Estimados Socios: El final de cada año de trabajo representa una etapa de reflexión y balance. Para los integrantes de la Comisión Directiva y para este Comodoro es un honor dirigirnos a los consocios del YCPE con el fin de rendir cuentas de lo actuado e informar sobre nuevos proyectos y actividades.

Estamos satisfechos de haber logrado mantener una importante y constante actividad durante todo el ejercicio anual. Pero, el inicio de cada temporada de verano para quienes disfrutamos de Punta del Este representa renovados desafíos. Por un lado y quizá lo principal, el de conservar los máximos estándares de excelencia y por otro avanzar con nuevos desafíos.

Desde el 13 de enero próximo seremos nuevamente los anfitriones de la regata ROLEX CIRCUITO ATLÁNTICO SUR en la que esperamos la participación de más de ochenta embarcaciones, que -como es habitual- generará un espectáculo deportivo de alto nivel en la mejor cancha de regatas del continente, la Bahía de Maldonado. Como co-organizadores de la Regata con el YACHT CLUB ARGENTINO pondremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para que resulte un éxito, aportando servicios, personal calificado de nuestro varadero, embarcaciones de apoyo y árbitros.

Al respecto, con la generosidad del sponsor principal se han renovado y renegociado, en forma ventajosa para todas las partes, las condiciones contractuales proyectando la continuidad del evento para los próximos años,

así como la modernización conforme tendencias y formatos internacionales en la programación de las regatas que las hará más atractivas para los participantes.

También estamos avanzando con el necesario apoyo de las autoridades departamentales, nacionales y de sponsors, en la designación nuevamente de la ciudad de Punta del Este, como puerto anfitrión de la próxima edición de la Regata CLIPPER RACE ROUND THE WORLD. Para ello contamos con el beneplácito de los organizadores del evento quienes han expresado reiteradamente su reconocimiento para con el YCPE por el entusiasmo y hospitalidad con el que se ha recibido a los navegantes. Todas estas actividades han generado una significativa proyección internacional al Club y a la ciudad, con menciones en medios de comunicación de todo el mundo.

Como efecto adicional, hemos aprobado nuevos acuerdos de reciprocidad con clubes de alto nivel en el mundo, como el de Porto Rotondo y Costa Esmeralda que se agregan a una larga lista que se encuentra a disposición de los socios en la Administración del Club.

Cabe destacar que durante el mes de enero, un equipo del YCPE con su instructor, participará -al igual que en la edición del año pasado- de una regata organizada por el YACHT CLUB DE MÓNACO. Esta actividad, que es una experiencia única para nuestros pequeños navegantes, es el resultado

Dear Members: The end of each year of work represents a moment of reflection and assessment.

For the members of the Board of Directors and for this Commodore it is an honour to address YCPE´s members in order to give account of what has been done and inform about the new projects and activities.

We are pleased to have accomplished maintaining an important and constant activity throughout the year. But, the start of each summer season for those of us who enjoy Punta del Este represents new challenges. On one side -and probably the most important- keeping the high standards of excellence, and on the other, taking on new challenges.

From this January 13 we will be hosting once again The ROLEX South Atlantic Cup for which we are expecting the participation of over 80 boats, that - as usual- will generate a high level sportive spectacle in the best racing course of the continent, the Bay of Maldonado. As coorganisers of this Race with the YACHT CLUB ARGENTINO we will make our best effort to make this a success, providing service, qualified staff from our shipyard, boats and umpires. In that matter, with the main sponsor´s generosity we have renewed and re-negotiated, in an advantageous way for all parties, the contractual conditions projecting the continuity of the event for the next years, as well as the modernisation in view of the new tendencies and international formats for programming races, which will make them more appealing for participants.

Estimados Socios: de un convenio vigente otorgado entre los clubes y por el cual también sus competidores como reciprocidad han participado activamente y con excelentes resultados de regatas de esta clase en Punta del Este. Estamos explorando en conjunto la posibilidad de ampliar la cooperación entre las entidades.

Hemos programado la también ya frecuente -y que cada vez cobra más relevancia- Regata de Veleros Clásicos; y, asimismo una vasta actividad para la todas las demás clases con que contamos y para la Escuela de Vela, calendarios que pueden consultase en el sitio web del Club y que recibirán a través de la frecuente Newsletter.

El objetivo de esta Comisión Directiva continuará bajo la consigna de una adecuada utilización de los recursos, medios materiales y de los servicios, siempre guardando equilibrio entre las áreas de aprendizaje, competencia, pesca y navegación social.

En el área social, los días lunes de los meses de enero y febrero nos honrarán con su exposición conferencistas de altísimo nivel quienes ya han comprometido su asistencia y se han proyectado actividades en conjunto con Conciertos del Este sobre las que tenemos amplias expectativas en su éxito.

El rumbo es claro y el potencial del YCPE -determinado por la fantástica naturaleza de su ubicación- es extraordinario.

We are also making progress with the support of local and national authorities, and sponsors, in designating once more the city of Punta del Este as Host Port Partner for the next edition of the CLIPPER RACE ROUND THE WORLD. To do so, we have received the approval from the organisers of the event, who have continuously expressed their appreciation for YCPE, for the enthusiasm and hospitality shown to the sailors last year. All these activities have generated an important projection of the Club -and City- internationally, mentioned in the media worldwide.

In addition, we have approved new reciprocity agreements with first class clubs all over the world, such as Porto Rotondo and Costa Smeralda, added to a long list, which is at our members´ disposition in the Club´s office.

It´s worth mentioning that next January, an Optimist team from YCPE and their Coach will be participating -as in last year´s edition- in a team race competition organised by the YACHT CLUB DE MONACO. This activity, which constitutes a unique experience for our youngest sailors, is the result of the present agreement established between both Clubs, reason why their competitors have also participated -with excellent results- in championships of this kind in Punta del Este. We are currently exploring the possibility of increasing the cooperation between the institutions.

Furthermore, we have scheduled the already frequent Classic Week -that keeps increasing in relevance- and many more activities involving the other categories

and our Sailing School. The calendar can be found in the Club´s website and will be received by our regular Newsletter.

It is this Board of Directors’ goal to continue working in the efficient employment of resources, materials and services, safeguarding the balance between the areas of learning, competition, fishing and recreational sailing.

In the social calendar, every Monday during January and February we will be honoured with the conferences of outstanding speakers who have already confirmed their participation, and we have organised events with Conciertos del Este with high hopes for their success amongst our members.

The course is clear and YCPE’s potential - determined by the fantastic nature of its location- is extraordinary.

Muchas gracias por su hospitalidad. ¿Cuándo y cómo supo sobre Punta del Este?

Conozco Punta desde hace muchos años, porque todo el mundo dice que es el Saint-Tropez de América Latina.

Así que leí sobre Punta y José Ignacio y luego hablé con mis vecinos cercanos a mi apartamento. Tenemos una chacra

aquí, en Laguna del Sauce. Se llama San Antonio. Ellos dijeron: tienes que ir a Punta, es maravilloso, ¡fantástico! Creo que vine por primera vez hace unos 10 años. Poco tiempo después compré mi propiedad en Laguna del Sauce y también una casa en el Hotel Fasano. Pienso que con el viejo Pink Gin estuvimos aquí dos veces y ahora esta vez con el nuevo.

Thank you for your hospitality. When and how did you know about Punta del Este.

I know about Punta for many years beacause everybody says Punta del Este is Saint Tropez of Latin America. So I read about Punta and about Jose Igancio and then when I was talking to my neighbors next to my apartment.

We have a farm here, in Laguna del Sauce. Its name is San Antonio. They said: you have to go to Punta, it is “maravilloso”, it is fantastic!

¿Cuándo nació su pasión por navegar?

Cuando era niño. Comencé en un pequeño optimist y luego pasé a 420, 470 y 545. Entonces, en mis jóvenes 20 comencé a navegar botes más grandes, en Italia y Francia y seguí con spin yachts; creo que eran de 37, 50 y 70 pies. Luego compré mi primer gran barco Baltic. Era de 97 pies y luego el viejo Pink Gin –que estuvo aquí en Punta– era de 152.

Así que habrá corrido muchas regatas, me imagino.

Si, pero hoy solo paseamos. No corremos más. La última vez que corrimos fue la Super Yacht Cup en Palma de Mallorca hace algunos años y tuvimos suerte, porque nos dieron un gran handycup

En mi mente. Por supuesto que lo hablo con el Capitán y el dice“posible”o“difícil”.

Desde aquí iremos a Buenos Aires, luego al Caribe hasta Guadalupe, Martinica, Cuba y volvemos a Europa.

Entonces la mayoría son a su voluntad.

Si, somos puramente privados; navegamos con amigos. Podemos ir a Ibiza y luego a Rusia para ver el Mundial, nos encanta el fútbol. Somos amigos de Uruguay, no tanto de Argentina ¡y menos de Brasil! (risas). El invierno no lo hemos planeado aún. ¿Vive siempre en verano?

Cuando tenemos invierno en Europa ustedes tienen verano, así que tratamos

Facebook y YouTube, tomadas desde un drone. Es muy hermosa, puedes ver ambas costas. ¿Qué tripulación tiene y cómo los recluta?

Primero que nada, tienes que reclutar al Capitán; Oscar viene trabajando para mi desde hace años y ha conseguido su licencia, podemos ir hasta 500 toneladas.

Cumplirá 26 años y aún así es el capitán más joven del mundo en esta clase de barcos. Preparamos a jóvenes talentos en nuestro bote. Mi viejo Capitán, Henry, trabajó para mi durante 18 años, comenzó cuando tenía 28 años (también es catalán). Así que el capitán es el punto más importante porque siempre está conectado con el dueño ya que es el responsable de la seguridad y el personal.

Por supuesto, luego es muy importante tener un buen equipo para manejar el barco. Pero también pienso que el punto más crítico en un barco siempre serán las azafatas, porque si una mujer quiere hacer “la guerra”, tendrás guerra para todos. Es lo mismo que ocurre en América Latina con las “novias”.

