Deriving from the smallest unit, A Remindeer imagines a sharp silhouette that cuts the clear night sky of Winnipeg. The structure is briefly enveloped with moon gazing eyes reimagined architecturally as panels, inspired by the sunflowers following the sun. Built using lightweight
custom cut cross laminated timber faces and cross lap joints for the wooden frame, the structure comes together with no skilled labour required. The eyes look up at the moon and take the moonlight in to create a dreamlike experience. The tilt allows for natural airflow and
redirects the wind, acting as a chimney and its tilted form connects back to the native Tipis, and the moonlight experience acts as a reminder of the earlier times with the rituals – when the native people used to look up to the sun and moon.
The pertruding panels that wrap the whole structure are the keystone of this design. The CLT panels were imagined as eyes looking up to the sky, and taking in the moonlight, thus the name, Moon Gazers. The white finish on the structure binds it with the environment of the silky soft snow, develops the structure as a continuation of the landscape, letting it blend into the panaroma of the frozen river. The river, who is now a public square, takes the structure into its ecosystem.
The site is located in the Nestaweya River Trail at the Forks located on the Assiniboine and Red rivers in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Forks is located in downtown Winnipeg, at the junction of the Red River and the Assiniboine River. The intersection of the two rivers historically has made the area a popular meeting place for over 6,000 years. In recent times, the site has developed into a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, with over four million visitors annually.
