Auspicious occasion

Throughout life, and in business, certain achievements and milestones need to be celebrated. Turning 25 is one of those, and this month Metropol did just that. Succeeding as a small business is tough at any age. Statistics show that more than 50% of New Zealand business startups fail within five years, 75% will have failed within 10 years, and only one fifth (20%) will last beyond 15 years.

For Metropol to be successful in business for 25 years, and establish itself as the undisputed No1 lifestyle magazine in Canterbury is an achievement of note; something quite special. Most Canterbury people know the magazine, and readers actively seek it each fortnight. They know they will always receive stories, articles, and advertising that will interest, entertain or inform them; good news stories to take time out to read, be inspired to visit an event or a place to go, and motivated to buy the things they need or desire. Over the years, the magazine’s design, and look, have evolved, and will continue to do so, although its fundamental essence, unchanged since the beginning, will remain. Metropol has featured numerous prosperous businesses that are still operating, and still advertising in it. Every two weeks, 40,000 audited copies are printed and distributed free, allowing advertisers to reach targeted readers who are their potential customers. It’s a winning formula for a multi-award-winning magazine, made possible by its advertisers, readers, printers, distributors, and the staff who make up Team Metropol. Collaborative teamwork is essential for success, so a huge thank you to all of those who have and continue to support us here at Metropol.

O

nce upon a time, Trevor Laplanche’s days were filled with selling, printing, and business. Now family and friends, travel, golf, boating, cars, art, and photography, have taken their place. He’s just finished moving house. Life in retirement is great, he says, before admitting his entrepreneurial side still comes to the fore from time to time, investing in New Zealand and local projects. Trevor’s time of having to meet print deadlines may be long gone, yet they’re not forgotten; the memory rekindled each time he sees a new issue of the iconic Canterbury lifestyle magazine he created. He enjoys relaxing with a good magazine, or book, and catching up with the daily news, although he believes that newspapers are in their twilight years, just like photo developing studios were. “While niche magazines are gaining in popularity, many daily newspapers are facing problems with declining readership.” Relevant locally focused magazines are a different story, he says, especially if, like Metropol, they remain current and nicheoriented to their target audience. Print media was never in his sights when as an enthusiastic 17-year-old Trevor left school in Waimate, and started his working life in Oamaru as the Haywrights Department Store display artist and window dresser. “Art was always my thing,” he chuckles. He moved to Christchurch to the same job at Beaths Department Store, and after developing a love of marketing and sales joined AMP Insurance company as a sales representative. A similar job followed at The Christchurch Star, then the role of Classified Sales Manager, and manager at The Shopping Guide. Print media had become his career by then, and at age 32, Trevor founded The Christchurch Mid Week Mail, later renamed The Christchurch Mail. His silent (50%) partner was The Press. “They had the finance, and I had the skill base for local community newspapers,” he recalls. Thirteen years later he diversified again, starting Metropol magazine in October 1998, initially with two friends who he bought out after a year. Two decades later, Trevor sold the magazine to the current owners Murray and Jo Dempsey. They say that behind every successful man is a great woman, and for Trevor it was his late wife Ali. “My wife, partner in everything, and best friend Alison. Everyone called her Ali. A smart, gutsy lady.” Theirs is a classic high school sweethearts story. “Ali was in the same art class as me in school. She always won first prize, and I got second. She often reminded me of this to keep me on track. “Ali worked alongside me and covered my back in every way. We were a formidable team, and none of this would have been possible without Ali. She held the family together plus worked alongside myself, ridiculous hours for a future for our family.”

Sadly Ali passed away from illness at 52 years. A truly family business, when Trevor suffered a ‘heart issue’, their son Julian returned from overseas to help as Metropol’s Production Manager. Two years ago, Trevor remarried, to Colleen, and together they’re planning for the years ahead. “We both enjoy the same things so life is great,” he explains. After selling Metropol, Trevor, with a partner, purchased the highly acclaimed The Little Bistro restaurant in Akaroa. He joined the local yacht club, and art gallery, and bought a house in Akaroa. “While I still spend most of my time in Christchurch, I now have new and old Akaroa friends, so I enjoy time with them, in addition to boating with friends and family, including my grandchildren. Having sold the restaurant to its top-rated chef, Trevor dived into yet another niche business, purchasing La Hotel, and changing its name to The Wharf. Following three years at the helm there, he sold it to, “fully retire from business ownership, and enjoy Akaroa and Christchurch.” He doesn’t plan on starting any new magazines in the future, content to reflect on past successes in that field, although he’ll be keeping watch on the print media. “While I no longer own it [Metropol], I keep a very close eye on it and am proud to see what I created 25 years ago. “It’s still earning its place as the number one local magazine brand. Few can keep that pace I believe, yet Metropol does and is looking better and better. “Advertising and editorial are very relevant and current, and that is essential.”

Trevor, right, receiving one of Metropol’s multiple national awards from a Community Newspapers Association representative.

Sarah Buchanan, current president of Showbiz, is a pillar of the musical theatre scene in Christchurch. Deputy Editor Daniella Judge chats to her about her exciting dual careers and the places her talents have jetted her off to.

S

arah started her journey in musical theatre growing up in Invercargill. From the age of five she was an avid highland dancer, sang in local competitions, and was heavily involved in the local theatre scene, just like her parents. At 18, Sarah started a hairdressing apprenticeship thinking a career in the performing arts was reaching too far. At 21 she packed up and moved to the big city, Christchurch. Working backstage at a Showbiz show as a hairdresser, Sarah ended up auditioning for her first role. In the following years, she was lucky enough to land a lead role playing Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes. In 1994 she was approached by the Court Theatre to audition for Elric Hooper and that kicked off her professional career in theatre. Since then, her multitude of skills have honed Sarah into a versatile theatrical Swiss Army Knife. Exceeding in both musical theatre and hairdressing, she also worked at top salons such as Ian Nicholson’s, Carl Watkins, and Mods Hair. “Having a career in both worked well as I could rehearse for a show during the day and work at the salon at night or vice versa,” she says. In 2012, Sarah retired from the salon floor to start freelancing in theatre wigs and makeup. “I saw a need for an artist as hairdressing became a huge part of the shows, and there were few of us involved with the required skills.” Sarah says a highlight of her career, also in 2012, was being a personal dresser for internationally acclaimed, award-winning musical theatre performer, Elaine Paige. She joined Paige on her Australasian tour, travelling abroad to Australia and China, then on a subsequent tour to Ireland. Earlier this year, she was approached to join New Zealand’s ‘Showcase Entertainment’ Middle Eastern tour, Shrek the Musical, to lead the wig department. Producers of musical theatre in the Middle East asked her back, to join the Phantom of the Opera, running their wig department, and that is what Sarah is working on at the time of this publication. “The people here are lovely and very welcoming,” she says. As President of Showbiz, Sarah has played a pivotal role in reviving theatre in Christchurch after the Covid-19 pandemic’s challenges. “It was a difficult time as we really had to close the show [My Fair Lady], and almost shut down for a year. We tried three times to stage My Fair Lady since, and we were thrilled when we could finally put it on the grand stage this year,” she says. Looking ahead, Sarah is optimistic about the Christchurch theatre scene. “There are many shows up our sleeve we’d love