Visitando grandes puertos durante tantos años, el nombre del barco se convierte en una marca y si el barco tiene una buena imagen y el dueño tiene una buena imagen, encontrarás buenas personas. Somos afortunados de tener un equipo top de diferentes países de origen: Sudáfrica, Gran Bretaña, España, Francia, Alemania. Tenemos un total de 8 personas.

y pudimos ganar. Luego dejamos de competir, ¡tienes que retirarte cuando estás en la cima! ¿Cuáles son los 3 lugares que más le gustan en el mundo?

En el agua, por supuesto Punta del Este.

Tengo que decir que me gusta Cerdeña y Costa Smeralda (Italia) y soy socio del Costa Smeralda Yacht Club. Realmente me encantan lugares como Saint-Tropez o Portofino, pero con el barco nos gusta ir a Nueva York. Hay muchos lugares hermosos en el mundo, especialmente cuando tienes la posibilidad de cruzar el océano en un yate. ¿Cómo define el itinerario anual del barco?

de seguir al verano con el barco. Y yo pienso en Punta del Este, Buenos Aires y la costa brasileña por el hecho de que hay más y más huracanes en el Caribe. Sé de varios amigos que tienen veleros más grandes que están viendo qué se puede hacer si van a Ilhabela o Ilha Grande en Brasil y venir a Punta del Este y luego ir a Buenos Aires, así que pienso que en el futuro verán grandes barcos por aquí.

Ya sabes, en el Caribe tienes el tema de los seguros y puede ser peligroso. Sabes que San Bartolomé y algunas de las islas son rozadas por el huracán así que pienso que verán más barcos grandes bajando hasta aquí. Y nosotros hacemos buen marketing porque hay una foto del Pink Gin en Punta del Este en nuestro

¿Qué tan seguido viene a Punta?

A veces vengo solo por dos o tres días para visitar mi casa y reunirme con amigos pero en verano venimos más seguido. Vengo por aquí todos los años.

Usted tiene la familia Pink Gin, siendo este el sexto. ¿Cuál es el significado del nombre y por qué sigue usando el mismo nombre en todos sus yates?

Esta es una historia por la que todo el mundo me pregunta, pero puedo decirte que es muy sencilla. Cuando tuve mi primer barco para navegar en los océanos tenía 23 años y a esa edad sueles cambiar de novia. El tiempo pasa y tú fácilmente pasas del amor al drama, así que no puedes repintar el barco cada año y darle un nuevo nombre. Así que estaba en un bar en Hamburgo,

eran las 3:00 de la mañana. Hablaba con uno de mis buenos amigos de la universidad; estábamos buscando un nombre. El barman, un veterano vestido de blanco, nos dijo:“amigos, tengo algo para usdetes: es un buen trago, pero los matará esta noche”. Dijimos “¡no, por favor no nos mate!”(risas). Así que puso gin, angostura y dijo que era un trago de marinos ingleses; su nombre: Pink Gin. Así que luego de tomar 5 pink gins, perdí la memoria de un día, desperté con un gran dolor de cabeza y pensé“es un buen nombre para el barco”. Es el nombre de un famoso trago de navegantes ingleses.

Muy buena historia. ¿Aún tiene los barcos anteriores?

No, los tuve que vender, cuestan mucho dinero. ¿Por qué navegar en un velero y no en un crucero?

Comencé navegando en veleros cuando era un niño pequeño y siempre amé las velas. En los yacht clubs todo el mundo sabe que hay dos tipos diferentes de personas: los que prefieren los grandes barcos a motor y aquellos que aman los veleros, la naturaleza, navegar por deporte; son dos mundos diferentes. ¿Tiene algún otro barco?

Aún tengo el barco a motor de mi familia, el “Sunny Day”. Fue construido hace 30 años en Santa Margarita, Liguria (Italia).

Usualmente está en Italia, aún lo conservamos para los niños y amigos. ¿Tiene algún hobby? ¿Hobbies? ¿Qué más puedo necesitar? (risas). Debo decir que el barco es el 90% de mis hobbies.

Cuéntenos sobre su récord Guinness.

Yo estaba sentado en el barco con Henry, mi viejo capitán. Estábamos hablando sobre que muchas veces estamos yendo a playas o islas donde no puedes alquilar un auto. Entonces dije: “deberíamos construir algo que pueda flotar en el agua –como un bote– y pueda ir a la playa y manejarse, como un auto”. Lo construimos y quedó en mi garaje, entonces dijimos “¿qué hacemos con esto?”. Alguien vino y dijo “Richard Branson tiene un récord Guinness por cruzar el canal en un auto anfibio”. Él es un hombre de negocios inglés que ama este tipo

I think I came here first time 10 years ago. Few years later I bought my property en Laguna del Sauce, and i also bought a house at Fasano Hotel. I think with the old Pink Gin we have been here twice (in Punta) and now we are coming with the new one.

When was your passion for sailing born?

My passion for sailing was born when I was a child. I started in a little optmist and later 420, 470 and 545. Then, in my early twenties, I started to sail bigger boats in Italy and France and continued with spin yachts; I think 37, 50, 70 feet and then I bought my first bigger Baltic boat. It was a 97 feet and then the old pink gin –which was here in Punta– was 152.

So you have run many races?

Yeah, but we do cruising today. We are not racing anymore. The last time we raced was the Super Yacht Cup in Palma de Mallorca some years ago and we were a little bit lucky because of the handicap they gave us, a really nice handicup so we won the cup and then we stop racing, you have to stop when you are on the top!

Tell us a top-3 places you like the most in the world.

On the water, of course Punta del Este, I have to say I like Cerdeña, and Costa Smeralda (Italy) and I am member of Costa Smeralda Yacht Club. I really like places like Saint Tropez or Portofino but also with the boat we like to go to New York. There are many nice places in the world, specially if you are able to cruze across the ocean with a boat.

How do you define the ship’s anual cruise itinerary?

In my brain. Of course I talk to the captain and he says “posible”or “difícil”. From here we are going to Buenos Aires, and then we are going up to the Caribbean: Guadalupe, Martinic, Cuba and then back to Europe.

Then most are at your will.

Yes, we are pure private, we sail with friends.

We may go to Ibiza, and then to Russia for the world cup; we love football. We are friends of Uruguay, not so much of Argentina, not so much of Brazil! (laughs). For the winter we have not yet planned.

Do you always live in summer?

When we have winter in Europe, you have summer, so we follow the summer a little bit with the boat. And I think about Punta del Este, Buenos Aires and the brazilian coast due to the fact there are more and more hurricans in the caribbean. I know from many friends who have bigger sailing boats that they are looking what can be done if you go to Ilhabela or Ilha Grande in Brazil and come down to Punta del Este and then go to buenos Aires, so I think we will see in the future much bigger boats.

You know, in the Caribbean you have the

insurance and it may be dangerous. You know that Saint Barthélemy and some of the islands are barely touched by the hurricane and I think you will see much more bigger sailing yachts coming down here. And we make nice marketing beacuse there is a picture of Pink Gin in Punta del Este in our Facebook and Youtube from a drone, its very nice, you can see both coasts.

How many crew do you have and how do you recruit them?

First of all, you have to recruit captain; Oscar was working for me for some years and now he has upgrated his licence, we can go up to 500 tons. He will become 26 years old, either he is still the world’s youngest captain in this kind of boat. We develop young talents in our boat. My old captain, Henry was working for me for 18 years, he started when he was 28 (he

is also “Catalán”). So the captain is the most important thing because the captain is always linked to the owner, because he is responsable for safety and personnel. Then of course, i think is really important to have a good crew to handle the boat beacuse it is a sailing boat and we have a lot of loads and everything. But I also think the most critical point on a boat will always be stweardesses, beacause if a woman wants to make “la guerra” (war) you have “guerra para todos”. It’s the same I think in Latin America: las “novias” (girlfriends).

By visiting big ports for so many years the boat’s name becomes a brand and if the boat has a good image and the owner has a good image, you will find good people. We are lucky that we have a top team from many different countries; from South Africa, Great Britain, Spain, France, Germany. We have a total of 8 people.

Mi Porsche Targa. Está en mi casa. ¿Tiene avión?

Si, tengo. Es un Bombardier que está aquí en el aeropuerto de Punta del Este.

Usualmente venimos vía Cuba, luego vamos a Río de Janeiro porque tenemos una casa en Santa Teresa. Así que volaremos de regreso desde Buenos Aires y haremos algunas paradas por negocios. ¿Ha cruzado el océano en el barco?

Siendo mucho más joven hice entre 3 y 5 cruzadas con el viejo Pink Gin, pero cruzar el Atlántico (Oscar lo sabe) puede ser muy aburrido si no hay viento, es como un lago. Pero puede ser terrible si tienes demasiado viento ¡mejor quédate en casa! Puedes hacerlo una o dos veces en tu vida, para tu ego. Y ya está. ¿Cuál ha sido la donación que más lo emocionó?

Quizás deba mencionar dos cosas: la primera, haber creado un refugio para niños de familias con problemas en Alemania, en mi ciudad natal Duderstadt. Hospedamos a 500 niños

How often do you come to Punta del Este?

Sometimes I come here just for two or three days to look after my house and meet some friends and now in the summer we are coming more often. I come here every year.

You have a Pink Gin family, this one is the sixth. What is the meaning of this name and why do you keep using the same name for all your boats?

That is a story that everybody asks me, but I can tell you, it is very simple. When I got my first boat to sail in the oceans I was 23, and at 23 you change girlfriend. Time passes by and you easily change from love to drama, so you can’t repaint the boat every year and always give it a new name. So I was in a cocktail bar in Hamburg, it was 3 o’clock in the morning, talking to one of my good friends from university and we were searching for a name. The bar tender said (he was an old guy dressed in white) “Amigos, I have something for you, it is a good drink, but it will kill you tonight”.

We said “no, please don’t kill us!” (laughs).

So he put gin, angostura and said it was a sailor’s drink from England, and its name is Pink Gin. So out of drinking 5 pink gin, I lost one day in my memory, I woke up with a big headache and I thought “it is a good name for the boat”. It is the name of a famous sailor’s drink from England.

Very good storie. Do you have the previous ships?

No, I had to sell them, they cost a lot.

Why sail a boat and not a cruise?

I started sailing when I was a little kid and I love always sailing. Everybody knows at yacht clubs there are two different kind of people, those who like big motor boats, and those who like the sailing boats, the nature, sailing for sport, there are two different worlds.

