PICKING

Prebbleton

Being the first residents to move into a brand-new retirement village and buying off plans is not for everyone, but for Summerset Prebbleton’s residents, Ann and Brian O’Neill the decision couldn’t have been easier.

O

riginally Ann and Brian’s search for a retirement village began on behalf of Brian’s widowed cousin, the pair thought moving into one themselves would be a lot further down the track. That was until the search lead them to the site of Brian’s former workplace to check out the progress of Summerset Prebbleton, being built on the old Meadow Mushrooms site.

their new neighbours with open arms, ensuring they get to know them at various events.

“We happened to be looking through the fence during construction, and Brian remarked “That one will be our villa there,” said Ann. “That’s when we started to have a serious conversation about bringing the move forward. We ended up buying off plan.”

The freedom of retirement living has been made more special by the Summerset Prebbleton team “going the extra mile” and with home maintenance taken care of there’s nothing holding them back. “There’s no climbing ladders, it’s cheaper here than to own as there’s no rates, no maintenance.” Knowing their home is safe and secure with friendly neighbours and an amazing village team keeping an eye on things, gives Ann and Brian the confidence to relax and enjoy their motorhome adventures.

During their hunt with Brian’s cousin, the couple had visited the Summerset at Avonhead village several times and were struck by how comfortable they felt there. “We just felt right at home and got a really nice vibe from the place.” said Brian. “We had no qualms about buying off the plans for Prebbleton because Avonhead showed us what the village would be like and what the facilities would be when they all came in. Everything with Summerset was seamless, (even the) contract was in good, plain English.”

“We actually didn’t have any expectations around the social side,” remarks Brian. “We thought we were just getting a house but it’s like going to a resort that you bring your own furniture to!”

If you’re interested in finding out more about the village, get in touch with Grace today on 03 353 6312.

The village’s origins as a farming site appealed to the pair, who appreciate the rural surroundings. Being the first residents to move into the village, the thrill of a new chapter set in from night one. “It was a little weird!” says Ann. “That first night once the staff went home, we had the whole place to ourselves and we wandered around enjoying the space.” The couple were the only residents for about a week before neighbours came to join them. Having had first choice of homes, Brian and Ann selected to live next to the home temporarily being used for the village events and Happy Hour. “A short stroll from all the fun!” As the inaugural residents, Ann and Brian welcome summerset.co.nz/prebbleton

Editor's Note

EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Fireworks Guy Fawkes went off with a bang as usual earlier this month. Along with it came an assortment of missing and traumatised animals, fires, injuries, and calls for its abolition. While I enjoy fireworks displays, and sparklers especially, I’m not a fan of uncontrolled crackers, snaps, smoke balls, fountains, rockets, and wheels. Rather I’m not a fan of those who light them up at odd hours of the day and night, indiscriminately firing them off in all directions, both

in the lead up to, and for several days and weeks after 5 November. “Bah humbug”, you might think, but you’d be wrong. A recent survey, conducted by AA Insurance, found that 53% of those surveyed want to see backyard fireworks banned for recreational use, with a further 20% wanting to see them banned altogether. Animal welfare, fire risk, injuries, social disruption, and irresponsible use were people’s main reasons for wanting to see them prohibited. Many of those who light up the sky don’t even know who Guy Fawkes was, or what he did, so why bother to celebrate the occasion. Kiwis have many significant events of their own to commemorate, and some unique cultural and social activities that could easily replace Guy Fawkes. The coming days will see our city go off with a more memorable bang thanks to the foresight of those involved with planning and hosting Cup and Show Week. Christchurch will come alive day and night with all manner of entertainment, and fun for all ages. Food, music, trots and gallops, and the iconic New Zealand Agricultural Show are all on the agenda during the next two weeks, so get out there and enjoy what’s on offer. Celebrate the good things in life with good times for one and all.

O

ne of New Zealand’s most prominent headwear designers and owner of Seventh & Figg, Susi’s career began with her love for fashion and headwear. Initially the difficulty in finding hats that resonated with her style led Suzi to explore the art of hat-making. In her early 20s, she embarked on crafting her own headwear for personal use. This modest start eventually blossomed into a flourishing career, where she began creating eye-catching bespoke headpieces for clients. The success of Susi’s craft lies in her ability to create custom headpieces that become expressions of individuality. For her long-standing clients, she has developed an understanding of their preferences, be it bold and daring, or classic and timeless. Clients may bring their own ideas to the table, or the process might start from scratch. Time is spent exploring diverse options, from hat styles and bases to feathers, florals, and headbands. When it comes down to it, the client’s outfit acts as the compass, guiding the way towards a final headpiece that harmonises with the overall ensemble. One may wonder where Susi gets her inspiration from. “Often, from the materials I source from all around the world. Little embellishments that make the headpieces special and unique,” she says. It’s a passion she can’t switch off, a driving force that fuels her innovation, enabling her to craft exquisite eye-catching designs, that are annually offered exclusively to WORLD. In the 2022 Spring Fashion in the Field competition,

Susi, wearing her own millinery and outfit, was judged overall women’s winner. IThat year, Susi also styled the men’s fashion winner,Sam Schwartfeger. Winning those awards quickly made her an expert in capturing the attention of judges. For readers eager to navigate the world of millinery, especially with Cup Week fashion shows around the corner, Susi offers some sage advice. “Always wear a hat or headpiece that you feel comfortable in. If you are getting a headpiece made for the first time, start small, and then let your confidence grow.” She believes that there is a hat or headpiece for everyone; it’s just a matter of finding the one that resonates with your style. She also adds, “When you create with a milliner, make it clear whether you want a statement piece or something subtle?” As Susi has often witnessed, many clients who initially believed they were not “headpiece people” ultimately co-create something stunning together. Susi’s mantra: “There is a hat for everyone.”

Cartoonist ’s slice of heaven Farmer, rugby player, and much-loved cartoonist, Murray Ball has been brought to life in a new book by his son Mason.

M

urray Ball: A Cartoonist’s Life, written by Mason Ball is a warm and humorous first biography of Murray. It tells the story of how Murray became the leading cartoonist of his generation, how his endearing characters evolved, and the long years of hard graft that went into wildly successful creative enterprise, Footrot Flats. From his unique viewpoint and with candid honesty, Mason reveals the real-life backstory to Murray’s most iconic characters and themes, telling the story of the man, and father, who could see the quirks of human nature and capture them with the stroke of a pen. ‘It was not really until my father died that I reflected on his remarkable life, and when I did, my impulse was to record what I knew, as a testament to him. I found that writing helped me sort through my feelings and soothed the pain of loss. I missed him dearly and enjoyed cataloguing moments I had witnessed and which we had shared. I figured that, joined up, these might form a portrait of the person, not just the cartoonist,” says Mason.

“Footrot Flats would likely dominate a biography written by someone else. I wanted something more for my dad. I wanted Footrot Flats to be part – but not the only part – of his epitaph.” Mason was born in 1966 and grew up in Gisborne on the farm that would inspire some of New Zealand’s most beloved and iconic comic strips, introducing readers worldwide to characters such Dog, Jess, Horse, Cheeky Hobson, and Rangi. Mason has worked as a journalist, audio sub-editor, and English language teacher. He lives with his wife, Kuniko, and their three children in Wellington, where he enjoys painting, collage, and jazz.

Mason will be hosting book events in Timaru and Lake Tekapo on 22 and 23 November respectively.

Resilience expert

Dr Lucy Hone 12 November 9, 2023 Metropol

O

riginally from London, Lucy found herself making Ōtautahi Christchurch home to be closer to family. In 2008, she was drawn to psychology when she “became concerned at the number of people I knew who were struggling with their mental health”. Her curiosity for the subject led her to the University of Pennsylvania, where she pursued a Masters degree in resilience psychology, becoming a part of the 5th cohort in 2009. When she returned to Christchurch in the wake of the devastating February 2011 earthquakes, she began the practical application of her knowledge, helping communities cope in the aftermath. Lucy often refers to herself as a ‘pracademic’; her PhD from AUT’s Human Potential Centre is in public health with the specific aim of helping people build resilience at a population level. “Resilience is such a powerful capacity that can help all of us steer through (and learn from) tough times. It’s not a fixed trait, it’s not even that elusive. Instead, it’s a life force that resides within us all, encouraging us to believe in better days ahead, learn what works for us when we’re struggling, and reach out for help when we need it instead of hunkering down and getting isolated.” In a world where most academic research stays within academia; Lucy is dedicated to bridging the gap between psychology research and practice in a variety of ways - sharing research-backed insights through books, podcasts, keynotes, and blog posts. During Covid-19, her 2020 TED talk, 3 Secrets of Resilient People, went viral and became one of the top 20 most-watched TED talks of the year. Through the Institute, she partners with leading multinational corporations and their HR teams to build resilience at work, working across 80 territories globally. Through her hugely popular Coping with Loss programme, Lucy and her team support people navigating loss with a variety of programmes offered across Aotearoa and internationally online. Her latest research aims to grow what she calls “grief literacy”. “There’s such a fear of saying the wrong thing when something’s coping with loss. We want to help anyone dealing

with any kind of loss get the help they most need, so we’re currently running research asking the bereaved what help they need most,” she says. She’s also working on two more books as a follow up to her best-seller, Resilient Grieving. One of them aims to explore the topic of post-traumatic growth and lessons learnt from loss fusing her knowledge of research on the topic with case studies from her clients. “Most people have heard of post-traumatic stress, but post-traumatic growth is much less talked about yet science shows most people grow and change from loss. We see this in our work all the time, people telling us how their relationships have changed, how much stronger they were than they thought, how living through adversity has changed what they value, their priorities and purpose. It’s such fascinating work, I feel hugely lucky to be doing it,” she says.