to do; shows that have been on Broadway and West End,” she says. “Christchurch audiences love live theatre, and I believe we can keep entertaining them and spoiling them along the way.” Sarah highlights that what’s needed for the industry is more support from the Government and local councils. “This is an art form with many trying to build their careers, and we want to hold onto that. The talent in Christchurch is huge,” she emphasises. Beyond her professional achievements, Sarah is a wife and mother to two teens. She is grateful for their encouragement and her parents’ understanding of her commitment to theatre, which allows her to work internationally. “To all theatre graduates, follow your hopes and dreams, and take all opportunities you can.”

Spring days in

Ōtautahi Christchurch It’s true that nowhere does spring quite like Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Orana Wildlife Park For the wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, Orana Wildlife Park has to be top of the spring activity list. Set in 185 hectares and with over 1000 animals, this is Aotearoa’s only open range wildlife park. Meet New Zealand’s only gorillas, hand-feed majestic giraffes, see the cheeky kea, observe kiwi, get up close with rhinos, and meet Kevin, the giraffe calf. With scheduled daily animal presentations to connect you to the animals, the whole family will leave with a newfound appreciation (and love) for all things wildlife, and Orana’s conservation work. www.oranawildlifepark.co.nz

Akaroa Dolphins There’s nothing quite like the magic of cruising across the glistening Akaroa Harbour with a couple of Hector’s dolphins alongside. Akaroa Dolphins is the expert team ready to take you and the whānau out for an unforgettable day on the water. Discover the history of Akaroa as you sail aboard the luxurious boat and encounter the rare Hector’s dolphins that call the harbour home. And it’s not just dolphins you might spy; the team also endeavour to give you the best possible viewing of local New Zealand fur seals, penguins, and seabirds. This friendly and comfortable experience includes

a complimentary local award-winning wine, beer, or juice, as well as delicious home baking. Enough said? www.akaroadolphins.co.nz

International Antarctic Centre It may be heating up outside, but it is still icy cold at the International Antarctic Centre. A unique experience is waiting inside and one that has been a part of Ōtautahi since 1992. Brave an Antarctic storm, go off-road in a Hägglund, befriend a husky, see the penguins, experience Antarctica from all four dimensions and leave with a newfound love and appreciation for the continent, just like the explorers before you. Dust off the winter coat and discover all of the icy magic that awaits. www.iceberg.co.nz

IMPROVING

accessibility

One of the five key goals of the Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush Enhancement Project is to improve accessibility for all people, including people with mobility restrictions and parents with very young children.

P

ūtaringamotu / Riccarton Bush is a bush oasis in the heart of a city – a place where people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds connect with nature, exercise, and socialise. It is a place that is already well-utilised, located close to the Riccarton Bus Exchange and on a major cycleway route through the city, but it needs an upgrade to ensure that as many visitors as possible can move through and experience the bush safely. The bush has 1360m of track within it comprising a mix of concrete, boardwalk, and shingle. Paths, boardwalks, and seating are old and, in many cases, damaged or rotten and in desperate need of upgrades to make them safe and accessible. In many places at present, the paths and boardwalks are too narrow for wheelchair or pushchair users or those with mobility aids to pass safely, and trip hazards are common due to poor clearance of roots and cracked and damaged concrete. Local schools are hugely reliant on

Pūtaringamotu as the space/place for so much of their education outside the classroom and in relation to so many different cultural, environmental, and social learning outcomes. Transport costs are a huge barrier to opportunities for learning outside the classroom, and for schools across Christchurch, Riccarton Bush is by far the most accessible bush experience. Proximity to the Riccarton Bus Exchange adds to this accessibility. We know that for many of our tamariki, for whom transport, parental time, and cost barriers are at play, Pūtaringamotu is their only experience of the New Zealand bush: Riccarton Bush is a treasure which we wholeheartedly want to see preserved for future generations. The present trail and boardwalk infrastructure does not support true accessibility, and the team look forward to the implementation of the upgrade so that wheelchair users, tamariki with visual disabilities and whānau helpers with pushchairs can much more easily embrace the bush experience.

https://riccartonhouse.co.nz/putaringamotu-riccartonbush-major-enhancement-project/ 32 October 26, 2023 Metropol

Certain areas of the boardwalk have started to deteriorate; the concrete paths have become uneven, posing a tripping hazard. Additionally, the signage is outdated, providing visitors with limited information on the cultural importance of this special place.

The Future The Enhancement project aims to achieve the following objectives: Integrate Ngāi Tūāhuriri values, associations, and narratives into the design, art, entrance experience, and interpretation of Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Improve the track system and infrastructure. Develop the Grove area to accommodate larger groups visiting Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton Bush. Provide educational interpretation that encourages engagement and participation.

Donate Now To ensure the future of Riccarton Bush, a total of $2.4 million is needed to fund the Enhancement project. Your donation can help protect, conserve, and enhance this important landmark for future generations.

ARTSCENE Where Art and Canterbury Meet

AN ENCORE FOR KRISTIN CARLIN, NEIL DAWSON, AND MICHEL TUFFERY BY WARREN FEENEY

A

recent group exhibition of 14 of The Central Art Gallery’s artists, appropriately titled Encore, noted that they are worthy of a round of applause. The response to the exhibition in this review has been to encompass something of its personality through three artists, highlighting the diversity of experiences they exemplified in the work of painter, Kristin Carlin, sculptor, Neil Dawson, and multi-media artist, Michel Tuffery. An encounter with Kristin Carlin’s practice is an experience about materials and narratives, one inseparable from the other. The subject, for example of her painting, Flutter, 2022, a cluster of flowers in an indefinite landscape, brought to

3 life by the artist’s marks and gestures, demarcates the intimate and grand detail of its given and unanticipated realities. Sculptor Neil Dawson is nationally and internationally renowned, even those unfamiliar with his name will know his work, possibly Chalice, 2001, that 18-metre-high sculpture in Cathedral Square, celebrating the new millennium. Characteristic of Dawson’s work is the visual promises and deceptions of his sculpture, playing space against form and the ever-changing and unexpected perspectives of each work. “My kaupapa within my art practice is the role of working ‘in between’ as a connector by placing a fresh lens on environmental, community, cultural, and art

historical divide,” states Michel Tuffery, an artist of Samoan, Rarotongan, and Ma’ohi Tahitian heritage. Central to Tuffery’s reach is his engagement with numerous audiences, his practice concerned with Pacific region’s histories and environment, his prints and paintings on tapa and canvas, encompassing subjects that include colonisation, and the depletion of Waiheke Island’s natural resources.