Do you have any other ship?

I still have our family’s motor yacht, “Sunny Day”. It was build 30 years ago in Santa Margarita, Liguria (Italy). Usually it is in Italy, we still keep it for kids and friends.

Do you have a hobby?

Hobbies? What else do I need more? (laughs) I have to say the boat is 90% of my hobbies.

Tell us about you Guinness record anecdote.

I was sitting here in my boat with my old captain Henry and we were talking about sometimes we are coming to a beach or an island where you don’t get a rented car. So I said “we should build something which could float on the water like a boat and can go to the beach and drive as a car”. We built it and it was still in my garage and then we said “what do we do with this?”. And then somebody came and said “Richard Branson has a record in Guiness Book for cruising the channel on an amphibiuos car”. He is a British business man who likes this kind of competition. We beat his record by 14 minutes and is still in the Guiness Book. You will find us in YouTube.

So it was your idea to cross in that vehicle?

Yes, and we have been in the first page of London Times and in my local newspaper.

And we set a new record! (laughs) What is your favorite car?

My Porsche Targa. It’s at my home.

por año que vienen a recuperarse allí, confortablemente. Pocos años después comencé a apoyar a una escuela en Río de Janeiro, para niños de favelas de Santa Teresa. Quizás este es el proyecto que más me gustó porque ayudo a niños preescolares (de 2 y 3 años) que viven momentos traumáticos, porque hay tiroteos en las noches, sus padres están en la droga o sus madres son prostitutas, o la razón que sea. Entonces vienen a la escuela, duermen unas horas en la mañana y luego comienzan sus clases. Para todos ellos estoy pagando su educación en idioma inglés e IT (Tecnología de la Información) porque para escapar necesitas hablar inglés y saber manejar una computadora.

Si quieres encontrarla en internet se llama Tabaluga House Rio. Respecto a su profesión: ¿hay prótesis para personas que practican deportes acuáticos?

Si, hoy día con miembros artificiales de última generación puedes nadar, puedes bucear. Con nuestros brazos y piernas biónicos es posible hacer casi todo tipo de deporte acuático. ¿Cuál fue la prótesis más complicada que ha hecho?

Si alguien pierde un brazo o una pierna, siempre es una situación traumática.

Sea debido a un accidente, o a cáncer, traumatismo, lo que sea. Creo que el momento más emocionante fue un caso en Bulgaria: una mujer intentó suicidarse porque estaba sufriendo una gran depresión. Trepó una columna de electricidad y debido al shock perdió ambos brazos y ambas piernas. Pudimos darle rehabilitación y un día manejó un auto desde Bulgaria hasta Alemania, con dos brazos y dos piernas artificales.

Cuando necesitas este tipo de rehabilitación, cada momento es muy especial para la persona y su familia, y nuestra pasión es ayudar. Tenemos una oficina de OttoBock en el World Trade Center Montevideo, abrimos el año pasado. ¿Entonces ustedes apoyan los Juegos Paralímpicos?

Si, estamos yendo a Pyongyang para los juegos de inverno y luego nos concentraremos en Tokyo 2020, y el Pink Gin irá a Tokyo. ¡Oscar, tenemos que comprar algunos mapas para encontrar la forma de llegar a Tokyo! (risas)

Do you have an airplane?

Yes, I do. It’s a Bombardier and it is staying here at Punta del Este’s airport. We are coming often via Cuba, then we go to Rio de Janeiro because we have a house in Santa Teresa.

So I will fly back from Buenos Aires and I will make a few stops for business.

Have you crossed the ocean on the boat?

When I was much younger at the old Pink Gin I think I did 3 to 5 crossings but Atlantic crossing (Oscar knows) can be very boring if there is no wind, it is like a lake. But it can be terrible if you have too much wind, you better stay at home! You can do it once or twice in your life for your ego and that it’s ok.

What is the donation that most excited you?

Maybe I have to say two things: number one, I created a shelter for kids out of social difficult families in Germany, in my hometown Duderstadt. We host 500 kids per year who are coming for holidays there, in a premium quality. Few years later I started to support a school in Rio de Janeiro for favela’s kids in Santa Teresa and maybe this is the project I like the most because I am sponsoring pre school for the little ones (2 and 3 years old) who have traumatic moments because in the nights there are shooting and maybe the father is on drugs, the mother is a prostitute or whatever and they come to school, sleep a few hours in the morning then starts school.

For all those ones I am paying for their English and IT (Information Technology) education, because to escape you need to speak English

and know how to manage a computer. To find it on the internet, it is Tabaluga House Rio. Talking about your profession, are there prosthetics for people who do water sports?

Yes, today with state-of-the-art artificial limbs you can go swimming, you can go diving. With our byonic arms and legs it is almost possible to do all kind of water sports.

What was the hardest prosthetics you had to do?

If somebody loses an arm or a leg it’s always a traumatic situation. Due to an accident or a cancer, or trauma, whatever. I think the most touching moment was a case from Bulgaria: a woman tried to commit suicide, she was climbing up because she had a deep depression, she was climbing up an electricity mast and lost both arms and both legs. We manage to give her rehabilitation and one day she was driving a car with two artificial arms and two artificial legs, from Bulgaria to Germany. Every traumatic moment when you need this kind of rehabilitation is very special for the person, for the family and it is our passion to help. We have OttoBock’s office in Montevideo at the World Trade Center, we opened it last year.

So you support the Paralympic Games?

Yes, we are going to Pyongyang for winter games and then we concentrate on the Tokyo 2020 and Pink Gin will go to Tokyo. Hey Oscar!

We will have to buy some charts so we find the way to go to Tokyo! (laughs)

¿Cuándo comenzó tu carrera en la náutica? Tienes 25 años.

Pues fue pura casualidad, yo trabajaba en una escuela de buceo donde estudié dos años. Tendría 18 ó 19 años. Llegué a la casa del tío de mi novia y había un capitán. Yo venía de bucear, hasta tenía la marca de las gafas en la cara. Estábamos invitados a la misma barbacoa; me lo presentaron y me dijo (traducción mediante porque yo no hablaba nada de inglés): “necesito un buceador mañana; tengo un problema debajo del barco”.

Como a veces tenemos que algún mantenimiento… nada, ¡fui! Fueron solo 10 minutos, así que ni le cobré. Me enseñó el barco, quedé encantado y me dijo “¿Qué harás ahora?”. Porque era final de temporada y ahí solo se puede bucear 6 meses, luego el agua está bastante fría. ¿En qué ciudad fue eso?

En Palma de Mallorca. Y entonces respondí “pues nada la verdad, hago

buceo por seis meses en verano y no tenía pensado nada de momento”. “¿Por qué no te vienes a cruzar el Atlántico conmigo?” respondió. Pero solo como hobbie, luego él me enviaba a casa en avión. Acepté y fuimos de Palma a las Islas Canarias y de ahí a Antigua. Cuando llegamos me ofreció trabajo. Me dijo si quería quedarme con ellos. ¿Y habías estudiado sobre naútica?

No, empecé de cero. De hecho me fui con cinco personas que solo hablaban inglés. Y estuve tres semanas ahí sin comunicarme. ¡Ni una palabra!

Aprendiste muy rápido…

Cuando necesitas comer, beber, comunicarte… ¡aprendes o aprendes! ¿Qué barco era ese?

Se llamaba Seljm (se pronuncia “Selim”).

Era un barco clásico, no tiene nada que ver a este. Era de 110 pies, estaba bien de

tamaño. El Pink Gin VI es todo moderno pero este era todo manual. Se dormía poco, no era un trabajo común de 8 horas donde vuelves a tu casa y duermes. Allí no. ¡Estás en el mar! Incluso en el puerto, si viene una tormenta tienen que estar todos arriba. Y nada, empezó así. El barco se paró cuatro meses en Antigua y estuve viviendo seis meses en él. Aprendí mucho inglés; poco a poco iba aprendiendo más del barco y cómo se llamaban las cosas. ¡De hecho hay cosas que ahora mismo no te sé decir como se llaman en castellano!

De ahí nos fuimos a un viaje largo: las Islas Azores, Inglaterra y a todo el Mar Báltico. Después a Mallorca, eso duró como año y medio. Camino a Mallorca, paramos en Saint-Tropez y el capitán me dijo que el barco se iba a parar para una reforma, que íbamos a estar seis u ocho meses. “Si no encuentras trabajo, yo te seguiré pagando. Pero todo lo que has

hecho este año lo vas a perder, porque te vas a ir a casa a dormir, a hablar castellano, porque esto, porque lo otro” dijo. Como él estaba tan contento conmigo, me buscó trabajo. Habló directamente con el que ahora es Manager de este barco, el que maneja el astillero que el Jefe ha comprado, Baltic. “Mira Henry, tengo un chaval que tal, que cual”. No sé qué habrá dicho, pero luego tuve la entrevista más corta de mi vida: fueron 30 segundos donde me miró y me dijo “Vale, ven”. Al fin y al cabo en una entrevista puedes ver muy poco… Pero el Jefe me esponsorizó todos los cursos, me dio la oportunidad y aquí estoy. ¡El Jefe es un diez! La capacitación es algo en lo que no se puede ir tan rápido, porque cuesta muchísimo dinero. Pero gracias a él la tuve.

Entonces hace pocos años que empezaste a navegar ¡y ya eres capitán del barco más grande del mundo en su clase!

Sí, en solo seis años. ¿Qué es lo más difícil de tu trabajo?

Ser la persona más joven de la tripulación. Tengo gente bajo mi cargo de 35, 40 años y no es fácil. Y tengo una muy buena tripulación ¿eh? Pero eso es lo más difícil. Eso, la coordinación, el Jefe… me encanta, me encanta estar a tope, pero sí, lo más difícil (por mi edad) es la tripulación. ¿Ocho tripulantes son suficientes para el tamaño de este barco?

