CDA defines essential copper role The U.S. Copper Development Association issued a notice on 23 March on the usefulness of copper alloys in the battle against coronavirus. The notice asked that local, state and federal governments ensure that copper industry operations and employees are designated as ‘essential’ and not included in any ‘shelter in place’ or similar orders. Copper alloys are needed to produce oxygen regulators for medical applications and hospitals as well as machined components for other medical equipment including ventilators.

IWCC echoes vital nature of copper sector A similar Position Paper was issued by the IWCC at the start of April, noting that copper is essential to the economy, needed for the generation and distribution of electricity to homes, shops and industry, for example. The copper processing industry is a low-risk workplace for the spread of COVID-19. The copper semis industry has highly efficient manufacturing processes and relatively low numbers of production workers are employed
in the workplace. Therefore, existing working practices in semis plants means that social distancing is easily implemented and enforced in the workplace. Copper plants should continue to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure essential services continue uninterrupted. Ports, borders and other transport infrastructure should be kept open for essential industrial deliveries, including copper products.