ARTISTIC CREATIVITY IN ANTARCTICA 1 2 2003 and 2006), the cold makes it near impossible to paint. Artists in Antarctica highlights some of the work created by those who have participated in the artists’ and writers’ programmes run by Antarctica New Zealand, including the period from 1997 to 2007, when visits were run in partnership with Creative New Zealand. The stated aim was ‘to increase New Zealanders’ under- standing of Antarctica’s value and its international importance through the work of our top artists’. Through interviews and artworks, this book show- cases the rich, diverse body of work created through arts programmes and gives valuable insights into the creative process and practices of the featured artists. There is no doubt that their work has led to a deeper understanding of life on ‘the ice’.

ore than 100 artists, writers, dancers, creators, educators and journalists have travelled to Scott Base with the Antarctica New Zealand’s Community Engagement Programme since 1957, returning home inspired and empowered to tell the frozen continent’s story. They have since become ambassadors for the continent’s environmental protection and preservation, and their work plays a crucial part in informing and influencing the public’s understanding of Antarctica. Now the work of 37 of these artists features in a gorgeous book, Artists in Antarctica, published by Massey University Press, available in bookshops from 9 November., Edited by Dr Patrick Shepherd, a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury, and twice a visitor to Antarctica, the coffee table offering features of some of New Zealand’s most acclaimed artists, composers and writers who have been to the ice, including Laurence Aberhart, Nigel Brown, Gareth Farr, Dick Frizzell, Anne Noble, Virginia King, Owen Marshall, Grahame Sydney, Ronnie van Hout and Phil Dadson. ARETA WILKINSON AND TORO ATUA: UNLOCKING STORIES OF PLACE

IMAGE: Areta Wilkinson, Toro Atua, 2023, artist impression. Image by Georgina Stokes.

n partnership with the Selwyn District Council and the Rolleston Residents’ Association, SCAPE Public Art has been engaged to bring to fruition a new permanent and major public artwork by Arts Foundation Laureate, Dr Areta Wilkinson’s (Ngāi Tahu) Toro Atua, for the Rolleston Town Centre. Wilkinson described Toro Atua as a contemporary work with ancestral and wellbeing associations, its light-reflecting stainless-steel figures mounted on tall poles, sharing its aesthetic with Te Waipounamu rock art and the ancestry of Ngāi Tahu. So, where did Wilkinson’s ambitions to engage with making public art come from? She recalls that it began working with sculptor Graham Bennett.

“We did the Bridge to Nowhere a concept for the North Frame. That was when I started being braver to venture into public art. After that work, I collaborated on a proposal concept for Parliament grounds, and then 18 months ago I made the proposal to SCAPE for Toro Atua. “Succeeding to Detailed Design Stage, it became Deborah McCormick’s final work with SCAPE. She has since stepped down as Executive Director, but has continued with the project as part of SCAPE’s transition to its new leadership working with Richard Aindow. “Tied up with the whole development of the new town centre, Selwyn District Council has a strong relationship with mana whenua (customary authority exercised by hapu in an identified area).

There is something going on out at Selwyn that is exciting and has vision. Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton’s willingness as a partner with Ngāi Te Ruahikhiki set the model with Te Ara Ātea, its library in Rolleston. It is not a monocultural narrative, you can see it playing out in the building’s fabric and its public spaces, and you can even see it in the planted surrounds.” So, what are Wilkinson’s ambitions for the outcomes for Toro Atua? “Public art can unlock understandings of stories of place. With Toro Atua there are three groups of figures that may move people through the sites to inform them. It is my first public sculpture; it is a big one and it’s meaningful. If we get things in balance then everybody will be uplifted by it.”

INDIGO | MCATAMNEY GALLERY 1 NOVEMBER - 10 DECEMBER What interests one of the artists who will be apart of this exhibition, Jillian, is creatively transforming the particular into the universal. The abstracted nature of the works allows for an ambiguity which enables the viewer to bring their own experiences to the interpretation of the work. Opening event on 2 November, 11am3pm. McAtamney Gallery and Design Store, 40 Talbot St, Geraldine.

BASTARDS AND DEARLY BELOVED 4-26 NOVEMBER See the much-heralded return of North Canterbury’s famous Art duo of Sam Mahon and Ali Erikson. The exhibition is sure to delight and surprise with sculptures and works reflecting this intriguing theme. Maybe viewers will recognise some of the Bastards and Dearly Beloveds in their own lives! November

Topaz and citrine are both November birthstones, and they look so similar that they’re often mistaken for one another.

M Topaz is considered a mellow, empathic stone that soothes, heals, recharges and re-centres. Citrine symbolises happiness, abundance, success, and wealth.

Did you know?

any of us know the pretty blue spectrum of topaz, yet this is a gemstone that comes in a wide variety of colours, including yellow, brown, blue, green, orange, red, pink, purple, and is colourless in its pure form. Other colours are formed when it is tinted by impurities. The name topaz derives from Topazios, the ancient Greek name for St. John’s Island in the Red Sea, where the first yellow gemstones were mined. Today the most valuable topaz is a rich pink or red colour. November’s second birthstone, citrine, is a variety of quartz that ranges from pale yellow to brownish orange in colour, named after the citron fruit because of its lemoninspired shades. Citrine’s yellow hues are caused by traces of iron in quartz crystals, which rarely occurs naturally. Many citrine gems on the market are made by heat treating other varieties of quartz, such as the more common, less expensive purple amethyst and smoky quartz. Most natural citrine is a pale yellow colour. It derives its name from the Latin word “citrina”, and according to legend, it is a “Sun Stone” that absorbs sunlight and harnesses its energy.

