en los barcos y sus tripulaciones. Actualmente las regatas oceánicas más conocidas como la Volvo y otras, son corridas por profesionales. Grandes empresas financian presupuestos siderales, lo que ha dado enormes adelantos en diseños y performances, pero ha excluido a muchísima gente, principalmente al navegante aventurero y amateur de los clubes.

The Clipper Race: the ultimate ocean adventure for everyone?

For 40 years, the Yacht Club Punta del Este has hosted transoceanic regattas and around the world

I

t all started when we received Cape Town to Punta del Este in 1979. On that regatta ran our consort David Griffiths, and was the benchmark of many adventurers who wanted to imitate him.

They were times of modified cruise ships for running, sextants for sailing and all club navigators, nobody professional.

The YCPE is used to renew and increase bets in each edition. In 1982, a ship manned by Harry Giuria (father and son), the Filipelli brothers, Carlos Rico and who writes, ran from South Africa being the first Uruguayans to run a transatlantic race.

Then came the three editions of the Whitbread Regatta around the world, with the participation of Edmundo Lรณpez in the first edition. In the 1993-1994 edition, the

challenge of supporting Natural Uruguay with the crew of several yacht clubs and the National Navy was met, achieving the first round the world in a boat race with the national flag.

We also received solo races such as the BOC, the Velux and the Columbus Regatta, where our pennant flew aboard the Martinez of Dr Dalchiele and Engineer Miller.

But these 40 years have shown a profound change in ships and their crews. Currently, the best-known ocean races such as Volvo and others, are run by professionals. Large companies finance sidereal budgets, which has given enormous advances in designs and performances, but has excluded many people, mainly the adventurous and amateur navigator from the clubs.

Y manteniendo la tradición de redoblar apuestas y desafíos de una edición a otra, esta vez nuestro barco Punta del Este dará la vuelta al mundo.

Estados Unidos, luego Bermuda y finalmente Irlanda del Norte.

Pero como comentamos más arriba en el artículo, viendo quienes tripularán nuestro barco, se explica el por qué de embarcarnos en este proyecto. El capitán del Punta del Este será Jerónimo Santos González, de Galicia, España. Pero en toda la vuelta al mundo, la sorprendente cifra de 23 mujeres y 46 hombres serán tripulantes en las distintas etapas, representando a 19 países.

When the Yacht Club Punta del Este was contacted by the Clipper Race, the opportunity to recover the ancient spirit of crossing oceans through the adventure itself was immediately seen, with crew members who had always dreamed of doing so.

Receiving in Punta del Este hundreds of adventurers from different professions and backgrounds, who when they crossed the finish line fulfilled a dream, is the greatest satisfaction that receiving this regatta gives us. And maintaining the tradition of redoubling bets and challenges from one edition to another, this time our ship Punta del Este will go around the world.

PUNTA DEL ESTE, OUR BOAT IN THE REGATTA With its yellow-painted hull, a sun in the bow and Punta del Este in its bands, the Yacht Club Punta del Este will put our spa for more than a year on the world map of ocean navigation.

The challenge is great; For the first time, a Club boat - with the name Punta del Este - will be present in all the ports around the world where the regatta arrives. The list is shocking: Portimao in Portugal; Cape Town in South Africa; Fremantle in Australia; Sanya, Zhuhai and Quindao in China; Seattle and New York in the United States, then Bermuda and finally Northern Ireland.

Con su casco pintado en amarillo, un sol en la proa y Punta del Este en sus bandas, el Yacht Club Punta del Este pondrá a nuestro balneario durante más de un año en el mapa mundial de la navegación oceánica.

El desafío es grande; por primera vez un barco del Club –con el nombre Punta del Este– estará presente en todos los puertos alrededor del mundo en que la regata recala. La lista es impactante: Portimao en Portugal; Cape Town en Sudáfrica; Fremantle en Australia; Sanya, Zuhai y Quindao en China; Seattle y Nueva York en

nueva función en regatas: la integración de navegantes provenientes de distintos países a bordo de nuestro barco. Tendremos cuatro representantes del club viviendo esta experiencia, ellos son Alejandra Alvira, Sofía Strasser, Darío Rodríguez y Nano Antía.

Nuestros fundadores estarán tranquilos y orgullosos, el Yacht Club Punta del Este sigue siendo el anfitrión de grandes regatas, enseña a navegar a niños desde los siete años y permite que la aventura de cruzar océanos y dar la vuelta al mundo se pueda cumplir para quien lo desee.

But as we commented above in the article, seeing who will crew our ship, the reason for embarking on this project is explained. The captain of Punta del Este will be Jerónimo Santos González, from Galicia, Spain. But all around the world, the surprising number of 23 women and 46 men will be crew members at different stages, representing 19 countries.

In this way, the club fulfils a new function in regattas: the integration of navigators from different countries aboard our boat. We will have four club representatives living this experience, they are Alejandra Alvira, Sofía Strasser, Darío Rodríguez and Nano Antía.

Our founders will be calm and proud, the Punta del Este Yacht Club remains the host of great regattas, teaches children to sail from age seven and allows the adventure of crossing oceans and going around the world to be fulfilled for those who wish.

El bautismo El 30 de agosto llegó el día de bautizar el barco Punta del Este, con una muy animada tripulación y un gran número de asistentes.

