MMA Annual Report 2024-2025

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Dear Merion Mercy Community,

I am honored and excited to step into the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees at Merion Mercy Academy— a community that has meant so much to me and my family. Now in my fifth year on the Board, I am grateful for the opportunity to help guide a school that holds such personal meaning. As a past parent—my daughter Olivia graduated in 2021—I’m proud to give back to a place that helped shape her into the confident, compassionate young woman she is today.

With a background in corporate finance, I look forward to bringing that perspective to my role as Chair while building on the strong foundation laid by my predecessor, Ellen Byrnes Willcox ’80, P’12. I’m deeply grateful for her thoughtful leadership and lasting contributions. Her thoughtful guidance and enduring love for Merion Mercy have left a lasting impact, and I’m grateful she remains a valued voice on our Board.

The 2024-2025 school year was one of remarkable transformations. We opened two beautiful turf athletic fields, as well as the new Howley Center for Science and Innovation and the Howley Academic Center for Excellence. These state-of-the-art facilities reflect our bold vision for the future and our commitment to providing students with spaces that inspire learning, leadership, and community.

As we look ahead, I’m especially excited to help expand the one-of-a-kind service opportunities that set Merion Mercy apart and to continue supporting the incredible young women who call this school home. The experience here is unlike any other—there’s a spark, a spirit, a sense of belonging. Magic happens here.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you to our donors, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae, and the Sisters of Mercy. Your generosity, time, and commitment power this community and make our mission come alive every day. Your support is crucial in empowering the next generation of women leaders.

As you’ll see in this report, there are so many ways to support Merion, and every gift makes a difference. One particularly impactful and easy way is through Pennsylvania’s Tax Credit programs—whether as an individual or a business, you can redirect your state tax dollars to Merion Mercy. Just ask us how!

Thank you for being part of this community and for believing in the promise of Merion Mercy. I look forward to all that we will accomplish together.

Warmly,

Make Your Gift Today!

John and Megan Grady, P’19, ’20 BOT

1884 FOUNDER’S SOCIETY

Merion Mercy Academy’s 1884 Founder’s Society has been established to honor and recognize those who give $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund; making the success of Merion a top priority. Members of this exclusive society sustain the philanthropic example provided by Sisters of Mercy foundress, Catherine McAuley, sharing a common vision and a commitment to providing an exceptional education to young women who live mercy and seek justice.

Merion Mercy expresses its deepest gratitude to these esteemed leadership donors who have chosen to prioritize supporting MMA through their philanthropic contributions. Your generosity and commitment play a vital role in the advancement of our institution’s mission and the empowerment of our students. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to Merion Mercy Academy and its continued excellence.

ONE IN A MILLION A Gift of

Memory

As several of Lucia Miele’s daughters and granddaughters celebrated their reunions this year, they honored a woman whose love for Merion Mercy has shaped generations —Lucia Miele, P’72, ’75, ’85, GP’05, ’05, ’07, ’10.

In addition to their regular giving, the Miele family made a $2,000 gift in memory of their beloved matriarch—celebrating her enduring devotion to Merion Mercy and the values it instilled in her family.

A Giving Challenge

“I have participated in many matching gift fundraising efforts for my alma maters and professional organizations, and I have seen firsthand the good they can accomplish. My time on Merion Mercy’s Board has deepened my understanding of the many needs of our students. When my 50th Reunion approached, I saw an opportunity to help by proposing and providing a matching gift for the first time. I am deeply grateful for the enthusiastic response of my classmates. Together, we can create a transformational gift to support worthy students in need, and I know that it will be used where it is needed most so MMA students can thrive.”

Merion Mercy is grateful to the 65 individuals and businesses who contributed a total of $524,000 through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs in 2024–25.

These generous gifts provide critical scholarship and financial aid support—making it possible for deserving students to access a Merion Mercy education while allowing donors to receive significant tax credits by redirecting their state taxes for good.

“As a recipient of scholarships during my time at Merion, I am proud to give back through the EITC program. It’s a meaningful way to pay it forward— providing high-impact support to deserving students at a very low cost to donors. SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID FUNDS

Merion Mercy Academy is grateful for the scholarships that have been established and for the generous donors who supported our scholarship funds in the 2024–25 fiscal year. Thanks to this generosity, we are proud to offer a wide range of scholarship and financial aid opportunities—recognizing academic achievement, financial need, and talents in the arts, music, and STEM.

Endowed and Scholarship Funds at Merion Mercy Academy

Each year, Merion Mercy Academy depends on the generosity of our donors to fulfill our mission of educating students to become women of courage and compassion.

Unlike annual gifts, endowed fund contributions are invested to support MMA’s long-term financial stability. The principal remains intact, while the interest provides ongoing support for the donor’s chosen purpose. These lasting gifts have a powerful and enduring impact on our school.

We are also deeply grateful for the many scholarship and financial aid opportunities made possible through generous contributions to designated scholarship funds. These funds support students based on academic achievement, financial need, and interest in areas such as STEM, music, and service.

Endowing a Scholarship

“When asked to remember the impact of former Merion Mercy Academy English teacher Joan Hight, many alumnae respond that she was the best, most inspirational teacher they ever knew. She inspired hope, ignited imaginations, and most importantly, she instilled the ability to communicate. Joan worked in a lot of schools prior to coming to Merion Mercy, leaving a lasting impression in each one, but Merion provided her with the one thing she most needed—a community. Joan was seeking a home and that is what Merion was to her.

At Merion Mercy Academy, Joan found a community dedicated to empowering young women to grow with confidence and speak with their own unique voice. Merion’s mission to empower women as leaders, grounded in faith and spiritual growth, had a profound impact on Joan. She firmly believed that an allgirls education provided the ideal environment for young women to discover their individual strengths and emerge as confident, lifelong learners and community leaders. At Merion Mercy, students don’t just receive a strong academic foundation—they are also deeply supported in their personal and spiritual development. For Joan, the school was more than a workplace; it was a platform where she could share her gifts and help others discover theirs. Merion Mercy gave her a stage to shine—and more importantly, it gave her students the tools to become extraordinary.

Joan devoted over 30 years of her life to the girls of Merion and in our last conversations she was very clear that she wanted to do what she could to make a Merion education available to as many girls as possible. That is why I created this endowment. This was, quite literally, one of her last requests. Joan made this decision and I am only trying to make her wish come true.”
