REPORT ON GIVING

2023-2024

Dear Merion Mercy Community,

What an extraordinary year it has been for Merion Mercy Academy! As we celebrate our 140th anniversary, we are reminded of the rich legacy that has shaped our school into a beacon of excellence in education for young women. This milestone year is not only a time to reflect on our storied past, but also an opportunity to look forward.

In keeping with the vision of our 2022-2027 strategic plan, we have undertaken transformative initiatives that will ensure Merion Mercy continues to thrive for the next 140 years. Our capital projects are revolutionizing our campus, providing state-of-the-art facilities that foster learning and growth. The launch of our Diploma with Distinction program marks a significant step in offering personalized, rigorous academic experiences that prepare our students for the challenges of tomorrow. Our efforts to secure new scholarship funding have expanded access to a Merion Mercy education, and this year we will welcome the largest incoming class in recent history!

These accomplishments would not have been possible without your generous support. Your contributions help bridge the gap between tuition dollars and the true cost of a Merion Mercy education. More importantly, they empower us to transform the lives of exceptional young women who are poised to make a profound impact on the world. Your support is an investment in the future.

The 2023-2024 Annual Report is a testament to your dedication to Merion Mercy Academy. We deeply appreciate your partnership and commitment. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey.

With profound gratitude,

GIVING LEVELS

Founder’s Society

1884 FOUNDER’S SOCIETY

Members of this exclusive society sustain the philanthropic example provided by Sisters of Mercy foundress, Catherine McAuley, sharing a common vision and a commitment to providing an exceptional education to young women who live mercy and seek justice.

Merion Mercy expresses its deepest gratitude to these esteemed leadership donors who have chosen to prioritize supporting MMA through their philanthropic contributions. Your generosity and commitment play a vital role in the advancement of our institution’s mission and the empowerment of our students. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to Merion Mercy Academy and its continued excellence.

844 Gifts Made by 536 Donors

EITC AND OSTC DONORS

Merion Mercy is exceedingly grateful to the following individuals and businesses that made tax credit donations through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs. We also extend our thanks for our partnership with Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS) for streamlining this process for our donors.

This past fiscal year, 47 Pennsylvania businesses and individuals made generous gifts to MMA through these tax credit programs, amounting to $442,108 to support scholarships and financial aid. These donors were able to receive substantial tax credits while redirecting those tax dollars to provide needed funding for deserving Merion Mercy students. These tax credit gifts make a profound impact for students who would otherwise be unable to attend Merion Mercy Academy.

Nicole LaBletta ’94 fondly recalls how her mother’s encouragement and Merion Mercy Academy’s foreign language program drew her to the school. Her natural inclination towards language arts found a perfect home at Merion Mercy, where the academic environment, coupled with the supportive community, allowed her to step outside her comfort zone as a student coming from the city.

“Merion Mercy was warm and welcoming,” LaBletta reminisces, highlighting the deep and lasting friendships she forged during her time there— relationships that have endured to this day. Her passion for foreign languages, sparked at Merion, continues as a hobby even after majoring in Classics in college. She attributes much of her academic and personal growth to her teachers, particularly Sister Rita Small, who inspired her to pursue a Classics major, and English teachers Mrs. Hight, Mrs. Chapman, and Mrs. Ueland, who instilled in her the writing skills and love of literature that remain with her.

“Merion Mercy Academy was—and is—a place where lifelong friendships are made and academic pursuits are fostered,” LaBletta affirms. This deep connection to her alma mater is what motivates her to give back. “MMA was a life-changing experience," she explains. “I donate so that others may have the same opportunity.”

She adds: “We should never count the cost because what we give is returned to us in a greater magnitude. The spot we love so well has given us so much, it’s only right to give back.” LaBletta reminds her fellow alumnae that Merion Mercy can also use your talents as speakers or mentors and she encourages getting involved with the Alumnae Association. “In doing so, we continue to strengthen the bonds that unite us and ensure that future generations benefit from the same transformative experiences.”
