Top Three Answers: Soccer (25%), General Games/Play (25%), and Swings (22%)

Lowest Answers: Nine Square, Dancing, Merry-Go-Round, Sand Box, and Mobility Toys (all 4%)

Since this first question was a free response, we received a wide variety of feedback, with a total of 27 different categories after sorting through all the answers. It’s worth noting that there are a few answers that were combined for the sake of including all responses, while maintaining more specific or broad categorization as needed.

Students displayed a wide range of interest in outdoor activities; however, we did see an emphasis on activities or features involving motor skills and open spaces. The most reported answers typically involved sports, games, or improvements to the playground that added variety to play.

Top Three Answers: Games (76%), Sports (56%), and Rest (56%)

This question was not open ended, and provided 10 activities for students to circle, indicating that they enjoyed participating in. Students were allowed to choose as many as they liked.

Once again, responses demonstrated a preference for physical activities, especially open space-oriented ones, however this time more students indicated that they enjoyed restful pursuits as well. While more creative activities were similarly represented, the students seemed to emphasize the importance of active play and spaces to recharge.

3. REPORTED STAFF AND PARENT NEEDS FOR OUTDOOR SPACE

This question was open-ended, and for each response there were also spaces to include who and how often the space would be used. Overall, most staff and parents reported that the suggestions would be used by the community, students, and staff very frequently. After narrowing down the responses, there ended up being 7 general categories.

Overall, staff and parents seemed to prioritize the playground as an area for educational purposes, while still maintaining the physical functionality of it. It was also indicated that they wanted the space to be safe and accessible. They wanted it to serve dual roles in education and active play for the students, in both guided and unguided manners.

This question was also open ended; however, many responses were the same. After sorting through the answers, we narrowed it down to 6 main areas of importance.

A very large portion of responses indicated that the area where staff and parents were most focused on was the field. Compared to other portions of the playground with designated purposes and better conditions, the field remains underutilized. There’s a variety of reasons spaces might be unused, with most responses indicating a lack of function or environmental factors.

5. STAFF AND PARENT IDENTIFIED SPACES THAT SHOULD BE ENHANCED BUT NOT REMOVED

Top Answer: Field (50%)

After going through the answers, we found 5 main spaces of focus that were relatively the same across the board.

It’s worth noting that despite one answer being None, all participants clarified that everything should be updated or revitalized, they just believe the space should maintain its original primary function. This sentiment follows through all areas and implies that the field is the strongest example of this.