Dr. Lucy’s top tips for those wanting more resilience in their personal lives: 1 Dial back perfectionism Research shows that the constant aim for perfection is damaging to your psychological health and costly to relationships, productivity and learning. 2 Learn to say no Consider the opportunity costs of saying yes: something/ someone else is now going to get less of you. 3 Notice where you typically put your attention and ask yourself, is what you are focusing it on harming or helping you?

Learn more about building resilience from her social media accounts (@drlucyhone), or visit her website copingwithloss.co, and if you haven’t seen her TED Talk yet, now is the time.

g n i t pain the town

When the Christchurch earthquakes hit, our city became rubble and ruin. People rallied from far and wide to help, among them several artists. Metropol writer Nina Tucker talks to one of them.

I

n February 2011, each broken building and empty wall became a reminder of what once was. Until it wasn’t. Jacob Yikes was one of many street artists breathing life back into the city, a banded-together hive of creativity, uplifting those locals who had watched their homes crumble beneath their feet. “Everything was being pulled down. It was crying out for colour.” Jacob said Christchurch needed it. The energy, the vibrancy, in a dark transitional period. “It was something people weren’t expecting, and hadn’t seen before.” Now, Christchurch has become a street art hotspot, for tourists and locals alike, and is fast gaining international acclaim. As he collaborated with other artists on the project From The Ground Up, and was involved in many others as an artist to support the city’s growth, what he didn’t expect was that it would do the same for him. Christchurch-born and raised, using his art for a cause was the way forward. Jacob’s career catapulted following the earthquakes, to the stage where he became a full-time artist in 2012; something he’d never seen as a possibility prior. The city’s opinion on public art changed, and opportunities began presenting themselves. “It’s really cool to be a part of. I’ve been there from the beginning,” Jacob mentioned. The surge in street art meant more festivals. Artists across the country and globe travelled to Christchurch to create colourful murals on walls through the damaged central city, and further afield. Christchurch soon became an artists’ haven, and Jacob was painting alongside people he admired. Subsequently, his repertoire and reputation flourished. “It wasn’t an easy feat,” he recalls. “My first piece on a wall, I was 17 or 18.” At 36, he’s learned a lifetime of art techniques, styles, and the ability to cater for the preferences of those who commission him, while maintaining his own unique flair. The components of his work (surrealism, abstraction, and contemporary design) Jacob largely draws from the subconscious mind to create those artworks

that line the walls of Christchurch. He keeps it balanced. Commission work is common, but his brain stays busy, scouting derelict city spots, and inventing something new. “I take in the area and figure out something that will work.” He adds that the more experience, the better an artist understands composition and refinements, but, it’s still “often freestyle.” Full-time painting was only ever “effectively a dream,” to Jacob, yet he saw potential in making it work from a young age. When Cashmere High School’s art programme opened a laneway into the industry for serious consideration, Jacob jumped and spent three years studying for his diploma in fine arts. Art is interpretive, and Jacob adds that most of his street work was self-taught. “The best teacher is just doing it.” It wasn’t until he stretched far out of his comfort zone and realised he could do it well, that making a living from it became reality. In Jacob’s household, amongst the canvas and paint cans, his two children live in awe of their dad’s work and often spend time with him in his home studio. It’s become second nature, Jacob and his daughter, Jet, even produced a piece of art during Christchurch Airport’s Pride Week. Embarking on his next project, Jacob’s work will be found in installations scattered throughout the city during the Little Street Art Festival, in collaboration with artist Ghostcat.

Turning point Ernest Rutherford (pictured above) was Jacob’s first work of realism on such a large scale. It was such a challenge convincing himself he could do it; he now calls it a “turning point” in his approach to work. The piece, on Colombo St, stretches over 70 metres in length and six metres in height.

rare opportunity to view one of Canterbury’s finest farming properties, two consecutive open days at Kaiwara Homestead in Culverden will also benefit the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, with proceeds from the weekend. The homestead’s history began 146 years ago when Walter Macfarlane was gifted 25,700 acres of boundary fenced land, comprising tussock hills and one flat paddock, from his father, John Macfarlane. The property lay 10 minutes west of Culverden, and 20-year-old Walter had big plans in mind for it. The homestead was first built in 1886 and completed around 1900. Although Victorian in style, it was also built to withstand the extremes of a North Canterbury climate. Modernised over the ensuing years, the homestead retains more-or-less the same shape and aspect as of 1900. It now comprises nine bedrooms, four bathrooms, and spacious living areas. Kaiwara Homestead was considered one of the most premier showpiece gardens of the Amuri region at that time. The grounds, then and now, encompass some three acres, with several specimen trees planted before 1900. Typical of gardens established during this era, the landscaping followed traditional English garden design, with a predominance of roses gracing the scene. It is believed Walter’s wife, Minnie, who loved working in her garden, was responsible for it’s initial layout. Around 1910, Kaiwara employed three gardeners, a cowman gardener, two housemaids and a cook. The grounds also had two tennis courts, a potting shed and a fernery of exotic plants. The fernery had its own well, with a boiler to heat it. Both the potting shed and fernery have been recently restored. The 12-stand woolshed was built in the early 1900s

(with some original gates still in use) and having been re-piled in the 1970s, remains a solid structure today. The cookhouse is thought to have been built soon after the woolshed. It has also been restored to its original footprint. Four bedrooms, a log-fire burner, and an ensuite have been incorporated into the restoration, making it an ideal self-contained retreat. Electricity for the homestead was generated from a water turbine, fed from two small reservoirs, channelled down from the valleys north and south of the house. In its heyday, Kaiwara carried 30,000 merino sheep and was the first registered merino stud in New Zealand. By the time the estate was sold in the 1970s, it had deteriorated considerably and required major refurbishment. Bruce and Audrey Johns bought Kaiwara in 1996, and now their two sons oversee it. The farm comprises 1300 hectares, and carries 1300 sheep, 600 pedigree Angus cattle, and 1100 milking cows. Today’s green spaces of Kaiwara boast stone pathways, majestic trees, rustic garden sculptures, a vegetable garden, and a rose that has climbed to an impressive height of around twenty metres. Bruce, who is described by his daughter, Anna Deans, as ‘a spritely 80-year-old’, has been working the garden for the past six months in readiness for the big event. The Johns family have had strong links with Cholmondeley Children’s Centre over the years, a cause dear to their hearts. This is the first time the open day has occurred in the history of Kaiwara Homestead, so the event is of deep significance to them. Visitors are welcome to picnic in the grounds and browse part of the homestead, the fernery, potting shed and cookhouse, and children are welcome to feed the ducks, geese, peacocks, and pet lambs. As well as live music, a talk on Kaiwara will happen at 11am and 2pm each day.

ENDLESS ENTERTAINMENT The entertainment scene in Christchurch is quickly growing. One space in particular is catching the eye of many Cantabrians for a fun night out.

Y

ou don’t need any skills or to be overly able, just a little bit of optimism to hit the bullseye, serve well, and crack the code. Codebreakers boasts three incredible areas of entertainment, wellexecuted and exhilarating escape rooms, DUEL darts with cutting-edge technology, and Serve Ping Pong Club. Three choices for endless excitement.

