& RECREATION

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Exciting things are happening in Merriam! We’re thrilled to start the process of a new public art installation at the Merriam Community Center campus. Nearly 200 artists applied for the project, and the Public Art Committee has narrowed it down to the top three artists. The completed project will join a growing list of public art across Merriam, and we hope it will inspire you to explore our City’s vibrant art scene. Learn more on page 10.

Mark your calendars for the Merriam Turkey Creek Festival on May 17 at Antioch Park. Whether you’re a longtime attendee or planning to visit for the first time, this year’s festival promises fun for all ages. From local food vendors and craft booths to live entertainment and family-friendly activities, it’s a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate everything that makes Merriam such a great place to live and play.

We’ve received bids for the City’s single trash hauler program. This initiative is designed to simplify trash, recycling, and yard waste services for our residents by providing reliable service and lower rates. We're currently reviewing the bids and will share more details soon. Your feedback and support have been invaluable as we move forward with this project, and we appreciate your patience as we work through the next steps.

As always, thank you for being such an integral part of our Merriam community. We’re excited to continue working together to make our City even better. We have loads of fun planned this year as we celebrate our 75th birthday. Mark Oct. 23 on your calendar for a blowout bash. I hope to see you there!

Summer Codes to Know

It’s time to spruce up your home property! Here are a few tips to stay code-compliant this summer:

▶ Trim grass and weeds so they’re below 10 inches in height. Make sure grass clippings don’t end up on the street or in storm drains as this can cause drainage issues and pollute our streams.

▶ Store trash and recycling containers behind your home’s front building line.

▶ Keep your vehicles in working condition and have a current license plate attached.

▶ Park boats, campers, and trailers behind the front building line and on a hard surface.

Learn about the City's 10 Codes to Know at merriam.org/10codes.

New Flags on Display in June

Look for Pride and Juneteenth flags at City Hall this June. They’re the first two flags on display as part of the City Council’s newly adopted City Flag Display Policy. As part of this policy, the City Council may annually request flags to be placed at Merriam Municipal Plaza for the following year.

Merriam Wins Three State Parks & Recreation Awards

Merriam recently received three state awards from the Kansas Recreation and Park Association.

Merriam Parks and Recreation Director Anna Slocum received the 2025 Administration Branch Leadership Award. She has served our community since 2012.

“Our Parks and Recreation Department staff is committed to Merriam residents and Merriam Community Center patrons, and we’re always looking at ways to improve on or add new events and programs to better our city and community,” Slocum said. “This award is a testament to our hard work, and I’m proud to lead such an amazing team.”

Mayor Bob Pape received the 2025 Distinguished Elected Official award for his overall support of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, including volunteering and attending events throughout the year.

“I’m honored to receive this award,” Pape said. “I can’t stress how important it

is to recognize the important work our Parks and Recreation staff offers our community, including fun programs and events and safe and sustainable facilities. That, in turn, offers a great quality of life for our residents while building community.”

The Merriam Parks and Recreation Department also received an award for Outstanding Recreation Program for its Taylor Swift Super Pop-Up Bash before last year’s Super Bowl.

EXPLORE PUBLIC ART IN MERRIAM

From a butterfly resting atop a cairn at Waterfall Park to the stunning, mirrorpolished seeds at Merriam Marketplace, public art in Merriam offers something unique for everyone to appreciate!

The City began investing in public art in 2014 when Merriam's City Council approved funding $500,000 over five years. The first sculpture, Still Time, was installed in 2016 at the intersection of Johnson and Merriam drives, with other notable works like Planting the Seeds, Hmmm…, and Bask following at various locations.

Based on feedback from a community survey, it was clear that many residents supported funding public art. With these results in mind, the City Council made public art a priority, aiming to foster community connection, build a unique identity, transform public spaces, and further beautify Merriam while sparking pride in our community. In 2023, the City Council renewed its commitment to public art with a $550,000 investment over five years.

Creating a Public Art Master Plan

After the City Council voted to fund public art, the Public Art Committee reengaged in 2023 and started developing a comprehensive Public Art Master Plan. The goal of the plan was to capture the community’s future vision of public art in Merriam and help guide decisions on new installations across the City.

The committee, which includes residents, two City Councilmembers, and City staff, teamed up with a consultant to gather community feedback. The consultant conducted over 20 interviews, held an open house, and surveyed more than 350 community members.

“The plan was created with a ton of input from the community, so we have a lot of insights into what the community would like to see,” said Lauren Krivoshia, the staff liaison to the Public Art Committee. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive of the arts.”

The City Council accepted the final master plan in early 2024.

What's Coming Next?

The Public Art Committee recently reviewed nearly 200 artist applications for a new project at the Merriam Community Center campus.

“Artists submit portfolios, and we review their work and artist statements,” Krivoshia said. “We narrow it down to three finalists, and then they’re given a stipend to create a site-specific proposal for the committee to review.”

The campus project is down to three finalists: Cara Lynch, Milagros Collective, and Beth Ravitz. Each artist will submit ideas for permanent installations in the parking structure's interior stairwell or exterior stairs.

For future projects, Krivoshia said the committee will work together to select the best locations, goals, and themes for each piece. Committee members will also explore other ways to expand engaging art experiences in the community.

