& RECREATION

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Merriam is turning 75 this year, and we want you to be part of the celebration! Join us Thursday, Oct. 23, from 4–8 p.m. at Merriam Marketplace for an evening of fun, food, and community. This free, family-friendly event will feature games, kids activities, food trucks, a beer garden, face painting, birthday cake, and even a special Merriam-inspired ice cream flavor from Betty Rae’s. I hope to see you there as we celebrate our city’s proud history and growing future!

As we look to the City’s future, we want your opinion about downtown Merriam. This area has always been an important part of our community. As your mayor, I'm committed to addressing the flooding issues and creating a downtown that serves our residents and reflects your vision. Check your mailboxes this fall for a community survey about these topics. Your input will help us shape Merriam for generations to come. I encourage you to fill out and submit the survey responses. We look forward to hearing from you. Check out page 5 for more information about this.

As we Move Merriam Forward, we’re also planning ahead for a change in trash services. Starting in November 2026, Merriam residences will move to a single trash hauler. While this transition is still over a year away, we want to keep you informed every step of the way. Visit page 7 to learn what’s in the new contract and where to find a list of frequently asked questions.

I’m proud to share that Merriam Grand Station is nearly complete. Across the street, the City Council recently approved a $102 million mixed-use development called Grand Station Marketplace. I'm excited to share that it includes a grocery store. This is something our community has asked for ever since losing Hen House. Our recent "AAA" bond rating will save Merriam taxpayers thousands of dollars as we move this project forward.

I hope you're as proud of being in Merriam as I am. These exciting activities are helping shape a brighter future for our Just Right city!

Your Mayor, Bob

TUESDAY FRIDAY

Moving Downtown Merriam Forward

Be on the lookout for a community survey in your mailbox this fall. The City would like your input on the future of downtown Merriam.

City leaders are focusing on this area because of recent planning efforts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the floodplain challenges they presented. City leaders are also working with another engineering firm, HNTB Corporation, to investigate different options for getting downtown Merriam out of the floodplain.

Background

Downtown Merriam is located in the floodplain, making it difficult for businesses to obtain insurance and reinvest in their property. In the early 2000s, the City reached out to the USACE on behalf of downtown businesses to research ways to mitigate flood risk and remove them from the floodplain. After years of work, a preliminary study was released in 2015, but funding stalled at the federal level until the Infrastructure Bill was approved by Congress in 2021.

In June 2022, City Councilmembers approved a design agreement with the USACE. The agreement was for the USACE to update the 2015 study and proceed with engineering efforts to get the downtown area out of the FEMA flood zone. That work is ongoing. A more cohesive design plan is expected to be provided to the City and shared with the public in early 2026.

Kerry is a Shawnee Mission North graduate who earned a master’s degree from Baker University. He founded Rigdon 32 years ago with one truck, and it's now a multi-branch company in four cities. The City recently purchased Kerry's property and paid to have his company relocate further up Merriam Drive because it was important to the City Council to help keep small businesses growing in Merriam.

How long has your business been in downtown Merriam? We opened our first shop in downtown Merriam 8 years ago.

When the City approached you about relocating, what was important to you during that process? There was a combination of factors important to us: moving without disrupting our workflow, finding a space that would accommodate our projected growth, and timing the move so our new space could be remodeled before the move.

Why was it important to you to stay in Merriam? Located on the I-35 corridor, Merriam is a perfect fit for Rigdon. Our technicians can easily travel in any direction.

How did the City work with you to make that happen? The City of Merriam made our move easy by granting extra time in our old space and approving key incentives that minimized financial impact. We look forward to many more years of partnership!

What are your hopes for the future of downtown Merriam? Merriam is carving out a unique niche in the Kansas City metro, blending big names like IKEA and car dealerships with locally owned shops and industrial businesses.

What advice would you give other businesses as downtown plans move forward? Get ready for growth! New developments and redeveloped spaces are drawing more attention and traffic. With Merriam’s prime location, the potential is limitless.

CITY NEWS

City Council Approves Grand Station Marketplace Development

Watch for a transformative $102 million mixeduse development – called Grand Station Marketplace – on Shawnee Mission Parkway between Ikea Way and Antioch Road.

In June, the Merriam City Council unanimously approved revitalizing this area, which includes apartments, a restaurant, and a grocery store.

The City Council also approved a redevelopment agreement with Drake Development, created a Community Improvement District at Merriam Grand Station and Grand Station Marketplace, and approved bond ordinances to issue general obligation bonds.

“With Merriam’s recent ‘AAA’ bond rating, we’ll be able to save our residents thousands of dollars when we issue bonds to help fund this development,” City Administrator Chris Engel said. “Grand Station Marketplace, alongside the adjacent Merriam Grand Station, will help create a vibrant community hub for our residents, neighbors, and future generations.”