Además de la delegación del YCPE, contamos con la presencia del Señor Embajador de Uruguay en UK Esc. Fernando López Fabregat y Sra; del Capitán de Navío Gustavo Luciani, Agregado de Defensa y Representante de Uruguay ante la Organización Marítima Internacional, quien asistió en representación del Señor Comandante en Jefe de la Armada; y de la Señora Gabriela Zimmer, Sommelier y Brand Ambassador para Wines of Uruguay, como invitada de nuestro Team Supporter Bodega Garzón.

La ceremonia comenzó con unas palabras del Comodoro Etcheverrito, agradeciendo a quienes apoyan el evento y homenajeando a la tripulación del barco, en especial a los cuatro uruguayos que participarán en la regata: Sra. Alejandra Alvira, Sra. Sofía Strasser, Sr. Fernando Antía y Sr. Darío Rodríguez.

Destacó la motivación notoria entre los tripulantes, aprovechando la oportunidad para realizar una arenga y solicitarles que el Punta del Este llegue en primer lugar, generando gran entusiasmo entre los presentes. A continuación el fundador y Presidente de la Clipper Race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, felicitó a la tripulación y agradeció al Yacht Club Punta del Este, para luego pasar al barco a realizar el bautismo y revelar los cuatro Team Supporters del Punta del Este: Urufarma, Bodega Garzón, Banco Santander y Seguros Sura, a quienes agradecemos por su invaluable apoyo.

Asimismo, agradecemos también al Ministerio de Transporte y Obras Públicas - Dirección Nacional de Hidrografía, Ministerio de Turismo y a la Intendencia Departamental de Maldonado.

Baptism of the yacht Punta del Este On August 30, the day of baptizing the Punta del Este ship arrived, with a very lively crew and a large number of attendees.

IVn addition to the YCPE delegation, we have the presence of the Ambassador of Uruguay in the UK Esc. Fernando López Fabregat and wife; of Captain Gustavo Luciani, Attaché of Defense and Representative of Uruguay to the International Maritime Organization, who attended on behalf of the Commander in Chief of the Navy; and Mrs. Gabriela Zimmer, Sommelier and Brand Ambassador for Wines of Uruguay, as a guest of our Team Supporter Bodega Garzón.

The ceremony began with a few words from Commodore Etcheverrito, thanking those who support the event and paying tribute to the ship’s crew, especially to the four Uruguayans who will participate in the race: Ms Alejandra Alvira, Ms Sofía Strasser, Mr Fernando Antía and Mr Darío Rodríguez.

He highlighted the notorious motivation among the crew, taking advantage of the opportunity to make a harangue and request that Punta del Este arrive first, generating great enthusiasm among those present. Next, the founder and President of the Clipper Race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, congratulated the crew and thanked the Yacht Club Punta del Este, then went to the ship to perform the baptism and reveal the four Team Supporters of Punta del Este: Urufarma, Bodega Garzón, Banco Santander and Seguros Sura, whom we thank for their invaluable support. Likewise, we also thank the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works-National Directorate of Hydrography, Ministry of Tourism and the Departmental Administration of Maldonado.

Painting dreams ¿Cómo surje esta oportunidad?

En mi vida tuve la oportunidad de navegar un poco y de trabajar en la playa haciendo gráficas para diferentes veleros. A su vez, acá en Punta del Este y Maldonado participo como educador y profesor de arte en varias actividades de inclusión, dedicadas especialmente a los jóvenes y vinculadas con deportes acuáticos. ¿Por ejemplo…?

ESTAMOS MUY CONTENTOS CON ESE AMARILLO QUE LOGRAMOS QUE RESALTA, TIENE MUCHA ENERGÍA Y TODA LA VIBRA QUE HAY ALREDEDOR DE ESTE PROYECTO QUE ES POSITIVA. WE ARE VERY HAPPY WITH THAT YELLOW WE ACHIEVE THAT IT HIGHLIGHTS, IT HAS A LOT OF ENERGY AND ALL THE VIBRA THAT IS AROUND THIS PROJECT THAT IS POSITIVE.

Un evento particular es el “Va pa’l agua” que se desarrolla el Día del las Playas en El Emir, con una actividad de deporte inclusivo y fue a través de varios años de trabajo en esa área que surgió la oportunidad de trabajar la imagen del velero Punta del Este. ¿Ha hecho otros trabajos relacionados con la náutica?

Sí, el tema náutico es muy interesante y también muy amplio. He trabajado muchos años con Canoa Quebrada y Flesh (N. de R.: comercios de Punta del Este vinculados al surf) además de otras empresas de la península. Siempre buscamos trabajar una imagen gráfica que ayude a desarrollar Punta del Este hacia el mundo, por lo que ésta fue una nueva gran oportunidad que tuvimos. ¿Qué destaca del diseño que hizo?

La verdad que fue una gran oportunidad y disfruté mucho llevándola a cabo.

Creo que lo más destacado es el color predominante. Ese amarillo resalta, tiene mucha energía y sumado a toda la buena vibra que hay alrededor de este proyecto, creo que lo hacen muy atractivo… ¡y me encanta! Además, es un barco que abre Punta del Este al mundo, lo que podrá traer nuevos vientos y oportunidades.

We spoke with Pablo Comas, artist and designer who developed the design of the Punta del Este sailboat hull for the

2019-20 Clipper Race.