Finding a comfortable bra that looks great under your favourite outfits, can be a painful task, especially if you have larger breasts.

bra that fits properly can be truly life-changing. The Fitting Room specialises in bra fittings for D–K cups, making this store a trusted go-to for those struggling with bra discomfort. You can book an in-store fitting, at either of their two Christchurch stores, and the friendly staff will help you find your perfect fit. If you’re not sure whether you fit into the size range, come along anyway – you may end up being a different size than you thought, and The Fitting Room can often find something for everyone – for example, there are non-wired bralettes in all sizes. The sister-in-law combo who purchased the business in 2007, knows from personal experience how difficult it is to find chic bras to support their breasts, especially after one of them had a Mastectomy, so they ensure they stock a stunning range for all who feel left out of mainstream lingerie options. On offer are: high-quality sports bras, beautiful lacy sets, t-shirt bras in the D-K cup size range, and extremely flattering swimwear in all sizes. Pop into the store closest to you and see for yourself the wonderful options at The Fitting Room. Bookings recommended.

Labels to love Ask any woman passionate about fashion what labels she favours and chances are she will name them within seconds.

I

nvariably her labels of choice will be those that tick all the boxes so far as design, cut, and fabric. Made in the Shade introduces three new labels in-store that are certain to capture attention. Dress Addict is Paris-designed and 100% cotton. Not meant for ironing, this is the travelling woman’s joy, taking her from the hotel to the board meeting and then out to dinner. UK label Joe Browns plays with the English rose theme in romantic print dresses, motif-detailed cardigans, and striking military-type jackets in plain denim and embroidered velvet. LS Collections, an Australian label, does classic tailoring with a twist – fun, delightful, and slightly quirky. Other favourite labels, such as Simply Linen, underline why women adore Italian couture. While the perennially popular Bittermoon (with its sensational Carly dress), Anne Mardell, Optimum, and Lisette are never less than superb. Owner Ali is thrilled to announce that Jan Krom has joined the team. Jan looks forward to continuing the exceptional customer service always found at Made in the Shade.

When it comes to exfoliating, using just your hands to cleanse your face doesn’t always cut the mustard. That’s where a cleansing brush comes in handy.

Peter E. Laws MB ChB FRCSI

Silicone comes highly recommended as it holds fewer germs, although cleansing after each use is a good idea. Most cleaning brushes claim to get rid of acne, reduce wrinkles (by stimulating collagen), exfoliate thoroughly, and shrink pores. Big-name brands in this area are Shiseido, FOREO, and RoseSkinCo. You can also find less expensive non-brand name alternatives if you want to try one before investing more. Like most things, do your research first, and see what is best for your skin type.

MOVEMBER for men’s mental health If you’ve grown a mo yourself or watched a partner or sibling get the upper lip fuzz for mental health, it’s likely you’re familiar with Movember.

M

ovember started in 2003, and is currently the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. To be part of Movember you can grow a moustache to show your support for men’s mental health this November, or for those who can’t grow a mo, or who just want to take it a step further, here are some other things the people behind the Movember movement encourage you to do. Move for mental health. Take part by running or walking 60km or more during Movember. Host a mo-ment, an event that raises awareness and funds for men’s health. This could be a pub quiz, ball, dinner party, or anything else you can come up with. If there is something that you think you can do to help men’s mental health, this is as good a time as any to do it. With a few more days until November, now is a great time to start preparing for Movember and get your friends in on this important mental health campaign. Sign up via the Movember website today.

areer break In today’s competitive world, the idea of taking a career break might seem daunting or even counterproductive, yet a wellplanned and purposeful career break can offer numerous benefits, particularly when it comes to mental health.

T

aking time away from the daily grind can be a rejuvenating experience, providing opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and enhanced well-being. Gary Clark of Basecamp, a Ski Academy operating in the travel industry, says a career break can have a positive effect on individuals, both in terms of new experiences and skills they can transfer into their careers, and can also benefit mental health. He adds that a break such as becoming as “gap year ski instructor,” is one possibility. “In demanding daily work environments, we can see the impact on physical and mental wellbeing. It is easy to become overwhelmed by stress, and experience burnout. “Taking a career break allows individuals to step back from their daily routines, deadlines, and pressures, providing a chance to recharge and regain balance in their lives,” says Gary. “Far from just allowing someone to relax and enjoy the odd peaceful slumber, a break from stress can help reduce anxiety levels and promote overall mental wellbeing. Ultimately, this will make for a refreshed, productive return to the office at the end of the sabbatical.” During a career break, individuals will also have more time to engage in self-reflection. “By taking a step back from the daily work routine, they can assess their personal and professional goals, identify areas of growth, and gain clarity on what truly brings them joy and satisfaction. “This self-awareness can lead to more fulfilling career choices and a renewed sense of purpose upon returning to work. The feeling of being ‘stuck in a rut’ can be dealt with, and the break can be an opportunity to reassess and look in detail at where you want to be in 10 years,” says Gary. Other benefits may include personal growth and selfimprovement through acquiring new skills, pursuing education, or engaging in self-development activities, and enhanced creativity gained through pursuing new hobbies, travelling, or engaging in personal projects. You can explore different experiences and perspectives, and as a result return to your career with a fresh outlook, and newfound creativity. An improved work-life balance is essential for mental wellbeing, and Gary says a career break can offer the opportunity to establish healthier routines and habits. “By focusing on leisure, relaxation, and self-care during the break, individuals can develop habits that foster a better work-life balance upon returning to their careers. This can, moving forward, lead to a better headspace and a greater awareness that a break from work at times is not just nice to have, it is essential to boost productivity and wellbeing.”

Heart to heart A pulse wave test can be life-changing for those on the road to cardiac disease.

C

ardiovascular disease and stroke are the number one cause of death in New Zealand, with one in 20 adults diagnosed. Cardiovascular disease is predominantly a ‘lifestyle disease’, and many heart conditions are preventable, or manageable, with early detection and timely intervention. At Cashel Pharmacy, we use a pulse wave analysis (PWA) test to determine your risk factors for heart disease. The information from the PWA will inform CardiAction, an innovative heart screening and intervention management app that empowers you to take control of your heart and artery health. Developed by a team of top-notch cardiologists and technology experts, this cutting-edge app revolutionises how we approach heart care. The app provides personalised recommendations based on your screening results, offering tailored interventions to address potential risks or concerns with lifestyle, nutrition, excercise, and supplement guidence. Book through our website. After your PWA test, which takes about 30 minutes, our friendly screener will explain your results and assess your potential risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as show you how to use CardiAction to improve your heart and artery health—all with personalised recommendations.

says...

Have you fallen into the trap of believing that happiness can only be found in the future?