El barco podría perfectamente ir con diez; el problema es que no se ha hecho para ello, no hay sitio, y además es un espacio muy pequeño el barco. ¿Tu comienzo fue en el Pink Gin V? Sí. Empecé en el Pink Gin V como marinero; después de dos años el primer oficial se fue y el Jefe me dio la oportunidad; eso para mi fue como un gran salto. Tuve que obtener certificación –que no tenía– y fue un empuje para hacerla. Solo tenía 22 años y ya era mucha responsabilidad: de la cubierta para arriba todo es tuyo, así que ¡imagínate! Después el barco se empezó a parar porque se quería vender, y para vender un barco tienes que exponerlo. Pero el Jefe tiene –como ha dicho– “el barco de la familia”.

Que es un crucero.

Si, es un barco a motor, tiene 25 o 26 metros y a ese se le hizo una reforma

When did your career in sailing begin?

You are 25 years old.

Well, it was pure coincidence, I worked in a diving school where I studied for two years. I was 18 or 19 years old. I arrived at the house of my girlfriend’s uncle and there was a captain.

I came from diving, even had the mark of the glasses on my face. We were invited to the same barbecue; I was introduced and he told me (through translation, because I did not speak any English): “I need a diver tomorrow; I have a problem under the boat“. As we sometimes have to do some maintenance... nothing, I went! It was only 10 minutes, so I did not charge him. He showed me the boat, I was delighted and he said “What will you do now?” Because it was the end of the season and there you can only dive for 6 months, then the water is quite cold.

Where was that?

In Palma de Mallorca. And then I answered “well, nothing really, I dive for six months in the summer and I hadn’t thought about anything at the moment”. “Why don’t you come to cross the Atlantic with us?” he replied. But only as a hobby, then he would send me back to home by plane. I accepted and we went from Palma to the Canary Islands and from there to Antigua. When arrived, he offered me a job. He told me if I wanted to stay with them.

And have you studied nautical?

No, I started from zero. In fact I left with five people who only spoke English. And I was there for three weeks without communicating.

Not a word!

You learned very fast…

When you need to eat, drink, communicate... you learn or learn!

What ship was that?

His name was Seljm. It was a classic ship, it has nothing to do with this. It was 110 feet, it was well sized. The Pink Gin VI is all modern but this was all manual. You slept little, it wasn’t a common 8-hour job where you go back to your house and sleep. Not there. You are in the sea! Even in the port, if a storm comes, everyone have to be up. So I started like this.

The ship stopped four months in Antigua and I was living six months in it. I learned a lot of English; little by little I was learning more

about the boat and how things were called.

In fact there are things that right now I don’t know how to say as they are called in Spanish!

From there we went on a long trip: the Azores Islands, then England and the entire Baltic Sea. After Mallorca, that lasted about a year and a half. On the way to Mallorca, we stopped at Saint-Tropez and the captain told me that the ship was going to stop for a reform and that we were going to be stopped for six or eight months. “If you can’t find a job, I will continue paying you. But everything you’ve done this year you’re going to lose, because you’re going to go home to sleep, to speak Spanish, because this, because that“ he said. As he was so happy with me, he looked for a job for me. He spoke directly with the one who today manages this ship and the shipyard that the Boss has bought, Baltic. “Look, Henry, I have a kid like that, bla, bla, bla” I don’tt know what he said, but then I had the shortest interview of my life: it was 30 seconds where he looked at me and said “OK, come”. At the end of the day in an interview you can see very little ... But the Boss sponsored me all the courses, gave me the opportunity and here I am. The Boss is a ten! Training is something that can’t go so quickly, because it costs a lot of money. But thanks to him I had it.

Then you started sailing a few years ago and you are now captain of the world’s largest ship in its class!

Yes, in only six years.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Be the youngest person in the crew. I have people under my charge of 35, 40 years and it is not easy. And I have a very good crew, huh? But that is the hardest thing. That, the coordination, the Boss... I love it, I love being on top, but yes, the hardest thing (for my age) is the crew.

Are eight crewmen enough for the size of this ship?

The ship could perfectly go with ten; the problem is that it has not been done for it, there is no room, and the boat it’s a very small space also.

Your start was in the Pink Gin V? Yes. I started in Pink Gin V as a sailor; after two years the first officer left and the Chief gave me the opportunity; that for me was like a big jump. I had to obtain certification - which I didn’t have - and it was a push to do it. I was only 22 years old and it was already a lot of responsibility: from the main deck, everything above it is yours, so imagine! Then the ship started to stop because he wanted to sell it,

¿Cuál fue la travesía más larga que te tocó hacer sin escala?

Sería muy difícil decidirme, pero seguramente fue la primera que hice. Porque parece mentira pero cuando lo haces mínimo por primera o segunda vez, te llama tanto la atención que pierdes la noción del tiempo.

en Finlandia, en su astillero. Yo me iba a ir, porque el Pink Gin V paraba todo el tiempo y yo quería mover y mover.

Volé a Finlandia y me ofreció llevar el crucero como capitán, que para mi fue… ¡uau! Pero claro, yo sin saber que eso era como su “prueba”. ¡Fui allí inocentemente! (risas). Lo hice y antes que acabara el verano, me llevó a un bar en Palma. Me dijo que iba a ser el capitán del Pink Gin VI. Le dije que no podía ser, que era imposible por muchas cosas, especialmente por la edad.

Aunque por ser como soy siempre he ido por delante de mis posibilidades. Ya en el centro de buceo quería comerme el mundo, en el Seljm quería comerme el mundo, en el Pink Gin me lo comí, me lo quiero comer en este ¡y me lo seguiré comiendo! (risas).

¿Cuáles son los lugares del mundo que más te ha gustado conocer?

Es relativo. Hay sitios muy bonitos en el mundo, pero depende para hacer qué. Yo diría que “la foto” que más me ha gustado, no viendo una foto literalmente pero que yo he visualizado una foto ha sido Fernando de Noronha. Lo tengo que decir, siempre lo diré y es mi sitio. Hay hermosos lugares en el Caribe, Escandinavia, aquí en Punta, el Mediterráneo... Es muy difícil contestarte, pero para vivir sigo pensando que el mejor sitio del mundo es Palma de Mallorca. ¿Cómo es un día de trabajo en el Pink Gin amarrado y navegando? ¡Muy diferentes! Amarrado, el día empieza con todo: tienes tripulación que atender, temas para el señor, para su empresa, etc. Alguien viene diciéndote que es algo muy importante y luego resulta no serlo tanto. Pero hay que escucharlo y resolver; nunca puedes hacer de menos.

La edad no me ha importado a gran escala, o al menos no me ha perjudicado.

Pero me ha importado personalmente, porque no es cómodo, no te sientes bien. A veces estoy diciendo cosas a gente de 28, 30 años y si te pones en su lugar pienso lo que ellos pensarán. Desafortunadamente, los humanos –por lo menos en esta industria– tenemos que tener un escalafón. Porque he intentado bajarme pero no, no se puede, tiene que haber un escalón directo.

En el último Pink Gin tuve tres o cuatro capitanes, porque ninguno congeniaba con el Jefe. Al final he sufrido mucho porque nadie daba un duro por nosotros; venía uno nuevo y cambiaba todo el modus operandi. Pero a mí me gusta mucho. Siempre lo diré: para mí la tripulación es lo primero; lo he sufrido y lo he vivido. Yo me levanto y quiero escucharlos, antes que mirar mi ordenador y destinar tiempo a lo que tenga que hacer. Nos reímos, si tienen un problema buscamos solucionarlo.

Primero tengo la tripulación y después tengo mi trabajo.

Un socio que entrevistamos nos decía “en la náutica es casi un régimen militar”.

Es así. Todos los certificados, todo, viene del régimen militar. Nosotros hacemos muchas cosas como los militares. Por ejemplo, los viernes hay que limpiar todas las acomodaciones. Si no, es una cosa por la otra y se convierte en un burdel.

Quizás chequear una agenda de tareas, o algo así. ¿Sabes qué pasa? Tengo que delegar mucho en la tripulación por la magnitud de trabajo que tengo. Entonces superviso las tareas, sí, pero no puedo micro humanizar, no puedo ir con un microscopio y decir “no has hecho esto”.

Already in the diving center I wanted to eat the world, in the Seljm I wanted to eat the world, in the Pink Gin I ate it, I want to eat it in this one and I will continue eating it! (laughs) Age has not mattered to me on a large scale, or at least it hasn’t hurt me. But it has mattered to me personally, because it isn’t comfortable, you don’t feel well. Sometimes I am saying things to people of 28, 30 years and if you put yourself in their place I think what they will think. Unfortunately, humans - at least in this industry - have to have a career ladder.

Because I tried to get down but no, you can’t, there has to be a direct step.

A Club’s member we interviewed told us “in the nautical sector it’s almost a military regime”.

What was the longest journey you had to do without a stopover?

Te podría decir un abanico de cosas y no acabaría nunca.

Cuando alguien está de licencia ¿viene un suplente?

No, la tripulación es fija. Sólo vienen suplentes como ahora, que se han enfermado y tenemos que ir desde Argentina directo a Guadalupe y eso son 18 días de navegación, entonces sí los traigo. ¿De qué origen es la tripulación?

Tenemos ingleses, franceses, sudafricano, escocés; teníamos un alemán que se ha ido justo hace un par de días y yo de España. ¿Qué velocidad han alcanzado navegando?

How is a working day in the Pink Gin moored and sailing?

Very different! Moored, the day starts with everything: you have crew to attend, issues for the lord, for his company, etc. Someone is telling you that it is something very important and then it turns out not to be so important.

Do you know what happens? I have to delegate a lot to the crew because of the magnitude of the work I have. Then I supervise the tasks, yes, but I can not micro humanize, I can’t go with a microscope and say “you haven’t done this”. The captain of a ship does it, but I do many more things for the Lord, so I can’t.

It is impossible!

And that would be on a tied day. Would sailing be lighter?

No way! All that, plus: drive the boat by where it should, look at the time, look at the next stop, check all certifications are up to date, insurance, where we are going to stop, visas, if someone is going to fly or need a vacation, because eight people means that eight months a year there are people on vacation,

Have you experienced a difficult situation navigating?

Yes, two, in which I would have preferred to be on the sofa in my house and where I have considered if I should be doing that and in that moment. One in the Baltic Sea with the other boat, and this one on the coast of Brazil, coming to Punta del Este.

Yes! Some situations that you did not see in the weather forecast, plus 4 knots of current with us down and 30 or 35 knots in the bow.

