As 2025 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible community we have here at the Metropolitan Library System. January marks one year since joining this organization and since making Oklahoma City my new home. Moving to a new city is no small feat, but in this first year, I’ve been inspired by our neighbors, our team, and this community's love of learning and discovery.
When I arrived, I held tightly to my belief that libraries are so much more than books, and this year has proven that sentiment to be true again and again. For me, this year was a testament to what a library can and should be. Our 19 branches are buzzing with activity. We've rolled out over 11,100 in-person programs, marking a 22% jump from last year. Even more impressive, our events drew in more than 350,000 people—an incredible 72% boost in attendance.
That’s 350,000 people experiencing curiosity, creativity and connection. Whether it’s storytime for little ones, a book club for adults or technology classes and cultural celebrations, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy. Every program is a reminder that libraries help people and communities grow together.
We also celebrated a big milestone: 100 years of service at our Stockyards City Library. A full century later, that branch still embodies what makes libraries timeless: a welcoming space for everyone, in every season of life.
And speaking of seasons, the holidays are in full swing at your local library! December is full of festive fun, including DIY Wrapping Stations, holiday and Kwanzaa crafts, a Noon Year’s Eve Dance Party for kids, and a DIY beaded Christmas spider craft inspired by European winter storytelling traditions. These events capture the joy, creativity and community that are hallmarks of this season.
Looking ahead, 2026 will bring even more reasons to visit your library. One I’m especially excited about is the opening of our new Edmond Library, scheduled for late Fall. This beautiful space connected to the YMCA will expand access to resources, technology and learning opportunities, helping us serve our growing community in new ways.
As I reflect on this first year, I’m deeply thankful to everyone who makes our libraries thrive, from the dedicated staff who bring our mission to life to the guests who remind us why that mission matters. Most of all, I’m grateful for the welcome I’ve received to a new place, a new job and a new community.
From all of us at the Metropolitan Library System, we wish you a season filled with joy, connection and curiosity, and plenty of books along the way.
I look forward to all that 2026 brings. Thank you for being part of our community.

The holiday season is a time for connection, creativity and community, and your local library is here to make the season even brighter and a lot more affordable.
This year, skip the crowded stores and, instead, head to the Makerspaces at the Bethany, Belle Isle and Almonte Libraries. With 3D printers, Cricut machines and sewing machines, you can design and craft personalized gifts that are as unique as the people receiving them. Makerspace reservations are free for all library cardholders, and each visitor can have one active session at a time. A signed user agreement ensures everyone can safely enjoy the equipment, and library staff are always happy to help you get started.
Imagine designing custom ornaments with a Cricut, stitching cozy handmade scarves or printing personalized keychains and figurines on a 3D printer. Not only will your gifts stand out, but they’ll also carry the extra magic that comes from something made with care. Plus, you’ll be part of a community of library creatives!
Throughout the season, many libraries are also hosting holiday crafting events, where you can make ornaments, beaded treasures and other festive creations. It’s a great opportunity to craft alongside neighbors, friends and family in a creative space. Some libraries are even holding giftwrapping parties, where you can bring your presents and wrap them in community.
For families, another fun library offering is the Kids’ Holiday Shoppe at Southern Oaks Library Dec. 16. This
"There’s something special about making gifts instead of buying them. In the makerspace, you can wood-burn an ornament, cut custom cards on the Cricut or create a tiny zine for someone you love. Every project has that perfectly imperfect human touch, and that’s what makes it a cool gift."
- Librarian Lindsay Jones
event gives children the chance to choose gifts for their loved ones, helping them experience the joy of giving in a fun, supportive setting.
Even if you can’t make it to the library in person, you can still tap into the spirit of creativity from home. With the library’s eResources, you’ll find a wealth of digital crafting inspiration, from step-by-step guides and video tutorials to eBooks filled with DIY ideas.
Whether you’re designing handmade cards, baking festive treats or learning a new skill, your library card unlocks a world of creative possibilities right at your fingertips.