How did this opportunity arise?

In my life, I had the opportunity to sail a little and work on the beach making graphics for different sailboats. In turn, here in Punta del Este and Maldonado, I participate as an educator and art teacher in various inclusion activities, especially dedicated to young people and linked to water sports.

For example…?

A particular event is the “Go to da water” that takes place on the Day of the Beaches in El Emir, with an inclusive sports activity and it was through several years of work in that area that the opportunity to work the image emerged of the sailboat Punta del Este.

Have you done other works related to nautical?

Yes, the nautical theme is very interesting and also very broad. I have worked for many years with Canoa Quebrada and Flesh (note: shops in Punta del Este linked to surfing) as well as other companies in the peninsula. We always seek to work a graphic image that helps develop Punta del Este towards the world, so this was a great new opportunity we had.

What stands out from the design you made?

The truth was that it was a great opportunity and I really enjoyed carrying it out. I think the highlight is the predominant colour. That yellow stands out, has a lot of energy and added to all the good vibes that are around this project, I think they make it very attractive ... and I love it! In addition, it is a ship that opens Punta del Este to the world, which may bring new winds and opportunities.

EL AMBIENTE La Fan Zone ubicada junto a la flota en St. Katharine Docks fue centro de una intensa actividad durante toda la semana, en la cual el público pudo visitar los barcos, recorrer las marinas e informarse acerca de la regata, sus participantes y puertos de recalada. Punto en donde convergen culturas de todas partes del mundo, resultaba fácil distinguir entre la multitud a nuestros tripulantes del Punta del Este, quienes con su gran espíritu de equipo y relacionamiento con el público se ganaron la simpatía de los visitantes.

LAS ACTIVIDADES Fue una semana de mucha actividad en los alrededores del muelle. Los barcos estuvieron abiertos al público para visitas, además del programa especial para Partners de la regata. La parte comercial fue uno de los puntos altos entre las actividades que tiene esta regata, y se desarrolló el Clipper Connect Business Series 2019-20, evento de networking en el que se interactúa con personas del área comercial o de negocios de todas partes del mundo y se repite en casi todos los puertos que la regata hace escala, incentivando el intercambio comercial tanto entre los“Race Partners” (sponsors globales de la Clipper Race, quienes fueron los disertantes), los Host Ports y los Team Partners.

THE ENVIRONMENT The Fan Zone located next to the fleet in St. Katharine Docks was the centre of intense activity throughout the week, in which the public was able to visit the boats, tour the marinas and learn about the regatta, its participants and landing ports. A point where cultures from all over the world converge, it was easy to distinguish among the crowd our crew members from Punta del Este, who, with their great team spirit and relationship with the public, won the sympathy of the visitors.

Este and manages to convey to his team the passion and discipline necessary for those who will face such an incredible challenge.

The Uruguayan participants in this first leg, Mr Darío Rodríguez and Fernando Antía, represent our country with great care and we are pleased to tell you that they have already received numerous praise for both their human quality and their skills as navigators.

THE ACTIVITIES It was a week of much activity around the pier. The boats were open to the public for visits, in addition to the special program for Partners of the regatta. The commercial part was one of the high points among the activities that this regatta has, and the Clipper Connect Business Series 2019-20 was developed, a networking event in which it interacts with people from the commercial or business area from all parts of the world and it is repeated in almost all the ports that the regatta makes a stopover, encouraging trade between both the “Race Partners” (global sponsors of the Clipper Race, who were the speakers), the Host Ports and the Team Partners.

El YCPE también participó del Partners Forum, representado por las señoras Lucina Gercar y Susana Nunes de Lestido. En éste los Partners de la regata se reunieron para dar a conocer sus objetivos al asociarse con la Clipper Race y conocer cómo se puede utilizar el evento como una valiosa plataforma para alcanzarlos.

El 31 de agosto a la noche tuvimos el placer de participar de la Celebration Dinner, la cual se llevó a cabo en el último piso del Leadenhall Building, con espectaculares vistas de la ciudad. Fue una grata sorpresa encontrar dibujados en los vidrios los puertos de recalada de la regata, con Punta del Este representado por sus veleros, edificios y la icónica escultura de La Mano.

El CEO de Clipper Race, Sr. Willam Ward OBE, agradeció a los presentes, destacando que más allá de los negocios, los partners de Clipper se han convertido en verdaderas amistades.

Mencionó también cómo ha crecido la regata, tanto en número de patrocinadores como de tripulantes, con más de 40 nacionalidades participando actualmente.

The YCPE also participated in the Partners Forum, represented by Lucina Gercar and Susana Nunes de Lestido. In this one, the Partners of the regatta met to publicize their objectives by partnering with the Clipper Race and learn how the event can be used as a valuable platform to achieve them.

On August 31 at night we had the pleasure of participating in the Celebration Dinner, which was held on the top floor of the Leadenhall Building, with spectacular views of the city.

It was a pleasant surprise to find the landing ports of the regatta drawn on the glass, with Punta del Este represented by its sailboats, buildings and the iconic sculpture of The Hand.

Clipper Race CEO, Mr Willam Ward OBE, thanked those present, noting that beyond business, Clipper partners have become true friends. He also mentioned how the regatta has grown, both in the number of sponsors and crew, with more than 40 nationalities currently participating.

