January 2026

new info I always love the start of the year because it feels full of promise and opportunity, much like the magic that fills our libraries in January and February during the Winter Reading Challenge. Beginning Jan. 1, adults are invited to take part in one of our most anticipated annual traditions. Get a bingo on your card with five unique books to earn this year’s Winter Reading mug, or take on the full challenge of reading 25 books for an entry into our grand prize drawing. But the real prize is continuing that lifelong habit of reading. Whether you squeeze in a few chapters before bed, listen to an audiobook on the Libby app during your commute or dive into a favorite magazine, it all counts. This month is also full of creative opportunities through our continued partnership with Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center. In collaboration with the current “ArtNow” exhibit, we’re inviting local artists to visit our libraries, share their work, and lead hands-on activities, with some events held in the library and others offered as take-home projects. If this sparks your art curiosity, stop by the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Reference Library at our Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library. The collection features art history overviews, spotlights on specific movements, artist biographies, exhibit catalogs and art criticism. If you want to keep the arts and crafts energy going, Craft Fest returns to the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library Jan. 24 with demonstrations and local arts groups, open to all skill levels. We also get to honor someone who is not only a musical and cultural icon but an incredible supporter of libraries: Dolly Parton. We will celebrate her birthday, or as we like to call it, Dolly Day, at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library on Jan. 16. Join us for one of the most unexpected crossovers of all time with the Dolly Parton and Edgar Allan Poe Birthday Party, since they actually share a birthday. In true Dolly fashion, we invite you to celebrate by enrolling your little ones in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, an impactful early literacy program that mails high-quality books each month to children under five to help build strong reading skills from the start. Families can also support a love of reading through our storytimes and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, where parents can log every book they share with their little one from birth to kindergarten to earn fun rewards like stickers, a plush reading buddy at 500 books and a tote bag and certificate at 1,000, all while building a lifelong love of reading. And speaking of a lifelong love of reading, if you were the type of person who counted down the days to your school book fair, you will love Readerpalooza at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library Jan. 31. This grown-up book fair returns for its second year with curated book displays, swag, author spotlights, bookish crafts and opportunities to connect with fellow readers. It has been one year since I joined the organization, and I could not be happier with the community I’ve found. The library is truly for everyone, whether you are using it as a study space, a meeting place, a way to stay connected with digital resources, a place to build good habits or simply steal a quiet moment in a busy week. From storytimes and book clubs to technology classes and cultural celebrations, we invite you to make your local library an essential part of your 2026 story. Warm regards,

Jason F. Kuhl, MSLIS CEO, Metropolitan Library System

Unlock the Power of Your Library Card By Zoe Elrod, Internal Communications Coordinator

Your library card is more than a way to borrow books; it is a key to learning, entertainment, personal growth and community connection. A library card is free for residents of Oklahoma County and gives you access to a full range of services. Plus, students in area schools can use their ONEcard, which automatically enrolls them in a partnership between Metro Library and local schools, giving them access to the same great resources. With physical and digital materials, educational tools, literacy programs, events and essential community services, that little card opens the door to big possibilities. Borrow, Browse, and Stream Your Way to Lifelong Learning With your library card, you can explore more than 1.5 million physical items including books, DVDs, CDs and graphic novels. You can also access a digital library filled with eBooks, eAudiobooks and digital magazines, with titles ranging from fiction and memoir to cooking, home improvement and self-help. If you want movies, music or comics, services such as hoopla let you stream or download films, television, albums, comics, and audiobooks anytime on your personal device. Online research tools, databases, and skill-building learning platforms are ready and waiting too. Whether you are earning a certificate, searching for your family history, preparing for a test, or learning something new just for fun, your local library helps learning stay accessible. 6

Services and Support for Everyone Each Metropolitan Library System (MLS) branch offers public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, and scanning. Meeting rooms and study spaces are available for reservation, perfect for group work, community meetings, or quiet focus time. For Oklahoma County residents who are age 65 or older or who are homebound, Library by Mail sends books, DVDs, and other materials directly to your home, ensuring the library is always within reach. MLS also provides support including citizenship resources, voter information, financial literacy tools and help during tax season. These services are designed to empower every member of our community. Building Early Readers Families can put their library card to work by joining 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a program that helps young children develop early literacy skills and a love of reading long before they start school. Children from birth until kindergarten can participate, and families log every book they share together, whether it is a board book, picture book or audiobook. Children earn fun rewards along the way including stickers, a plush reading buddy at 500 books, and a special tote bag and certificate when they reach 1,000. The most meaningful reward is the one that

lasts a lifetime: strong language development, storytelling skills, curiosity and a love of reading. The library also partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to mail a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book each month to children from birth through age five in Oklahoma County. Together with storytimes, take-home kits, and other literacy programs, families can build a strong foundation for learning one book at a time. A Community for All Ages The Metropolitan Library System is a lively community hub filled with programs and events for every age and interest. Families can enjoy storytimes and hands-on activities, while teens and adults can participate in author events, educational workshops, creative classes and cultural programs. And if you have an idea for a new club or event, your library staff would love to help make it happen. Libraries grow stronger with community input. Whether you’re reading with your little one, attending a craft program, watching a favorite movie, researching for work or school, discovering a new hobby or gathering with neighbors, your library card makes it possible.