A

s human beings, we tend to believe that happiness lies just beyond the horizon of our current circumstances. The pursuit of contentment becomes a distant journey, overshadowed by the illusion that we will be happy when we achieve certain milestones or acquire specific possessions. The ‘I’ll Be Happy When...’ trap is perilous because there is always more to accomplish. When you live in this headspace, you tend to keep moving the goal posts so that you never really let yourself have what you already have. And when you’re entirely milestone or goal focused, you usually miss what’s right in front of you – the absolute privilege of every single moment of your precious life. Changing your mindset to always allow for happiness, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your goals. If this serves you, you can still use those goals as lodestones for your decisions. If you want to buy a house for example, it serves you to keep this goal in the forefront of your mind and consider it when deciding what to spend your money on. Yet, it does not serve you to become so wrapped up in achieving this goal – or be so entirely focused on all the things that aren’t the way that you want them to be right now – that there is no room for anything else to bring you joy. It’s a mindset that not only detracts from our contentedness but also can become a source of stress which inevitably begins to take a toll on our health in the long run. Breaking free from the “I’ll be happy when…” trap starts with recognising that you’re in the trap in the first place. Consider whether you have any rules around what you need in order to be happy. You may find it helpful to jot them down. It can also help to shift your attention to all of the things in your life that you have in front of you right now – all of the things you’ve worked hard to accomplish to this point as well as the things that you may be missing.

Then there’s the things you naturally have that bring you joy yet you may not be noticing them:

• Belly laughing on the phone with a girlfriend. • The absolute preciousness of your child’s laugh. • The adoration of your dog. • The pure joy of finding a song or a book or a TV show that you become entirely absorbed by. • The complete majesty of a clear night sky. Let yourself have what you already have – it fosters such joy and an enduring energy.

grapes Pickled

P

lump, juicy green and red imported grapes are available now in plentiful supply, ideal for entertainment platters, and great for pickling. They’re easy to do, and will be done in time for Christmas if you start now. Crisp and spicy, they’re a wonderful accompaniment with cheeses, pâtés, and on charcuterie boards, reminiscent of sweet pickled onions.

INGREDIENTS 1kg large seedless grapes

10 cloves

300ml white vinegar

1.5 Tsp grated nutmeg

2 cups sugar

1 Tbsp orange zest (optional)

8cm cinnamon stick

Clip or screw top jars

METHOD 1

Wash the grapes and remove the stalks.

2

Gently heat the vinegar and sugar in a saucepan, until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil.

3

Add the grapes, and spices, and simmer for five minutes.

4

Put the grapes into sterilised jars, pour liquid over them, and leave overnight.

5

Strain the liquid from the grapes into a saucepan, and bring to the boil. Cool.

6

Remove the cinnamon stick. Pour cool liquid back over grapes, and close jars.

7

Keep for several weeks before using.

METHOD - SERVES 4 - TIME: 40 MINS Variations: For those are gluten intolerant you can simply forgo the puff pastry and have the ham as the outer layer or upgrade the dish by wrapping the asparagus spears and cream cheese with prosciutto or smoked salmon slices.

1

2 3

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C and prepare a baking tray by lining it with baking paper. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the pastry into a sizable square, approximately 30 x 30cm. Then, divide it into four squares, with each side measuring about 15 x 15cm. Spread a quarter of the cream cheese evenly over each square, ensuring you leave a 1cm space around the edges. Wrap 2-4 asparagus spears (depending on thickness) with a slice of ham. Position this bundle on the cream cheese, season to your preference, and gently brush the pastry’s edges with a little beaten egg. Gently fold two edges of the square so that they meet over the asparagus bundle, making sure the top and bottom of the asparagus remain visible. Then, brush the pastry with the beaten egg and transfer it to the prepared baking tray. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is cooked, puffed, has a light golden hue, and the asparagus becomes tender. Serve alongside a crisp seasonal salad.

INGREDIENTS Plain flour, for dusting 350g flaky puff pastry sheets 150g cream cheese 4 thin slices ham 400g asparagus spears, trimmed 1 medium egg Crispy salad, to serve Optional: Finely chopped Jalapeños and crumbed blue cheese.

Come and try the new menu at Chalmers Restaurant, with mains priced between $26 -$38. Family favourites including the Beef Brisket Burger and Korean Fried Chicken. FRESH, AUTHENTIC CHINESE Hand-made, fresh, delicious, and authentic cuisine.

T

hese are all words you would use to describe The China Kitchen, one of the city’s most long-standing traditional Chinese restaurants. Their menu boasts an impressive 102 dishes from Mongolian lamb to lychees red curry king prawns, and Sichuan chicken. Stella Li and her husband have been running the family-owned restaurant since 2001. They pride themselves on having a welcoming and authentic restaurant. As you walk through the doors, you will be greeted by beautiful décor including hand-painted Chinese murals, hanging lotus lights, and a modern open dining room. Health is a big focus in everything they serve up, too. Stella tells us that the most popular item on the menu is their dumplings, which feature pork and chives, chicken and spinach, or a vegetarian option. They make the dumplings daily using their own pastry. “We offer traditional Chinese meals that we make healthy. We do not use MSG, we use canola oil and offer gluten free options,” she adds. “We use fresh ingredients and cook when you order, so your dish is nice and delicious. Head to The China Kitchen website below to book in or peruse the menu, or head to 21a Main North Road, Papanui from 11.30am–9.30pm Tuesday–Saturday, or 11.30am–9pm on Sundays.

It’s Tina Dudley’s fourth year at Christchurch’s Riverside Market, where she sells her personalised decorations and also incorporates The Soup Bar - inciting Kiwis to try her home country’s hot homemade cornbread to dip into delicious soups. The American-born artist made her first decorations in 1996, before moving to Christchurch and selling them locally and nationwide. “I hand-cut different designs from durable, non-fading, coloured-Polymer clay sourced from Kiwi companies. I still have some 30-year-old pieces. 60 October 26, 2023 Metropol

The archaeologists are going to be digging these up! “The Trans Tasman Unity ornaments feature a cute kiwi and koala. They are so light and easy to post. People can now purchase online at A Personalised Place, but children love coming to Riverside Market to choose a decoration to put their name on. “The cruise ship tourists go crazy for them too, and now they can also enjoy some warm, tasty cornbread. Everybody loves the new flavours such as cheesy jalapeños, gluten-free, and vegan. And I’m hoping to have my cornbread mix in the supermarkets next year.”

Templeton’s terrific tavern

Owning and operating a hospitality business for more than 20 years is an achievement in longevity to be exceptionally proud of.

