PROJECT STATEMENT
Deriving from the smallest unit, A Remindeer imagines a sharp silhouette that cuts the clear night sky of Winnipeg. The structure is briefly enveloped with moon gazing eyes reimagined architecturally as panels, inspired by the sunflowers following the sun. Built using lightweight
custom cut cross laminated timber faces and cross lap joints for the wooden frame, the structure comes together with no skilled labour required.
The eyes look up at the moon and take the moonlight in to create a dreamlike experience. The tilt allows for natural airflow and
redirects the wind, acting as a chimney and its tilted form connects back to the native Tipis, and the moonlight experience acts as a reminder of the earlier times with the rituals – when the native people used to look up to the sun and moon.
INITIAL SKETCHES
PLACE IN THE CITYMOON GAZERS
The pertruding panels that wrap the whole structure are the keystone of this design. The CLT panels were imagined as eyes looking up to the sky, and taking in the moonlight, thus the name, Moon Gazers. The white finish on the structure binds it with the environment of the silky soft snow, develops the structure as a continuation of the landscape, letting it blend into the panaroma of the frozen river. The river, who is now a public square, takes the structure into its ecosystem.
The site is located in the Nestaweya River Trail at the Forks located on the Assiniboine and Red rivers in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Forks is located in downtown Winnipeg, at the junction of the Red River and the Assiniboine River. The intersection of the two rivers historically has made the area a popular meeting place for over 6,000 years.
In recent times, the site has developed into a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, with over four million visitors annually.
MAIN STRUCTURE DETAIL
ACADEMIC & ADMINISTRATION
The first two floors were appointed to the academician rooms and conference rooms while the ground floor was left untouched for ticketing and the entrance to the recital hall. The entrance to the academics & administration area is accessed through the circulation core in the landscape. The circulation cores allow for a clear and easy navigation.
EXPLORATION
The classrooms are located in the horizontal block, on floors 2 and 3. Classrooms face the gallery on the 3rd floor while on the 2nd floor there is a large open space for students and academicians. The recording studios and laboratories are located in the far end of the block, and can be easily accessed from the circulation core located in the ground floor.
MUSIC PERFORMANCE
The recital hall and the foyer are accessed directly from the ground floor, with the foyer spreading into the landscape, under the colonnade. This way, the ground floor is reserved for public visitors. The rehearsal halls are kept in the tower’s layers, each layer containing one hall, and its classrooms. The halls can be accessed from the circulation core.
MUSIC EXPERIENCE
The library is located in the ground floor, right in front of the foyer and can be accessed publicly. The exhibition hall is located in the ground floor, behind the ticket booths and the foyer, inside the building. This way, the visitors can enter the foyer and explore the exhibition hall if they please. The entrances are kept on the ground floor for easy access.