It brings a new level of interactive activities to the city, and the variety means you can bring your children, your parents and grandparents, your work team, your best friends, or your date. Owner Logan McMillan said the journey into making such an energetic and inviting entertainment space, where all ages and abilities could enjoy themselves, was natural. He wanted to help people make memories, and the free photobooth

following an activity means participants can take those good times home. To restore that energy output, the on-site bar serves pizzas and a range of drinks, and food and drink packages. It’s within walking distance to the city’s best eateries including The Terrace, Little High, and Riverside Market, so there’s no worrying about where you’ll eat afterwards.

hy not opt for a change in scenery where the conformities of four walls don’t exist, and head to a local beach. With the family all in one place, there’s plenty of fun to be had, loads of space, and a Christchurch summer means there’s a variety of locations on offer. Following the morning’s gift-giving festivities, fill a hamper with French Champagne, Kaikōura crayfish, and chocolate strawberries (or chocolate fish) for dessert and take the family to a favourite beach or park. Trade eggnog for Pina Coladas, and traditional games for volleyball. Don’t forget your deckchairs, Christmas crackers, sunscreen, and maybe even a good book (or the latest issue of Metropol), and spend the day relaxing. It’s the same recipe as normal, but with more sun comes more fun. Eat, drink and be merry into the warm evening, the sound of satisfied laughter and crashing waves filling the air. Task the children with crafting a driftwood Christmas tree and draping it with Christmas lights; a lovely end to a relaxing family Christmas. While it’s reasonable to expect a sunny day, we recommend keeping your options open to the possibility of rain or a drop in temperature. If that happens, how about a “white Christmas”. Sip on Belgian hot chocolate, bake and decorate cookies, and snuggle up and reminisce with a Christmas movie, or 10. There are hundreds out there, although some are more memorable than others; an ideal cold Christmas pick-me-up.

anting to share some of its uniquely curated honey, much of it destined for international markets, Springbank Honey established ‘The Hive’ a café and shop for locals. “To enjoy beautiful coffee and food, and have the opportunity to experience our delicious honey,” says spokesperson Tracy Brown. Some of the honey on offer can only be produced in New Zealand; floral flavours such as pōhutukawa, rata, kamahi, rewarewa, and the golden prize of them all, manuka. “What we are currently buzzing about is our organic manuka honey,” says Tracy. “This is manuka that is grown on our family farm, hidden in the mountain highlands of Canterbury. This speaks to our passion of producing the absolute best honey, free from chemicals, pesticides, or any man-made substances that can be hidden in our foods today. “You can be assured that it is certified and is independently tested to ensure absolute pure quality. To finish it all off, Steven [co-owner Steven Brown], ever the perfectionist, insists on the flavour being nothing short of delicious. “We encourage you to come and taste our distinct types of honey before choosing your favourite. “We’re 30 minutes from Christchurch and under 15 minutes from Rangiora; the perfect distance to get away from the city bustle and savouring a cup of coffee, sitting in the sun enjoying our beautiful mountain views.”

Among the choices are varieties of maples, standard wisteria and stunning kaizukas, sculptured niwaki “cloud formation” pruning style, to name a few. “For advice on placing or planting your tree, we have a vast knowledge, so are always happy to help.” The couple also sell their own line of soy triple-scented candles, amazing cow skins, plenty of indoor plants, and other gifts. High-end industry knowledge, an unparalleled passion for business diversity, and the energy to match his grandchildren, means it is always ‘business as usual’ for Athol and the team. He says now is a fortuitous time to invest in business, as commercial property markets settle into a ‘new normal’, and New Zealand tourism has an estimated $15 billion spend forecast. Together these developments mean that the potential for business ventures to be converted into positive investments arises, he says. “We have the experience and experts in this field, a strong reputation for service excellence, and an investment team worth betting on,” he adds. If you are looking to buy or sell commercial real estate talk to Athol and fellow broker Cecilia Xiao.

Q: How is the purchase of plant A:

or chattels handled when buying a business?

Plant or chattels of a business are usually termed “Tangible Assets” in the sale/purchase process. Usually a Tangible Assets list is attached to the agreement, or there is a clause in the agreement requiring the Vendor to supply a list to be approved by the Purchaser as part of the process. A Purchaser should check the list to ensure all items expected to be included are there. The Vendor needs to ensure the items on the list are in good working order – a Purchaser may reject any item which

Brand vs performance

In the battle of bland versus boring, bland and boring won the election!

This month I’m going to break down the key differences between brand and performance marketing.

N

ational and their partner/s will move quickly to remove some of the ideological based legislation that Labour brought in. Fair Pay Agreements will be scrapped; the restraint of trade bill will be dropped, and the 90 day trial period looks set to be extended to all employers. Proposed changes to maternity leave sound sensible, and are sure to be supported by Act, given that the changes allow parents to have more say over who needs leave and when - all being about individual choice. You’d have to be incredibly optimistic to think the minimum wage is going to move in this term, which does have an ideological basis to it. In the fantasy land of Act, we all have equal opportunity to better ourselves, and so if you want to earn more money, get more skills and do it. Act, more than National, want to make various changes to how the Employment Relations Authority (ERA)works. Some ideas are plainly stupid, such as requiring decisions from the ERA within a month. They can’t meet the current timeframe of three months, so reducing that timeframe will achieve nothing. But I would love to see accountability for ERA members. For example, the ERA member most successfully appealed within their three-year-term should not have their employment renewed. As it is now some ERA members are successfully appealed far more than others and yet somehow retain their position. I won’t hold my breath.

B

oth are just as crucial as each other, but there are a few key differences to keep in mind when choosing the right channel to market down and what to expect.

1. Brand marketing is all about creating awareness and desire in the consumers mind so that when they’re considering on purchasing, your brand is top of mind. Building your brand awareness takes time, and if you’re a small business (or even just starting out) this requires a sustained, long-term effort. Your campaigns have got to be consistent, don’t change them too frequently. Channels such as print marketing, organic social media and display ads on websites are areas you should target to drive brand awareness. 2. Performance marketing is all about creating campaigns to drive sales. The beauty of this is that when utilising digital marketing you can track the analytics of your performance and make any necessary adjustments. Performance marketing requires more attention, as things won’t always work the first time. Utilise Facebook/Instagram adverts for B2C and LinkedIn for B2B. Google adverts and email marketing are also other great channels to drive sales. Both brand and performance marketing require patience. My advice would be not to overreact if a particular campaign doesn’t work the first time. Brand marketing requires consistency, ensuring your brand is always recognisable, while performance marketing may require a little more trial and error to get things right. Both have got to work cohesively together. Call me today to get your marketing on track.

Moving forward

With the stress of the election behind us, for Kiwi families it is back to the hard task of managing the cost of living, and high interest rates.

Work is about what you do, and not where you do it, as the last few years have shown.

A

s the new government takes the reins, we anticipate changes in the property investment landscape. Property investors are likely to re-enter the market, and it is highly likely that they’ll be competing with first home buyers, particularly for properties valued below the 650k mark. It is also important to highlight the recent closure of the Kainga Ora First Home Partnership due to overwhelming interest. This development underscores the increasing number of first home buyers, and the current stock in the market indicates that there’s plenty more demand to come. However, it’s worth noting that Kainga Ora continues to support first-home ownership through the First Home Loan and First Home Grant programmes, providing viable methods for aspiring homeowners. The cost of living is an ever-present concern for us all, and it’s important to note that while interest rates are relatively high now, we remain optimistic about the market’s stability as we transition from the vibrant spring season into the summer months. If you’re contemplating selling and buying, or looking to leverage the equity in your existing property for an investment upgrade, consider NZ Mortgages your go-to advisers in Canterbury. Planning and consent experts A

Navigating planning consent in the constantly evolving landscape of resource management has become increasingly complex and uncertain.

specialist planning service, vUrbs are experts at helping architects, engineers, builders, property developers, and owners with up-to-date planning expertise from the get-go of their projects.“In all projects, we recognise the need for responsible stewardship of urban, recreational, and rural landscapes which often involves balancing economic development with environmental performance,” says director Vishal Chandra. The projects vUrbs have helped deliver, range from commercial and residential properties, community facilities, walkways, cycleways, and land rezoning, to placemaking projects for safety, beautification, and economic regeneration.

Expertise in the ever-changing Resource Management Act (RMA)

The RMA is continually undergoing changes in the form of amendments to the national, regional, and local planning regulations and rules. Specific consent is potentially now more complicated due to these changes, and various frameworks. vUrbs understands all the intricacies of the RMA, including local bylaws, and information expectations from councils, and they will help you navigate these to ensure final consent is granted.

Cost savings

“By avoiding costly delays and extra work due to regulatory noncompliance or opposition, we can help you save money in the long run; our expertise can lead to more cost-effective planning and development.”

