A message from Deborah Mann

Fellow Members,

As February unfolds, the conversation often turns to love in the air. I find myself reflecting on what makes our Club truly special – you, my fellow Members, and the warm community we have built together. This month, I encourage you to share the joy and privilege of Membership with other exceptional women in your circles. Our Club has always thrived on the diverse perspectives and talents that each new Member brings. Think of that friend who would love our monthly book groups or our regular bridge or Mah Jongg games, or your colleague who has mentioned wanting to expand her professional network in an intimate setting. By introducing her to our Club, you are not just growing our Membership; you are enriching our community with new friendships and possibilities. I am going back to my mantra: Members, Members, Members!

Speaking of intimate settings, we have a strong, diverse calendar of events for February. Those on the Event and Activities Committees (supported by a dedicated staff), are working so hard to think of every detail to ensure a satisfying experience. I mention events frequently, not because of my profession, but because attending events is one very productive way to support our Club. One continuing goal is to increase our event attendance.

As we celebrate this month of love, let's celebrate what we cherish about our Club: the lasting friendships formed, the engaging conversations shared, and the sanctuary we have created together. Our Club is more than just a beautiful building; it is a community of extraordinary women supporting and inspiring one another.

On an entirely different note, but noteworthy as part of the Member experience, most of you know the bar menu recently changed. Please be aware that anything served on the lunch menu at the Club may be ordered at night. This includes, but is not limited to, the chicken pot pie, soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, or power bowl. We all have our favorites but since many of us eat at the Club several times per week, changing things up is essential. Chef Damien makes every effort to keep us all happy – not the easiest task but he is up to the challenge!

Wishing you a great month.

Kindly,

OFFICE OF THE GENERAL MANAGER

A message from Tom Schunn

Fulfilling Goals

I am pleased to share with you the progress we have made in aligning our Club’s operations with financial goals and ultimately long-term fiscal health. There were some dramatic cutbacks in staffing and expenditures at the beginning of the year. These were administered with an approach to have minimal impact on the Member experience. We remain committed to providing a premier environment for women of all ages, where athletic, cultural, and educational activities come together in an atmosphere of comfort and camaraderie.

Reorganizing Things

Some positions were recently eliminated while others were combined. Jordan Chavez is now the Membership Director. All

membership inquiries should be directed through her. Christina Lee is now our Communications Manager. She has a full plate of duties ranging from newsletters, flyers, social media, websites, and more. Brady Knight’s title has been updated to best reflect his responsibilities. He is now the Food and Beverage Manager. Maintenance Supervisor Elmer Hernandez quietly announced his intention to resign a couple of months ago. Elmer possessed a positive, can-do attitude, and everyone at the Club appreciated him immensely. He is moving on to work in software sales. Eric Ortiz will be fulfilling Elmer’s role in the future. Please convey a warm welcome to Eric when you see him around the Club.

Reaching Members

We are implementing several initiatives to enhance both membership engagement and prospective member activities. The Membership Committee is ramping up efforts to engage prospective members through open houses, personal outreach, and a refreshed website. Member referrals and social media are proving to be valuable strategies in generating interest. The focus is member retention and recruitment. The very best prospects are friends, family and colleagues referred from our existing members. The overall membership count has remained stable for many months, starting back in Q1 of 2024. The goal for 2025 is to grow the membership.

Increasing Participation

As we continue to assess the interests of our membership, we are prioritizing events that attract the largest attendance. Music, lectures, and themed social gatherings appear most popular, and we will continue to highlight such offerings. Our committees have been tasked with bringing a "table" to events. We want to enhance revenue streams by promoting amenities, events and lodging. We endeavor to increase activities with our reciprocal clubs and local businesses.

Maintaining Metro

Some of the activities happening from a facilities maintenance and improvement perspective are addressing much-needed repairs in our guest rooms, including fixing phones, internet, TV, and the heating systems. Completion of the Garden Room has been delayed due to the discovery of leaks coming from the kitchen, specifically floor drains and other penetrations in the floor. These leaks are not from the recent plumbing repairs in the ceiling and walls above the Garden Room. The funds have been approved to resurface the tennis and pickleball courts. The timing for this project will be during the summer Club closure at the beginning of July in order to minimize disruptions. See you around the Club!

Traveling can be such a fun way to get to know other women and spend quality time with friends. This past fall, 10 Met Club ladies took a big bite out of the Big Apple. Kavita Khanna and I both lived in NYC years ago and thought it would be fun to plan a trip there.

One of the loveliest aspects of the trip

was the intimacy of our stay at the reciprocal Colony Club. It felt as if we were staying in a friend’s home on Park Avenue. The rooms were pretty and clean with breakfast delivered every morning. To top it off, they had the most idyllic rooftop bar where we met for drinks before heading out for the night - a rarity in NYC.

Some highlights of our trip included a wonderful, guided gallery tour in Chelsea that showcased women artists from California; our very own private tour of MoMA; and an installation of nearly 100 life-size elephants, sculpted from an invasive plant species in India, scattered throughout the Meatpacking District. We went to the theatre on Broadway and the iconic Comedy Cellar in the West Village. We sipped decadent cocktails at Cafe Carlyle while listening to Julio Iglesias Jr. We did lots of walking and stumbled on a sample sale one day. We even had the treat of a couple charming NYC resident grandsons join us at different times. This was my fourth Met Club trip and, like the others, the best part was the group of women.

Our Giving Community

Now that we’ve settled into the new year, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible impact the Metropolitan Club continues to have on our lives. We relish games of bridge and Mah Jongg together, share healthy meals and workouts, and learn from the many speakers the Club presents, as well as from each other.  We have a grand, historic Home Away from Home where we share in a sisterhood of women, continuing a tradition that has been sustained for 110 years. The past few years have challenged the Club in substantial ways. We lost many Members due to Covid's restrictions, post-pandemic lifestyle changes and San Francisco's urban issues. Our clubhouse needed a new a Garden Room floor and our swimming pool required major repair. Thanks to the incredible work of our leadership team and the generosity of our donors, we have been able to rise to the occasion.

The strength of our Members' commitment has kept us going, but 2025 will be the year to step up our giving. We hope during the upcoming spring campaign, each Member will donate whatever she can, based on the belief that giving generously to the Metropolitan Club will ensure the continuation of our traditions and the joys we all share. Whether you are a repeat donor or a first-time giver, the participation of each and every one of us is critical in 2025.

The Club was organized by a group of leading San Franciscan women, created as a "Giving Community" to nurture each other as active, independent women.  Over periods of war and peace, economic setbacks and even the Covid pandemic, we came back to strength.  We are working to regain the moment when our Membership was nearly double what it is today.  We are growing again, but our journey is far from over. When you respond to the call for our 2025 campaign, please embrace our tradition and give generously.

February is American Heart Month

Screening for heart health is important for women, as cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death for

women globally. Heart disease symptoms can often be different in women compared to men, and certain risk factors may be more prevalent or have a greater impact.

Risk Factors to Be Aware Of:

• Age: The risk of heart disease increases with age.

• Menopause: The decline in estrogen during menopause can increase the risk of heart disease.

• Obesity and overweight: Excess weight, especially around the abdomen, increases heart disease risk.

• Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.

• High Cholesterol and high blood pressure.

• Physical inactivity and poor diet.

Give your heart some love this month by staying active! Join one of our fitness classes or try out a game of pickleball at the Met Club. After your workout, enjoy a nutritious heart-healthy lunch specially prepared by Chef Damien’s team.