La largada

The start

El 1º de setiembre se realizó la ceremonia de largada de la regata. Una multitud recorría St. Katharine Docks desde la mañana, familiares y amigos que venían a despedir a los tripulantes, partners de la regata, medios de prensa y el público en general colmaron los muelles y sus alrededores.

A las 13:45 comenzó la ceremonia y tras unas palabras de Sir Robin Knox-Johnston y William Ward OBE, las tripulaciones pasaron una por una para la foto grupal. Con mucha energía y al ritmo de “Vivir la vida” pasaron los tripulantes del Punta del Este, llevando orgullosamente el pabellón nacional y también nuestro gallardete.

A las 15:00 los barcos comenzaron a soltar amarras de a uno, siendo el primer barco el Punta del Este, partiendo con alegría mientras el público los despedía dando ánimo. Una vez que los 11 barcos salieron de St. Katharine Docks y se formaron en el Támesis, la delegación del YCPE se embarcó en uno de los barcos de espectadores que acompañaron a la flota por el río. Allí pudimos observar cómo se levantaba el Tower Bridge para dar paso al desfile de la flota, tras el cual largaron encabezados por el soleado Punta del Este. ¡Les deseamos buenos vientos y el mayor éxito!

On September 1, the race start ceremony was held. A crowd toured St. Katharine Docks from the morning, family and friends who came to say goodbye to the crew, race partners, media and the general public filled the docks and their surroundings.

At 13:45 the ceremony began and after a few words from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and William Ward OBE, the crews passed one by one for the group photo. With a lot of energy and the rhythm of “Living life” the crew of Punta del Este passed, proudly wearing the national pavilion and also our pennant.

At 15:00 the boats began to drop one by one, the first ship being Punta del Este, leaving with joy while the public said goodbye. Once the 11 ships left St. Katharine Docks and formed in the Thames, the YCPE delegation embarked on one of the spectator ships that accompanied the fleet along the river. There we could observe how the Tower Bridge was erected to give way to the fleet parade, after which they started headed by the sunny Punta del Este.

¡Primeros en Portimão!

Es un gran orgullo que nuestro barco Punta del Este fuera el primero en cruzar la línea de meta en Portimao, Portugal, después de recorrer 1.200 millas náuticas desde Londres, llegando a la ciudad de Algarvia a las 00:45:22 UTC. En segundo lugar se ubicó el Dare To Lead y tercero fue el Qingdao. ¡Felicitaciones!

Los once equipos enfrentaron duras condiciones de navegación, con cargas de viento fuerte con ráfagas de hasta 30 nudos mientas navegaban por la costa sur del Reino Unido, el Golfo Vizcaya y el Cabo Finesterre.

First to arrive in Portimao!

It is great pride that our ship Punta del Este was the first to cross the finish line in Portimao, Portugal, after travelling 1,200 nautical miles from London, arriving in the city of Algarve at 00:45:22 UTC. In second place was Dare To Lead and third was Qingdao. Congratulations!

The eleven teams faced harsh sailing conditions, with strong wind loads with gusts of up to 30 knots while sailing along the southern coast of the United Kingdom, the Bay of Biscay and Cape Finisterre.

The race director, Mark Light, said: “The Clipper Race 2019-20 has had a great start with a fantastic first race to Portimão. Huge congratulations to Punta del Este, who have proven to be the best gunners after Regatta 1 with a brilliant victory in Portimão, a great performance! ” The Punta del Este skipper, Jerónimo Santos González, said: “It has been a bit challenging, but it feels amazing. My team has worked very hard and I am super happy about this first feat. I think the big moment was when we passed Finisterre. We strive both day and night, day and night. We won the Ocean Sprint and that kept us focused. Winning the first race has motivated the entire Punta del Este team and it is an honour to integrate the team that congratulated them on their victory.”

Maridajes FRUTOS DE MAR CON SALSA CÍTRICA Y QUINOA

TARTA TRES CHOCOLATES

Combinar mariscos, que son significativamente salinos y de textura firme, nos propone el reto de encontrar un vino que pueda transmitir y potenciar esa sensación en la copa. Elegimos para esta ocasión un Bouza Riesling 2016, originario de los viñedos de Pan de Azúcar, fiel a su tipicidad y a las características de su suelo.

El chocolate es un producto extraordinario en la Patisserie y de alto protagonismo culinario. Tiene sabores muy complejos pero también los tiene simples o con matices, por eso su maridaje debe seguir ciertas pautas, teniendo en cuenta las materias grasas, azúcares y taninos que comparten con el vino.

Nos encontramos con un vino fresco, vivaz, mineral y que posee un amplio abanico de aromas que van desde los azahares y los frutos de carozo hasta encantadoras reminiscencias empetroladas. Esto, unido a la opulencia de los elementos aromáticos del plato y de su sabor, convierte a este vino muy expresivo en un gran acompañante para el marisco oceánico.

Garzón Reserva Tannat 2015. Este auténtico exponente del Tannat uruguayo es uno de los vinos más representativos de la bodega. La cosecha 2015 es –para muchos enólogos– una de las más destacadas de los últimos 15 años.

Su madurez nos brinda un color granate brillante acompañado de cautivantes notas florales, frutos negros maduros y de gran carácter especiado, tostados y chocolate. Su entrada en boca es dulce, brindándonos taninos aterciopelados y francos gustativamente.