Risk mitigation and peace of mind

vUrbs will identify potential risks and challenges in your planning application early on and provide strategies to mitigate them. They provide peace of mind that your project is in capable hands. You can focus on other aspects of your project while the team secures your planning approval.

Project Success

“Getting the best outcome for a client or project owner is our goal. We help ensure that your planning application is successful,” Vishal adds. vUrbs offers its services across Aotearoa with their South Island offices in Christchurch and Queenstown. Vishal is available for a complimentary consultation, call him today on 027 886 4181.

Efficiency

Planning applications can be time-consuming and require extensive documentation. “Our experts can streamline the process, ensuring that all paperwork is submitted correctly and promptly,” says Vishal.

POWERFUL 25 YEARS

Metropol has partnered with many of Canterbury’s successful and longstanding businesses during the past 25 years. As we celebrate this milestone, we want to highlight some of the people who have trusted us to provide a direct line to their customers. To our valued clients and readers, we extend our heartfelt gratitude, and eagerly anticipate bringing you many more exciting magazines in the future. A huge thank you.

“We have advertised and had editorials with Metropol since we started our business 18 years ago. The magazine has helped share our message about looking after your skin and made our name recognisable as a long-established and reliable clinic. We have a longstanding relationship with Lorraine, who looks after us and ensures we get our message out to new and existing clients in the best way possible, and in time with events that affect our business, which is invaluable to us. Often our clients will bring in our editorial or advertisement from Metropol to discuss the treatment on offer, which makes us realise its impact. Congratulations on your milestone Metropol.”

“Terra Viva Home & Garden/Café opened at almost the same time as Metropol started publication. The happy partnership has continued ever since with advertising for both the garden department and the homewares section, plus regular editorials. Metropol has consistently shown flair, creativity, and professional standards in its photography, layouts, use of colour and fonts, and eye-catching copy. We’ve enjoyed watching its style evolve over the years. The team has been a pleasure to work with, always willing to support what we’re trying to achieve in terms of reaching our market. Their patience with late past-due-date ads and editorials has been exemplary! We wish the Metropol team all the best for the next 25 years!”

“Our first article with Metropol, ‘A man is not a financial plan’ was in the 25 November 2020 issue. We received great feedback, and we’ve had regular, well-received advertisements since. I believe being consistent and frequent with our messaging has been effective. All articles in Metropol are interesting and topical, and from day one we’ve had consistent enquiries with past and present editorials and ads which we’re thrilled about. Metropol magazine is high quality and widely circulated across Canterbury, and the team are amazing. Professional, friendly and easy to engage with, particularly Charlie’s professionalism and Ian’s creativity. I have enjoyed being associated with Metropol, congratulate them on 25 years of producing a wonderful magazine, and wish them every success for the next 25 years.”

“E

very woman is special, and deserves to be treated with respect, which is something all our staff are mindful of,” she says. Linda launched Magazine Designer Clothing in 2006; from that one store, the business expanded to 12 stores throughout New Zealand, including Christchurch. At the heart of the business is what Linda describes as the “Magazine experience” – where every customer receives exceptional VIP service. “We love helping women feel confident and beautiful in their clothing choices.” Fondly referring to the business as “one big family”, Linda says the Christchurch team are fabulous and all are expert stylists. “We offer clothing from sizes 10 to 26, and from casual wear – jeans and t-shirts – through to fabulous formal wear. Our carefully curated styles come in limited quantities, ensuring customers of exclusivity.” With Christmas functions coming up, finding that glam outfit starts here. Accessories, such as fascinators, hats, bags, and jewellery make this the ideal cornucopia for an unforgettable festive season. “We are really excited about our spring/summer collections. Lots of gorgeous colours and natural fibres. Definitely a treasure trove and something for everyone.”

Top it off

Canterbury Cup and Show Week is one chance we get to bring our wildest fashion fantasies to life.

V

oluptuous silhouettes, prints, embellishments, and exciting colours, the cup week ‘carpet’ has seen some iconic looks. When we’re up to our ears in fabric and frills, it can be hard to know when to stop, one extra garment, more jewellery, a hat? Hats have so much power. An extravagant hat can become the centrepeice of a look and a simple hat can be the ‘cherry on top’, to craft a fabulously chic outfit. Elegance is elitist, and it’s important to remember that if your outfit is busy, a clean hat might be the trick to add effortless sophistication. A bold colour does a lot of heavy lifting, and extensions are not always needed. With a simple ribbon, your outfit carries cohesion and a flirty charm. High-quality fabric gives a beautiful outfit a sharp, polished finish.

When summer arrives, we start to unwind and enjoy a lower maintenance lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean your skincare routine should too.

I

n summer, it is crucial to protect and care for your skin due to intense sunlight and higher temperatures. Katie McIndoe of Transform Clinic Merivale recommends “tailored clinical treatments to help keep skin hydrated and radiant over the often dry summer season, as well as daily SPF applications.” While laser treatments and IPL are very effective for reducing signs of sun-damage, these are best completed during winter, she advises. During warmer seasons, active treatments, such as Vitamin C Infusion, microneedling, platelet-rich plasma, and injectable skin boosters, will enhance and prolong your summer glow. “The Sonophoresis – Vitamin C Infusion, in conjunction with our injectable moisturiser Profhilo, is another treatment that hydrates skin, softens fine lines and wrinkles, and enhances the glow,” Katie says. “Sonophoresis is a safe and non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to increase skin permeability. “The Profhilo is a bio-stimulant, administered immediately after this treatment to target the deeper skin layers, stimulating collagen and elastin production. “With the lead up to Christmas, book your bespoke treatment now at Transform Clinic Merivale with our experienced team to ensure your skin feels and looks its very best.”

Match your show week makeup We’ve all heard of the sandwich method, making sure the colours on your feet match the colours on your chest.

A

t the races, the rules change. We swim in a sea of dresses and have to reach higher, to the face, to pull together a colourful look that works. When we think of colour on the face, we think lips, eyes. Never forget the power of a good base or blush. Consider the undertones of your skin and choose your base layer accordingly. Warm it up with bronzer and blush, while keeping a natural sheen overall. A wellmatched blush becomes the focal point of a look when it unites each colour.

transformclinic.co.nz 44 November 9, 2023 Metropol

fashion & beauty

Tying in a bold coloured or printed dress seems a dreadful task, but a simple blue liner matches a blue dress, or a red lip with a striking red dress. Creating cohesion through small pops of colour will help your look become full, instead of multiple separate aspects. Some colours, like sage greens, can be difficult to match and often finding the perfect shade of a colour is even harder. In this situation, opt for naturally complementing and versatile colours, such as golds and neutrals. Build up a strong, lively base if your outfit consists of neutral or muted hues. A face of makeup to match a print or floral pattern can be as easy as soft pinks and glittery golds, these warm colours keep the face bright without becoming overwhelmed.

Hot tip When in doubt, apply balance. With a heavy smoky eye, pick pale lips. If you’ve gone for a bold pop on the lips, keep the eyes lighter.

DR LIBBY

says...

When you eat sugary foods, do you struggle to stop?

P

eople regularly share that once they start eating something sweet, it feels impossible to stop. Or, that when they try to reduce their sugar intake, their tastebuds have other plans. Often, they feel ashamed of this and berate themselves for eating more than intended. However, it’s not a lack of willpower driving this. There are biochemical reasons why sugary foods and drinks are so desirable and why it can feel so hard to stop after a small taste. Humans have grown to love the sweet stuff. Historically, bitter foods were dangerous, sometimes poisonous, but sugar is rich in energy and provides the fuel that our brains need. In recent decades, food has been more abundant. Yet, it wasn’t that long ago that food shortages were a key threat to our survival. In a world where food may be scarce, it makes sense for us to be drawn to, seek out and eat more of the sugary, quick and energy-filling foods. In today’s world, with an abundance of processed foods high in concentrated sugars, this evolutionary quirk has negative consequences. Dopamine is released in our brain when we consume sugary foods and drinks, signalling our brain’s reward system. Consistently over consuming sugar means constant activation and our brain adapts. We build up a tolerance which might be why you find yourself desiring more and more sugar for that feel-good response. The way sugar affects our brain contributes to why it can be so challenging to change our habits and reduce our sugar intake. Consider shifting your mindset to focus on increasing whole foods in your diet, rather than decreasing processed foods. Amp up your intake of leafy greens, more bitter foods

can help to reduce a preference for very sweet tastes. Getting to the heart of emotional drivers causing your excess sweet choices is a great place to start. Sometimes, taking a break can help our brains to reset. Remember, your brain adapts when you start to over consume sugar, and there’s a period of adaptation when you reduce your intake, too. Be kind and patient to yourself, changing habits isn’t easy, but the rewards are so worth it.