That combination makes a pyramid, there were six and a half meters of wave! And by Murphy’s law, we were traveling a site for 48 hours where there was no shelter to anchor, nothing. The wind direction went directly to the land and there was no port, nothing to take refuge. We had it at 3 knots for almost two days, just holding the storm. We broke some things from the boat, this (the main bed) sank a bit... it was uncomfortable, very uncomfortable. And on the first transatlantic I do as captain!

What do you think is the best job in the world?

sería la mejor de mi vida. Pero la primera vez que desplegamos la vela rosa y alcanzamos esa velocidad, fue la vez que he estado más aterrado. Y también cuando bajaba por la costa de Brasil ahora, hacia acá. ¿Has vivido una situación difícil navegando?

Sí, dos, en las que hubiera preferido estar en el sofá de mi casa y donde me he planteado si debería estar haciendo eso y en ese momento. Una en el mar Báltico con el otro barco y esta en la costa de Brasil, viniendo hacia Punta del Este. ¿Eran vientos muy fuertes? ¡Sí! Unas situaciones que no las veías en el pronóstico meteorológico, más 4 nudos de corriente con nosotros hacia abajo y 30 o 35 nudos en la proa. Esa combinación forma una pirámide, ¡había seis metros y medio de ola! Y por ley de Murphy, transitábamos un sitio por 48 horas donde no había ningún refugio ni para ancla, ni para nada. La dirección iba directamente hacia la tierra y no había ningún puerto, nada para refugiarse. Lo tuvimos a 3 nudos por casi dos días, solo aguantando el temporal. Rompimos algunas cosas del barco, esto (la cama principal) se hundió un poco… fue incómodo, muy incómodo. ¡Y en la primera transatlántico que hago como capitán! ¿Cuál crees que es el mejor trabajo del mundo?

(Piensa mucho, suspira y ríe). Me encanta mi trabajo, si no, no lo haría. Nunca pensé que haría esto, si me decías hace seis años que iba a estar aquí sentado, me hubiera reído y no lo habría creído. ¿Y entonces cuál era tu sueño?

No lo tengo claro. Tenía 16 cuando comencé a trabajar en el centro de buceo,

entonces no había ni hecho idea en mi cabeza. Esto ha venido tan rápido que no he tenido tiempo ni de pensar.

Navegando pasas momentos de nervios, te sientes mal, comes mal, duermes mal. Llegas a puerto deseando bajarte, pero luego lo miras y piensas “quiero subirme de nuevo”. ¿Es así? ¡Exactamente! Yo voy a casa por 15 días, me muero por ir allí. Luego veo que nada cambia, la rutina es la misma y digo“mis vacaciones deberían haber sido en otro sitio”. Conocemos a tanta gente por todo el mundo, serán 50 ó 55 países, te llena tanto que después… (piensa) ¿Sabes lo que me ha dicho el Jefe? El Pink Gin tiene una marca, la gente quiere venir a trabajar aquí. Si le dices “Pink Gin” a cualquiera que trabaje en barcos de este tamaño, sabrá qué barco es. Porque sabe que a la gente se la cuida, que el propietario es generoso. ¿Te piensas que…? (suspira). No se le puede ni hablar a un propietario normal de un barco. Yo tengo una relación increíble con el señor, si no no estaría aquí.

Incluso estar aquí, ahora (en su camarote, donde hicimos la entrevista). ¡Sería imposible! Quizás las chicas podrían, si este fuera otro barco, claro. ¿Tienes un domicilio fijo?

De momento no. Me lo tengo que plantear, hace un año que soy capitán, haré otro y de a poco veré. Es muy difícil; tampoco puedes dejar a una persona cuando le ayudas tanto, no es justo para él después de todo lo que ha hecho por mi. Más aún después del trato que he tenido, en 6 años ni un mal comentario del señor, ni una alzada de voz. ¡Y son 6 años! ¿eh? ¡Se porta muy bien! (risas).

ATRAVESAMOS CON ÉXITO UNA TORMENTA CON OLAS DE SEIS METROS PORQUE ÍBAMOS EN EL PINK GIN. EN OTRO VELERO QUIZÁS NO LO HUBIÉRAMOS LOGRADO. WE SUCCESSFULLY WENT THORUGH A STORM WITH SIXMETER WAVES BECAUSE WE WERE IN THE PINK GIN. IN ANOTHER SAILBOAT MAYBE WE WOULD HAVE NOT MADE IT.

¿Cómo crees que hubiera sido atravesar la tormenta en Brasil a bordo de un barco de menor tecnología o capacidad?

Hay barcos que estoy seguro que no lo hubieran resistido, pero puede que incluso haya estado en ese tipo de mar (como tripulante) y ni me haya dado cuenta. Lo que te digo es que yo estaba ahí arriba y había tripulación abajo durmiendo. ¡No se podía dormir en esas condiciones! ¿Justo ocurrió en la noche esa tormenta?

Siempre es la ley de Murphy, siempre.

Es como cuando se cae alguien al agua: nunca se cae en un día plano y de día, se cae cuando el mar está mal y de noche. ¿Eso ha pasado alguna vez?

Nunca, y espero nunca que pase. ¡Voy a tocar madera!

Do you think you’re going to keep surfing forever?

No, I’m sure not. You can even think about working for the boss, but little by little. The truth is that I have not thought about it.

How do you think it would have been to cross the storm in Brazil aboard a ship of lower technology or capacity?

There are boats that I am sure would not have resisted, but I may have even been in that type of sea (as a crew member) and I have not even noticed. What I’m telling you is that I was up there and there was a crew sleeping downstairs. You could not sleep in those conditions! I do not know what to tell you, I really do not know if I have not noticed or I’ve never been in that.

Did that storm just happen at night?

It’s always Murphy’s law, always. It’s like when someone falls into the water: they never fall on a flat day and during the day, they fall when the sea is bad and at night.

Has that ever happened?

Never, and I hope it never happens. I’m going to touch wood!

J70: bronce en regata de Marblehead para Aldo Centanaro y su equipo

Optimist a realizarse en enero 2019 en Mónaco. Cabe destacar que seremos el único representante de toda América Latina, lo que es un gran orgullo y a la vez un gran desafío para todos.

De este forma continuamos creando y estrechando lazos con importantes clubes de todo el mundo.

Los chicos que participarán del evento son: Bruno Parada, Nahuel Paz, Juan Vidal y Joaquín Castex. Coach: Gustavo Musante. ¡Buenos vientos para todos!

El pasado lunes 24 de setiembre la Armada Nacional organizó una emotiva ceremonia en Conmemoración del 25° Aniversario del Proyecto Uruguay Natural y la participación en la Regata Whitbread, acompañados de autoridades, tripulantes y organizadores del proyecto.

El Señor Comandante en Jefe de la Armada, Almirante Carlos Abilleira, entregó al Comodoro del YCPE, Cr. Juan Etcheverrito, la Medalla 15 de Noviembre de 1817 al Proyecto Uruguay Natural, un gran honor para nuestro Club.

Las tripulaciones de nuestro club siguen destacándose internacionalmente. La clase J 70 disputó el mundial en el mes de setiembre en Marblehead, a 30 millas de Boston. La flota contó con 91 barcos, existiendo una categoría general y la categoría

Corinthians, donde solo pueden correr tripulaciones sin tener profesionales a bordo. La tripulación representando e integrada exclusivamente por socios del Yacht Club Punta del Este, conformada por Aldo Centanaro, sus hijos (Marco y Bruno) y Mauro Leite logró el bronce por su tercer puesto en la Categoría Corinthians entre 35 barcos, con su J70 “Pura Joda”. También lograron un destacadísimo puesto 29 entre los 91 barcos de la flota que contaba con profesionales. Las felicitaciones a nuestra tripulación,

a la que esperamos ver competir en nuestras aguas en enero en el Rolex Circuito Atlántico Sur. También la tripulación de Diego García Terra logró una destacada ubicación en la Semana de Buenos Aires. Lograron el 5º puesto entre 20 embarcaciones.

La mala fortuna les ocurrió en la última regata, donde una enorme bolsa de nylon se les enredó en la quilla haciéndolos terminar últimos, alejándolos de los tres primeros puestos que pelearon todo el campeonato.

Escuela de Vela Experiencias en Porto Alegre

Durante el invierno se llevó a cabo el intercambio entre las escuelas de vela de Club Veleiros de Sul (VDS) y Yacht Club Punta del Este (YCPE) en su tercera edición. En tal sentido, nuestra Escuela participó con alumnos de las clases Optimist, Láser y J 70, que viajaron a Porto Alegre acompañados en algunos casos por su familia y el equipo de instructores.

Esta actividad tuvo por propósito fomentar el intercambio, la navegación, camaradería e integración entre las escuelas de vela de dos clubes amigos.

El Veleiros ha sido un excelente anfitrión, que nos permitió navegar en aguas del Guaiba y experimentar los Elliots, un barco de quilla para 3 navegantes y que fuera Olímpico.

Para nuestros navegantes de Quilla fue novedoso, ya que aprendieron una nueva forma de izar spinnaker y posicionar el tangon. Su forma de navegación es similar a nuestros J 70.

Los optimistas fueron los que más disfrutaron del club y sus instalaciones, además de navegar y correr unas regatas de despedida, hicieron un partido de fútbol y aprovecharon los espacios verdes para conversar y jugar con sus pares brasileños.

El 2019 viene a toda vela

A pesar de que diciembre aún no muestra sus mejores colores ni calores, en el Yacht Club Punta del Este nos preparamos para que el mar se vista de blanco con las velas de los barcos.

En enero, febrero y marzo programamos más de 110 regatas de distintas clases, lo que dará a todo regatista del Río de la Plata y Brasil la oportunidad de disfrutar de nuestra Bahía de Maldonado, una de las mejores canchas del mundo para regatear.

Junto a toda esa actividad, más de 200 socios concurren a la escuela de vela, cumpliendo así nuestro club con el mandato de sus fundadores de 1924: promover la enseñanza de la navegación en barcos a vela. Esta enseñanza es brindada también a alumnos de escuelas públicas y privadas del departamento en forma gratuita.

