City needs

Through the 2020 Master Plan various needs were identified for the City of Garland and for the area surrounding Tuckerville Park. Overall, it was found that a park master plan should be developed for Tuckerville Park, and that it should incorporate or at least consider the following needs: • Increase population served within a 5-min drive • Multi-purpose sports complex • Walking and biking trails • Community playground space • Restroom facility Additionally, some general Citywide needs were identified: • Pickleball courts should be built • Additional tennis courts should be built to increase the level of service in Garland

Previous planning for this park was to develop a baseball and softball complex. This plan has instead developed around a tennis and pickleball complex and a multi-purpose field complex. This shift in focus is based on the needs that were identified in the City of Garland 2020 Master Plan. The tennis facility and multi-use fields serve all of Garland and provide potential tournament opportunities, while the open space, walking trail, and park amenities provide valuable park space for the neighborhoods.

Site Visits

Staff members from The City of Garland Parks Department, Fitzpatrick Architects, and MHS Planning and Design visited area tennis facilities to analyze various design and maintenance items that could be taken into consideration during the design of the Tuckerville Tennis Complex. During each visit the team was able to visit with tennis pros and facility administrators about their facilities. From these visits several design standards were able to be established, including: clubhouse needs, court orientation, landscape needs, daily maintenance, and needed accommodations for potential tennis programming. The main items that were identified were: • Build as many courts during the initial phase as possible, since this is the main source of revenue for the complex • Covered storage areas for equipment is very necessary • Quality lights, PA system, and video surveillance are very important • Covered outdoor seating (especially during rain delays and sunny days) • Shade structures for players between courts • Quality court surfacing • Windscreens and fencing between courts

Early Concept Design

In the early stages of the Bob Day Tennis Complex design process, a great deal of emphasis was placed on concept art. This preliminary phase was instrumental in exploring and visualizing different design ideas. Hand sketches were created, allowing the design team to quickly and freely experiment with various configurations and aesthetic concepts. These sketches were invaluable tools for sparking creativity, fostering collaboration, and gradually refining the vision for the complex. To complement these sketches, elevation drawings were developed to show potential grading ideas, providing a clearer understanding of how the different elements of the park could interact with the landscape. These drawings played a critical role in ensuring the project would be both visually appealing and practical in terms of usage and maintenance. Additionally, preliminary 3D conceptual renderings were created to offer a more tangible sense of the design approach. These renderings offered a more immersive view of the project, allowing the team to better understand the spatial relationships within the complex and refine the overall design development approach. This multi-faceted approach to early concept art set the stage for the thoughtful and comprehensive design of the Bob Day Tennis Complex.

Phase 1 Design

The overall site plan combines the tennis complex and multiuse sports complex together using the park trail system. The pockets of open green space and proposed trees connect the design to the existing landforms and mature trees. This design creates a unique environment that will be able to be used for large events and tournaments throughout the year, but also creates a quality neighborhood park for the surrounding area. The Park is a thoughtfully designed, modern space that caters to all needs of its visitors. From the sleek and functional pavilion with its convenient storage and comfortable furnishings, to the bustling food truck area that seamlessly opens up to the verdant picnic spots, every detail is considered. Connecting these spaces is a looping trail that invites exploration and creates a sense of unity throughout the park. The striking clubhouse, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, stands as a hub of activity and service. Finally, the terraced spectator seating, combining turf and concrete, offers an optimal and comfortable viewing experience. With these elements, the complex is more than just a place for tennis - it’s a hub of community, relaxation, and enjoyment.

For sports enthusiasts, there are new pickleball courts and additional tennis courts. Soccer fans will be thrilled to know that several soccer fields will also be added. More walkways will be built, helping people get around without crowding. Picnic areas will be updated for families to have a great time. Extra parking spaces are added so everyone can find a spot. Simple touches like new signs and planting designs are also included to keep the place looking neat and well-organized. Whether you’re looking to engage in exciting sports, take a leisurely walk, or simply enjoy a picnic with family and friends, the Phase 2 additions have something for everyone.

Tennis Courts

The main design intent of the tennis complex was to create a “campus” that would have a very enjoyable atmosphere. Areas of open lawn surround the tennis courts located off of the tree lined central walk. Trees are spaced at least 20’ from courts to avoid shade spots and falling leaves from overwhelming the courts. This space also allows for adequate root growth while also providing valuable shade. The terraced seating area utilizes artificial turf for minimal maintenance and maximum usability. Deep terraces allow for the use of large amounts of furniture to be placed for a relaxed viewing atmosphere. League play is done with three matches or five matches depending on the league. Providing a combination of two and three tennis court pods will be great for league use. Providing 24 courts in the park master plan raises the level of service for the area, but also ensures that future needs can be met. A pod of two tennis courts is great for spectators, and it can be useful for league play. Pods of three courts can be more cost effective and they are also great for league play. Pods of 4 courts are great for junior practices and summer camps.

Spectator Seating

The terraced seating area is carefully designed for optimal viewing and is a testament to modern simplicity. The seating combines both turf and concrete surfaces, offering a unique and comfortable way to enjoy the tennis matches. The turf seating brings a touch of nature to the spectator experience, providing a soft and cool spot to sit, especially during warmer days. Meanwhile, the concrete seating is robust and practical, ensuring a sturdy place to enjoy the game. This combination creates a versatile and appealing seating area that enhances the enjoyment of watching tennis at the complex. Whether you’re a tennis enthusiast or a casual visitor, the terraced seating area provides a comfortable and enjoyable viewing experience

Whether you’re looking for a place to rest your feet or a scenic spot for lunch, the picnic area is the perfect choice. Connecting all of this is the looping trail, a winding path that ties the complex together. The trail invites visitors to take a leisurely walk, enjoy the greenery, and explore the different areas of the park. Whether you’re headed to a tennis match, the pavilion, or the food trucks, the trail ensures you’re only a pleasant walk away.

A dry creek bed in the center serves as an eye-catching focal point, creating a warm and welcoming first impression. This drop-off area not only offers practicality but also contributes to the overall aesthetics of the complex, reinforcing the park’s commitment to combining function with beauty.
