y first job as a college student, working the graveyard shift at Ferrell’s Donuts, involved driving the hill to what was then known as Bethany Bible College to deliver boxes of the sweet confections at 3am. While many things have changed in Scotts Valley in the intervening years and my days of dipping doughnuts in chocolate are just a memory now, it’s good to see Ferrell’s on this year’s winners list.

Since launching Faves & Raves in 2007, the Press Banner has sought to highlight the best establishments in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley, with the astute guidance of local experts, who happen to be our readers.

The pandemic and the publication’s ownership change delayed last year’s F&R, so as we publish the 14th set of winners in what should have been the 15th year, the pause gave us a few months to rethink this issue.

Our reinvention plan is to dive deeper into the two areas we serve by producing an issue dedicated to the businesses and amenities unique to each one. The first issue, published in February, contained “The Best of the San Lorenzo Valley.” Now, we bring you “The Best of Scotts Valley.”

It gives us great pleasure to highlight the work of internationally renowned impressionist painter and longtime Scotts Valley resident James Scoppettone on our cover. This recent oil painting features a fruit tree in a blossoming orchard.

Spring is especially uplifting this year as it coincides with the rebirth of normalcy after a long hibernation. We encourage everyone to support local businesses whenever possible to enable a healthy hometown economy, keep jobs here and ensure that favorite establishments remain.

This issue is dedicated to everyone who kept it going, through thick and thin.