M

urray Hollamby has reached that milestone by having a great relationship with the Templeton locals who come to his Golden Mile Tavern and with the many regular guests who stay in the comfortable motel units. So popular is the motel that guests may stay weekly (usually for work), monthly or annually. Groups often book in each year for local events such as Cup and Show Week or for sports competitions. All 14 units are fully self-contained and range in configuration from double or twin to triple rooms. The convenience of the location is another drawcard. The motels are away from the bustle

of the city, but are still very close to many wedding venues, to the Riccarton and Addington raceways, to sports venues, and to the Christchurch Airport. No hospitality facility earns a good reputation without quality food and drink. The Tavern at the Golden Mile is a great place to socialise, to watch live sport on the huge screen and to enjoy a bite to eat in the restaurant. It’s open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and serves its famous roast meal every Sunday. The Golden Mile also hires out the restaurant as an ideal venue for any party, event or family function.

SEASONAL DELIGHTS, NEW MENU Spring is often a time when we look to refresh and renew – our clothes perhaps and the type of food that we eat.

G

one are the comfort dishes of winter and instead seafood or lighter vegetarian fare may take centre stage. Hospitality outlets also typically update their menus at this time and Fig Restaurant at The Elms Hotel is no exception. “We have recently introduced not only new à la carte and bar menus for summer, and also a refreshed wine list,” says Ravi Naidu, food and beverages services manager at Fig. “We wanted to reflect the exciting local products that are in abundance at this time of year, so all our entrees and mains are accompanied and complemented by fresh seasonal ingredients.” The result is indeed a very interesting menu carefully curated by executive chef, Mark McCracken and his team. The BBQ pork belly is paired with charred cucumber and a beansprout slaw; the salmon main features red cabbage, borscht sauce, and dill, while with the homemade gnocchi comes spring carrots, broad beans, tarragon cream, and pistachio pesto. It is all extremely tempting and makes Fig a culinary venue well worth a visit. Dietary requirements are all well catered for. Ravi also encourages Cantabrians to book promptly so as not to miss The Elms Hotel’s renowned and very popular Christmas Day buffet lunch, which has so many selections you will need to have at least three helpings.

hough traditionally drunk “neat”, vodka often features in cocktails, such as the cosmopolitan, strawberry lime vodka soda, espresso martini, and fresh vodka lemon soda. Heresto vodka is an Aotearoa made, silky-smooth libation of pure vodka and 100% NZ spring water. This is the spirit to savour at leisure. Directors, Fraser and Mia, believe the strength of the company lies within our community. “The team’s core values are to work with local New Zealand venues and customers to help support our aligned charities. The name is about showing our support - Heresto the ones who need it.” For every bottle sold, two dollars is donated to any one of three leading charities – Women’s Refuge, NZ Flying Doctors Service, and I Am Hope. Add

flower power Fresh is best when it comes to flowers, and spring is amazing for fresh, fragrant seasonal blooms with which to add beauty to any room.

F

rom daffodils, freesias, gerberas, and tulips, to roses, orchids and hellebores, options are colourful, scented, and seemingly endless. Here are four suggestions for getting creative with flowers and water. 1 Casually arrange in your favourite glass vase.

Try one stunning display centre table, or several jars with similar blooms for outdoor chic. 2 Float flowers on short stems in a bowl of water. 3 Display flowers frozen in ice. Use small flowers in ice

cubes, or for more impact try filling a large balloon with water, and then stretch the top and push in small flower heads. Once frozen, peel off the balloon and display in a suitable bowl. 4 Try submerging flowers in a goldfish bowl

(or similar) of water, using silver wire and stones to anchor them. Orchids are particularly suitable for this.

Classy Christmas décor Take the time now to think about what Christmas means to you, and how you want to portray that via décor, before heading out and panic buying.

C

hristmas décor is often a stimulation overload, with lots of bright colours and kitschy items, which works well for children, although not necessarily adults. If elegance is what you desire, try a simple yet chic theme such as a silver and white colour scheme with pops of green to echo your traditional tree colour. Invest in shiny silver baubles, silver candle holders with long taper candles, and a neutral tree. Use crisp, white linen to cover the table, and decorate with green felt reindeer. Set the scene with fine China, crystal glassware, and silverware. Elegant napkin rings and place cards can further enhance your table setting. For those who aren’t a big fan of Christmas hype, and want to pare it back further, choose key décor pieces, a natural garland, pinecones to decorate the dining table, and have presents wrapped in recycled brown paper. Opt for eco-friendly Christmas crackers, made from recyclable materials, and containing useful or reusable items. Head to local Christmas markets and boutique shops to support locally owned and small businesses. You’re more likely to find creative, unique pieces at them to add a special ambience to your Christmas celebrations.

guest room

When beloved friends or family make the effort to visit and stay a few days, why not make their stay as luxurious as possible?

Cosy comforter, decent bed, and silky-smooth sheets

Start by ensuring your guests will have a comfortable sleep, and don’t skimp on getting a luxury comforter, high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, plus a decent mattress, that you’d be happy to sleep on. Add in extra soft and fluffy towel sheets so your guest can wrap up after a shower, and maybe a robe or two.

Storage

An ingeniously designed luggage rack is ideal for your guest to prop their suitcase or duffle bag on, and it will save them from having to bend over anytime they want to grab something.

Lamp lighting

Don’t forget to add a lamp so guests have the option of reading at night if they wish. Clever lamps are available that also include USB ports, making charging devices a breeze for guests. To ensure a cosy, relaxed vibe in the evening, think about a couple of delicious-smelling candles also.

WiFi password handy

An excellent idea for those tech-keen guests is to have a way to show your WiFi password. Whether it’s on a small chalkboard or you frame a printout, do whatever suits the aesthetics of the room, and it’ll save your guest from having to ask you for the password.

Toiletries

Stock the side table or guest bathroom with mini toiletries, such as those in hotel rooms. Top of the list is to have a spare toothbrush (or two) in case your guest has forgotten theirs, and follow with body soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Think sustainably and use gorgeous refillable containers.

Diffuser

To up the zen in your guest room consider purchasing a diffuser and a few essential oils so the room can become a relaxing haven for visitors (or you if you need a break).

festive fragrances Specific fragrances often evoke memories of special times and events, and so it goes with Christmas.

I

n keeping with that, Nevé has released three limited edition Christmas fragrances, curated by its founder, Tessa Lyes, to capture what a Kiwi Christmas truly smells and feels like. Check these out:

• Wild Pine + Juniper Berry - Evocative of freshly

cut Christmas trees, this earthy fragrance opens with notes of wild pine and effortlessly settles into a warming blend of juniper berry, balsam fir, and blackcurrant. An invigorating and majestic aroma reminiscent of fresh forest air and Christmas morning.

