OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

A message from Laura Pilz New Members = New Energy As president of the Club, one of the most inspiring things I do is have lunch with our new Members. I am continually impressed and delighted by the fantastic women who are discovering our Club and choosing to join us. It is amazing that, despite our long history in San Francisco, many women are not familiar with our Club and are surprised when they are introduced to all we provide. I want to share some of the things new Members ask that are great reminders to us all. Dining Options and Reservations Do I always need to make a reservation to dine at the Club? Yes and No. We appreciate it when Members make reservations because it helps us plan both for staff and food preparation. But we want to accommodate Members’ spontaneity and to encourage Members to always think of the Metropolitan Club as their fist choice for any time they want to dine. Dining hours are published on page two of The Arrow and on the website and App. Private Events at the Club What type of events may I host at the Club? As our Home Away From Home, the Club can be the venue for making special memories. Members have enjoyed sharing life events with friends and family at the Club, from baby showers to engagement parties, weddings, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and celebrations of life for loved ones. One of my most special memories is the 60th birthday party I hosted for my mother in the Persian Room. We talk of it even now and she is 96! Exercising Mind and Body How do I learn to —play bridge, pickle ball, tennis, Mah Jongg, knit, improve my Italian, etc.? While our Club was founded as a women’s athletic club, it has expanded to support women in lifelong learning both mentally and physically. Through our interest groups and special events, Members can exercise their minds and gain new skills while gaining new friends and mentors. committee chairs and Interest Group coordinators are always available to discuss their programs and welcome new Members. We all talk about the amenities that attract us to the Club, but community and connections are the essence of belonging to a Club. I hope your Club experience will be enriched by introducing the Club to your own circle of friends so that we can broaden our own circle of Members here at the Metropolitan Club. We have revived our Meet up at the Met ( formerly named Meet & Mingle) on the last Tuesday of the month. The full schedule is on page nine. Meet up at the Met is a pleasant and special way to meet Members you don’t know and to introduce your prospective Members to the warmth and friendship of the Club. Enjoy our Club,

Where to in 2022? February is the second month of the calendar year, but it is not too late to figure out a roadmap to take you to the finish line. Here at the Metropolitan Club we can approach it in different ways, there are two and a half quarters left to complete our fiscal years and ten more months to the end of 2022. So why not think of the opportunities that can still arise and make things happen! As a leader, it is my job to think of a brighter future for the staff and for the club. As I am writing this article, I am reflecting on the opportunities I have be given in the past month. I have spent time with peers and two incredible speakers that made me reflect about two distinct topics: “Climbing the Mountain” and “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” The first topic focused on practices that support not just managers but also individuals in road mapping their journey to success. The pandemic has taught us so many lessons, presenting us with silver linings that should never be forgotten. We need to look at the brighter side of things and lifetime events, even when you are not sure about answers. That’s when positive thinking and your creative hat come in. We need to see wonderful, even during challenging times. This is a good time for clubs. There’s a true value in being a Member or working at the Metropolitan Club. This a place that you find not only privacy, but it is where it makes you feel safe to be in a social circle and interact with old friends and make new ones. On the people side of the equation, there’s so much to be celebrated. We are so blessed to have a team of employees that is diverse in so many ways. It is the richness of each culture with different ways of thinking that makes us who we are as an organization, attracts new Members while keeping existing ones. It creates the feeling of a true “Home Away from Home”. We are all climbing a mountain together with a common goal: to take the Club to the next level. This is your Club, and there is time to get to the finish line. Do not hesitate to reach out to any of us with What, Where, Who and How questions, at the Board of Directors level, committee structure, or management. We are here to Communicate, Listen, Understand, and Believe.