"Public art builds vibrant communities, both socially and economically, and has a lasting impact," Krivoshia said.

With more than a dozen art installations across the City, including sculptures, murals, and interactive pieces, Merriam's art scene is thriving!

Staff Q&A

Lauren Krivoshia, Assistant to the City Administrator

Lauren Krivoshia is a Lawrence native who started in Merriam as its first in-house graphic designer. After she received her master’s degree in user experience design from the University of Kansas, Lauren switched roles to the assistant to the city administrator. When she’s not working, you’ll find Lauren spoiling her toy poodle, Ladidadi, or renovating her 1930s home and yard.

What do you do for your job?

My job is an odd mix! In addition to managing the Public Art Committee, I’m also responsible for administering our website, planning employee engagement programs, and other special projects as they come up.

How has your career changed in Merriam? I started as the City’s first graphic designer, which helped me learn a lot about all of our departments. I was asked to be on a team to establish our core values and to lead our website overhaul, which eventually led to this new position.

What does the Public Art Committee do?

The committee provides direction and recommends new public art projects to the City Council to help build Merriam’s character. They strive to engage the community in new, interesting ways that enhance the quality of life with a sense of whimsy and awe.

What do you like about working for the City?

The people! We have a great, fun, and relaxed culture filled with people who love to get things done. I love that we’re small enough to know everybody.

PUBLIC ART IN MERRIAM

The City of Merriam purchased a sculpture from the Parade of Hearts collection titled My Heart Resides in Strawberry Hill, which now has a permanent home at Merriam Marketplace. COMMUNITY Q&A

DIERK VAN KEPPEL

Glass Artist

Since 1982, artist Dierk Van Keppel has used modern glass fusion concepts to create patterns inspired by nature. He’s had nationwide exhibitions and worldwide commissions and has worked with renowned artists, including Dale Chihuly. In addition to fine art glass works, Dierk creates lamps, vessels, bowls, castings, and fusings in his studio at Rock Cottage Glassworks in Merriam, where he’s worked since 1991.

How did you get started in glass art? I started blowing glass at the University of Kansas in 1982. In my first semester, famous glass artist Dale Chihuly came to the university and demonstrated the craft. What do you like about it?

I like conceptualizing and dreaming about the glass process and what I want to make – then, having the learned ability to let my muscle memory make it.

What makes each glass artwork so unique? When I hand-blow glass, I have a concept in my mind, but I’m free to follow spontaneous ideas. When I mould-blow glass, I follow a very specific process to make the glass all the same.

What’s your favorite piece that you’ve created?

I don’t have a single favorite, but many of my public commission projects are for hospitals. I love hearing from patients and their families that the art brought a sense of peace and well-being.

What do you think about public art in Merriam?

I have always thought art is subject to “the eyes of the beholder.” Most pieces in the collection I like very much, some not as much. I think it’s great that Merriam enriches its city with public art. One of my favorites is the Michael Young mural, "Old Merriam," in the Merriam Community Center.

What do you think about the Hearts Across Merriam campaign with the glass hearts you created?

I think the “Hearts Across Merriam” campaign is a a great idea to promote Merriam's 75th birthday.

Hearts Across Merriam

Merriam is small in size, but it's big in heart! To celebrate its 75th birthday, the Public Art Committee is hiding 75 beautiful, customblown glass hearts throughout Merriam. Each month through October, the committee will hide six hearts in various public spaces for you to find. Merriam artist Dierk Van Keppel crafted the glass hearts, each unique and full of character.

You’re encouraged to explore the City’s parks, landmarks, and trails as you hunt for these glass hearts. Once you find a heart, it’s yours to keep! One heart per family, please.

Visit Merriam’s Facebook page @MerriamKansas each month to see where to find a new batch of hearts. Happy hunting!

Police Department Buys New Body Cameras and Video System

Merriam police officers are using new body cameras to help promote transparency during calls for service.

While Merriam police officers have used body cameras for 15 years, the new camera system is more durable and has a longer battery life.

The police department uses body cameras and cameras in their vehicles for many reasons, including gathering evidence, more accountability, and better community relations.

Officers turn on the cameras manually or when the patrol car’s emergency equipment is activated. It’s also paired with an officer’s taser.

The 36 body cameras and 11-car video systems, which include two cameras per vehicle, cost about $339,400.

The department donated their old equipment to four local police agencies to help enhance their operations.

MCC Member Spotlight

Asa and Israel (Izzy) Williams

What do you like about the MCC? Asa and Izzy's favorite thing is the indoor pool. Asa likes going down the yellow slide and the lazy river, and Izzy enjoys the slide. Mama and dad love it as it helps the kids burn off extra energy!

What’s your typical workout routine, and what do you use most at the facility? Izzy’s favorite thing is the swim and dive teams. He loves his Merriam Dolphins and can’t wait to learn some new moves and dives!

How do you spend your time when you’re not at the MCC? The boys like to stay healthy! Asa likes to eat fruits and veggies, and Izzy stays active by participating

in sports. He plays basketball, flag football, running club at school, as well as the swim and dive teams. Asa hasn’t started any sports but is interested in the karate class held at the community center, so we want to try that soon!

Tell us something that might surprise us about your family. Asa wants to be a race car and Amazon driver when he grows up!