De esta forma, dejamos de lado lo controversial de maridar chocolate con vino tinto, ya que se creía que eran enemigos el uno del otro debido a las características organolépticas que ambos poseen. No me resisto a maridarlos y puedo asegurarles que se logran casamientos muy interesantes.

En este caso ofreceremos un maridaje de similitud en el cual se combinan aromas frutales y tostados presentes en el retrogusto de ambos, potenciando taninos amables y mejorando sus características.

Pairings FRUITS OF SEA WITH CITRUS SAUCE AND QUINOA Combining shellfish, which are saline and firm texture variables, offers us the challenge of finding a wine that can transmit and enhance that sensation in the glass. We chose for this occasion a Bouza Riesling 2016, originally from the Sugar Loaf vineyards, presented its typicality and the characteristics of its soil.

We find a fresh, vivacious, mineral wine that has a wide range of aromas that range from orange blossoms and carozo fruits to lovely, speckled reminiscences.

This, together with the opulence of the aromatic elements of the dish and its flavor, makes this very expressive wine a great companion for oceanic seafood.

THREE CHOCOLATE CAKE Chocolate is an extraordinary product in the bakery and of high culinary importance. It has very complex flavors but also has simple or nuances, so its pairing must follow certain guidelines, taking into account the fatty substances, sugars, and tannins that are specific to wine.

Garzón Reserva Tannat 2015. This authentic exponent of Uruguayan Tannat is one of the most representative wines of the winery. The 2015 harvest is - for many winemakers - one of the most prominent in the last 15 years.

Its maturity gives us a bright garnet color accompanied by captivating floral notes, ripe black fruits, and spicy, roasted and chocolate. Its mouthfeel is sweet, giving us velvety tannins and frankly taste.

In this way, we put aside the controversial of matching chocolate with red wine, since it was believed that they were enemies of each other due to the organoleptic characteristics that both had. I can’t resist pairing them and I can guarantee those very interesting marriages are achieved.

In this case, we will offer a similarity pairing in which fruit and roasted aromas are combined in the aftertaste of both, enhancing friendly tannins and improving their characteristics.

ruguay es un pequeño país ubicado entre el paralelo 30° y 35° de latitud sur, la misma latitud en la que se encuentran –por ejemplo– Argentina, Chile, Australia o Sudáfrica. O sea, una ubicación geográfica muy propicia para la plantación de viñedos y la elaboración de vinos de alta calidad.

Se pueden encontrar viñedos a lo largo y ancho del territorio, todos ellos ofreciendo terruños bien diferentes y variedades adaptadas a cada tipo de suelo y clima. El resultado: una amplia gama de estilos que abarca a vinos blancos, rosados, tintos, espumosos y licorosos.

Actualmente, unas 6.000 hectáreas repartidas entre 170 bodegas familiares producen –dependiendo del año– entre 65 y 70 millones de litros de vino de alta calidad enológica.

En la zona Sudoeste se encuentra la mayor parte de los viñedos y bodegas, zona en la cual los primeros colonos se instalaron y de ahí en más comenzó toda la historia. Estos viñedos cuentan con una importante influencia del Río de la Plata, el cual

afecta saludablemente la maduración y sanidad de la uva. Es una región de topografía ondulada y suelos que van desde los granitos rosas a los limosos o arcillosos, donde se logran grandes expresiones de Merlot, Tannat y variedades blancas como Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño y Chardonnay, entre otras. Vinos elegantes y equilibrados.

En el Norte la temperaturas son más altas, con un clima templado, suelos pobres y profundos, clima seco y con muchas horas de sol, la cual favorece al desarrollo de aromas y la maduración óptima de variedades tardías tales como el Cabernet Sauvignon o el Tannat. Los vinos de esta zona logran un potencial alcohólico y aromático un poco mayor que los del resto del país.

La zona Este está en pleno auge emergente, donde bodegas tradicionales se han instalado acompañadas de nuevos y pujantes emprendimientos. Posee un suelo granítico y arenoso de muy buen drenaje y permeabilidad, en el cual las plantas logran atraer toda esa mineralidad y aportársela a la uva.

El clima marítimo funciona como un regulador natural de la temperatura; la brisa del mar logra que estas no sean tan elevadas –lo que favorece a la lenta y óptima maduración de la uva– logrando vinos aromáticos de menor graduación alcohólica. Se destacan las variedades Tannat, Pinot Noir, Albariño o Sauvignon Blanc, entre otras.

LOS RESULTADOS DE COMBINAR TRADICIÓN E INNOVACIÓN Esta evolución no solo está marcada por los cambios de la reconversión vitivinícola. Además de la modernización de maquinaria y la experimentación de nuevos cultivos adaptados a nuestro terroir, también está marcada por tres generaciones de bodegueros que han estado al frente de sus respectivos emprendimientos, cada uno brindando su conocimiento y adaptándolo a la actividad vitivinícola actual.

Las bodegas se han trasformado y no solo están abocadas a la elaboración del vino: también reciben visitas y ofrecen exclusivos restaurantes y hospedajes, entre otras atracciones. El concepto “Enoturismo” se ha puesto en marcha y ya es parte del desarrollo vital del segmento.