Growing families F

ertility: the ‘f’ word. It’s an intensely sensitive subject and personal to more couples than society normalises. One in six couples will struggle to conceive naturally, and while fertility issues are gaining awareness and support nationwide, there’s no doubt it’s a harrowing thing to experience. Dr Natalie Burger has dedicated the past 16 years of her life to helping couples achieve their dreams. “We help grow families,” Natalie says in a nutshell, her job makes pregnancies happen where they aren’t happening naturally. The Infertility Specialist declared there’s a variety of reasons, both on the male and female side, why infertility occurs. Sometimes, it’s inexplicable, Natalie calls it a “puzzle” and that’s where Fertility Associates come in. There’s everything from medication to surgeries and sometimes lots of appointments in-between, so it’s often advisable to seek treatment earlier rather than later. Fertility Associates also partners with different providers to offer remote testing services for patients, to reduce travel and minimise stress for families. Ironically, what pulled Natalie to move from a potential career in math and engineering to women’s health is what she’ll be positively impacting. “I discovered women’s health and a huge need for more providers to be focused on the unique challenges that occur in women.” Now, she spends her days running in and out of zoom calls and in-person appointments, ultrasounds, egg retrievals, embryo transfers and surgeries.

“I find it challenging but very rewarding. I’m constantly inspired by our patients and how strong they’re willing to fight for success.” She notes “there is nothing more exciting than getting that positive pregnancy test and to that first ultrasound. It takes a team of people to get to that point.” However, “not every story is going to be immediately successful,” Natalie adds, and that’s where the care and comfort for their patients during the tough times is important. After spending 14 years in Austin, Texas, with Texas Fertility Centre, Natalie moved to New Zealand with her family earlier this year and settled in Dunedin. She joined the Fertility Associates team, primarily based in Dunedin with regular visits to Christchurch.

With her comes experience, knowledge, a new approach to their practices and above all, another set of hands. This will “accelerate the time to get people from testing to treatment and having a successful pregnancy.” Natalie mentions that she’s been lucky to move from one strong fertility team to another, and hopes to see collaboration between different processes to achieve “the best of both worlds for our patients.”

You can book to see Natalie at Fertility Associates Christchurch and Dunedin: 0800 10 28 28.

Targeting

acne-prone skin Acne is a common skin condition, occurring when hair follicles under the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, causing whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples.

A

cne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages, including menopausal women. Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin, so the earlier treatment starts, the lower your risk of such problems. Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. In older adults, a sudden onset of severe acne may signal an underlying disease requiring medical attention, so see your doctor. For many women, acne can persist for decades, with flare-ups common a week before menstruation, during perimenopause, and menopause. This type of acne usually clears up without treatment for women who use contraceptives. Treatments are many and varied. Some nonprescription acne lotions, cleansers and other skin products can cause a serious reaction, so use cautiously.

TOP TIP

Scientific Kiwi skincare specialist Emma Lewisham recently launched a world-first patented serum, targeting acne-prone skin. The Supernatural Blemish Serum, with Q24 Live Skin Probiotic Micrococcus luteus Q24, is the world’s first probiotic strain discovered on actual living, healthy human facial skin, says Emma. Professor John Tagg discovered Q24 in 2004, and it has been cultured from healthy human skin for more than 20 years, to research its health potential. “This strain has an unparalleled capacity to impede the growth of key skin pathogens that damage human skin,” says Professor Tagg. “By incorporating Q24 into a skincare product, we can unlock a new and exciting level of benefits for the skin.”

hearing Christchurch has a packed calendar throughout summer, with Cup and Show Week, plus plenty of outdoor events.

W

hile we wear sunscreen and hats to protect our skin from sun damage, our ears have no protection from noise damage. Exposure to hazardous noise is a common cause of hearing loss in adults. The cumulative effects of noisy environments over our lifetime takes a toll on the delicate structures of the inner ear. Audiologist at Bellbird Hearing, Caroline Smales says when it comes to hearing, it is vital to put safety first. This 100% Kiwi-owned hearing clinic offers a full wraparound service, from hearing tests through to wax removal and hearing aid fittings. Being a registered Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provider also enables the clinic to help clients initiate claims directly to ACC for occupational noise-induced hearing loss hearing aid funding. Hearing loss from working in a noisy environment may be covered by ACC, as may be the costs associated with hearing assessments and hearing aid fittings. ACC funding can be used at Bellbird Hearing for appointments, consumables, adjustments, hearing aids, or repairs to hearing aids, irrespective of where the hearing aids were originally purchased. Ear wax build-up is a globally recognised common cause of hearing loss. When wax builds up in the auditory canal, people may notice a gradual loss of hearing. Senior Ear Nurse, Anna Cleary, specialises in ear wax removal. Utilising a microscope and ACC approved micro-suction, ear wax, foreign bodies and any other debris are gently removed from the ears. Tinnitus is another common ear condition that can be distressing for those experiencing it. Symptoms are a recurring ringing or buzzing in one or both ears, caused from damage in the inner ear.

While there is no cure for tinnitus, hearing aids can be an effective treatment, enabling patients to cope more easily with the condition. Bellbird Hearing celebrated its third birthday in September, and with another clinic now operating in Timaru, the business has grown and become a trusted name throughout Canterbury. Book an appointment to talk through any hearing problems you are experiencing and let the team help return you to the world of good hearing.

roast salmon prawn, orange, & fennel C

aterer, cook, and entertainer Tina Duncan shares a recipe from her recently released book Plated. A whole side of salmon is definitely a festive dish and this has its place at all sorts of celebrations because it can be served warm or cold, whichever way works for you. Kecap manis is a sweeter, Indonesian-style soy sauce found in most good supermarkets.

INGREDIENTS

DRESSING 1 orange, zest and juice

SALAD 2 oranges

1 Tsp Dijon mustard

2 fennel bulbs

30ml rice wine vinegar

1/ cup frozen peas, thawed 2

40ml canola or rice bran oil

4 radishes, sliced 2 Tbsp roughly chopped flat-leaf parsley microgreens and baby rocket, to serve

SALMON 3 Tbsp kecap manis

PRAWNS 2 Tbsp canola oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed 500gm raw prawn cutlets 1/ cup fish stock 4 1/ cup white wine 4

Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 whole side of Akaroa salmon, skinned and pin boned

Plated

A lifetime love affair with food Tina Duncan, with a foreword by Maggie Beer Published by Camberdown Press.

METHOD – SERVES 8, PREP TIME: 20 MINS, COOK TIME: 15 MINS

1

Combine kecap manis and lemon juice and brush over the salmon. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

2

Preheat oven to 220 deg C. Place salmon on a roasting tray and roast for 10 minutes until just cooked. Time may vary depending on the thickness of the salmon. Remove from the oven, place on a large serving platter. Cover with a piece of baking paper, followed by a sheet of tin foil and a tea towel to keep warm.

3

Peel the oranges and slice horizontally. Slice fennel finely and plunge into ice-cold water to refresh. Drain and reserve. Prep remaining ingredients and set aside until service.

4

Combine all the dressing ingredients in a screw-top jar and shake vigorously to combine.

5

While the salmon is roasting, heat oil in a sauté pan and cook garlic for 30 seconds, add the prawns and toss until beginning to change colour. Add the stock and wine, season and simmer for 2 minutes until prawns

are cooked through. Strain off the liquid and discard. In a bowl, combine the prawns with all the salad ingredients.

6

To serve, toss dressing through salad. Pile on top of salmon and garnish with microgreens and baby rocket.

TIPS

• The dressing and salad can be prepped in advance. • This recipe can also be served cold. Prep earlier in the day and add dressing just before serving.

Summer salad days Fresh, colourful, and full of goodness, salads are a quick way to dress up brunches, lunches, and dinners.

F

rom full-on greens to rainbow coloured offerings, salads include a few basic ingredients, then the rest is up to the creator’s imagination. Lettuce is a popular starting point, yet spinach, rocket, watercress, and basil are other options. And let’s not forget pasta salads. Even lettuce comes with oh so many choices. Think classic iceberg for lots of crunch, cos for Caesar, and romaine for Mediterannean-style, paired with feta, black olives, and cherry tomatoes. Fresh quality produce is one key to creating tempting salads, and luckily most ingredients are plentiful during the summer growing season. Keep a few other essentials in the pantry, such as nuts (peanuts, pine nuts, cashews, walnuts), sunflower seeds, and croutons.