Connecting Over the Holidays

M

y first holiday season at the Club was in 2021. My husband Jack and I attended Christmas in Paris, largely thanks to Susan Hastings suggesting that we shouldn’t miss it. The Dining Room was decorated with fun lighting transporting guests to a fabulous party in France for a few hours (sans the flight). Meeting new friends and learning more about them over dinner was a highlight. It turned out that everyone at our Paris dinner table had a Barcelona story! I love that the more we connect with each other, the more similarities we discover. Kristen Butenhoff kindly invited many of us newer Members, along with not-so-new Members, to one of the holiday luncheons. Kristen and her

band of elves decorated a long table with garland, little gifts, 3-D glasses that revealed Santa and Xmas trees in hidden spots, and holiday crackers filled with surprises (mine had a tiny silver yoyo in it). The lunch was a wonderful way to connect and a fun example of what happens when we send or –accept– an invitation! Another highlight to the season was attending the Nutcracker. Laurelly Dale let a few of us know her family’s history of attending the Nutcracker in Canada and she arranged dinner at North Box at the Opera House before the performance. It was a perfect opportunity to dress up with our masks and umbrellas and wonderful to see the dancers and audience exude gratitude for a night out! What I love about our Club is that anything goes. Any idea, trip, game, recipe, or whimsy a Member has can be shared and embraced and encouraged. How wonderful to have a fabulous Home Away From Home where we can support each other while having so much fun! Thank you for the warm welcome!

New Members THANK YOU & WELCOME

This month, we extend a warm welcome to four new Members. We hope that when visiting the Club, you’ll take a moment to greet new Members, introduce yourself to those that you don’t already know, and welcome all Members and guests to our Home Away From Home.

Patricia (Pat) Dodson

Irene Holmes

SPONSOR: MERRILL RANDOL

SPONSOR: KAKI DESAUTELS

Pat grew up in Los Angeles and began her career as a social worker after getting her master's degree from the University of San Diego and her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. She later became active in political policy and advocacy, first in Washington, then in San Francisco, where she has lived for the past 30 years with her husband, Gerald. She participates in several SF Bay Area philanthropic organizations, including one that helps foster children. She also has a strong interest in learning new things and has taught herself conversational Spanish. Pat has been to the Club as a guest on various occasions over the years and now, as a Member, hopes to attend lectures, participate in book clubs, and maybe even the Spanish conversation group.

Irene and her husband, Oliver (Lock), are long-time San Francisco residents and are excited about being able to entertain their children and grandchildren at the Club. Irene is also looking forward to swimming, exercise, book groups, and brushing up on her bridge game. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and practiced law for 10 years, working for the US Justice Department and the US Attorney’s Office in San Francisco. She has been active in youth services and children's theater, and, as a former musician, supports the San Francisco Symphony. She and Lock enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, and they are now looking forward to new adventures at the Club.

Andrea Gargiulo

Carolyn Kolling Selig

SPONSOR: KRISTIN BUTENHOFF

SPONSOR: EVE WERTSCH

Andrea’s main residence is in Boston, but she spends the winters at her home on Telegraph Hill. From there, she visits with family and is looking forward to meeting new friends at the Metropolitan Club. She has a fascinating background in law, politics, theater, and entertainment. She is a graduate of Smith College, and she holds a law degree from Suffolk University Law School. Andrea is a life-long learner who helped found the Beacon Hill Seminars and is also a participant in the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement. Andrea looks forward to dining with friends – both old and new – and enjoying the fitness facilities, lectures, and events.

A San Francisco native, Carolyn hopes to make new friends and extend her ties to the community as a Club Member. She is a UCLA graduate and a partner at Deloitte & Touche in Talent and Audit, where she works to champion the role of women in the organization. She is passionate about San Francisco history, culture, and diversity and the place the Club plays in that history. She and her husband, Michael, have two young sons and the Club holds a special place in their hearts as they were married here 14 years ago. In 2017, Carolyn started a 501c3 preschool in her neighborhood to ensure affordable tuition for families and continues to serve as its CFO. She looks forward to building a community of strong, supportive women, actively engaging in athletics, social and volunteer activities.

Getting to Know You New Members and their sponsors are always invited to a “Getting to Know You (GTKY)” event hosted by the Membership Engagement Committee. All Members are welcome to join in the fun and make new Members feel welcome. Upcoming GTKY events are scheduled for

Dining Room Captain

Maintenance Supervisor

Please submit your questions early to marcomm@metropolitanclubsf.org

We wish Luz Reyes and Bick Velasco a Happy Retirement. Luz was hired by the Metropolitan Club on October 2nd, 1984 and worked tirelessly for 37 years, initially as a food server, and ultimately as a Food Captain. Luz knows and will always remember every Member by their name, favorite dishes, favorite seats and has always taken ownership of everything she has done for the Club. She didn’t know the meaning of the word “no”. She helped in any area of the front of the house operations, greeting, serving, bussing tables and bartending. The club and the Members have always come first!