• Passionfruit Pavlova - This decadent festive

fragrance features layers of toasted meringue, soft marshmallow, and creamy vanilla. Finished with vibrant pops of fresh passionfruit, this Kiwi Christmas classic never fails to impress.

• Christmas Lily - The joy-filled essence of the festive season is captured with Christmas Lily. This longlasting, bright, floral fragrance carries a harmonious blend of creamy white lily petals with a soft, green leafy base - delighting with the perfume of fresh blooms for months to come.

WIN THIS

Metropol, in conjunction with Nevé has a Festive Favourites gift box, valued at $135, to giveaway. This Festive Favourites limited-edition set includes a medium-sized candle of each of the Christmas fragrances. glow up

Halloween needn’t be yet another expensive occasion. Metropol’s Gadget Guru Ian Knott looks at a crafty options for spicing things up.

H

alloween “celebrations” still struggle to get a foot-hold in New Zealand compared with the likes of the USA. Whether your family goes all-out, or simply lights the odd candle to make some spooky shadows, there are some quick and easy crafts that you can do at home to get into the spirit. For those who own a vinyl cutting machine, there’s a new range of glowin-the-dark iron-on material and vinyl to embellish your favourite t-shirt, bag, hat, or even a window or a wall. My Cricut Maker 3 made short work of

cutting elaborate patterns with the glow-in-the-dark material, and I found it even easier to ‘weed’ (peel off unwanted bits) than regular iron-on and vinyl. In normal lighting conditions, the material looks a creamy white colour, but in the dark, and especially after shining a bright light on it, your pattern of choice glows a brilliant luminous green. It’s just perfect for spooky window decals, such as spider webs, or skeletons, or scary faces on t-shirts. If glow-in-the-dark isn’t your vibe, there’s also a range of temperature-activated, colour-changing materials that allow you

Be the artist you always wanted to be Let us show you how!

to let your imagination run wild. Available in iron-on and vinyl, these materials come in heat-activated or cold-activated versions. Perfect for creative t-shirt designs (remember the old ‘Hypercolour’ t-shirts of the late 90s?), and even clever patterns on coffee-mugs or your favourite cocktail glasses. Watch the colours change before your eyes as the hot or cold temperature takes effect. Halloween aside, with Christmas just around the corner, these crafty solutions make for terrific personalised gifts that have a special little surprise when they’re exposed to temperature or light.

POOLS

Imagine a pool in the back yard for cooling off in, socialising around, and a bit of extra fitness. It’s a popular and delightful reverie for adults and children alike. However, the space between the dream of an in-ground pool, and the family joyfully splashing around can seem a bit of a stretch.

A

t NOVAspace it isn’t complicated because Chris Thelin and his team handle everything for you. “We are not a big conglomerate where you get handed from person to person and never know who you need to speak to. It is my company, and I am there with you every step of the way,” says Chris. The AquaTechnics pool shell that the team sell is the best quality pre-made fibreglass swimming pool coming into the country. ISO accredited in Australia, with anti-fade ColourGuard embedded in the surface of the shell and a lifetime structural guarantee. In his career, Chris has dealt with many pool shell brands and can

vouch for the vastly superior quality of the AquaTechnics product. “This pool is 30% stronger than its competitors,” says Chris, “hands down it is the best pool shell on the market by far.” If you are looking to install a pool, Chris is very happy to share his extensive knowledge with you. “If it should happen that another product is a more economical way for you to go, I’m absolutely going to let you know that. I know the pool installation business has seen a few operators come and go over the years so I understand that people can feel a bit wary. I’m all about building trust, and leaving my clients with a brilliant outcome.” The company offers a 360-degree service. “I’ve been landscaping my whole

working life. The first pool I installed was my own concrete pool 20 years ago,” says Chris. He takes clients through all parts of the process, and you’ll never feel lost with Chris talking you through. Pool suitability, design, consenting and project management are all part of the service, and you are dealing with Chris through pool choice and installation, landscape design, and landscape construction. “I’m proud to offer all of this in-house, and it is a great satisfaction that no project is signed off as complete until it meets my exacting standards.”

The move to growing one’s own fruit and vegetables is stronger than ever. It’s easy, satisfying, convenient, fun, and with the current cost of living, it’s also imperative.

O

f course, our parents and grandparents knew this all along, and it’s not a mystery for a select few. The bonus is knowing where produce has been grown and how. Vegetable gardens are no longer just the ‘vege patch down the back; now they can be attractive creative ‘potagers’ or kitchen gardens. The local home and garden retailer, Terra Viva, has a wide selection of seeds and fruit trees to help you get set up. Previous generations would be amazed at the range of vegetables available now. Rainbow Beetroot, Wong Bok, Sumo Pak Choi, Lebanese Lunchbox Cucumbers, and Cavallo Nero, are now widely known and readily available. Good quality, well-prepared, compostenriched soil is the key to growing sweet tender fruit and veggies. Veggies need to be grown quickly to achieve that tender

homegrown quality. Like us, they need small regular amounts of food. Ask the Terra Viva staff for advice on maximising results with the correct plant food. What’s easy to grow for self-sufficiency? Tomatoes love a hot sheltered spot, moist but well-drained soil (or Tomato Mix for containers), and regular feeding with tomato food. Over 40 varieties are available. Strawberries are a great way to turn children into gardeners. A hot sheltered spot in the ground, or in containers, using Strawberry Mix, regular watering, and feeding, plus bird netting (use the flexible fiberglass rods or stakes). New potatoes for Christmas are essential. At Terra Viva 14 varieties are available. Maris Anchor has a great waxy texture, and the versatile Agria is a good keeper over winter. Rhubarb is a real winner. It’s delicious and good for you. Rhubarb loves rich deep soil

with animal manure mixed in, and a partly shady position suits best. There are plenty of varieties to choose from. Feijoas are hardy, and easy, with delicious fruit, fresh, frozen, stewed, and made into chutney. Feijoa ice cream is superb. Patio Dwarf Fruit trees give a good structure in a kitchen garden. The spring flowers and high production will pay their way in terms of space used. Lemon trees, every home needs one and they’re the toughest of the citrus family. When growing them in containers choose the Dwarf Meyer as it’s better suited to containers than the regular Meyer and is just as productive. All gardening queries and questions are easily answered by the staff at Terra Viva, a team of keen gardeners with approximately 150 years of experience combined.