Try adding some of these to your favourite lettuce: Asian style – fresh coriander, grated carrot, mung bean sprouts, snow pea shoots. Greek style – sliced red onion, diced cucumber, black olives. Italian style – sliced red peppers, parmesan cheese, bocconcini, herbed croutons. Kiwi style – sliced tomatoes, sliced hard boiled eggs, chives.

Fruit is a welcome ingredient in many salads, and we’re not just talking desserts.

F

resh, frozen, or even tinned, many fruits add extra dimensions to time-honoured savoury vegetable salads. A classic example is a Waldorf salad with apples, celery, grapes, and walnuts. Variations include using dried fruits, such as raisins and dates. Fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are welcome additives to colour up salads, and so too is watermelon. They all complement several varieties of greens, including rocket, watercress, basil, mint, and lettuce. Try some of these:

Strawberries with spinach and pecans. Try caramelised pecans for a change. Also good with avocado, and finely sliced red onion. Orange or mandarin segments with pan-seared duck and watercress. Watermelon with feta, mint, and cucumber, or with feta, basil, and strawberries, and a balsamic dressing.

Peaches (pan-fried) with Parma ham, mozzarella cheese, and rocket. Swap ham for chicken, or try seared tuna chunks.

Blueberries with baby spinach, crumbled blue cheese, and toasted pecans. Try a raspberry vinaigrette.

Grapes work well with walnuts, pecans, and pine nuts, and also with most types of lettuce, rocket, and soft crumbly cheeses.

DRESS IT UP Just as accessories make an outfit, dressings are the finishing touches to salads.

S

upermarket shelves are full of options, yet with a few basic ingredients and five to 10 minutes in your kitchen, it’s easy to create your own. Vinegar and olive oil-based vinaigrettes are light, healthy, and great on greens, vegetables, and fruits. They also refrigerate well. Either place all ingredients in a jar with a lid and shake well until mixed, or whisk together in a bowl. Sweeten and season to taste. Here are some ideas for you to try:

Basic vinaigrette

Use one tablespoon of vinegar for every three tablespoons of oil. Add condiments, and seasonings to taste.

66 November 9, 2023 Metropol

Think garlic, Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard, lemon zest, and herbs, depending on what type of salad you are dressing.

Raspberry Vinaigrette

Add half a cup of fresh raspberry purée in to 3/4 cup vinaigrette. Sweeten with honey. Frozen raspberries can also be used, so put some aside when they are plentiful. If you don’t like raspberries, try strawberries, or blueberries instead.

Avocado vinaigrette

Combine one ripe avocado with 1/4 cup white wine vinegar, juice of one lemon, and salt and pepper to taste, and blend well in a food processer. Slowly add 3/4 cup of olive oil until combined well and creamy.

TOP TIPS

• Use extra virgin olive oil • Experiment with different vinegars i.e. red wine, white wine, and balsamic vinegars. • To add sweetness try honey, maple syrup, and agave syrup.

square

In a world of circles and discs, Metropol’s Gadget Guru Ian Knott explores a robot vacuum that dares to break the mold.

A

nyone who owns a robot vacuum cleaner will attest to one main design fault in the usual circularshaped machines – round things don’t fit into corners very well. This obviously leaves a triangle of dust, dirt, and grime in every corner of the house that needs to be cleaned by some other means. But what if the vacuum was more or less square? Dusty corners would be a thing of the past. The world-wide leaders in robot vacuums, ECOVACS have released the Deebot X2 OMNI, a mopping and vacuuming machine that shuns the norm with its relatively square shape. The straight edges allow the X2 to run parallel to walls and get the solitary rotating brush to get right into corners. But having just one brush means that the X2 has to align itself in the right direction so that the brush is on the wall side. This means that vacuuming can take longer than most other machines. Time isn’t really

an issue though when you don’t have to do any of the work. The shape isn’t the only innovation the X2 brings to the table (or floor), with over 100 new patents. Like its predecessor the X1 OMNI, the X2 knows when the dust container is full and will return to the base station to empty itself, before carrying on cleaning where it left off. When it comes to suction power, the X2 raises the bar considerably, with 60% more suction (800Pa) than the X1: which itself was impressive enough. This allows it to reach deep into the pile of the carpet and remove more dust than ever before. For those with hardfloors, or a mixture of hard and carpet, the X2 is the perfect solution with its ability to wet mop and vacuum without having to worry about adding or removing mopping pads. It senses the surface it’s on and either vacuums and mops the hardfloor or lifts the mopping pads 15mm and vacuums the carpet without getting it wet. When the cleaning cycle is finished, the X2 returns to the base station where it washes the mopping pads (using the separate internal clean and dirty water tanks), and hot air dries them,

ready for next time. Utilising AI in its vastly improved obstacle avoidance, the X2 sees everything in its path, learns from it and adjusts its cleaning path to suit. As with any robot vaccum though, shoelaces and phone chargers are its Kryptonite; too low to avoid, yet light and flexible enough to get sucked up and tangled around the main brush. It’s one of those ‘the price we pay for convenience’ things we have to accept.

Invest in the best

This just in: a new era of spa pool indulgence. They’re state of the art, never-seen-before, and exclusive to HotSpring Spas.

L

abelled the “epitome of spa indulgence,” the new highlife collection carries exclusive features that combine over 40 years of innovation and technology to exceed all expectations. Business Development Manager Nick Davies called the high-end collection a “game-changer” in the spa market. The range becomes New Zealand’s most energy-efficient, each spa accompanied by vast upgrades including a wireless remote control panel, Full-Foam insulation, 100% no-bypass filtration, and circulation and jet massage systems like never before. Ultimate relaxation isn’t one size fits all, so the collection boasts nine models and six cabinet finishes to suit your style. All of those options and advancements can feel overwhelming, and a spa is a huge investment. It’s also an investment in our

health, body and mind, to meet our best well-being and discover the benefits of soothed tension, released stiffness, better sleep and reduced anxiety. The irony is that people want spa pools to relax and soak the stress away, but stress can arise from choosing the best model. HotSpring Spas offers private test soaks at their Ferry Road and Carmen Road sites, a specialised experience to better understand your spa before you buy. Walk in, or book online with after-hours options available for total privacy. Cosy changing rooms and towels feel just like home, and their consultants can advise any questions to find your best spa pool fit. If you’re looking for an introduction to the spa scene, or the best spa pool option for your family, HotSpring Spas nationwide ‘Freeflow Fridays’ deal offers a range of quality spa pools at market leading prices.

Despite the name, this deal is up for grabs every day of the week. The company is all about family. Nick adds that with every purchase, they welcome that customer to the family. After years of relaxation in a customer’s original spa, many will return and trade in their old for new. It’s the same values and the same people that will support everyone no matter how long it’s been. Plus, there’s no shortage of parts. A customer owning a 1999 spa pool can walk in and take a new jet right off the shelf, Nick says. With personable and accommodating service, it’s no surprise HotSpring Spas have held on to their number 1 title for over 45 years. Book your private test soak now, or browse the range online.

Do Christmas right Christmas is a time of joy, and also of excess. Make your Christmas celebrations more eco-friendly with these suggestions. 1

Quality not quantity

2

Sustainable trees

3

Mindful gift giving

Instead of buying boxes and boxes of plastic decorations, opt for top quality classic ones that you will able to use year after year. If you choose a Christmas tree, consider buying a potted one that can be planted after the holidays. Artificial trees should be durable and able to be used for many years. Give thoughtful, high-quality personalised gifts that people will truly love. Consider experiences or handmade items.

4 Support sustainable brands

When shopping for gifts, look for products from companies committed to eco-friendly practices.

5

Wrap it right

Collect paper throughout the year, from brown paper supermarket bags to colourful magazine pages, to use for wrapping Christmas presents.

6 Reduce food waste

Plan your meals carefully to minimalise food waste. Use local and seasonal ingredients to support sustainable agriculture.

TO FOSTER OR

adopt

Have you been watching too many cute cat videos or The Dog House recently? Does now feel like the right time to bring a furry friend into your life?

A

fter weighing up the costs and responsibilities, it might be worth considering fostering or adopting a pet.

Foster

Foster homes are often sought for animals that need additional care, treatment, or socialisation before being put up for adoption. Fostering allows you to care for an animal temporarily, giving you the opportunity to assess your ability to be a responsible pet owner, while helping animal organisations from being overloaded.

Adopt

Adopting an animal often comes with a fee to cover the medical costs, but it’s usually at a much lower price than buying from a breeder. Older animals spend longer time in shelters due to bias towards puppies and kittens. Seriously consider whether you can take on an adult animal. One benefit is skipping the hyper puppy or naughty kitten years.