Bick was first hired by the Club on June 6th, 1987 as a part-time bellman, and after two years became a full-time employee as our building maintenance supervisor for the last 33 years. He knows every single corner of this grand Dame, and without the blink of an eye he would detect what the issue was, and had the right answer or knew the right contractor to contact. Bick is also a great carpenter and has either built or refurbished many pieces in the clubhouse. His famous saying: “No problem!” regardless of the situation.

Both Luz and Bick worked so hard for so many years with dedication and love, always giving 100% of themselves each day.

We will miss them immensely.

F E ATUR E A RT ICLE

A HEALTHY HEART LIVES IN A HEALTHY BODY. Cardiac or heart muscle is a special arrangement of fibers, distinguished from the skeletal or smooth muscle fibers in other areas of the body. This ‘‘syncytial’’ arrangement enables the heart to contract rhythmically to force blood from the veins to the arteries.

This healthy beating of your heart is, of course, involuntary. But what can you do—voluntarily—to keep your cardiac muscle healthy? According to Jennifer Turpin Stanfield in ACE magazine, there are 10 ways exercise helps to protect your heart.

It’s your heart, don’t break it! different ways exercise keeps the heart healthy: 1. Lowers blood pressure 2. Lowers ‘‘bad’’ cholesterol 3. Raises ‘‘good’’ cholesterol 4. Strengthens the heart muscle 5. Helps to maintain a healthy weight 6. Improves the body’s ability to use oxygen 7. Decreases and stabilizes the recovery time to return to normal heart rate after exercise 8. Reduces risk of type II diabetes 9. Makes you feel happier 10. Lowers mental stress

Simple exercise such as walking or running every other day for 30 minutes on the treadmill, taking an aquafit class, using the Mirror, the elliptical machine, the Peloton, or joining the walking group…these are all readily available ways to exercise at the Club.

Make your entire exercise experience at the Club count! Don’t you notice that you feel better when you exercise? Once you begin to make exercise a part of your healthy lifestyle, you will take the stairs rather than the elevator when possible, wear a fitness tracker of some type to quantify your activity level, watch your caloric intake and make healthy meal choices.

One Member told me that, during the COVID pandemic, she took the Strength & Sculpt class via Zoom, which included at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. Her cholesterol dropped from 240 to 192. The only difference she could recall in her lifestyle during the pandemic year was the aerobic exercise she did during this class. She had taken a Strength & Sculpt class previously with another instructor who did not include very much aerobic exercise. Her physician confirmed that aerobic exercise is one of the key factors in heart health.

A healthy heart goes hand-in-hand with a healthy body. It is by Laura Sachs your heart, don’t break it! FEBRUARY 2022 • Metropolitan Club Arrow • PAGE 13

F IT NE SS

is easy and fun!

This fast growing paddle sport is for all skill levels and ages. With relatively simple rules, the game is easy for beginners to learn and, with experience, can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game. A pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court (yellow lines on our tennis court), with a slightly shorter net. There is both single and doubles play. The whiffle ball is hit with a paddle after a bounce or without a bounce (volley). It is really fun to play!

The rules are simple to follow and you can have fun playing after just one session: SCORING: Points are scored only by the serving team. Games are normally played to 11 points, but you must win by at least 2 points. So if the score reaches 10-10, keep playing until one team has 2 more points than the other (12-10, 13-11, etc). SERVE: The serve is made underhand from behind the baseline and diagonally across the court. A player continues serving until a fault. Both players on the serving doubles team have the opportunity to serve and score points until the team commits a fault (except for the first service of a new game).

PAGE 14 • Metropolitan Club Arrow • FEBRUARY 2022

DOUBLE-BOUNCE RULE: When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning it, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces to start every point. NON-VOLLEY ZONE: The area within seven feet of both sides of the net is commonly referred to as the “kitchen.” A player cannot step into or fall into the kitchen when volleying the ball. A player can go into the kitchen when not volleying (to hit a ball after it bounces). FAULT: When: 1) the serve does not land in the receiving crosscourt; 2) the ball is hit into the net or out of bounds; 3) the ball bounces twice on one side; 4) the ball is volleyed in the kitchen. A fault by the receiving team results in a point for the serving team. A fault by the serving team results in the server’s loss of serve.