El vino es nuestra bebida nacional y el Tannat nuestra cepa insignia. Los invito a degustarla, a ver su transformación, desde los jóvenes bien profundos en color y vivaces en aromas a fruta negra, hasta los maduros de sutiles aromas y taninos firmes y amables. Vivan la experiencia de probar vinos uruguayos.

El Uruguay vitivinícola está siempre en transformación, ofreciendo una diversidad de vinos más que interesante. Cada celebración es una oportunidad única para degustar un vino uruguayo. ¡Salud!

Un memorable privilegio personal “En marzo de 1997, una noticia recorrió el mundo: uno de los cañones del mítico HMS Agamemnon, hundido en 1809, había sido recuperado del fondo de la bahía de Maldonado (Uruguay). La ubicación exacta de los restos del barco fue el desenlace de una larga investigación y los datos aportados por Anthony Deane, entonces comodoro del Yacht Club Punta del Este, fueron decisivos para identificar el naufragio.

Horacio Nelson asumió como capitán del Agamemnon en 1793 y desde ese momento lo consideró “sin excepción, el mejor en servicio”. einte años después de aquella noticia, del 17 al 21 de abril de 2017, asistí como parte de mi instrucción, a un Training Course de especialización dictado por la Fundación OLAS (Latin American Underwater Alliance, USA) y la NAS (Nautical Archaeology Society, UK) que se realizó en la ciudad de Punta del Este, Uruguay, con el patrocinio de la UNESCO y el Sistema Nacional de Museos Uruguay.

Al mismo tiempo, y aprovechando la reunión de tantos científicos en el lugar, la National Geographic Society realizó un documental sobre el estado actual de uno de los naufragios más importantes de los muchos que ocurrieron en la Bahía de Maldonado. El del H.M.S. Agamemnon.

A memorable personal privilege “In March 1997, a story travelled the world: one of the canyons of the mythical HMS Agamemnon, sunk in 1809, had been recovered from the bottom of Maldonado Bay (Uruguay). The exact location of the ship’s wreckage was the outcome of a long investigation and the data provided by Anthony Deane, then commodore of the Yacht Club Punta del Este were instrumental in identifying the wreck.

Horacio Nelson assumed as captain of the Agamemnon in 1793 and from that moment he considered him “without exception, the best in service.” Attached to the ship for countless feats - and perhaps for having landed in the Bay of Naples towards the first encounter with Emma, Lady Hamilton - Agamemnon was always Nelson’s favourite.” (1)

El día 25 de abril de 2017, al desembarcar en la Isla Gorriti, los miembros del equipo nos dirigimos cada quien a desarrollar su respectiva tarea asignada durante las reuniones previas y, debido a ello, en pocos minutos ya no estaría a la vista de nadie. Por este motivo, se decidió establecer una hora para reunirnos nuevamente en el muelle a fin de no distraerse de la única posibilidad de embarcar de regreso hacia puerto de Punta del Este.

Entonces, utilizando mi detector de metales, con expresa autorización y a solicitud del Msc. Alejo Cordero, a cargo del Departamento de Arqueología y Comisión Del Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación, encuentro en una de las playas de la isla lo que –de acuerdo a las señales indicadas en el detector– debiera corresponder a una pieza de hierro

cuyas medidas aproximadas llegarían a unos 2,50 metros. Además consideré que el artefacto (para entonces sin excavar y por completo oculto a la vista), insinuaba las formas de una pieza de artillería orientada hacia el sur. ¿Podría tratarse de alguna de las piezas de artillería que se menciona en las crónicas del naufragio del H.M.S. Agamemnon? De ser así, este cañón contaría con una trascendente carga histórica, pues habría formado parte de la dotación del navío de línea británico que fuera favorito del vicealmirante y máximo héroe naval británico; Vizconde Horatio Nelson. En la bitácora del referido navío, se asentaron acciones de enormes consecuencias históricas como las guerras revolucionarias francesas, la batalla de Copenhague, la batalla del Nilo y otras, pero prin-

wenty years after that news, from April 17 to 21, 2017, I attended as part of my instruction, a specialization Training Course taught by the OLAS Foundation (Latin American Underwater Alliance, USA) and the NAS (Nautical Archeology Society, UK) which was held in the city of Punta del Este, Uruguay, with the sponsorship of UNESCO and the National Museum System Uruguay.

At the same time, and taking advantage of the meeting of so many scientists in the place, the National Geographic Society made a documentary about the current state of one of the most important shipwrecks of the many that occurred in Maldonado Bay. The H.M.S. Agamemnon.

On April 25, 2017, upon disembarking on

Gorriti Island, the team members each directed us to develop their respective assigned tasks during previous meetings and, due to this, in a few minutes it would no longer be visible to anyone. For this reason, it was decided to establish a time to meet again at the dock so as not to distract from the only possibility of embarking back to the port of Punta del Este.

Then, using my metal detector, with express authorization and at the request of the MSc. Alejo Cordero, in charge of the Department of Archeology and Commission of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation, I find in one of the beaches of the island what - according to the signals indicated in the detector should correspond to a piece of iron whose approximate measurements they would reach about 2.50 meters.

I also considered that the artifact (by then without digging and completely hidden from view), hinted at the shapes of a south-facing artillery piece.

