ALL FOR THE LOVE OF MERCY Dear Merion Mercy Community, In my first-year journey as Head of School, I have been blessed by the Mercy spirit, now, my guide and my inspiration. This robust spirit of Mercy lives inside and outside the walls of our school, witnessed by each of you—our students and their families, alumnae families, our faculty and staff, and our cherished alumnae. You lit up my path with grace, courage, and determination in the face of anxiety and uncertainty. Our challenges were great, but our resilience was greater.

Now, we are stronger than ever because your support has been more abundant than ever before. Through the course of this spring and summer, we heard from many current Merion families who faced harsh new financial realities because of the economic fallout of the COVID-19 crisis. Merion Mercy has always prioritized the financial need of our families, with a significant portion of our budget going directly to student financial aid each year. This year, the needs were far greater than ever.

As one of our girls recently wrote, “The Latin word for mercy is misericordia, meaning ‘a suffering heart.’ To show mercy is to have...empathy for others...in their hardships.” That is exactly what you did. You showed up in the true spirit of Mercy. Our goal was clear: We did not want to lose a single Merion girl. And, we met that goal. Because of you, we were able to help everyone in need, providing families the necessary resources to allow their daughters to return to MMA. Each of us cherish this journey of Mercy. Mine began when I proudly opened our doors last September and first heard sounds unique to Merion: The laughter and learning resonating in our building. The halls that came alive with the “Sound of Music” at our annual Sip ’n Bid, when more than 370 of us joined together to raise $170,000 in support of students, faculty and staff. The dulcet joy of Carol Night. Our Fashion Show celebrating “The World Awaits.” We had no idea of how prescient that theme would be.

Through it all, I learned our love of Mercy is a unifying force, bringing us together as a community, through our faith, our compassion, and our commitment to others. I am grateful for your enduring support and commitment to Merion Mercy Academy. Please know that we hold you and our entire Merion Mercy family in our hearts, and we pray for your health and safety.

I am in awe of the Merion Mercy community. By focusing on the mission of the school and mercy values, MMA’s faculty, staff, students, families, trustees and donors have responded to these extraordinary times with grace and resilience.

Merion Mercy’s donors such as you provided unprecedented financial support to the school and many of its families despite economic turbulence and uncertainty. Most importantly, your support ensured every student could return to school. On behalf of the entire community, I thank you for your generosity and commitment to MMA. I am also grateful for our Head of School, Laura Farrell. Laura’s leadership is grounded in MMA’s mission and Mercy values. She approaches every decision by asking “What’s best for our students?” I have rarely encountered a person as committed as Laura to their responsibilities. She and her team have achieved much during her first year as Head of School building upon MMA’s strong foundation. Laura and team implemented a new, integrated education management system, MyMMA; expanded the Academic Board; broadened and reinvigorated the Student Support Team adding referral capacity; created and successfully recruited the new Director of Innovation, Teaching and Learning. She has also developed our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Plan for Action and much more. Laura works to have relationships with the students, faculty, and staff, sharing her natural warmth and sincere appreciation for their talents and dedication. We are certainly blessed to have her lead our school.

Our faculty is our greatest asset. They care deeply about each student as they bring their enormous powers to inspire and instruct. Never before has this been more evident than through these months of the virus as they taught classes in multiple, simultaneous environments, mastered complex delivery systems, and demonstrated technological expertise. Our teachers do all of this while wearing masks, moving between multiple class settings, and exhibiting good humor. They are our heroes.

Further, I am exceedingly grateful to my fellow members of the Board of Trustees for their strategic guidance of Merion Mercy and for their commitment to our mission during this demanding year.

With this winning combination of a community of support, great leadership, a highly talented faculty, and a truly committed Board, how could we do anything but prevail against the challenges of today’s world? The answer lies in the power of the Mercy spirit, the very core of our school community. As Catherine McAuley said, “Let us be shining lamps, giving light to all around us.” Indeed, Merion Mercy shines brightly.

Revenue for Merion Mercy Academy is largely based on tuition. And while tuition is vital, we are deeply committed to remaining accessible and affordable to all students in need, regardless of economic circumstances. Approximately 60% of our students receive some sort of financial assistance. Close to $2 million in scholarships, both merit and need-based, were awarded during the 2019-2020 academic year. Providing this level of support helps MMA to create a dynamic student body from a variety of backgrounds, which further strengthens the MMA experience.

Merion Mercy hosted the school’s 43rd Sip ’n Bid dinner and auction on November 16, 2019. The halls of Merion were alive with “The Sound of Music,” as our community came together to celebrate our “favorite things.”

Our 370 guests in attendance included parents, parents of alumnae, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends. As one of our successful events, Sip ’n Bid raised $170,000 for Merion Mercy.