Edelweiss Neighborhood Celebrates 50 Years

Congratulations to the Edelweiss neighborhood on celebrating its 50th anniversary! Edelweiss was recorded in the Johnson County register of deeds in November 1974, with the first residents moving into the neighborhood in 1975. About 80 residents attended a get together with City Councilmembers Christine Evans Hands and Bruce Kaldahl, who live in Edelweiss. Mayor Bob Pape was on hand to issue a proclamation in the neighborhood’s honor.

Merriam Switching to a Single Trash Hauler

In April, Merriam City Councilmembers voted to pass an ordinance that establishes citywide residential trash, recycling, and yard waste with GFL Environmental Inc., starting Nov. 1, 2026.

The City Council recently voted on the final contract with GFL. Per state statute, there is an 18-month window for residents to allow their current provider contracts to expire before the City's contract takes effect.

What’s in the contract?

All residents and property owners would pay about $24 per month, which includes a small administrative fee. Residents will see this charge on their biannual property tax bill, to pay for city staff support.

The contract also includes:

▶ Weekly trash, recycling, and yard waste (all picked up on the same day)

▶ 65- and 95-gallon bins

▶ Up to 10 bags, bundles, or containers of yard waste per week, with two amnesty weeks

▶ Up to three bulk items each month (collected on the same day)

▶ Garage to curb service for those who qualify

Grant Money Still Available for Home Improvement Projects

There’s still time to work on your house projects this fall! Get financial help with the City’s home improvement grants. You can apply for the Residential Exterior Home Improvement or Sustainability grants and get reimbursed up to $3,000 to help pay for projects, such as:

▶ New deck

▶ New fence

▶ Siding Projects must be completed by Sept. 15.

2026 Budget

The City Council is putting the finishing touches on Merriam’s 2026 budget. Good news for property owners: the mill levy rate is expected to decrease from the 2025 rate, which means a lower tax rate on your property’s annual assessed value. Explore details about the budget and the City’s finances at merriam.org/finance.

YEARS OF MERRIAM

On Oct. 23, 1950, Merriam officially became a thirdclass city, giving residents a formal voice in shaping their community’s future. Its incorporation helped the city move to an emerging suburban hub. At the time, Merriam was a close-knit town surrounded by farmland and growing neighborhoods. Becoming an incorporated city meant Merriam could begin managing its own services, infrastructure, and development – an important step in its progression.

The first City Council meeting was held at Pflumm Brothers Plumbing Shop on Nov. 24, 1950. Carl R. Engel was the first mayor with City Councilmembers Dr. C.A. Brooks, Milton Downing, Larry Owens, Paul Pflumm, and Glenn Rushton.

The City Councilmembers were designated law enforcement officials, with each carrying a police badge, and Carl Looper was appointed as town marshal. Other services included volunteer firefighters, with Paul Pflumm serving as the first volunteer fire chief.

That same year, the City adopted its first ordinances, including setting the official speed limit at 25 miles per hour – and began laying the groundwork for what would become the services residents rely on today: public safety, road maintenance, and parks.

Now, 75 years later, Merriam is home to over 11,000 residents and continues to grow while holding on to its small-town charm. The transformation from a railroad stop to a thriving,

inclusive city showcases its progression, perseverance, and community spirit.

Whether you're a longtime resident, a business owner, or new to the community, Merriam’s 75th birthday on Oct. 23, 2025, is a time to celebrate the past and look ahead to the future we’re building together. This birthday is a tribute to the City’s journey and the generations who built Merriam into what it is today.

Merriam in 1950 Incorporation:

Merriam officially incorporated as a city of the third class on Oct. 23, 1950. This allowed for the establishment of a local government and city services.

City Services: New services included police protection, street maintenance, public health supervision, a swimming pool, and a volunteer fire department.

City Hall:

The first city hall was located at the corner of 58th and Kessler streets.

Leadership:

The first City Council meeting was held on Nov. 24, 1950, with Carl R. Engel as the first mayor.

Population: 1,640 residents

Subsequent Growth:

Merriam's growth continued, and, in 1957, it transitioned to a city of the second class, with a population of 4,327.

REFLECTING ON 75 YEARS

Mark Buehler turns 75 years old exactly one month after the City of Merriam hits its diamond jubilee milestone. Mark moved to Merriam in 1978 and worked at Hendrick Chevrolet for 21 years before retiring. He and his wife, Julie, raised their three daughters in our Just Right city.

What was Merriam like in 1978 when you first moved here?