Could it be one of the artillery pieces mentioned in the chronicles of the wreck of H.M.S. Agamemnon? If so, this cannon would have a transcendent historical load, since it would have been part of the endowment of the British line ship that was a favorite of the Vice-Admiral and top British naval hero; Viscount Horatio Nelson. In the logbook of the aforementioned ship, actions of enormous historical consequences were settled, such as the French Revolutionary Wars, the Battle of Copenhagen, the Battle of the Nile and others, but mainly, the Battle of Trafalgar (October 21, 1805).

Incluso y de ex profeso ni siquiera llevé una pala conmigo. Por lo cual y hasta no retirar el material que ocultaba la pieza, todo remitía a mi experiencia personal.

Once this tempting hypothesis was detected, I proceeded to indicate on the beach sand both the site and its dimensions and the direction in which the supposed artifact points, in order to record all these data photographically next to their geographical coordinates.

After gathering this information, I personally announced the good news to Dr. Lorena Palacio at the time of meeting on board the ferry and, later that night, to Alejo Cordero and Valerio Buffa, archaeologists in charge of this campaign.

21 days later and after numerous failed attempts to navigate back to the island for climatic reasons, I finally embarked with the tools required to perform the survey of the signal registered with the metal detector. During all that time I reviewed in my mind, again and again, the information communicated to the scientists, because although I was convinced that I had found a cannon, I probably should not have asserted it and perhaps it was precipitated from me to communicate it so categorically since that day I did not dig the signal. Even as expressly I didn’t even carry a shovel with me. So and until I removed the material that hid the piece, everything referred to my personal experience.

Once back at the place, I found that the sea had almost completely moved the sand that previously covered and concealed the detected piece, so the illusion went into context.

encontré que el mar había trasladado casi por completo la arena que antes cubría y ocultaba la pieza detectada, por lo cual la ilusión pasó a contexto.

Es algo probable que esta circunstancia se haya repetido numerosas veces durante los pasados 208 años, luego que el cañón fuera abandonado en la rompiente; por lo que podemos suponer la alternancia de ciclos en el cual el artefacto haya quedado expuesto y a la vista o –por el contrario– sepultado

It is somewhat probable that this circumstance has been repeated numerous times during the past 208 years after the cannon was abandoned in the break; so we can assume the alternation of cycles in which the device has been exposed and at sight or - on the contrary - buried and hidden under a cover of sand.

But if we add to this presumption the small number of visitors that the island receives on this specific site because it is separated from the traditional tourist route, the chances of its existence being known are significantly reduced.

But even so, those who might have

Pero si a esta presunción le añadimos el reducido número de visitantes que recibe la isla en este sitio específico por encontrarse apartado del recorrido turístico tradicional, las posibilidades de que se conociera su existencia se reducen notablemente. Pero aun así, aquellos que eventualmente pudieran haberle notado difícilmente imaginarían que este cañón en particular tiene un origen muy distinto a los otros que en gran número pueden encontrarse diseminados por las 21 hectáreas de la isla.

Lo primero que advertimos al verle ahora expuesto es que –según lo aventuré– el mismo es en efecto de hierro y su boca apunta casi directamente al sur.

Una inspección más detallada revela que dicho cañón se encuentra dado vuelta. En otras palabras, su parte superior, donde podríamos esperar encontrar algún grabado o inscripción y su correspondiente oído, está oculta a la vista por quedar enterrada y hacia abajo. Hubiera sido necesario darle vuelta con la ayuda de un par de robustas palancas y, aunque si me lo hubiera propuesto posiblemente lograría volcarle, opté por no intentar modificar el estado actual del artefacto, dejando la decisión de la intervención a criterio de los científicos. Entonces, mi tarea se restringió a constatar que la suposición del hallazgo de un cañón fuera acertada y a registrar fotográficamente sus diferentes medidas, calibre y posibles detalles.

De este relevamiento surge que uno de sus muñones se encuentra roto, lo que nos permite arriesgar que éste debe habérseles quebrado a los propios marinos durante las maniobras de rescate y al momento de descargarlo de la chalana, pues de otra forma, si se encontraba quebrado desde antes, es lógico suponer que se hubieran ahorrado el poco tiempo del que disponían y le hubieran dejado a bordo del navío que zozobraba. Esta observación naturalmente explica que optaran finalmente por abandonarle luego del riesgo que significó rescatarle del naufragio y aún cuando ya lo tenían sobre la playa.

La medición del diámetro del ánima

(dato que revela el calibre del arma) arroja una medida de 12,5 centímetros, muy similar a las requeridas en un arma de calibre de a 18 libras. Al comparar los registros de la Royal Navy, encontramos que el ánima de una pieza de artillería de a 18 libras debe medir 5.04 pulgadas, que equivalen a 12,8 centímetros. Esta diferencia en el ánima se explica porque la medida actual se encuentra reducida a consecuencia de la corrosión del metal, tras quedar dos siglos expuesto al ambiente marino.

El H.M.S. Agamemnon estaba armado con 64 cañones, 26 de ellos eran como este, habiendo 13 en cada banda de la segunda cubierta.

Tras la batalla de Trafalgar, el Agamemnon regresó a Inglaterra para la revisión general de rutina. Durante tales revisiones los cañones eran usualmente reemplazados en el arsenal de Woolwich. Dado que la vida útil de un cañón no se mide en años, sino en la cantidad de veces que fue disparado, es de suponer que luego de la batalla de Trafalgar éstos se hubieran desembarcado para proceder a reemplazarles por otros nuevos. Sin embargo, cuando se consultan los archivos en el arsenal de Woolwich, descubrimos que tanto el listado de cañones como otros detalles registrados cuando ingresó el navío a revisión, son por completo idénticos a los que portaba cuando salió. En otras palabras, su armamento no se reemplazó y desde aquel momento el Agamemnon no se presentó a ninguna otra revisión.