"The Shining" Stephen King

FICTION KIN

"The Third Gilmore Girl: A Memoir" Kelly Bishop

794.45028 B6225t BIO

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook

If you're like me and like to keep it spooky year-round, “The Shining,” is a perfect winter read. Stuck in a huge hotel with nothing but time to write, overthink and explore, Jack Torrance's slow descent into madness is a page-turning, spine-chilling read. If you thought the movie was scary, buckle up for the ride that is one of Stephen King's most infamous works. The Shining provides all of the eerily cozy vibes you're looking for: snow topped mountains, old hotel rooms, rickety staircases and fireplaces, winding mazes and beautiful Colorado scenery. The library also has the 1980 film and the underrated miniseries, released in 1997, available for checkout.

I’ve watched Gilmore Girls more times than I care to share, and the cast of characters is a big part of why it’s my comfort show. But I never fully realized that Kelly Bishop - the woman behind the Gilmore matriarch, Emily - is an absolute icon. After reading “The Third Gilmore Girl,” I definitely do. She’s an absolute legend. She walks us through her journey from chorus dancer in theater shows to Tony Award-winning Broadway actress for “A Chorus Line” (which she somehow also inspired). Mind blown. She also digs into her on-screen career, from how she became Baby’s mom in films like Dirty Dancing to, of course, her years on my favorite TV show Gilmore Girls. Throughout this memoir, she’s open and honest about her personal life and relationships, never shying away from the times where she wasn’t a perfect person. Bishop shares her life story with the same sass and feistiness that I think of when I think of her Gilmore Girls character, Emily. While I’m just an honorary Gilmore Girl (also known as a millennial girl obsessed with the show), she’ll always be “The Third Gilmore Girl.”

"Death on Deck" Courtny Bradley

MYSTERY BRA

"Arsenic and Adobo" Mia P. Manansala

MYSTER MAN

Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook

Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook

Embark on a thrilling nautical adventure in the first installment of Courtny Bradley's captivating, fast-paced cozy mystery series. Meet Lisa-May Midé and her Cruising Crew—a spirited group of women in their 60s who find their relaxing retirement cruise turned upside down when they discover the body of an unpleasant fellow traveler, Seth. The locked room setting of the cruise ship adds an exciting layer of complexity to the whodunit, because the killer is still on board. As Lisa-May, a sharp-witted retired anthropologist with a keen analytical mind, and her three lifelong best friends—Wilma, Charlotte, and Beverly—feel compelled to unravel the mystery, they must navigate a ship full of secrets. What makes this murder-at-sea so delightful is the strong female friendship at its core. The witty dialogue and fierce loyalty of the crew provide a warm, humorous anchor as they piece together clues, support Lisa-May's amateur sleuthing, and seek justice for those wronged. This is a wonderfully fun, high-sass mystery that proves the journey to solving a crime is just as exciting as the destination. Read this if you like sassy senior sleuths, locked-room (or locked-ship) mysteries, and the camaraderie of “The Golden Girls” or coziness and puzzles of “Murder, She Wrote.”

A bad breakup, nosy aunts, and a mystery. What could go wrong? Lila Macapagal moves back in with her family for a fresh start, only to find herself embroiled in multiple schemes. A few prying aunties plotting romance is manageable. Being tangled up in a possible murder? Not ideal or good for business. While working to save Tita Rosie’s restaurant, Lila takes on solving the twisted mystery, where she’s the prime suspect. She can only hope a few sweets and amateur detective work keeps her off the police’s radar. Start the new year and your Winter Reading Challenge, with the first book in the Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery series by Mia P. Manansala. This cozy mystery is perfect for readers looking for a fun, mouth-watering read. As a bonus, each book contains recipes for the delicious food you read about along the way. A great way to “bake” the spirits bright!

Hallie Waugh: Metro Library's Poet Laureate

Hallie Waugh, the Metropolitan Library System’s new Poet Laureate, is helping spark a love of poetry across our community through readings, workshops and other library programming. An Oklahoma City–based poet and educator, her work explores spirituality, embodiment and connection to place, with poems published in several national literary journals. As part of her role, Waugh is sharing quarterly poems in “Info Magazine,” including this month’s featured poem, “Old Dogs.” Learn more at metrolibrary.org/poetlaureate.

Old Dogs If you want to learn new tricks—no matter how old or set in your ways—try loving someone. Even minor distances long to be collapsed, and certain skills can start to close the gaps. Imagine: the 60-something lover with a sudden snorkeling obsession, or the child whose pen pal inspires an amateur break-dancing phase. How much we’ll learn for love. As a mother, I take up infinite new choreographies: football holds, flange fittings, baby wraps, five-point harnesses, tongue tie corrections, how to move moth-like through a room’s grainy dark. Further: how to stretch an extra, tensile sense beyond my body to read the air for danger, strangers, choking hazards, busy streets. To keep my child close by sheer willpower while space and time diligently split us. Looking back, I see my mother did much the same for me. When I was ten and she nearly forty, we took up rollerblading. She bought knee and elbow pads in both our sizes, risked injury across our neighborhood’s endless aggregate. I can picture our street, me flying round the curve, arms flailing. She was there trailing me, wobbly but willing to learn just about anything to make up the distance.