Entre el 13 y el 19 de enero estaremos organizando el Rolex Circuito Atlántico Sur junto al Yacht Club Argentino. Luego las regatas de veleros clásicos, los elegantes barcos del los años 1930 a 1970.

En febrero, los niños de la clase Optimist, la más popular y extendida por todo el mundo, tendrán su campeonato selectivo para el Mundial en la isla de Antigua en el mes de Julio. Y durante casi todos los días… regatas desde la mañana hasta la puesta del sol.

A mediados de enero un equipo de optimistas del YCPE participarán –por segundo año consecutivo– en un campeonato

Pero no somos un club únicamente de temporada: tendremos clases de vela y regatas durante todo el 2019, nuestros competidores viajarán a distintos campeonatos alrededor del mundo, y sobre fin de año organizaremos dos campeonatos sudamericanos: el de J70 y de la clase Soling.

Navegar utilizando únicamente al viento como fuente de propulsión, es disfrutar del mar en la forma más simple, natural y limpia. Tanto regateando como navegando sin las preocupaciones cotidianas, se disfruta intensamente.

El Yacht Club Porto Rotondo fue anfitrión de una cena en celebración de la reciente firma de nuestro convenio de reciprocidad, a la cual asistió una delegación del Yacht Club Punta del Este: el Comodoro Juan Etcheverrito y Sra. Martha Etcheverrito, integrantes de la Comisión Directiva Sra. Susana Nunes de Lestido, Sra. Patricia Damiani, y socios del Club Sr. Federico Chaoul y Sra., Sr. Arturo García Rosa y Sra. Allí fueron recibidos por el Presidente del YCPR Sr. Roberto Azzi, y por el Presidente Honorario, Conde Luigi Doná dalle Rose, para disfrutar de una increíble velada durante la cual continuamos estrechan-

Pablo Quezada, Capitán de Navío y coordinador de la organización de velas Uruguay 2018, dio una introducción sobre el evento. ¿Cuál es la importancia de la recalada en Uruguay?

Sin dudas, el intercambio cultural.

Recibimos a 1.600 tripulantes de toda América y España. Lo más destacado es el conocimiento mutuo que se genera en los diferentes eventos que se realizan, más que nada en los city tours que se realizan en Punta del Este y Montevideo, además del relacionamiento que se da con la ciudadanía y lugares de interés al recorrer las ciudades. ¿Se aprovecha para hacer enrolamiento naval?

Si, por supuesto, es una acción muy importante. Para eso abrimos dos días al público y aprovechamos para concentrar alumnos de diferentes escuelas y liceos, para que puedan recorrer de forma tranquila y segura los veleros.

A los alumnos –previo al ingreso del velero– les damos una presentación, unos videos simples de cuidado del medio ambiente marino y también de la importancia del mar y lo que significa para nosotros tener una armada que cumplió 200 años el año pasado. Un video institucional les explica qué es la Armada Nacional y qué pueden vivir ellos en el futuro.

Tenemos diferentes tareas en la reglamentación y en el cumplimiento de esa reglamentación, en cuidado del medio ambiente, balizamiento en el mar, seguridad nacional, navegación segura, etc.

Al terminar la carrera naval hacemos la instrucción y llevamos a la práctica todo eso que aprendimos durante 4 años. Un viaje de instrucción significa estar entre seis y ocho meses en el mar y tener la práctica del marino, además de conocer otros países y lugares del mundo. ¿Esta regata forma parte del viaje de instrucción de estos barcos?

Sí, los buques escuela cumplen con el itinerario que marca la organización de Velas Latinoamérica y lo aprovechan para hacer parte del viaje de instrucción. Aquí estamos en un marco de un encuentro. La regata Velas Latinoamérica se cumple cada 4 años; comenzó en 2010 y ya tenemos expectativas para 2022. Lo organiza una armada diferente, en esa oportunidad es la armada de Chile que organiza el itinerario y otros detalles macro, globales; en 2022 lo va a hacer la armada de Brasil.

Aprovecho la oportunidad para decirles que queremos proponer que la armada de Uruguay sea la organizadora para 2030. Obviamente que esto transciende a la Armada; esto tiene un interés nacional, como fuera declarado así por el Presidente de la República. Se creó una comisión en la cual participan –además de Ministerio de Defensa, que ejerce la presidencia de esa comisión– el Ministerio de Turismo; Transporte y Obras Públicas; Relaciones Exteriores y las diferentes intendencias involucradas.

Además está el festejo de la primera Jura de Constitución, que es a nivel nacional y después hay hitos. Para nosotros sería importante porque el Capitán Miranda estaría cumpliendo

What is the importance of the landfall in Uruguay?

Undoubtedly, the cultural exchange. We received 1,600 crew members from all of America and Spain. The most outstanding thing is the mutual knowledge that is generated in the different events that take place, more than anything in the city tours that are held in Punta del Este and Montevideo, besides the relationship that occurs with the citizens and places of interest when traveling the cities.

Is it used to make naval enlistment?

Yes, of course, it’s a very important action.

For that we open two days to the public and take the opportunity to concentrate students from different schools and colleges, so that they could quietly and safely navigate the sailboats. Before the admission to the sailboat, we give a presentation for the students, some simple videos of care of the marine environment and also of the importance of the sea and what it means for us to have an armada that turned 200 years ago last year. An institutional video explains what the Uruguayan Navy is and what they can live in the future.

We have different tasks in the regulation and in the compliance of that regulation; in environment care, sea beaconing, national security, safe navigation, etc.

When we finish the naval career we do the instruction and we put into practice all that we learned during 4 years. A training trip means being about six and eight months at sea and having the practice of the sailor, as well as knowing other countries and places in the world.

DESDE COLOMBIA Y CON CALIDEZ LATINA Uno de los buques que visitamos fue el Gloria, de Colombia. Fuimos recibidos por uno de sus oficiales, que nos atendió con gran calidez: Capitán de Infantería Marina John Jairo Quedal, Oficial Jefe de Embarque del buque escuela.

Usted nos comentó que la estadía en Punta del Este fue más bien corta porque no pudieron descender del barco. Pero vivieron una experiencia que les quedó grabada cuando se iban.

Sí, por motivos de la Marina Colombiana no fue posible desembarcarnos en Punta del Este. Pero sí tuvimos una experiencia de emergencia por decirlo así. La última noche antes de zarpar con destino a Montevideo, sobre las 22:00 horas, una ráfaga de viento de casi 50 nudos azotó la zona donde estaban los buque atracados y tuvimos que hacer un zarpaje de emergencia. ¡Fue una experiencia para todos porque nunca la habíamos vivido! De un momento para otro, un viento muy fuerte nos estaba acercando a la Isla de Gorriti, por lo que debimos zarpar enseguida hacia Montevideo. ¿Este de es un viaje de aprendizaje o simplemente están participando en una regata más?

El buque cumple dos papeles: es un embajador de Colombia ante el mundo y además cumple un papel de instrucción para los cadetes que van a ser los futuros oficiales de la marina colombiana.

A bordo tenemos 77 alumnos de tercer y cuarto año que hacen un semestre académico en el buque.

Podemos decir que la anécdota de Punta del Este fue “un buen e inesperado aprendizaje” entonces…

I take this opportunity to tell you that we want to propose that the Uruguayan Navy be the organizer by 2030. A commission was created –in which the Ministry of Defense holds the presidency– with the Ministry of Tourism, Transportation and Public Works; External Relations and the different municipalities involved.

There is also the celebration of the first Constitution pledge, which is a national event, and then there are milestones.

It would be important for us because Captain Miranda would be celebrating 100 years of its construction; there is also the centenary of the first World Cup and surely other important events.

FROM COLOMBIA, WITH LATIN WARMTH One of the ships we visited was the Gloria, from Colombia. We were met by one of his officers, who treated us with great warmth: Marine Infantry Captain John Jairo Quedal, Chief Shipping Officer of the school ship.

You told us that the stay in Punta del Este was quite short because you could not get off the boat. But you lived an unforgettable experience when you left.

Yes, for reasons of the Colombian Navy it was not possible to disembark in Punta del Este. But we did have an emergency experience to tell. On the last night before sailing to Montevideo, at around 10 pm, a gust of wind of almost 50 knots hit the area where the ships were moored and we had to take an emergency tack.

It was an experience for everyone because we had never lived it! From one moment to another, a very strong wind was approaching the Island of Gorriti, so we had to depart immediately towards Montevideo.

Bueno, nos ha gustado mucho, nos han atendido muy bien; restaurantes muy buenos… ¡hemos pasado bien! En Montevideo hemos recorrido, tomado fotografías; la arquitectura de la ciudad es muy bonita. Hay lugares muy lindos para la fotografiar. ¿Qué es lo que más destaca de este intercambio cultural?

La oportunidad que tenemos –como marinos– de crear lazos de amistad con las marinas amigas. Ya tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir en Río de

Janeiro con los otros buques. Podemos llegar a Madrid o a México por ejemplo, donde ya tenemos una casa a donde vamos y eso es muy bonito. Entre las marinas no hay distinciones políticas, a nosotros no nos interesa si nuestros gobiernos han discutido; o sea, les hablamos a todos como marinos amigos.

Ellos vienen acá a nuestras cubiertas, nosotros vamos a sus cócteles, nuestros cadetes salen juntos a rumbear. Es una buena amistad.

Este Velas Latinoamérica 2018 tiene muchos eventos protocolarios, cócteles, cenas, intercambios… Entre Buenos Aires y Ushuaia vamos a hacer un intercambio de cadetes: mandamos tres cadetes de nuestro buque al buque español y ellos nos envían tres para que ellos también conozcan diferentes culturas y cómo es el trabajo en otros buques. ¿Usted ya había navegado por el Río de la Plata?

Is this a learning trip or are you just participating in one more race?

The ship fulfills two roles: it is an ambassador of Colombia to the world and also plays an instructional role for the cadets who will be the future officers of the Colombian Navy. On board we have 77 third and fourth year students who do an academic semester on the ship.

¿Qué le parece la navegación por estas aguas?

Más que todo, lo complicado es el frío.

Esto es un buque velero; las maniobras se hacen en las velas y por alto.

Los cadetes suben a los palos y con el frío hay momentos que las manos se entumecen. Pero eso es parte del entrenamiento y de la formación de un marino.