Pergola paradise BY NATALIA MACRIDES-PANTOS

With summer a hint away, and the festive season upon us, many will be thinking freshly squeezed lemons, salt-rimmed margarita glasses, and any good reason for an outdoor fiesta catch up.

W

ith hot days predicted, a pergola could add a touch of cool sophistication to your outdoor entertainment area, whether it’s an independent structure or an extension of your home. The pergola is said to date back to ancient Egypt as a simple and timeless outdoor design feature, consisting of a framework of vertical posts or pillars that support slats. Installing a pergola can create a defined space on your deck, in front of the pool, or in your garden. Experts say it may reduce the heat of your entertainment area by up to 67%, and provide elegant, nature-inspired shade to keep you sun safe. Some pergola variations include custom awnings with retractable covers for use throughout the changing weather and seasons. Other options include quality canvas shade sails to complement stylish bamboo

leisure furniture, open air slats, lattice-work, and bolted down metal structures. If you adore house plants, what better opportunity to create an exciting indoor/ outdoor potted garden fusion of lush green landscaping design elements. Try a few sexy succulents and leafy greens to aptly complement your relaxing outdoor chill-out zone, or go green with flowering vines. Furniture suggestions include bespoke non-solid wave design chairs made from open materials such as wire, slatted timber or rattan. They’ll create a more spacious, outdoor experience. Quality goes a long way, so invest in decent outdoor cushions, furniture covers, and furniture. Add sustainable pieces to the mix, pops of organic textures and rustics hues. Lastly think about aesthetically pleasing, multi-functional storage pieces. Upgrade now, and enjoy summer in style.

chieving that result for his clients all over North Canterbury gives Alan Davies immense satisfaction. “Mowing is what I do,” says Alan. “That’s why I called my business Al-Mows – obvious really.” Alan delights in driving his ride-on mowers or his push mower over any size of lawn – from a small size town lawn to one at a large life-style block. “I changed my occupation back in 2015 from being an engineer to working in the outdoors giving me the opportunity to meet lots of wonderful people and to help improve the appearance of their properties. Proper mowing techniques improves the quality of a lawn

and the health of the grass itself, and decreases weeds.” Alan’s engineering background ignited his creative side, and he is fostering this through a new venture. He has managed to source a supply of rustic sleepers that were originally decking timbers at Lyttelton Port, and he is displaying what they can be used for in a garden, at local farmers’ markets. “Clearly they can be used as edging material or to make planters, but we have also made them into what we call ‘feature garden art’. You can just give your imagination free reign. The rustic appearance has real appeal and certainly will make a feature statement in any garden.”

The Q5 has been a mainstay of the Audi family for many-a-moon, being a strong seller in the uber-competitive premium mid-sized SUV sector for over a decade. As the Ingolstadt brand moves towards a more electrifying future, the Q5 is the latest Audi product to be give a jolt by way of the new Q5 50 TFSI e. Yes, the Q5 is now a plug-in-hybrid.

A

s we have established, the Q5 TFSI e doesn’t scream electrification over its ICE counterpart, but it does look pretty swish with its S-line honeycomb front grill, roof rails, black badging and 21-inch Audi Sport alloys. The meat comes in the form of a 2.0L TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with the addition of a 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The system gives a total power output on 220kW/450Nm and will return 1.6L/100km in combined fuel consumption thanks to the battery. Said battery will allow the drive to cover 62km on electric drive alone. Driving in Hybrid mode allows the Q5 TFSI e to see saw between petrol and electric drive wherever it is need and Audi’s PEA or Predictive Efficiency Assist feature will read the road ahead and discern whether the car needs to recuperate electric energy with regenerative braking or just freewheel silently. With a Type 2 CCS charger, you can fully recharge your Q5 PHEV in a matter of hours. Inside it is incredibly refined. Everything you touch and operate is so well put together. You get everything you would expect in terms of toys. Plus, if you

download the myAudi app, you can check your Q5’s battery and range status, and a great deal more. The myAudi app allows customers to use the services from the Audi connect portfolio on their smartphones, which is particularly practical with electrified models. The app can also be used to start the charging process, programme the charge timer, and view the charge and consumption statistics. On the move the combination of electric torque and probably one of the most refined ICE power units in this class come together to give a seamless power and torque

delivery. It’s a quiet one too. It seamlessly see-saws between electric and petrol in hybrid mode, though you wouldn’t know it. The plug-in Q5’s ride is pretty much perfect. It’s wonderfully smooth, without compromise on the handling front. Naturally you stay tight and true in the bends thanks to the Quattro AWD, and the miles are munched up with ease. The Q5 TFSI e will set you back $114,990 plus ORC, but I would say its one of the best all-round premium SUVs out there. Keep it up Audi.

PURPLE ROAD EATER

A

It’s hard to imagine Porsche today without the 911. Ben Selby reports. mazingly this this icon has been with us for 60 years and in that time, has evolved into what many consider the perfect everyday usable sports car. What you see here is the 964 911. Built between the 930 and 993, it represents the best of both worlds in terms of an old-school analogue drive with technology not out of place today.

This one, currently for sale at Eyrewell Forest Motor Company, simply screams early 1990s retro cool. Plus, how many cars sport a purple paint job with an equally funky purple leather interior? As the second to last variant of the 911 to feature an air-cooled flat six engine, it sounds raucous and mechanical from start up right the way up to and beyond 6000rpm.

Even for today, the 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet is a speedster, especially if you drop down a few cogs of the four-speed automatic box and give it stick. Drop the electric fabric roof and you can see why this purple Porsche is immensely capable of a summer cruise, or a backroad blast. Keen drivers and lovers of automotive nostalgia queue here. It has your name written all over it.

Torque Talk WITH BEN SELBY

TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS We have all experienced road rage at one time or another.

W

hether you are on the receiving end, or you’ve had a bad day, and you vent your frustration on the motorist next to you because they dared to drive 5km/h slower than the speed limit. Findings from a study last year, conducted by Kantar and AA Insurance, stated that a third of Kiwi motorists were

involved in heated incidents while driving. Some time ago I accidentally carved up someone in traffic, and the driver in question followed me for 10 minutes just to pull alongside me and say that I was an (expletive), and that he was going to give me a hiding. I think that if I’d played into this game of barking at each other, he probably would’ve done just that. Fortunately, nothing more happened.

Spare a thought for the poor people who have experienced worse. These angry and arrogant people regard the roads as their own, thinking stuff the rest of us. It’s not the end of the world if you lose 30 seconds of your commute time. Without meaning to sound like a certain former Prime Minister, when it comes to driving, be kind to fellow motorists.