This winter, the Metropolitan Library System is partnering with the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center to celebrate “ArtNow 2025: Materials and Boundaries.” Curated by Alexa Goetzinger and Virginia Sitzes, the exhibition features new works by Oklahoma artists exploring place, identity and materiality through innovative materials and perspectives rooted in the state’s culture. It is on display at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center through Feb. 15, 2026.
To bring these ideas into the community, our libraries will host a series of free, hands-on programs inspired by the exhibition and funded by Kirkpatrick Foundation. These programs reflect the library’s ongoing commitment to art literacy, helping community members engage with creativity as a form of reflection and connection.
Throughout December and January, libraries will offer takehome kits and creative workshops that invite participants of all ages to explore their own connections to place and identity including:
• Yarn Painting Take-Home Kits - available across several library locations (scan QR code for full list): Create fiber art landscapes inspired by artist Irmgard Guel, combining paint and yarn to express how we shape, and are shaped by, our surroundings.
• ArtNow: Kids Art Time - Belle Isle Library, Dec. 30: A drop-in afternoon of artmaking and exploration, where young artists can experiment with materials and styles.

• Identity Collage Station - Warr Acres Library, Jan. 2-9: Kids can create textured self-portraits and explore selfexpression through color and mixed media.
• REPRINT: Second Lives for Our Own Materialsavailable across several library locations (scan QR code for full list): Inspired by artist Sarah Sullivan Sherrod, participants can transform old fabric into new works of art through painting and Gelli printing.
• Mini Inflatables - Choctaw Library, Jan. 15 and Southern Oaks Library, Jan. 24: Join artist Katelynn Knick to discover the fun of inflatable art! See her colorful installation "Space for Joy" from the ArtNow exhibition, then create your own mini-inflatable sculpture using everyday materials.
• Embroidery Painting – Northwest Library, Jan 14 and Ralph Ellison Library, Jan 17: Meet Oklahoma artist Irmgard Geul as she shares her mixed media and fiber art techniques, then create your own artwork inspired by her process.

"You Weren’t Meant to be Human"
Andrew Joseph White
Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
Hidden off the back roads of Appalachia are hives of worms, flies, flesh and rot. These hives seek out people at their most vulnerable and offer them a fresh start in their cult in exchange for devotion. Crane, a deeply haunted transgender man, is one of these people. Crane is grateful. He can escape a life that he thought would’ve killed him. However, when Crane mistakenly becomes pregnant, the other cult members intend on fulfilling the hive’s desires against Crane’s own.
“You Weren’t Meant to Be Human” is author Andrew Joseph White’s debut into adult literature, and it doesn’t disappoint, showcasing the horrors of fighting for bodily autonomy that many people face. Crane has to fight tooth and nail to regain any sense of control from those that will do everything in their power to strip him of it. The imagery is vivid and stomach-turning, to really pull readers into the terrifying world of the novel. There are content warnings available in the book for those who may be sensitive to darker themes.

"Death in the
Betrayal, and the Lost Dream of Jonestown"
Candace Fleming
Available formats: Book, eAudiobook
Jim Jones, founder of Peoples Temple, is known colloquially as the cult leader whose followers "drank the Kool-Aid.” The complex truth, detailed in this carefully researched YA nonfiction title, shows Jones as increasingly unstable and drug-addicted over the course of his life, as he eventually duped hundreds of followers to move from California to an unsettled territory in South America. It was here where they would have the freedom to fully embrace his ideology.
Jones' dark charisma, false promises and mind control tactics helped him create an organizational power structure that set his core followers up with too much to lose if they stood up to him. Fleming is a master of narrative nonfiction and skillfully uses first-person accounts to bring the truth to light, showing the slow burn of Jones' increasingly dark narrative as he started preaching the heroism of revolutionary suicide. When concerned family members involved the U.S. government, Jones activated his suicide plan and ordered the murder of the 900 innocent people who followed him. This is a compelling, though difficult to read, story that is hard to put down, depicting a chilling account of a dangerous man wielding power through cult dynamics and authoritarian tactics.

What lengths would you go to for survival? How much could you endure before abandoning all hope? “Shadows on the Ice” urges readers to ponder these painful questions. Only recently translated into English, this graphic novel chronicles the extraordinary experiences of a Uruguayan rugby team that survived a deadly plane crash in the Andes mountains in the early nineteen-seventies. Essentially an “I Survived” book for grownups, “Shadows on the Ice” is a pageturning thriller that reveals what it truly takes to cheat death. The art is dynamic, using color to move emotion through the pages and rendering the desperate survivors with harsh lines and heavy shadows.
“Shadows on the Ice” is a frigid, frightening tale of physical limits, friendship, and finally, freedom, as the players make their incredible trek to safety. If you still want to learn more about the disaster, check our catalog for the book “Alive” by Piers Paul Read or the DVD of the same title.