LA ELEGANCIA DE UN CISNE BLANCO También nos recibió el Teniente de Navío Alan Maforte Braga Teixeira Ferreira, a bordo del hermoso buque “Cisne Branco” de la Armada de Brasil. ¿Qué fue lo mejor de la parada en Punta del Este?

Lo más importante fue la organización, estaba muy buena. Todos los momentos que el buque necesitó alguna información, algún cambio de horario, algo específico, fuimos muy bien atendidos.

Todo fue perfecto.

¿Pudieron visitar la ciudad de Punta del Este?

Sí, toda la tripulación tuvo la oportunidad de hacer un recorrido por la ciudad.

Fue muy bueno porque este es uno de los principales objetivos de Velas Latinoamérica: conocer la cultura de lugares y países, hacer city tours, etc. ¿Este también es un viaje de entrenamiento y capacitación de cadetes?

No, nuestro buque no es un buque

escuela, contrariamente a lo que pasa a otros buques de Velas Latinoamérica 2018. Nosotros tenemos un navío escuela, llamado Navío Escola Brasil, responsable por formar los guardia marinos, los cadetes brasileros. El principal objetivo de Cisne Branco es servir como una embajada flotante. Solemos recibir e invitar a embajadores, estrechar lazos culturales, conocer a la población etc.

En términos de formación marinera, utilizamos el Cisne Branco para viajes cortos y pequeñas instrucciones, más que nada para mantener algunas tradiciones navales. Acá no tenemos condiciones para albergar a todos los cadetes, no hay muchas habitaciones. ¿Es más bien un viaje diplomático entonces?

Exacto. Velas Latinoamérica es muy importante para estrechar lazos con todas las armadas. Nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de conocer otras culturas, otros buques, cómo trabajan, cómo operan, creemos que se trata de una oportunidad para toda la tripulación para aprender y evolucionar. ¿El barco ha navegado por todo el mundo?

Sí, este año por ejemplo, vamos a cruzar Cabo de Hornos, pasar por el Océano Pacífico, cruzar el canal de Panamá y después Costa Rica e ir regresando a Río, pasando por Belén y Salvador, ambos en la costa de Brasil.

Brasil organizará en 2022 el Velas Latinoamérica, cuando cumplirá 200 años de su independencia. ¿Puede adelantarnos algo de lo que vaya a suceder?

Bueno, hay mucha especulación todavía. Sin embargo, queda mucho

What stands out the most in this cultural exchange?

How do you like navigating these waters?

What was the best thing about the stop in Punta del Este?

The most important thing was the organization, it was very good. All the moments that the ship needed some information, some change of schedule, something specific, we were very well taken care of.

Everything was perfect.

Could you visit the city of Punta del Este?

Si, creo que sí, creo que hay más posibilidad para incluirlos. ¿Y usted ya había navegado por el Río de la Plata?

Por casualidad sí, cuando yo era cadete en un navío de Portugal, el Sagres.

Participé en uno de los tramos del Velas Latinoamérica 2010. Salí de Recife a Punta del Este, después a Mar del Plata y después Montevideo. ¿Y cómo es navegar estas aguas?

Ah, es muy distinto. Saliendo de Punta del Este, los buques estaban fondeados con 48 nudos de viento, estaba ventoso y fue un zarpe difícil. El ancla apenas pudo mantener al buque y eso le pasó a varios buques.

¿Vive en Argentina, en Uruguay o por todo el mundo?

No, ando dando vueltas por el mundo. ¿Podría decirse que su dirección es el número de asiento de un avión?

(Risas) Y, más o menos, si. Mi dirección “real” es una dirección de mail. Ya no tenés más dirección, te mandan un mail y te encuentran. “¿Dónde estás?” Qué se yo, qué importa. ¿A alguien le preguntas dónde está? Está por WhatsApp, asumís que está. ¿Dónde? ¡Qué se yo!

Si pudiera elegir dónde pasar más tiempo en el año, ¿dónde sería?

En verano acá, en Punta del Este. Y si me sacás de Punta del Este, Buenos Aires y Londres. Buenos Aires porque tenés una cantidad de afectos, tu vida allá. Aún con los problemas que tiene la Argentina. Y Punta del Este… ¡porque es el mejor lugar del mundo! No hay que venir en junio y julio porque hace frío, pero salvo eso, ¿dónde vas a estar mejor que acá? La gente es la mejor, nos tratan bárbaro, es todo más sencillo, tenés menos revoluciones y la gente

piensa más, eso es todo. Es increible como estás tan cerquita de Argentina, pero cruzás el puente, llegás acá y todo cambió.

Es otro mundo. Vengo de estar en Bután, es fabuloso. Y si tuviese que asemejar un país a Bután, te diría que es Uruguay. Lejísimos en algunos aspectos, pero si vas a la filosofía y a cómo la gente se toma las cosas, Bután.

Es espectacular, todo budismo, son 800.000 habitantes, muy chiquitito.

Es un país que está al norte de India. La frontera del norte es el Tibet (China). En Bután de todos lados ves el Himalaya, es una cosa impresionante. Un país totalmente ecológico, 80% del país es verde. El Rey es un tipo joven, ecológico completamente. La gente está razonablemente bien vestida; no es que sean ricos. Ellos inventaron una cosa fenomenal: el Rey anterior –el papá de este chico– dijo que no se podía medir el bienestar de un pueblo por su riqueza. Porque ¿cómo lo medís en otros países? Tomás el PBI, lo dividís por

la cantidad de habitantes y ese es el producto bruto per cápita. El que más tiene, supuestamente es el más rico. Y este hombre dijo que no, que lo que tenés que considerar para el índice de riqueza es el bienestar social, la cantidad de asesinatos, la educación que tienen; una cantidad de otros parámetros que no tienen que ver con el producto bruto, y lo llamó el Índice de Felicidad. Fue a la ONU hace unos 25 años, lo presentó y la ONU lo aprobó.

Hay un índice de felicidad que no va solamente con la plata. Bueno, hace 25 años que Bután es el país más feliz del mundo. Y cuando llegás a Bután decís “si, es verdad”. La gente tranquila, los monjes por la calle, todos te tratan con respeto. No son ricos; son pobres pero austeros y bien llevado. Buen país.

Están allá en el medio de la montaña, las cosas pasan a otra velocidad.

Es que muchas veces la geografía obliga a cómo llevar el ritmo.

Bueno, pero tenés un país al lado de ellos –si bien no tienen frontera– que

Look at life differently Do you live in Argentina, in Uruguay or around the world?

No, I’m walking around the world.

Could you say that your address is the seat number of an airplane?

(Laughs) More or less, yes. My “real” address is an email address. You don’t have any more address, they send you an email and they find you. “Where are you?” I don’t know, it doesn’t matter. Do you ask where he is? It is by WhatsApp, you assume it is. Where?

I don’t know!

If you could choose where to spend more time in the year, where would it be?

In summer, here, in Punta del Este. And if you take me out of Punta del Este, Buenos Aires and London. Buenos Aires because you have a lot of affections, your life there. It’s another world. I come from being in Bhutan, it’s fabulous. And if I had to resemble a country to Bhutan, I would say that it is Uruguay. So far in some aspects, but if you go to philosophy and how people take things, Bhutan.

It’s spectacular, all Buddhism, 800,000 inhabitants, very little. It is a country that is north of India. The northern border is Tibet (China). In Bhutan you see the Himalayas from everywhere, it’s an awesome thing. A totally ecological country, 80% of the country is green. The King is a young, eco-friendly man. People are reasonably well dressed; It’s not that they are rich. They invented a phenomenal thing: the previous King –the father of this boy– said that you could not measure the welfare of a people for their wealth. Because how do you measure it in other countries? You take the GDP,

you divide it by the number of inhabitants and that is the gross product per capita.

The one who has more, supposedly is the richest. And this man said no. He said that you have to consider the social welfare, the number of murders, the education they have; a number of other parameters that have nothing related to the gross product, and called it the Happiness Index. He went to the UN about 25 years ago, he presented it and the UN approved it.

There is a happiness index not directly related with money. Well, since 25 years, Bhutan is the happiest country in the world.

And when you arrive in Bhutan you say “yes, it’s true”. The quiet people, the monks down the street, all treat you with respect. They are not rich; they are poor but austere and fine. Good country. They are there in the middle of the mountain, things happen at another speed.

es Nepal, que también tiene budismo, hinduismo y qué se yo, pero no tiene nada que ver. Son frenéticos, llegás a la ciudad y todos tocan bocina, corren, van y vienen. Y tienen –después del Riachuelo de Buenos Aires–el río más contaminado del mundo, el que pasa por Katmandú (capital de Nepal). Ahí no entendés la locura que es, eso no te pasa en Bután y están al lado… va en la cultura del pueblo. Andá a Uruguay, cruzá a Argentina y son dos culturas distintas.

El peor ejemplo es Haití y Dominicana.

Es la misma isla; una línea los divide. De un lado es el país más pobre de América y del otro, no es el paraíso pero es muy distinto. ¿Y qué los divide? Una rayita.

Cultura, educación. Uruguay tiene educación. Tiene muchos problemas, pero tiene educación. Educación cívica, otra cultura. Y si me decís a qué asemejaría Bután, a Uruguay. Salvando la distancia, religión y otras cosas, por supuesto.

Será por algo de eso que los argentinos siempre vienen.

which is Nepal, which also has Buddhism, Hinduism, etc., but it has nothing to do with it. They are frantic, you get to the city and everyone honks, they run, they come and go. And they have –after the Riachuelo of Buenos Aires– the most polluted river in the world, the one that passes through Kathmandu (capital of Nepal). There you don’t understand the madness, that does not happen to you in Bhutan and they are next... it goes in the culture of the town. Go to Uruguay, cross to Argentina and they are two different cultures.

The worst example is Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It’s the same island; a line divides them. On one side is the poorest country in America and on the other, it is not paradise but it is very different. And what divides them? A hairline. Culture, education. Uruguay has an education. Has many problems also, but has an education.

Civic education, another culture. And if you tell me what would be like Bhutan, Uruguay. Except for distance, religion and other things, of course.

It may the reason for so many Argentines always come.

If you can have a little bit of each thing, the best of each one, perfect. In Uruguay you have the best four or five months; here you come in November and stay until March, you are spectacular. The rest of the year I leave it to you! (Laughs)

Los automóviles son la otra pasión de Sielecki. Ferraris, Maseratis... pero especialmente, Bentleys de colección.

Lo que surgió de una “idea loca” dicha en un asado entre amigos, es hoy una realidad para este grupo de elegidos: siete personas que, cada tanto, se reúnen con sus Bentleys de la década de 1920 y 1930 para recorrer el mundo. Hombres y máquinas puestos a prueba, donde –más allá de una pensada logística– la amistad, el compañerismo y la pasión son las razones para hacer de cada viaje una aventura inolvidable. Y por supuesto, la forma de apreciar la real dimensión del ser humano. Agradecemos a Sielecki por habernos obsequiado un libro con las memorias de dos grandes aventuras por América. ¡Fantástico!

What emerged from a “crazy idea” said in a barbecue among friends, is today a reality for this group of elected: seven people who, every so often, meet with their Bentleys of the 1920s and 1930s to travel the world. Men and machines put to the test, where - beyond a thoughtful logistics - friendship, companionship and passion are the reasons to make each trip an unforgettable adventure. na delegación del Club fue a recibirla, integrada por el Comodoro Juan Etcheverrito y Sra. Martha Etcheverrito, el Vice Comodoro Daniel Sielecki, el Tesorero David Griffiths y Sra., vocal Lucina Gercar y Sr. Ernesto Gercar, Presidente de la Comisión de Pesca y de Motonáutica Héctor Sarno, el socio Juan J. Etcheverrito y Sra., además de la funcionaria Jimena Hernández. También asistió el Sr. Intendente de Maldonado Ing. Enrique Antía y Sra. Liliana Bernardez de Antía, padres del primer competidor uruguayo Fernando “Nano”Antía, junto a más familiares que asistieron a verlo luego de un año desde su zarpada.

Liverpool, quien presentó a Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Presidente y co-fundador de la Clipper Race, para un emotivo discurso acerca del cierre del evento. Tras él la Señora Tracey Crouch, MP, Minister of Sport and Civil Society habló acerca de la importancia que estos eventos tienen para los países anfitriones.

El Comodoro participó del Clipper Race Partners Forum y en la noche la delegación del Club asistió a una cena en el fantástico Liverpool Town Hall, organizada por Clipper y Great Britain Campaign en agradecimiento a los Partners de la regata.

Wendy Tuck, del barco Sanya, hizo historia al convertirse en la primer mujer en ganar una regata de la vuelta al mundo, seguida por otra mujer, Nikki Henderson del Visit Seattle, de tan sólo 23 años de edad. El tercer lugar fue para

el Quingdao, Skipper Chris Kobusch.

La flota fue recibida por una gran multitud que rodeaba el Albert Dock, en donde amarraron los barcos luego de un desfile por el río.

La entrega de Premios se llevó a cabo en el Museo de Liverpool, y el equipo de Liverpool 2018, en el cual compitió el Uruguayo Nano Antía, recibió el Social Spirit Award.

Los arribos fueron sumamente emotivos ya que algunos de los competidores llevaban alrededor de un año sin ver a sus familias, como es el caso de Nano.

Del mismo modo muchos niños aguardaban ansiosos la llegada de padres que competían en la regata.

Nos complace mucho compartir con ustedes la opinión general tanto de miembros de la organización como de competidores de la regata, quienes recalcaron el excelente recibimiento que tuvieron en Punta del Este, del cual expresaron mantener muy lindos recuerdos y deseos de regresar.

Etcheverrito and Sra., in addition to the employee Jimena Hernández.

Mr. Intendant of Maldonado Ing. Enrique Antía and Mrs. Liliana Bernardez de Antía, parents of the first Uruguayan competitor Fernando “Nano” Antía, along with more relatives who attended to see him after a year since his departure, also attended.

The Commodore participated in the Clipper Race Partners Forum and in the evening the delegation of the Club attended a dinner at the fantastic Liverpool Town Hall, organized

by Clipper and Great Britain Campaign in gratitude to the Partners of the race.

The ceremony was opened by Mrs. Christine Banks, Lord Mayor Councilor of Liverpool, who introduced Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, President and co-founder of the Clipper Race, for an emotional speech about the closing of the event. After him Mrs. Tracey Crouch, MP, Minister of Sport and Civil Society spoke about the importance that these events have for the host countries.

Then the guests went to the main room to enjoy an exquisite menu with a speech by Mrs. Anna Maloney, Head of Cultural Partnerships of the Great Britain Campaign, closing the evening with words from William Ward, OBE, CEO and co-founder of the Clipper Race.

When the ships began to arrive, they could be seen navigating the Mersey River.

Wendy Tuck, from the Sanya boat, made history by becoming the first woman to win a round the world race, followed by another woman, Nikki Henderson from Visit Seattle, who is only 23 years old. The third place went to the Quingdao, Skipper Chris Kobusch.

The fleet was greeted by a large crowd surrounding the Albert Dock, where they moored the boats after a parade down the river.

The awards ceremony was held at the Liverpool Museum, and the Liverpool 2018 team, in which the Uruguayan Nano Antía competed, received the Social Spirit Award.

Arrivals were very emotional as some of the competitors had been around for a year without seeing their families, as is the case of Nano. In the same way many children anxiously waited for the arrival of parents who competed in the regatta.

We are very pleased to share with you the general opinion of both members of the organization and competitors of the regatta, who stressed the excellent reception they had in Punta del Este, which they expressed to keep very nice memories and wishes to return.

The sporting events organized by the Club and the victories won by Members flying the Club’s burgee have helped to establish the YCCS’ position at the forefront of international yachting.

En 1981, el Yacht Club Costa Smeralda lanzó el primer desafío italiano para la Copa América. Apenas dos años después, el Azzurra de 12 metros llegó a un tercer puesto triunfante en las regatas clasificatorias para las finales en Newport.

Today the YCCS enjoys reciprocal agreements with the Yacht Club di Monaco and the New York Yacht Club. The YCCS is represented by the Board of Directors headed by its President, Princess Zahra Aga Khan. The Commodore, Secretary General and Sports Director also manage the Club’s social and sporting activities.

Azzurra se convirtió en un símbolo del potencial de Italia en la navegación competitiva de alto nivel y fue seguido de cerca por los aficionados locales.

Gracias a su éxito, el primer Campeonato del Mundo de Clase 12 metros se celebró en Porto Cervo en 1984.

THE FIRST REGATTAS

Ese mismo año, el Royal Perth Yacht Club eligió al YCCS para actuar como el desafiante de la edición de 1987 de la Copa América. Como tal, el club fue responsable de coordinar los preparativos para los aspirantes a la Copa, así como de organizar las regatas de clasificación celebradas en Australia.

También participó en esta edición un barco que lucía los colores YCCS: Azzurra ‘87.

Las primeras regatas El Club hoy El Club está afiliado a la Federación Italiana de Vela desde 1968 y a la Federación Italiana de Lanchas desde 1978.

Desde su inicio, el Club tuvo como objetivo organizar regatas internacionales y, desde 1972, se llevó a cabo la primera edición de la Settimana delle Bocche. En 1973 el Club organizó la Copa One Ton y fue reconocido como el principal promotor de la navegación offshore competitiva en Italia y en el Mediterráneo.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was founded on 12th May 1967 by H.H. the Aga Khan, Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti as a non-profit making sporting association for fellow sailing enthusiasts and with a view to promoting related activities.

El YCCS organiza regatas para superyates y maxi yates, así como campeonatos mundiales y europeos para clases como la Clase J, Clase Wally, TP52, Farr 40, Melges 32, Melges 40, J70, Maxi 72, Swan 45, ClubSwan 42, ClubSwan 50 y regatas dedicadas a algunos de los constructores de barcos más exclusivos del mundo, como Perini Navi.

Además de un ocupado calendario deportivo, el YCCS también promueve el trabajo de la Escuela de Vela YCCS y la Fundación One Ocean, creada en marzo de 2018 a partir de un proyecto de sostenibilidad lanzado en 2017 para conmemorar el 50 aniversario del Club.

The Club has been affiliated with the Italian Sailing Federation since 1968 and with the Italian Powerboat Federation since 1978.

From its inception, the Club has aimed to organize international regattas and as early as 1972 the first e dition of the Settimana delle Bocche was held. In 1973 the Club organized the One Ton Cup and became recognized as the primary promoter of competitive offshore sailing in Italy and in the Mediterranean.

The first Sardinia Cup, held in 1978, marked an important step for the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in organizing annual and biennial world-class sailing events. The Sardinia Cup is held in alternate years to the famous Admiral’s Cup race in the Solent. 1980 saw the creation of two important world championships: the Maxi Yacht World Championship and the Swan World Cup. That same year saw the first ever Costa Smeralda Offshore Grand Prix while the inaugural Veteran Boat Rally was held in 1982.

THE AZZURRA YEARS In 1981 the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda launched the first Italian challenge for the America’s Cup. Just two years later the 12-Metre Azzurra came a triumphant third in the qualifying regattas for the finals in Newport.

Azzurra became a symbol for Italy’s potential in top-level competitive sailing and was followed closely by fans at home. Thanks to her success, the first 12 Metre Class World Championship was held in Porto Cervo in 1984. That same year, the Royal Perth Yacht Club chose the YCCS to act as

Challenger of Record for the 1987 edition of the America’s Cup. As such, the YCCS was responsible for coordinating preparations for the challengers for the Cup, as well as organizing the qualifying regattas held in Australia. A vessel flying YCCS colours also participated in this edition: Azzurra ‘87.

THE CLUB, TODAY The YCCS organises regattas for superyachts and maxi yachts as well as World and European Championships for classes such as the J Class, Wally Class, TP52, Farr 40, Melges 32, Melges 40, J/70, Maxi 72, Swan 45, ClubSwan 42, ClubSwan 50 as well as regattas dedicated to some of the world’s most exclusive shipbuilders such as Perini Navi.

In addition to a busy sporting calendar, the YCCS also promotes the work of the YCCS Sailing School and the One Ocean Foundation, created in March 2018 from a sustainability project launched in 2017 to mark the Club’s 50th anniversary.