They answer frequently asked questions about fertiliser types and timing, and offer their tailored range of quality products, including seed, all at warehouse prices. “The Summer Lawncare pack is the perfect and straightforward way to

get everything you need to support your lawn this summer,” says Roger. Having completed the remediation of Lancaster Park a couple of years ago, the team suggests a visit to the venue to see the freshly restored iconic heritage gates. “The gates are the only evidence left of the parks amazing history. They will be reopened ready for Armistice Day on 11 November. Council has also installed an informative park history narrative at the Heritage Gates, and are now installing native planting and landscaping,” says Roger.

worm farm Globally, food waste contributes to methane-gas emissions, and in New Zealand more than 100,000 tonnes of food are wasted each year.

N

ow food scraps at the University of Canterbury (UC) are being converted into nutrient-rich compost thanks to a new project by enthusiastic UC staff and students. The team of dedicated composters, from Te Ngaki o Waiutuutu | UC Community Gardens, UC Sustainability Office and UC Compost Club, established a worm farm in May as part of Compost Awareness Week. The new worm farm helps to educate people about using food scraps wisely, with the wooden box farm located in a high foot-traffic area outside the Undercroft food court. UC Compost Club founders Jess and Kaitlyn Lamb say with just a small amount of effort some of this food waste can be converted to compost gold. Their compost is helping grow vegetables in their community garden. The worm farm houses some 1000 hungry worms, whose numbers are expected to increase with the warmer weather. “Along with the bacteria and micro-organisms, the worms break down the food into worm castings, which is a nutrient-rich compost that can be used on your garden,” UC Community Gardens coordinator Jam Kelly says.

Did you know? Worms are fussy eaters, disliking acidic, fatty and spicy foods as well as bread, dairy, meat, oils, and seafood.

Mid-2025 opening forecast M

ore delays and a legal dispute between the delivery agency and contractor were announced in late October, arising from a cost escalation dispute between the contractor, CPB, and the Crown’s delivery agency, Rau Paenga (formerly Ōtākaro Ltd). CPB lodged a claim in September 2022 for an additional $212m to complete Parakiore, and increased it to $439.4m at the start of September 2023. The major anchor project is more than 70% complete. On-site work started on the project in 2018, and Cantabrians were initially told it would be completed by 2021.

Further delays may mean Christchurch residents and groups can’t use the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre until mid-2025.

The contractor’s claims would mean the project contract’s value could increase to $696m, which is more than the $683m lump sum contract to deliver Te Kaha, Canterbury’s Multi-Use Arena. The council’s contribution to the Parakiore project is capped at $146.9m. Rau Paenga has rejected CPB’s claims on both entitlement and amount, and a High Court decision has seen the organisation successfully prevent CPB from suspending on-site construction works, based on the latter’s unsubstantiated claims. Once completed, Parakiore will be the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure facility of its type in New Zealand.

LEEANN WATSON CANTERBURY EMPLOYERS’ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | CHIEF EXECUTIVE

A fantastic time

Looking to the future

It is almost Cup and Show Week when we show off our beautiful city to the rest of the country, and doesn’t it look terrific in the spring?

This election was fought amidst significant uncertainty facing businesses. Now more than ever, they need a government formed, and fit-for-purpose policy settings that create certainty, reduce the cost of doing business, allow better access to a migrant workforce, and reduce compliance costs and red tape.

T

his is the week when country comes to town, and we celebrate our rural neighbours who have made Canterbury strong. I’m really looking forward to being among the thousands of Cantabrians flocking to Addington Raceway and Riccarton Park Racecourse next week to mix and mingle, spend time with friends and family, see the amazing fashion in the field, cheer on the horses, and celebrate our wonderful city. Did you know this will be the 160th anniversary of our iconic A & P Show? It’s amazing to think that with just three exceptions in 1919, 2020, and 2021, it’s been held every single year since 1862, when it was first held in a paddock north of Latimer Square. It’s always been a part of my life, and when the kids were little it was a tradition for us to pack them in the car on Show Day, ‘People’s Day’ and head out to Addington. From wood chopping competitions to farm animals, the rides, dog trials, and show jumping, it’s a great day out for everyone. Chrissy and I’ll be there this year with bells on, and we’ll be hoping for some of that warm norwest weather we’re famous for. I wish everyone a fantastic week. Don’t forget either that The Corrs are playing this Saturday 11 November at Hagley Park, and be sure to snap up the last of the tickets for the FAST5 Netball Tournament which is also happening this weekend – it’s all go here in Christchurch!

C

anterbury businesses are bold, with big aspirations for their future and the future of the city, region, and country they choose to do business in. Like the rest of the country, our region too is facing challenges of productivity and growth, particularly now, as we also navigate an economy still recovering from the effects of Covid-19 and the global economic slowdown associated with it. Uncertainty has grown during recent months, and businesses have been delaying investment decisions, with very real flowon effects, as we have seen a slowdown in forward orders and demand, further reinforcing that uncertainty. The Government has a substantial role to play in rebuilding momentum and certainty across the economy. Developed through engagement with its members, the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce has provided a ‘Briefing for the Incoming Government’ which highlights a number of policies businesses would like to see prioritised. These include a focus on getting inflation back to sustainable levels, regulatory certainty and reduced compliance costs so that small and medium-sized businesses can focus on productivity and growth, and increased support for small businesses. They also need fit-for-purpose immigration settings that are open, simple and predictable, investment in education, and in infrastructure, as well as action on crime and antisocial behaviour. We look forward to welcoming the new Prime Minister and his ministerial colleagues to Canterbury in the coming months to discuss these policies.

Baby’s first vaccine

Making a difference

Local researchers, together with clinicians, are relentlessly pursuing improvements in treatments to deliver better outcomes across our communities.

Ōtautahi Christchurch has natural advantages setting us apart from many other parts of the world. We need to keep it that way for generations to come.

R

egretfully, sometimes delivering the benefits of proven research is frustrated by poor subsequent application. Recently I had the privilege of attending Professor Tony Walls’ inaugural professorial lecture at the University of Otago here in Christchurch. As part of his presentation, Tony presented a compelling case for delivering ‘baby’s first vaccine’ for whooping cough, by vaccinating mothers during pregnancy. Babies are most vulnerable to whooping cough immediately after birth. If the illness presents, it can be difficult to treat, devastating for the baby, and at worst fatal. Whooping cough rates in New Zealand are increasing. Research by Tony and his colleagues, backed up by international evidence, has shown that immunising mothers before baby is born is safe, and can protect about 90% of babies in their first few weeks of life. It gives them protection before they can be immunised after birth. Currently only about 45% of pregnant women across New Zealand are immunised for whooping cough. For Māori the rate is much lower at around 25%. A targeted, cost effective, education programme, encouraging this practice could save babies’ lives. This is one excellent example of how we can increase equitable health outcomes through applying quality research. It would reduce downstream costs to the health system, as well as make a life-changing difference to many babies, mums and whānau. We need to ask why this is not happening.

T

e Pae Christchurch continually looks for opportunities to enhance products and operations, with a strong focus on the environment. Sustainability goes well beyond just measuring waste and offsetting carbon emissions. It’s about legacy, what we leave behind for future generations. We have a world-class building with a five-star green design which helps to reduce energy consumption. We also apply sustainable policies across the business, such as environmentally-friendly packaging, dehydration of food waste into soil-food for community gardens, and transforming water via our e-water system into a chemicalfree cleaning solution. Our people, however, make the real difference, and our team is passionate about continuous improvements in sustainability. So much so, we recently retained Gold status with Toitū Envirocare for the third year running. Te Pae Christchurch is also placing our city firmly in the international spotlight for its work in the sustainability landscape. We were recently announced winner of the 2023 Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award in the Community and Government Projects category. These prestigious awards, with entries from 18 countries worldwide, were evaluated by an independent judging panel of sustainability experts. We are proud of our awards and our city, so much so we make every effort to put Ōtautahi Christchurch in the limelight while ensuring our beautiful region is able to be enjoyed by generations to come.

From the to the

AmazonUrban Jungle

It’s November, a month that usually brings significant activity to both the real estate market that I know and love, and to most of us personally as we endeavour to prepare for Christmas.

the world’s most elaborate and important ecosystems. I’d learnt prior to going that there are actually nearly 2,000 different species of birds and mammals, 40,000 plant species, millions of insects (which I wasn’t overly keen to see!) and some of the world’s most magnificent trees.

I always enter this particular month with a sense of exhilaration and expectation.