Andy Weir, author of the acclaimed “The Martian,” makes a bold return to Science Fiction in “Project Hail Mary.” Weir thrusts readers into the disoriented mind of Ryland Grace, who wakes up onboard a spacecraft with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As fragments of memory return, Grace finds himself in a race against time on a galactic scale.
A finalist for the 2022 Hugo Award, and soon to be a major motion picture in March 2026, “Project Hail Mary” crafts a thrilling, deeply human story seen through the eyes of a reluctant scientist whose curiosity and compassion may be humanity’s last hope.

As the year comes to a close, many of us start thinking about what we want to learn, create or achieve in the year ahead. Whatever your age or interests, the Metropolitan Library System offers endless opportunities to keep learning and growing.
For young writers, Edmond Library is inviting students grades 2–8 to take part in its third annual Young Storytellers Publishing Workshop, a ten-week program designed to nurture emerging authors. Participants are asked to submit a complete draft of a picture book or short story by Dec. 21, following the library’s submission guidelines. From these entries, the top ten storytellers will be selected to join the workshop, held Sunday afternoons from Jan. 4 to March 8. During the program, participants will receive mentorship to refine their stories, which will then be published through the library and added to its circulating collection. Acceptance notices will be sent the week of Dec. 29, and the workshop will conclude with a publishing ceremony at Edmond Library.
Adult writers can also continue their creative journey with the upcoming workshop “I Wrote a Novel – Now What?” on Dec. 14 at Edmond Library. This session will help participants navigate the next steps of editing and publishing after completing a manuscript.
For adults looking to expand their education, the Metropolitan Library System now offers the Excel Adult High School Program, which allows adults age 24 and older to earn an accredited high school diploma online in as little as two years. Applicants must live in Oklahoma County and have a Metro Library card in good standing. More information is available at metrolibrary.org/excelhs.

Students of all ages can also take advantage of HelpNow, a free online learning platform that offers live tutoring, a writing lab, practice tests and virtual study rooms. Another valuable resource, LearningExpress Library, provides study guides and practice tests for exams such as the GED, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, CDL and NCLEX-RN. It also includes career tools like resumé builders, interview guides and computer tutorials.
For lifelong learners, the library offers a variety of eResources that allow you to explore new interests at your own pace. LinkedIn Learning provides more than 16,000 self-paced courses covering topics such as business, technology, design and education. If you are feeling creative, check out Creativebug, available through Hoopla’s BingePass, which features over 1,000 instructional videos on arts and crafts such as painting, sewing, knitting and baking.
Whether you are learning a new craft, earning your diploma or publishing your first story, the library has the tools to help you reach your goals. This season, and throughout the year, make the library your go-to place to learn something new.

This month, as you gather with friends and family (genetic, adopted and/or chosen), you may swap old stories, look at photos and remember some of your shared history. While you’re at it, why not take a moment to think about preserving some of that history?
The first step in any project like this is to take stock of what you have like digital or film photographs, home movies, scrapbooks, recipe cards, old documents (letters, postcards and the like) and other mementos.
Next, consider what goals or results you’re after. Are you simply saving backups of what you already have, or do you want to create something more? What’s most important to you: keeping things secure or making them easy to share with other family members? Your goals will help you decide what to do next.
Let’s start with the basics. Whatever you want to save should stay in a climate-controlled space. That means not in a shed, garage, attic, unfinished basement, or anywhere outdoors. Different types of materials have their own ideal temperatures, but they generally prefer a steady and comfortable climate.
Another good rule of thumb: whenever possible, don’t leave anything rolled up, folded, leaning or stored in any position other than laid out flat. And while we tend to think of ink as being more permanent, it’s also prone to running, so use a pencil whenever you’re adding notes and details. Always feel free to leave notes; not everyone will recognize the people in a photograph or know exactly when you took that one road trip. Memory is a slippery thing, so when it comes to notes, the more the merrier. Keep in mind that any wear and tear from handling will add up over time. You’ll want to reduce how much you need to grab, grip, pull, or otherwise handle the items you’re trying to save. That’s part of why we “archive-y folks” like to place things in folders instead of envelopes.
We have plenty of free resources available if you want to learn more about preserving what you already have:
There’s always the option to make something new. My favorite is a personal history interview. We’ve got resources and guides for every step of the process, but the core of it is recording an interview with someone who has an interesting story, so their experiences and their voice are preserved for others to hear.
I even interviewed my grandparents, Mary Moore Nance and John Nance — that recording is available to listen to online.
More personal history interviews are available online here:
