Ms. Davis, Coordinator of the Oklahoma City Vocational School of Practical Nursing, spoke as a representative of the faculty of that group in requesting that the Board respond as to why the teachers of that school are not on the certified teacher salary scale? Ms. Davis distributed copies of printed materials to members of the Board. Members of the Board responded: Mrs. (Betty) Hill - Can we see that this group does get a response? I have visited with some of them and I do know that they are on a 12-month schedule. I would like to ask that they get a response. They have waited a year and have been very patient.

Dr. Smith - They*"have had an oral response, but we will see that a formal response is submitted to this.

Mr. English - I suspect that if they have had some sort of an oral response, that maybe they are not pleased with the oral response that they received, and possibly they are asking for the Board also to enter in here and make some sort of a decision. Although we have received a response, I wonder if staff could go over the information in this packet and have a response for us this week or the next week, so that the Board could schedule some discussion on it, say, in a couple of weeks? Dr. Start - We will be meeting next week and it can be placed on the agenda next week.

Mr. Nation spoke in support of Vocational English being included in the curriculum of the Oklahoma City schools. Members of the Board inquired:

Mrs. (Betty) Hill - Are you saying that Vocational English would not fit in under Business English? Do you feel like Business English is too detailed or too involved or something?

Mr. Nation - Business English, as to my understanding, is development of skills that a person would use in an office. True; these things are needed and Vocational English will touch on many of those things, but most of my students aren't going to be in offices and a large number of them don't see how English is relevant to them. Through my program they begin to see how it can help them, because I present English in the way that they are really going to be faced with it.