This knowledge preset my expectations; the reality, however, is certainly different. The part of the river that we were able to travel to, as far as Manaus, has been deeply affected by changes both environmental and introduced. An unprecedented drought, numerous wildfires, large areas of deforestation, a state of emergency – and all of this means the animals have well and truly retreated into areas that will require a deeper investigation by me in the future.

We’re a business that pivots off whatever momentum is occurring, and this spring market is certainly moving. Sales volumes are larger, ours currently the most significant in the country for our brand if you look at regional and national awards, but I’m also reflecting on two recent events that have occurred within a few days of writing this and I’d like to share these. One of these was a trip which opened my eyes further to the shifts happening in the world from a climate-change perspective. The other, a burglary. Bear with me whilst I lay out my thoughts. I’ve just returned from a trip to the Amazon region, having undertaken what’s known as an expedition cruise. It’s certainly an adventure and one for which I had a number of expectations. The largest being the opportunity to see some of the numerous bird and wildlife species which automatically come to mind when you think of this incredible region and its position as one of

The numerous birds and few species we did see, however, especially the very special pink dolphin, were greeted with awe which lifted spirits and hearts. I know I’m sounding more like a travel agent than a real estate professional, but at heart I think everyone has a bit of the adventurer in them and at a professional level it reminds me of what’s precarious and special about our own country and way of life. With a growing drive towards more sustainable choices to protect our beautiful natural environment – such a drawcard for immigrants – trips like this always heighten my awareness and appreciation of New Zealand.

Now the burglary, which involved one of the properties that we had staged through our staging company being broken into despite electric gates and a security system. What was taken included all bedding (leaving only the mattresses) and everything that comprises a staged bedroom. For those of you who don’t know, that means six pillows, two covers, three cushions, a rug at the end of the bed, matching bedside tables and lamps! And then let’s mention chairs, all kitchen items, special decor rugs … the list continues. I’d imagine for the scoundrels that committed the crime, whilst also leaving a half-opened can of Coke, it was a busy night. To everyone who has a vacant property that’s presented for sale, be vigilant, neighbours listen out and, for me, I’ve realized how gut-wrenching and invasive crimes (petty or not) affect you. So, November has started with a roar. I’d imagine that’s likely to continue as we move forward into December. For me this means do my best, keep my adventurous heart alive and be aware of the weight of expectations and the requirement for keeping things safe. Take care out there.

Art comes with emotional power, a connection between reality and fantasy. Art can possess deep meaning and power and one recent sculpture in Ōtautahi’s art scene has proved just that.

F

or weeks, nestled in the middle of the city at the Bridge of Remembrance, sat the collaboration between Art Fetiche, local master carver Fayne Robinson, and the Māia Health Foundation, supported by Westpac. Cantabrians were in awe of the enormous two-koru sculpture, resembling a heart, and it received plenty of acclaim becoming a famous ‘selfie’ background. Named Kauawhi, meaning embrace, the 2.1m high x 2.3m wide sculpture highlights the beauty of local teamwork. With Art Fetiche’s focus on custom, personal project, and Fayne’s incredible detail with design and carving, these artisans put their hearts, quite literally, at the front of what they do. Fayne and the Art Fetiche team spent over 400 hours on the artwork, now situated in the foyer of Westpac Christchurch Central. Made of Tōtara, one of the most durable and versatile timbers in the world, the

sculpture alludes to symbols of strength and growth. However, there’s much more meaning to it than what it’s made from. The Māia Health Foundation, committed to improving community healthcare and services, and Te Whatu Ora have come together to create a space for young mental health patients, this new facility to be the eventual home of Fayne’s sculpture. Kauawhi lights up at night, reflecting the light it hopes to provide for young children struggling with their mental health. To bring your own artwork ideas to life, contact the team at Art Fetiche.

he award for Joint Supreme Winner and National Award for Commercial Architecture went to designer Darryl Church, of DCA Architects of Transformation, for the Heretaunga Intermediate School in Hastings. Also a joint supreme winner, plus recipient of the National Award for Multi-Unit Housing, was designer Madushin Amarasekera, of Construkt Architects, for the Te Uru walk-up Terraces in Hobsonville, Auckland. Judges say the school project successfully balances critical community needs and functions, while also producing a beacon project that stands for the fun of coming together to learn. “The exercise of balance is reflected in the exterior and interior colour symbolism, embodying the busyness and tranquillity of its prominent site. There is also balance in the elegance and robustness of both form and materiality. The simple extruded box volume successfully uses colour in both exterior and interior placement to highlight separate activity areas. The result is to create a distinctive and inviting playful building that entices students to discover the joys of learning within,” judges noted. Te Uru Terraces is a worthy winner, showing the rest of Tāmaki Makaurau how to manage density done well, the judges found. Eight separate buildings provide a number of townhouses, with a common language of forms being individualised by colour, materials and textures into homes for all. The design is a mix of three storey apartments and walkups, to meet a range of different buyers needs and offer architectural variety. “The cultural history of the site is written into the façade in places, with careful weaving of patterns into the brickwork referencing the welcoming action that the buildings do, as both a karanga and a hongi to the incoming visitors,” say the judges. “This project does the hard mahi and is deserving of the highest praise.”

Easy living Are you looking for a new home, a bach, a self-contained granny flat? Do you like what you see here?

I

f the answer is yes to any of these, then check out the options at Christchurch-based Durasteel Structures. Some of the options feature on this page, although the company also builds custom homes (and sheds). What sets it apart from others is the technology and materials used, and the quickness of the builds. At the heart of the build process is strong yet lightweight steel, used for the floor subframe, and each home’s portal frame and panels. The result is a lightweight yet extremely strong home with all-round durability, that exceeds council requirements, and is easily relocated. The nature of the materials used also means a fast six to eight weeks build time. Durasteel director Brent Collins says the company has extensive experience, providing more than 700 buildings, including new homes, to customers in Canterbury. “They are panel homes with superior thermal properties, homes that flex during seismic activity, and have larger than normal, floor to ceiling windows, allowing for good natural light throughout. “We use local sourced materials, where practicable, and almost all products used within our structures are backed by large local manufactures, who stand behind their product, in case of any unforeseen warranty issues” he adds. Options include: 1 or 2 bedroom pods from 23 square metres 1 or 2 bedroom homes from 90 square metres 3 or 4 bedroom homes from 151 square metres.

Did you know? Durasteel specialises in new builds. Not builders in the traditional sense, its houses are steel framed and manufactured in New Zealand, using materials made right here in Christchurch, before being shipped to your block or site for final assembly and construction. Assembly and construction processes are completed by its own builders working directly with clients. The new homes come with a 50-year warranty on the steel mainframe, roof panels, and wall panels. “We have off-the-shelf designs that make ideal new build homes in the Canterbury area, whether you are looking for a large house or something smaller,” says Brent. “We can build from a range of designs, some of which feature here.” For more information, call 0800 346 586, visit the website, or the Durasteel office at 698 Main South Road, Islington, Christchurch.

Uninterrupted upgrades It can be a Catch-22. You have great tenants in place, and you would love to give your commercial property an upgrade for them and for you. But an upgrade will mean displacing your tenants and a break in rental income.

U

nravelling this knotty problem is a speciality for the team at Priority Projects. They have an established reputation as the go-to group for extensive enhancement, repair, and refurbishment of property while allowing established businesses of all types to continue trading at full steam. A recent project in Hornby saw the property upgraded with commercial structural strengthening, upgrading of the office blocks, new cladding, and a new roof. “We did this all with the existing tenants staying in place,” says project manager Donna Gillatt. “Our clients are the owners of the building and we have worked with them on a number of projects. They are wonderful to work with and they know they can trust us to get the job done.”

AESTHETIC

SOLAR PANELS

While installing solar energy brings a raft of benefits, enhancing the look of your home isn’t always one of them.

P

lenty of solar companies install a variety of panels, but Infinite Energy NZ has placed the emphasis on accurate design, as well as top performance. “Our emphasis is to make your home more desirable by eliminating the aesthetic barrier of solar panels,” says chief executive Regan Heal, “we think it is crazy to spend upwards of $1 million on a home and then $20,000 to ruin the look of it!” Solar panels naturally sit on the north surface of a home and this is also the side that is best for outdoor living and entertaining. “Our pure black panels are designed and installed to discretely blend in,” says Regan, “we are solutions based, ensuring you get great outcomes through excellent design.” Most of us are bringing solar energy into our lives for the first time. Once we have solar, we should ensure it’s performing at its peak. “Getting the best out of your solar is a learning process. Along with our great design and installation process, we also create a long-term relationship with our clients, we stand behind them to ensure their panels are performing to our expectations,” says Regan.