It was quieter. We had a lot of bars back then. There was a little grocery store that I used to go in and slice off some bologna. There was no housing over where the Town Center is now. I saw all of that evolve – watched things get bigger. I was the young kid on the block when I moved in, now I’m the old man.

What has your experience been like living in Merriam?

You know, it’s been great. I really can’t complain. The City takes care of us. They've got street sweepers, tree trimming – everything. They keep Merriam looking good. Honestly, I'm impressed with how the City runs things. The services, parks, and events – it’s a well-oiled machine.

Would you say Merriam was a good place to raise your family?

The schools were good, the kids learned a lot, and it’s diverse. When they tore down the original Crestview Elementary, I saved bricks from the building for my daughters.

What do you think about some of the City’s recent developments?

There’s always a trade-off. More development means more traffic, but that's progress. I went down to the new lofts recently. I’ve seen that area change so many times, from Kmart, Milgram's, and Sears. Now, we had breakfast at HomeGrown, walked around, and saw the artwork. That’s a good improvement.

Merriam is turning 75 this year. What comes to mind when you hear that?

I just hope it feels better than me! But really, they’ve come a long way, and I think they’re headed in the right direction.

How do you feel about turning 75?

I guess turning 75 means I'm only five years away from 80! It’s a milestone. Things start slowing down when you hit 70, and I worked up until I was 68 doing body work with lots of bending and lifting. That’s why I still come to the community center every day.

When you think of Merriam, what comes to mind?

I’m really happy with the City of Merriam. They’ve always treated their residents well. I’m still here, so that says something. I recommend it to anyone as it's still affordable. It's one of the best cities to live in.

What keeps you busy these days?

I’m big into cars and all the stuff that comes with that. The second Cruise Night is coming up, so I’ll be around for that. I’m happy here.

Anna

Anna Bermudez moved to Merriam and into the new Merriam Grand Station

Lofts at the end of 2024, but she’s lived in Johnson County since 1999 and is a Merriam Community Center member. Anna’s turning 75 years old in September and has watched the area grow over the years.

What was the Johnson County area like when you first moved here?

It was smaller, quieter. There were fewer big businesses, and it felt more like a small town. But, what stood out even then was how friendly people were. You’d go for a walk and everyone would say hello. It was – and still is – a very welcoming place.

What made you want to move to Merriam?

I decided to move somewhere quieter and more suburban, and Merriam just felt right.

How have you seen Merriam change over the years?

It’s grown a lot. We’ve got more community programs, better parks, and the new community center. There’s more diversity now, which I love. Merriam has done a great job of keeping that small-town feel while growing and improving.

What Merriam programs or events have you participated in over the years?

I used to go to the old Irene B. French Community Center all the time for exercise classes and art programs. Now, I’m getting ready to teach dance at Merriam Grand Station. I’ve also gone to some of the summer concerts in the park. It’s a very active community.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time in Merriam?

I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I really like all the new changes like the Grand Station Lofts, new community center and pools, dance classes, and indoor walking track.

A lot of people I used to know have passed away, so I stopped going for a while. But, now I’ve come back and met a new group.

What comes to mind when you hear the ‘City of Merriam’?

It used to feel like a small, quiet town, but now it feels like a modern, upand-coming city. There’s a grocery store coming, more places to eat – it’s all very exciting.

What does it mean to you to be in Merriam as it celebrates its 75th anniversary?

Honestly, it makes me think I’m getting old, too! But, it makes me feel proud to be part of something that has history and heart. I may not have been here all 75 years, but I’ve watched it grow and become more vibrant. It’s a great place to live.

How do you feel about turning 75 years old?

It's three-quarters of a century, but I feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been! I’m healthier than I was 25 years ago. I’ve lost weight, feel energetic, and even teach dance part-time.

MCC Member Spotlight

Tammy & Tom Truex

What do you like about the MCC?

I like the friendly staff, clean and wellkept environment, and convenient hours. There's plenty of parking, and it's close to home. It's a great place to meet and interact with friendly people who work out.

What’s your typical workout routine, and what do you use most at the facility? Tammy spends 30 minutes walking the track and then uses arm and leg weight machines four to five days a week. I usually walk about a mile on the track, some yoga for my back, and light 'old man' weight work.

How do you spend your time when you’re not at the MCC? Tammy volunteers at a women’s philanthropy group and at church. I love going to the theater, the symphony, and eating out. I’m a railroad fan. I also enjoy working outside and listening to music.

Tell us something that might surprise us about your family. Tammy is going on a mission trip to Africa this summer, but I said ‘no way’ to going.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do? We have already traveled a lot, so we would fund our grandchildren’s education and give the rest away.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Read and then have an involuntary nap.