For the first time at our auction, we featured live music in the form of a delightful vocal performance provided by our students as well as a deejay, who added to the festivities. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and silent auction preceded a catered dinner and the always exciting loud auction. Guests bid on countless gift certificates and dining experiences, vacations, golf packages, professional sports tickets, and many one-of-a-kind gifts, such as a captain’s chair engraved and embossed with the Seal of Merion Mercy Academy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our event chairs, Michael and Johanna Folgia, the many individuals who donated auction items, as well as the enthusiastic bidders for each item, who all ensured our success. Our annual Sip ’n Bid is truly an event our entire community looks forward to every year. Ann Scattergood McDevitt ’55, P’78, GP’10 a “My life goals are guided by the Winston Churchill quote, ‘We make a life by what we give.’ The Sisters of Mercy educated me for twelve years some 65 years ago. During all that time, I have tried to ‘give back’ some of that beautiful education in many different ways. Most recently, I have been volunteering with Hope Partnership for Education, led by the Sisters of Mercy in North Philadelphia, serving as a Social Studies teacher for the past eight years.

As the Coronavirus has disrupted classroom learning, Hope continues to pioneer new ways. The Sisters gave me the freedom to envision a new way to reach our adult students ’virtually.’ I’m now Zooming PowerPoint presentations. Just like the little engine that could, my Mercy education keeps on giving.

When the appeal came from MMA to help current students whose tuition was problematic because of COVID-19, I was happy to help. Because I teach adults in North Philly who are struggling like some Merion families, it was important to me to make sure that those students were able to continue their education.

It’s just another way for me to give to those who want so much to learn. It’s the Mercy way.”

This past fiscal year, 18 Pennsylvania businesses and individuals made generous gifts to MMA through these tax credit programs, amounting to $253,330 to support scholarships and financial aid. These donors were able to receive substantial tax credits while redirecting those tax dollars to provide needed funding for deserving Merion Mercy students. Adam Hepp P’95,’98, GP’24 “Through our family business, Suburban Wholesale Lighting, Inc., we have participated in the Pennsylvania EITC tax credit program since learning about it in 2012. This program enables us to make contributions to Merion, where we have a very personal connection. Our daughters, Maggie Hepp Oliver ’95 and Jessie Hepp Kraus ’98, each had such an enriching experience at Merion, and the EITC program is a great opportunity to help ensure that this outstanding education is possible to more students, especially those for whom it would be financially difficult without some assistance.

The EITC program is an almost-too-good-to-be-true initiative: Businesses or individuals receive an 75% PA state tax credit for a one-year commitment or a 90% PA tax credit for a two-year commitment. The process is completed through a very simple online application. The out-of-pocket cost is almost nothing while the benefits are substantial for the Merion Mercy students who receive them.

For our family, this is a feel-good opportunity, not only to pay it back, but to pay it forward. Our granddaughter Emily Oliver ’24 just started her freshman year at Merion, and her younger sister, Bridget, as well as her cousins, Caitlin, Emma, Gwen and Hailey are likely to follow. We are committed to helping ensure that MMA thrives and this outstanding educational opportunity is available to as many families as possible.”

Maguire Scholars Program This program is funded by the Maguire Foundation and is awarded to students with strong academic achievement and with great financial need. The following funds are a source of scholarship and financial aid without any scholarship designation, endowed or otherwise.

Merion Mercy Academy General Scholarship Fund This long-standing scholarship fund provides financial aid to incoming students who are nominated by their school principal. Students are awarded these funds based on outstanding leadership, service to others, academics and strong character. These scholarships are offered to students at every Mercy elementary school in the region, and to other schools at large, including any regional public or private school.

The Maguire Foundation Bernadette Milani Sweeney ’78 STEM Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2019 by Joseph Sweeney, Jr. in memory of his wife Bernadette Milani Sweeney ’78, who died in April of 2019. This award is given as financial aid to a student with a specific interest in pursuing STEM at Merion and possibly after graduation. This year, the following individuals contributed to this scholarship.

The following scholarships are also included under the umbrella of MMA General Scholarship Fund: The Josephine Bakhita Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was named for Saint Josephine Bakhita, who was born in the later part of the 19th century in what is now Sudan and later entered religious life. The Bakhita scholarship is awarded to students of color with great financial need who would not be able to attend Merion otherwise. This scholarship was funded this year by the following donor.

The Howley Foundation The Howley Foundation is focused on supporting, expanding, and creating high-quality educational opportunities for students of limited economic means. Education is one of the most important elements to improve equality, to escape the cycle of poverty, and to provide upward social and economic mobility. We believe that character formation is an important part of education. At Merion Mercy, we see impressive outreach to city students, especially with MMA’s geographic accessibility to Philadelphia.

Further, the Merion students we have supported have been successful, demonstrating impressive college placements and high school retention rates.

We know that students we sponsor are receiving a quality academic and moral education that will set them up for success in their lives. In addition, three members of the Howley family are Merion Mercy alumnae: Beth Howley Krieger ’75, Mary Anne Howley Keith ‘84, and Kathy Howley Charmella ’82.

Dr. Henry Bender, P’96 a “Merion Mercy is a place that my wife and I revered.

My late wife, Jane, remembered the time when our daughter, Katherine ’96, attended Merion as ’the happiest four years of her life.’ ” Dr. Bender describes Merion Mercy as a place where a young woman can find herself, become confident, desire to become more, and bring that understanding into the world.

He believes that the guiding principles of the Mercy values engender knowledge and understanding of others, particularly as students from different social and economic backgrounds combine in the circle of Mercy.