En resumen, no quedan dudas con respecto al origen de este cañón y ello incluso nos indica el sitio donde según la investigación documental se encontrarían otros cuatro cañones de la misma procedencia, abandonados a corta distancia bajo el agua por motivos que se intentarán determinar en futuras campañas.

Un hecho que merece destacarse respecto de estos cañones del Agamemnon es que se trata de los únicos que actualmente se sabe –a ciencia cierta– que participaron en Trafalgar.

Los cañones de hierro, a diferencia de los de bronce, sufrían gran deterioro debido a su continua exposición al ambiente marino durante las prolongadas singladuras de la flota y tras ser disparados continuamente en combate, se los substituía a su regreso a Inglaterra para verificar su operatividad.

Esta táctica tenía por finalidad la de constatar que las piezas de artillería continuaran siendo seguras de disparar tras la reconocida cadencia de fuego en la Royal Navy. Hoy nos referiríamos

Según los registros históricos, todos los cañones utilizados en Trafalgar fueron eventualmente fundidos en algún momento para reutilizar su metal a medida que el armamento fue resultando obsoleto, o bien terminaron en el fondo del mar dentro de sus respectivos navíos. No obstante, sabemos que estos cañones en particular son una increíble excepción.

De los 64 cañones que transportaba, 18 se registraron como rescatados del naufragio por la propia Royal Navy en los días siguientes al accidente. De manera que los que aún permanecen en el pecio son los únicos cañones ingleses que fehacientemente participaron en la batalla que cambió el rumbo de la historia.

noticed it would hardly imagine that this particular canyon has a very different origin from the others that in large numbers can be found scattered throughout the 21 hectares of the island.

The first thing we notice when we see it now exposed is that - as I ventured it - it’s, in fact, iron. And its mouth points almost directly to the south.

A more detailed inspection reveals that the barrel is turned. In other words, its upper part, where we could expect to find some engraving or inscription and its corresponding ear, is hidden from view by being buried and down.

It would have been necessary to turn it over with the help of a pair of sturdy levers and, although if I had proposed it, I would possibly be able to dump it, I chose not to try to modify the current state of the device, leaving the decision of the intervention at the discretion of the scientists.

Then, my task was restricted to verifying that the assumption of the finding of a cannon was successful and to photographically photograph its different measures, size, and possible details.

From this survey it appears that one of its stumps is broken, which allows us to risk that it must have been broken by the sailors themselves during the rescue maneuvers and at the time of unloading it from the barge, otherwise, if it was broken from before, it is logical to suppose that they had saved the little time they had and left it aboard the ship that capsized. This observation naturally explains that they finally chose to abandon it after the risk of rescuing it from the shipwreck and even when they already had it on the beach.

H.M.S. Agamemnon was armed with 64 guns, 26 of them were like this, with 13 in each band of the second deck.

In summary, there are no doubts regarding the origin of this canyon and this even indicates the place where, according to the documentary investigation, four other canyons of the same origin would be found, abandoned a short distance underwater for reasons that will be determined in future bells.

A fact that deserves to be highlighted regarding these canyons of the Agamemnon is that they are the only ones currently known - for sure - who participated in Trafalgar.

The iron cannons, unlike those of bronze, suffered great deterioration due to their continuous exposure to the marine environment during the prolonged bursts of the fleet and after being fired continuously in combat, they were replaced upon their return to England to verify their operability. The purpose of this tactic was to verify that the artillery pieces continue to be safe to fire after the recognized rate of fire in the Royal Navy.

Today we would refer to this issue with the name of “material fatigue”.

According to historical records, all the canyons used in Trafalgar were eventually melted at some time to

reuse their metal as the armament became obsolete, or ended up at the bottom of the sea within their respective vessels. However, we know that these particular cannons are an incredible exception.

After the battle of Trafalgar, the Agamemnon returned to England for the general routine review. During such reviews, the guns were usually replaced in Woolwich’s arsenal. Since the life of a cannon is not measured in years, but in the number of times it was fired, it is assumed that after the battle of Trafalgar they would have landed to proceed to replace them with new ones. However, when the files in Woolwich’s arsenal are consulted, we discover that both the list of cannons and other details recorded when the ship was entered for review are completely identical to the ones it carried when it left. In other words, its armament was not replaced and since that time the Agamemnon did not submit to any other revision.

Of the 64 guns it carried, 18 were registered as rescued from the wreck by the Royal Navy itself in the days following the accident. So those who still remain in the wreck are the only English cannons that reliably participated in the battle that changed the course of history.

The bore diameter measurement (data that reveals the caliber of the weapon) yields a measurement of 12.5 centimeters, very similar to those required in an 18-pound caliber weapon. When comparing the Royal Navy records, we found that the bore of an 18-pound artillery piece should measure 5.04 inches, which equals 12.8 centimeters.

This difference in the bore is explained because the current measure is reduced as a result of metal corrosion, after being exposed to the marine environment for two centuries.
